across the amazing Pacific Northwest! I hope you’ve gotten a chance to enjoy the outdoors, the clean air and water we all cherish, and the opportunity to share time with loved ones. For me, the summer is always like a blink and it’s gone, but always full of good memories. Here’s to a warm and festive September, and hopefully as fall settles in, our national mindset can take a big breath of chill. And hopefully a toke. What really stands out to me from this summer is our country’s battle against hate. So I chose to use this space to share my thoughts, instead of talking about how great this issue is [don’t worry, it’s awesome]. So here are my two cents: Hatred, racism and bigotry have no place in our country, and as a Cannabis community we need to be vocal about social injustice. Anyone who has smoked pot prior to legalization knows what it feels like to live in fear for a choice. Those being targeted by hate groups don’t have the luxury of choosing their skin color, sexual identity or religion the way we chose to smoke pot before it was legal. The Cannabis community is diverse and covers all walks of life, and we can send a message to the world by leading with love — Cannabis is safer than hate. This message also works against prohibitionists. Earlier in the month, I was told that I was endangering families smoking a bowl in a music and bar district in Bellingham, Wash., while others around smoked cigarettes and drank heavily. A simple smile, a peaceful offering of information, and a parting message of “marijuana is safer” can be enough to change a mind, and a choice that might lead someone to pick up a pipe and let go of fear, hatred or misinformation. Further, I want to state my belief that using the first amendment defense to spread messages of hate is not acceptable in our democratic society. As an independent publisher, I have followed the free speech arguments carefully, and have come to a simple conclusion. We must be accountable for our words as well as our actions, and as a country we need to demand this from our citizens and our leaders. We must not let hatred win. Since Cannabis first came into my life, I have always believed it had the power to change the world. And this is a direct way for us as users of a safer plant to spread truth, light and as Bob Marley said, an herb “for the healing of the nation.” Thanks for reading the Leaf, and sharing our hard work with those who need enlightenment about the plant we all love. —Wes Abney

Trump Calls New Hampshire A ‘Drug-Infested Den’ Both of New Hampshire’s U.S. Senators lashed out at Donald Trump on Aug. 3 after it was revealed that Trump had called the Granite State “a drug-infested den” during a telephone call with the president of Mexico. “I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den,” Trump said to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, reports Greg Miller at The Washington Post. The Post got transcripts of Trump’s calls to several world leaders. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Sen. Maggie Hassan, both Democrats, were angered at Trump’s boorish characterization of the opioid crisis in
their state. Sen. Hassan called Trump’s comments “disgusting,” reports the BBC. “@realDonaldTrump’s comments about New Hampshire are disgusting. As he knows, NH and states across America have a substance misuse crisis,” Hassan wrote on Twitter. “Instead of insulting people in the throes of addiction, @POTUS needs to work across party lines to actually stem the tide of this crisis,” Hassan wrote. Republican Governor Chris Sununu quickly responded. He issued a statement simply saying, “Mr. Trump is wrong. It’s disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer.”
Oregon Marijuana Demand SkyrocketED For Solar Eclipse Oregonians had one of the best views of the recent total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. About a million people visited the state in order to view it — and it seems many of them wanted to buy legal weed during their visits. Local news stations reported Oregon Cannabis dispensaries saw a spike in sales ahead of the eclipse. “Tourism already to Oregon, plus an eclipse, is doubling up,” Mike Drevecky, an employee at the Little Amsterdam Wellness Center in Portland, told The News Review. “And that means customers are doubling in our doors. I mean, we’re swamped this morning alone.”

Weedmaps Brings Pro-Cannabis Billboards To Michigan Weedmaps, the “where to find marijuana” app, is bringing pro-Cannabis billboards to Michigan during an ongoing petition drive trying to put marijuana legalization on the 2018 state ballot. The “technology and marijuana discovery service,” based in California, is buying 22 pro-pot billboards in the Lansing area, 12 more in Ann Arbor and six in Metro Detroit as part of its campaign, also targeting six other states plus Canada, reports The Detroit News. The billboards feature statistics showing unchanged youth use, increased tax revenue, theft reductions and other positive developments in states that have already legalized. Five different versions
are running in Michigan, which is currently creating and implementing new medical marijuana rules. Weedmaps says the goal is “to provide communities with credible, verifiable facts about the benefits of legal marijuana.” “As Michigan residents consider a marijuana legalization petition, and changes to dispensary regulatory requirements go into effect throughout the state, there is a lot of marijuana misinformation out there,” a Weedmaps spokesman told The News. “So we think it’s important to share and talk about the benefits, underpinned by research, regarding marijuana. We want Michiganders to be informed.”

