420-friendly treehouses

& other summertime ideas This month’s magazine is a really fun issue and

shares some beautiful gardens and products along with a look into a whole new form of pot tourism. I had the pleasure of spending a night last month getting high in a tree at Mountain Views B&B in Monroe, Washington, and it was truly a great experience. From two treehouses to tiny houses and a geodesic dome for those really looking to blast off, the B&B is an incredible place to stay. It represents what I hope is a new trend in the travel industry. I also had the chance to walk through Danish Gardens this month in Anchorage, a beautiful deep water culture production facility that is producing some amazing plants. It’s an impressive grow and the plants are magnificent, up to nine feet tall and oozing with THC and terpenes. Look for their products to hit dispensaries later this month. Hiking Flattop Mountain after a great THC Fair This month’s issue also features a great set of reviews with a new pre-roll product and a fire strain and concentrate of the month. We also have a new Growtech and Behind the Strain, a new budtender and patient profile, and so much more for you to read! As always, thanks for reading and sharing the Leaf, and I hope you enjoy this issue we worked so hard to bring to you.

NEW STUDY: Smoking Marijuana Improves Cognitive Performance

NEW YORK POLICE Continue making Discriminatory Cannabis Arrests

Marijuana doesn’t impair, and in many cases, actually improves executive functioning, an area of cognitive performance, according to a new study led by Harvard Medical School affiliate McLean Hospital. The study, “Splendor in the Grass? A Pilot Study Assessing the Impact of Medical Marijuana on Executive Function,” led by Staci Gruber, Ph.D., also explored whether patients experienced improved cognitive functioning, reports Cynthia Than at Inc. “After three months of medical marijuana treatment, patients actually performed better, in terms of their ability to perform certain cognitive tasks, specifically those mediated by the frontal cortex,” Dr. Gruber said. Previous studies have already shown that anxiety often lessens both attention

A new report by the Marijuana Arrest Research Project, commissioned by the Drug Policy Alliance, shows that marijuana possession arrests under Mayor Bill de Blasio continue to be marked by extremely high racial disparities, as was the case under the Bloomberg and Giuliani administrations. The report entitled “Unjust and Unconstitutional: 60,000 Jim Crow Marijuana Arrests in Mayor de Blasio’s New York,” shows that despite a change in mayoral administrations and police commissioners, the NYPD continues to make large numbers of unjust and MOST PEOPLE ARRESTED ARE racially-targeted marijuana arrests. “President Obama, Governor Cuomo, former YOUNG BLACKS AND LATINOS Mayor Ed Koch and candidate Bill de Blasio all – EVEN THOUGH STUDIES strongly criticized the NYPD’s racist marijuana CONSISTENTLY SHOW YOUNG possession arrests,” said Queens College professor Harry Levin, who wrote the report. and executive function, so if Cannabis products relieve anxiety, it makes sense that a patient’s cognitive function improves. Chronic pain also impairs cognitive performance, especially in tasks requiring executive function, so a reduction in pain level likely increases concentration and cognitive performance. “Symptom improvement may therefore result in improved cognitive performance,” the authors wrote. “Interestingly, two previous studies have noted a positive association between a history of marijuana use and improved cognitive performance on measures of psychomotor speed, working memory, executive functioning and verbal learning in patients with bipolar disorder compared to patients without a history of marijuana use.”

Washington Driver was 54 Times the Legal THC Limit Results from a blood test on a driver arrested in May by the Washington State Patrol (WSP) showed he had 54 times the legal limit for marijuana’s most active ingredient in his bloodstream, according to authorities. That’s the highest level recorded in Washington state in at least eight years, reports KOMO News. A trooper started looking for the driver, a 53-year-old man from Lynnwood, after witnesses called to report a hit-and-run crash near the King-Snohomish County line, according to Trooper Heather Axtman.

8/AUG. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Witnesses continued to follow the driver until a state trooper and a Lynnwood police officer pulled him over. In July, the WSP’s toxicology lab tested the driver’s blood and found the THC level to be 270 nanograms, which is 54 times the legal limit of five nanograms for driving. That limit, it should be noted, is set absurdly low, and has no correlation with impairment, according to science. Axtman said the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office is currently deciding what charges to file against the man.

