APRIL ‘17 ISSUE #12

The glass issue is one of my favorites of the year, and it doesn’t disappoint. We have some incredible pieces hand-made by artists from Alaska, Washington and Oregon, with new styles, shapes and colors that we haven’t shown before. I really hope you like what we have to share! This being our 4/20 issue, I thought I would touch a little on the legend of the only holiday that self-identifying “stoners” have. What makes 4/20 so special? Was it really a police call sign for Cannabis possession? No. Was it because 4/20 is the best time of day to smoke pot? No, every time is a good time to enjoy. Is it because there are 420 good reasons to smoke pot, right now? Yes, and no! The truth is, we may not know what led to our holidaze and the number internationally recognized as being stoner friendly, but now that the urban legend portion can be laid to rest, I think it’s time we made it official. A federal holiday on 4/20? Maybe someday. What if there comes a time where April 20 is the day we remember all the people who went to prison for a plant? Our fathers and mothers and cousins and brothers and friends who were locked in a cage for possessing something that came from the earth. To my way of thinking, that would make 4/20 a truly special holiday. A day of remembrance, of celebration of our culture, and the simple fact that it survived prohibition and a chance to fight pain and fear with sweet clouds of smoke. And a few stoner jokes! This 4/20, I hope you get out and celebrate access to legal Cannabis, and the jobs, tax revenue and lives our plant changes, both as a medicine and a recreational drug that is safer than alcohol. If you think about it, we really do have a lot to be thankful for, and picking a day for that makes a lot of sense. Happy 4/20, and thank you for reading and sharing the Leaf! Please feel free to roll a joint on us this month.

—Wes Abney

marijuana transactions, due to the illogical status of Cannabis as a Schedule 1 substance in the United States, means the credit card and debit card transactions are impossible at most weed stores. But that’s changed now at three dispensaries in Maine, and the new business model may become widespread in the near future. Wellness Connection of Maine (WCM), the state’s largest medical Cannabis operator, now offers members the ability to pay for Cannabis without using cash. A new mobile app, CanPay, is reportedly the first of its kind of technology for the Cannabis industry. “We’re removing a major pain point for dispensary owners and patients, while providing transparency and convenience in the process,” Dustin Eide, CEO of CanPay, said. “Our partnership with WCM provides patients in Maine access to a secure payment option that is safer than cash.” Cannabis is legal for either medical or recreational uses (or both) in 29 states, though the plant remains illegal under federal law. Because of that, the banking industry at-large has not done business within the Cannabis industry, forcing cash-only transactions. This has created safety and security issues for Canna-businesses across the country because of large volumes of cash being kept on premise. “The creation of a new app within any other industry would be insignificant,” WCM CEO Patricia Rosi said. “However within the Cannabis industry, it’s a milestone because of the increased safety that it provides and the legitimacy that it signifies. CanPay uses a mobile app, linked directly to a customer’s checking account, to allow cashfree payments within the dispensary. For each purchase, the free app creates a single-use, nonidentifiable PIN to ensure privacy and security.”

Medical Marijuana Legalization Associated With Fewer Opioid Hospitalizations

Drug Policy Alliance Receives Award For Video Featuring Jay Z Calling Drug War An ‘Epic Fail’ The Drug Policy Alliance received the 2017 DoGooder Best Nonprofit Video for Good Award for its video slamming the War on Drugs, narrated by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and illustrated by acclaimed artist Molly Crabapple. The video first launched in The New York Times last September. The award was presented in March at the annual Nonprofit Technology Conference, hosted by the Nonprofit Technology Network in Washington, D.C. The 4-minute work is part history lesson and part vision statement. The video traces the Drug War and its impact on the Black community from President Nixon to the draconian Rockefeller Drug Laws to the emerging aboveground marijuana market that is poised to make legal millions for wealthy investors doing the same thing

that generations of people of color have been arrested and locked up for. “Jay Z and Molly Crabapple’s groundbreaking video has educated millions of people about the devastation wrought on the African American community because of the Drug War, and raises important questions about economic equity in the emerging aboveground marijuana industry,” said Asha Bandele, senior director for Grants, Partnerships and Special Projects at the Drug Policy Alliance. “We thank the DoGooder Awards for selecting our video as a finalist, our supporters who voted for us, and special thanks to Jay Z, Molly Crabapple and Dream Hampton for their contributions to this award-winning video.”

