JULY 2017 ISSUE #15

Thank you for picking up one my favorite issues of the year! i’ll never forget my first dab in early 2011, off a hot nail in the

back room of a medical collective in Bellingham, Wash. surrounded by plants and Rasta posters. I had been smoking Cannabis for years and by then was a well-versed medical patient, but that first dab hit me like a freight train filled with love and THC. I coughed like hell as the terp tears flowed and I fell re-in love with Mary Jane. Since that day, I have always pushed the magazine and the industry toward the best concentrates possible, and that passion has led to our annual Concentrates issue. This year’s is our most comprehensive yet, highlighting dozens of quality brands and types of extraction ranging from traditional oils like CO2 or BHO as well as new forms like Water Tech, THCA and dabbable Ethanol Hash Oil. Learning new ways to extract cannabinoids is helping the industry move forward in providing the best medicine and the safest recreational high possible. As a frequent dabber, one of my biggest concerns for my own health and the health of Cannabis consumers is residual solvents. Recently Oregon and Washington both adjusted residual solvent levels to a 5,000 parts per million (ppm) limit on most common chemicals used in the extraction of Cannabis. This is in keeping with federal guidelines built around industrial and household solvent exposures, not vaporizing concentrated oils. We need to push our legislatures and health departments to reconsider how we look at solvents in extracts, and ensure that people can dab safely and enjoy the benefits of Cannabis without being exposed to unsafe levels of solvents. I hope that this issue helps put concentrates into perspective, and helps you to learn something new about the plant that we all love and share. And check out the rest of the issue too! We have great strain reviews, new recipes and book reviews and much more for you to enjoy! —Wes Abney

Sessions Asks Congress to Let Him Go After Medical Marijuana States

The letter was sent by Sessions to Capitol Hill last month, where it was shared with MassRoots by a Congressional leaker. Hmm.

political update

By ALIZA SHERMAN for ALASKA LEAF | ILLUSTRATION by BRANDON VOSIKA

July 2017 States continue to operate under their own marijuana laws, despite federal roadblocks.

ARE THE FEDS COMING?

States with medical and adult use marijuana laws on the books are wondering if and when the feds might try to step in and enforce federal laws with state borders. In a recent hearing, Sen. Lisa Murkowski posed a question to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about Cannabis policies, and Rosenstein stated that marijuana was “properly scheduled under Schedule 1.” Murkowski also inquired about the 2013 Cole Memo that stated the federal government would not enforce federal marijuana laws in states that legalized and regulated the plant. Rosenstein’s response was that he would take it up with the new U.S. attorneys when they were in place. At the moment, things remain status quo and states, like Alaska, are operating under their independent marijuana laws. T H C FA I R J U LY 2 9 - 3 0

A new statewide campaign is launching to remind people to consume Cannabis responsibly including not driving while impaired. According to Cary Carrigan, executive director of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association (AMIA), the gist of the campaign is to “be safe and responsible while you are enjoying.” The campaign will enlist budtenders and people in the Cannabis industry across the state as spokespeople to legitimize the message. SPEAKING OF CONSUMPTION

The Alaska Marijuana Control Board (AMCB) is set to discuss three different options for on-site consumption of Cannabis proposed by board members. Peter Mlynarik, Chair of the board, proposed allowing the consumption of edibles but no smoking on site. Boardmember Brandon Emmett proposed allowing people to consume only Cannabis purchased at the specific site. Don’t look for anything going through until 2018 if this passes at all. A vote won’t happen until the August hearing and only after a 30-day public comment period. The next AMCB meeting will be held July 11 at FNSB Assembly Chambers 907 Terminal St Fairbanks, AK P L E A S E : N O D O W N T O W N M O R AT O R I U M O N C A N N A B I S

The AMIA released a statement protesting the Downtown Moratorium on Cannabis businesses proposed by several downtown business owners seeking to stifle Cannabis industry growth in Anchorage. Proving the value of the Cannabis industry in the city, Anchorage collected nearly $70,000 in marijuana sales taxes from the existing Cannabis businesses in the municipality in April, and tax revenues continue an upward trend. The AMIA is on board with responsible growth, but not in agreement with a moratorium that is in conflict with any growth. According to AMIA Executive Director Cary Carrigan, the AMIA is taking a more vocal stand to protect the progress being made by the Cannabis industry across the entire state.

OPINION

Yes, there is a better way.

WHY IT’S TIME TO RUN FROM

RICK SIMPSON OIL

UNFORTUNATELY, WE WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BURNED BY NAPHTHA EXPLOSIONS IN PROHIBITION STATES WHERE DESPERATE PEOPLE EXPLODED THEIR RSO COOK, OR HOW MANY WERE POISONED BY A POORLY PURGED PRODUCT.

12/July 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

The concerns regarding RSO can be summarized by the four S’s: Sanity, Solvent, Safety and Surety. Sanity Claims of better quality of life with FECO, used during cancer and other severe chronic condition therapies, tend to be true in my own experience. At times remission or returned health is another observed downstream effect following the treatment, however, there is no single regimen that is successful for all consumers. Run far and fast from any “guarantee of a cure” for cancer, or anything else, including RSO. This includes the claims from the Phoenix Tears and other Rick Simpson-type organizations that make routine exaggerated curative claims that appeal to desperate people. Stay sane and engage in many smart behaviors to improve your overall health. Cannabis is just one therapy among many.

Solvent FECO uses a human grade consumption ethanol or alcohol.

In 2003, a quiet revolution began unnoticed in Canada when a smarter than average and frustrated gardener reached into history and resurrected a healing method nearly forgotten after almost a century of prohibition.

