Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Glass Issue of the Leaf ! I MADE MY FIRST PIPE out of an L-shaped carburetor part that I cleaned and polished into a workable Cannabis smoking device in my dad’s auto shop. This was back when smoking weed meant choosing between an apple, a pop can – or the one friend who was lucky enough to have a disgustingly resinated pipe. These early days of Cannabis slummery gave me an immense appreciation for clean and functional art, which we have documented in the Leaf for a decade now. One of my earliest stoner memories was buying a bong (tobacco water pipe) for the first time at Piece of Mind, with a feeling of sexy fear that came with smoking an illegal drug in an inspiring way. Walking through the glass shop full of colorful art shaped my view of Cannabis as more than just a drug to consume, but a lifestyle defined by art that is delivering the best feeling in the world: getting baked!

N
ebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ remarks on the supposed dangers of marijuana were widely condemned after he said at a press conference, “If you legalize marijuana, you’re going to kill your kids.” “These words didn’t elevate the discussion,” scolded the Lincoln Journal-Star in an op-ed. “Rather, his oversimplification of the topic ignored the pleas of parents with sick children – and that the legislation being debated later that day was specific to medical uses.” Despite the mild-mannered nature of the newspaper’s rebuke, the fact remains that Gov. Ricketts’ remarks weren’t just an “oversimplification,” of course – they were an outright falsehood. Nebraska, along with Idaho, is one of just two states left that have absolutely no protection for medical Cannabis patients, not even a lowly CBD law.

awmakers on March 18 filed the latest bill to legalize Cannabis in Delaware. Pressure is greater than ever before on the General Assembly to pass it, according to Delaware Online, with neighboring states moving to legalize and with advocates citing the need for job growth to recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. House Bill 150, introduced by Rep. Ed Osienski (D-Newark), would allow adults 21 and older to buy up to an ounce of weed from a licensed seller. It would tax Cannabis at 15 percent, which is lower than most states that have legalized. Lawmakers want to remain competitive with nearby states such as New Jersey, and to cut down on illegal sales. State Auditor Kathy McGuiness’ office estimated Delaware could bring in $43 million a year from legal weed. The bill’s sponsors stress that Cannabis revenues are not a “stable revenue source,” especially with nearby states also establishing legal marijuana markets.

NEW JERSEY LEGALIZES!
12 Photo by Grav
t long last, New Jersey has legalized Cannabis. Nearly four months after voters passed a constitutional amendment approving adult-use marijuana in the Garden State, Gov. Phil Murphy has signed a bill establishing the state’s legal framework. Murphy also signed a decriminalization bill that will end pot possession arrests. As reported in this space previously, state lawmakers and Gov. Murphy had been in a stalemate over the proposed legislation, stemming from the governor’s desire to see penalties for underage possession included in the bill. While some lawmakers felt content to leave the ball in Murphy’s court and let him either sign or veto the original bills, a last ditch attempt to salvage the legislation was made and a “cleanup” bill that includes penalties for underage possession passed the state Senate and Assembly. Shortly thereafter, in late February, Murphy signed the legal framework and decriminalization bills, legalizing Cannabis in New Jersey and establishing a regulated market. The amended legislation makes underage possession subject to a written warning. Incredibly, more than 6,000 people were arrested for minor marijuana possession in New Jersey since voters legalized pot in November 2020. In the six-week stalemate between the governor and lawmakers, more than 2,000 people were arrested for Cannabis. Fortunately, the day after Gov. Murphy signed the bills into law, the state’s attorney general ordered prosecutors to drop all pot possession-related cases that were still pending as of February 22. While it clearly was not smooth sailing, the legislative hurdle has been cleared and an adult-use market established. Cannabis is now (finally) legal in New Jersey. Check back next month to find out what goes wrong next.
RETAIL POT (FINALLY) COMES
TO PORTLAND LEAFMAGAZINES.COM LEAFMAGAZINES.COM
A
fter a slow start, Maine’s biggest city is getting into recreational Cannabis in a big way. Licenses have already been approved for two adult-use pot shops to open in Portland, and 31 additional retail permits could be awarded soon. At the moment, 59 canna-business applications are awaiting approval as retail, testing and manufacturing companies look to set up shop in Portland in 2021. Of course, the state launched adult-use retail sales more than five months ago, on October 9, 2020. Despite some early hiccups, the program got off to a good start with thousands of transactions over the long weekend resulting in $250,000 in recreational Cannabis sales. But Portland missed the party. That’s because, prior to the start of retail Cannabis, the city council capped the number of adult-use pot shops allowed to open. The city limited itself to 20 retail stores at the start of legal sales, in an effort to ease into the industry. However, the point system they planned to use to select those 20 stores prioritized in-state businesses. A lawsuit by an out-ofstate applicant brought the issue to court, where a federal judge ruled that the point system was unfairly discriminatory. The federal ruling left the city scrambling for a fix but certain to miss the start of legal sales. Ultimately, residents nixed the retail shop cap through a referendum, and even chose to reduce the required distance between stores from 250 to 100 feet. Now, five months after the official start of sales in the state – and more than four years since a tax and regulate plan was approved on Election Day in 2016 – retail Cannabis has come to Portland. As we go to press, SeaWeed Co. and Grass Roots Marijuana Shop have

