December features a new section called Breeder of the Month, brought to us by Seeds Here Now. The section will explore the faces and work behind the strains we know and love, and the cutting edge of genetics. This month’s Breeder is Ray Bowser III, better known as Odie Diesel, who bred the infamous Oregon Diesel and Dr. Who, among many other fabulous strains. Check out the profile to see what else he’s created, and what inspires him to innovate with Cannabis genetics. This issue also covers the Gorilla Glue lawsuit, pitting an adhesive company against a Cannabis company in a no-holds-barred legal battle for trademark rights, that has big implications for the Cannabis industry. Check out the story by Matthew Meyers, which includes a Q&A with a trademark attorney. We also have great new patient and budtender profiles, new dispensaries to explore and a ton of tasty and delicious products and recipes to try out. Many thanks and blessings to all who enjoy the Leaf and support our ability to publish this magazine. It has been a gift to bring the Leaf to our readers, and I hope you like our edition as much as I do!

Californians Might Pay 70 Percent More for Legal MARIJUANA California’s legal Cannabis marketplace, coming in January 2018, will bring plenty of new fees and taxes. Buyers are going to experience sticker shock when they visit legal marijuana stores next month, according to industry experts. “Eighths” that is, one-eighth ounces of medical Cannabis, cost about $35 for good quality Cannabis in Los Angeles. But when legal sales begin and additional taxes kick in, that same purchase in the EVEN TRIM recreational market will cost WILL BE $50 or $60. That’s a jump of up TAXED BY THE STATE, to 70 percent. TO THE Even trim will be taxed by the TUNE OF $4 state, to the tune of $4 a pound. A POUND That means a garbage bag containing seven or eight pounds of trim would exceed the current market price of about $50 by five or six times. “All it would become is compost,” said Ryan Jennemann of THC Design in Los Angeles, whose company uses the leaves to manufacture oil concentrates. Next year’s high taxation is “just going to help the illicit market thrive,” according to Donnie Anderson, an LA medical grower and seller. “The existing black market for Cannabis may prove a formidable competitor to legal markets if new taxes lead to higher prices than available from illicit sources,” warned a November report from financial analysts Fitch Ratings.

STUDY: Two-Thirds of Patients Stop Using Opioids After Starting Medical Marijuana Two of every three patients who start medicinal Cannabis stop using opioid painkillers, according to preliminary results of a new study from Aclara Research. Aclara, which specializes in patient and consumer insights within the Cannabis industry, released the preliminary results of its latest study examining patient usage of medical Cannabis and the impact on prescription opioid usage. The study, which was conducted in partnership with a group of pharmacist professionals active within the Cannabis industry, found 67 percent of patients stopped using opioid medications after using medical Cannabis. The study also found that 30 percent of patients stopped using prescription drugs completely after using medical Cannabis.
While Aclara Research said the full study will be released in early 2018, key preliminary findings from the research study include: • Sixty-seven percent of patients stopped using opioid medications after using medical Cannabis. 29 percent reported a decrease in the number of opioid medications after starting medical Cannabis. •Thirty-five percent of respondents stopped using prescription drugs after using medical Cannabis. • Eighty-seven percent of pharmacists participating in the study said Cannabis should be legal for medical usage. Only 15 percent of patients are talking to their pharmacist about medical Cannabis. Instead, more than 40 percent of patients said they obtain information about medical Cannabis from the internet and social media.

Maine GovERNOR Ignores Voters, VETOES POT SALES Republican Governor Paul LePage on Friday ignored voters, vetoing legislation that would have regulated the production and sale of Cannabis to adults in Maine. He appears to have ceded control of Cannabis policy to the feds. Hey Gov, here’s a hit from the clue bong: That won’t go over well with the liberty-minded people of Maine. “The Obama Administration said they would not enforce federal law related to marijuana; however, the Trump administration has not taken that position,” LePage said. “Until I clearly understand how the federal government intends to treat states that seek to legalize marijuana, I cannot in good conscience support any scheme in state law to implement expansion of legal marijuana in Maine.” “There have been serious negative effects of legalization in other states,” LePage said, “effects that should not be repeated in Maine.” GOVERNOR PAUL Black market dealers will LEPAGE VETOED continue to operate unopposed by LEGISLATION THAT WOULD any legal channels, according to bill HAVE REGULATED supporters. Along with the taxes would come more than 80 pages of rules on how Cannabis could be grown, processed, packaged, advertised and sold. “LePage has made a mistake by vetoing this legislation,” David Boyer said of the Marijuana Policy Project. “Instead of a regulated and controlled system of marijuana cultivation and sales, Maine will continue to support the unregulated market. In 2014, the governor said he would implement a legalization law if approved by voters, but he has failed to uphold that commitment.”

Marijuana MIGHT Be Biggest Winner Of 2018 Election More politicians are realizing that marijuana reform is a winning issue. November’s election was a resounding win for Cannabis law reform efforts. And in 2018, with all 435 Congressional seats up for grabs, along with 33 seats in the Senate and 36 governorships, the stakes will be even higher. The newly elected governors in New Jersey and Virginia campaigned on marijuana legalization and decriminalization, respectively. Neither candidate’s opponent support either legalization, or changing current Cannabis policies. Local marijuana ballot measures were approved by voters in Athens, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. Incoming New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy made marijuana legalization a key part of his platform, even including it in his primary victory speech in June. Murphy wants Cannabis to be legal for adults 21 and older within 100 days of taking office. He’s said he’s ready to sign a legalization bill when it arrives on his desk. “The criminalization of marijuana has only served to clog our courts and cloud people’s futures, so we will legalize marijuana,” Murphy said after he won the