why Seattle Hempfest is still needed NOW IN ITS 26TH YEAR, SEATTLE HEMPFEST, THE LARGEST POT RALLY IN THE WORLD, BROUGHT IN SPEAKERS, ATTENDEES AND VENDORS FROM NEAR AND FAR. BUT SOME CRITICS SAY THE DAYS OF A POT RALLY IN A LEGAL STATE ARE PAST ITS PRIME. THOSE FOLK FEEL WE SHOULD MOVE TOWARD SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CELEBRATION OF THE CANNABIS PLANT, RATHER THAN PROTESTING. BUT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW REASONS WHY SEATTLE HEMPFEST REMAINS RELEVANT EVEN IN OUR LEGALIZED STATE. Cannabis is federally illegal as a Schedule I Controlled Substance, meaning the substance is said to have no medicinal uses. Washington state’s legal retail Cannabis industry has destroyed the ability of medical patients to adequately secure the organic, medical-grade strains and oils they may require to treat and manage the symptoms of their diseases. Washington is also the only legal adult-use Cannabis state that does not allow home grows. For medical patients, there has been a drastic reduction in the amounts that a patient can grow or possess. Patients who choose to be vulnerable and add their names to the state registry can grow a limited number of plants and give up privacy. How about those who live in public housing or rent from those who do not permit marijuana use on site? There are no consumption protections for these people. There are no sanctioned public, legal consumptions areas, lounges or clubs to safely enable tourists or Cannabis users to enjoy their Cannabis. Parents continue to fear government intervention, as state agencies like Child Protective Services continue to work under outdated guidelines in a legal Cannabis environment. Seattle Hempfest has been generating money and awareness for Americans serving excessive prison time for Cannabis and non-violent drug charges. There continues to be a need for a pot rally in states where retail consumers have made progress but where patients, home growers, renters, those in public housing, tourists, parents and those still imprisoned on Cannabis charges are still left behind in the push for actual legalization. Until these issues are addressed, there will always be a need for Hempfest. Myrtle Edwards Park | Seattle | Aug. 18-20, 2017 Support Seattle Hempfest at Hempfest.org

Rising local artists who love Cannabis discuss their music, strains of choice and what the music industry is really like.
22/sept. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
Northwest hip-hop has been a smoldering hotbed for the last decade. Independent artists have truly paved the way for the new generation of Seattle rap. For the most part, only our region has tasted the sweet sounds that resonate in the Pacific Northwest. Much like Cannabis and local craft beer, our region has experienced great home grown products that the rest of the nation has yet to discover. Over the last seven years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with and covering the most promising talents this region has to offer. I wanted to sit down with some of the hottest up and coming local MCs and chop it up with them about music, Cannabis and how they intersect. We arranged private smoke sessions where our team could chill and talk music together. Sitting not too far from Rainier Brewing Company, we grabbed two half ounces of Seattle’s Private Reserve from Diego Pellicer to really set the tone. As we smoked, we talked industry hustle, Cannabis and making music. Get to know the names of Seattle’s hottest new hip-hop artists and their weed habits. These cats will out-smoke you, out-rap you and most importantly, out-work you.

@Gifted_Gab Gifted Gab has become one of the most prolific rappers to emerge from Seattle. She’s toured the country, partnered with Swisher Sweets and been written about in Time magazine. How long you been making music? Hella. For a long time. For hella! I’m just a music motherfucker you know. How does Cannabis intersect with your creative process? I mean it’s the only thing that works with my creative process. Other than just my own thoughts, but the Cannabis just takes it to another level. There’s also the culture within the weed, not just smoking it. What’s your preferred way to smoke? Blunts. Maybe sprinkle some hash in there. Usually just blunts. What’s your favorite strain? Dutch Treat. Then that Pineapple Haze from Fire Bros. Man, they have the best Pineapple Haze on the planet. If you’ve never had that, go get that. It’s a real high sativa. I like that. Do you buy from rec stores? Not really. I come from the medical world, you know what I’m saying? I still have those connects. If I want some shit they ain’t got, I’ll go to the store. It’s usually a ‘hold me over’ purchase. I’ll go get that on my way to get my other weed. What is one thing you want people to know about Gifted Gab? I’m multi-faceted. I’m a renaissance woman. Your prefer rapping or singing? I don’t really prefer either over the other. I grew up in the church, you know? And when you grow up in the black church, you didn’t really have a choice if you want to sing, so I grew up singing. It’s more fun to make R&B songs. The writing process for making ballads and such. I like the essence of it, R&B and Soul. I don’t like to do too much. But when I’m rapping I can say whatever I want. Do you prefer to smoke before, during or after a show? Man, you know the way the laws have changed, they’ve really fucked it up. You can’t smoke on stage like that anymore! I definitely get a lot of weed thrown at me during shows being known as a mad pothead. I definitely smoke before shows but more so afterwards. I prepare pretty tough so I’m ready to rock a show at any point. Favorite stoner movie? “How High.” I love Method Man. Of course “Half Baked.” There’s many. “Grandma’s Boy,” that’s the shit. “How High,” would definitely be number one.
Gifted Gab 24/sept. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
I DEFINITELY GET A LOT OF WEED THROWN AT ME DURING SHOWS BEING KNOWN AS A MAD POTHEAD.
Do you have any projects coming up? I’m working on a project right now but I don’t want to put a release date on it yet. The project is produced by Antwan Vision. He’s producing the whole thing. And then I’m doing a bunch of stuff with people I meet on the internet and through touring. Anything else? I also do art, “Gab Did It” check that out. DM me on Instagram for that!
@kungfoogrip_ Kung Foo Grip is a Seattle duo known for woke music and lit performances. Comprised of Greg Cypher and Eff Is H, the group is classic hip-hop meets the sonic demands of today. What do you represent? Greg: Seattle hip-hop. Good music. How long have you guys been making music? Eff: Nine years as a group. Way before that as solo artists making music. When did you start smoking weed? Greg: 13. Eff: 14. Greg: I didn’t start smoking weed regularly till like 17 or 18. What’s your preferred way to smoke? Greg: Spliffs and blunts. Eff: Spliffs very much. A lot of people don’t really rock with the spliff. It started as a way to conserve the weed but after a while it just became what I dug. Favorite stoner movie? Greg: “Half Baked.” Eff: “Jacob’s Ladder.” How does weed intersect with your creative process? Eff: I tend to write with a little bit of caffeine and a spliff rolled up. It’s just what I feel comfortable with. Not reliant but definitely comfortable to get things going. Greg: I smoke a lot of sativa strains. So that like definitely gets me creative and in the mood. It’s like “boom,” things are popping in my head left and right. Start putting words to the paper. Do you prefer to smoke before a show, during a show or after a show? Greg: Smoke the entire show. Eff: The entire show but I definitely go harder after I perform. Greg: Yeah you have to stay hydrated up on stage. What’s one thing people should know about Kung Foo Grip? Eff: That we’re the best around. Really. Truly. The new project we got coming out is so good. It’s going to bring tears to eyes. Blood, sweat and tears went into making it. People will be dropping to their knees. Really, it’s that life changing shit. You know we’re out here to change people’s lives, hopefully some for the better but change them nevertheless. Greg: Yeah...what he said. Eff: The best shit. The best shit. It’s not a joke, it’s not a game. Greg: Yeah, and smoke weed every day bro. What’s the music dropping? Eff: We have a video coming. It’s coming soon, maybe next month but stay tuned. Everything will be announced shortly. Greg: It’s coming, real soon. Where can we find your music? Eff: Kfgmusic.com you can find everything your heart could desire. Greg: Yeah go check that!