already received approval to open, and a number of other Cannabis stores are expected to be licensed and operational in the coming months, according to the Portland Press Herald. While medical Cannabis sales have dwarfed recreational sales numbers since retail kicked off in October, adult-use marijuana revenue has steadily increased each month. So far, the state has sold $9.29 million of retail pot. Portland has only received a handful of medical marijuana dispensary applications. In fact, even the state’s biggest medical pot provider, Wellness Connection of Maine, has applied to switch its Portland location over to retail sales, after operating as a medical dispensary in the city for nine years.
THE FIGHT FOR
CANNABIS
FREEDOM INCONNECTICUT G
ov. Ned Lamont’s most recent legalization proposal has been met with scathing criticism on all sides. Yet, lawmakers refuse to give up on advancing marijuana-law reform in Connecticut this year. In fact, there’s even a sense of budding optimism that the legislature can put forward an adult-use bill that delivers badly needed revenue, as well as equity and long overdue reforms. The governor, an outspoken proponent of retail pot, introduced his legalization bill with his budget proposal in February. While the bill allows for possession of up to an ounce and a half of Cannabis and establishes retail sales in Connecticut beginning in May 2022, it does not do much to address social equity or criminal justice reform. In fact, critics believe the bill essentially turns the new adult-use industry over to established medical marijuana businesses, thanks to the head start given to those companies by delaying the implementation of an ultimately lacking equity program. Many advocates have been left wondering how smaller, minority-owned businesses would be able to enter the industry under the proposed legislation.
Lamont’s administration has tried to frame the governor’s bill as a starting point, insisting that equity is not being ignored and that the legislation can be expanded. Still, critics point to restrictions on expunging past Cannabis criminal records and outlawing home cultivation as further evidence of the legislation’s shortcomings. A group called Black and Brown United in Action even called Lamont’s bill “an insult to democracy” and “another knee on the neck of Black and Photo by Logan Weaver Brown communities.” Nonetheless, House Speaker Matthew Ritter remains optimistic that lawmakers can advance a strong tax and regulate bill. In addition to the governor’s proposal, legislators are also considering a separate legalization measure introduced by the House Labor and Public Employees Committee, which has received support from advocates. Speaker Ritter is spearheading a negotiating process as groups in the House and Senate work though the bills in an effort to create a unified measure with enough support to move forward. While the governor’s bill has been met with harsh criticism from advocates who support legalization, it has also dredged up prohibitionist rhetoric about increased traffic accidents and children overdosing. The Connecticut State Medical Society, which vehemently opposes legalization, actually likened retail sales of legal Cannabis to Big Tobacco and Big Pharma. In written testimony, the group warned, “The rush towards legalization of recreational marijuana ignores how profit-driven corporations hooked generations of Americans on cigarettes and opioids, killing millions and straining public resources.” It’s difficult to know where to begin unpacking that statement.
Reform in Rhode Island

group of Rhode Island lawmakers unveiled a novel approach to druglaw reform in the State Senate last month. Six Democratic senators introduced a bill that would replace criminal penalties for drug possession with a $100 civil fine. The goal of the measure is simply to stop arresting people for possessing drugs. The decriminalization bill arrived amid a flurry of reform legislation in Rhode Island. Senate leaders are pushing their commercial Cannabis bill and Gov. Dan McKee recently introduced a competing adult-use plan. Former Gov. Gina Raimondo had her own legal pot proposal before leaving office to become President Biden’s Commerce Secretary. Raimondo favored a state-run marijuana industry, while McKee – who took her place – and the Senate leaders prefer a privatized commercial system. While the decrim bill would not legalize drugs or establish a retail program, it would address one of the most pressing issues users face. Possession of small amounts of drugs can Photo by Nathan Dumlao lead to big penalties – as much as three years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. The new legislation would eliminate the threat of jail time, replacing penalties for possession with a simple $100 civil fine. Of course, you wouldn’t get to keep your drugs if you get caught. The substances would be subject to seizure by law enforcement. And, naturally, there would be no protections for the manufacture or distribution of narcotics. Nonetheless, the drug decrim bill could have a positive impact on many lives if passed. Rhode Island lawmakers are also considering legislation to establish safe consumption sites, which could greatly reduce drug overdose deaths. The law would allow “harm reduction centers … where persons may safely consume pre-obtained controlled substances.” The Senate has already passed the bill. Should it become law, Rhode Island would be the first state to legalize sites for safe consumption.