Democratic primary, reports German Lopez at Vox. “And while there are financial benefits, this is overwhelmingly about doing what is right and just.” “Candidates across the country should take notice, as Phil Murphy won the governor’s seat soundly because of, not in spite of, his open and vocal support for legalizing marijuana—a position supported by 65 percent of New Jersey voters and 64 percent of Americans nationwide,” National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) Executive Director Erik Altieri said of the election. Virginia Governor-elect Ralph Northam championed marijuana decriminalization on the campaign trail, often bringing it up during debates and on social media. Northam often described the issue in racial justice terms during the run up to the election, reports Tom Angell at Forbes. A potential change to Democratic control of the state’s House of Delegates could help the new governor move Cannabis legislation when he takes office. “Following our big wins at the ballot box in 2016, last night’s results show that marijuana reform only continues to gain momentum,” FOLLOWING Sam Tracy said, Marijuana Majority board member. “Next OUR BIG WINS AT year, multiple states will be voting on whether to legalize THE BALLOT BOX marijuana for medical or adult use, and candidates in IN 2016, LAST NIGHT’S RESULTS races for state and federal office will be asked about these SHOW THAT issues, so they’d do well to come up with good answers,” MARIJUANA ONLY Tracy said. “As the public becomes even more supportive REFORM CONTINUES TO of legalization, we expect these victories to continue.” GAIN MOMENTUM

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN THE AGE OF CANNABIS
O WILL GORILLA GLUE VS. GG STRAINS CHANGE INDUSTRY INFRINGEMENT?
STI CKY
S I T U AT I O N
hio-based Gorilla Glue and GG strains of Nevada have finally settled an intellectual property lawsuit over their Gorilla Glue #4, which must now be called GG4 or simply Original Glue. Critically, the settlement agreement does not call for GG strains to pay any damages to Gorilla Glue. But it must pay for the cost of its own rebranding. The estimate for such effors total close to $250,000 but at least that money goes to people within the industry and not paid out in a settlement and leaving GG strains and partners out of a job. If Cannabis is going to be accepted into the status quo, we need to make sure that as an industry we’re finding original ways of marketing products.Cannabis is supposed to boost your creativity. We are seeing more strains than ever entering the marketplace, sometimes too many to warrant fully stable genetics. It’s not uncommon to come across plays on already popular brand names such as Girl Scout Cookies, Zkittles, Gorilla Glue, Candyland, Dr. Who. The list goes on. It was never considered that companies could face legal repercussions for infringing on an existing brand name and identity because everything was illegal to start with. But in this wonderful and complicated age of legalization, we have websites advertising these strains potentially diverting traffic away from the existing brand’s page, among other marketing activities. I still believe we need more creative and original branding in this industry. No Cannabis business should count on being able to use the marks of an established brand in any industry. There are professional branding specialists waiting to help you create the best brand without any infringement on previous brands. The mainstreaming of Cannabis is a double-edged sword. Each time we force a strain name change, through a settlement or through a banned name, the burden falls on the consumers, who are already overwhelmed looking for which strains are right for them. They’re forced to decode acronyms and the subtle name changes, adding to the chaos at the cash register.

A trademark lawyer like me can save enormous hassle and headache by helping with the branding process and advising about the risks beforehand. Aside from nailing down various Intellectual Property rights, much of what I do involves assessing risks so people can make informed decisions and hopefully avoid expensive problems later. Preventative brand protection is not every business’ main priority when they have state and local licenses, building permits, real estate, employees, investors, buyers, harvesting, processing and a million other things to focus on. Being forced to alter your brand name after building a business around it can be incredibly disruptive later on. The brand is the thing that people use to find you; even if you aren’t forced to pay money damages in a trademark lawsuit, losses and costs involved with reinventing your brand can be dire. A little time and care upfront can save a huge headache later.
WOULD CANNABIS CONSUMERS AND ADHESIVE CONSUMERS REALLY HAVE BEEN CONFUSED?
YOU SHOULD TAKE A HARD LOOK AT THE RISK OF PUTTING YOUR ENTIRE BUSINESS BEHIND IT. The Drug Enforcement Agency can point to more than a few examples in their stash where Cannabis brands appear to infringe on mainstream brands.
Is there any upcoming legislation on this?
California has followed the federal policy of refusing to register trademarks for goods and services that violate the Federal Controlled Substances Act, including Cannabis-touching goods and services. Assembly Bill 64 would have changed that, but as far as I know, it stalled out in a legislative committee. I have heard rumblings that California will allow some state trademarks related to Cannabis as its recreational licensing system comes online, but have not seen these confirmed. What is your opinion on GG strains’ case?
The Cannabis company probably made a smart business decision to suck it up, change the name, and settle the case before it got too expensive. But if you really walk through the trademark infringement legal standard and the likelihood of consumer confusion factors (similarity of goods, similarity of marketing channels, product line expansion, etc.) I think the Cannabis company had a decent shot at defending itself from the adhesive company. Would Cannabis consumers and adhesive consumers really have been confused? Personally, I kind of doubt it but they never tried the case so we’ll never know how it would have come out. Given the settlement outcome and similar outcomes with the Stash Tea cases, for example, I would not be surprised if more non-Cannabis companies try to stop Cannabis companies from using similar brand names. No one wants to be the next test case but I would love to see a Cannabis company stand up for themselves and win. That said, my top advice is still to engage in trademark clearance upfront, take care in selecting your brand and avoid conflicts with existing brands before they start.