One could even drink the solvent, although most of us would choose not to do so. Rick Simpson Oil by Mr. Simpson’s own instruction advocates for unsafe solvents including Naphtha and Isopropyl alcohol, both known poisons. Perhaps worse yet, Simpson himself suggests preparations made with anything other than Naphtha or Isopropyl alcohol are inferior products in spite of the obvious danger in the hands of the inexperienced and distressed patients or loved ones.

Rick Simpson tweaked the re-discovered method and watched surprised as he eradicated his own basal skin cell cancer. That gentleman tried to tell as many people as he could about his success, gradually gained a following and when the first “Run from the Cure” You Tube video appeared, a revolution was born even as he was persecuted by his own government. Good intentions abound in Simpson’s story and often amazing effects of the product have been observed. But there are several negative aspects of the preparation of Rick Simpson Oil, also known as RSO, that are rarely highlighted and easily overcome. Yet to this day, Simpson and other purveyors of the Simpson method including Phoenix Tears refuse to discuss the danger in both production and product choosing to stand by their method, rather than supporting a safer herbal based approach, or Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO). This dilemma is much like the lead pipe situations in many communities today. Certainly, when those pipes were laid a century ago, the improvement of water cleanliness was more important than any danger the encapsulated lead pipe presented. However, in an age of improved delivery materials, it is important that we take advantage of those opportunities when we can. RSO is much like this scenario. It was once a leap forward in reclaiming knowledge, but now it is oversold as a miracle, uses questionable production methods and suggests no safety testing is necessary, in contrast to the safer FECO. Yet our industry, and worse yet, the average person encountering the herbal healing tradition is lead by casual reference to the name RSO, rather than honoring the herbal tradition which Mr. Simpson clumsily revived with an unnecessarily perilous method.

Safety Above all, we want our herbal oil making to be safe. It’s not going to do us any good if we blow ourselves up making it. Naphtha, Mr. Simpson’s stated preferred solvent, is a hydrocarbon, extremely explosive in the best ventilation and poisonous as well. Unfortunately, we will never know how many people have been burned by Naphtha explosions in prohibition states where desperate people exploded their RSO cook, or how many were poisoned by a poorly purged product. Alcohol on the other hand is not nearly as explosive. And best of all, if the final product is not fully purged in a low tech or untested environment, the rough equivalent of the solvent ingested might be similar to that of the alcohol remaining in a chocolate chip cookie from the vanilla, not liver-destroying Naphtha.

Surety Testing and quality assurance are excellent final steps when those services are available in legal states. Washington is fortunate that labs will accept personal samples for testing. However, it cannot be stressed enough that in addition to explosion, this is the single most important step to assuring quality medicine especially when using noxious solvents to extract. Mr. Simpson finds this step laughable in a number of his commentaries, relying on the “follow my instructions” assurances and insisting that anyone who doesn’t subscribe to his poisonous method is a criminal misusing his name. It is important that those who are leaders and Cat Jeter is a longtime thought leaders in the growing Cannabis industry Cannabis activist and set the correct standards, expectations and use the the cofounder of Deep Green Extracts correct terminology so those who will follow observe an admirable example of best practices and are not confused. Most of us who are medically inclined in Washington know that Naphtha isn’t safe. So why do we continue to call our safe FECO made with human consumption alcohol “RSO”? It is time for us to shed the sketchy, semi-educated appearance of dangerous extractions and give up the name RSO, choosing to refer to the more credible Full Extract Cannabis Oil. Rick Simpson himself wants you to quit calling your fine extracts RSO. From his Phoenix Tears website, “There are many criminals who say that they are pro-

LONG BEFORE THE WHITE HOUSE, OBAMA ENJOYED A GREEN HOUSE

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

BARACK OBAMA

It’s been seven months since Barack Obama occupied the highest office of the land, and the lasting legacy of the 44th president of the United States is still being defined. One thing that’s for sure: he was a good president who accomplished a great deal despite historic obstruction. And, to the point: Barack Obama was probably the first president in history to consume and understand Cannabis like we understand and consume Cannabis, and that’s because—for a time, at least—he consumed it himself. Obama wasn’t just a casual smoker, according to accounts from his school classmates at Punahou High School in Honolulu in David Maraniss’ new book, Barack Obama:The Story. In fact, quite the opposite. Obama had an affinity for “hot boxing” his classmates Volkswagen bus, affectionately known as the “ChoomWagon,” and for coining the term “Total Absorption” in the social circle, which meant holding a hit as long as one could in their lungs. Classmates describe smoking “sticky green Hawaiian buds and drinking green bottle beer” with the former president. Unfortunately, after high school, Obama’s relationship with Cannabis gets a bit more, let’s say, vague. Of course, there was his famous “I inhaled frequently…. that’s the point” statement in 2006 that set then-senator Barack Obama apart from other presidential candidates by openly admitting he had smoked Cannabis as a young man. Or in 2014, when he told the New Yorker, “I don’t think it’s more dangerous than alcohol.” And, even more recently in his “exit interview” with Rolling Stone this past November, he noted his desire to see Cannabis being regulated in American like cigarettes or alcohol. In the same article Obama also praises the idea that states such as Oregon, Washington and Colorado are the perfect place to experiment with full legalization of Cannabis on the Federal level, while noting the challenges of changing the culture of the DEA. OBAMA HAD AN While Obama hasn’t admitted publicly to AFFINITY FOR smoking Cannabis since high school, he did hang out in the islands with Richard Branson “HOT BOXING” for a month after his term ended and he did HIS CLASSMATES have that wider-than-usual smile on his face… VOLKSWAGEN BUS, the whole time. Just saying. AFFECTIONATELY While many Cannabis advocates wish Obama would’ve gone further with efforts to KNOWN AS THE federally legalize, or at the very least resched“CHOOMWAGON.” ule Cannabis, it’s what he didn’t do that was so positive for the industry. For one, when Colorado and Washington legalized recreational Cannabis use, Obama took a staunch “hands off” approach from the federal level, citing state’s rights on these important issues. He also pardoned countless non-violent offenders serving long prison sentences for Cannabis-related crimes. Hopefully, this story is far from over. Now that Barack Obama has entered public life, there will be more opportunities for him to speak out politically about issues that matter to him. If we use his rhetoric

AK CANNEX Founder Loren Dreyer started a website for licensed cultivators and processors to facilitate wholesale exchanges of marijuana.