Yodi Mac @yodimac Yodi Mac is a new rapper to the Tacoma area. Hailing from Coeur d’Alene, the stony rapper has already performed in front of thousands, opening for major artists all over Washington. What’s one thing you want people to know about Yodi Mac? I fuck with weed and positivity. What music do you have coming out? I just dropped the video to “Bag It All Up.” I have a few other videos dropping soon. Running some single releases for a while. I may drop the video to “40,025 Minutes,” but I don’t know just yet. How does weed intersect with your creative process? I mean I’m usually high, so it’s just already a part of it. I have a lot of weed in my music. It’s a heavy influence in the music. Selling weed beforehand and now I sell weed legally. A lot of my fans are in that same area. Weed is a common thing amongst my crowd. What’s your favorite strain? Willies Wonder Kush. You smoke that yet? I was skeptical at first, but the first time I smoked it I was way too high. What is your favorite way to smoke? Blunts with Swishers. I really prefer Swishers because of the process. I like to break it down and roll it. Love the way they smoke. When do you like to smoke during a show? Smoke before and after always. I’ll smoke during, if the energy is right. What is your favorite stoner movie? “How High.” Anything else you want people to know about Yodi Mac? Come fuck with 25Trees. I’m about to start a podcast with 25Trees productions Two Five Trees Productions where I connect our audience to new products and my experience with them. Eventually I want to incorporate local musicians, artists and Cannabis industry people to promote what they’re doing. 25Trees productions. I got a lot of other dope stuff with them on the way. More music videos like I said — stay tuned!
A LOT OF MY FANS ARE IN THAT SAME AREA. WEED IS A COMMON THING AMONGST MY CROWD.

@webbwavvy WebbWavvy has made a name as a performer, solo artist and member of one of the most live crews in Seattle called Fine Malt Lyrics. Do you buy weed from the store or on the streets? I buy a little bit of both. Mostly from the dispensary, you know. What catches your eye about Cannabis? It’s got to look good. It’s got to smell good. I don’t always pay attention to a certain brand. It may be something new or a deal. The eye appeal is the real key. When did you start smoking weed? Ten years ago. I started when I was 16. When I stopped playing sports, I started smoking. I was rapping at 17. How does weed fit into your creative process for making music? I got to have weed. But I smoke every day, you know? Without weed, would the music ever get done? It’s just a part of the daily process. I got to have weed, it’s such a natural thing at this point. What do you want people to get from your music? I do a little bit of everything. I like to keep my music as a variety. Not all of my projects have to necessarily sound the same. I give them whatever I’ve been feeling. Wherever my mood’s been. My music is mood-based. I’ve been in an angry mood lately, so there’s been a lot of bars in there lately. What is one thing you want people to get from your music? It’s fire. It’s hot. It’s all relatable, it’s good music. I’m good at what I do. When do you like to smoke during a show? Before just to keep cool, during is dope and after is necessary. Favorite stoner movie? “How High,” of course. That’s definitely the number one for me. Favorite strain of weed? OG Kush. Probably been smoking that a lot recently but I’ve been smoking (a lot) lately.