When medical marijuana is legalized for qualified patients, it is associated with a reduction in opioid-related hospitalizations, according to a new study published online. The study will appear in the scientific journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. A University of California at San Diego researcher looked at the association between medicinal Cannabis laws and hospitalizations related to opioid pain relievers, said Paul Armentano at the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The effect was apparent very quickly, and continued for years after passage of medical marijuana legalization. Both immediate and longer-term reductions in opioid-related hospitalizations followed changes in the law, the study reports. The study demonstrated significant reductions on opioid pain reliever (OPR) related hospitalizations associated with the implementation of medical marijuana polices, according to the report. The report “found reductions in OPRrelated hospitalizations immediately after the year of policy implementation as well

as delayed reductions in the third postpolicy year.” The oft-repeated claim that loosening marijuana laws result in an increase in Cannabis-related hospital admissions is also unfounded, according to the study. While the interpretation of the results should remain cautious, this study suggested that medical marijuana policies were not associated with marijuanarelated hospitalizations. Instead, the policies were unintendedly associated with substantial reductions in OPR-related hospitalizations, according to the report. Medical marijuana legalization was associated with 23 percent and 13 percent reductions in hospitalizations related to opioid dependence or abuse and OPR overdose, respectively; lagged effects were observed after policy implementation, according to the study. Medical marijuana polices had no associations with marijuana-related hospitalizations. The report confirms findings of previous studies that medical marijuana legalization is associated with lower rates of opioid abuse, fatal opioid overdoses and prescription drug spending.

Erika McConnell was appointed as Director of the Alaska Marijuana Control Office, filling the position temporarily held by Acting Director Sara Chambers, after the departure of Cynthia Franklin in January. McConnell spent 14 years with the Municipality of Anchorage where she oversaw special land use permits for alcohol. She is also credited with writing the city’s marijuana land use regulations. She began her duties on March 20. More licenses are being issued in the state, and businesses are opening their doors. Momo’s Bakery, a family-run, small batch, wholesale distributor of THC-infused edibles, is one the most recently licensed manufacturing businesses on board in Anchorage, supplying marijuana retail stores with sweet treats such as Cannachew Granola Bites and Butterscotch Brownies. “The demand has been overwhelming. We’re working hard at trying to fill orders,” Peter Eberhardt said, who, along with his wife Maureen, co-owns the bakery. Eberhardt said they delivered product to their first customer – Alaska Fireweed – on March 15. Until recently, the only edibles producer in operation in the state was Frozen Budz out of Fairbanks, that was also the first recipient of a state-issued marijuana business license last year. Also opened as of the end of March was the Wasilla-based marijuana retail store, Green Jar, another family-owned business. “Our first week went as well as I could hope,” Caleb Saunders said, co-founder of Green Jar along with Christopher Farris and Bailey Stuart. “During our soft opening, we had an amazing show of support from locals and the industry. It was good having a chance for us and our employees to test our systems out.” Saunders said that on opening day, there was a line out the door, with people parking at the store two hours before they officially opened. Shortly before opening, the business was able to get ahold of concentrate vape pens from Einstein Labs, and another store helped them obtain edibles from Frozen Budz so they could provide a mix of products for their opening. “It really was amazing,” Saunders said, “to have so many people in the industry and in the public showing support to help get us going!” CALL FOR SPEAKERS NEXT MONTH IN ANCHORAGE