NY AND CT new poll indicates widespread support for passing a progressive tax and regulate plan in New York State. The survey, conducted by Consensus Strategies in early March 2021, found that 61 percent of New Yorkers are in favor of legalizing marijuana. The poll also found support for commercial Cannabis, as 56 percent of New Yorkers approve of retail sales in their communities and 53 percent favor delivery services. The poll found less enthusiasm in New York City, however, as 52 percent of NYC residents are against the idea of retail shops opening in their neighborhood. Home cultivation is favored by 52 percent of New Yorkers, according to the poll. Support for home grows soars to 78 percent among New Yorkers 18-34 years old. As we go to press, personal cultivation appears likely to be included in the state’s legalization legislation. The poll also found that 59 percent of New Yorkers support the idea of investing revenue raised through Cannabis sales tax in communities most impacted by marijuana prohibition. In Connecticut, polling reveals overwhelming support for legal pot and criminal justice reforms. The Sacred Heart University survey, conducted in mid-February 2021, found that 66 percent of Connecticut residents favor legalization. Additionally, 62 percent of residents support expungement for potrelated criminal records. The survey found that support for legalization in Connecticut is bipartisan, however, more Democrats (77 percent) back adult-use marijuana than Republicans (52 percent). Encouragingly, 72 percent of residents believe Cannabis has “fewer effects” or “the same amount of effects” as alcohol. Discouragingly, 41 percent of Connecticut residents consider marijuana a gateway drug.

TELL US ABOUT HOW THE KUSH GROOVE SHOP GOT ITS START AND YOUR SPECIALTIES? The brand was initially launched online in 2011. To start, we sold our products out of the trunks of our vehicles and local festivals, such as the Boston Freedom Rally and Extravaganja. As the brand grew, we eventually opened the doors to our first flagship store in Boston in the fall of 2015. We specialize in stoner streetwear products, as well as numerous Cannabis accessories such as rolling trays, grinders, vape pens and more.

THE KUSH GROOVE SHOP has been in business for over six years, showcasing custom-designed apparel and fine smoking accessories in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood. The shop is run by Mike Pires and Marcus Jonson-Smith, both pillars of the community who’ve consistently made a memorable impression for their brand at local Cannabis community events and via their strong social media presence. As grassroots activists and entrepreneurs, we wanted to highlight their store for this month’s Stoner Owner feature and find out a little more about how they got their groove.

SO, YOU GUYS DESIGN ALL OF YOUR OWN APPAREL. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRENDS GOING ON RIGHT NOW? ANY NEW RELEASES IN THE WORKS WE CAN HEAR ABOUT? At this moment, tie dye is making a resurgence like never before. Pastel colors and oversized clothing are becoming more popular these days. Also, supporting independent brands and businesses is even more important to folks than ever before. Currently, we’re working on some preliminary t-shirt designs for our 7/10 release, a new and improved Trippy Kit 2.0, and another vaporizer.
THE KUSH GROOVE CREW IS KNOWN TO THROW SOME BANGING EVENTS. DO YOU THINK SOCIAL CONSUMPTION WILL HAPPEN SOON IN MASS.? WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS NOW THAT COVID-19 IS GETTING BETTER AND THE VACCINE IS OUT? I know I’m not alone in saying this but, I am ready to put the unforgettable, nightmarish year of 2020 behind us and get back to ‘normal life.’ Sadly, I miss smoking with my friends and family at our events like the 100-Gram Jam, or painting and tasting edibles during Paint Nite. Social consumption is long overdue in the state of Massachusetts. Boston had a famous bar ‘where everybody knows your name’ – I think it’s about time the same can be said for a smoking lounge. WE’RE ENTERING A NEW ERA OF RECREATIONAL CANNABIS IN THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS. CAN YOU WEIGH IN ON YOUR OPINION ABOUT THE CURRENT REGULATIONS AND WHERE YOU HOPE THINGS END UP? I think the CCC (Cannabis Control Commission) has done their best to hear the opinions of the people and implement those voices into regulations. By closely studying other markets, they were able to establish regulations in our state that will allow businesses to be successful and sustainable. Granting delivery licenses exclusively to minority entrepreneurs was huge. It shows that the CCC is listening and doing their best to make this an inclusive industry. Like anyone else, we hope for a fair marketplace – a marketplace that gives the ‘small-time’ dealers who served our communities for decades an opportunity to join the legal market.