JARAMIE & JESSICA THOMAS Siblings, Medical Certified Consultants & Budtenders
WHEN DID YOU FIRST EXPERIENCE CANNABIS?
HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCTS?
Jaramie: I first started smoking at 15, my father and brother both smoked, so I
Jaramie: It’s all about asking questions. I start out with the basics to
started too, and it’s been a big part of my life ever since then. I’ve always been into pot — and thought it was much better than alcohol or other drugs.
Jessica: Cannabis came into my life four years ago when Jaramie opened Grass-
roots [a medical collective]. That was my first time being involved in the industry. I got to learn from a strictly medical standpoint, and where before I had been pretty anti-Cannabis, I got to learn all the medicinal ways Cannabis helps people, which frankly blew my mind.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART? Jaramie: I owned a shop and budtended in it for two years, and one year here at
Satori. My favorite part was in the medical days, when you could focus more on patients and have better prices and higher doses. I really enjoy getting to know people and helping them connect with the best medicine possible.
Jessica: I’ve been a budtender for four years and at Satori for six months. My favor-
ite part hands-down is the people. There’s not many service industries where you can say you enjoy every customer interaction, but I couldn’t ask for better people. I have met so many wonderful people and have the common ground of Cannabis, it’s so comfortable talking and relating to them.
WHAT YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO CONSUME CANNABIS? Jaramie: I like smoking flower and I like edibles, in that order. I did dab for a couple
years, pretty solid, but after my fiancée passed, I got anxiety with PTSD, and dabs set it off, so I had to quit dabbing. So I like to hit pipes and bongs. I like filtered smoke or if I want to get wrecked, or for pain I do edibles — I feel those are best for pain treatment and sleeping.
find what they are looking for and then we talk about what they are treating, then sativas and indicas. Same as I did in medical. And if they are beginners, we have low-dose tinctures and capsules to control dosage and track what I recommend. And when starting with flower, I recommend the organic, lower-THC items. With experienced smokers, they know what they’re looking for, so I walk ’em through my opinions on the cleanest farms and show the farms I feel are worthy.
Jessica: Honestly, it comes down to talking to them. Being open.
When someone comes in, I ask what I can help them find, and I listen. If you really understand a person’s needs and study Cannabis strains, you can give them four or five options that really hit the key points for their needs.
WHY DO YOU LIKE WORKING AT YOUR STORE? Jaramie: Satori does a lot to ask us about the products and they care about the products we want to share with customers, and they do their best to keep good products in the store. They also make sure to have medically certified consultants on staff. My sister or I, one of us is always there, not only for knowledge but we actually care. When someone takes the time to listen about a family member or sick child, it means something. We’re not trying to sell them, I’m there to help inform the patient. Satori allows us to focus on the patient needs first.
Jessica: They see the passion we have to help people and that’s
Jessica: I personally like to vape. I have to be discrete, and it’s a comfortable thing
great. I really enjoy the atmosphere they’ve created by catering to a wide variety of people — not just one group. Anyone can come in and feel comfortable and welcome, and they take the medicine seriously. It’s wonderful to educate people on the medical use of Cannabis. It’s not just to get you high, and they do a great job serving the community.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STRAINS AND PRODUCTS?
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES WHEN YOU AREN’T BUDTENDING?
Jaramie: My favorite strains right now are Chem Cookies and White Urkel from
Jaramie: My main hobby is playing poker. I play high-limit and
in the home, and it’s a lot easier on the chest.
Subdued Excitement, I also really like the Platinum Kush and Freddy’s Kush from Freddy’s Fuego, and I really like the Emerald Jane’s lineup, especially the Emerald Cookies. My favorite organic farm is Eagle Tree and their AC/DC for a medicinal strain.
Jessica: Some of my fav’s are Doctor and Crook Cannabis, as well as Fine Detail Greenway, both located in Bellingham. Not only do they take pride in their quality, but knowing that they came from medical before and are family-oriented companies, they really stand out. My favorite strain, hands-down is the Fine Detail Greenway Salmonberry. The flavor is so unique. It’s everything you think of in a Salmonberry, and it’s a mellow and gentle high that’s long-lasting ... a feel-good-all-day strain.

no-limit poker tournaments. That and growing Cannabis are my two favorite hobbies. I am also trying to work with LCCB on setting up a medical consulting company ... a future project to help patients in the registry. I’m doing it right now for free as a hobby to help people and someday turn it into a business.
Jessica: I really enjoy time with family. We are very family-oriented,
which is why we work together very well. I spend time with my mom, and enjoy anything outdoors. Bellingham is beautiful. People should come give us a visit!

Kevin Smith Column # 26
Maverick filmmaker, actor, author and comic book writer Kevin Smith is best known for his hit movies Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl. He’s instantly recognizable as the iconic character Silent Bob that he played in many of his films.
Since so much of his work features characters who use Cannabis, it may surprise you to know that he didn’t start consuming the plant until 2009. Smith told MTV in 2011 that he credits Seth Rogen (whom he worked with on the film “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) with being the person who made him into a “stoner.” Smith said that he and Rogen smoked weed in the editing room while cutting the movie, and that it helped with creativity and getting “fear” out of the equation when it came to making creative decisions. In the interview, he credits Cannabis with aiding his productivity. Shortly after this interview, he told Thrillist that “I can count on one hand the amount of times I smoked weed from birth to age 38. At age 38, I worked with Seth Rogen. That changed everything. I was like, ‘this guy is a multi-tasker. He can do a zillion things at once and he is fucking blazed all the time. He gets along with everybody and he has got no stress in his life.’ The dude is just a zen pool of calm.” Smith also talked about how Cannabis has been medicinally beneficial to him: “I don’t drink. Some people have booze. Some people have medications. I don’t have any of that shit, but weed allows me to get out of my own fucking head and out of my ass, and relate to people better.” Fortunately, that’s not where this story ends for Smith. Like your friends here at Northwest Leaf, Smith is also on a mission to normalize Cannabis for the mainstream. “I am glad that I became a stoner late in life. Age 38. I was never a fucking stoner prior to age 38. Now, I am a fucking born-again stoner. Weed is not a ‘thing,’ really. It is not. Once Colorado and Washington were legal, everybody is like, ‘oh, it is not that big a deal.’ When I was a kid, it was like, ‘fucking just say no, and it’s evil, and, fucking, it will lead to crack cocaine,’ and shit.” In 2013, shortly after early legalization in Colorado and Washington, Smith appeared on Canadian television in Toronto on a breakfast show touting his newest film “Yoga Hosers.” The interviewer posed the question, “what’s the secret of how you get things done?” With a straight face, and clear language Smith told the host, “well, I’m a huge stoner … but a productive one.” He noted that he even likes to wake and bake and regularly enjoys a “THC-managed day.”
SOME PEOPLE HAVE BOOZE. SOME PEOPLE HAVE MEDICATIONS. I DON’T HAVE ANY OF THAT SHIT, BUT WEED ALLOWS ME TO GET OUT OF MY OWN FUCKING HEAD AND OUT OF MY ASS AND RELATE TO PEOPLE BETTER.”
The one-of-a-kind film director and iconic Silent Bob actor is not so quiet about how Cannabis helps his productivity

