Art by Joshua Boulet Northwest artist Joshua Boulet has traveled the world, always with sketchpad in hand. Boulet’s unique artwork never fails to lift our spirits and stand out in stores every December.

Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Holiday Issue of Oregon Leaf!

The holidays can be a tough time for many of us, which is why I love sharing and smoking Cannabis so much! Whether gifting a beautiful jar of locally grown fire flower instead of a soon to be discarded gift card or getting stoned with half the family to facilitate a peaceful holiday dinner – Cannabis is a major helped this time of year. I’ve found that showing up with my gift bags full of edible, dabbable and smokable goodies makes me quite popular with friends and family, and they usually share! So, remember this as we head into Christmas territory— nothing can change the politics of the in-laws, but getting really baked will definitely make them more tolerable. To celebrate the holidaze, we have a packed special issue full of great stories for you to enjoy, starting with our amazing cover art by Joshua Boulet. Follow him on Instagram @JoshuaBoulet. Inside this special issue, we have a holiday gift guide that includes a bunch of great reviews and insight into new products. We also take a look at the potential origins and ties between magical mushrooms and the legend of Santa Claus, in the debut of our very first psychedelic column! Over the coming year, we’ll be exploring psychedelia and are excited to look into the potential of other banned drugs that have medicinal and recreational properties. As always, thanks for picking up and reading the Leaf, and please remember to share it with your friends and family! Happy Holidaze!

Oregon Collecting More Cannabis Taxes Than Expected WITH PLUMMETING prices, oregonians are buying more weed than expected. so much more, in fact, that the state budget has $12.5 million more than state economists predicted a few months ago. The average price of a gram of Cannabis on Oregon’s retail market has dropped from $10 in late 2016 to just above $4 in mid-2018, according to state figures, reports Salem Reporter. Oregon consumers are projected to pay $176 million in state Cannabis taxes during the current budget cycle, which will end in mid-2019. “Since Oregon levies, it’s recreational marijuana tax based on the price of the product, the fact that actual tax collections have exceeded expectations is all the more impressive given the ongoing drop in prices,” state economists wrote in a revenue forecast in November. “For every ounce sold or every edible purchased, Oregon is receiving less tax revenue per item due to the price decline.”

Missouri Goes Medical MISSOURI VOTERS approved medical marijuana at the polls in november. the state is likely to have 192 medical Cannabis dispensaries by 2020, reports Springfield News-Leader. The state’s medicinal Cannabis system was modeled in part on medical marijuana laws in Colorado and Oregon, according to New Approach Missouri spokesman Jack Cardetti. “They were very effective,” he said. Each of Missouri’s eight Congressional districts will be allowed a minimum of 24 dispensaries under Amendment 2. “We don’t want patients having to drive across the state,” Cardetti said. “We want it to be close by.” Local communities are allowed to regulate dispensary locations through existing planning and zoning laws, Cardetti said, covering “time, place and manner.” Local municipalities or counties cannot, however, ban dispensaries, he said.

CANNABIS SALES FINALLY PICKING UP IN CALIFORNIA The Golden State’s adultuse Cannabis market got off to something of a slow start, but recent data suggest that Californians could be overcoming any reticence. Sales totaled about $350 million in the third quarter, according to Matt Karens of Greenwave Advisors, speaking with The Motley Fool. That represents a 24 percent increase from the second quarter. The growth is due in part to an increase of about 10 percent in pot shops, plus higher average sales per shop. Karens said the average monthly sales for recreational shops increased by $50,000 quarter over quarter, to about $300,00 in the third quarter.