GEORGE ZIMMER A VERY WELL-DRESSED CANNABIS ADVOCATE “You’re going to like the way you look, I guarantee it…” With that simple slogan, George Zimmer changed the way men shopped for suits and business attire in the United States. Through his Men’s Wearhouse company, Zimmer became one of the most recognizable businessmen in America during the go-go 90s and remained that way into the 2000s. Successful Cannabis advocates in the public eye often avoid admitting to consuming on a regular basis, instead opting for being ‘supporters’ of legalization. Zimmer, however, is the real deal – he admits to still consuming the plant at age 68. He credits Cannabis with weaning himself off of alcohol, saying that he hasn’t had a drink in more than 35 years. “The fact is, and I mean the scientific fact, [Cannabis] is less toxic and dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol, which are the main drugs in the United States,” Zimmer told Business Insider magazine earlier this year. “I’m just following a kind of lifetime passion of mine to help correct this myth,” Zimmer said, a Cannabis user since the 1970s. Ahead of his keynote speech at the Cannabis Collaborative Conference in Portland ZIMMER IS HELPING in February, Zimmer told bizJournals that “In TO MAINSTREAM A the emerging marijuana industry, we have FACT THAT MANY a chance to make a clear statement about OF US ALREADY ARE stakeholder capitalism. And by stakeholder AWARE OF: THERE’S capitalism, I mean that we move beyond NO SUCH THING AS A simply focusing on what’s good for the owners of the business, but also encompass em“LAZY STONER.” ployees, customers, communities, even vendors to the company. We have a chance to say that it’s not just the results, but how they’re obtained that matter. When I was at Men’s Wearhouse, I would not make decisions in which the only beneficiaries were the shareholders.” In 2013 he was unceremoniously fired as executive director of his own company by its board of directors, cited as a total breakdown in communication by the board and as a disagreement on business practice by Zimmer. When asked about whether Cannabis helped him through the process of being ousted from his own successful company, Zimmer said, “I refer to [marijuana] as harm reduction. So the way Cannabis helps is, when you lose your job, you don’t go on a two-week bender.” Not one to stay out of the game for long, Zimmer has now launched Generation Tux, a high-end tuxedo rental company. In addition to this, he’s also worked diligently toward mainstreaming Cannabis usage, speaking at conferences around the country. Since he doesn’t fit the stereotype of the average Cannabis user, Zimmer is helping to mainstream a fact that many of us already are aware of: there’s no such thing as a “lazy stoner.”

ENLIGHTEN ALASKA Q&A What got your family involved with the Cannabis plant? Jane I have a renewed interest in it, because six years ago my mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and we realized after watching her with chemo and to have radiation that she couldn’t eat. She was miserable, and we wanted to help alleviate her pain and knew that Cannabis was a possible treatment.

Were you able to use Cannabis for her? Jane We tried to get her to smoke a joint, and at age 83 she couldn’t smoke, and because edibles weren’t easy to find back then, we couldn’t do more. But that was the catalyst for me speaking about it, for our family talking about it. Leah went to business school at University of Alaska-Anchorage, and Evan went to California to learn how to grow Cannabis, and life moved on.

16/APr. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

The family business is led by mother Jane Stinson, a self-proclaimed hippy and oil industry retiree, along with her daughter Leah Levinton with a degree in business and a passion for Cannabis and her son Evan, a grower and industry specialist, — all working together to perfect their dispensary model of compassion.

Leah works alongside her brother, Evan

How did you end up owning a dispensary together? Jane Evan went down to California to learn how to grow pot on a bigger scale, and he spent three years learning indoor, outdoor and light dep growing and get an inside look at the industry. About that time, I was planning to retire after 20 years in the oil industry, and the three of us came together when we saw Proposition 2 coming up for a vote. The stars were starting to align, a biz degree, a hippie, a cultivator and a new future in the legal weed industry.

When did you know it could work? Leah Once Ballot Measure 2 passed, that was right when we decided this was what we’re going to do, we had a passion and a reason and a purpose to provide safe access to Cannabis to a larger market, and knew we had to do it.

What lead you to create Enlighten the way you did? Leah One of reasons we chose Enlighten as our name is we really wanted to believe in the wellness, and make sure that other people get specific good information about it, a foundation of education and enlightenment at our store. We train our budtenders extensively and they are very passionate and invested in our value system. We’ve gone into this more toward the wellness side, our tagline is “feel well, live well.” Eating right and exercising and potentially using Cannabis as part of your wellness program is a way to live well, and you will live an abundant and bright life.