STRAIN OF THE MONTH By WES ABNEY | PHOTOS by

esmerizing citrus notes dance with dutchy-pine notes from this fruit forward slice of Orange Skunk grown by House of Cultivar. Like popping open a can of soda, Orange Skunk’s fizzy orange notes burst out of the jar, tickling the nose and tastebuds as intense flavors transport the mind to a bohemian orange grove full of dank. The buds are larger with a medium density that fits the bud structure, featuring foxtail tips that are perfect for pinching into a bowl. Light green with a smattering of red hairs, the outer edges of the bud are coated in trichomes, glistening in resinous layers that sparkle in a close look. With a lighter than air feeling and a pillowy fluffy texture, it’s easy to lose a few minutes just fingering the bud before smoking. The cure is perfect, preserved in the glass jars and with a light stickiness that lingers on the fingers. House of Cultivar puts a ton of heart and energy into the strains they bring to market, and the care is evident in every aspect of this strain. Ripping into a bowl delivers a mellow, subdued smoke that is extremely clean with only a light taste of citrus. Effects build instantly from deep within the lungs, spreading out in a warming wave of euphoria and mood-elevating bliss. The mind changes next, with a groovy timewarping happiness that enhances sound and colors, and complements the warming body high to make for an overall happy-go-lucky effect that will brighten up any day. Stop by one of the shops carrying House of Cultivar strains and check out the Orange Skunk and other tasty options like Chem Mint Cookies, one of the Northwest Leaf staff’s favorite!

CUTTING EDGE HOW FAIRWINDS MANUFACTURING CREATED THE MOST DIVERSE AND USEFUL LINE OF INFUSED CANNABIS PRODUCTS IN THE WORLD

In the intermingling sectors of medical and recreational Cannabis, mostandproducts In the intermingling sectors of medical recreational Cannabis, most products emphasize getting a user high — emphasize getting a user high — not how or why arearebeing consumed. notCannabinoids how or why Cannabinoids being consumed.
Founders Wendy and James Hull
Few companies focus on patient needs before the bottom line of sales, leaving medical and recreational users alike at a loss when trying to apply Cannabis to daily needs like sleep aids, energy blends or feminine products. Fairwinds Manufacturing is the exception to this trend, with a vibrant line of products that can fill a large portion of any medicine cabinet with Cannabis-derived products. “What I love about our products is the ability to open people’s eyes to Cannabis. When we hand them a product like the Flow topical or a non-psychoactive capsule, it opens their eyes to Cannabis as medicine,” said Wendy Hull, co-founder of Fairwinds. “People who would never try Cannabis before are learning and then sharing and it opens their minds. I call our products a gateway product — a gateway to what Cannabis can actually do for you.” The husband and wife team blends traditional Eastern medicine and values with scientific precision, which has taken a new step forward in the Fairwinds facility. Located in Vancouver, Wash., the Tier II facility acts as a producer and processor. The facility was designed from scratch by founder James Hull, a mechanical and electrical engineer and all-around whiz when it comes to HVAC, electrical and facility design and management. It’s no surprise that he did big things in his past career — James held a Top Secret security clear- “IT OPENS THEIR ance for the federal government and helped design EYES TO CANNABIS and build boat systems that are used by the Navy AS MEDICINE,” SEALs and other military applications, as well as SAID WENDY HULL, work on mega yachts in the private sector. “For the future of Cannabis as medicine, every- CO-FOUNDER. thing has to be standardized to protect the industry, from a pesticide and environmental standpoint to a controlled dosage and regulatory perspective,” James explained. “I didn’t come in from growing [pot] experience, I came in from technical experience. That’s why we have such a big focus on consistency. If this is a true medicine and the government wants to regulate it, there must be quality control. Our level of control and consistency matches from harvest to harvest, batch to batch and can prove with data our methods and model.” Marine design prioritizes efficiency, both for space and energy, and James applied that same mindset to his production facility. The entire operation is so efficient that only 11 employees run it, and that’s no small achievement. Continues pg. 42