The Alaska Marijuana Control Board (AMCB) finally moved the on-site consumption issue forward for legal marijuana businesses in Alaska. At the July 2017 meeting in Fairbanks, the Board approved a proposal to set up rules for on-site marijuana consumption at retail stores. The vote passed 3-2. Smoking — and what to do with that smoke — were the main areas of concern, and the proposal going out for public comment includes a draft of specific rules that include ventilation provisions as well as the location of the proposed consumption space. Alaskans have 60 days to comment on the proposal before the board revisits the proposal. The Anchorage Assembly formally asked the state to pass laws that would allow tourists and locals to partake in retail shops. They pointed out the disconnect between people being able to buy a commercially available product, but only be allowed to consume it in a private home. Assemblyman Christopher Constant led this resolution. T H E D O W N T O W N D E B AT E

In June, the Anchorage Assembly spent several hours debating whether or not to allow more marijuana shops to open up in Downtown Anchorage. Several dozen individuals provided testimony to the Assembly on both sides of the debate. Despite a request from some downtown business owners to place a moratorium on more Cannabis businesses to open up in the neighborhood, the Assembly unanimously approved a marijuana license and special land use permit for Great Northern Cannabis Inc. FAC E B O O K C U T S O F F AC C E S S TO B U S I N E S S PAG E S

Coinciding with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s first time visit to Alaska, Facebook unceremoniously shut down more than half a dozen Facebook pages for marijuana shops licensed to do business in Alaska. While Facebook typically provides information about page violations to Facebook the Terms of Service, in this case, they did not unceremoniously provide clear evidence of posts that prompted shut down the closures and did not give businesses guidmore than half a ance on how they could come into compliance. Businesses affected included Dankorage, dozen pages for Alaska Buds, Alaska Fireweed, Cannabasmarijuana shops ka, Arctic Herbery, Enlighten Alaska, Pakalolo licensed to Supply Co. and Red Run Company. The initial do business removal of Facebook pages was isolated to in Alaska. Anchorage-based businesses. This led some to speculate it could have been a concerted effort by individuals who were unhappy with the presence of the shops in certain areas of town. The removal later extended to some Fairbanks and Kenai Peninsula-based businesses. Facebook also put a three-day block on admins responsible for posting to the pages, preventing them from liking anything, commenting or posting on Facebook from their personal accounts. Facebook does not allow individuals to “purchase, sell, or trade” marijuana on Facebook, however, an individual acting as an admin representing a company that is acting in a legal manner based on state law seems to be a gray area. AMCB members recently considered rules for advertising marijuana products. Most marijuana businesses in Alaska have voluntarily posted the five statements that are mandated by the state to appear on all marijuana product packaging to each post on Facebook and other social networks. Even though these warnings were prominently placed on most of the Facebook pages that were removed, including on individual posts, no further consideration was given by Facebook to reinstate the pages.

“IT’S AMAZING TO HAVE GOTTEN SO FAR AFTER SO LONG AND SUCH A TOUGH PROCESS” Owner Dane Wyrick

DANISH GARDENS 14/AUG. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

A

year and a half after receiving the very first approved cultivation license in Anchorage, Danish Gardens has finally harvested their first of many crops to come.

Housed inside a 20,000-square-foot building, the vertically integrated location will one day house a garden, processor and retail location, and a proposed consumption deck. In the present it is cranking out nearly 70 pounds of high grade flower every day in a state of the art facility. The brainchild of Dane Wyrick, a self-made Alaska contractor and owner of a local deck and building company. With a background in engineering and also as a professional musician, building the garden has been part dream and part retirement plan mixed into one. “It's amazing to have gotten so far after so long and such a tough process,” Wyrick explained. “The first time the cops came in when I had plants I asked them am I going to jail? That was my biggest awakening was that moment, when they laughed and said ‘Nope.” Despite being the first licensed and approved company in Anchorage, Danish Gardens has faced intense slowdowns and delays that pushed the company's first harvest date almost a year from initial projections. “We put a tot of time, energy and resources into the facility. It took three years to design and $1.5 million to do this,” he said seriously. “This is Alaskan made money from my company, my brother’s and my investment.” Despite frustrations with the Anchorage building department, the pride and happiness at getting to grow is clear as he shows people around the garden. Wyrick designed the facility to be highly efficient, and it’s evident in every step. The garden runs on a deep water culture system uses no soil in the flowering process, instead plants are kept in a bucket filled with water and nutrients, with the roots hanging down in the water in a free floating state. All of the water used in the process is treated before use, and is recovered and retreated after cycling through the plants, with 60% of each use reusable while the rest is disposed cleaner than when it came in from the municipal source. Not only is the deep water culture system efficient, it also is directly controlled by an injection system for nutrients, and remotely monitored PH. The automation helps the 12 full time staffers spend less time messing with plants and more time focusing on the environment and other aspects of running a massive garden operation. “We don't have a lot of maintenance. Once they are in here they're controlled,” he explained. “We aim for 250 pounds in one of three rooms every 20 days once our power and canopy are at full capacity. In this room I can do nine-foot plants at a pound plus per plant, so less is more-- less labor, less equipment, less costs in nutrients and no soil, we don't have to mess with the plant a whole lot.” While it may sound simple coming from his engineering and growing background, the system is as complex as it is refined. The entire goal of Danish Gardens is to bring high quality weed to market that stays as consistent as it does top shelf. “To us the branding and the hype is important but what is more important is that we put out consistent good pot and that our business practices are fair,” he said passionately. “I'm too old for vanity, I'm here to grow and retire and push the industry up. With us the consistency is our biggest factor. Consistency is everything.” With only the first of three grow rooms up and running, the garden has a lot of room to grow, pun intended. Eventually Dane intends to roll out a full line of processing for oils, with 80% of future crops expected to be run into oil for dabbing, pens or edibles. Plans for tasty treats include a line of Alaskan meat jerky’s, sparkling water and nut mixes, all infused with high grade pot. For now he and the team are simply happy to be growing, and dialing in the system that will soon be one of the largest production facilities in the state. “Everything we do we want to be top notch. We want our reputation to be just what the Assembly has told us, that we are the model AK Cannabis business. We’re doing everything we can to uphold that reputation, this is a long term goal for us, my retirement business, and our plants are our pathway to that. This is the art of grow science. Figure out what the plants want and give it to them best and they will give it back to you.”