Six Oregon Cities Vote to Allow Cannabis Businesses VOTERS IN SIX OREGON cities have lifted or rejected recreational cannabis businesses, according to herald and News. Ontario, Joseph, Klamath Falls, Gates, Sumpter and Clatskanie voted to allow recreational marijuana businesses. For all those except Gates and Sumpter, that meant overturning existing bans on recreational marijuana. The election demonstrates that opposition to Cannabis may be lessening in some rural areas, according to Don Morse, director of the Oregon Cannabis Council. “Places like Klamath Falls have come to accept the fact that Cannabis is a major part of their economy and that banning it is just ridiculous,” Morse said. “So, they’re choosing to accept it and to get the tax benefits that come with it.” BY STEVE ELLIOTT / TOKESIGNALS.COM

ove him or hate him, Elon Musk is a true iconoclast living in our modern world. Cut in the mold of the genius inventors of old like Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton or Thomas Edison – Musk is also an entrepreneur and investor whose inventions have made him a major celebrity in the realms of finance, science politics and environmental causes. But all it took was one hit off a joint on the internet to cause this shining star to plummet back to earth for a bit. That incident took place on Joe Rogan’s “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast in early September. The nearly 3-hour long conversation was a wide-ranging one: moving from Musk’s ideas for inventions to his new infrastructure and tunnel construction company (The Boring Company) to his philosophical views on life. Some of the conversations got very deep, with Musk talking personally about his thinking process and personal philosophies. Despite having all of this deep and terrific content associated with the podcast, it was Musk taking one puff off of a blunt that dominated the headlines. Interest in whether Musk consumes Cannabis or not seemed to peak in August of this year when he tweeted that “Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured.” This statement, of course, caused a stir. Is Elon Musk a closet consumer? Just a short time later, Musk confirmed in an interview with

BUDTENDER OF T HE MONTH

OSCARMARTINEZ First EXPERIENCE WITH CANNABIS? First time for me was at my local skate park in Santa Ana, CA, I was around 14 or 15. I smoked a couple of joints with some locals. It was an unforgettable experience to say the least, especially after shaking off the initial state of being a little too ripped to get back on my skateboard right after consuming.

How long have you been a budtender? What’s your favorite part of THE JOB? I have been a budtender for about four years in Oregon. I’d say my favorite part about being a budtender is being able to help educate people about how to be their own advocate when it comes to choosing what’s right for them. I also try to educate consumers about what companies are out there fighting to keep the industry in good shape.

22

What’s your favorite way to use cannabis? I love to roll it up! That’s truly my favorite way to smoke. I’ve tried it all, from blunt to joint to spliff to corn husks! It doesn’t matter to me as long as it is rolled right. What are your favorite cannabis strains? Favorite effects and terpene profiles? To tell you the truth, I don’t really have a favorite strain. I’m a bit of a leaf hound. I’ll really smoke whatever strain is appealing to my nose at the moment. I’ve really never smoked weed for specific effects. But I do try to find strains that let me down easy. I don’t dig Cannabis that gives me a hangover or that ‘logy’ feeling. I’d say I like haze strains or flower with a citrus nose.

“DON’TSELLOUTTOGREED, STAY COMMITTEDTOYOURETHICSAND HOLDONFORTHEROCKYRIDE.THIS INDUSTRYISNOTFORTHEWEAK.”

INTERVIEW BY MATTHEW MEYERS @MCEARLDABSITY

James Schwartz is a recognizable face in the Oregon weed scene. Schwartz

Stoner Owner is Oregon Leaf’s monthly highlight on individuals who’ve developed their love for Cannabis into a thriving business. We’re profiling those who love and actually consume the plant, giving them real insight into the industry’s roots and culture.

