Beyond bongs, the industry has created an art scene that is enviable in all industries. Few of us drink beer from a custom goblet, but many people smoke out of $10,000+ dab rigs daily. To me, the most amazing part about glass is the fragility. Combining heat and borosilicate and the creative madness of a lampworker creates art pieces worthy of the greatest museums, but it can easily be snatched away with a simple tip or drop. I get extremely nervous holding high end glass, especially with today’s values. I had the anxious pleasure of dabbing out of a $50,000 set recently and couldn’t get over the value as I passed it around a session. Holding that value in hand, let alone smoking out of it, was simply amazing. As the Cannabis industry and culture continues to go mainstream, it is important to recognize all the elements that are driving it forward. Glass art is at the tip of the spear. This issue honors many amazing artists, styles and innovation. Without these beautiful works of art, the act of smoking weed or taking a dab would be a lot more bland. I want to thank all the artists out there making it happen, those we featured, and the up and coming dreamers imagining the next new way to enjoy our plant. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do, and are able to appreciate the amazing and one of a kind art we worked hard to capture.

ALABAMA MAN GETS 3 YEARS IN PRISON FOR GROWING 7 POT PLANTS IN HIS BACKYARD

n Alabama man will serve three years in prison for growing seven marijuana plants in his backyard. Limestone Circuit Judge Robert Baker

sentenced Robert Michael Musick, 40, of Athens, Alabama, to 10 years, three of which he must serve. Musick also got two years of probation for “drug trafficking,” reports The Athens News Courier. Musick’s first trial ended in a deadlocked jury and a mistrial. Just under two months later, he was re-tried and convicted. It all began in August 2015, when the Athens Police Department got a tip that Musick was growing Cannabis in his backyard. The officers seized seven marijuana plants from him, ranging from three to 10 feet tall. “When investigators checked the information, they could see the plants growing in the backyard,” Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said at the time. “The owner of the property refused our request to go in the backyard.” Investigators got a search warrant, Johnson said, and secured the area. Johnson estimated the seven plants would yield 15-20 pounds “if all the leaves were harvested.” Cops also found piles of Cannabis leaves, stems, “finished smoking product,” six pipes “with marijuana residue inside” and three large bongs “with residue.” The report also notes the presence of two marijuana grinders “with debris” and two jars of seeds, according to a complaint filed by Police Investigator Mickey Hart. After an initial mistrial due to a hung jury, a second trial began in November 2017. Jurors in that trial only took about two and a half hours to return a unanimous guilty verdict. Judge Baker sentenced Musick to 10 years under Alabama law. However, he split the sentence so that Musick is only required to serve three years in prison. The other seven years were suspended, pending the successful completion of two years’ probation. Musick was also fined $25,000, court records show. Three years is too harsh, according to attorney Phillips. “It’s definitely time for a change in the law,” she said. “No one should serve three years for growing marijuana in [their] backyard.”

laska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski and Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley in March introduced a measure within the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act to allow legal Cannabis businesses to use banks.

The measure would stop federal officials from punishing banks simply “because the depository institution provides or has provided financial services to a Cannabis-related legitimate business.” Many banks won’t do business with Cannabis growers, processors or sellers because marijuana is still a controlled substance under federal law. “While there are financial institutions which will bank marijuana-related businesses, many are uncertain about the state of the law,” Sen. Murkowski said. “The SAFE Banking Act is intended to resolve these uncertainties, not only for the benefit of the marijuana businesses but also for the states that regulate them.” “If that passes, it’s going to be a huge deal for us,” Lenin Pau, bookkeeper at Good AK Cannabis in Fairbanks said, reports U.S. News. “It’s going to lower a lot of expenses for us if we no longer have to hand-deliver cash to different locations.”

30+ DISPENSARIES NOW OPEN IN MARYLAND

ore than 30 medicinal Cannabis dispensaries are now open and operating throughout Maryland, a month after the state’s long-delayed medical marijuana program got off the ground, reports the Baltimore Sun.

There are 34 dispensaries operating in a dozen counties and in Baltimore. The state has approved 102 dispensaries. Maryland’s medical marijuana market is expected to be lucrative. That has, of course, inspired strong interested from medical marijuana companies. The state’s medical marijuana law allows Cannabis for any severe condition for which medical treatments have been ineffective. Nurse practitioners, dentists, podiatrists and nurse midwives can authorize its medicinal use, as can physicians.