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? It was about five years ago when I became sick and so I had to leave my nursing career as a CNA. I met my boyfriend and he was into Cannabis big-time and I started asking questions and consuming. It helped relieve my symptoms and I was able to redo my diet and change my lifestyle and it was beneficial for everything in my life. Later on I realized I could help people with Cannabis too. That’s what I want to do with my life. It’s what attracted me to nursing and I realized I could do it in the Cannabis world and combine passions. I wasn’t always positive about Cannabis use. I wasn’t educated but I’ve learned and it’s amazing and I want to push how much I can help people. It takes all of us to educate others and to get it out there and keep fighting.

Each month, the Alaska Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Alaska Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

OLIVIA WILLIS

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONSUME? I am a big concentrate lady. I smoke a lot of rosin! My boyfriend and I make it from our own garden, we use the entire plant and don’t let it go to waste. I’m fortunate to get to mess around in my own garden and grow from seed and give them a squish and see how they taste.

FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS, EFFECTS AND TERPENE PROFILES, PERSONALLY? Orange Flare by Greenlife Supply. It’s originally called Bowser. He gave the seed packs to my boyfriend and we picked that phenotype for him. He started cultivating it after he opened up and then

16/AUG. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

he started selling it and itfeels really cool to help bring something from start to finish. My other personal favorite is Honey Banana by Bob’s Morning Bear out of Kasilof, he likes to run high THC genetics, and I am loving his strain. The Honey Banana has a nice mild taste but is still uppity. I also love Tanana Herb Co. from Fairbanks; their Cookies and Cream is amazing. They’re an awesome cultivator — the consistency of the harvest is amazing. I really wish I could bug them for a clone of the God’s Gift!

HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT CANNABIS FOR SOMEONE? I like to ask a lot of questions. I feel like you can never ask enough. There are different variables, and it is trial and error, so communication is a very big thing. I love to make people feel comfortable, especially if they are new to it. I don’t try to go in as a know-it-all. I just want to make them comfortable and feel equal — and we are equal — it’s a big learning process together, I’m just the one who signed up to be behind the counter.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? I’ve only been a budtender for two months but my favorite part is interacting and chatting with consumers, from a firsttime user to a long-time smoker. Getting a new strain for them to try is awesome and their feedback is amazing. I have five years of growing and consuming experience, which really isn’t that long in the industry when there are people 20 or 40 years in. But I know that I know nothing and want to keep learning — that’s what I love about Cannabis — there’s so much to learn. Later in my life I want to make terpene and Cannabinoid profiles for people who have specific reasons to use Cannabis. I am hoping one day we can get there and I can help a lot more people.

I LOVE TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE NEW. I DON’T TRY TO GO IN AS A KNOW-IT-ALL.”

WHY DO YOU LIKE WORKING AT ENLIGHTEN?

It’s a family-run business. The way they treat workers is so personable. We’re individuals and matter to them as part of a team and it’s an honest, open environment. We’re all there with the same goal to help people and get the best Cannabis to people.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

budtender of the month Olivia is a passionate grower and squisher of rosin, mixed martial arts fighter and a patient advocate with a background in nursing and a dream to help connect people to the best Cannabis possible to fit their lifestyle and personal needs.