Zachary moved from the East Coast to Washington specifically to work in the Cannabis industry, where he started as a greeter at one of the busiest dispensaries in the state. Today he manages and tends bud at American Mary, and shares his passion for the plant with customers each day. WHEN DID YOU FIRST EXPERIENCE CANNABIS?
HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCTS?
I was 13, hanging out with my best friend Corrie and his friend’s older brother had some pot, and we smoked in the woods way way deep from my house. It was awesome! From that day, I realized it made me happy, and I always had fun with Cannabis, it’s been my thing ever since. Now I’m older and I’ve made it my job, taken that and run with it, and I am having a ton of fun doing it!
I like to read the customer based on body language. I can get a profile for my regulars who I’ve helped before, and with new customers I really take the time to listen to what they’re saying. Sometimes I hear budtenders trying to forcefully show a customer the product they themselves love, but at end of day everyone’s different with how a strain treats them, and I try to listen to people and their past uses and compare that to what I feel would help in our inventory. Listening is definitely very important.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART? I moved out to Washington in 2015 from Boston, and started working shortly after at Uncle Ike’s dispensary. I started as a parking lot greeter unfortunately, they didn’t have budtending positions, but I wanted to get in and start from bottom and wiggle my way up. I was there close to two years, ended as a shift lead budtender, and now I’m budtending and helping manage American Mary in Wallingford. I’d say my favorite part is helping people, to educate them and show them the truth about Cannabis. To tell the truth behind how cannabinoids and terpenes make you feel certain ways with Cannabis, that it’s not just THC. It’s definitely fun to watch that moment where people get it.
WHAT YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO CONSUME CANNABIS? I’m a huge dabber, that’s my thing. I love my hash oil! Before I moved out here, that was the only way I got high. I was living in Maine, and my tolerance was insane, but the flower back home doesn’t compare to here. Once I got out here I realized the quality of the flower comes into play, and with the tolerance I had I’d smoke flower out here and get just as high. So usually I’ll wake up, take a dab, smoke flower through the day, and have a nice glob at end the day. I mainly dab for flavor, I like the high terpene juicy concentrates.
WHY DO YOU LIKE WORKING AT AMERICAN MARY? I like the pace of American Mary a lot. I loved working at Ike’s, but the pace now is more my style. I like to call myself an actual stoner, I smoke a lot of weed, I’m very laid back, so when it comes to busy high paced environments it throws me off. It just feels like I’m hanging selling pot on my terms, it feels more like a pot shop here. My employees and coworkers are fantastic, it’s not just a flashy pot shop, everyone knows what they’re talking about and cares about what we offer.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES WHEN YOU AREN’T BUDTENDING? Music is my life, a lot of people say they listen, but music is me. Any time I can go to a live concert I’m there. I’m a big jam band fan, the Grateful Dead and Phish, which goes hand in hand with Cannabis culture. I’m also into the outdoors and hiking.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STRAINS AND PRODUCTS?
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD?
I’m a sucker for Tangie, any Tangie based profile is my go-to. I’ve been hyped on Skörd’s Sour Tangie, they’ve been selling material to some of my favorite extractors. [For concentrates], I like Refined, Columbia Concentrates and Skörd and they all make Tangie, and they all taste so similar but different at same time, it’s so interesting. I especially like Columbia Concentrates. They’re a little smaller company, but definitely have good quality concentrates at a good price point, which is what I look for.
I would urge people to get into the industry, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, it’s a great industry to be in and I think people need to know that. It was scary to move across the country and dive in and it’s absolutely worth it. My dad always told me, you’ll never work a day in your life if you love what you do. That’s how I feel!
MY FAVORITE PART IS HELPING PEOPLE, TO EDUCATE THEM AND SHOW THEM THE TRUTH ABOUT CANNABIS.

When did you begin your relationship with Cannabis?
How did it feel to see that change? It felt amazing. It showed me that long term campaigns can work, and that that’s what it takes. It takes organizing a whole community around an effort, and watching that happen made me feel proud and honored. I’m honored to have played that role.
Best way to describe it is in 2004 when I began growing for patients in central Oregon, and really furthering my connection with the plant. Prior to that I knew [Cannabis] did something for me, but I didn’t have medical reasons at that point. Growing for patients in an area where there was and remains a lack of access was a big turning point for me. The door opened up to show me the wide world of the medicinal benefits of Cannabis.
What are your goals for the future? I would like to continue to be a full-time advocate, but I missed the memo on how to get paid. I started a production house based around concepts and activities that I was already developing, events like Croptoberfest, which just had its fourth annual event, and Cannabits, a new media print project. I’m constantly out sharing information and trying to get people engaged, a call to action.
How do you use Cannabis now? I’ve used Cannabis for pain management, and it was the reason I was a patient. I’ve transitioned into a healthier lifestyle and don’t deal with the pain anymore, and now I’ve had a new exploration of what Cannabis brings me, how it services me. It’s an interesting question. I do believe all users are patients, we all medicate for different reasons. Currently I’m not a “legal” patient because I don’t see the benefit of being a patient in Washington state. Washington screwed the pooch for patients, and I’m not willing to give up my rights and be on a registry. We’re not serving the patients in this state.
How long have you been in Washington and how did you get involved in Cannabis here? In 2008 I moved up from Oregon back home to Washington — I was born and raised here. I decided to take my years of growing experience and go a more legit path with it, so I moved over to the Yakima Valley to build out a research and development company focused on aquaponics technology. It shows a lot of promise for normal crops, but where I saw promise was Cannabis. I built a business plan around butterhead lettuce and specialty herbs, and we grew fish alongside of that. I spent four years on that until legalization in Washington state, and in 2014 I felt compelled to get involved as a fulltime advocate after watching the bans put in place in Yakima city and county for legal Cannabis.
You were a part of lifting the city ban on Cannabis in Yakima. What was your role in that like? It was a two-year campaign to repeal the ban, with a strategy built to repeal the ban that involved organizing the community and working with the city council, and I was the community organizer on the whole process. I went out and worked with the city council, developed relationships with other members of the community, business owners, you name it. As a community organizer, my job to go out and organize common energy. The city lifted its ban, and now there are stores in Yakima, and the ability for producers and processors to move into the city.