What are some of the biggest evolutions in your relationship with the plant since then? In college, I used Cannabis with alcohol just about every time. I didn’t truly know what effects were attributable to Cannabis and which were alcohol-related. In my junior year, my best friend died and that put me on a downward spiral of alcoholism and binge drinking (even worse than the normal college experience), and other drugs. I eventually dropped out of school. My life hit a bottom I hadn’t experienced before, and I got clean and completely sober. I started going back to school and began using Cannabis apart from alcohol. I realized Cannabis helped with my ADHD, allowed me to focus and help me succeed in my nursing program. I began doing medical missions work and met a dentist from Oregon in 1998. Oregon had just passed medical Cannabis and physician-assisted suicide laws. I moved to Oregon to be a part of progressive healthcare policy and not feel like I was a criminal for using a plant that helped me. Over the 20 years of growing medical Cannabis, I began to fully understand the plant, the therapeutic potential and saw the relief it provided to the patients whom I grew for. I have been on a never-ending path with the plant ever since, and now truly believe it is a wellness drug that we should all ingest in one form or another. This is evident by current literature that suggests many common illnesses and disease processes are likely related to Cannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome which has been documented in some medical literature.

CAS CADE H IG H . CO M

What do you miss most about the MEDICAL CANNABIS days? The beauty of the early and then later medical Cannabis days was the generosity of the Cannabis community. At the time, we were all fighting against the corporate power structure that was in place that was trying to prevent access to the plant through laws, propaganda and hyperbole. Those of us who were a part of the early journey had seen the positive effects it had on us. The community was generous, sharing and caring and we supported each other. What do you enjoy about our current system? I appreciate knowing where products came from, who grew or manufactured them, what sort of company culture and values they stand by, and have confidence to know they have been tested and are free of unwanted chemicals or other contaminants. What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs? Do what you love. Be passionate about what you are doing. Stay true to the values you hold about the plant. This is a spiritual karmic plant that we all must respect. Don’t sell out to greed, stay committed to your ethics and hold on for the rocky ride. This industry is not for the weak. There are still many difficulties and challenges ahead. We have cleared the path, but paving it into a solid road is still yet to come. What is your favorite setting to enjoy Cannabis? On a mountain peak, snowboarding in the Cascades or elsewhere; in a park with my dogs, out riding my bike or skateboard, at many different venues or chilling at home. The plant provides me with so many benefits and experiences that I enjoy it everywhere.

PROFILE by SIMONE FISCHER

Cannabis for PCOS & Endometriosis SUE CARLTON IS A CANNABIS INDUSTRY-INSIDER AND AN AVID LOVER OF THE PLANT WHO USES MEDICAL MARIJUANA TO RELIEVE SYMPTOMS OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME AND ENDOMETRIOSIS. NO CURE IS AVAILABLE FOR THESE SPECIFIC ISSUES, BUT CARLTON SHARES HOW HER MULTIFACETED APPROACH TO WELLNESS AND CANNABIS IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF HER DAILY LIFE.

What forms of Cannabis do you like to use? My preferable form is patches in THC and CBD because I often can’t eat or consume anything from being nauseous. Even when I smoke, it can cause me to gag and suppositories are more of a night time thing. Capsules would be my third choice. Edibles are typically high in sugar or accompanied by oil mediums such as glycerol or MCT which in doses more than a 1 tsp can cause irritation for people like me with IBS.

“I became a medical patient after that to improve my choice of medication, I didn’t want to go back to taking pharmaceuticals.”

What challenges do you experience using Cannabis as a treatment option? Ensuring consistency within products. With a singular compound such as THCA and CBDA, it’s incredibly difficult to make sure that you get the same dosage. Until they compound out each cannabinoid, we aren’t able to provide individualized medications that can be replicable each and every time. Regardless if the flower is grown in the same greenhouse, same strain, same feed, etc., it will always vary within its cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpene percentage, and won’t be consistent. So, it becomes hard for me when I start consuming one product for a few months, they alter the concentrations during their productions and it won’t have the same results.