You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

NEW ENGLAND EXTRACTION FINDING THE UNMET NEED

After Dr. David C. Levine retired from his lifelong career as a physician and surgeon, he still yearned to help patients and other people looking for relief from pain and the symptoms of ailments and illnesses. After hearing anecdotal evidence from friends and family on the efficacy of CBD (cannabidiol) in treating a variety of conditions, he vowed to bring the ethics of a doctor to the extraction industry.
Since opening their doors on October 1, 2020, the team at NEX has been extracting oils, full spectrum and broad spectrum distillates, and isolates from hemp including CBD, CBG and Delta 8 to formulate into gummies, tinctures, chewable tablets and water-soluble formulations for beverages. They work with local farmers to get their products from the field to the lab to store shelves, including private white labeling for branding purposes. They’re also looking to reach people who want to buy bulk amounts of high-quality extracted cannabinoids.
“As a physician, I’m not used to harming people,” Dr. Levine tells Northeast Leaf Magazine. “I’m not going to make any false claims like, ‘this will cure this and that.’ We sell nothing smokable – no flowers or dabs – because we don’t want to promote smoking.”
Our tour of the facility began with the hemp biomass as it entered the building. NEX also has a massive 80-foot drying machine to pull out moisture and help out farmers who don’t have the space to properly dry out their crops. Director of Sales and Marketing Steve DelBene tells me, “We reject a lot of biomass. The biggest thing for us is transparency, integrity and honest testing, so if there’s pesticides or mold, we turn it away.”
The doctor continues, “We know that there are receptors in the body as part of our endocannabinoid system. We’re interested in measurable objective results from clinical studies to determine the benefits. I founded New England Extraction with these core values and the goal to put together a team of scientific experts in their respective fields.”
19
Dr. Levine assembled scientists with specialties in chemistry, extraction processes, culinary and beverage sciences, as well as color and odor remediation. The Chief Science Officer, Trevor Bozeman PhD – who oversees the operation – has a Doctorate in Chemistry and has been involved in the medical Cannabis industry for two decades as an advocate, researcher, grower, hydrocarbon and supercritical CO2 extraction specialist.
“WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE RECEPTORS IN THE BODY AS PART OF OUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM. WE’RE INTERESTED IN MEASURABLE OBJECTIVE RESULTS FROM CLINICAL STUDIES TO DETERMINE THE BENEFITS.” — DR. DAVID LEVINE
Everything in the lab was custom-built to the specifications of the lab’s biochemical engineers, including Director of Laboratory Operations Jeff Natale and Assistant Director of Operations Alexander Moliver. As Jeff explains, they specialize in cold ethanol extraction to avoid contaminants. “We save ethanol by getting the most out of it. Cold temperature and two-part filters keep out plant material, lipids, fats and waxes. Much of the spent hemp material is composted by farmers.” Once refined, the oils, distillates and isolates are used in special formulations, including the exciting new chewable tablets. Their water-soluble extracts also mix perfectly and clearly into liquids so they’re blended and not suspended, with no solidifying on top. It’s clear that the experts at New England Extraction share a desire to create new formulations without cutting corners. As my tour winds down, Dr. Levine tells me, “There’s room in this vertical for ethics. We want to help the farmers stimulate their business and the patients to heal their bodies and minds. We’re always trying to find the unmet need.”