Tell us a bit about about Cannabits?
Jedidiah Haney The affable and unapologetic Eastern Washington Cannabis activist talks with us about Croptoberfest, bans across Yakima and why he helped launch Cannabits, a simple weekly newsletter distributed at South Sound dispensaries.
We really are proud of our simple periodical, which is Cannabits, a simple front-back newsletter, and its main job is to bring a high frequency positive disruptive information into the consumer market. Bring them connectivity and awareness of all the other things beyond THC. Cannabits is my solution to the THC shaming that is happening in the marketplace, and we support that with media and production, and we have an online presence as well, and an online feed that produces videos around positive concepts and trends that we want to support, to make sure that we can offer activism and support to community.
What motivates you as an activist? I’m focusing on safe and adequate access to Cannabis and expanding knowledge of medical benefits, and I am taking on a campaign to bring that access to the Tri-Cities and Yakima County which are still under bans, and to further that effort across the state. I would like to see homegrown take place, and I will be a functional part of that process, I would like to see consumption clubs allowed, I think that we are all going to get behind Maddie’s bill, to see that student patients are treated with the same respect that they would be on pharmaceutical drugs.
How can people become politically active? My goal is always to motivate and encourage everyone to get involved. I tried to just be myself, I’m not afraid to be an activist or advocate, I was just disenfranchised, and we all share that, I want to help people find a community that we can all work with. People should advocate for IT TAKES ORGANIZING themselves and their fellow community, A WHOLE COMMUNITY and that, ultimately, we allow a small AROUND AN EFFORT, group of representatives to manipulate AND WATCHING THAT our experience and I would like to HAPPEN MADE ME FEEL encourage people to run for office. PROUD AND HONORED. Stay involved in what’s happening, with Cannabis rights and other rights, locally and nationally. I want to thank my community for the support that they have given me in this process of becoming a full-time advocate. There is much more work to be done and it’s going to take a tribe.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.
SETH ROGEN the perpetually smirking canadian has made a career out of playing hardworking stoners we love
Seth Rogen’s “stoner comedian” persona is legendary. Seth Rogen is the reason Cannabis is legal in 29 states. Bear with me, and I’ll explain why this 30–something comedian from Vancouver, B.C. is the greatest force for the normalization of Cannabis in our lifetime. Rogen relocated to the United States in his early twenties to pursue a career in Hollywood and lived in Portland for a short time. He landed a supporting role on Freaks and Geeks just prior to the show being cancelled and started writing, a talent that would serve him well throughout his career, for Da Ali G Show on HBO. He made his first appearance on film with a minor role in Donnie Darko. His breakthrough role in film came in Judd Apatow’s debut film The 40-Year-Old Virgin, then Knocked Up and Funny People. In each of these films, the audience gets the feeling that Rogen is playing versions of himself, that’s part of what makes this actor so endearing and what makes him such a strong force as a Cannabis advocate. It was around this time that Rogen met Evan Goldberg, who he would team up with to write some modern Cannabis film classics such as Superbad, Pineapple Express and This is the End. In each of his films Rogen’s characters have Cannabis in common, and while many of his characters are your typical lovable teenage or 20-something stoner, Rogen and his partners make an effort to demonstrate that, while Cannabis is a good time, it’s ultimately not dangerous. Watch any interview with him and you’ll find that the actor and filmmaker talks about his Cannabis use casually and without a hint of shame. In fact, I get the feeling that we’ll look back on these interviews and this period of time as the beginning of the shift toward normalization. On a recent episode of the now defunct Any Given Wednesday show on HBO, Rogen described one of his first experiences with herb to host Bill Simmons. “In high school, there was a place run out of a guy’s basement that was an all-you-can-eat weed buffet. And you would pay $10 and there was the weirdest collection of people there. I remember the first time I smoked weed was like with a 65-year-old person. You would pay and they’d put out nachos, pizza, tacos made with weed. It was amazing,” Rogen said. In 2014, when asked about how he would like to be perceived as a Cannabis user, Rogen told Rolling Stone “I consider myself more of a pothead than a stoner. A pothead has the connotation of being someone who just smokes a lot of pot and has stopped thinking about it.” Rogen added, “For the first few years that people smoke weed, they’re always trying to classify it and qualify it, ‘Is this bad weed, is this

good weed, what is it doing?’ Eventually, it just is what it is, and I’ve been there for, like, 10 years. It’s so stupid, but I don’t think about it anymore.” Rogen is an activist and a member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, where he’s advocated for legalization nationwide. In a 2009 interview for Playboy, he lamented the hypocrisy of prohibition. “When I first came to LA, I got caught smoking weed on a beach in Malibu and had to go to court. It was the craziest thing ever. I was thinking, ‘We’re in Los Angeles. There are probably 400 people getting murdered at this second, and these two cops are taking an hour to write up my court summons for smoking a joint on the beach.’ That just seemed so fucking ridiculous to me.” Is Seth Rogen the reason the veil of Cannabis misinformation and prohibition is being lifted? Perhaps, though one thing is for sure: Rogen’s honesty and willingness to not be ashamed in public about his personal use is something that is needed from more individuals. Whether it was intentional or not, through Rogen and Goldberg’s characters: America started to see Cannabis as the innocuous, fun and often funny part of society that’s been marginalized for too long.

NATIONAL MARIJUANA RETAIL & DISPENSARY EXPO
WHY ATTEND RADEXPO?
Most retail and dispensary owners don’t bother attending today’s cannabis trade shows for a variety of reasons: Admission prices are too high; many vendors are targeting cultivators; the public are allowed in; they lack focus; the same speakers talk about the same tired subjects at every event, etc.
RAD Expo is different. • RAD Expo is a business-only event that is 100% focused on the retail side of the industry.
• Attendance is free for licensed retail stores and dispensaries, as well as qualified applicants in states not yet issuing licenses. • All exhibitors will have products and services aimed at making retailers more profitable. • Our speakers will have serious retail and marketing experience. • It’s a national show featuring businesses from all over the U.S. • Portland, Oregon sits squarely in the middle of the biggest legal marijuana market in the world. STRAIN OF THE MONTH By WES ABNEY | PHOTOS by

xperience Organics is a tier 3 Cannabis producer processor in Benton County, an area in Eastern Washington that is known for its wine and hops production. The company focuses on organic and sustainable growing, using all LED lighting in the entire facility, reducing its footprint and delivering a product that is unique and delicious. Through in-house breeding and careful strain selection, the end result is delicious and medicinal flowers, oils, tinctures and topicals. Of course, we went straight for the flower, and the Gandalf was as magical as the name suggests. Big fluffy nuggets coated in trichomes fill the glass jar nicely, with a beautiful bouquet of terpenes and flavor released upon opening. The Gandalf is an indica-dominant hybrid that has a sweet, sugary warm smell with earthy, apple and cherry notes hiding over a bright layer of cleaner and lemon fuel. The flower is cured perfectly and a gentle but quick snap reveals a lightly fluffy body with a hint of stickiness. Perfect for any form of smoking, we enjoyed filling a Sherlock pipe and puffing Gandalf style. The flower burns lightly and evenly, with a white ash and extremely clean exhale. Definitely an evening strain, we felt the effects of this Gandalf instantly, filling the body with a relaxed and gentle THC hug before landing in a euphoric, sleepy, happy indica high. This strain can truly make an evening feel more magical. Try this strain over your holiday break!