Why do you use medical Cannabis? With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome & Endometriosis, I experience symptoms like chronic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), severe cramps, anxiety and depression, loss of appetite and nausea. When did you start using Cannabis medicinally? When I was 20, I was facing a pharmaceutical addiction from prescriptions prescribed such as Klonopin and Adderall. I would black out almost every day, and luckily, I had a friend in my psychology class at PCC who just started her journey to getting clean. She wanted me to switch from pharmaceuticals to Cannabis by giving me samples of her medical garden. It wasn’t until later that year I had my first ovarian cyst rupture after having a period last for 8 months out of the year. I became a medical patient after that to improve my choice of medication, I didn’t want to go back to taking pharmaceuticals. Has it been challenging to determine dosing? A difficult thing, in all honesty, was last year breaking my hand in two spots; I became heavily reliant on high doses of THC chocolate edibles. I was eating over 1000 mg a day and 200-400 mg of CBD a day to counteract the side effects of THC. The pain was so severe, but after four months I lost 10 lbs. and weighed a 109 at 5’4. I weaned myself off because no matter how much I took in an edible form couldn’t bring my mind or body calmness. It was like building a tolerance and forming an addiction all over. What strains or cannabinoids/terpenes provide the best relief in your experience? I go for a blend. I like to encourage multiple terpene cannabinoid blends because of the natural endocannabinoid system in our own human body. I think of it like a supplement: terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids. I like to eat the rainbow. I feel much more satisfied on multiple levels when I create a Cannabis cocktail. It’s not just about one in specific over the other. The plant is beautiful because when fully utilized, a combination of the terps, flavors and cannabinoids can really individualize your medicine.

Tetra carries a nice array of flower from Deschutes Growery, High Noon, East Fork Cultivars, TJ’s Organics and Kleen Karma. Their flower display case is one of the best organized we’ve seen, with an innovative way of showcasing effects and what the structure of the buds look like to customers browsing the selection.

EDIBLES

5/5

Here’s another way that Tetra shines – they’re constantly stocking the latest edibles on the market. We saw items (like the tiny Dynamites) that we’d never seen before. There are a tremendous amount of edibles found at this store – and the staff is quite knowledge

CONCENTRATES 3/5

This is the one area where some might find Tetra to be lacking. If you’re looking for the most high-grade live resin, rosin, shatter or full-melt in town, it may be best to head elsewhere. However, Tetra does carry some items in the concentrates department (like moonrocks.) Overall, just wish they’d stock some of the more high-end brands out there.

ENVIRONMENT

PURPLE CADILLAC by ARNOW BROWNE

Purple Cadillac is a strain boasting deep purple hues and frosty calyxes. Purple Urkle is likely one of the parent strains as aromas of toasted marshmallow infiltrate the room when the jar is opened. The buds are perfectly cured as each node AROMA 4/5 easily snaps off the stem. DENSITY 5/5 I smoked a few bowls out CURE 4/5 of my water pipe and was LOOKS 4/5 very impressed with the FLAVOR 4/5 EFFECT 3/5 flavor and effect. Toasty TOTAL 24/30 marshmallow flavors coat the palette as other flavors fail to keep up. The effects are relaxing, and tiring, great for pain as well. I would recommend this strain to consumers looking for a smooth smoke, and stress relieving high, as smoking this strain is a relaxing way to end the day. 17.33% THC / 0.63% CBD / JUNIPER ANALYTICS

5/5

Tetra is exactly what we like in a Cannabis boutique. The small space is maximized perfectly so that multiple customers can interact and see what they want to get. They’ve maximized every space in the store to provide ample options for display of a wide range of products. It’s a walkable shop, with a great waiting area and near the bustle of Belmont street.

QUICK HIT Tetra has carved out their own niche in Portland. Tetra deserves a spot on the tour for those seeking to have a deep experience within the Portland Cannabis retail scene. Tetra’s budtenders are very personable and knowledgeable and they offer a “Neighbor Discount” if you live within two miles of the store. It’s the service at this cozy-yet-small setup that warrants repeat trips.