AKCANNEX WHEN DID YOU HAVE THE IDEA TO START A CANNABIS EXCHANGE? It was my daughter’s first birthday and June of last year and at that moment I knew what I wanted to do. I read all the Cannabis news outlets everyday, and I was seeing these other exchanges starting to hit different markets and I started looking into them and researching and realized there was nothing like it here in Alaska.

YOU SAW A NEED BEFORE ANYONE ELSE IN THE MARKET. WHAT DROVE THIS FOR YOU?

I was already starting to look further out to when I opened my little grow how can I sell plants, my trim, my flower. It was very obvious that there was going to be a need for a centralized wholesale hub where people could post and sell their products to licensed businesses.

WHEN DID THE SITE GO LIVE? WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE LIKE? Our site became live in January. It took me six months to get it built and to do our own internal testing. At that time, not many people were licensed, even now the industry is still just getting off the ground. It was a slow trickle early on. At first it was retailers that wanted to register to see if there was product available and then more and more people started signing up each day. We have almost 40 percent of the market of current licensed Cannabis establishments in Alaska signed up.

40 PERCENT OF THE CURRENT MARKET IS A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR SIX MONTHS OF BEING LIVE. HOW DOES THAT FEEL?

WE HAVE ALMOST 40 PERCENT OF THE MARKET OF CURRENT LICENSED CANNABIS ESTABLISHMENTS IN ALASKA SIGNED UP.

18/JULY 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

It’s exciting, people are starting to use it more and more. There’s been big wholesale growers that use it and put entire harvest on there, so we serve as their sales division, myself as a grower I’ve sold batches of clones to retail stores and growers, we’ve seen trim on there, we haven’t seen any edibles on there yet, but we’ve seen genetics, trim and flower.

SO FAR YOU HAVE MANAGED TO KEEP THE SERVICE FREE. WHY DID YOU WANT TO OFFER IT THAT WAY?

I have a cultivation license and I know how long everything has taken so when I got to point where we were set up the last

THE ALASKA CANNABIS COMMODITIES EXCHANGE

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE FUTURE FOR AKCANNEX? I see sellers using AK Cannex for everything! It’s a sales department for a business basically— you post it on there and all negotiating is done. You don’t have to call a bunch of people or go back and forth on terms, it’s all easily communicated. It saves so much time, it cuts out hours a week. I want it to be a free service that saves everybody time and makes things less stressful.

YOU ALSO JUST OPENED YOUR RETAIL STORE! CONGRATS! TELL US ABOUT THAT.

DO GROWERS ALWAYS PICK THE HIGHEST PRICE? WHAT KIND OF PRICES ARE YOU SEEING?

Alaskan Leaf is my cultivation and retail facility. It’s a small little 1,400-square-foot facility, a 1,000-foot grow and 400-foot retail store. I came from the medical market here in Alaska, I was a grower and knew growers, so I’m trying to target the home grow market, I want to sell genetics, mostly clones, maybe someday seeds, but I’ll be able to turn out a lot of clones and support home grow. I’ll grow here, I’ve built everything in my cultivation system to be simple and automated to keep costs down and be able to pass those costs savings on to consumer. I won’t have my first harvest for another few weeks, but right now I have a few strains like a GG cross, Moose and Lobster, Candy Kush, Candy Caramel Kush, Huckleberry Death Star and a handful of other strains going too.

Generally we see people take the high price but it’s not always the case, about 25 percent of time sellers pick and choose and are not as concerned. I was surprised by that, but a lot of people want to tailor their distribution, so the sellers can really fine tune their distribution strategy with us. You can see bids from all over the state, and really understand the marketplace before making a choice.

It was great. It was quite a relief, to finally get there and be able to start having money coming in. Oh yea, I’m feeling good, I’m excited to be open every day, and be a healthy competitor in the market here.

thing I wanted to do was hit people with another fee. So I made it free to make it easy for everyone to use and adopt, and while we will at some point have to start charging, or generate money with ads, we will give it through summer of 2018 free and adjust from there. I’d like to keep it free forever, but it’s a matter of operating capital to make the site better.

WHAT DOES A TRANSACTION LOOK LIKE THROUGH THE SITE? LET’S USE YOU AS AN EXAMPLE.

Let’s say I produce 40 to 50 clones every week to support my operation. I have an excess and instead of throwing away clones, I sell them. So I take a photo of the batch, I post the batch online based on the price and post it. I can choose to put a set price on it or I can put it up for auction, set terms and then retailers or growers would see the post and submit bids. The seller sees the bids coming in through their profile, so buyers can go through and see which growers bid and how much. The seller chooses a final bid point or accepts an offer, and at that point buyer and seller send a purchase agreement, they both sign and then it is up to them to execute. So, if they signed for transportation then they figure out pickup and delivery and the transaction is handled.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO FINALLY BE OPEN AND OPERATING?