LEBLANC CNE
HINDU KUSH MOROCCAN-STYLE HASH Old-school processing meets a new recreational market with Moroccan-style strain-specific hash from LeBlanc CNE.
As a solid indica strain, the mind is blurred first, with a massive body high quickly washing over into a euphoric couchlock mode. 50/dec. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
Moroccan-style hash is gathered by tumbling the top colas of the plant to collect the kif, made up of fine trichome heads and little to no plant matter. Pressed into the distinct circle with the LeBlanc symbol in the center, these hash coins represent the classic quality of the plant without any additives, in a way that’s been made for thousands of years. The material sourced for this hash is Clean Green certified, meaning no pesticides were used in the production of the plants. Without using any solvents or chemicals in the extraction process, this hash is the cleanest and purest essence of the plant, and at a tremendous value. Priced to $30 to $35 per gram, this hash delivers a lot of quality high for the dollar. Our favorite element of the hash is the flavor, which smells like it came right out of the garden. Deep and loud earthy notes rip out of the container, with a thick and rich tickle that can only come from plant resins. This is the cream of the crop, with a sour then sweet funk that dazzles the mind and taste buds. As a solid indica strain, the mind is blurred first, with a massive body high quickly washing over into a euphoric couchlock mode. The coins are solid to touch but break apart under a gentle steady pressure, with a barely sticky texture THE SCORE that holds together without becoming dusty or crumbly. THE CANNABIS GROW BIBLE GROWING TIPS FOR EVERY LEVEL OF GARDENER By GREG GREEN, 3RD EDITION, 2017, 690 PAGES, $40
I
t’s really no exaggeration to describe Greg Green’s Cannabis Grow Bible as a magnum opus. Its sheer heft (690 pages) and broad coverage of the topic sets a lofty standard for books on Cannabis horticulture. Green hails from Ireland, making him rather unique among the increasingly crowded field of marijuana grow experts. The first two editions of his comprehensive and well-presented book struck a chord with growers, leading to sales of more than 55,000 copies of the first edition and 100,000 copies of the second. Now the third edition of the Bible delivers fully updated information, with new sections on organics, hydroponics and LED lighting along with more than 1,100 color photos. Methods for growers who want to maximize yield and potency are the “draw” of this book. Green’s signature style blends a solid understanding of Cannabis botany with practical advice regarding the day-to-day challenges of maintaining a high-yield garden. The book covers everything from selecting the best genetics, to dealing with pests and predators, to concealing your crop from prying eyes, to germinating seeds, making clones and growing buds. In particular, it gives an excellent explanation of the “Sea of Green” technique, which gives a high yield using fewer plants, which is important information for growers are often penalized for exceeding a certain number of plants. As a grower who loves to use seeds, particularly in making interesting crosses, I loved the chapter on “How to Breed Cannabis.” Pollen collecting, seed storage and the principles of simple plant breeding and genetics are clearly explained. If you want to learn more about both indoor and outdoor growing techniques, soil and hydroponic grows, organic gardening and hash extraction, you’ll find abundant information on those topics. Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate grower, or a pro, you can benefit from the breadth and depth of information presented. Professionals in particular will benefit from the chapters covering advanced systems and breeding.
WHETHER YOU’RE A BEGINNER, AN INTERMEDIATE GROWER, OR A PRO, YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM THE BREADTH & DEPTH OF INFORMATION PRESENTED

Joanna McKee,
a true pioneer of medical Cannabis in Washington state and the originator of the Green Cross, died last month after a decades long battle to bring medicine to patients. 60/dec. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
An iconic woman confined to a wheelchair since a car accident in the 1970s, and always with a Cannabis leaf eye patch, Joanna McKee co-founded the first publicly available buyers’ club for Cannabis in Seattle in the early 1990s. Known as the Green Cross, the club paved the way for the future of medical marijuana for hundreds of thousands of patients. Her 1995 arrest triggered a massive wave of public awareness about medical Cannabis and the people she was helping with the 160 plants she was growing on Bainbridge Island. McKee shared her medicine with AIDS and cancer patients who desperately needed access to medication. “These people were very sick,” she said in a 2001 interview. “I talked to my partner and said we got to help these people. So, if I can get a note from their doctor saying that [Cannabis] wouldn’t interfere with their medications, maybe we can help. So, I started telling people, if you get a note from your doctor... I’ll add a couple more plants to the ones I’m growing for myself and try and help you out. And it kind of snowballed from that situation, and within about two years we had 70 patients.” Her arrest forced a conversation that had been mired in drug war propaganda, as she made news headlines for providing terminal patients with weed while risking her own freedom and health. As the national focus shifted toward Cannabis as medicine, McKee used her influence to spread powerful truths about Cannabis that made waves nationally. “ You’re growing your own medicine. Do you understand how powerful that is? I can save my life with what I’m doing right here,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 1995. The right to treat oneself and grow was central to McKee’s philosophy, as she navigated politics and changes as first medical use and then recreational use was legalized in Washington. McKee embodied the true spirit of medical Cannabis, the reckless activism that drove people to risk their lives for others to medicate. Her spirit lives on through the energy of those who continue to fight for legalization, both here in Washington, and throughout the country. We honor her legacy and her choice to fight for our plant and our medicine, and thank her for the sacrifice she made to bring freedom to the plant we all know and love.

