Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Glass Issue of Northwest Leaf! My infatuation with glass art and culture began during my first trip to Piece of Mind in Seattle around 2006. Walking through display cases of custom pieces in a time of prohibition was mind blowing. The beautiful colors, styles and technologies fascinated my young stoner mind, and since the Leaf began in 2010, we have published an annual glass issue to honor the culture and love for this unique art form. Perhaps the most important aspect in glass art is the relationship it offers between the user and the plant. Each piece is an expression of personal taste and vibes, while delivering a unique consumption experience. A beloved rig or pipe is like an old friend, trustworthy and comfortable as it delivers sweet sensimillia. The only true functional art in the world, I love sharing the hard work of those who craft borosilicate with flame and kiln. Today, glass culture has blown up into an accepted form of mainstream art that’s rapidly exploding in awareness and value. Custom pieces fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars, get millions of views on social media, and transfix the heady community with continuous displays of art that will get you high just looking at them. There are so many amazing artists in the Northwest and beyond, that selecting pieces to share is both a fun and difficult process. We have some beautiful pieces to share in A BELOVED RIG all four magazines - with OR PIPE IS LIKE different artists in each AN OLD FRIEND, and I hope you take a look TRUSTWORTHY at nwleaf.com to see our AND complete gallery! COMFORTABLE Remember to buy American glass whenever AS IT DELIVERS possible, to support your SWEET favorite local headshop, SENSIMILLIA. and to always smoke from clean glass!

STUDY: DAILY USE OF HIGH POTENCY HERB HEIGHTENS THE RISK FOR PSYCHOSIS A recent study published in The Lancet Psychiatry purports to underline the link between Cannabis use and mental health, providing some detail upon whom is at risk. “Our study shows that daily Cannabis use, especially of high potency Cannabis, is strongly linked to the risk of developing psychosis,” lead author Marta Di Forti of King’s College London wrote. The researchers define this as the risk of developing DEFINED AS DEVELOPING a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia, and having symptoms A PSYCHOTIC DISORDER such as hearing voices and experiencing delusions or paranoia. SUCH AS SCHIZOPHRENIA, AND HAVING SYMPTOMS They studied 901 patients who had their first psychotic episode and SUCH AS HEARING VOICES a further 1,237 patients who had never had such an episode. The risk of psychosis, to keep things in perspective, is just one in 20,000 as a result of Cannabis use, notes Ian Hamilton, a University of York mental health and addiction specialist. “I think we have to be careful that we don’t exaggerate the risk,” Hamilton said.

POLICE ARREST WOMAN WHO HANDED OUT EDIBLES ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY

AMERICAN’S SUPPORT FOR CANNABIS LEGALIZATION REACHES NEW HIGH

A Wisconsin woman was arrested after handing out marijuana-infused cookies at a St. Patrick’s Day parade, according to police. Cathleen Krause, 57, was charged with delivering THC, possession of THC, and three counts of possession of a controlled substance, reports WBAY-TV. According to a witness, a woman dressed in a leather coat and green hat gave her a cookie with marijuana in it, according to a Shawano County Sheriff’s Office affidavit. That witness then gave the cookie to deputies. The deputies later tracked down Krause, whom they claimed was “visibly intoxicated” and smelled of alcohol and marijuana, according to the affidavit.

The majority of Americans who say Cannabis should be legal coast to coast keeps growing. Support for legal weed hit 61% in 2018, up from 57% two years earlier, according to the General Social Survey. This trend survey is highly respected, according to the Associated Press. The GSS has been measuring support for legal marijuana since the 1970s. The increased support for legalization holds across all age groups and political parties. The poll, taken in 2018, is the first in which a majority of Republicans expressed support for legal Cannabis at 54% approval, up from 45% in 2016. Among Democrats, an overwhelming 76% now favor legalization. Among age groups, 18-to-34-yearolds express the strongest support for legalization, at almost 75%. But oldsters are coming aboard, too. 46% of those 65 and older say Cannabis should be legal, up from 42% two years ago. Most Americans now live in places where marijuana is legal either recreationally or medically. Ten 18-TO-34-YEARstates allow adult OLDS EXPRESS recreational use, with THE STRONGEST at least 30 states now SUPPORT FOR allowing medical use. LEGALIZATION, Meanwhile, the AT ALMOST 75%. laggardly federal government still officially classifies Cannabis as a Schedule I drug, as dangerous as heroin and more dangerous than Schedule II methamphetamine or cocaine. “Our time has come,” said Justin Strekal, political director of NORML. “Never in modern history has there existed greater public support for ending the nation’s nearly century-long experiment with marijuana prohibition.”