How is your store different from others that you have seen?

‘‘

WE’RE LEANING TOWARD YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY CORNER STORE BOUTIQUE CANNABIS SHOP, AND WANT TO SUPPORT CRAFT CANNABIS.”

Leah What’s important to us is that our customers receive a really well-rounded experience from our store. For instance, in an ideal situation a customer walks in and has questions answered, feels confident and empowered to make a decision that will supplement their outlook on Cannabis. Our approach is to establish long term sustainable lasting relationships, with growers and consumers, that’s just our style as a family. A lot of our values that we have embedded within our family system, trust, honesty, being a good person, is translating into our business, which is what I think will set us apart from other dispensaries.

How did you choose the selection for the shop? Jane We know that there are stellar growers out there, Alaska is famous for having such good Cannabis here, and we are really paying attention to the smaller growers, and finding they have a lot of different strains, not mainstream strains. We’re leaning toward your favorite family corner store boutique Cannabis shop, and want to support craft Cannabis. Customers can count on amazing customer service, quality product, beautiful space and walking out with a big smile.

What are your goals now? Jane Workshops, educational forums — there’s a women’s event coming up; we want to be known as a place that people can come into, feel welcome, gather, and trust that they will receive accurate information and feel safe and open to ask as many questions as they would like to. We hope to expand in the future. Right now, we have our one retail space, but we intend to be fully vertically integrated with a garden and manufacturing in the future. For now we’re taking the appropriate steps for our family and our business with focusing on the retail and delivering the best possible experience for our customers.

Jane is paying attention to the smaller growers.

The indica-hybrid Buck Eye Purple, a cross of Gorilla Grape and GDP

Q&A

Co-Owner Ron Bass

We've been growing weed in this community for years. It's nothing new. But what I'm really focusing on is not just good bud or bad bud, but growing weed where I can say this weed will help you sleep, this will give you energy, this will kill your pain. It's a more holistic approach to the recreational market.

How did you get introduced to Cannabis? I didn't smoke weed my whole life, we're talking from a kid, as a teenager, I never smoked weed. I was a drinker for my recreation as an adult, I didn't touch the plant. I was a business guy. When I turned 28 my left eye started getting stuck all the way to the left, and I went to the doctor over and over, saying I couldn't see or walk because of it, and they kept sending me back home. Finally I got fed up and asked for a specialist, and they gave me an MRI and found more than 20 major lesions in my brain.

How many strains are you growing now, and what is your goal with the garden? There's 4,000 square feet and it has 75 lights and there’s more than 90 different strains growing right now. My favorite strains are my “one and done” for sure, the MTF, there's one called Pink, and Buckeye Purple, I love those because of their exotic color and the looks. I want to get real hot on the market HOUSTON, ALASKA on the full rec scale, so CalmNCollective.com I am growing more than 90 strains and releasing them statewide in April, and whatever the customers love the most, I am going to keep. Over time, we will downsize to 50, then 30 strains and we will have the most fire chronic, based on what the customers tell us. We are going to hit the market on 4/20, and I am ridiculously excited, trust me, I am excited to make history as the first garden in the borough to bring a product to market. The borough is the Humboldt County of Alaska, and I have a lot to live up to.

What happened next? What did you do?

CALM N COLLECTIVE

The doctor looks at me and said you have four months to live. I said, “Fuck you.” He said, “You’re going die soon, you can’t walk or see, this is MS symptoms, really bad.” I went home, laid in bed and looked at the ceiling and told myself it's decision time: to either give up and prepare to die, or fight like a psychopath to live. I chose to fight, and here I am today.

