Our goal is to reverse the stigma associated with Marijuana from decades of misinformation and fear, and replace it with truth. Marijuana is a growing solution to many medical issues, and should be viewed as a source of inspiration and hope for patients worldwide. We also support the overall cause for hemp, which is a viable resource for a variety of commercial applications. 513 pounds of marijuana seized in Queens, New York traffic stop

PHOTO BY MARINO/NY DAILY NEWS/TOKEOFTHETOWN.COM Clement Hunter is led away by cops on suspicion of driving a van, police say, contained 50-pound bales of marijuana in large black garbage bags.

Police say entire van was full of pot By Northwest Leaf Staff

Nearly a quarter-ton of marijuana was found during a routine traffic stop that lead to a five-block chase through the New York City borough of Queens. Inside the vehicle, cops say they spotted 10 black trash bags, some with green cellophane wrapping showing through. A search revealed that each bag contained about 50 pounds of marijuana.

The total weight confiscated was 513 pounds of pot, according to police. Police say the entire back of the van was full of square bundles of pot. The officers, who were driving an unmarked car, tried to stop the vehicle after it failed to signal. The 30-year-old male driver gave chase for a few blocks, then fled on foot after turning onto a dead end road.

He tried to scale a fence, but was placed in handcuffs. The man was charged by police with 50 counts of felony possession of marijuana in the first degree. A suspect must possess at least 10 pounds to qualify for a first degree charge. Ultimately, the man was arraigned on a single count of 1st degree felony marijuana possession and bail was set at $50,000.

Billboard on display through Nov. will be seen by millions each week By Northwest Leaf Staff Sensible Washington, the group seeking to legalize marijuana for adults in this state, has purchased billboard space along I-5 in the south-end city of Fife. The words ‘Legalize in 2011’ are displayed huge on the board, beneath the advertisement’s tagline: “Because Drug Dealers Don’t ID.” “Thanks to generous donations from two Sensible Washington volunteers and support and cooperation of the billboard company, we now have North and South-facing billboards at this location,” Sensible Washington said on its website. According to the billboard’s owners, Gotcha Covered Media, the signage will be posted through the November 2011 election season and campaign efforts. More than 2 million cars pass through the area each week, according to GCM.

Massive success in food for joints promotion at California dispensary California dispensary Granny Purps collected more than 11,000 pounds of food in a holiday promotion where patients received one pre-rolled joint in exchange for a four food item donation. The dispensary handed out about 2,000 of the complimentary joints, with one grow supplier even donating medicine for the dispensary to distribute in the promotion, reports

The Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper. The recipient of the massive donation drive was Second Harvest Food Bank, which noted that the dispensary’s small staff of eight raised an amount more typical of a 30-or40-person business. Granny Purps co-owner Nancy Black was impressed by her patient’s generosity in this troubling economy. “We have an incredible group

of compassionate patients..I love that our patients are so compassionate,” she said, speaking to The Sentinel. “When we told them that we were doing this, their response was amazing.” Among other talents, Granny Purps is known for their tasty, homemade medible cookies and treats, and popular bud cookbooks. ## By Northwest Leaf Staff ##

Can you be fired for medicating after work & off-the-clock? The State Supreme Court may rule in drug test policy case. By Northwest Leaf Staff This month, the Washington state Supreme Court will hear arguments from a woman who was fired from her job after a drug test revealed she was using marijuana. The Bremerton woman, a legal medical marijuana patient, was recommended cannabis to help with myriad problems ranging from debilitating migraines to chronic pain and nausea. She only medicated at home, and in such small doses, her lawyer said, that there is no way there could have been a lingering after-effect the next day at work. Her marijuana usage was brought to light after the Coloradobased customer service job that hired her informed her of its drug test policy. The woman notified her employer that she would certainly fail the test, but had medical documentation to prove her legal status. She took the drug test, began working, and was fired about a week later after testing positive for cannabis, according to a December SeattlePI.com news article. The Court of Appeals ruled against the woman last year, saying the state’s medical marijuana law

Photo by Northwest Leaf Staff protects patients only from criminal prosecutions, not in employment disputes, according to a SeattlePI.com article. The woman’s lawyer says she is protected under the 1998 Medical Use of Marijuana Act, aka I-682. Washington State’s medical marijuana laws may be clarified under a bill expected to be introduced to the legislature by State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Wells. The bill seeks to ban employers from firing -- or refusing to hire