JUSTICE

nwleAF.COM

ARIZONA SUPREME COURT WEIGHS EXACTLY WHAT IS MEDICAL CANNABIS? The Arizona Supreme Court held oral arguments on March 19th to clarify exactly what is considered medical marijuana in the state. The case, State v. Rodney Jones, stems from a 2013 arrest in Yavapai County. Jones, a medical marijuana cardholder, was charged with a crime for possessing hashish. An appeals court later ruled that medical marijuana only applies to the dried leaves and flowers of the Cannabis plant, not extracted resin and oils from the plant, including hash. These extracts are in Cannabis edibles and other products used by patients who can’t smoke marijuana, or chose not to. A ruling is expected from the court in about three months.

OREGON

NEW BALLOT INITIATIVE WOULD PROTECT INDOOR AND OFF-THE-JOB CANNABIS CONSUMPTION Three Cannabis industry leaders in Oregon filed a ballot initiative on March 18th which would alter state laws to allow indoor Cannabis consumption, and to protect workers who consume weed during their off time. The initiative is titled the “Legalization Justice Act of 2020.” It directs the state to petition the federal government to allow for the sale of marijuana across state lines (Oregon Cannabis farmers would certainly love to see THAT), and to redistribute more Cannabis tax dollars to minority communities “disproportionately affected by the failed War on Drugs.” The initiative’s backers — Leia Flynn, Madeline Martinez and Angela Bacca — refer to themselves as the “Oregon Justice League” in initiative documents. Twenty-five percent of Cannabis tax dollars, under the act, would go toward funding and promoting small, minorityowned businesses and to creating micro-lending initiatives. Another 25% would subsidize low-income medical Cannabis patients who don’t have access to growers. The remaining 50% would “continue to be used at the state’s discretion.” Initiative’s backers propose removing “the discriminatory provision under the Oregon Indoor Clean Act so that Cannabis users can inhale inside.” This provision would allow the operation of Cannabis cafes. The backers also suggest that patients with incurable or chronic illnesses be issued lifetime medical Cannabis patient cards through the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program, and for organ recipients to not be removed from the United Network for Organ Sharing lists for holding a medical card or testing positive for Cannabis. For Oregon employees, the act would “create employment protections under the law to protect off-the-job Cannabis use and prevent discriminatory and conceptually flawed drug testing.”

WASHINGTON

PARENTS COULD PROVIDE CHILDREN CANNABIS EXTRACTS AT SCHOOL UNDER PROPOSED LEGISLATION Public schools in Washington state would be required to plan for parents asking that their children be given Cannabis to treat illnesses during the school day, under a bill alive in the Legislature. The bill was introduced this session for the third time by state Rep. Brian Blake (D-Aberdeen). He said he wanted to address concerns raised by a constituent whose daughter has to leave class to take a supplement to help quell seizures. The law is limited to smokeless forms of Cannabis, and would require the child to be enrolled in a state database of approved users of medical marijuana, requiring physician approval. “We want to give the school system, the K-12 system, some comfort because they said they were stuck between a rock and a hard place,” said Rep. Blake, whose bill passed the House of Representatives on a 7719 vote March 19.

OPINION

In other words, as a retail store, your company could be held liable for any products you sell. You may want to consider business liability insurance for this issue. Second, and importantly, you have to be careful of undue influence. WAC 314-55-018(1) states “No industry member or licensee shall enter into any agreement which causes undue influence over another licensee or industry member.” This means that although the glass store is not licensed, you must remember your Cannabis retail store is. If the WSLCB finds that the Cannabis retail entity is exerting “undue influence” over the glass store, the Cannabis retail store could face an administrative penalty. So be careful on how much you use the glass store for the retail store’s benefit, and how independently you operate both companies.

With stifling rules and regulations preventing Cannabis retailers from selling t-shirts and hemp products, glass stores have become a safe place for Cannabis retailers to continue Cannabis advocacy. BY BONNIE FONG FOR NORTHWEST LEAF

ongrats on thinking about opening a new business. That can be an exciting, yet scary, endeavor. Opening a glass store next to a Cannabis retail store has become quite common over recent years. This is largely due to a Cannabis retail licensee’s inability to sell products that are unrelated to Cannabis. WAC 314-55-079(1) states “A marijuana retailer license allows the licensee to sell only useable marijuana, marijuana concentrates, marijuana-infused products, marijuana paraphernalia, and lockable boxes to store marijuana…” This means that a Cannabis retailer cannot sell common items requested by customers such as t-shirts, artwork, books and literature, hemp products, CBD products, Cannabis cooking supplies such as cheese cloth, etc. Indeed, the very Cannabis license itself restricts a retailer’s ability to be a full-service Cannabis source for knowledge seeking customers. Thus, opening a glass store next to or near a Cannabis retail store is a good solution for a retailer who wishes to supply customers an option for purchasing Cannabis adjacent items. Additionally, the glass store is not licensed by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB), and therefore is not subject to Cannabis administrative rules such as advertising restrictions. There are a few issues you should consider when opening and operating your glass store. First, although you are permitted to sell endless products, you should consider the product’s liability of the products you choose to sell.