Overcoming pain through Cannabis inspired him to educate young and old about the plant’s numerous benefits.
JASON JAMES has severe osteoarthritis in his shoulders,
which worsened after playing football in high school. Osteoarthritis alone ought to be enough to persuade someone to use Cannabis for pain management, but James’ first encounter with Cannabis was not out of pain or curiosity but grief. James was devastated by the sudden loss of both of his grandparents. He was raised by them and the upheaval threw him into a spiral of depression. “I didn’t smoke before I was 21. I was a late bloomer in that regard. I was raised by my grandparents and lost them both within a month of each other,” he said. “My grandmother died of cancer and my grandpa died of a broken heart a month later. I was always a straight edge kid and I didn’t partake because they raised me old fashioned. After all, they were from the prohibition era.” James’ friends at the time wanted to pull him out of his depression, so they suggested he try Cannabis for the first time. “My friends were tired of me being in bad shape. I was a jerk sometimes and I was always upset or defensive. Grief is incredibly strong, but my friends had enough. They loaded a bowl and told me to ‘just hit this mini aluminum bat.’ It was the first thing I ever smoked out of,” James said. “I don’t remember feeling anything at first, but once we got to our destination, I was laughing for no reason. For the first time since my grandparents died, I was smiling again. I was really lucky because I had access to high quality Cannabis at the time. A beautiful friendship was born at that point.” After James experienced a few hours of relief, he decided to look deeper into the healing potential of Cannabis. James became a regular Cannabis user and moved to California, where he applied for his first medical marijuana card. He made the pilgrimage to Oregon and became an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program patient to treat his osteoarthritis in 2011.

“When I find something that works that quickly, I tend to immerse myself in it. Cannabis started me on a path of healing. My friends were just getting high to get high, but I knew there was more to it,” he said. “Grief doesn’t go away until you deal with it. Using Cannabis during the process of grieving was like a loved one holding your hand. My cortisol levels went down. Life was brighter.” Cannabis doesn’t make the grieving or healing process any easier, but it gave James’ body and mind peace through the journey of emotional work. “I lost my wife in 2005, ten years after my grandparents died. I’ve been a single, full-time Dad for the last 14 years. If it wasn’t for Cannabis throughout the process of child rearing, my child would not have turned out as well as she did,” James said. “If I didn’t have a positive daily coping tool to deal with the constant issues of healing, I don’t know how I would’ve done it. My daughter is a straight-A student; she’s involved in school and incredibly independent. I feel like I’ve done a good job raising her and I’m attributing my success in part to Cannabis.”
Balance through outreach “Cannabis creates mental and physical homeostasis. It’s important to find the right cannabinoids and strains that work the best for you. If you are well balanced, your cortisol levels go down, and during that short time your fight-or-flight response goes away too. This helps you think clearly and prioritize how you’re going heal yourself,” James said. Not only did James have to get his mind right after the loss of his wife, he also had to parent and comfort his child throughout the ordeal. Some may wonder how he approaches the topic of Cannabis with his daughter. “The best way to frame a conversation is to lead by example. If you show your kids you work hard, you
are clean and still you use Cannabis, their image on the topic completely changes. All of a sudden, it is now a medicine—it’s a homeopathic healing tool,” James said. “It’s a good thing in the appropriate situations. The problem with hiding your Cannabis consumption from your kids, is almost every moment is a teachable moment. It is up to the parents to teach during those moments. If you continue to teach and educate, your child will have a respect for the topic. Why lie to your children?” Open lines of communication are vital to effective parenting. If parents aren’t having the conversation on Cannabis with their children, somebody else will. Cannabis is legal and James treats it like medicine. “Kids notice everything, they see it all and they hear it all. As my daughter got older, my Cannabis

consumption got too difficult to hide,” James said. “When the anxiety around hiding it became more stressful because of my Cannabis use, I had to educate her. I have a little curriculum from a Cannabis class I taught, so I gave her a history of Cannabis on where it came from and prohibition.” James is an active member of the Cannabis community and currently works to educate seniors on the benefits of Cannabis. He works closely with geriatric patients, with their doctor’s support and approval. James teaches a 90-day curriculum and does not believe his work should be hidden from his daughter. “Having conversations about Cannabis opened more lines of communication between my daughter and I. Don’t lie to your kids. I told her Cannabis is for adults and children with serious illness.”
KIDS NOTICE EVERYTHING, THEY SEE IT ALL AND THEY HEAR IT ALL. AS MY DAUGHTER GOT OLDER, MY CANNABIS CONSUMPTION GOT TOO DIFFICULT TO HIDE.
James uses Cannabis for wellness to manage his arthritic joints. He experiences regular chronic pain from severe osteoarthritis in his right shoulder. For those with similar issues, he advised beginning “a regiment of Cannabis topical treatment on the affected area every four to six hours. I recommend 1:1 or 2:1 CBD to THC. I always use THC with CBD because they need each other to work the best. THC and CBD are symbiotic, it’s important people don’t dismiss THC, because it’s like combination therapy.” Topicals are the unsung hero in most Cannabis toolboxes. James applied Cannabis topicals directly to the surface of pain on his shoulder. Transdermal skin patches work too, preferably 1:1. He also recommends ingesting Cannabis when the pain becomes more intense. “When things get really painful, I use a transdermal patch, an edible and get plenty of rest and sleep. I use a multi-pronged approach depending on how I feel. And it’s not just an approach to healing, but also an approach to wellness as a whole. Anything you can do physically for your body is going to help, whether it’s yoga or free weights,” James said. Kaleafa has multiple stores around Portland, and James said he has always loved the service and knowledge the budtenders provide. When it comes to concentrates, James recommends Portland Extracts. He believes they are affordable without sacrificing quality. “I would also recommend an 1:1 extract. THC helps reduce the pain, and CBD for inflammation. I dab every four to six hours for my shoulder, either solventless or butane hash oil (BHO) preferably,” James said. “Flower consumption is important. You get a full cannabinoid and terpene profile. I find that the terpene limonene really helps with anxiety, so I look for flower and concentrates with higher levels of it. Flower and extracts provide a natural combination of therapy.” James said he has lost more than 120 pounds since using strains high in THC-V, an appetite suppressing cannabinoid. He is a walking, living and breathing example of how Cannabis can positively impact a life. “Just because you’re enjoying yourself, doesn’t mean the Cannabis isn’t working. I know that goes against most things we know, but Cannabis makes me feel really good and it is not terrible for me,” James said. “If you feel better, great! Thank God, because that’s the idea. Feeling good is beneficial. It’s OK to enjoy yourself and be healthy at the same time.”