TROPICANNA COOKIES by ELITEXTRX

Tropicanna Cookies is a cross of Forum Cut GSC and Tangie. The resulting BHO is in a sugar wax consistency and smells like a ripe orange factory everytime the jar is opened. TOTAL 13/20 Each hit was harsh, and while it had a nice citrus flavor for a second, it quickly faded into a wild coughing fit. It seems as if this extract would have benefitted from more time in the vacuum oven. 73.8% THC / 0.413% CBD / ROSE CITY LABORATORIES

STRAIN 4/5

While not extensive, the flower menu at Farm Grass Table is locally focused with a clear preference for top shelf, grade A buds. I was pleased to see some highquality Hood River growers on the shelf, such as RootsLife Farms and Bula Farms. The flowers on hand were diverse, ranging from classic landrace sativa strains to new school indica hybrids from top breeders. That said, there could have been some sun grown options as most everything here was indoor cultivated. EDIBLES

3/5

While offering a solid variety, the selection of edibles was relatively concise. They have Oregon favorites, like Lunchbox Alchemy’s award-winning Squib and Dirty Arm Farm’s Adabinol, as well as some unique medibles like Muru’s Cannamixer syrups and Little House Food’s clarified ghee butter. They also carry a handful of CBD edibles, including gummies, chocolates and tinctures.

This is a prime example of a classic sativa strain looks and smells quite appealing. The nose is old-school muted muddled fruit typical of classic AROMA 4/5 landrace sativas but DENSITY 3/5 with a subtle hint of CURE 3/5 tangerine. I ground up LOOKS 4/5 and twisted the flower FLAVOR 2/5 EFFECT 3/5 into a joint. The smoke TOTAL 19/30 was a mixed bag, while the high noticeable and produced a nice buzzy energized feeling. The flavor was mild in contrast to the prominent aroma. 17% THC, $12/G

2/5

The concentrates menu could use some attention. There were basically only two companies represented for dabs, NW Kind and Oregon Genetics, and there were no solvent-less options. Outside of that, there were a handful of cartridges from Orchid Essentials, Voyage and Winberry Farms.

ENVIRONMENT 5/5

The environment here stands out and makes up for any shortcomings in other categories. The team here meshes so well that it makes the shopping experience a convenient and enjoyable one. The vibe was high and there was a clear comfort among all the employees. Customers were greeted as soon as they entered the store and given attention and respect throughout the duration of their time shopping. Local arts and crafts adorn the walls providing plenty to soak up as you make your purchase.

QUICK HIT 14/20

Just like with THC and CBD percentages, numbers don’t mean everything. Even if I lived at the other end of Hood River, I’d happily skip shops to come patronize Farm Grass Table. If you’re like me, quality customer service is a huge factor and this dispensary excels where many just outright fail in this area. Between the excellent service, clean and inviting interior, easily accessible location with plenty of parking and good prices to boot, I will surely be back the next time I find myself in Hood River.

SUNSETSHERBET by ROOTS LIFE FARM

Sunset Sherbert is a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties, bred by the Cookie family. This phenotype grown by Roots Life Farm has specks of deep purple hues contrasted by bright orange hairs. Cracking the jar reveals the classic, black pepper funk of Girl Scout Cookies complimented by short bread cookie batter. Each bud is perfectly cured as they snap AROMA 4/5 off the stem with ease. A few DENSITY 4/5 friends and I rolled a couple CURE 5/5 joints of the Sherbet, and LOOKS 4/5 were very impressed with the FLAVOR 5/5 flavor and smoke. I attempted to break a few nugs down by hand, but my fingers quickly became coated in sticky resin, making it hard to continue without the aid of a grinder. I smoked a few bowls with my buddy and really enjoyed the effect and flavor. Each bowl was smooth, non-expansive and tasty, making you want to go back for hit after hit. The effects lean more on the relaxing/tiring side, as I feel pretty lethargic every time I smoke this strain. I would recommend this particular cultivar to consumers having trouble sleeping, and those looking to quell anxiety.