Right now my number one hobby is helping in the garden at home, but I like to get outside. We have six dogs. I’ve trained in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). MMA helps shape you up, getting your butt kicked every day. Don’t walk in going you’re the tough guy. It helps to shape your mind and set goals and sweat it out. I’m a girl and have worked out with guys. Get over the fear. It opens your eyes and teaches self defense, which everyone should know. Right now, I am not training for a fight, but I do it for fun. I enjoy the challenge. It’s a clean start and a fresh slate. I don’t have to think about anything else except how I feel and the way I move. The challenge is addicting and I love the way it made me think. I am so for MMA and pot and for Cannabis [being accessible] for all athletes. Cannabis is something we shouldn’t be afraid to really talk about. It helps the body so much whether for pain or muscles tightening or anxiety. I’ve come across many people who smoke enlighten alaska and work out and it doesn’t change them. I think it’s a 2600 Spenard Rd. Anchorage great thing, honestly.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

Frances mcdormand Although not yet a household name, Frances McDormand remains one of America’s most accomplished actresses. She is among the few American performers to have achieved the “Triple Crown of Acting” winning an Oscar, Tony and Emmy award through her career. The wife of director and writer Joel Coen, of the famous Coen brothers, McDormand has appeared in many of her husband’s films, including Raising Arizona, Fargo and more recently Hail, Caesar! She’s been a fixture on Broadway since the ‘80s. At times, McDormand has been vocal about her use of Cannabis. In 2003, she appeared on the cover of High Times magazine holding a joint and wearing a Cannabis leaf T-shirt. In the interview, she talks about her personal life, acting career and her thoughts on Cannabis. “I’m a recreational pot-smoker,” she told the magazine. “Because it’s not a constant in my life, I don’t say it should be made legal so it’s more available. But from a medical point of view — I have friends who need to use it — why should they have to look too hard for the thing that makes them better? So from that point of view, it’s like, ‘Please, what is the problem?” Of course, this was 2003, long before there was any real notion that Cannabis would ever be legalized in our lifetimes in the United States. In the interview she notes that she started smoking Cannabis in college, at Bethany College in West Virginia in the late 1970s. “The problem with pot, McDormand said, was that “there has never been enough of a distinction between marijuana and other drugs. In the classic, weird hygiene movies from high school everything led to depravity—marijuana, sex, coffee! There was no distinction made between the effects of one thing. So it’s always been lumped in with drugs in general.” While these statements may seem a bit tame by today’s Cannabis activist standards – one should remember that just for an actress of her prestige that coming out in a magazine like High Times during the Bush era was a very radical stance. It wasn’t until 2014, just after Colorado and Washington had legalized recreational Cannabis, that McDormand spoke again about the subject. She seemed to have changed her stance on legalization. In an interview with the Daily Beast, she revealed an affinity for LSD. “It was always recreational, and it never became a part of my daily existence,” she said. “But I really, really enjoyed LSD. And I really enjoyed mushrooms very much. It’s unfortunate, I think, that drugs were not handled properly. Politically, they’ve been used to separate the economic classes. ore than 1,000 attendees flocked to the

Anchorage Sheraton hotel last month to experience the second annual THC Fair and get a glimpse into the hidden world of weed culture. A celebration of everything Cannabis, the Fair had dozens of vendors covering every aspect of the up and coming industry. New and veteran recreational Cannabis companies made up a bulk of the show, with dispensaries, producers and processors showing off and talking about their products. There was a great selection of glass and smoking products, cool clothes and accessories, raffles for plants and pipes and hard to find options such as genetics from the powerhouse Seeds Here Now. The event was a major success, and helped reaffirm why the show is pushing its geographic boundaries into Alaska. “It was a really good show. The vendors we had here were really fantastic,” said THC Director Naomi Forkash. “Most fun for me is meeting the locals, and seeing people come in and be excited to talk about CBD in an open way, and learn about the new ways to grow and consume it and the legalities. Next year we are definitely going to come back to Anchorage earlier in the year, and we are really excited to come back next year!”

nother big seller at the show this year was CBD products, ranging from cartridges to topicals and all sorts of edible treats. We saw the Releaf Alaska booth slammed for most the weekend, helping people get authorized as patients on site with a doctor, and offering a variety of CBD options for people to purchase. Other booths chose to focus on handing out information and networking, which was easy to do in a ballroom that hummed with conversation for the whole weekend. For guests coming in and out, the chance to see something new was a big draw. “I flew in from Florida and really wanted to see a dispensary, and when I saw a flyer for this I had to come by,” said Tyler B., a 23-year-old tourist on a family trip. “It’s really exciting to see and learn about legal pot. We need it at home, but we are still waiting on counties and politics for medical to get started.” For local attendees, the chance to meet a grower or connect with a dispensary where they get their products from was a big hit. Several booths had smelling jars set up, so consumers could sniff and look at the beautiful Cannabis available at a nearby dispensary. With a positive vibe and a friendly environment, the THC Fair showed Alaska is hungry for pot, and the budding industry behind it.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS B&B