While Cannabis retailers cannot sell hemp bags, lotions, or paper, or CBD topicals and lozenges commonly found in grocery stores or corner stores, glass shops allow retailers to still provide these products to consumers nearby. And this is all due to one silly administrative regulation: WAC 314-55-079(1), which states “A marijuana retailer license allows the licensee to sell only useable marijuana, marijuana concentrates, marijuana-infused products, marijuana paraphernalia, and lockable boxes to store marijuana…” But why? Why can’t I buy a hemp bag with Laws are theoretically my Cannabis? I can buy a candy bar with supposed to be a six-pack of beer. I can buy tampons with supported by sound a pack of cigarettes. Why are we making public policy. people go out of their way to buy Cannabis? It took decades for Washington to allow the sale of liquor in grocery stores. Thanks to major financial contributions from Costco, Washingtonians are now able to buy vodka with their groceries. But before 2012, we had to slum it out to liquor stores in order to buy a bottle of whiskey from a state-controlled liquor store. I often fantasize about having the ability to buy a pack of joints in between buying chicken for dinner and toilet paper for the bathroom, at a single grocery store. I find it wholly unreasonable that I have to make a special trip to a Cannabis retail store, just to prepare for a nice and relaxed evening. And for those of us with kids, we are not allowed to bring our children into the Cannabis retail stores. Indeed, I have seen parents leave their children outside the front door in a stroller while the parents run in to buy Cannabis. Why are we burdening Washingtonians with unnecessary regulations? In comparing tobacco and liquor regulations with Cannabis regulations, I can only come to one conclusion: Money. Both the alcohol and tobacco industries are heavily funded to ensure people have open access to nicotine and alcohol. Laws are theoretically supposed to be supported by sound public policy. We are supposed to have logical reasons or justifications for our laws and regulations. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, and even seven years into legalization I can buy a half gallon of vodka with a carton of cigarettes, but I cannot buy a bottle of water with my edibles. Great.

BUDTENDER OF THE MONTH

When did Cannabis first come into your life? The first connection I had with the plant was when I was in an Oregon corn maze at eight years old, and I could smell it. I asked my Mom and she said, “You don’t need to know what that is.” But my brother finally told me it was weed. I’ve always been curious about that smell since that day, and eventually I tried it with my sister and her friends at 12 y/o. We all lied to our parents, saying we were going fishing. We went down to this pond and tried to fish and smoked. We didn’t really feel it at first, and then we smoked again and were lit as fuck. So we rode our bikes to the beach and had a great time! Ever since then I’ve always partaken, and since high school it has become a daily thing. How did you become a budtender? My roommate and best friend Kassandra worked at a store. She connected me to a friend named Cass Stewart, who hit me up and asked me if I wanted a job. The first store I worked at was very busy and I had to learn the products and gain experience, but it’s really easy if you just listen - especially to other budtenders!

What is your favorite part of the job? My favorite part is helping people who are suffering in any sort of way. From something minor like a sleep aid, to getting off opiates, surgeries, or people with cancer. My friend’s mom has Parkinson’s and it makes her stop shaking, which is amazing. I personally use Cannabis medicinally for PTSD, Bipolar Disorder and Crohn’s. I look up strains for those purposes. It helps me a lot. I also really like getting people high because it makes them happy, and I want to help them be happy. And it’s safer than alcohol. I’d rather people enjoy themselves getting high, rather than getting wasted and making bad decisions. I love budtending because I can be myself and show my personality, rather than being a robot at every other customer service job. Being myself really opens up the customer and it builds a bond between us that allows them to trust us - and keep coming back for the same type of positive experience.

What’s your favorite way to use cannabis? I am a flower child and grew up with the flower, and I learned how to grow myself. Smoking flower is one of the only parts that helps my stomach condition, but I also eat edibles, vape, dab, smoke prerolls, use topicals, tinctures and basically everything you can think of. It’s especially important because we are trying to teach the consumer each day. It’s our job to try everything, so we’re giving customers the best info we can for their decision. favorite strains and cannabis producers? My favorite flower brands are Gabriel, Gold Leaf, and Fifty Fold - they just came out with some new indica strains and some really dank buds that remind me of when I used to grow. Other brands include Oleum, Dank Czar, and pretty much all the good stuff. Inflorescence has a Frosted Lemon Cake that when you open it, it smells like a lemon pound cake. It’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever smelled in Cannabis. Why do you like working at mary’s? I chose Mary’s because it was close by to where I used to work. And it’s silly, but I really like the purple building because every other building is green. While I can work in any dispensary I want to - not based on ego but experience - when I went into Mary’s it was so open and inviting, and I really liked it. The counters were accessible to let customers make easy choices. It’s the most relaxed store I’ve ever worked at. What are your hobbies when you aren’t working at the dispensary? One of my favorite things to do, because I can’t really travel yet, is hiking and disconnecting completely from technology - while connecting with the universe. Get off your phone! The best place to smoke weed is outside. If you get really stoned and pause and look around and breathe, you will feel the energy of what’s all around you. That’s what I love most about weed - it makes you present, and that can be one of the most peaceful things you can go through. It makes me appreciate Cannabis a lot. And I love to go out to the dance scene and support local music. Dance therapy is one of the best therapies you can have as well.