A SNIFF OF THIS FLOWER IS LIKE OPENING A JAR OF HUCKLEBERRY JAM, ALL WARM FRUIT FLAVORED IN THE FRONT AND A TRULY SUBLIME COOKIES BACKGROUND

STRAIN OF THE MONTH Review by ALASKA LEAF | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN An instant classic, this frosty and flavorful strain combines the best of Girl Scout Cookies and Oregon Huckleberry for a strain experience that is truly legendary. Truthfully, this is some of the best weed we have seen anywhere on the West Coast, let alone Alaska. The small batch farming and true love and care for the plants, combined with great genetics produced a beautiful flower that is perfect in every single way. The bud structure is large and conical with a medium-high density and a crisp snap when broken open. Every bit of surface area is covered in a true frosting of trichomes that leaves a paste of finger hash on every surface the flower touches. With beautiful Cookies colors, this flower has tremendous bag appeal before even opening one up. A sniff of this flower is like opening a jar of huckleberry jam, all warm fruit flavored in the front and a truly sublime Cookies background that compliments with earthy, fuel and rich Kush. A subtle balancing act between fresh fruit and classic Cookies, this is a unique cut that has us excited about Cookies again! Tokes of the flower are sharply sweet with a light expansion and a mild exhale, making fat inhales a quick way to reach a heady high. The first effects hit the mind, with a cloudy haze of THC that settles in amid relaxing and calming vibes. Body effects follow shortly, with a heavy indica buzz that is both sedative while keeping a euphoric clear mind. Perfect for

Concentrates are extractions of Cannabis produced with or without a solvent such as butane, ethanol or CO2. Common examples in Eastern medicine include essential oils. Anyone consuming concentrates for the first time should do so with extreme caution.

THC percentages range from 20 to 90 percent, and can easily overwhelm first-timers or even more experienced users. Start with a grain of rice.

Dabbing the act of vaporizing a

DABBING 101 ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY IS THAT NEW PRODUCTS AND INNOVATIONS ARE CONSTANTLY EMERGING. The downside of this breakneck pace can be a lack of information, especially for average users. The perfect example of this knowledge delay has to be Cannabis concentrates. While most veteran patients are familiar with the likes of Rick Simpson and high-grade bubble hash, the dabbing movement has caught many by surprise. It’s a fad no more. This primer breaks down the many types of concentrates, attributes to look for (and avoid) and common lingo and prices you should expect.

Cannabis concentrate and inhaling the vapor for medicinal or recreational effects. The vapor acts as a quick and easy delivery system for Cannabinoids, and is not meant to be held in for longer than three to five seconds. Dabbing can involve a torch and a vaporization surface, commonly called a nail, attached to a water pipe. The nail is heated until hot before a small amount of concentrate is touched to the surface. Nails can be quartz or titanium, and heated externally or by a plug-in heating element, called an e-nail. The user inhales through a water pipe and the vapor is exhaled without excessive smoke or coughing, assuming a proper dosage. Patients can also use dab pens or vapor cartridges, which allow for vaporizing in a portable manner and don’t rely on having a torch.

Temperature is critical. Concentrates that are dabbed too hot will burn off the terpenes, leaving a bland taste behind. Concentrates that are dabbed too cool might leave pooled residue and not fully vaporize. The best way to reach a happy medium is to use a carb cap, which sits on top of a nail once a dab is applied and holds heat and vapor in. A carb cap is designed to vaporize an extract at the lowest possible temperature. I find that letting the nail cool down sufficiently and then using the carb cap will produce a flavorful, fully vaporized dab. Solventless extracts such as full melt bubble hash/ice wax should be dabbed at slightly higher temperatures. To determine whether your temp is right, check the color of the residue. If it’s blackish, the dab was taken too hot. If the residue is a light brown, it means

Low Temp. Dabbing DANK FUNG EXECUTIVE VAPE SET $139.99

This high-end, luxury vape is plated in 24 karat gold, which is almost as valuable as the quality concentrates being dabbed from the pen. For anyone looking to make a statement and dab portably with class and distinction, this is the choice. The glass enclosed ceramic bowl has the option of both a ceramic coilless heater and a quartz rod for heating, both of which deliver flavorful and quality dabs on the go. With three different temperature settings and great functionality, this is a winning vape for on the go dabbing.

DIPPER $149

Stylish and sleek, this handheld dabbing system is highly functional and easy to use once figured out. The first thing we noticed is that directions are only online, but once we downloaded the PDF we were good to dab from this handy portable pen. We used the Quartz Crystal Atomizer for all our test dabs, and found it to be easy to load and producing satisfying, large hits of vapor. The pen had a clean taste that emphasizes the flavor of the oil, and allowed for a solid dab experience.. A big step up from a cartridge, but still a long shot from a perfect temp dab, this tool fits right in the middle of the spectrum of dab pens, and is a great starter or travel piece for new consumers or on-the-go dabbers.

HOYES XL BANGER | $90 These 24mm extra large domeless nails are made with love in Asheville, NC using the highest quality GE214 Quartz. They offer several sizes of bangers from $70 for their 16mm regular buckets, to $120 for the 30mm XXL; they can produce any of their bangers with a flat top style, if you prefer using a bubble cap.

ESSENTIAL FUTURE RIG | $300 The future of portable dabbing is here, with a new portable dab rig that delivers tech, style and consistent temperature that can bring dabs to any location, any time. Long has the balance between portability and function plagued dabblers who risked travel E-nails, but no more! This rig combines the battery power needed for a long trip and the functionality that only comes from a passion for dabbing and Cannabis consumers. Developed in Colorado, this kit features a modded battery with an LED screen, variable temperatures and voltages, Bluetooth functionality and a sweet glass and ceramic heating element for vaporizing concentrates at the perfect temperature. Dabbing concentrate through this pen is the closest we have come with a portable unit to a real dab hit. The water function is a nice touch, mellowing out the vapor and sending waves of pure vapor right to the lungs. We especially liked the consistency in temperature, the easy-tofunction controls, and the stylish case that made the whole thing travel portable. With the ability to easily recharge and hit the road, this is the perfect on the go travel dab kit that can also function as a home unit for consumers not interested in torches or e-nails.