Cannabis-friendly getaway offers unforgettable Northwest experience

N

estled in the rolling green foothills of Monroe, WA in full view of the glorious Cascade mountain range, is a one-of-a-kind Bed and Breakfast that’s changing how pot and tourism intersect. Named for the beautiful property, Mountain Views B&B is the brainchild of Tracy Rice, who has operated her B&B on the property since January 2014. She has slowly added to her eclectic collection of tiny houses, wagons and tepees, and has crowned the property with two beautiful treehouses this summer. “Two months ago I had no treehouses and today I have two! It happened so quick,” Tracy said, laughing. “It’s been quite the experience, and as soon as I had the one up I knew I wanted to do another.” Already planning a third and possible fourth, the treehouses offer visitors a unique twist on the typical bed and breakfast experience. Not only is smoking allowed, it’s encouraged, down to complimentary rolling papers and pipes available for consumption. “Who wouldn’t want to get high in a treehouse?” Tracy asked, laughing. “It’s all about the experience. I keep a dab rig in one and a bong in the other to smoke in myself when I don’t have guests.” The Hashtag Treehouse is a modern design that lights up like a beacon in the night, with striking looks and a high vantage perspective from more than 20 feet in the air. The inside feels spacious and comfortable, with LED lighting and a table setup below with a loft bed for sleeping. Easily sleeping two, the room feels at home in the trees, right down to the reclaimed wood railings and the pot leaf themed bedding. If the Hashtag house is a modern blend of tree and house, the Potleaf Treehouse is where hippy art meets living wood in a sensational design of colors and light. << Designed by SunRay Kelley, a local treehouse designer and builder of living art projects, the cedar for the loft and railings came from Tracy’s trees. The cedar panels on the inside and the roof came from SunRay’s property. Outside is the living plant wraparound deck.

alking around the outside of this treehouse feels like a dream, with plants happily growing in the sunbeams that drift through the trees. Opening the custom cut door reveals a beautiful five wall design, with hand molding and painted walls of beautiful shimmering pastel colors, with a peaked roof of glass that lets light enter, and custom cut windows facing out into the forest. If it sounds like living in a dream, it really is. Guests also have the option of renting one of two tiny houses, or a full suite in the main house, which includes access to a hot tub and other amenities. Whether inside or outside, guests are likely to meet Veggie Might, Tracy’s pet pig, who often wears tutus and is fully house trained. She also has an African Grey Parrot named Juma Sultan, who likes to question people “Where’s my Marijuana?” The property and vibe reflects the personality behind the B&B, where Tracy is a superhost with an easy laugh and an engaging personality that immediately puts guests at ease. Her goal is to continue to expand the property, and to let people know that it is just a short drive out of the city.

“I’m definitely doing the third I LOVE HAVING treehouse. I want to expand into GUESTS COME AND GETTING other recreational states with TO SHARE this model. Or sell everything THEIR and move to Costa Rica. EXPERIENCES It’s between the two,” she joked. AND CRAZY “But really, I love having STORIES, guests come and getting to share I NEVER KNOW their experiences and crazy stoWHO IS COMING TO STAY NEXT.” ries, I never know who is coming Owner Tracy Rice to stay next and I love it.” On a given day, guests from all over the country and world stop by Mountain Views B&B to smell the clean air, try out a new experience and even get hassled by a parrot for pot. It’s safe to say there isn’t another place like it, and it’s the perfect summer escape for any 420 friendly traveler. And with the perfect hostess to provide the stay, guests from Seattle or beyond can feel good about a treehouse vacation. “People come out and still whisper weed and marijuana like it’s completely illegal, and I have to remind them they can scream it and run through the fields while smoking,” Tracy said with excitement. “They don’t need to hide anymore.”

24/AUG. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

When did you first start using Cannabis, and what was it like?

I grew up as a pothead. I first smoked at age 9. It was Durban Poison we stole from my dad and that’s all I remember. What it really was that got me into it was a Look magazine cover Oct. 30, 1969 and on the cover, they had a picture of a guy smoking a roach, a close up beautiful shot of the sky and the smoky beautiful roach and it was dreamy and fucking cool as shit. That’s when I knew I needed to smoke pot.

Did you know right away that it helped you? Did you keep smoking? You can circle back around. It can be said that for anybody who does smoke it is truly a medicinal thing, we’ve been self-medicating forever. I was a morose and aloof artist kid who sat in the back of a room and drew pictures of the teacher. and I’ve smoked copious amounts of MJ since I started, and I can only imagine what ailments that MJ has prevented from happening up until now.

When did you first become a mmj patient?