CALIFORNIA LEGALIZATION LEAVES OUT NEEDIEST PATIENTS, ADVOCATES SAY

alifornia’s neediest medical marijuana patients are becoming unintended victims of Proposition 64, the 2016 voter initiative that legalized and regulated adult Cannabis use.

The law, which requires all marijuana to be tracked from seed to sale and subject to high taxes, doesn’t make clear whether cost-free donations are allowed under what has long been known as “compassion programs,” according to advocates. The gray area has forced numerous patient advocacy organizations, growers and dispensaries that donate to patients suffering from AIDS, cancer and other diseases to end their charity. Compassionate care programs at Sweetleaf Collective in San Francisco, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Santa Cruz, the San Leandro-based Educating Veterans About Cannabis, and Harborside dispensary in Oakland are among those put on hold since January when recreational sales began. “A lot of us compassion programs have been operating within the law, and now all of a sudden we are told we can no longer operate,” said Joseph Airone, the founder of Sweetleaf Collective in San Francisco. Every year since 1996, Sweetleaf Collective given as much as 100 pounds of Cannabis to cancer and HIV/AIDS patients. Sweetleaf and 20 other groups have formed the California Compassion Coalition, which is lobbying the state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control, along with the agriculture and health departments, to let organizations give Cannabis to those who benefit from it and can’t afford it.

ALASKA HOUSE TO FEDS: BUTT OUT OF OUR CANNABIS INDUSTRY

he Alaska House has asked the federal government to stay out of its state-authorized Cannabis industry.

The on March 19 voted 38-0 to pass a nonbonding resolution asking the federal government to respect Alaska’s authority to regulate Cannabis use, production and distribution, reports the Associated Press. The resolution also urges the feds to reconsider their listing of marijuana as a controlled substance.

I grew up with my parents growing Cannabis in Spokane, ever since I could remember I’ve always been around Cannabis. I used to trim as a child, so my introduction was very young, but I didn’t smoke until after high school because I was into sports. After I graduated I felt like I was adult enough to try and consume, and I fell in love with it.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A BUDTENDER?

I was going to Edmonds Community College for a degree in Energy Management, studying solar technology, hydro and wind power, when I saw that the technology wasn’t being utilized as it should be in this country. At the same time my best friend Josh, who I’ve know for 18 years, started a medical Cannabis store and asked if I wanted to be part of the family. Since then I have been budtending for Woodinville Quality Collective and The Kushery for a combined five years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A BUDTENDER?

My favorite part is the people! I do love looking at all the new products coming in, strain hunting and learning about genetics, and being able to pass on that knowledge. But my number one thing is treating people like a human being. I’m old and I remember borrowing a cup of sugar from the neighbors, so I’m trying to bring back that element of humanity. I listen to people’s stories and talk with them about their health issues and treat them like a person and not like a salesman. That’s the number one thing noted in our reviews: that the staff in the store really makes a difference and it separates us from other stores.

Honestly for the most part our owner lets me run the store like I want to run the store. He picked me to flagship the store and trusts me on strains and specials. I am hands on. I don’t want to be a manager that doesn’t budtend, that’s like an owner that never goes into the store. I want to put hands on products, so when people come back we can talk about their experience, and I love that I get to do that here. I also love our team, we have a great crew, and our loyal customers who we’ve seen over the years, it’s all one big family.

I love edibles and dabs. I eat a lot of edibles, and my favorite are the S’mores from Honu. I actually like them more now in the regulated market. I hate to make the analogy, but eating edibles now is like taking a shot, you used to be able to get 100mg and get wasted right away, but now you get to dose up, and for me, four or five doses is about perfect. Among the bigger companies, Fat Panda and Abstract are my go-to for dabs and flower, but my two favorite craft Cannabis companies are High End Farms and Solar Gold. My 70-yearold dad actually works for Solar Gold now rolling joints! You have to have the blend between boutique gardens and the big ones, just like Budweiser versus craft beer. I also really like WAM Oil; they really focus on terpenes and other Cannabinoids like CBG and CBN.

HOW DO YOU HELP FIND THE RIGHT CANNABIS/PRODUCTS FOR A CUSTOMER?

How do you want to feel? I don’t really say indica or sativa because there are so many blends. I try to find a product that meets what they are looking for. I try to find not just strains but terpenes and Cannabinoid profiles for what people are looking for.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING?

I’m a big Sci-Fi or Fantasy kind of geek, so if I’m alone I’ll watch movies. Now that the weather is better I like to go hiking, but I spend a lot of time at the store really. Another one of my hobbies is trying to introduce people to CBD products, and helping spread medicine and awareness outside the 502 market. Since we can’t talk about medicine in the store, it’s nice to connect with people and talk to them about how CBD helps.