How did you fight the disease? So I started doing research into alternative medicines, looking for a cure, and the first thing the doctor tried to do was shove opiates down my throat. I've never been a drug addict, barely had smoked weed, and I said I wouldn't take them. Lot's of my friends and people around me smoke and grow weed, so I started growing eight years ago, after my research showed Cannabis helped with MS symptoms. I took a high CBD strain called Willie's Weed and crossed it with #3, an old school sativa, and I had a medical strain. I started growing, smoking it, eating it and it was making me feel better. The CBD took my inflammation down and the sativa effects gave me energy.

What is the most important factor for your garden, and your plans moving forward? Quality is huge to us. Quality outweighs making money in my book any day. I'm here for the people, not here just for me. We have the dispensary coming up soon, it will be open late spring in Houston. I'm already approved by the city and state, it will be called the Houston Grass Station. My goal is to get product to the people! I will sell to other dispensaries until I open, and then I will be able to sell my own product. I want to help people, I love people, I created this for me and it’s working and I want to show Alaska that we can help ourselves here, in a closet, or come to a dispensary and get medical strains, we can help you.

Has it helped your quality of life? After smoking, using butter and oils, I knew I was feeling better. A year ago I got an MRI and there were 1/4 of the lesions from before, and they were shrinking. I am curing this, I can walk and see and run a business, and there is still hope. If you get sick there is still hope, and I want people to know that. That's what happens when somebody’s life depends on it.

What made you want to grow Cannabis commercially and for recreational use? The biggest reason I wanted to do the commercial grow is because Alaska doesn't have a Medical Marijuana division. I saw the changes it made in my body, and with me, and I want to show the world what I'm capable of, and the plant. I want to save lives. My life depends on growing weed. And a lot of others do too.

Is there a message you want people to take away from your battle and experience?

I AM CURING THIS, I CAN WALK AND SEE AND RUN A BUSINESS, AND THERE IS STILL HOPE.

There's hope. Period. Let's go with that. My message is hope, that people who are sick, have pain, go to work everyday, that there is hope, besides turning to opiates or saying ‘I don't have to die, I can break through this and live.’ You can turn to weed instead of withdrawing, you can get rid of pain and keep your quality of life. MS comes and goes, so I never know when I’ll feel sick or feel better, but I keep my head up and keep pushing and know that tomorrow will always be there. I get sick still, but I can see now, I can walk now, I'm 1,000 times better, but I still have symptoms. I didn't cure it 100 percent, but I made it to where I can withstand the pain and live my life and be happy.

alking up the wood ramp into the store, it's hard to imagine the wonders of glass and culture that wait behind the doors of this friendly business. With an American made selection and great customer service, it's easy to see why Dab Lab has quickly become the most celebrated glass shop in town. Stepping into the shop reveals a comfortable layout, with every possible square inch stuffed with beautiful glass art. What we really like about Dab Lab is that both the inventory and management reflect the Cannabis lifestyle and industry in a positive and professional way. Whether in the big city on the West Coast or in a small Alaska town, glass shops often have cheap Taiwan glass and high margin knockoff products. Not here! From quality bangers and nails to the tools needed for any form of Cannabis consumption, the selection is clearly by stoners, for stoners, and we love it. The shop is clean and laid out well, with the focus being on the heady pieces jumping out from every corner. As much an art gallery as a store, this is a great place to stop in simply for the headies. They also carry CBD products and a full line of every rolling paper or smoking accessory possible, making this truly a one-stop shop. We liked seeing the CBD products, especially considering the limited supply of Cannabis products still hitting recreational pot shops. There's also clothes, protective Pelican cases, Dime Bags, and more that you really need to see to believe. So no matter if you’re looking for a first-timer pipe or that sweet new dab rig, Dab Lab has you covered with a solid selection and a friendly attitude to help you find a piece that’s perfect for your needs.