SEED: COMMUNITY, CHARACTE

“We see the nascent Cannabis industry as an opportunity to disrupt the status quo, shaking off the good ol’ boys and creating an industry that reflects equality.” This spring, Seed Dispensary and it’s co-located Core Cannabis Museum opened their doors to the public in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. Northeast Leaf had the chance to tour SEED’s Core Cannabis Museum before its grand opening and catch a glimpse into this educational art exhibit. With style and grace, curator and Seed CEO April Arrasate took charge and walked us through the entire museum. There seem to be many functioning parts of Seed. Can you tell us more about the brand, how you started and your current community goals? Cannabis possesses an inherent power to unify people, and it is Seed’s mission to promote that notion. Throughout American history, Cannabis has been used as a weapon to divide people and cultures. Our goal is to create a conversation around the racially and economically charged history of Cannabis, and to promote Cannabis as a unifier.
apR. 2021
TER, CANNABIS
JAMAICA PLAIN, MASSACHUSETTS The museum aims to provide a platform for multiple perspectives relating to the defective system of Cannabis law in the United States. Decades of unsupported policies and the enforcement of the laws born of those policies have and continue to facilitate government overreach, as well as create undue hardship – particularly in low-income and minority communities. Core will curate exhibits that urge people to look back at events and influences that sculpted our relationship with Cannabis, as well as recognize and memorialize the inequitable events leading up to the multi-billion dollar industry. By bringing voice to those negatively impacted by these inequities, perhaps we can assist a new generation as they scrutinize our relationships with substances as a whole to create more reasonable drug policy. The current exhibition, American Warden, encourages guests to wholly consider the concept of incarceration, highlights the contrast between cultural benefits and the prohibition of Cannabis, and brings voice to those whose lives were impacted negatively by the current inequitable system. Does Seed plan to pheno-hunt genetics and make their own in-house solventless extractions? We intend to equip our customers with the knowledge to confidently select products best suited for their needs. At Seed, we offer guests a “Pure Vape Promise” that extends to all of our concentrates. We recognize the black-market hazards of residual solvents, harmful additives, synthetic flavorings and cheap hardware that have plagued the industry – particularly vapes and concentrates. Not only are all Seed products subject to rigorous state testing requirements that eliminate the risk of residual solvents, but Seed curates our vape and concentrate line – only accepting products that contain two ingredients: Cannabis oil and terpenes.
We also care deeply about the science and culture of Cannabis – we understand the complex nature of the plant and its therapeutic properties. We intend to equip our customers with the knowledge to confidently select products best suited for their needs. As retail-only operators, we are also committed to providing the full spectrum of brand variety required to keep our shelves stocked with quality, innovative products. We pay homage to the culture by partnering with boutique growers to bring decades of cultivation experience out of the illicit market and into the legal market. Seed is owned and operated by women, by people of color, by your neighbors, and by people who have spent time incarcerated by the war on drugs. By example, we are evolving the industry away from stereotypes and misinformation, and toward a future of diversity and unity. Together with our guests, we aim to seed our community with new values, seed minds with new ideas, and seed lives with the inherent power of Cannabis. For those who are still in the dark about social justice reform, can you fill us in on what this means? As an attorney with a biotech background who entered the Cannabis industry in 2012, I can tell you from experience that the tables I have sat around are extremely homogenous – in terms of color, gender and most notably, socio-economic status. The rich are poised to get richer in every industry and at every turn – making it nearly impossible for the average American and certainly those from low-income communities to advance economically.
While we all love flower, as a biochemist, I believe in the ability to fine-tune compounds to achieve a desired result – something unique to vapes. The industry has come a long way in its ability to combine cannabinoids and terpenoids in specific concentrations that target desired results. I see this as the future of Cannabis consumption for those looking to avoid exposing the lungs to the products of combustion. Collectively your team has spent 10 years behind bars because of Cannabis. How important do you feel expungement is for society as a whole? Do you think federal legalization is the only answer? It is a complicated question. Quite simply we can say that possession of Cannabis is a charge that should go away. Period. Expungement is complex. Some argue that in the wake of decriminalization in 2008, followed by legalization for medical in 2012 and adult-use in 2016, those incarcerated for offenses that are now legal should be immediately released and have their records expunged. Opponents argue that in reality, it SEED AND CORE was rare for anyone to be sent to jail for ‘simple CANNABIS MUSEUM possession’ of marijuana in and of itself – but rather 401A CENTRE ST. that marijuana arrests were ordinarily secondary to BOSTON, MA 02130 another crime. Massachusetts currently has a process SEEDYOURHEAD.COM for individuals seeking to have drug possession @SEEDYOURHEAD offenses expunged on a case-by-case basis, but the CORECANNABIS.ORG process can be arduous. Ultimately, it is a question of @CORECANNABISMUSEUM prioritizing this issue and diverting resources to those (617) 553-5922 impacted by the inherent injustices at issue.
We see the nascent Cannabis industry as an opportunity to disrupt the status quo, shaking off the good ol’ boys and creating an industry that reflects equality – the same equality among people that becomes immediately apparent when consuming Cannabis.
As to federal legalization, that’s another complex problem. We believe that Cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance is insanity. Particularly considering Marinol, a single compound synthetic THC product, is a Schedule III. But federal legalization potentially invokes federal and FDA regulation that could attempt to tie up the market and cause access issues for consumers. There are a lot of unknowns.
You’re the first of its kind here to have a museum dedicated to social justice and a Cannabis dispensary. What do you think the response will be from people once they can visually see in an exhibit how people have been affected by the drug war? Seed is co-located with the Core Social Justice Cannabis Museum, where guests are invited to engage with the insanity and inequity of drug policy in America through a series of changing exhibits.
When can our readers visit the Seed museum and dispensary? And where can we direct them to follow your updates? Our orange doors opened March 6. We look forward to welcoming anyone over 21. Guests can come in and shop a variety of products with the assistance of a knowledgeable Seed purveyor, or order on-line in advance through our website. Museum entry is free and open to all guests. To stay up to date with us, we suggest subscribing to our social media channels and website.