A MEDICAL CANNABIS GROWER AND PROCESSOR FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS

“IHAVEANUANCEDUNDERSTANDINGOFWHAT IWANTTHEPRODUCTSTOLOOK,SMELLAND SMOKELIKEBECAUSEILIKEPOTSOMUCH.” Ryan Abernathy is the CEO and President of Xtracted Laboratories, a heritage medical

Cannabis company that helped shape the concentrate marketplace in Washington. The company includes the brands Refine and Northwest Concentrates, and is known around the country for their Loud Resin concentrates. Abernathy is a passionate Cannabis consumer who has been growing and making hash for over 20 years, and his passion drives the innovation and quality produced by the company. With the brand now expanded to Alaska and Maine, we sat down to talk about why he loves making hash around the country, and what Xtracted stands for as a brand. INTERVIEW BY WES ABNEY @BEARDEDLORAX

How did you get into the Cannabis business? Cannabis came into my life actually very early on. I have older brothers, and on New Years Eve 1985 my oldest one sequestered me and shared my first experience with Cannabis. Not surprisingly, it was a beautifully greasy Nepalese hash. The first time I got high was smoking a big old bowl of hash. I was 11. That story used to go over well in medical, but it’s a little more awkward now in the regulated market. I loved it from the beginning, and it immediately became a part of my life. What inspired you to start working with medical Cannabis? I actually got into medical and got authorized in 2004. There were really only a handful of clubs and access points back then, and getting an authorization was a challenge. So, it was like a badge to have gone through the effort and work to be a part of the community. It was sad how hard it was for the sick and dying patients, so as an able-bodied human being using Cannabis for pain, I really embraced it from the beginning medical days - and tried to participate in the community as a contributor. I grew MMJ from 2004-09 under the rules, while working as a sales rep in the action sports industry selling skateboard and snowboard products. In 2009, I saw that Cannabis was heading towards retail and left the action sports world and started in MMJ, full-time. How did you decide to start extracting and create Refined? I’ve always been into concentrates, and that built for me over the years of being a grower and having access to all that raw material. When weed was illegal, making concentrates was even more challenging. I fell in love with making six start and rosin in my garage, and consuming them for myself. In 2009, I switched to producing only concentrates

and hung up my growers hat. I realized there were a lot of expert growers, and rather than try to compete, I decided to be a specialist in what I love. In 2012, when I met my original partners Jim and Brent, we got together and recognized the need for professional equipment and a facility that worked with the city to become a regulated business. We started out with $75,000 and take a lot of pride that there are no outside investors and that it’s been successful enough to finance a recreational company that is in the top 20 for sales. I bought out my original partners and have reinvested only our profit, so it’s literally weed money from start to finish and it’s thrilling. I make products that I cater to for myself and take pride in. how does it feel to be a Cannabis-using cannabusiness owner? I think the reason our products stand out is due to the close relationship to the plant. I have a nuanced understanding of what I want the products to look, smell and smoke like because I like pot so much. When I travel as a speaker to conventions around the country and sit on panels, I can tell I’m the only one that really love Cannabis. If there was no money involved it would still be in my life. I think that’s what makes our product line stand out, especially in this regulated world. What is your favorite strain and way to consume? I obviously love to dab! That’s been my thing since it came into the picture. To be honest, a big reason I recognized the niche existed was in 2007, when I recognized that I hadn’t smoked flower for a week or two. And I’m an ounce of flower a week guy, and all of a sudden the lightbulb went off in my head. I knew if concentrates were as awesome to me, then people were going to love them. While I can’t say that I have a favorite strain, I love gas - that fuelly profile.

How do you handle consumption for you & your employees? Being a regulated Cannabis business, there’s no consumption onsite, so that was an adjustment to get used to. We have a standard drug policy in place, but it’s a don’t ask dont tell, so please don’t come back stoned off your face at work. Some people understand what being a productive stoner is and some don’t. I’m a very functioning stoner who wakes up with two to four dabs and can continue through the day. But in this environment, that’s not possible so I’ve gotten used to not being high during the day. What is your favorite part of being a legal processor? I would say sleeping well at night. I never wanted to be a criminal, but was driven to through a righteous plant being illegal. I take a lot of pride in having a business and employees and being a contributing member of society. We’ve been making payroll since 2012, and being able to offer insurance and paid vacation and sick days - I love it. One thing different between me and some of my stoner owner friends is that I love [the legal market]. Obviously, taxes and rules could be better, but I love that we get to do this. What are your goals as you spread the company into new states? Staying true to who we are as a company, and true to our roots while offering products that reflect that. As a company, I want to spread our products to as many places as possible. I’m looking at the long play and don’t believe the state and federal rules will remain long, so I’m trying to create multi-state distribution centers in the future and having partners in Alaska and Maine is a launching point. I love my partners and am working with them because they love weed like I do. Having partners who love Cannabis, and can grade products and ensure the repeatable experience is the most important part.