has passed pesticide testing on every single batch. While Washington does ban certain pesticides but does not require testing, James insists on voluntarily testing every batch at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars per year, all to show the integrity and purity in their products. “When we started, the labs were a disaster and we had so much fluctuation, we bought our own HPLC testing equipment to run our own potency testing for in-house R&D,” James said. “We also pesticide-test every single batch and have never failed a single test. Our environmental controls are so precise that we don’t need chemicals. I haven’t missed a mark on this. It’s spot-on.”
THE POTENCY IS SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED BEYOND THE MILLIGRAM DOSING. IT’S THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECT OF THE CANNABIS AND THE HERBS THAT MAKES THIS SO VALUABLE, AS WELL AS THE FULL BLEND OF TERPENOIDS AND OTHER BENEFICIAL FACTORS, SAID MAX GOLDMAN, WHO MANAGES FAIRWINDS’ CHEMISTRY & EXTRACTION.
Once the flower is grown and cured, Max Goldman runs the chemistry department and extraction. Goldman spent two years living in a Buddhist commune in India studying Ayurveda medicine, which means the “Science of Life,” a 5,000-yearold system of health and disease that laid the foundation for modern Western medicine. “I integrate well-established potent extracts of herbs with thousands of years of proven use and then add Cannabis to them, and then we test and verify blends that can help benefit people,” he said. “Cannabis itself can’t deliver what the combination can deliver. And with our products, the potency is significantly enhanced beyond the milligram dosing. It’s the synergistic effect of the Cannabis and herbs and the full blend of terpenoids and other beneficial factors that makes this so valuable.”
The facility spends more annually on the more than 30 herbs used in blends than it does Cannabis, and the team also works extremely hard to maximize the benefits of the Cannabis plant. “This is a tribute to the plant and the history of Cannabis modernizing. Take our EmergenCBD product: it’s 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin C enhanced with Cannabis and Astragalus, a classic Chinese adaption tonic used in immune treatment and cancer treatment that is also known to improve the efficiency of chemotherapy,” co-founder James Hull explained. “It was the science side of Cannabis that brought me into Fairwinds.” The main extraction process is hydrocarbon for the flower, along with processing the post run along with stems, fresh leaves and the roots of the plant. This is what creates their full-spectrum extraction,
complete with all the medicinal elements like polysaccharides, alkaloids, waxes and Cannabinoids. With strains like the 25:1 CBD-dominant Omrita or the 2:1 Harle-Tsu, the strains become exceptionally valuable medicinally when full processed. Taking the Eastern medicine a step further, James and the team also work locally with patients and medical providers in the mainstream to provide data and in turn get more information back about how their products interact with patients, and to improve the formulas at every possible step. “We work with a team of doctors and it’s key because at the end of the day, they can’t work in a vacuum,” James said. “For this to be considered medicine for the government, the public and patients, it always is more effective, believable and credible with doctors standing behind it.” The full line of Fairwinds products can be seen at FairwindsManufacturing.com, where people can find retailers that carry specific products. With new research and lines coming from the facility each harvest, the future is bright for this incredibly driven team. “Our mission is to bring credibility and integrity to Cannabis and for people to be well and heal with our products,” Wendy said. “When you have success personally with Cannabis, it opens your mind and those around you to new possibilities. This was always the direction we wanted to go.”

I WAS NOT WELL AND WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS UP. Katie Z is alive and back to work thanks to Cannabis oil after a lifelong battle with painful Ehlers-Danlos syndrome What was your childhood like, and when did you first start realizing that you were dealing with illness and issues that were different from other kids?
I was always the one sick, getting hurt and having to sit on sidelines. I played sports, soccer, volleyball, you name it i played it, did marching band, trumpet and French horn in the Portland Youth Philharmonic. But I wasn’t able to participate as a kid fully, and we didn’t know why. We went to doctors and they thought it was growing pain. Through childhood, nobody connected the dots, they just said, “oh, it’s just Katie.” Did this continue to follow you as you grew up?
During prom, I passed out on my date because of pneumonia. I fell on the dance floor. I was so sick overall that they petitioned for me to get a tutor at home and I graduated a year ahead of my class.
What did you do after you graduated?
I got my first apartment at 17, moved out and tried to live life and get a job and go to school, but my plans didn’t work out as expected. In 2008, I got really, really sick, nonfunctional completely, and started having seizures, dropping to the floor, concussions. I was not well and we didn’t know what was up. What did the doctors say?
I finally went to the East Coast because I’d seen all doctors out West [who] didn’t know what it was, saying I was crazy and had anxiety. So I went to the East Coast and saw a renowned neurosurgeon, and in 15 minutes he said, “you’re not crazy, it’s a genetic disease called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.” I just cried, bawled, to know I was right that something was wrong. But at 22 my disease had already progressed so much he didn’t think there was a lot he could do. He wanted to do neck surgery immediately, but I didn’t want massive surgery like that after everything I’d been through. You’re also living with Intracranial Hypertension?
They call it the suicide disease, because no pain meds can touch it. It’s like shoving a high-pressure water hose in your skull, and Cannabis feels like putting cold water on a fire … it’s crazy how much it helps. My EDS affects the collagen in between joints and bone structure, so people experience dislocations and a wide variety of issues that basically make life unlivable. Did you feel like brain surgery was too much?
After undergoing brain surgery in July 2013
50/SEPT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
At that point, I’d already had knee surgery, gall bladder surgery, bladder stones, bladder surgery,
so I had been through a bit and I was done. I was wheelchair-bound, couldn’t walk, 220 pounds, not healthy in any way shape or form. He advised me to go back and get my green card, and there wasn’t a whole lot more they could do. Shortly after this, I had a seizure in an MRI machine. They gave me too many medications. My breathing stopped, and I ended up for a month in a nursing home after a 3-day coma. It was hell. It was awful. What was your mindset like at that time with everything you were going through?
I was suicidal. It was the most depressing thing I’d ever been through. I had very little will to live, was very depressed, with no hope, no opportunity. I couldn’t work, go to school or commit to anything. The disease limits you on what you can do and how much you want to try. EDS feels like being stabbed by a knife every day but you get used it. Did you get a medical card and did it help?
I got my green card in Washington and tried to navigate the system, but it was hard and I couldn’t find a grower or reliable meds. It was a nightmare, so I moved to Oregon, got on their program, found a grower and continued trying to live life while using Cannabis just as a smokable flower. What happened next?
July 2013 — that was brain surgery —the first one to put a shunt in to relieve spinal pressure. Terrifying. It was absolutely terrifying. A chance you can die, greater for someone in my space, but anyone risks going blind, deaf or death or stroke during brain surgery. So it’s pretty scary. But I was so sick, having vertigo so badly, I was desperate for relief,
In and out of hospitals constantly, Katie was depressed and felt hopeless.
WHEN PEOPLE LOOK AT US AS PEOPLE AND NOT AS A DOLLAR SIGN, THAT’S WHEN WE WILL SEE REAL CHANGE HAPPEN. and I had a morbid look on it that at least if I died I wouldn’t hurt anymore. The first surgery went OK, but then I got sick again. We learned the shunt was infected because of a surgeon issue, and I had three more surgeries in 36 days. They pulled my internal shunt and gave me an external one. I had a bag of fluid I had to carry around for 12 days with my $15,000 sterile brain straw that was actually sticking out of my head. How were you coping?
I was smoking pot at that point. I would leave the hospital, go off the floor with the bag, go outside into the streets and smoke weed, right there on the corner in my gown and everything. Cops would drive by but nobody would do anything to me. I had a posse of patients coming down, we were all sitting on the corner smoking in our hospital gowns with devices attached to us. It was quite a scene. What happened when you got out of the hospital?
Cannabis lets Tacoma patient Katie Z feel healthy again.
I almost lost my apartment and had to sell some stuff to raise funds. A guy wanted to buy my computer, and we started talking health and he said, “I make full extract Cannabis oil.” I was like, “you’re a weird Craigslist dude.” I legit laughed at him! I said, “I’ve seen the best doctors in the world, what could you offer me that they couldn’t.” He said, “a chance.”