DEEP SKUNKY TECHNICOLOR FIREWORKS MAKE FOR A RICH AND TASTY POWERHOUSE FLOWER.
First things first: It’s D-O-G, not D-A-W-G. That’s lesson one when talking about the legacy, the genetics, the strains and the story behind Massachusetts native and cultivation icon Greg “Chemdog” Krzanowski. So while there may be many Dawgs, there’s only one Chemdog. Wait, nevermind. There can technically be three dogs. Provided we’re talking about 3 Dog Giesel, the first widely available flower from Krzanowski’s longawaited Chemdog-grown and Chemdogpicked flower for the legal Cannabis market – found only at Canna Provisions in the Berkshires and the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts. And of all the hand-picked genetics the Director of Cultivation chose for the exciting launch run, this particular one has a special place in the legendary cultivator’s heart. “This is an exclusive strain to Canna Provisions. It originated from my pal at Sherpa Seeds out of Vermont, and we are the only ones with them,” Chemdog says proudly. For the cultivators and growers: Chem’s pal used an Original Chem Diesel cut from back in the day crossed with a Tres Dawg male, and got some seeds. That yielded a male, which was crossed with Chemdog’s made-bymistake, clone-only Giesel (itself a cross of Mass Super Skunk x Original Chem D). The crossing of Original Chem Diesel x Tres Dawg x Giesel are the three Chemdog lines coming together for 3 Dog Giesel. For consumers and flavor chasers: Expect a dominant flavor profile of citrus and orange peel leading the front, with a lot of deep skunky technicolor fireworks making for a rich and tasty powerhouse flower. Take it from the man himself. “I love this flavor,” says Chem with a beam of pride. “It’s a potent one, definitely a good high and it gives me a dense cerebral couchlock and body effect. This has only been run a few times, and more experienced customers should appreciate the entire experience, from taste to heavy effects.” For the novice or canna-curious, through to the seasoned smoker looking for a potent high featuring a combination of classic THC levels and a rich Canna Provisions Group terpene profile, 3 Berkshires Location 200 Housatonic St., Lee, MA Dog Giesel is the CannaProvisionsGroup.com brassy trumpet@cannaprovisionsgroup call announcing that finally, legal Pioneer Valley Location 380 Dwight St. Holyoke, MA Chemdog Cannabis is at last available CannaProvisionsGroup.com @cannaprovisionsholyoke to the masses.

“Using wizard-like techniques, Deppe has reinvented the wheel when it comes to fuming with his breathtaking Hologram series.” Can you shed some light on how you brought a scientific approach to the glass pipe industry? How do you concoct some of these mind-melting designs? With the immense love for Cannabis and hash that I have, I am always searching for a better way to enjoy the two. I nerd out on things hard and am always trying to create a more enjoyable experience for myself. It’s a lot of experimenting – by seeing what’s out there in different facets of nature, engines and technology – amongst many other things. As water acts with a mind of its own and wants to do certain things, we incorporate its natural flow state into our pieces. Overall, this provides a very high-quality function and flow for our pipes. When coming up with concepts for the incredible Hologram series, where do you draw inspiration? Over the years, there have been many transformative universal messages that I have received. We are constantly searching for ways to tell folklore stories through our glass that have a deeper meaning. In collaboration with our in-house artist Max McNett and sandblast expert Erin Bohn, we work together to bring the industry some of the most innovative glass art imaginable. Our skilled and artistic staff often have very imaginative ideas that end up projected into concepts for a hologram series. The unique relationship shared between our artisan glass blowers helps us work together and generate an infinite amount of ideas. With our up-and-coming Catalyst series, we depicted the classic Stoned Ape theory. This thesis touches on monkeys eating mushrooms in the savannah, where they furthered the evolutionary process by altering their prefrontal cortex. Our Strange Deities, like our other series, are heavily influenced by space-like objects, as well as crop circles. I see that your company is experimenting with glassware and laser-etching of wood. What new expansions do you see Mothership Glass expanding into in the future? We will be getting into some home decor, including intricate coffee tables and chandeliers that will tie together your sophisticated sesh table and connoisseur ambiance. One day, we hope to have the rooms in your house decked out with an enlightened style, matched by the works of art that we offer.

enjoyed making them, because “donuts make people happy.” During this time, he decided to rent out a section of his garage so that his friend could build a small glass studio, with the promise that the friend would teach him to blow glass.