A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Look for the Stoner Owner stamp when purchasing fine Cannabis, and let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

T

he inventor of ‘Gonzo’ journalism (which placed the journalist inside, often as a participant of the subject matter they were covering) was a figure who could have only risen to prominence inside the revolutionary and turbulent late 1960s. Of course, most of us in the modern world view Thompson through the lens of the cult classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, starring Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro. While the film opens with the line that they were drifting through Las Vegas in “a car full of marijuana and a head full of acid,” and the movie displays the two friends as doing a lot of different drugs, surprisingly little Cannabis is consumed. Truth is, Cannabis was one of Thompson’s favorite methods for altering consciousness. The writer once described Cannabis as “a source of joy and comfort for many years. And I still think of it as a basic staple of life, along with beer and ice and grapefruits — and millions of Americans agree with me.” And that’s how Thompson apparently lived his life, too. According to Keith Stroup, founder of NORML, Hunter smoked Cannabis everywhere. Stroup met Thompson under the bleachers at the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami where the author was smoking a joint, trying to be discreet but failing miserably. Stroup went under the bleachers when he recognized Thompson, and the two shared a joint together - right there in the convention hall. In an HBO documentary titled Rolling Stone: Stories from the Edge, one can see how far Thompson was willing to go for his beliefs on Cannabis. Recounted by Rolling Stone writer William Greider - who was in the room when an interview between Thompson and then presidential candidate Bill Clinton occurred - “Clinton wanted that interview to make it very clear he was not your standard brand liberal who was for smoking dope.” This hard stance on this harmless plant made Thompson angry, and Grieder described Thompson leaving the interview early, only to came back with a cocktail in hand. For the rest of the interview, Thompson sat sullenly in the corner through the rest of the junket. Years later in an interview, Thompson referred to Clinton as a “poison scumbag” and “a man

without honor or loyalty who would gladly go on a double date with the reverend Jimmy Swaggart.” He wasn’t a man to mince words. Since his passing in 2005, Thompson has continued to be idolized by the modern counterculture. Someday soon, we may also get to try the Cannabis he consumed toward the end of his life. His wife Anita is planning to begin selling the Cannabis chemovars that Thompson was smoking in 2005, just prior to his suicide. Though details are murky, Anita plans on cloning the stash that he left behind. She’s also recently donated his 1973 candy apple red Chevy Caprice to the

“Cannabition” attraction in Las Vegas, saying “I continue Hunter’s work by bringing awareness of marijuana laws that target minorities and destroy families all over this country for possession of this plant. The ‘Red Shark’ is a symbol of our journey together as active citizens to stop putting responsible smokers in jail. Cannabition is also doing this work in a way that is fun and informative for guests.” While Thompson passed away some 14 years ago, his writing and spirit is very much alive, though many of us (this author included) wish that he was still alive to pick apart today’s predicaments with his searing wit.

THOMPSON ONCE DESCRIBED CANNABIS AS “A SOURCE OF JOY AND COMFORT FOR MANY YEARS. AND I STILL THINK OF IT AS A BASIC STAPLE OF LIFE, ALONG WITH BEER AND ICE AND GRAPEFRUITS — AND MILLIONS OF AMERICANS AGREE WITH ME.”

Lemon Cherry GASSWORKSGARDEN

“FULL OF LEMONY EARTHY TANG, THE EXHALE LEAVES A HINT OF CHERRY ON THE PALATE AS THE EFFECTS RUSH INTO THE MIND AND BODY.”

