Thanks for picking up the first

Alaska Leaf Hemp Issue!

i am excited to shine a light on some of the pioneering farms growing

hemp on the West Coast, and to get the chance to show the beauty as well as the sustainability hemp brings to the table. Truthfully and personally, I believe hemp can change the world! Our planet is being destroyed by humanity choosing to ignore a sustainable option by killing trees, burning oil, petrochemicals and discount a healthy and nutritious source of food and medicine that can meet almost all needs as a society. Hemp is the only plant that gives back to the Earth while healing as a bio accumulator, pulling heavy metals, toxins and radiation out of the soil, which is why it can be found growing at nuclear sites like Chernobyl. Where we really need hemp growing is in backyards across the country. Not merely because of the billions of dollars it can save as an industrial product, and not just because of the enormous medical benefits. It can be as simple as harvesting hemp seeds for a healthy snack. It’s about freedom. As a society, we have come far enough that we must demand the freedom to grow an industrial plant that causes no harm. Our world needs a new source of food, fuel, fiber and energy—and we can start spreading it in backyard gardens. Just as our own government asked citizens to grow hemp for victory in World War II, we must again call on our brothers and sisters to plant hemp for victory. Victory over the petrochemical companies that destroy our lands and poison our waters. Victory over the logging companies that would rather cut old growth forest than lobby to use hemp. Victory over the pharmaceutical companies that would rather patent CBD from hemp or THC from Cannabis than see people treat themselves. There is a War on Drugs, and a battle for our planet’s survival and hemp is at the center of it all. I encourage you to learn more about this plant, to find out how you can plant your own hemp garden and to help change the world one plant at a time. —Wes Abney

The AMCB continues to seek public comments on proposed rules for Cannabis cafes. Alaska residents can submit comments via email to amco.regs@alaska.gov or by postal service. The campaign came out of the Office of Substance Misuse and Addiction Prevention, part of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and was paid for with federal funds. The campaign includes a television spot as well as printed materials including posters that Cannabis retailers can hang up in shops. The television commercial features two Alaska retail marijuana shop owners who discourage consuming marijuana and driving. Walsh Sheppard, an Anchorage-based ad agency, helped develop the campaign that will run through the end of the year.

The state has begun awarding the “Made in Alaska” designation to Cannabis businesses. One of those businesses, cultivator and retailer Arctic Herbery in Anchorage, recently received the official blue and white emblem featuring the polar bear logo for the “Made in Alaska” program. Having this designation is a boon for Cannabis business owners who can gain more market exposure, especially to tourists. Arctic Herbery also received a certificate authenticating its Cannabis as grown in Alaska and stating that the Herbery was “found to meet the eligibility requirements established” by Alaska statutes. Now, the company can use the Made in Alaska logo for its product lines. Members of the Cannabis industry cite the acceptance of marijuana businesses into the Made in Alaska program as a positive sign of the normalization of attitudes toward Cannabis in the state. The state partners with the Alaska Small Business Development Center to offer workshops and webinars to educate business owners in the program. Upcoming expos for Made in Alaska companies include the Make It Alaskan Festival at the Sullivan Arena Oct. 6-8, the Alaska State Fair Holiday Bazaar Oct. 21-22, the Fairbanks and Wasilla Holiday Marketplaces and Sitka’s Artisans Market & Holiday Craft Party. No word if Cannabis-based products are allowed. Interested Cannabis businesses can apply for Made in Alaska designation through the Division of Economic Development.

August tax revenue numbers will be published this month by the state.

Southside Garden Supply

The Anchorage growing superstore held its eighth annual customer appreciation party with free munchies, casino-style games and plenty of fun vendor giveaways

S

“THE STIGMA IS GONE ABOUT BEING AT THE GROW STORE AND NOW WE ARE IN AN EMERGING INDUSTRY AND HELPING TO BUILD THE ALASKA CANNABIS BRAND OUTSIDE THE STATE.” Co-Owner Julie Martin

outhside Garden Supply celebrated their eighth annual customer appreciation party last month in a community event that brought vendors and customers together in a fun and friendly environment.