In ‘96 I was living in L.A. and that’s when they kicked in MJ down there, got my card the first week. That was based on a broken back injury, I carried that card from ‘96 until 2006. I’m in the game, it’s rec, it’s pain management, it’s making life a little more palatable, it’s social, it’s become without a doubt a part of my everyday life. Now I’m a full-time marijuana guy in the industry There’s and my personal life. Holy crap, talk about a change of perspective

When did you know something was wrong?

Two years ago I noticed a bump on my neck up under my jaw and that bump turned into a lump and pretty soon that became something altogether different and the size of an avocado pit lodged under my jaw. No symptoms, pain, or sensations, just a lump that I named Julia.

Did you immediately suspect Cancer?

Is it worth registering as a medical cannabis patient?

I can’t get oil legally and affordably, so fuck the law. Even deeply in the industry I can’t meet my needs. I’m not willing to sign my rights away and be registered for a 10 percent discount — it’s ridiculous.

How do you feel today after implementing your healthcare? Here’s the thing—the existential anguish is as deep as it can be. I’m as healthy as a tree, completely looking and feeling great, people look at me and go “What, you have cancer?” and it’s hard to believe. Just good living, smoking shit tons of pot, and doing 500mg a day of the 3:1 tincture and all the oil I can get my hands on. Throughout this year, I haven’t felt anything at all, no symptoms just this lump

Have the doctors noticed a difference?

We’ve taken surgery off the plate and compared to others with similar cancers I’m doing fantastic. I hate to put it mildly but it’s literally all I’ve done: consume as much CBD and oil as I can afford and source. Exercise and no sugar but I still smoke like crazy and I haven’t been doing that much. Really it’s because I’ve been so overwhelmed.

a billion reasons why Cannabis is illegal, and I’m not a conspiracy guy, but that’s what a great conspiracy is all about.

Although I knew there was something seriously wrong during that time, before I actually got diagnosed I started using oil heavily — rounds of RSO in the beginning of 2016. The lump was just there and benign, and after the diagnosis came in and they gave me a prognosis of surgery, radiation and chemo. The proposed surgery was to literally cut my head in half, remove a bunch of stuff and winch it back together, and I said I’ll call you later and hit the trail looking for Cannabis to use.

How has your perspective changed since your cancer diagnosis?

Here I am in the Cannabis capital of the nation, and medical Cannabis used to be legal, my diagnosis came right after medical marijuana got squashed, and I’m sitting going “What the fucking fuck,” here I am looking for medicine and Cannabis that three months ago I had full access to… and now I’m treating myself and suddenly I go “Woah, I can’t get it anymore,” I have to go underground, because a gram of RSO at a store is $50 to $60, and suddenly I saw it from a patient’s point of view — my God, I’ve been treating myself with this and its been great, now the doctors want to cut my head off and I’m still doing well, why can’t I keep doing well.

has The change that ended medical marijuana in Washington made it harder for you as a patient? How are you able to get your meds and what are you doing for treatment?

I get my oil from the underground, and I’m really relying on this underground Cannabis railway that is helping patients do their thing. I take as much as I possibly can, I drop tincture right on the tumor, and since there’s enough lipids and enzymes in the throat and mucus; the theory is that it’s breaking the blood brain barrier right away. I’ve been treating for nine months and cut sugar out of my diet and I could see from scans and reading that the metabolism of a tumor is like ten times that of a normal body, so it thrives on calories. I dropped 40 pounds, been doing all the oil, and my tumor has shrunk down to the size of a walnut.

How do your doctors view your use of Cannabis treatments?

I make sure they know I’m treating this with Cannabis, and I want them to remember when they are asked. They can remember my case and watch me, let’s do this! I get a lot of raised eyebrows, and reactions were literally crickets, and when I did hear something it was a mumble of “There’s no science,” and the other mumble was “Makes people get the munchies,” and that’s the only two positive statements I have heard from a dozen doctors. That’s it. Everyone else simply lowers their eyes, goes back to paperwork and shakes their heads and says “Good for you.”

you feel like they’re ignoring the cure?

I don’t feel angry, I feel anger at the conspiracy, there’s no other word for it. The reality of pharma and upper levels of regulation — people put these laws into place and make decisions about life saving medicines and we have no clue. Why are we still using a drug from 1973 to treat Cancer in a different century? There’s a billion reasons why Cannabis is illegal, and I’m not a conspiracy guy, but that’s what a great conspiracy is all about.

What’s the next step in your treatment?

It’s tough, and it begins right away. On Friday I go in for a procedure to have a nozzle stuck into my belly that sticks out eight inches to feed me, so when things get tough soon with radiation and chemo, I feed myself through this tube. Apparently, my type of chemo won’t make me lose my hair, the one good thing about the whole deal. But at the end of the day where we are now, it’s supposed to be curable.