It wasn’t long before he started to get the hang of it and decided to try and make his first Donut Bowl. While selling his pieces of glass to local headshops, he met his girlfriend Sarah Marblesbee, who was working as a manager at one of the stores. That was 10 years ago. They now share a studio in Portland where she also blows her own glass pipes, as well as adding her business degree and background to his creativity and workaholic style. 3 GENERATIONS OF GLASS BLOWERS A FAMILY BUSINESS
Mike Miller learned how to create glass art from his father while they were following Rainbow Festivals. Mike’s dad, a glassblower known as “Capt,” bought a school bus in 1995, loaded his five kids into it and started teaching them the trade, while also selling glass pieces at different musical events.
Mike tells Leaf Nation, “I was blowing and selling glass before I knew how to read, and teaching people how to blow glass by age 13.” After converting his home garage into a glass studio, Mike and his girlfriend Hanna (@sirenglass), plus three other glassblowers now make pieces for the store and for online sales. Mike’s dad, who no longer blows glass due to health issues, is often at the studio watching Mike and his oldest son creating glass art with pride. For the past five years, Mike has organized glass blowing demonstrations at events such as the Community Bonfire. He’s a licensed Maine caregiver and operates the Maine Daze Smoke Shop in Portland. “It’s all about providing for my family and helping people. It’s our family business.”

Newly stocking the shelves of Maine dispensaries, the famed extract artists Mission Hill have revealed a new name and customer base for their fantastic products. I was fortunate enough to gather some terps and decided to review their superb Sundae Driver live rosin – a cross of Fruity Pebbles x Grape Pie first pull. This is absolutely the finest live rosin you can obtain and this onegram sample was labeled as 90u. Mission and Company’s luxurious and creative packaging definitely stands out. Bursting with scents of ice cream, grape punch and blueberry as you open the jar, you can’t help but get giddy and salivate because it smells so delicious. Lavender is another scent that comes to mind with this one – bringing me back to the days of smoking old school Purps. Not only does it smell fantastic, it tastes 10 times better – treating your tastebuds to an orchestra of complex, full-toned flavors of fruity desserts. Tasting so similar to the smell, I was able to close my eyes and reminisce of drinking a smoothie or eating a blueberry muffin. And now for the trifecta: scent, flavor and potency. After a few more dabs, this rosin totally took control of my day and brought me to a really serene place. Just the terpene profile alone provided an onset of therapeutic, happy and relaxing effects. With less CBD than the other topicals in the bundle, this is meant to be used on large surface areas as a lotion. The lavender is calming, relaxing and great for daily use on any dry skin. This is a product that you take out for anything and everything – a go-to when you’re on-the-go!
CBD Mint Massage Balm (50MG CBD)
As a girl who is constantly on-the-go, I stopped by the Irie Bliss Wellness shop in Weymouth, Mass. to get my hands on a new travel-size topical. Now, I have tons of lotions, salves and balms, but none that are small and easy to carry around. Imagine my joy when I found the Wanderer’s Bundle: Four different, 5ml salves that work for a wide range of ailments, and a bonus pocket balm with 50mg CBD that works wonders for lips. This $60 bundle was a great value and perfect for my traveling needs.

Thick and oily balm with a subtle mint scent that does not overpower. It does give the minty zing that you would expect, but also stays grounded. With active ingredients like peppermint and eucalyptus, this balm can be good for acne and can greatly reduce swelling. However, an oily salve can leave behind residue which can clog pores – so it is important that you wipe away any excess, and if you have sensitive skin, do not apply directly to the face.
CBD Healing Salve (50MG CBD)
A trio of menthol, peppermint and wintergreen, this salve’s smell will clear your sinuses and help to relieve all sorts of inflammatory conditions. Featuring Camphor oil (derived from the wood of the Camphor tree), this medicinal topical can be used to relieve chest congestion or apply anywhere on the body to relieve pain, irritation and even itching. Definitely an impressive salve to have in your apothecary and my personal favorite of the bundle because of its effectiveness – the ingredients complement each other perfectly and powerfully.
CBD Sports Balm (65MG CBD)

The strongest topical of the whole bundle – designed for tired and sore, muscles and joints. Irie Bliss gives an extra CBD punch to this balm to make sure you get the benefits that you need. After yoga or a long run, apply directly to the affected area and rub in thoroughly. The frankincense oil gives a pleasant earthy scent and can also provide many useful benefits, as it is known as the “King of Oils.” Studies show frankincense can even regenerate new skin cells!