The burgeoning superstore recently moved to their new location on on Arctic Boulevard, which features a huge open-floor layout and beautiful high ceilings, stocked with everything needed to enter the world of Cannabis cultivation. Over 400 customers came out to enjoy the Casino themed party, where hitting the jackpot meant a chance to win a wide selection of awesome prizes. “We save all our promo items for the year and give them all away in one day, along with all the prizes our vendors donate! We really like to have a good time, to say thank you to our customers, because without them there’s not us,” said co-owner Julie Martin. “We’re here for the community and it feels good to throw a party to celebrate everyone.” The layout of the vendor booths and casino games made for a lively crowd, as customers took their chance at roulette, blackjack and other games while talking with vendors and enjoying complimentary food and drinks. Chips were cashed in at the gaming tables in exchange for raffle tickets, and each vendor booth had their own drawing for a particular prize. Over a dozen vendors from brands ranging from Advanced Nutrients to Alaskan Fish Fertilizer set up tables and handed out samples, meeting with customers and sharing their knowledge in a friendly environment, and offering a chance to win a gift pack of sponsored products. “We gave away bulbs, ballasts, shields, nutrients, dirt and more-- there was something to be won from every part of the store,” Martin said excitedly. “We gave aways a ton of products, and it was really exciting to see the vendors connect with the customers as they learned about all the different brands we carry.” Vendors flew in from all over the country to celebrate the store, and experience the best of the Alaskacanna community. Most used the trip as an opportunity to tour recreational gardens and dispensaries as well, bringing attention to the growing industry and helping connect the marketplace to companies that do international business. “This is a get the community together type of event in an industry that is built on community. The stigma is gone about being at the grow store and now we are in an emerging industry and helping to build the Alaska Cannabis brand outside the state,” Julie said. “These vendors travel all over the world, and this is some of the most valuable interactions that they get in the entire country, coming up here and meeting with the growers and getting in touch with the roots of the industry. We’re excited that in 2017 in Alaska that this is what we can do, and we’re excited about what our superstore is going to bring to the community.” As the Southside brand continues to grow, the staff and family owners behind the counter continue to grow and share their love for Cannabis, growing, and the industry that supports it all. “We 100% support growers because they 100% support us,” co-owner Rob Martin said. “We wouldn’t have it any other way.”

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? It came into my life in rural Alaska. Bethel, actually, is where I first fell in love with Cannabis. Alaska has a lot of alcohol problems, and Cannabis was something I found relieving and healing and made me feel good and grew from the ground. There’s no aftermath to Cannabis, there’s always an aftermath to other things. I fell in love with it because I felt everyone could benefit from it, and I’ve had it ever since.

Each month, the Alaska Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Alaska Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

CHELSEA BEVERIDGE

HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE RIGHT CANNABIS FOR THEIR NEEDS?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

Questions. Asking them when they want to smoke it, what they’re expecting or hoping to experience, if flavor or aroma matters or if they don’t want to smoke it at all. Questions, answers and explaining my experiences with the strains all leads us to find the right Cannabis for a consumer. I try all the strains in the store so that I can give better recommendations for consumers. People almost always buy what I recommend, and it feels like my lifelong connection with Cannabis is finally paying off. Because all the compassion I have built in my life toward the product shows, and they can feel how much I care about the plant and that I want people to have the best experience possible.

I’ve been a budtender here since we opened [July 2017]. My favorite part is creating a passionate and compassionate environment for anybody to come and get Cannabis. Being able to offer Cannabis products to people is really rewarding, and when people walk into the store they are so happy. We’re like a family here, and we’re all happy to help, and people pick up on that energy and they have a great time while they’re here.

WHY DO YOU LIKE GREAT NORTHERN CANNABIS?

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONSUME? Well, I’m a really healthy person, but my favorite way to smoke is blunts. I really enjoy them — I like Phillies. But I also really enjoy the Volcano. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, but it’s very different from a blunt. In terms of daily use, I smoke a lot of pre-rolls and the pens because they are convenient and fit into my lifestyle really well. They have no smell so I can use them continuously without a problem.

FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS, EFFECTS AND TERPENE PROFILES, PERSONALLY? Our inhouse Super Lemon Haze is amazing. It’s productive and uplifting and you don’t get the munchies. It tastes good and smells good, it’s got all the limonene terpenes in it. Space Queen also has such a high terpene profile, and it smells so good. Those are two strains I recommend a lot to people. Chernobyl is also really nice, but personally I’m more of a sativa and cerebral high girl. Indicas have a time and a place, but I’m a daily all-day smoker and sativas are what work for me.

18/oct. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Indicas have a time and a place, but I’m a daily all-day smoker and sativas are what work for me.

I love my crew. I’m the night supervisor and the crew is amazing, it’s such a pleasant experience to work with people who are so compassionate. Having our own cultivation allows us to compete with the black market and bring people into the recreational market. We always have $10 grams. Our prices, plus wide selection of strain options, bring people in. We also run discounts every day to recognize the customer’s needs and what they enjoy and make sure they feel valued.

budtender of the month A lifelong Alaskan, Chelsea is a highly-recommended budtender with a winning smile and a commanding knowledge of the products she sells at Great Northern Cannabis. She really listens to her customers to help them make the best choice.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? I’m a fulltime mom, that’s my number one hobby. He’s amazing, he’s my man. I’m also a holistic healer, I do quantum biofeedback therapy, its electromagnetic medicine. It’s connecting with someone’s electromagnetic wave, testing 5,000 perimeters of the body and altering their frequency to be more electrically balanced. When the body has disease, you’re not balanced, so if you become electrically balanced it’s much easier to heal. I also love anything motorized, dirt bikes, snow machines, four wheelers, and anything healthy. Surfing, when I’m great northern in Hawaii. I also really want cannabis to grow with the Cannabis industry here, that’s my goal 541 W 4th Ave Anchorage and hobby and passion.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

Montel Williams became a household name in the 1990s as host of

The tv show host was well-known for inspiring guests to spill their secrets. and when it comes to using Cannabis as medicine, Williams isn’t holding anything back.

his self-titled show, but the author, activist and media personality’s life story is far more interesting than most. Williams is a decorated veteran, having served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. He’s credited as being the first African American male to host a daytime talk show. With his television program, often called Montel, Williams began as a sort of tabloid-style host – but over time the program moved toward the positive spectrum of life and eschewed the controversial. By the time the program ended in 2008, it was more focused on uplifting messages of love and hope. Williams was dealt a tough blow in 2000 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The disease, his doctor at the time told him, would cut his life in half. Williams started to search for answers, and after being prescribed an heavy cocktail of opioids , he finally encountered a physician who recommended Cannabis. At this point, he does not smoke anymore, and instead uses concentrates. He’s also opened his own dispensary, and more recently, started Lenitiv Labs – a concentrate company focused on purely medical applications for Cannabis in California. “There have been times I’ve been so disappointed with the industry. People jump in, see it as the ‘green rush,’ and forget that 17 years ago people were dragged out of their homes with IVs in their arms, in their wheelchairs, for growing marijuana to treat awful symptoms of cancer,” Williams told Forbes this year. “As things have changed in the past five years, people have forgotten that there were patients left on the battlefield.” Today, Williams is keeping the disease at bay with Cannabis. He’s already healthier than his doctor predicted years ago with his original diagnosis. It’s important to remember that Montel Williams was an early adopter to Cannabis legalization, and he’s been doing so for more than 17 years. That puts him well ahead of many of the celebrities we’ve featured in this column. Without mainstream voices like his, we may have never seen state-level legalization in the United States. And for that, we say a very hearty ‘thank you’ and ‘cheers’ to good health for Montel!

WILLIAMS SAID HE HAS CONSUMED CANNABIS ALMOST EVERY DAY FOR 17 YEARS.

onnecting veterans with education, growing supplies, support and community is the driving force behind Cannacare, Alaska’s first and only Cannabis-based support group for those who have served our country.