PUFFCO PEAK SLEEK AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN

Up until recently, consumers who wanted to consume packaged concentrates like shatter, oil, or crumble by vaporized had to settle for one of two options. A loadable “pen” style vaporizer and sacrifice quality, or go all-in with a rig (and the deal-breaker for many of us – the dreaded torch.) Since many consumers have been reluctant to use a dangerous tool like a torch while consuming Cannabis in their household, this scenario has prevented a great many from the general public from consuming and experiencing the benefits of a high-quality dab. Enter the Puffco Peak to the rescue. A device so simple, and safe, that even grandma can use it. This tasty treat is a great introduction for those who have never tried Cannabis/hemp before and are curious about edibles. I snapped off a few pieces to try and enjoyed the combination of peanut and toffee flavors. The confectioners at Sweet Cannabis have been hard at work formulating new and delicious chocolate bars, bonbons and other tasty treats. First up was the apricot and coconut milk chocolate bar. I was a bit wary of the combination of flavors, but that quickly changed after my first bite. The coconut flavor is dominant up front followed by the bits of chewy apricot mixed throughout the bar. A delicious mix of tart and sweet that I would have never thought to put together. Another of our favorite products from this edible company is their vegan-friendly dark chocolate bar made with potato chips and sea salt. Each bite is complimented by the salty crunch of the potato chip bits, a perfect balance of flavor. The effects were pretty balanced and functional, something I haven’t experienced a whole lot with edibles. Sweet Cannabis also produces single-serving, 5mg THC versions of many of their edibles, providing easy dosing options for anyone with lower tolerances. Great for those needing to manage pain, while remaining functional. -Will Ferguson

In a small double boiler melt the chocolate chips with the canna-butter. Stir well until just melted and remove from the heat. Drizzle the pineapple with the melted chocolate. MEDICATED OLIVE OIL // Like the sea salt, the

I used a packet to make some sautÊed mushrooms and was very impressed with the quality of the olive oil, and the subtle effects I felt from just 5mg. MEDICATED SEA SALT // This is

one of the most interesting products I have ever come across. The salt comes packaged in ten 5mg packets and can be used over various types of food to enhance flavor and effect. I experimented with using a few packets on a roasted chicken. The salt made the skin flavorful and crisp while locking in the juices from the roasting bird. The effects are pretty mellow and tiring, a few minutes after eating and we were both almost ready for bed. For new and advanced consumers, 5mg packets make it easy to find and gauge their dose. This is an ideal choice for consumers with severe dietary restrictions and those looking to microdose in a more effective manner.

But the interesting effects that come with Amanita Muscaria are the perceptual phenomenon of synesthesia, micropsia and macropsia, or the “Alice in Wonderland” syndrome in which objects become larger or smaller, and where perception can be radically altered. Could this be what led to the visions of reindeer flying, and gifts left from Shaman’s dressed in red and white? With Santa’s workshop known to be in the arctic circle, is it possible that our modern version of Christmas is all based on a psychedelic trip? Sadly, science and history both point to a more mundane truth. Much of Christmas dates to a poem in 1822 by New Yorker Clement Moore, later titled “T’was the night before Christmas.” While there are many illusory connections between the historic uses and colors of Amanita Muscaria, there is no direct evidence of shrooms leading to Christmas legends. With a little imagination, it’s pretty easy to envision Santa flying around in a celestial trip, spreading good cheer in a psychedelic high. So, should you consider trying to fly with the reindeer this Christmas? While Amanita Muscaria can be found around the Northwest, the mushrooms are classified as poisonous. This is mainly due to toxins that can be present in varying ratios in the caps, though fatalities are extremely rare. Ancient customs involved drinking the urine of either a shaman or reindeer, which acted as a filter and increased potency. But we’ll leave the Santa-mushroom-fetish conversation for a different day, although it might make for a fun conversation with a glass of eggnog this Christmas.