BREEDER MONTH OF THE
RAYMOND BOWSER III
Our first Breeder of the Month also goes by Odie Diesel and he’s one of the best Cannabis breeders we’ve ever encountered. Bowser is a second generation grower who learned at a young age the ins and outs and best practices for growing from working alongside his father. Bowser applied that knowledge and developed growing and breeding techniques that are the envy of America’s Cannabis economy. Bowser is an in-demand consultant and one of the Northwest’s most important research and development botanists working today.
Can you describe your selection process from start to finish?
It usually takes two to four years before a strain is ready to go to market. I will pop several seeds to see what the strain consistency is. If I don’t find a keeper in a five-pack of seeds, most likely I won’t keep it. I cruise through hundreds of clones, too. We use our test gardens to gather strain data. My testers report back with real data on the progress which helps me get a bigger picture of strain potential. I want real world feedback. I am not trying to teach people how to grow. I just want to know how my plants grow with different regiments. I usually check in bi-weekly with my testers, not just for the end result, but how the strain grows even before flower. I am looking for fasems, intermodal spacing, leaf patterns and general plant health. What strain makes you the most proud? The one I haven’t
How did you start growing weed? I started growing weed when I was 14 years old.
I was filling pots, making sure there were two dozen worms per pot and cleaning leaves. I was essentially the dishwasher of the job and I fell in love with it. The first Cannabis strain I ever grew was Hashplant with my father. My godfather at the time, was the president and founder of a bike club in Colorado. I was raised around bikers; it’s where a lot of my ethics come from. It was normal for me to go to the clubhouses and the meets. All of our original growing back then was indoor, even going into the 90s because of prohibition. Hydroponics in basements was how we learned how to use nutrients. When did you start Breeding? created yet. The next one. More than anything I want to see how people respond to what I do. Honestly, it’s not about me or what I like. It’s about the consumer and the patient, and what they’re getting out of it. I’m trying to find medical applications for Cannabis, and we’ve used a sort of questionnaire with patients to measure their dosage, ailment and treatment with the Cannabis we provide. We’re most interested in solving multiple sclerosis, restless leg syndrome, migraines and fibromyalgia. Favorite vintage strain? Jamaican Blue Mountain, one of
the California Red Hair. I wouldn’t say it was a successful cross, but it was okay. It was a fast producer, so we grew it. We had an eight week off mom and out the door. It had too much sativa in it, so it didn’t pan out in the long run. Occasionally you would find a good pheno, but I wouldn’t want to sell it to anybody. I started seriously breeding in the early 90s. I began seed testing for TGA and began doing my own stuff on my side.
the most exotic varieties I’ve worked with. It was an outdoor strain, so it had a motor memory for outdoor, and when I [brought] it indoors it just kept failing. We had to try to inbreed it inside, cross it with a male we’d grown, to get it used to functioning indoors. Jamaican Blue Mountain is not a landrace but an inbred line, and I’ve had it over a decade.
When did breeding click for you? Well, I had kids and took off for a while in terms

of growing to focus on raising them. I moved to Oregon from Colorado in 2003. When I got here, I knew I wanted to participate in the Cannabis scene. Specifically, I wanted to stick out by having better Cannabis genetics than everyone else. At a grow shop in Salem I randomly met and started up a conversation with Dioxide from TGA seeds, who gifted me Timewreck. We got a plant that popped one branch of pollenated sacks, which we clipped and quarantined. We then pollinated a few different plants which resulted in: X with Chem Dawg created our Wet Dawg X with Super Silver Haze created our Touch of Gray X with UK Cheese created Brie X with Medicine Woman created our Mad Scientist These were some of our first “winner” strains and started our process, which exists to this day, of sourcing outside female plants to cross with our males. as a herm cross that gained infamous attention across the country. I’ve always been more about medicinal effect over looks. Quality will always stand, so you don’t have to constantly release new, potentially unstable genetics. Like I said before, I usually wait at least two and up to four years before I am comfortable releasing a strain to the public. The first strain test I did was on Oregon Diesel in Colorado in 2010, by a lab that got shut down by the DEA and wiped the data. After that, I found Pat Marshall at Sunrise Analytical. Best thing you can do is to hire a good lawyer. No one, not even [patent-holders] are protected on a federal level because of the scheduling. KEEP THE PRIORITY UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF MOVING QUICKLY DURING THE EARLY STAGES OF INDOOR GROWS “Boy, am I glad I waited ‘till the last possible moment to do that,” said no gardener ever! There are a few pervasive rules when it comes to indoor gardening, and perhaps none is more pervasive than the rule of keeping the priority. This simply means doing everything as quickly as possible, with success. Waiting until tomorrow is never a good idea in the garden. The benefits of completing each task at its earliest possible point are exponential. In this month’s Growtech, we will be reviewing just a fraction of the benefits those who keep the priority are spoiled with. This article will focus on is the first four weeks of bloom. If not simply because so many physical changes happen during this stage, keeping the priority virtually dictates the outcome of the round. Each of the points highlighted below are outcomes only of keeping up with the training, selecting, tuning and bending work that goes on during this stage.
BY NORTHWEST LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR DR. SCANDERSON
Plant Health and Vigor Bending and tuning your plants contribute meaningfully to plant development and vigor. It’s the tuning portion that actually creates the result I am pointing to. By changing the position of the apical growing tip(s) of the plant you’re also diffusing and dispersing powerful auxins and hormones responsible for such a wide variety of biological functions, the most cutting edge science is still at a loss in knowing the specificities and extent of each. One results is that it initiates several biological functions in the plant as well as accelerates growth processes. The result is an improvement to plant health and vigor. Stronger, Faster Roots and Shoots Another result discovered and verified through peer reviewed study is the increased growth rates of branches