A disclaimer for our store. The outside of the building doesn’t look the nicest and the parking is rough, and we are working on developing the property and building, but once you get inside we have some of the most and best products of any store I have ever seen. RACHAEL AUSTIN Rachael Austin was born in England, moved to New York and eventually landed in the lush city of Portland. Austin has used Cannabis since she was 19, mostly recreationally. But after she moved to the states in 2001, Austin was living two miles away from Ground Zero on September 11th. The aftershock of those events and living in the city constantly triggered her PTSD.

ustin looked to move out West. In October 2003, Austin officially moved to Oregon and years later endured a stroke that dramatically altered the trajectory of her life. “I moved to New York and got a job working for Def Jam, reporting to the Senior VP of anti-piracy in 2001. My office was next to Jay-Z’s office in midtown Manhattan -- and then 9/11 happened. I lived about two miles away from the World Trade Center,” Austin said. “My neighbor woke me up by pounding on the door and we went to the roof and saw the second plane hit. The aftermath, the burning smell, the poster size headshots of missing people was traumatic. I began to have panic attacks and I couldn’t stand being crowded in the subway anymore. I started to feel like I needed to leave to the city after 9/11.” A close friend was planning on moving to Portland in 2003 and invited Austin to join him on motorcycle from New York to Portland cross-country. “I decided to join him and during the ride, I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my life and I knew I wanted to help people. So before I got to Oregon, I decided I want to become a licensed massage therapist. I got to Portland in August 2003 and officially moved to Oregon in October 2003,” Austin said. “I got a job at a local pub and enrolled in Oregon School of Massage and graduated the next year. I practiced for several years, but I wasn’t able to be as social or chatty as I’d like to be with my clients during a massage. Massage therapy is very taxing on the body, so I took a break from practicing in 2012 and started working at a restaurant where I eventually had my stroke.”

Normally when people talk about strokes, we think of a geriatric age group. But strokes are on the rise in younger populations according to The Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention.

Austin was only 45 at the time of her stroke. “It was June 22 and it was the first few warm days we had in Portland. I was healthy and I was working out. I was a cigarette smoker, but I was down to five cigarettes a day. I worked a Saturday night shift at Grain & Gristle, it wasn’t a usual evening and I had been working there comfortably for a couple of years,” Austing said After my shift, I sat down with my co-workers for a glass of wine—and lit what was the last cigarette of my life. I was instantly hit with a headache like I’ve never experienced before. I took one puff and it was like a red-hot poker was thrust straight into my head – it was the most intense pain of my life.” “My friend thought I was dehydrated and went to find Gatorade. She gave me the Gatorade and I started immediately throwing up. I could hear my friends talking about who should take me home, but somewhere in my head a voice screamed at me to call 911. This was a real emergency. As soon as I could stop vomiting, a primal scream came from me and I bellowed “‘call 911.’” “I woke up in the ICU the next day. They told me I had three brain aneurysms and one had ruptured while they were trying to coil it, which caused a stroke. When I first woke up, there was so much roaring from the fluid in my ears,” Austin said. “I could see peoples’ mouths moving, but couldn’t hear anything. Luckily, it was only for a couple hours or I would have gone insane.”