ALASKA Leaf

STRAIN OF THE MONTH Review by ALASKA LEAF | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN/ALASKA LEAF

A

local cross of Blueberry and an unknown AK strain, the Blue Beast is a unique and local strain that blends beauty and a loud smell and flavor, grown by a private citizen. The purple-hued buds are solid and thick, with a tight trim job and a frosty coating of delicious trichomes. Opening a jar of the flower releases a heady loud smell of blueberry muffins, with a sharp and tangy lemon background and light earthy hint that lingers behind the brighter blueberry notes. This strain smells good enough to eat, but smoking it is the best way to enjoy the Blue Beast. Each bud feels impossibly thick, with a firm density and a more oily than sticky feeling of trichomes and terpenes rubbing off on fingertips. The cure is well balanced. Breaking off a piece of a bud is like pulling solid cotton candy, and reveals a deeper earthy and fuely skunk flavor that spreads from the stem. Ripping a bowl through a water pipe reveals a truly mellow smoke, one that enters and exits and leaves the mind wondering, “Did I just take a toke?” Effects follow quickly, along with a tingly Blueberry taste that pops on the palate after exhale, and the answer is quickly revealed. The hazy high sends the mind spinning sideways into euphoria and full-on time-warp. The mind slows down to a speed that can only be described as superbly stoned. This is the perfect strain to smoke before a movie, or for a relaxing evening, and has enough sativaesque carrying power to rise through the heady indica effects for a fun and relaxing high..

My friend Freddi’s birthday is on 4/20. Lucky woman. Mary and I are creating an infused appetizer and dessert buffet to celebrate! The plan is to have ten starters and eight sweets, all gently infused with either Canna-butter or Cannaoil. We’re featuring three of them here. Potency of each dish should be listed tableside, so you can maintain your dignity. I almost always do.

These are a few of my favorite “go-to” starters from my book “Cooking with Cannabis” by Quarto Press.

Smoked Salmon & Cucumber w/ Cream Cheese A refreshing snack that is perfect for company or just one. You can mix the salmon into the cream cheese, but I prefer to place a little slice on top, with a squeeze of lemon and sometimes capers.

1. Slice cucumber & place on work surface. 2. In a small bowl combine cream cheese and the Canna-butter.

3. Spread cream cheese mixture on each of the cucumber slices.

4. Sprinkle with the scallions. 5. Top with pieces of salmon and

a squeeze of fresh lemon, if so desired.

INGREDIENTS 1 small cucumber, scrubbed clean with the ends removed 4 tablespoons cream cheese 2 teaspoons Canna-butter 2 scallions, thinly sliced 4 ounces smoked salmon 1/2 lemon, optional

HOW PRESSURE IMPACTS GARDENS Plants rely on pressure differentiation to pull up nutrients through the roots, transport minerals, maintain turgor pressure and a variety of other functions. Plants also have stomata: tiny pores, predominantly on the leaf surface that the plant can open or close, allowing for transpiration (the release of internal water vapor through the stomata into the surrounding environment). The stomata is also the mechanism through which the plant intakes Carbon Dioxide. The relative humidity in your room is additionally a measure of the amount of pressure being exerted on your plants. If you think of your plants as maintaining 100 percent relative humidity inside the leaf surface, the plant will monitor and adjust the amount of water vapor it releases through transpiration based largely on the relative humidity outside that leaf surface. If the relative humidity or RH, outside the leaf surface is very high, there is literally more pressure pushing back onto the stomata, which limits the amount of transpiration the plant is required to perform and thus allows the stomata to open fully and stay open. Conversely, if the RH outside the leaf surface is very low, the air will “suck” more water vapor from the plant through the stomata and the plant will lose more water to transpiration. Plants will close or shrink their stomatal ideal VPD range can be supported without bringing opening in response to higher transpiration rates as a the RH to such dangerous levels. When following the VPD chart and minimizing the variance between daytime and evening temperatures, microbial tea is applied in an environment considerably closer to — if not inside — the ideal range for the microbes in the tea to live for extended periods of time on the leaf surface and work their magic. As the Cannabis plant reaches more and more cultivators hands imparting the knowledge and lessons she has to share, we as farmers will continue to evolve our techniques and understanding of creating an ideal environment to maximize genetic potential and minimize risk. Early training and pruning is a must if getting any sort of substantial yield is a priority. 45-50 days of veg build a nice wide base that will hold the weight and account for the vicious stretch they are capable of.