and also play in the reindeer games. Anyone else who has performance insurance as part of their protocols will benefit from keeping the priority as those plants that are going to fail catastrophically and need to be replaced are revealed significantly earlier allowing the insurance plants to be most effective in their role of catching up to the round already in flower.
and shoots, as well a more rapidly developing rhizosphere. Training and tuning provides a similar benefit below grade as it does above. When plant growth is directed laterally, so is root growth and vice versa. Allowing the plant to form a wide, reaching crown during this stage allows for complete use of the medium and large root balls compared to untrained plants. Indoors there is a limited capacity below ground so maximizing growth potential requires maximizing use of the medium that is available. Significantly Improved SAR Response Systemic Autoimmune Response (SAR) is a fancy way of describing the plant’s existing bio-defense mechanisms. All plants come equipped with a fierce set of resources available that can be utilized anytime it falls under attack from pests, disease or any other pathogens. These systems are only effective when the plant’s health is at or near peak performance. By keeping the priority and instilling vigor and health along with increased growth rates to rudimentary areas of the plant structure one is able to achieve such potentials and as a result bacteria, spores and pests stand little chance at effectively infusing an epidemic. The Final Shape is Revealed Keeping the priority requires completing a task at the earliest available time. Many tasks, however, exist in a flexible time range. Newer gardeners will have a more difficult time estimating the final result of the plant in this stage compared to someone whose seen a round mature on a daily basis several times. Nevertheless, when tuning a branch or site selection are done at the earliest possible moment it becomes easier to see what the final shape of the plant is going to be. Granted, when I started doing selection, the majority was com-
pleted between days 18-21 now it’s closer to day seven, it never ceases to amaze me how the plant will show glimpses of her final form within a day or two of completing the process. Growth and Light are Directed Efficiently Being so limited by our light source indoors, it’s even more important to ensure the priority is kept during this stage as the plant will respond to the areas where light exposure penetrates. By executing tuning and selection at the earliest possible moment, the plant understands where growth is needed. Further, less of plant’s energy and resources are directed toward sites, branches, leaves and other areas that are going to end up getting selected out eventually and more time on just the areas the gardener selects. Increased Recovery Time By keeping the priority there are more days available for the plant to recover as well as aggressively develop. Because this period is fixed, it’s beneficial to use as many of the days during the period devoted only to rapid development while still ensuring the shape of the canopy is achieved. Because these two goals are somewhat opposed to the benefits of tuning and bending dominant tops and areas of the canopy at the earliest possible time, is amplified through the plant’s ability to recover and spend more time in aggressive development and less time recovering from a training. Catastrophic Failure Happens Earlier I’ve found counting on failure to be an asset. As someone who has a fixed number of spaces available for plants it’s imperative that each site performs. Sometimes none fail, sometimes a few do. As a result I always keep a couple “insurance” plants so that I can keep up
Improved Bloom Cycle When maximum vigor, health and development are married with careful but deliberate training the plant moves through this period most rapidly. Lots of changes are going on and in order to complete them, all systems must be healthy and happy. Just one that isn’t can prevent the plant from carrying out critical biological functions allowing it to progress to the next point in development causing it to spend longer, for instance, stretching than setting. By keeping the priority, plants rocketing through the stages of development in the earlier point progressing to the final canopy shape and space faster. The result is a plant which spends more of the total growing cycle in stages that humans typically find more desirable, namely bulking and ripening. Those stages only stand to be shortened, should the initial portion of the grow require more time for any reason, adding more days to the cycle isn’t a resolution to this issue. In other words the gestational time is fixed, keeping the priority allows you to maximize it. Keeping in mind that this principle is being applied to only one stage and only one task associated with development, it is easy to imagine how when it’s applied to other areas the same exponential number of benefits explode into one’s perspective. As a professional procrastinator keeping these thoughts and ideas at the forefront of my awareness serves as a motivation and inspiration to complete the day’s tasks with exuberance. I hope some wears off on you too. If you have questions regarding the order of priority please don’t hesitate to contact me at DrScanderson@protonmail.com and as always, Happy Gardening!

HOW SHE GROWS
The f2 selection are hearty starters that
root quickly and with ease. From there you can immediately start to see the divergence in the growth pattern. She is a bit slower to generate a root ball although she responds extremely well to topping, growing into an almost perfectly shaped bush with just a topping or two. The plants enjoy high amounts of Nitrogen and Carbon early on in flower. The dominant phenotype stays shorter and bushier, stretching only to improve her structure and make bud site more evenly spaced.
BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT one thing clear about this plant is that she
is a yielder. Challenging the jar width with every entry Lemon Funk throws down. Full of trichomes the classic Skunk look, but with a more even and neat, densely packed spear shaped flowers more reminiscent of Chem and Sour Diesel side of the family. The terpenes are strong and piercing and span the range of lemon rind, lemon blossom baked lemon chiffon pie with a mild but distinct Chem and Kush background. The flavor immediately delivering a lip smacking sweet pink lemonade taste with an unmistakable sour.
EFFECTS lemon funk delivers a crazy potent soaring
sativa effect. When you need to get up and go, the Lemon Funk doesn’t let you down. Creative, eye opening and inspiring, taking bong tokes of these blooms reminds me of the York Peppermint Patty commercials giving cool refreshing sensation lemon zest candy and fun! Real breeding and selection is boasted in spades with this plant making it easy to find “the one” phenotype you’re looking for. This plant all but replaces one of my all-time favorites, the Super Lemon Haze and is sure to be a favorite amongst all the lemon appreciators.

TAKING BONG TOKES OF THESE BLOOMS REMINDS ME OF THE YORK PEPPERMINT PATTY COMMERCIALS
BY NORTHWEST LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR DR. SCANDERSON
BREEDER: Dirt Brothers Genetics GENETICS: [Lemon Skunk x Lemon Tree x (Chem D x Sour D)] LINEAGE: Bringing a very special Lemon line to seed form, these breeders
have done it again. After carefully selecting the first filial generation (f1’s), they found a selection that beat expectations for terpenes, flower time, stability and structure.