-- marijuana patients, solely because of off-site, medicinal use of cannabis. Exceptions would include if the workplace involves physically hazardous or public safety duties. “Patients suffering from terminal and debilitating medical conditions shouldn’t be forced to choose between a job and a therapy that helps them,” said Alison Holcomb, ACLU’s drug policy director, in a friend-of-the-court brief filed this month in the case. ## 7

When will the US do the right thing

and tax legal marijuana? How long can we ignore the $13.9 billion addition to the economy, as estimated in a 2005 Harvard study by Jeffrey Miron? No longer. By Moe Green // Northwest Leaf

13.9

billion is the number of reasons, in US dollars, that Harvard economist Jeffrey A. Miron has for legalizing marijuana. In his 2005 study, Miron estimated that $7.7 billion would be saved in government expenditures and, if taxed comparably to tobacco and alcohol, $6.2 billion would be added to the tax coffers. In a stronger 2005 economy, perhaps the $13.9 billion could be ignored. In today’s economy, that staggering sum cannot be ignored. America’s largest cash crop, marijuana, needs to be taxed. That was not a typo: marijuana is indeed the largest cash crop in America. Furthermore, it isn’t even close. At a bustling

nwleaf.com

$35.8 billion annually, marijuana tops corn, the closest competitor, by $12.5 billion, and wheat by $23.3 billion. But, unlike corn and wheat, marijuana is not being taxed. Thirteen billion dollars in possible economic benefits is being flushed down the toilet thanks to the Washington bureaucracy and their alcohol/tobacco lobbyists. That said, while the $13 billion in economic benefits is not being used to fund schools and repair roads, it is going somewhere. Thanks to the so-called war on drugs, $36 billion is being handed over to drug cartels. Ending this futile war would devastate cartels and bring that money back to Americans. Legalizing marijuana would benefit America threefold. First, as previously explained, marijuana would bring billions of

dollars in tax benefits to the government. Secondly, legalizing marijuana would save America billions in prosecution and incarceration fees. Third, legalizing marijuana would take a $36 billion industry and transfer it from the hands of drug cartels to deserving Americans. The third benefit is often wrongly overlooked by supporters and critics alike. While the tax benefits get highlighted in newspapers across the country, almost no one seems to mention what a marijuana industry could do for America. A low estimate of jobs created would be in the high tens of thousands -- a moderate estimate places the number in the hun-

dreds of thousands. America, with her 9.3 percent unemployment rate, is sitting on a job gold mine. So why does marijuana remain illegal? America can choose to wait idly as marijuana is slowly legalized town by town and state by state. But this waiting game will cost Americans billions, possibly hundreds of billions of dollars, if the current course holds. Or America can do the right thing and bring billions of dollars back to the economy. For far too long, legalizing marijuana has been the right thing to do. Now, legalizing marijuana is also the sensible thing to do.

The rules for taxing MMJ in this state have changed. Northwest Leaf and the local media were informed of the changes to Department of Revenue policy with the letter at left. Everyone in the industry needs to stay up-to-date on current state & federal laws.

there for 6 months, and have helped improve the image of an oftenbattered medical marijuana industry. With the robbery at Purple Cross in Seattle recently, there has been frequent negative coverage of medical marijuana collectives in the mainstream news

Fortunately, it only takes five minutes inside Bizzee Bee to realize that these misconceptions are simply unfounded. The truth behind Bizzee Bee, like most other collectives, comes from personal experience with sick patients that have had little or no success with traditional medicine. Nobody knows

this better than Sophia. “My mom passed away last spring from a chronic debilitating condition -- she was on a cocktail of heavy pain medicine from the doctor that basically killed her,” she shared, pausing to take a breath. “That was our wake-up call that there needs to be a viable alternative to opiate pain management for sick patients.” It was that tragic wake-up that led Sophia and her father Jeff to start the collective. Jeff had spent his

That’s

why we’re here.” The patient network they’ve created out of a sad situation has become a great legacy for Sophia’s mom. The quality of service and medicine is better than any other network in the area. There are 1520 consistent strains available inside, with donations ranging

from $4-15. They also have a great selection of edibles, with eight different vendors bringing in the best of their crop. Included in the selection of medibles are wheat and glutenfree items, a valuable option for patients with stomach or digestive problems. ARTICLE CONTINUED ON PG. 14

"EEYORE" A cross between DNA Genetics CanNalope Haze and the original OG Kush. A powerful medicinal sativa strain, created four months ago by a Washington grower.