FOR CANNACARE FOUNDER RACHEL LAKE, the

mission to help veterans with Cannabis began while her family was still living in the military system. While her husband served in the Marines, she found herself facing medical issues and a lack of answers or information about how to heal herself. Cannabis became her saving grace and she set out to make sure that others had access and information when her family made the move to Alaska three years ago. “I’ve always been a Cannabis user, but as I got older I started developing health issues, including fibromyalgia and cervical stenosis, which narrows the bones over the nerves in my neck,” Lake said. “I live with the pain and I used to be able to deal with it, but eventually it got to the point where I couldn’t deal with it even using pharmaceuticals.” Lake was on nine prescription drugs, not getting the benefits she needed, and felt left behind by the pharmaceutical medical system. She got her California medical Cannabis card and began learning about the plant and how it would help her. The results were immediate. Her husband and doctors noticed she was happier, healthier and enjoying a better quality of life. “I finally said ‘Enough is enough, I’m not a guinea pig.’ My doctors had me on pills that would leave me drooling and unable to care for my child. That all went away when I started using Cannabis medicinally,” she said. “My husband noticed when I smoke a joint, versus my pills, that I could function and be present—I realized too that a little amount of pain is okay. You can live with a little amount, it lets you know that you’re alive, but Cannabis lets you live without the fear of massive pain or being sedated and detached on pills.” Her husband served 12 years and when the family moved to Alaska, Lake found herself back at square one trying to find quality Cannabis. She realized that she wasn’t alone in that search or need. There is a true impact of isolation that can come after moving up North. The adjustment from military structure and control to civilian life was difficult, that’s when Lake realized there was a greater need for Cannabis beyond her own.

“We have vets that come in lifeless, with “I knew I had to do something. his tantalizing strain blends the best of two classic strains in a tropical and fruity Sativa that has become legend amongst connoisseurs and animal lovers alike. A 70-30 Sativa dominant cross of Kali Snapple and Oregon Huckleberry bred by Dynasty Genetics, this 9-10 week flowering strain is as beautiful as it is tasty. The thick boulder shaped buds are liberally coated in trichomes and sparkle with purple tones that tease with massive bag appeal, begging the be snapped open and smoked. While the flower looks fluffy it has a solid density that is satisfyingly thick, with a crisp snap when breaking the bud down. Cured well and hand trimmed, the flower has a light stickiness that carries the warm, heavenly scent of tropical weed goodness that lingers long after the bottle is closed. Easily one of the best smelling and tasting flowers we have reviewed in Alaska, popping thee container releases a heady fruit-forward burst of warm and sweet fruits. The sweetness is balanced by a sugary earthiness with hints of gas, pine and pineapple-berry, with a complex combination of flavors that makes it easy to sit and smell the flower for a few minutes alone. Loading up a bowl, we were excited to taste the tropical fuel in smoke, and what a treat it was. The first hit is like inhaling a big hit of island paradise, with visions of sliced fruit and sunshine dancing in the mind as the layered tones coat the palate in a sugary and clean flavor. The smoke is exceptionally smooth and light on the lungs, with a light expansion and a focus on flavor that delivers hit after hit. Effects begin quickly on the exhale, rushing first to the mind and then crashing into the body in waves of Sativa pleasure that blend relaxation and energy in a way only Cannabis can. A euphoric and uplifting high, the mind feels warmed by the terpenes and THC, releasing a high that has several hours of lasting power and can only be described as a mood elevator. Great for daytime or an end of the day pick-me-up, the Moose & Lobsta is a treat that will brighten up a chilly fall day. The best part about the strain is that cuts are available as clones at the store, meaning aspiring home growers can pick up a clone of this frosty purple deliciousness and give it a try for themselves. Stop by their shop and try some of the Moose and Lobsta, and check out the alaskan leaf other great strains being grown 1211 W 36th Ave. at this friendly and passionAnchorage driven dispensary.