P

ERFECT FOR STONEY SPRING DAYS, this Lemon Cherry delivers the sweet and refreshing taste of a cherry limeade, featuring a time-warping hybrid high that melts away hours in heady bliss. Promoted as Cherry Pie with a twist, this Lemon Cherry is a stunning example of quality craft Cannabis. Unique to Gassworks Garden, the strain has roots from Cherry Pie, Lemon G, and a twist of OG that combine to make a 10 week cut that acts like a Sativa, but hits hard with Indica vibes. Opening a jar reveals sour earthy notes, dominated by a sugary-lemon-drop-fizz and a floral cherry spice on the finish that begs to be smoked. The smell oozes out of the buds in a drippy, thick aromatic presence that teases at the intoxicating effects to come. Each bud is perfectly trimmed and densely covered in individual trichomes that add up to a frosty coating, only broken up by the occasional red hair. Light green and beautiful, snapping into a nug reveals a dense structure with a lot of stickiness, which makes the quality cure even more impressive. Ripping into a bowl delivers a gentle smoke that is light in expansion and full of flavor. The natural growing methods preserve the strain attributes perfectly, creating a smoking experience that emphasizes taste without adulterants. Full of lemony earthy tang, the exhale leaves a hint of cherry on the palate as the effects rush into the mind and body. Within minutes, the mind is warping into slow down mode. Stress, anxiety and almost all thoughts entirely leave the mind, imparting a smiley euphoria that puts you right in the moment. While the mind is off drooling the body slowly relaxes - and after the first heavy rush of Cannabinoids - the overall high settles into a place where everything feels happy. Perfect for sitting and staring into the sunset, or getting out and active, you can do it all or not at all with the Lemon Cherry. It’s hard to call this flower either a Sativa or Indica, because it pulls attributes of both in the best way, so we give it a stoney-happy-hybrid classification based on our experience. Gassworks Garden is a primarily soil to oil farm that does extremely limited drops of craft flower every harvest. A true labor of love, the garden is owned and operated by Michael Klein, who lives above his licensed garden and puts his own hands on each plant daily. We have a lot of respect for this stoner owner, and recommend you try the delicious flower and concentrates that come from his craft, pesticide-tested garden!

THE GLASS ISSUE How did Cannabis come into your life? I was a late bloomer to smoking. Ok, not

@GIRLGLASS GLASSBYSABINA.COM

sabina boehm

that late - I was about 17 years old. But it felt late compared to a lot of my friends. Growing up in Miami, that nice, green, seed-free weed was few and far between. When I moved to Seattle in ‘92, I quickly learned what I had been missing. What many people don’t know about me, and I still to this day feel a little cagy talking about, is that I was heavily involved in the black market in the mid 90s. Small-time for a while, and then at some point I met a woman importer who really just wanted to mostly work with other women. Smart move actually. It was really interesting being a woman in the industry at that time. Cops would always overlook you in a room. Everyone would always assume you were the girlfriend of the drug dealer and not actually the drug dealer. And because of that I think I slipped through a lot of cracks and got away with more than I should have.

You were a pioneer in medical Cannabis in Washington. What did your time working with patients teach you? I really enjoyed working with patients. I was the

general manager and buyer for Dockside Co-Op in Fremont for four years. My very favorite thing was when a little old lady would come into the co-op so pessimistic and embarrassed to be there - didn’t want any pamphlets or anything that anyone could find at her house - and then would come back a week later without her walker feeling on top of the world. Trying to convince us how well it worked! We also helped run the ‘leaf of hope’ program, which was a program where local producers would donate THC and CBD oil to help kids with epilepsy and Drevets syndromes. It was amazing to watch the effect that had on so many lives. It was a beautiful thing.

HOLDING ONE OF HER STUNNING BUTTERFLY MARBLES. PHOTO BY JOHN CORNICELLO

When did you start blowing glass? I started lamp-workng in 1994.

The old-fashion way - I took an apprenticeship and started making pipes.

Now there are so many colors and color companies it’s glorious! Fuming is being pushed to new levels, as well as color tubing and coloring techniques. APR. 2019

Was it rebellious to create pipes when you started? Not more than anything else I was doing at the time. But when ‘operation pipe dreams’ hit, we all got spooked. I mostly stopped making pipes and switched mainly to marbles and art. Let me tell you how much harder it is to sell fancy wine glasses than it is to sell fancy pipes! But I loved the work so I persevered, really finding a niche market in marbles. Less than being rebellious, it was really novel to be a pipe maker in the 90s. Tho people usually looked past me to ask the nearest guy standing next to me if he had made the pipes on display.

has working with glass changed since when you began over 20 years ago? In so many ways! Starting with the materials, there was only one color company at the time - Northstar - and they only had a couple dozen colors. And if we’re being honest, most of them were challenging at best. Fuming was just being developed by Bob Snodgrass. Techniques for water pipes were in the renaissance. No one had any idea of dabbing! You had to beg and plead and ultimately had to throw money at anyone you wanted to teach you anything. The art was new and everyone was very closed lipped. Now there are so many colors and color companies it’s glorious! Fuming is being pushed to new levels, as well as color tubing and coloring techniques. And the internet is lending itself to a really nice channel for open communication to help the next generation of glassblowers. Though I don’t think they can claim being ‘self-taught’ the way we could.

What inspires you to create new art? My inspiration comes from all

sides I think. I like art to touch my life in as many ways as possible. When I bake a pie, I love to spend an hour ornately designing the crust. I can get lost in glass to the point where it’s dark outside and I have no idea where the day went. In the last few years I’ve been creating some glass costumes, the last of which I took to a glass fashion show in Murano, Italy. Amazing! Talk about inspiring! But I think inspiration comes from the life you live and the things around you. Nature. A fleeting thought. A mistake you decide to go with. I’m blessed with having great friends and a supportive family.