Prolific Coast seeds By SIMONE FISCHER @SIMONEFISCHERR

When did you begin growing Cannabis and when did you first start to get into breeding? I started growing bag seeds, 20 years ago outside in Texas, I was just a kid. I grew up in foster homes and life was so overwhelming at times. I hit my friend’s bong for the first time and I knew I found something that made me feel good – [Cannabis] was like a warm blanket. The growing started getting serious as soon as I got to Oregon. When I first arrived, all I was growing was Strawberry Cough and G-13. What made you want to get into breeding? It was the failures of others. These seed companies promised all sorts of success, but the results were anything but. I had kids to feed, bills to pay, I needed the seeds to be good and I needed the bud to be of the highest quality. I was tired of coming up short to the point that I was questioning my [growing] abilities. It’s interesting to think that potentially solid growers are blaming themselves – or their methods – when it’s actually just faulty genetics. What do you have to say? Genetics are key! I acquired some really good cuts, elites, and right away shit changed. I went from struggling to pulling down high-quality herb overnight. The quality was so good my whole existence changed in one harvest. When I started breeding six years ago, it was never about production or numbers, it was about quality first and foremost. I started breeding to make flavors. I love artisan craft; Cannabis cultivation is a place for an artist. What defines “elite” in your mind? In my opinion, an elite strain stands the test of time and is not a fly by night genetic. It’s flower should also fetch the highest dollar on the market. What cultivars have you created for Prolific Coast Seeds to offer within your seed bank? I’m working with business owners from the East Coast who are entering into the hemp scene. We are going to open a large hemp processing and large-scale hemp breeding facility in North Carolina. As for my THC-dominant strains, I currently love the Honey Tree, k-Smorz, Meow and Cake Bomb. My personal favorites are either the Hot Lava or the Meow.

How do you think the competitive nature of the Cannabis market has changed the community in the wake of recreational legalization? Yes. Nobody wins if we don’t help each other out. The true reflection of your character is what you do when you lose. When you lose, everyone’s going to look, but nobody remembers second place. Everyone will eventually forget your loss, but it’s important to own up to your shortcomings in order to improve. I’ve made every mistake and did it twice just make sure. Post-Cannabis normalization, dollars went a long way, but you cannot buy or replicate passion and heart. You have to dedicate yourself one-hundred percent. Least favorite aspect of breeding? Culling seed and getting the seeds out of the bud. It’s so tedious. I flash back to junior high with a ton of bag seeds. It totally sucks and there is no easy way around pulling seeds! That’s why this is a labor of love. When it comes to creating new “elite” Cannabis genetics, what traits and terpenes do you hunt for? The first thing I look for is smell and terpenes - terp is life. When I was building out the first studs, working with Fire OG, Casper OG, Scott’s OG, and Chem 4, I wanted something funky and really loud. Males are just as important as females when making crosses. It’s a shame that gets lost in so many peoples’ work. I just never wanted the offspring of my parentage to be weaker or less interesting than the parents. I feel that the studs should be adding layers and depth. Not just idle pollen donors. Where can people find your genetics? You can find Prolific Coast Seeds at these seed banks: Artizenshop, Thinktank Seedbank 2, Speakeasy Seedbank, Neptune_Seed_Bank and Blockchain Novelties.

Koma is the outspoken owner, head grower and breeder behind Prolific Coast Seeds, with more than a decade of experience growing. Koma began creating strains six years ago. After overcoming numerous adversities, Koma is a recognized figure within the breeding scene. He has made serious strides within Cannabis subculture and is known through the praise of highdemand genetics, like Cakebomb.

What improvements you would like to see within the current Cannabis breeding scene? People should start accepting responsibility for their behavior – especially on social media. When breeders make mistakes, like dropping bad seeds; they should take responsibility for it. When will people own up to their failures? Fifteen years ago, people were very

open about their garden problems, but people got so ostracized and belittled for common things like powdery mildew or pests. So nowadays, to be honest I think people are terrified about their issues, so gardens continue to suffer.