HOYES CLEAR CAP | $30

The Hoyes directional airflow caps add even more functionality to the Hoyes XL Banger. As you spin the cap the air mixes the oil around the banger to evenly spread it and insure a more even temp. The cap works best on the XL Banger, but you can flip it upside down if you’re using the deeper XXL and the long handle works perfectly to get the airflow deep enough to stir the oil. Fits most sizes.

My favorite way to enjoy

concentrates is to dab them at a low temperature on a quality quartz banger with a directional carb cap to insure even vaporization of your concentrate. Dabbing your concentrates at a lower temperature allows you to fully appreciate the subtler terpenes and provides, in my opinion, a much gentler come up and effect compared to hot dabs. However, I understand that if you need to be medicated as quickly as possible a hot dab could be the best answer for you, I personally think it’s well worth the wait for the banger to cool closer to a vaporization temperature. One critical factor to low temperature dabbing is cleaning your banger each time before reheating. If you’ve dabbed near the correct temperature, the remnants of oil should be fairly easy to wipe off of the banger with a clean cotton swab. Keep in mind it might take two swabs to completely clean the banger: my clean test for the banger is keep wiping until you can use a fresh swab and nothing comes off. If any oil remains, or was baked onto the nail from being dabbed at too high of a temperature, you can wait for your banger to almost completely cool and use cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl alcohol and eventually it will come off. Worst case, torch your banger clean, but know that you each time you clean this way your banger will be slightly degraded. To best extend the life of your banger, always make sure you’re cleaning thoroughly with swabs before resorting to torching it clean. Although you might want to learn on a more affordable set up, I highly recommend investing in an American made GE214 quartz banger, a quartz or boro carb cap (preferably directional flow), and a high-grade titanium dabber. By investing in a quality dab set up you’ll take better care yourself and also your equipment. You can still get great results from more affordable set ups, but to fully appreciate your concentrates in the long run, it’s worth it to take the extra steps and invest in quality equipment that supports our economy and culture.

BUTANE HASH OIL BHO, refers to Cannabis concentrate processed with the solvent butane. Properly processed in a safe environment with medicalgrade butane, BHO can be one of the highest-quality concentrates, especially for taste and effects. BHO is made by putting Cannabis buds or trim in a system that forces butane over the material at high pressure, stripping Cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and flavonoids for delicious and beautiful extracted oil. BHO is known for capturing the true essence of a strain when done right, especially as live resin, which involves fresh frozen Cannabis from harvest until processing. When flowers are processed into concentrates with solvents, they need to be purged and pasteurized for safe consumption. Nearly a dozen different dangerous chemicals can end up in concentrates, and they must be tested to ensure a product is safe. In the purging process, pressure and heat are combined to help purify the concentrates by removing processing chemicals. All BHO should be tested by a lab for residual solvency, which is the amount of butane or other potentially harmful hydrocarbons left in the mixture. Any product for consumption should be at less than 500 parts per million, with the

ORCHID ESSENTIALS OrchidEssentials.com

Great flavored distillate with strong, strain-specific effects. Favors include Lemon Kush, Dutch Treat, Jack Herer, Strawberry Cough and Bubba Kush!

First, ask the budtender if it is cut with any solvent, or look on the packaging. We recommend avoiding anything cut with Propylene Glycol, especially for patients, because there are safer and healthier options available. Also, avoid anything with an artificial sounding flavor like Blue Raspberry or Waffles. Look at the vape package to see if the flavor is naturally derived, and if so, go for it. While there are no rules governing flavors in E-cigarettes or Cannabis cartridges currently, we feel that strain specific and naturally processed options are the best! Vaporization can be one of the most desirable and pleasurable ways to consume Cannabis, especially when discretion counts. You should not vape indoors or where ever it is specifically mentioned, such as on an airplane or bus. Feel free to use outdoors when your vapor will not bother others or be near children. Consumers will find a variety of battery options, from disposable types that have a non-rechargable battery and last about 200 hits, to ones with USB charging capabilities and changable cartridges.

DR. VERT

Barry’s Bubble Sour Al

Solventless extract that was pressed from 70 microns, full melt hash. No residue is left behind on the nail as the chlorophyll has been filtered out.

Preparation Kevin Hartman walks us through the steps to DIY. Turn on your machine, get ready to start heating and have all the products ready to go.

1

Turn the bag inside out using a pair of forceps, Why? it puts the seam on the inside of the bag and allows more oil to leave the bag in the pressing process and creates a cleaner separation, where the thread can potentially hold the oil in.

2

Pack the bags, removing large stems and ending up with 0.3 to 0.5 gram nugs, aiming to pack the bag out evenly so that it squishes evenly and you get even expansion across everything. These 2x3’s have 4 grams, we run 4/20 grams of these. We tamp down the bud until it is a snug pack.

3

Placement. Generally we will fold over the last bit of excess, and we place the bag directly on the center of the plates, so it slides into the plates and holds in place.

4

First press. This is our manual setup, so you hand pump and follow the gauge, and with this manual press, we run up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, and that starts the process of mechanical separation, and starts the timer for exposure time. We gradually increase pressure every 15 seconds for about 45 seconds to one minute, to have peace of mind that everything has been extracted out, then release and pull out.

5

Remove bag immediately and peel off parchment paper, then use a scraping tool to collect the Rosin from the parchment paper. We use a skillet tool, but generally a good skinny flat pointed dabber or a Rosin stamp for collection works well.