Look for it at West Coast Wellness Opening January 2011

Description From Dnagenetics.com The Cannalope Haze Cannabis Seeds are renowned for their very sweet smelling buds that have a melon taste. This translates into silky smoothness on inhale and exhale, as well as amazing flavour to titillate your taste buds! The heady hitting high is a top one that hits you in the temples and eyes. She is fast finisher and produces a good yield, making her a very easy plant to grow. Mild Haze qualities, with an expansive smoke and good resin production, results in great water hash. This cross was made from Cannabis Seeds acquired separately from some close friends of us at DNA. The low flowering time of the Cannalope makes her a great strain to breed. She is great with skin creams and lotions, which help with arthritis and other muscle/joint pain,” Jeff said, displaying a proud grin. “We’re always working to find new things and infuse the essential cannabis oils.” For one budtender at Bizzee Bee, the gluten-free products and honeys have made a major difference in her life. She is Cat Bryan, the platinum blonde girl

who you would never expect to work at a collective. In March of 2001, Cat went into a routine surgery for her abdominal area. During the procedure, a nerve in her stomach was negatively affected, and the result was a paralyzed stomach. She was forced to spend the next eight years on a feeding tube, unable to enjoy food and her previous quality of life. Eventually, after medicine and painkillers prescribed by

her doctor had failed, she turned to medical marijuana. “I’ve now been off the feeding tube for a year and a half,” she said. “Because of my experience, I’m very passionate about the work that I’m doing here.” Cat went on to explain that the traits she values most in a collective are honesty and kindness for patients. Unfortunatel,y as she has seen time and time again, it’s not something every collective practices.

“I’ve worked at several different places, and had to leave one because of how they treated their patients. And that’s why I’m here at Bizzee Bee. I know the values I stand by are in place here, and we’re able to focus on our main goal: helping sick people.” For patients all over Western Washington, Bizzee Bee is a great option for finding medicine in a safe and friendly way. any people who use Cannabis (Medical Marijuana) as medicine in the US have traditionally done so under the label "self prescribed". This means that the individual had a positive experience with the medicine and may have continued to use to derive a desired therapeutic effect. Due to the laws in the US, that individual has historically subjected themselves to criminal charges and penalty, engaging in illegal activities to procure or produce their medicine. Your Doctor: is no strict definition for the word drug - common usage and understanding is "a substance taken into a living system that alters function." Cannabis is an herbal medicine not requiring of chemical alteration to bring about its effects, aside from heat activation. There has never been a documented case of death by overdose from the use of Cannabis in any way, unlike other schedule 1, schedule 2, and even schedule 3 substances. With 15 states voting for and allowing the use of Cannabis medicinally, and an ever mounting body of knowledge in scientific research as to the therapeutic benefits of Cannabis, this classification must be changed. A schedule 2 classification would be a start, recognizing it as "having a high abuse risk, but accepted as safe for medicinal purposes". This might be a good start to help shift the paradigm, but still might not be the right classification - as other examples of schedule 2 are morphine, oxycodone (OxyCotin), and cocaine. The Ultimate Bubble Hash Guide Hashish has been used around the world for centuries, but it hasn’t been until the 21st century that hash gained the potency and purity that it has now. With the invention of water extraction in the early 1990’s, hash has become one of the purest methods to use your medicine. Hashish has a variety of medical uses, and can be made to different purities, depending on your personal medical needs. This tutorial is meant to help illustrate the entire process of making bubble bag hash.

After the bags are tucked into the smaller bucket, pour the trimmings/bud in the bag.

To make good quality hash it takes a bit of time and a clear understanding of the process, and of course good material. First order some bubble bags on line. These bags are necessary to catch the tricomes. 5 gallon bags are the easiest to use, but they can be ordered all the way up to 32 gallons. If using the 5 gallon bag, you will also need a 5 gallon bucket. Next you’ll need about a quarter pound of trimmings, actual bud can be used, but in my opinion, it’s a waste of good bud, so use trimmings you planned to throw away (leaves, stems, etc.) At this point, soak trimmings in water so they don’t float as soon as they are put into the bubble bags. Place bags in the bucket, one at a time, with the finest mesh bag on the bottom. After this is done, pour trimmings into bags and then pour ice water in so the mix almost fills the bucket. Now it’s time to start mixing it up. We used an electric kitchen hand mixer, but a drill with a paint mixer attachment can also be used. Mix everything in the bucket for 30 minutes, making sure there is enough ice to keep it cold. Once it has been mixed, pull the first bag out with ice water and trimmings and set it aside in a large bowl. You will be repeating this all one more time to make sure all tricome is removed. Next keep pulling the rest of the bags out one at a time, using a spoon to collect all the tricome on the screen of each bag. Put all the material collected on a glass bak-

While the trimmings are soaking in the ice water you want to blend them as thoroughly as possible to unsure the tricromes are breaking free. Once blended, squeez the bag to force all the water out as shown below. Then scrape, transfer bags, and repeat the process.