Do you have any advice for people trying to use mmj?

I share the frustration of patients everywhere and all we can do is affect the people we can. For other patients, my advice is speak up. Don’t be afraid to tell your doctor, “‘When I smoke this strain I get cotton mouth, or this one gives me the munchies, or this one makes me sleep,’“ and make it clear to them to note this down. At the end of the day, it’s curable. Every single person, down to the woman I’m giving blood to later today, I’m going to say I heard it’s curable, and she’ll agree. But coming out the other side, I’m going through a battle, but I’m going to make it.

INSENSITIVE AND OUT OF TOUCH New billboard campaign in Central Washington misses opportunity to share the truth The Washington Department of Health’s (DOH) newest campaign to educate youth about pot use has sparked a new debate about how to reach communities about Cannabis use. The racially targeted billboard was pulled down within days of going up, but not before going viral internationally as tens of thousands of people collectively said “WTF.” The DOH has admitted to clearly failing to target youth and educate them about Cannabis, without admitting the larger issue at hand— they have no idea why people enjoy smoking pot. Looking past the institutional racism present in the message, this billboard is a perfect example of how out of touch our state is from the plant which they are failing to regulate. The only true takeaway from this campaign is that the DOH has no idea why people smoke pot in the first place. In addition to being a waste of a campaign, it was also extremely expensive. The DOH allocated $100,000 dollars for billboard, radio and TV ads promoting this message to teens they view as at risk for marijuana exposure. OPENING A BAG RELEASES A CLOUD OF THICKY HASHY SKUNK, WITH EARTHY RICH TONES THAT LINGER IN THE AIR.

GOD’S GIFT

ur cover strain lives up to its name as a gift to anyone lucky enough to taste and experience the beautiful flower from Tanana Herb Co. Purple, frosty and covered in trichomes, this flower is the embodiment of top shelf. Opening a bag releases a cloud of thicky hashy skunk, with earthy rich tones that linger in the air. Snapping a nug brings out the lighter and sweeter notes of citrus, pine and berries, but the dominant smell is all hash. The flower is trimmed and cured with an attention to detail, and the bag presence on this strain is at the top of the game. Smoking the bud is easy across all methods, with a cure and burn that works well in papers or for thick bong tokes. The flower burns lightly and with a white ash, very little cough but a ton of flavor that develops on the palate after the first few hits. The earthy skunk-hash still leads the way, but the lighter sweetness really comes out in the smoke, making for a balanced and layered taste experience that we enjoyed. A cross between Grand Daddy Purple and OG Kush, this Indica strain has powerful effects. The first rush is all body, with a heavy high that hits in waves and eventually settles in behind the eyes for a calming and sedative effect. This is a couch-locking spaced out afternoon time killer strain, with a mild euphoria that settles through several hours of carrying power. This strain is great for pain and also for heavy anxiety, as well as for stress and sleep issues. God’s Gift is definite enlighten alaska proof that there is so 2600 Spenard Rd. much more to Cannabis Anchorage than just total THC, and consumers who are shopping based on that number alone are losing out on some of the tastiest strains and the best effects. With extremely powerful effects and a unique and beautiful flavor profile plus top shelf looks, this is one strain you won’t want to miss!

Years ago, when I would ask my father what was new, he always answered “Same two slices, kid!” Strange, right? Well, these breads make the most of the sandwich, and there is nothing hum drum about these bready beauties. Feel free to change things around a bit, add turkey to the B.L.A.T. and substitute roast beef for the turkey in the Havarti sandwich. And grab yourself some gluten free bread if you are feeling left out!

Baked 2 was written for people who want to eat their high without sacrificing good taste. “Few marijuana cookbooks address the fact that Cannabis is a spicy, harsh-tasting plant that often doesn’t cook particularly well,” the book’s publisher said. “Baked addresses these issues head on by providing stunningly accurate visual and textual instructions on how to make marijuana foods that look and taste great.” Whether you make Cannabis treats for recreational or medicinal reasons, you will likely enjoy the broad range of tasty recipes served up in Baked 2. The book includes such gourmet delights as marshmallow meltdown, dreamy raspberry bars, peanut butter cup cookies, lavender love bites and baked fudge. Don’t forget the savory dinner delicacies such as chronic coconut chicken, spaghetti marinara, and crockpot goulash. As a chef, she quickly recognized that others could benefit from healthier, diet-conscious recipes, so she began to supply edible Cannabis treats to compassion clubs. That experience eventually led to the writing of this book.