6

Collect the material into a ball through gentle pulling of the oil from the paper or mesh with a dab tool. If polishing is chosen, press the oil into a finer mesh and re-squish to polish If needed.

ROSIN technology has pushed the extraction of Cannabis forward with expensive machines, exotic solvents and methods requiring more advanced science year after year.

But Rosin is a method of Cannabis extraction that uses methods much simpler and cleaner than most solvent processes. Rosin is totally natural and uses only heat and pressure. So get squishing!

TEMPERATURE + BIG PRESSURE 200° F is the standard for Rosin, but can go down to 180F and as high as 220° F. The flower takes on 20 tons of pressure!

Q&A

Chatting with the owner of MASH,

the longtime NW company making screens for squishing rosin and building machines that help consumers and companies alike extract the most natural form of Cannabis.

How did you get involved in the Cannabis community and start innovating with these products? Been working with mesh and shirt supplies for 18 years, and we have worked to provide mesh and screens to hash makers back in 1999. I was doing dry sift hash with tumblers and I would take mesh from the shop and put it around a drum with holes in it and tumble it over a piece of glass. That was my first experience with hash making. I’ve been selling raw mesh to hash makers for as long as I have worked at the company. So then I became friendly with Cannabis processors and would talk in a way where people could trust, as soon as Washington legalized it was a whole different ballgame. It’s like night and day, and now we are in the mainstream providing to pot companies all over the country.

So you’ve been at this for a long time, making and helping others make dry sift and solventless bubble hash. When did Rosin come on the scene for you? When BHO became illegal for patients to process in Washington in 2015 we saw a shift from people using basic technology like hair straighteners and modified shirt presses toward commercial extraction of Rosin. We started selling a lot more of our bags that are specifically designed for Rosin then, and started making our own machines and ultimately selling them.

WE SAW A SHIFT FROM PEOPLE USING BASIC TECHNOLOGY LIKE HAIR STRAIGHTENERS AND MODIFIED SHIRT PRESSES TOWARD COMMERCIAL EXTRACTION OF ROSIN.

Since that time, Rosin has really taken off nationally, and you guys are at the cutting edge of providing the best bags for squishing the material in, as well as machines for companies to use. Can you tell us about your process? Early on with hash making with Rosin we realized that regular screen printing meshes weren’t necessarily the best for it, and you might see other Rosin makers using dyed or yellow bags, which yellow mesh is something specific for screen printing, but what we found is that the dyes will leach into the hash, so we only use a dye free bags and threads. The reason we know it is we’ve seen purple threads on bags that turned the oil that color, so dye free is what we go with. We also use only stainless steel in our plates for pressing, which protects the plant matter from metals like aluminum or titanium, and we have quality electronic controls that are safe and easy to use.

What makes MASH different and how do you support your clients? We do a lot of training for customers, people can certainly come to our shop for a demo and we will show benefits of our bags and presses, and we can do handson at our location or theirs, and we will go to them and train people how to do it, and we often leave the press there because they buy it! We want our customers to be as successful as possible, and really go the extra mile to give the support and education needed!

KEVIN HARTMAN HAS BEEN A HASHMAKER SINCE 1999 AND ROSIN SINCE 2015. Where do you see the rosin market heading in the future? The Rosin market is a fraction of a fraction of consumers, so it’s an area that we think we need to inform the consumers more on the safety and cleanliness of Rosin. I think people are still hitting BHO because its less expensive, companies are still doing it because it’s on the books efficient and they white label, or if they do it on their own they spend $100,000 to build a 502 room. But for a few thousand and training you can do in-house and keep your trimmers and baggers employed and hold profit. We are seeing same, if not better, results from Rosin than BHO, so you can get a better yield in-house and not outsource, that’s a triple win, and the price of rosin is certainly higher than BHO in the market. I think eventually that could come down too.

TERMS & CANNDITIONS

MICRON SIZE This measurement refers to the tiny holes that allow the oil to pass through. One hundred and twenty microns is a very common size for Rosin, though flower might be pressed as small as 70 or 90 microns for dry material or trim, and as high as 150 to 220 microns for more coarse material. For people pressing bubble hash or dry sift, we recommend either 25 or 37 micron bags. An interesting note—the smaller the microns, the finer the threads, which is why the smaller micron bags are more expensive than larger.

POLISHING

Like winterizing an oil or dewaxing, polishing is a final press of collected oil that is done about 25 percent of the time. If there are any particulates left over or the bag had a blow out, a final lower pressure squish purifies quality and delivers the best looking and tasting product. The best temperature for polishing is 180 to 190, with about half the pressure of a flower squish.

BLOWOUT

Basically we are using extreme pressures, 20 tons can lift several cars and a bag is only so strong, you put a pillow of weed in the mesh, put excessive pressure things tend to break under impact, we tend to ease it, so it heats the pillow while slowly building pressure, we ease into the pressure.

RETURNS

With squishing flower there is a close correlation between THC percentage and overall return percent. If a plant is 20 percent THC, you can roughly expect a 20 percent return, so 5 grams of flower can yield up to a single gram of Rosin. With bubble hash or dry sift, the return is usually 50 percent, but can be in the 60s with great material.

CO 2 extraction is one of the

cleanest and safest methods of extracting any type of plant matter. Carbon dioxide is pumped at often supercritical temperatures under high pressure to pull cannabinoids from the plant material, leaving a pure concentrate. CO2 is not toxic to humans and kills any microbial growth in the process of extraction. Plus, CO2 can be used to create natural essential oils in addition to Cannabis concentrates. Mainstream products processed with CO2 include herbal essential oils, hops for beer and decaffeinated coffee. Because of the considerable investment required to process CO2 (roughly $75,000) the average gram retails for around $30-$60 per gram. The cell walls of the Cannabis plant can sometimes contain large wax concentrations. Unfortunately for consumers, plant waxes are one of the leading causes of excessive coughing when dabbing. By washing the concentrate sample with alcohol, the wax will remain in the container and the cannabinoids will be absorbed into the alcohol and distilled off as the alcohol evaporates in a separate container. Concentrates with higher amounts of plant waxes and lipids will require a higher temperature to dab and, as pointed out earlier, will cause more irritation on the throat and lungs. Special note: Any concentrate that has an ethanol wash should be tested for residual alcohol. Residual alcohol at high ppm can be harmful if vaporized.

Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) is a pure Cannabis extract that has been used for decades to fight cancer along with other diseases.

FECO pulls a wide range

of beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that are successful in treating a huge variety of conditions. It should only be made with pure alcohol, food-grade ethanol or grain alcohol, and should be properly purged of residual alcohol before ingestion. FECO should never be vaporized or dabbed because inhaling alcohol is bad for the central nervous system and the brain. When eaten, the alcohol is safe for use. While FECO should be made available at a compassion rate, the average price is $25 to $50 per gram in most recreational dispensaries and it can go higher. FECO is often in the range of 40-70 percent THC, meaning it has 400-700 mg of overall cannabinoids present per gram. Often the oil comes in CBD-dominant, THC-dominant or 1:1 ratios of THC and CBD, or can have a cannabinoid blend specific to the strain it is extracted from. Dosing FECO begins with a drop of the oil the size of a grain of rice, and can be consumed raw or in a capsule form. To help common ailments and treatments of pain this dose size is a perfect starter, and can be built up from there to larger amounts.

Dosing FECO begins with a drop of oil no bigger than a grain of rice and can be consumed raw or in a capsule form. For common ailments and treatments of pain, this dose size is a perfect starter.

DEEP GREEN

FECO

For those seeking to treat cancer or other life threatening ailments, a more rigorous dosing protocol of FECO is recommended. This can mean up to a gram of oil or more a day, which is a dose that often comes with “Green Sickness, which is an overwhelming response to the massive amount of cannabinoids the body is taking in. This can lead to anxiety, nausea and general discomfort, but it is also masking what is happening internally. The cannabinoids are going to work. Those interested in treating a terminal illness with FECO should look into dosing schedules that slowly build up tolerance, and ensure that they are prepared fully before starting a treatment plan. For those looking to receive more average condition medicinal benefits, starting small is always the best bet, because you can always eat a little more!

DIRTY ARM FARM CBD Isolate

Provides incredible relief from anxiety, inflammation and pain. Best used as a bowl topper or dipped in another extract.

DISTILLATE Cannabis distillate is a solvent free process that extracts up to 98% THC or CBD in a refined and pure manner. While every company has a different method, the most basic form of creating distillate starts with an already processed Cannabis product like bubble hash, FECO, BHO or CO2. The Cannabinoids (mainly THC) are generally pulled from the starting product with steam and then fractionally distilled to refine the final oil into a pure form.

The result is a product that is often 80 to 98 percent THC or CBD and free of adulterants or plant matter. Distillate can be thought of as a Cannabis essential oil that is pure of residual solvents, including those from the starting material, and can be used for dabbing, cooking edibles, as a vapor cartridge or more. Distillate is sold typical in a “raw” form, which is mostly flavor free, or can be infused with Cannabis terpenes or natural fruit terpenes. As always, we recommend avoiding anything with unnatural or artificial flavoring, Looking at you, Cereal Flavored Terps. The best option for a tasty distillate dab is to add natural terpenes derived from Cannabis to the oil!

THCA

THC-A is the acid form of THC that is quickly becoming a highly sought after concentrate in the world of cannabinoid extractions.

Non-psychoactive in a raw form, this acid form of THC has many medicinal and recreational benefits. When the Cannabis plant is maturing, the THC that we all know and love starts out as THC-A. As the plant matures and is cured after harvest, the THC-A slowly converts into THC. This is natural process when the plant is curing, and any remaining THC-A on the flower is converted to THC when heat is applied while smoking. Extracting THC-A is in most ways the reverse of that process. Extractors take a finished distillate process and through a heating, distilling and re-cooling method the distillate is turned into a vapor form, and as it cools the THC converts back into THC-A as a crystalline form, and the shards are collected like little miniature diamonds of cannabinoid gold from inside a collector. Note — this is a non-scientific description of a process that is highly valuable to the extractors who make these crystals. Once the crystals are collected, they are the purest form of THC-A on the planet. Often in the 95-99 percent potency range, there are two main uses for THC-A: medicinally in an unactivated form or vaporized for an extremely pure and potent high. THC-A is known for anti-epileptic effects and is useful in the treatment of many other ailments. The other and most popular way to consume THC-A is to dab it. Although it is inactivated raw, dabbing it converts the THC-A to THC, and delivers an extremely powerful and potent high. THC-A often sells for $100 or more for a gram, making it one of the most expensive concentrates on the market. Dabbing it produces a strong THC high, and delivers it in a vapor that is for the most part flavorless and odorless. What is most appealing about this treatment is that there is no psychoactive high and so it is a great treatment for those not seeking a head high.

a dab of THC-A inhales like a whisper and exhales like a dragon’s breath, imparting a stunning and heavy body high that overtakes the mind with waves of raw THC.

OLEUM EXTRACTS

Holding a hit for a long time is recommended with this vapor, to allow the most cannabinoids to enter the body. We recommend taking a small dab of BHO or CO2 and then rolling it lightly in THC-A crystal, making for a dab that is high in flavor and potency. Look for THC-A at your local dispensary, and Google medicinal benefits for more information about how this cannabinoid can benefit you medicinally and recreationally!