WE MUST CONTINUE TO MAKE IT NORMAL. IT’S THE ONLY WAY WE CAN CHANGE THIS.
Did you take the chance and accept his offer for Cannabis oil?
At that time I had a Do Not Resuscitate order [DNR]. No more treatment — if I’m not breathing do not help — and he comes over and has me rip the DNR and says, “I’ll give you oil for free.” I was like, “I’ll try for a week and get another DNR when this doesn’t work.” But what ended up happening is I slept, which is really hard after brain surgery. It’s the only way to heal, and I slept, and I had more energy, and my appetite started coming back and my vision and hearing got better! I kept going down the road not knowing where it would lead, and I ended up getting better, having fewer seizures, no headaches and functioning at a higher level. That’s amazing! So you started on a treatment program?
It took a lot of oil. I started at 2-3 grams a day, and we worked on a specific blend for me. My doctors were blown away. I went from weekly appointments to being cleared to work. You still had a long path to recovery though, right?
I still had the shunt in at this point, and it was still causing problems. I had to learn to get my sense of direction back. When you wake up, you don’t think about how many steps it takes to get ready. To break down those tasks, I had to relearn those. My brain was so scrambled. Brush teeth, squeeze toothpaste, push cap back on, brush teeth for a minute, all those things that come in an instant were hard. I am still in recovery mode overall. I had knee surgery in November. Fourteen total surgeries including six brain operations. You’re a vocal patient advocate. How do you feel about our state’s MMJ system?
We don’t have one. That’s my problem. Without funding, I can’t do anything in Washington, and that’s honest truth. We need money and damn good lobbyists and a different political structure. Washington is still pretty corrupt and it’s unfortunate that we are in this place of fake legalization. I would like to see homegrown rights, removing the registry and real medicine in the recreational shops. Do the recreational stores meet your needs as a patient?
There’s nothing there for me. I could never afford to medicate through 502. If I have to take three grams a day, $180 a day in cost, that’s $5,400 a month with no guarantee it will work, and I also need edibles and topicals. My body needs Cannabis and I can’t stop taking it. What I really need is my own garden, but I don’t have the ability or time or money to do that, so it leaves me stuck. Do you feel that your life is dependent on Cannabis for health?
I’m reliant on oil every day. If I stopped oil for eight days, I’m in the ICU, having pre-seizure symptoms. Can’t sleep. Throwing up. That’s all it takes. I don’t know what joints will cause problems when I wake up. I’ve had 4 dislocated ribs upon waking, dislocated shoulder, hip. To keep me functional, it takes 16 plants every three months. I’m consuming more than most people, and if people took my 0.3 grams now, they would be floored, wouldn’t be able to move, but it’s what keeps me awake. Cannabis is the only treatment for me that works. Now I am able to return to work and my bosses [in the real estate business] are supportive. How does the fear of losing access play in your life?
I’m very grateful for my meds, but I wish access could come to others, and I still worry of course about running out. I have a few months’ supply left, and when I run out we hope and pray that more oil can be made. I worry about when money runs out, what am I gonna do then? Go from building a biz to staying at home with a caregiver. That’s not a life I want. I’d rather be living. What would your message be to other patients struggling to find relief?
I would encourage patients to continue talking about it, even with the risk of losing something. We must continue to make it normal. It’s the only way we can change this. I want to encourage anyone with EDS and others that it’s possible to get back to life. Life doesn’t have to end in suffering. Do you see Cannabis as something that can heal the world?

As a nation, we can end prohibition. Someone in an illegal state shouldn’t suffer and die when someone six hours away [doesn’t have to]. It’s completely barbaric. We can fix Washington but we need a lot of help. When people look at us as people and not as a dollar sign, that’s when we will see real change happen. We need people to stand up and share the truth about Cannabis as medicine.

NATIONAL MARIJUANA RETAIL & DISPENSARY EXPO
WHY ATTEND RADEXPO?
Most retail and dispensary owners don’t bother attending today’s cannabis trade shows for a variety of reasons: Admission prices are too high; many vendors are targeting cultivators; the public are allowed in; they lack focus; the same speakers talk about the same tired subjects at every event, etc.
RAD Expo is different. • RAD Expo is a business-only event that is 100% focused on the retail side of the industry.
• Attendance is free for licensed retail stores and dispensaries, as well as qualified applicants in states not yet issuing licenses. • All exhibitors will have products and services aimed at making retailers more profitable. • Our speakers will have serious retail and marketing experience. • It’s a national show featuring businesses from all over the U.S. • Portland, Oregon sits squarely in the middle of the biggest legal marijuana market in the world. (60 million people in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.)