How does being a woman in a male-dominated industry feel? Though I have an amazing male community of colleague, it is hard being a woman in this boys club. And it’s not that there aren’t strong women in the industry - it’s just a completely male dominated field, much like Cannabis. I am lucky because I do feel like I get great respect from most of my peers, but overall I believe it’s really hard to find acclaim being a woman in glass. I know for a fact my glass would sell for more if I were a dude, and that sucks! There are some amazingly talented women who started back in the day, that make killer work, and aren’t able to sell it at those rockstar prices - even though they are in their own right, total rockstars.

What would you like to see change in the glass community?

What do you love most about creating glass art? I love how feminine

glass is. Glass is therapy for me. It’s meditative and makes me mindful in a way that nothing else does. I love making a hard, cold, fragile material soft and pliable. I love that it’s dangerously hot and demands respect. Glass has a mind if it’s own. I tell my students that it’s great to have a plan, but important to stay flexible.

Royal understands that the strength of the community is extremely important, since he came directly from this community. At a young age of around 18, Royal was introduced to his love of glass after picking up a pipe made by Lyle (@Lyloglass) at the Okanogan Family Faire in North East Washington. As Royal recounts, “I was blown away by how cool it was. It had fume and all kinds of crazy stuff I hadn’t seen in glass pipes before.” From this moment on, Royal has been deeply involved with the glass community, from black market Cannabis days through medical, and on to the recreational market we currently live in. For the most part, if we are all working to progress the glass pipe culture, it’s fun to shout one another out and collaborate - which will help everybody grow together.

Who taught you to blow glass or inspired your fume work? Lyle definite-

ly showed me the ropes. We had an agreement where I paid him $2,000 and I got a year worth of time in the studio hanging out and learning. He showed me the basics on how to make a spoon and how to do a reversal, where you switch your axis to get the spirals on both sides, as well as many other processes. By 2002, I think I had my own shop - it was in this weird house I was living at, but back then they were all weird, backdoor style, garage, shitty shops.

What torch did you first buy? I happened to have the money at the time, so I bought a Herbert Arnold after about four months of blowing glass. I was like, “Well shit, I have the money now. I might as well invest into this now because I don’t know if I’ll have the money in the future, being just a struggling kid. How have the online and social media sales platforms for glassblowers evolved since you started back in 2000? I started out on the internet

earlier than most people I think, just because I saw that was the future. Back before tokecity.com in about 2000 or 2001, there was a website called overgrow.com that was crazy growers from all over the world, and made up this Cannabis community. There really weren’t many glass blowers on there, only a couple. So that generated more traffic, even though it was way more sketchy to be on the internet back then. Then Toke City came along and that made glass pipes way more mainstream. Once Facebook/Myspace came on, TokeCity kind of fizzled out. Now Instagram is the dominant platform. Everybody is waiting for what’s next.

Are you working on any non-functional glass art? I am gonna try and come out with a drinkware style design. Just like nice glasses and shapes that I have ideas for in my head - stuff I haven’t seen done with drinkware. If you could pick one artist to collaborate with, who would it be? I’d probably pick Banjo. If I could work with him I’d be super stoked! A fumed devi? That would be gorgeous! There are a ton of people I want to work with but he is probably the one I’ve always wanted to, just because I’ve watched him grow as an artist all these years. It’s a really close community and it was cool seeing people grow from Toke City to Glass Pipes to Facebook to Instagram as they evolved and blew glass. For the most part, if we are all working to progress the glass pipe culture, it’s fun to shout one another out and collaborate - which will help everybody grow together. Do you have a favorite fume artist? I respect anyone that actually works

Any tips for an up and coming fume artist? Yeah, it’s all practice - you

just have to get in there every day and put in the hours. Do certain things over and over. When I started fumicellos, I was throwing away almost every one. Granted, when you’re learning they all look cool though, you know? People love the semi-cool ones that I would throw away now. Back then they were awesome after spending all those hours.

with fume on a daily basis and tries to get the best colors they can. It’s a hard thing to do; you’re not just playing with red color or something, you’re literally spraying vapors of metal onto clear glass and trying to get these rainbow colors. It can be very frustrating, especially if you’re trying to get those really nice colors. So I respect anyone that’s doing it on a daily basis, and trying to get the best colors out of fume that they can.

Celebrating 4/20

by laurie wolf Photos By Bruce wolf

APRIL HAS A LOT GOING FOR IT. Getting its name from the Greek word aperit, which means to open, April is the month when we begin to see the first signs of Spring. Trees are in bud, daffodils are poking through the earth, and it’s 4/20. For the Wolf cartel, April is about 4/20 - the celebration of all things Cannabis. Cannabis seedlings are in the ground, Cannabis cookies are in cookie jars, and I begin to infuse a ton of treats for our yearly Laurie and MaryJane company celebration (including a medicated paella!) This month’s recipes couldn’t be easier. Not crazy potent, as less is more when it comes to eating infused food. And we want all of our peeps to be mindful that overdoing it, although not overly dangerous, definitely sucks. Happy 4/20 from Laurie and MaryJane! #Don’tFearTheEdible