ing pan in different piles for each bag. Each one is a slightly different quality hash. Next, repeat the whole process again through the series of bags to make sure all the THC has been removed before setting the bag aside. As you get through each bag, the mesh gets finer, collecting a higher concentration of hash each time. When you get down to the last bag, scrape everything possible, and then rinse all the bags and let them dry. The next step is to dry your hash. The best method for drying is to leave it out in the air for a couple

days and cure naturally. But for a quick dry, place the tray in a conventional oven turned down very low with the door left partially open. Our final product from this batch was a 8 gram ball of hash, part of which is shown in the picture at-right-center. Enjoy a high-quality hash bowl!

Don't forget to flush! No, not your toilet... Your Buds!

When it comes to producing high-quality medicine, there’s more to the growing process than simply planting the seeds and watering them. New growers often walk into a grow shop and are instantly overwhelmed by the number and variety of modern fertilizers. Labels like “Bloom Booster” and “Grape Blend” promise sweet tasting benefits and positive nutrients for whatever type of plant people might be growing. In most cases, people experience larger yields from their grows, with larger and more potent buds in the end. The downside to the nutrients is that the chemicals can linger inside the bud after harvest, producing a harsh smoke and chemical aftertaste. This isn’t suitable for medical use, and it can ruin a crop. The secret to getting the positive results from the nutrients without compromising the crop is a proper flush. Two weeks before plants are ready to be cut down for curing, all nutrient use should stop completely. During each watering for the final two weeks, only 100% pure water should be used.

Above: A properly-flushed cannabis sample sits next to a flushing agent and a PH testing device.

The water naturally filters and flushes out the chemicals, leaving the buds pure and preserving the sweet taste while medicating. While some people only flush for 2-5 days, the longer the flushing period, the more chemicals that will be removed from the plant. Flushing agents like the one pictured above can also be used to help speed-up the process of removing unwanted chemicals. They are available at most shops, and can have a positive benefit on the quality of the flush, and the medicine that’s eventually produced. For growers that do use chemical nutrients, please note that they should not be poured into the main water system after use. This can contaminate our ground water and is not environmentally-friendly. Please dispose of your old water and nutrients in a safe and legal way. Do the right thing!

Chemicals like those pictured above will give your plants bigger buds & faster growth rates, but they can also linger in the medicine after harvest -- a concern to every grower!

Yogi Bear

Cowboys are all “Fuck Yeah! this year, what with Red Dead Redemption winning a ton of Game of the Year awards. This Coen Brothers remake of a classic 1968 John Wayne film of the same name is pretty damn good. Jeff Bridges is still the man after all this years (*until I saw Tron). The story is a better adaptation of the novel than the original film. Hailee Steinfeld is brilliant as Mattie Ross. This is probably one of the best westerns I have seen in recent years. The Dude would have made the Duke proud.

Best boxing movie since Stallone fought the evil Russian machine-man some 25 years ago. Marky Mark is pretty kick ass for being a former underwear model turned actor. This film is generating Oscar buzz and for once I agree. The script holds tight and the fight scenes both in and out of the ring are pretty well-executed. Nothing says Merry Christmas like Irish people and a bloody nose.

Movies that really too heavily on visual effects annoy me. This movie is 85% pure eye candy but someone forgot to write a decent script. The light cycle race is awesome. I've seen better CGI in some video games as of late, which was a disappointment considering this should be the be-all-end-all in visual masturbation. Speaking of which, Olivia Wilde was in tight leather. Jeff Bridges (The old one) is pretty damn good with what he is given, which ain't much. Seeing it in 3D felt like a waste of money.

Note to Hollywood: Stop pillaging my youth. I grew up watching HannaBarbara cartoons on Saturday mornings. I remember Yogi and Boo-Boo being witty, this was an affront to my memories. This movie is family friendly. Children that enjoy shows like Barney might enjoy it, while you the parent will wish you would have snuck a beer or mind-numbing medicine into the movie to dull the pain. Really, this is one bear that should have stayed in hibernation.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, PC ) Story mode was OK, but the game really shines in multi-player mode. Stab, shoot and main your enemies with gusto. Drive a remote controlled C4 car and blow their limbs off. Great carnage fun times.

Rock Band 3 (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) Same old game with added bonuses, like all new songs. 3-part vocal harmonies allows more singers to join in. Playing keyboards can be quite fun too. The “story mode can be a little off-putting and confusing, there is definitely a lack of real direction there. The best party game ever keeps getting better. 23