COOKING HERB 75 RECIPES FOR THE MARLEY NATURAL LIFESTYLE
By CEDELLA MARLEY, 2017, 240 PAGES, $30.00
I
t’s hard to stand out in the current crop of Cannabis cookbooks — but “Cooking With Herb” has no problem doing exactly that. None of the others are written by Bob Marley’s daughter. Wellness guru Cedella Marley grew up in Jamaica experiencing the restorative and spiritual properties of ganja firsthand. Now, she shows readers how to incorporate Cannabis into their kitchens. The book invites readers into Cedella’s family kitchen for a taste of the vibrant Jamaican culture that is essential to her lifestyle. Each recipe features one of three herb infusions — canna-oil, cannabutter, or canna Vanilla Extract — to help readers cook party-friendly fare such as Grilled Jerk Chicken with Tamarind Barbecue Sauce and Sticky Sweet Potato Pudding, “the Marley Way.” While hearty, comforting Jamaican classic dishes are a vital component of the book, Cedella also highlights ways to incorporate Cannabis into a natural beauty and wellness regimen, with scrubs such as Pumpkin Face Scrub and an Aloe-Hemp Exfoliator. More than just a stellar collection of psychoactive recipes, Cooking With Herb is filled with practical information, beautiful photography and Cedella’s captivating stories of growing up with her famous father. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by [Cannabis] — for me, the sweet whiff was as common as the aroma of Mommy burning the ginger and curry together in coconut oil for one of her famous onepot stews,” Cedella writes in the introduction. “From the time Daddy was a small boy he always respected nature and the healing properties of plants.” Cedella is the CEO of Tuff Gong International, the record label founded by her father in 1965. She also directs the Bob Marley Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization.

Medusa Glass was founded by Jason Lydy, who began lampworking in 2015 after he was inspired by a good friend. While brainstorming ideas with a Pacific Northwest theme, he focused on the late summer local fruit, blackberries. Paired with a pot leaf, the ganja berry was born. Jason crafted each berry pendant pictured. The bite-sized mini rig and directional cab caps are a collaboration with Pablo Flux Glass.

GROWN INDOORS, THIS INDICA-DOMINANT STRAIN IS EXTRA STONEY AND CAN BE GOOD FOR HELPING WITH ANXIETY.
BEHIND THE STRAIN
SUNSET SHERBERT HOW SHE GROWS sensitive. The OG traits are right up in the forefront of
growth characteristics of the cut I’ve worked with. Slow to take off, she needs consistency in environment and delicacy and grace during transplant. But once in late veg, she becomes quite robust, producing medium-height, evenly spaced bushes that respond well to delicate and early tip topping. When worked consistently to space heads evenly, she puts off heavy bud sites of exquisite color and intoxicating smell. While I prefer the gassy, mossy terpenes that become dominant at the 70-day range and beyond, several farmers happily take her in the early 60s, accentuating the fruitier range of this exquisite cultivar.
BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT much like her parental heritage, “The Sherb” takes
on an even darker range of colors than the famed GSC. She produced large, more bulbous flower sites, making her bag appeal second to none. Perhaps only a few steps below the frostiness of GSC, the range of purples, reds and blues that flow across these plump blooms makes them a gorgeous site. The scent is nothing short of intoxicating. If you are a terpene hound, this variety is the one for you. Accept no imitation; if it doesn’t have a smell like nothing you’ve ever experienced (with Gelato being the exception) you haven’t encountered the real cut. Regardless of the harvest window you choose, Sherbert boasts an unmatched fruit punch, push pop, sweet red berry scent that somehow matches perfectly with any level of the earthy, mossy, kushy punch that it sits over. The taste is all deep, earthy kush with a spectrum of sweet fruit punch flavor entirely contingent on the harvest window you chose.
EFFECTS bright, happy and still functional. One of the
many features that wins my personal taste when compared with her popular parent, is that Sherb is like a silly, confident friend to your mind where GSC is a thunderous donkey punch. I enjoy being able to sample a few different tastes of the Sherb and still be able to stay away. The muted, moss, earth and kush terps explode on the inhale and quickly translate into a soft, sweet, woody berry exhale. An alert and giggly state sets in, allowing stress to melt down the back of the neck and out of the way.

SHERBERT BOASTS AN UNMATCHED FRUIT PUNCH, PUSH POP, SWEET RED BERRY SCENT THAT SOMEHOW MATCHES PERFECTLY WITH ANY LEVEL OF THE EARTHY, MOSSY, KUSHY PUNCH IT SITS OVER.
YIELD: Medium GENETICS: Pink Panties x Girl Scout Cookies (indica hybrid) LINEAGE:
Brought to us by combining the efforts of the all too infamous Cookie fam with a grower known as Mr. Sherbinski, this hybrid is unmistakeable. By combining the over-the-top frost and bud structure of the GSC with the beauty and remarkable smell the Pink Panties brings to the table leaves us with one of the most sought-after varieties on Earth.
QUICK HIT: Rare to find and requiring more attention to grow to its full potential, Sherbert is worth the effort. When given
the opportunity to flourish, she delivers large yields of truly exquisite flavors and colors and rarely finds her way out of the headstash.