Recovery & Healing

After experiencing one of the most traumatic health events a person could endure, the recovery process was a whole other battle in itself. Her partner ended their relationship while Austin was still in the ICU and her elderly dog was on a downward spiral. Transitioning back into “normal” life with a major loss of independence, coupled with the emotional loss of relationships and not being able to work practically broke Austin. Stroke patients often need care and additional assistance at home otherwise, hospital readmission is highly likely. “During recovery, my brother flew out from England to care for me. I almost died twice while he was watching me. During an operation, I had a blood clot burst while they were working on the aneurysm behind my left eye. My doctor had to fight to save my life,” Austin said. “It happened again the day my brother was leaving, he was feeding me I just started saying okay, okay, okay and I wasn’t really responding to his questions. My brother knew something was wrong. And sure enough, I had another blood clot because I wasn’t getting enough oxygen to my brain.” After living in Portland for over ten years, she became very familiar with the Cannabis scene in Portland pre-legalization. CHARLIZE THERON Most people have been forced to consume Cannabis clandestinely for the entirety of prohibition in the United States. Now that a significant portion of the country has begun the process of legalization, slowly but surely – people are coming out of the green closet. Since celebrities are just like you and me, many of them have hidden their preference for this plant from the masses throughout their (sometimes long and storied) careers. And, as legalization (along with normalization) begin to take hold in our world, we’re hearing more acceptance and admittance of Cannabis use. In some cases, they’re coming from unexpected places. Such is the case with our subject this month. Charlize Theron is an Academy award-winning actress who has appeared in and performed in some of the most popular films of the last two decades. Theron has won countless awards and accolades and served humanitarian causes IN 2001, PAPARAZZI throughout her life. There was little evidence of Theron’s love of Cannabis through her high profile acting career. Except the time in 2001, when paparazzi caught a glimpse of Theron smoking out of an apple (old school!) at a party in the Hollywood Hills. Now, on the eve of the release of her newest movie, she’s telling the world she’s a fan of the plant. Theron’s new film, Gringo, is a modern tale about the many grey areas of legal Cannabis in 2018, where get-rich-quick capitalism mixes with the realities of the Mexican drug cartels. On the press junkets for the film, Theron has suddenly decided to be open about her past with Cannabis. In a recent interview with E! News, she said “I was a wake-and-baker most of my life….I really appreciated marijuana more than anything else. My chemistry was really good with it when I was younger and then it just changed one day. Like, in my early 30’s I just became boring on it and I would just stand in front of my fridge, so that’s no good.” Now that consumers can access a myriad of different strains, concentrates, edibles, tinctures and more – Theron has decided to dive back in. “I’m open to retrying [Cannabis] again because now there are all

these different strains and you can be specific with it,” she said. “I’m actually really interested because I have really bad insomnia, and I’d much rather get off sleeping pills and figure out a strain that helps me sleep better.” Just a week after she gave the E! News interview, Theron appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! saying that she’s already dived back in. She talked about how her mom had procured Cannabis for her. “Last week she showed up at my house. [She] literally drove in her little tennis outfit and brought me a little container and just left it on my kitchen table,” Theron said. “She was like, ‘So I got some blueberry-covered chocolate ones, but if you want it faster-acting, you should go for the mints. Named the “Martha Stewart of Marijuana Edibles” by The New Yorker, Laurie has published four Cannabis cookbooks, contributes to six Cannabis publications and runs Laurie + MaryJane, an award-winning edible company based in Portland, Oregon.

Ingredients 1 cup light brown sugar ¼ cup butter, softened ¼ cup canna-butter, softened 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 1¼ cups flour ½-3/4 cup strawberry jam 8-10 marshmallows, see note* 1 cup assorted small candy, your choice ¼ cup chocolate syrup ¼ cup caramel sauce Grated white chocolate for garnish Heat oven to 340°F.

1.In the bowl of an electric mixer

cream the sugar and butters. Add the egg and beat to mix.

2.Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

In a buttered 10-12 inch tart or spring form pan, press the dough. Bake the cookie for 12-15 minutes, until light golden brown. Remove the pan from the oven and turn the temp down to 275°F.

Spread the jam on the dough to within 1 inch of the edge. Place the marshmallows on top of the jam. Bake until the marshmallows have puffed and spread. The lower temp allowed the marshmallows to stay white, which is what I wanted. (If you stay with the higher temp the marshmallows will brown. It’s not a tragedy, in fact that marshmallow toasting adds to the flavor.)

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes. Dot the cookie with the candy. Drizzle the chocolate sauce and the caramel over the cookie.

*Unless you are using mini marshmallows it’s best to cut the marshmallows in half. This way they won’t be too high when baked. They will rise but fall after baking.

Probably as a kid, being around my pops and uncles. I grew up watching them smoke and sell weed. There came a time I had to help live on my own, and we did what we had to do to survive. I started growing at about 22, right after the Navy. It was instant love. My wife’s cousin showed me how to grow weed, and I was like “wow, I don’t have to buy any more.” I’ve always known good weed sells, so I always made sure to grow the best possible.

WHAT DOES KUSH FAMILY ORIGINALS STAND FOR AS A BRAND AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

The Originals that have been in this fight, who’ve had doors kicked in and have been told they couldn’t grow. The Originals are the real weed warriors, who continues growing. That’s why I still grow, because I’ve always been a grower. I’m not going to let them tell me that I can’t grow. They’re not going to stop me. I went to 502 to continue doing what I love, and that’s the best part of it. For the real Kush strains that we got from the Oregon Kid, we kept them and grew. I’ve never had to change strains or look for anything. When other strains wouldn’t sell my OG would, it’s always been our go-to. Other growers may have something, but it isn’t the same OG.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A CANNABIS BUSINESS OWNER THAT CONSUMES THE PLANT?