American Pipe Dreams When it comes to glass smokeware, it doesn’t get much more old school than Jerome Baker Designs. JBD helped to establish the modern glass industry and became the largest bong producer in the world … that is, until Operation Pipe Dreams caused the company to go up in smoke. Now, nearly 20 years later, they’ve risen from the ashes to reclaim their place of prominence in the glass game. PYREX PIONEERS The Jerome Baker story begins, unsurprisingly, in the parking lot of a Dead show in Massachusetts in July 1989. It was there that a college student from Miami named Jason Harris met a hippie pipe maker from Eugene, Oregon named Bob Snodgrass. Known as the Godfather of Glass, Snodgrass invented two groundbreaking glassblowing techniques: fuming (aka color-changing glass) and the “pushed-in bowl.” His individualism and ingenuity would inspire and influence all those to follow.

“There was just some magical attraction to Bob—he’s just that kind of being,” Harris says. “He was the coolest dude I’d ever met. I just wanted to be like him instantly.” After graduating in 1991, Harris enrolled in the art program at the University of Oregon, moved out to Eugene and reached out to Snodgrass. In the months that followed, Harris saved his money, bought a torch, and began studying under Snodgrass as one of only 10 apprentices. “There was an energy in the air surrounding that scene at the time,” he recalls fondly. “It was magical.” In 1993, Harris and fellow apprentice Chris Shave (founder of Jah Creations Glass) started working together—first in a small garage down the street from Snodgrass, then in a larger studio with another fellow student, Dan K. It was Dan who introduced the group to the big Carlisle CC Burner torch and heavy wall glass, as well as the “wrap and rake” technique—all of which were game-changers for the budding industry. Harris and Shave sold their pipes on the Dead tour, as well as at headshops in New York. To set himself apart and earn more money, Harris began making bongs rather than pipes—a technique he learned from Snoddy’s top student, Cameron Tower. He also took advantage of his mom’s flight attendant privileges to fly around the world and study glass art—working at glass shops in Italy, Germany, and even as far as India.
Among those caught up in the dragnet was famed Cannabis comedian Tommy Chong, whose companies Chong Glass Works and Nice Dreams had been entrapped by undercover agents into selling a bong across state lines.

He also took courses at the esteemed Pilchuck glass school in Seattle, where he continued to hone his skills and expand his horizons. Then in 1995, he and partner Jordan Schefter formed their own company, which Harris decided to call Jerome Baker Designs—“Jerome,” an homage to Jerry Garcia who had recently died, and “Baker,” as in someone who gets “baked.” “I wanted to have a brand name that everybody could get behind—something besides just my own name.” One of JBD’s trademark styles was the Mothership—an orb-like base with a long shaft and a “snap and pull” downstem (a flared tube with a rubber seal that you pull out to carb)—an idea they borrowed from the Graffix bongs of the time. Unlike heady pieces, in which individual artists create unique works of art, JBD focused on production pieces, with various artists in their shop crafting different components and combining them in assembly-line fashion. This proved highly successful: By 1999, they’d become the largest smokeware company in the world—employing 70 glassblowers and earning $4 million a year.

true and I can admit it. I do it a lot. I mean, not out loud so much … well OK, out loud. But at least I’m hyperconscious about maintaining the flailing arms to conceal any evidence of my attempt to reign victorious in the current internal debate. But doesn’t everyone respond to those nagging inner voices with some form of discourse? I mean, it is part of being human to socially interact whether it is with a person, a pet, or a volleyball with palm shoots for hair named Hanes. Wait, what I meant was Wilson. Hanes was his other friend. And by nagging, I mean it never stops. The conjecture feels like a perpetual flow, with the impatient expectation of logical responses. Because if you’re a critical thinker or even someone who questions the meaning of your existence, you’re hardwired to answer reasonable inquiries – whether or not they’re self-provoked. You can only ignore yourself for so long. They say that there are three necessities in life to survive: food, water and companionship. And in these times of fewer and fewer options for companions, sometimes you’ve got to turn to yourself for a good chat. And I’m my own bestie – especially on those Saturday mornings that begin with a dab of Green Queen and a cup of coffee. Bam! Me, Myself and Irene are off to a roaring start, gossiping it up while the eggs get fried, the lawn gets mowed, and the Stoney Baloney gets wrote. First, there’s the voice who offers advice, then the one who loves to criticize, followed by the one who offers condolence, etc. Of course, as I continue to work on the royal “we” through self-care, the rebuts are often careful considerations for the emotional, sensitive myself. Except for the times when I feel like being a brat. But let’s not bring him into it. Hey, I’ve gotta go. I’m receiving a butt dial from me.