GE T T H E T R O P I C A L F E E L I N G of a Hawaiian summertime smoke session with a Palm. These fun looking blunts are made with 100 percent organic natural

palm leaf, which is surprisingly perfect for smoking Cannabis. The palms burn slowly and evenly, with all the satisfaction of a cigar, but skipping the nicotine and harsh taste. For people who choose not to consume tobacco products, this is a great way to consume and still get the sensation of hitting a real weed cigar. Sparking a Pakalolo Palm is a satisfying experience, with a thick draw but extremely light smoke that is mildly sweet and compliments whatever strain is packed inside. The Pakalolo team fills the palms with high end Cannabis strains like Chernobyl, which MAUNA KEA tested at more than 30 percent THC, or CBD WFOG rich options such as Aloha CBD. The natural farming methods used really bring out the terpenes in the flower, bringing massive taste to these all natural wraps. The massive number of new U.S. based seed creators who simply don’t have the connections, intelligence or perseverance to successfully create relationships with larger distribution channels, eventually got swept up. The circus on wheels, also known as the high crimes Cannabis craps, is able to turn out the sea of confused patrons by pumping up varieties of Cannabis that’s better than anything you’ve ever even thought of. It’s these super “strains” that have the “highest” THC that are more exclusive than an albino eggplant and provide instant passageway into the upper, upper echelons of Cannabis coolness as manufactured, defined and promoted by these powder tooting self-appointed aristocrats that creates the inflated and false sense of a need for seeds. Giving false confidence and unqualified amounts of money to new pollen chuckers’ hands has only served to encourage them further. Fortunately there are a small handful of U.S. based souvenir Cannabis seed vendors that saw the need and invested in themselves and started cutting their teeth on the market as any wholesale distributor would. Each of the people reviewed in this article are people I have worked with and some of whom I have met personally. They have provided exceptional service, reliable results and great pricing on a huge variety of some of the most desirable lines.

LEMON SKUNK HOW IT GROWS

Hearty and tolerant, Lemon Skunk produces heavy yields and super lemony buds high in calyx-to-leaf ratios, making her easy to trim as well. Lemon Skunk has an average growing pace in veg and responds extremely well to topping. It’s a great choice for the private cultivator just getting started, as well as the commercial cultivator looking for a fast, reliable and resistant plant that patients absolutely love. With minimal manipulation she will grow into an evenly structured bush in a scarce two or three weeks and be ready to produce ample amounts of high quality medication. She’s very tolerant to various levels and styles of nutrient application and will thrive with heavy or moderate amounts of pruning and thinning. Abundant flower sites and very tight internodal spacing lends benefit to a heavier branch selection which can result in baseball bat sized kolas ripened to peak in less than 60 days in some phenotypes.

BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT the tightly spaced nodes and very high calyx-

to-leaf ratio leaves the finished flowers with the classic “skunky” looking blooms. Dark green background is almost completely encompassed by bright orange and red hairs with a light dusting of trichomes. Terpenes is where this plant concentrates her energy and her efforts are revealed when the jar is opened. Acrid, piercingly fresh scents of sweet lemon head candy set over a background of lemongrass and eucalyptus infusion stirs sentiments of blissful tranquility. One of the varieties that richly translates its aromas seamlessly to the palate bringing bright, crisp notes of sweet lemon that dominate the inhale and introduce the more tart and tongue tangling lemon lime menthol notes that coat the mouth as smoke reemerges from lung bathing.

EFFECTS much like the bright and refreshing flavors that the

terpene profile creates, Lemon Skunk provides an eye opening kick start of an effect. Perfect for daytime activities or middle of the night marathons, this smoke keeps the creative juices flowing and the energy levels on high. With just enough hybrid characteristic to keep from being jittery, Lemon Skunk is a variety that can be enjoyed over multiple sessions through the day without the side effect of any of the lethargy that can so often be the result of all day indulgence.

BY ALASKA LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR DR. SCANDERSON

ACRID, PIERCINGLY FRESH SCENTS OF SWEET LEMON HEAD CANDY SET OVER A BACKGROUND OF LEMONGRASS AND EUCALYPTUS INFUSION STIRS SENTIMENTS OF BLISSFUL TRANQUILITY.

YIELD: Heavy GENETICS: Las Vegas Lemon Skunk x likely Skunk #1 lemon phenotype (indica dominant)

LINEAGE:

The Las Vegas Lemon Skunk is a clone-only known for fast finishing times and heavy resinous yields of lemon funkin’ flowers. When that was crossed with a lemon selection believed to be Skunk #1, the Lemon Skunk was born and immediately decorated with top finishes at the Spannabis cup.

QUICK HIT: Although Lemon Skunk may sound like a common variety, properly grown and well selected blooms from this variety are anything but.

That piercing, tart, lemon head candy funk of top quality Lemon Skunk paired with the “feels so good” effect that she reliably imparts makes this cultivar a rare and treasured gem.