My goal is to bring good weed to the people that deserve it. To do this, we consume to test and love the plant to deliver the best. I’d rather have my neighbor, who did five tours in Iraq, get good OG from me rather than corporate gardens. By letting a small operation, little guy like me into the market is the unforeseen Bigfoot coming out of the woods. I am calling them fakes and phonies because I respect the plant and the industry. For me, coming from the old school growing, I want to see competition. And if only good growers are competing the industry will flourish and the working man will benefit, and the everyone will smoke good weed. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

WHAT ARE PROBLEM TRENDS YOU SEE IN THE INDUSTRY?

Corporate Cannabis is monopolizing Cannabis. If you don’t have money you can’t be in the game. We’re real people out here. We can’t lose money for long and sustain. But the corporate entities can lose money and they’ll gain it long term. That’s the system the state built because they have chosen to listen to people who don’t smoke weed and just worry about margins. The culture they have isn’t weed, it’s greed. They can’t just jumble us all into one demographic and then try and profit from it. They’re being allowed to lie and fool the people, but they don’t want any part of our culture.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE WASHINGTON HAS REAL LEGALIZATION?

How can weed be legal if everyone can’t grow? I can grow tomatoes and I can grow hops. You should have the right to grow. So it should be legal if a person wants a couple lights, if they can’t afford to buy pot. What’s the purpose of legal weed if you don’t have the option to grow. It’s not legal, it’s a corporate takeover. And if the old weed guys keep helping hand it over the game will be lost. I won’t give up and I’ll keep talking shit. You can’t buy me.

IS THE BLACK MARKET WAY OF LIFE GOING AWAY AS PEOPLE LOSE RIGHTS AND THE REC MARKET QUICKLY RACES TO THE BOTTOM?

I’ve seen my way die and it’s about gone. There aren’t many out in the woods making money off weed. People are losing houses and it’s bullshit. Losing it to corporate pricks selling brown boogers and moldy weed, and they’re getting away with it. The state said this would be better. Where is the testing? Where is the better? There is no better. We need the right to home grow and to help small and craft farms from before legalization enter the market and succeed.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE CONSUMPTION DURING THE WORK DAY FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR EMPLOYEES?

If they don’t smoke they can’t be on the work team. You’ve got to smoke weed to know if it’s good weed. And you have to care about it to grow and process the best.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF OWNING A LEGAL CANNABIS BUSINESS?

If you aren’t in 100 stores selling a million a month and working in the 50-60 percent range, the margins are really close. Take my problem when our AC died, which killed us four weeks into flower. We had 70 days invested into that, we died, so now we have to recover. How do you do that if you aren’t hitting stores? We’re going to limp on in and let the weed do the talking. You shouldn’t have to hype the weed, it should hype you up. And you should celebrate after you get paid after you got it. Good weed sells itself.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO FINALLY BE IN THE LEGAL MARKET, AND BRINGING REAL FIRE TO THE MARKET? It feels good, because we know we earned it. We didn’t ask for it, we earned it. We worked to get here, fought to get here. We always helped people as far as weed goes, by giving advice and supporting the little guy. High Holiday 4/20

is a day and a number that has brought together lovers of Cannabis for decades. Where did this tradition begin, and how has it evolved into what it is today? Like most lore in stoner culture, everyone seems to have a different story about where the tradition of 4/20 started. Some say that it’s a police code for Cannabis, others say that it’s celebrating the relaxation day after Bicycle Day, others think that it’s a reference to a Bob Dylan song. There are even more obscure ideas about where the celebration of 4/20 began that you’ve probably heard around the joint circle. However in an effort to bring the truth to light I will highlight the real origins of this day of celebration. The tradition of 4/20 started in the ‘70s by a group of students at San Rafael High School who called themselves the Waldos. These students used 420 as a code to meet up after school at 4:20 p.m. and smoke before searching the surrounding woods for guerilla Cannabis grows. The tradition evolved and was eventually spread through Grateful Dead tours. As Cannabis enters the mainstream, 4/20 has become a much bigger tradition. With whole cities like Vancouver, BC throwing iconic celebrations. Spurred by the rise of social media, the term 420 is now synonymous with Cannabis culture. What has changed today is that Cannabis is no longer in the taboo fringes of American society, because of this 4/20 is discussed across all popular and underground media, which serves as a great discussion point for the evolution of Cannabis culture into the mainstream.