BORING HEMP COMPANY 36/oct. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Boring Hemp Company is a family farm, run by a trio of brothers and their father. Together, they’ve been farming at the Boring property since the early 80s. In 2015, when Oregon created legislation to support hemp producer licenses, the family decided to apply. Boring Hemp Company’s second property, located only a few minutes away from the family’s multi-generational land, is found next to a school. One can almost envision teachers leading students out into the field to teach about our world’s most versatile plant. Boring Hemp Company farms organically with inputs limited to dry amendments and clean well water from the property. The farm continually works to find the most efficient growing, harvesting and processing methods as well as to educate fellow farmers and provide seed for those looking to farm the plant.

AMERICAN HEMPSEED GENETICS American Hemp Seed Genetics was founded by Jerry Norton, a prominent individual in Oregon’s hemp scene for the last several years. He’s been farming hemp in Oregon since 2014 and played a substantial role in the passage of SB 1015, which allows hemp farmers to have material processed by Oregon Liquor Control Cannabis (OLCC) licensed extraction companies. He has also been the driving force behind the PDX Hempfest events in Portland. Products crafted by American Hemp Seed Genetics include CBD and terpene infused vape cartridges, CBD honey sticks, whole plant extract and more. The farms we visited were located in the Silverton Hills area, though Norton has multiple farming operations across Northern Oregon.

CBD RESEARCH COMPANY Plants for days

CBD Research Company boasts an impressive span of around 18,000 hemp plants on its substantial 10-acre property in Molalla. All the plants are from seed and a handful of different genetics are run, including Cannatonic from Oregon CBD Seeds, an Early Therapy cross also from Oregon CBD Seeds and an inhouse F1 Charlotte’s Web cross. CBD Research Company practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for its hemp crops which prevents spraying harmful chemicals or pesticides to keep the plants clean and pest-free. The dedication to this practice is rigorous and extends the plant’s entire life cycle, including the vegetative stage. The research includes the development of phytocannabinoid medicines, plant botany and tissue culture research. The team hopes to support hemp farmers with better resources and more readily available knowledge to cultivate healthy organic plants rich with medicinal benefits.

ALASKA LEAF

LEARN ABOUT HEMP This month, our Oregon team decided to dive in and explore the vast world of hemp for our first ever Hemp Issue of Alaska Leaf. Oregon began granting hemp farming permits in 2014 and is now up to more than 3,400 acres of hemp state wide. It is our hope that with this issue, and with each issue annually hereafter, we can inspire individuals to cultivate, process and innovate with this amazing plant we’ve been so blessed to know. From food to fuel to clothing to building materials, to medicine to bioremediation, the hemp plant provides it all, making it the most diverse and usable plant mankind has available. The famed Jack Herer once wrote “I don’t know if hemp is going to save the world, but it’s the only thing that can.”

We wholeheartedly agree.

MARIJUANA MANIFESTO How Lies, Corruption, and Propaganda Kept Cannabis Illegal By JESSE VENTURA, 2017, 292 PAGES, $16.99

J

esse Ventura always gets a lot of attention and he has ever since his days as a professional wrestler. That attention, both positive and negative, only intensified when he became the Governor of Minnesota. One major reason is he tends to be a no-bullshit, straight-shooting guy. That level of candor may not be unusual for a wrestler, but it’s damned unusual for a politician. And refreshing as hell. After Washington state voters approved a weakened, no-home-grow marijuana law, Ventura rightly called out the tepidity of I-502. And his long tradition of speaking truth continues — delightfully so — in this new tome. More than ever before, the USA needs full, real legalization of both medical and recreational Cannabis and hemp. Seemingly every week goes by bringing exciting new revelations about the healthful properties of marijuana. The medicinal plant is in abundant supply, but legalization finds stiff resistance from a government corrupted by Big Pharma money and campaign cash from law enforcement and corrections industries. Ventura offers his always-interesting takes on why the government patented CBD, and how Big Pharma companies are trying for exclusive rights to create marijuana medication, and why the Drug Enforcement Administration simply cannot be trusted. Marijuana Manifesto is a rallying cry to finally end the War On Drugs. Legalizing Cannabis, Ventura notes, will serve to rejuvenate the sluggish economy and help make people healthier and happier.

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, is a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He splits his time between homes in Minnesota and Baja, Mexico.