Pua Extractions WIFI X TRES SIS FULL MELT An extremely pungent strain that leaves little to no residue behind. Euphoric and cerebral effects make this a great day time option.

Bred by @TheGhostoftheNorthside

HASH Solventless hash is rated generally on a 1-6 star rating system. Hash is also often priced based off the star rating, ranging from $10 a gram for 1-star up to $100 a gram for 6-star. Here is a basic breakdown of how those stars are rated and why.

1-STAR

Varied color, very harsh earthy taste. When heated, will not fully combust. This type of hash is best used for cooking, but can be smoked with patience.

Dabbable? No | Melt level: 1 (0% melt) | $10-$15/g

2-STAR

Dark green with an earthy flavor. When heated, forms a slight sheen and combusts. This lower-grade hash is great for cooking or smoking, though will have a harsh and earthy flavor when smoked. Dabbable? No | Melt level: 2 (15-25% melt) | $15-$20/g

3-STAR

Dark brown, earthy with hints of original strain flavor. When heated, it forms small bubbles on the surface, then combusts. This type of bubble hash is perfect for loading on a bowl of flower or rolling into a joint. Dabbable? No | Melt level: 3 (50%) | $25/g

4-STAR

Light brown, less pronounced flavor profile but showing stronger hints of original strain flavor. When heated, bubbles into a puddle. This is the lowest star level suitable for dabbing, as it will have a very earthy/planty flavor and may leave residue on the nail.

Dabbable? Yes | Melt level: 4 | (60-70% melt) | $30-$40/g

5-STAR

Fully melts into oil when heated but leaves a slight residue and flavor of plant matter when smoked. Dabbable? Yes | Melt level: 5 |(80-90% full melt) | $50+/g

6-STAR

Light/blond colored resinous gold, super fine texture. Forms into almost transparent slab when pressed. This should taste and smell like the purest nectar of the strain, which it essentially is. Dabs easily on a nail, leaving zero plant matter taste and an extremely smooth smoke. Dabbable? Yes | Melt Level: 6 | (100% full melt) $60+/g

SOLVENTLESS

and bubble hash refers to hash or kief that has been processed and collected using only water and ice or a dry sift method to gather Cannabis trichomes and cannabinoids into a smokable form. It is one of the most labor-intensive ways to process Cannabis and takes a lot of patience and knowledge to create the highest-grade oils. When done right, the concentrate produced from either water or sift extracting can be considered the best oil in the world — pure, solventless, and with a true representation of a strains effects and flavors. Today, a huge variety of extraction methods and tools exist for making hash. Still, we find the best way involves ice, water and a little bit of elbow grease.

Ethanol Hash Oil, or EHO, is a full spectrum concentrate that uses Ethanol as the only solvent in the process. Cannabis is processed in this method through

the combination of pure, or often organic, alcohol with raw buds or trim, under pressure or in the form of a long soak, with the alcohol kept at as low of temperatures as possible. The combination of the natural solvent and cold temperature pulls the full spectrum of Cannabinoids, waxes, lipids, terpenes and other desirable compounds while leaving behind plant matter and chlorophylls. The end result is a beautiful oil that can have a variety of textures, but the defining factor is the beautiful color and taste that is unlike that produced by any other extraction method.

Thicker crumble with bright sweet fuel flavor and a heady and energetic hybrid mind/body high.

EINSTEIN LABS

Blueberry EHO

Thicker and waxy budder with complex earthy notes before blueberries slam senses.

The most common form of this final extract is

a beautiful honey crumble, with a light, wet and waxy texture that is oozing with terps and flavor. Often the raw terpenes will begin to separate from the bulk of the concentrate, such is the intensity of the raw terpenoids and the pure essential nature of this method. While this technology and technique has been used for thousands of years to extract plants and other compounds, the concept of creating dab-able oil from ethanol is only just now being utilized by the Cannabis community, with a handful of companies making these fire oils. In contrast to Full Extract Cannabis Oil, EHO can

be eaten but is best consumed via vaporizing. What makes this form of oil extra special is the fullness of the high, and the smoothness that comes from a low solvent extract that is rich in Cannabinoids and terpenes.

WATER TECH A new concentrate is sweeping through the heady netherworlds of extractors and connoisseurs alike that you must see to believe.

oleum aqua tek contains 74.16% THC + 18.46% CBD, which is a highly useful combo for medicinal or recreational highs.

48/July 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

No, it’s not a fad, and yes, it does look like water. But this transparent form of concentrate is truly clear, and a refined product that is unique in every way. Known in popular culture as Water Tech or Water Clear, the Oleum version is called Aqua Tek and is being processed daily for the recreational market. Aqua Tek is a distillate that is cleaned before distillation, filtered and scrubbed for lipid, wax and terpene removal before distillation. The next step is to add proprietary compounds to the boiling flask, and when the fractioning process begins, which separates cannabinoids and makes traditional clear, you pull different non-desirable compounds, and the main fraction pull becomes this really light, clear water. Often high in Delta-8 THC instead of traditional Delta-9, this extract is extremely pure and can contain up to 99 percent cannabinoids. The extract shown on this page contains 74.16 percent THC and 18.46 percent CBD, which is a highly valuable profile for medicinal or a recreational high. Although it is very similar to a distillate high, the Aqua Tek has its own unique flavor that is unlike anything else. There is a distinct smoothness to the vapor, and a very clean and light flavor with a mild underlying sweetness. The high is powerful and deep, and extremely long lasting although it carries an average price of $75 a gram. As an activated concentrate, it is especially great for edible ingestion. The team at Oleum is always experimenting with different extraction methods and filtration systems, and they really have a hit with the Aqua Tek. Ask for it at your favorite dispensary today, and try the newest form of concentrate to hit the market!