62 DIP OR DRIZZLE POT CANDY STICKS

15 skewers

3 cups assorted candy and dried fruit you can impale on a skewer 1 1 1 1

CREAM CHEESE DESSERT DIP

Serves 9

nwLEAF.COM

16 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/3 cup sugar ¼ cup ricotta 2-3 tablespoons canna-butter, melted 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ cup chocolate chips ¼ cup strawberries or raspberries, chopped About 30 assorted cookies 1. In the bowl of an electric mixer combine the cream cheese, sugar, ricotta and the canna-butter. Beat until fluffy. Add the vanilla, chips and berries, mixing until combined. 2. Place the cream cheese mixture in a serving bowl and surround with your favorite cookies. Cookies are more fun to dip than celery.

This cheese dip is sweet. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but most are savory. This is a celebratory cheese concoction of sorts! Cream cheese and ricotta whipped with berries and chocolate chips. And change it up if you want, there is no wrong move here. Add nuts or sprinkles - it’s all good.

cup dark chocolate wafers tablespoon canna-butter or coconut oil cup white chocolate wafers tablespoon canna-butter or coconut oil

1. Place 15 skewers on your work table. Lay out all the candy. Thread the candy on the skewers in any order you like. Remember that you will be drizzling or dipping the skewers in chocolate, keep that in mind when you make your choices. 2. Melt the chocolates either over a double boiler or in the microwave. Using a double boiler, allow the water in the pot to simmer and not touch the bowl with the melting chocolate and cannabutter. Stir constantly.

POT PUDDING PIES

30 shells (2/person)

2 pkgs phyllo mini shells, lightly toasted and cooled 2 cups chocolate pudding, cook and serve or instant 3 tablespoons canna-butter, melted with espresso 2 teaspoons instant espresso 30 raspberries

3. In a microwave, melt with the cannabutter on 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate, as it may be melted but still holding its shape. White chocolate needs very low heat to melt.

1. Place the toasted shells on your work surface.

Any leftover chocolate can be spread on parchment paper, topped with some toasted nuts and coconut, chilled and eaten.

3. Use a tablespoon measure and generously fill the shells. If you are using instant pudding work fast, though if it starts to settle you can still spoon it in. No need to smooth, the raspberry will press it down a bit.

2. Prepare the chocolate pudding, stirring in the canna-butter/espresso.

Double Mountain Brut IPA paired with Sugarbud’s Pink Champagne To celebrate our March magazine going to print, we busted out the good stuff: Double Mountain Brewing’s Brut IPA and Sugarbud’s Pink Champagne flower. Bred by Ken Estes in California, Pink Champagne is the love child of Grand Daddy Purple and Cherry Pie. With two beloved old and new school heavy-hitters as parents, this herb is definitely not for novice consumers. Despite the hefty lineage, this example was properly flushed and my joint yielded a light and minimally expansive smoke, accented by light berry flavors. The Brut IPA carried aromas of grape that translated nicely to bright, honey-apple-hop notes on the palate. Together, these two are a perfect match for a good time. The effect from the bubbly, champagne-inspired beer is uplifting and inspires socialization, while the potent flowers calm anxiety and relax the body. Anytime you are mixing two substances, one must be extra vigilant concerning the effects. Northwest Leaf strongly recommends conducting pairings with others in a safe and private space, as well as in small quantities.

I think I blacked out...

nwLEAF.COM

Puppy dog breath. Can you define the smell? Because it doesn’t smell like anything else. They are so new and young, but their breath is borderline noxious. Is it the food? An odd combination of a strange bacteria paired with the culture of milk from the mommy? What is it that goes on in that soft and warm potbelly? It’s a tough smell to put your finger on. It’s kinda like a three day old, reheated latte, or a bazaar Middle Eastern hookah. No, maybe it’s a woodsy smell. Like moldy leaves on a warm day, or bark. There it is, it smells like bark. Anyway, these are questions that were manifesting during the transition from a dream state into utter, blatant, brutal consciousness - when my humpty dumpty eggshell head managed to pry open one pasty eye, only to see a dog bowl in close proximity. How did I know it was a dog bowl? It said DOG in bold, judgmental letters. At first, I thought it was a GOD bowl. I think I may have drank from it just before I passed out, because my mouth tasted like puppy dog breath. Or maybe it’s because two pit bull puppies were licking my face, and I’m pretty sure my tongue was hanging out on the linoleum in the kitchen only moments before. Was it because they loved me? Or was it because of the dried pizza sauce? These rolling blackouts are becoming an issue. However, I think I have a talent. It’s kind of like Lieutenant Dan on CSI: NY. By initiating a proper forensic investigation and a professional analysis of the remaining shrapnel in my pockets, it’s very possible to piece together the collage of events until the mystery is pretty much solved. So, does this mean I blacked out? Or did I gray out? I should have greened out.
