Thanks for picking up this special edition!

FOUNDER & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The Concentrates Issue is my favorite of the year for one simple reason: I love dabs! My first dab was around 2011, in the century-old boiler room below the nowclosed Northern Cross Collective Gardens, and I remember feeling the oil touch the red-hot nail as the vapor burst into my lungs with the force of a thousand bong hits.

Please get in touch to place an ad or become a drop-off location to display our magazine. Feel free to share feedback, pitches, story ideas and hot news tips. This is all our plant!

The world closed in around me, and I felt the reverberation of raw THC as it pulsed in my blood and mind, sending me away for the next few hours humming with a high that was unlike anything else. Over the last eight years of publishing and working in Cannabis I have personally witnessed the concentrate world evolve from Rick Simpson Oil featuring Naptha (Coleman camp fuel) and open-blasted butane hash oil to highly medicinal mono-Cannabinoid extracts, vaporizable concentrates of all kind, and the precursor to a new world of edibles, topicals, capsules and more. For our Concentrate Issue, we sought out the best examples of the different types of extractions, share how they affect the body, and the science behind the scenes. It’s such a wonderful experience to meet and sample extracts from the best processors on the West Coast. Concentrating Cannabis means exactly what it sounds like - taking a full plant and using a process or solvent to extract the purest essence of the plant. Concentrates have the ability to impart healing values that flower alone cannot replicate and deliver a pure flavor and effect dab that will have the headiest wook sweating and smiling from the terps. Concentrates cover every aspect of Cannabis, from the medicinal to the “recreational,” and everywhere in between. Our comprehensive Concentrate Issue covers the different extraction methods, terminology, ways to consume and everything in between. So, take a dab, flip through this beautiful and informational issue, and learn something new that you can share with someone in need of Cannabis, as a plant, and as a medicine.

As always, thanks for reading!

NEW STUDY FINDS 8 OF 10 PARENTS GET HIGH BEFORE WATCHING TV WITH KIDS

Some television shows — especially ones aimed at kids — can be difficult viewing for parents. But if part of being a good parent means spending together time while the little ones enjoy their favorite programs, what is one to do? Smoking weed helps. According to a new study from NYC-based Miner and Co. Studio, 8 out of 10 parents surveyed who use marijuana admitted they “regularly” get high before watching TV with the young ones. Expanding the consciousness a bit makes parents more “engaged, present and mindful,” reports Adweek. For decades, parents were afraid to admit, even anonymously, that Cannabis played “Cannabis plays a any part in their lives. No toking parent wants a visit from Child Protective Services; positive role with horror stories abound. parents, according All this is especially true when it came to actually beinging under the influence to the study.” of weed while actively “parenting.” So, for Cannabis to be reported as an experience enhancer, i.e., a positive part of a family experience, is nothing less than epochal, when you think about it. The parents who reported using Cannabis are adamant they are good parents. Nine out of 10 respondents who used weed self-identified as “professional, active, open-minded, passionate, mindful, present, engaged and relaxed.” That doesn’t sound much like the negative stereotypes of incompetent, bumbling stoner parents from the bad old days. Cannabis plays a positive role with parents, according to the study. This is because they are “better able to put aside the impatience that is such an entrenched part of today’s adult experience and take the time to read and bond with their kids,” Miner said. Cannabis-consuming parents say they’re more engaged in discussing their kids’ favorite TV shows with them after consuming Cannabis. Interestingly, 80 percent of them are more likely, while high, to seek out shows from their own childhoods to share with their kids. Part of the image problem, according to the experts, comes from mass media itself. Over-simplifying and trivializing the image of those who choose to use pot comes all too easily. “The stoner stereotype is so prevalent and persistent in TV and media that it continues to stigmatize those for whom Cannabis is part of their active and healthy lifestyle,” Robert Miner, president of Miner & Co. Studio, told Adweek. Eight out of 10 parents in the survey said they are mindful of, and discrete with, their Cannabis consumption. They said they’re careful not to use too much. According to the study, they are more likely to consume edibles than to smoke or vape before watching TV with their kids. Cannabis parents said that portraying a character on TV using Cannabis shouldn’t be any more a big deal than showing someone having alcohol. Seven out of 10 said they’d like to see more realistic portrayals of that on the tube.

NEW CANNABIS LICENSES PAUSED BY OREGON REGULATORS announced that they’ll temporarily stop processing marijuana business license applications received after June 15. The move from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission aims to help clear an application backlog. Growers, processors, and retailers are all facing challenges in an already crowded industry, reports the Portland Business Journal. Applicants that arrived after the deadline “will be set aside for processing until the OLCC processes outstanding applications and renewals in the queue,” according to the commission. Oregon had 1,863 active licensed recreational marijuana businesses as of May 23. That number included 1,001 growers. “Assigned applications” covered 847 licenses, with another 477 “ready for assignment” in the queue. The Oregon Cannabis Association, representing legal marijuana businesses in the state, said it’s keeping an eye on the situation. The decision to pause applications comes after the OLCC announced Oregon’s recreational marijuana retailers sold only 108,330 pounds of weed last year. That left 891,670 pounds unsold, according to the commission’s numbers. OREGON CANNABIS REGULATORS

30 ARRESTED AT POP UP MARIJUANA EVENT IN DC arrests at a “marijuana pop-up event” in Northeast DC netted 30 people and pounds of weed, police announced on June 18. Marijuana was seized from 28 vendors. Cash totaling more than $10,000 was also confiscated at the event, according to police, along with three firearms. Marijuana possession is legal in DC, as long as its two ounces or less, and you’re at least 21 years old. It’s also legal to give an ounce or less of weed to someone else, as long as they are at least 21 and there’s no payment or exchange or other goods and services. Selling pot is still illegal, as is smoking it in public. Police have recently been cracking down on “giveaway” events where vendors sell customers a small item such as a sticker and then “give” customers marijuana as a bonus. A SERIES OF

When it comes to cannabis, safety is essential. Driving under the influence is illegal—and it’s also dangerous. Cannabis can impair judgment, alertness, and reaction time. And driving while under the influence could lead to harmful— possibly deadly—collisions. Which could mean significant legal penalties for you. By choosing a safer ride, you can keep yourself—and others on the road— out of harm’s way.

ALASKA MARIJUANA BOARD TAKES ON LAB TESTING INCONSISTENCIES testing results have attracted the attention of the Alaska Marijuana Control Office. They are now investigating the two state facilities used for testing Alaskan weed for potency and contaminants. The Cannabis office, along with the Alaska Division of Environmental Health, conducted a series of tests of the same samples at both facilities. They published their findings and recommendations for more accurate lab operations in a new report. The Division of Environmental Health sent samples of identical Cannabis muffins, cookie crumbs, capsules, and dried flower to the state’s two existing labs, CannTest and Steep Hill. A third cannabis testing lab in the state closed in April. According to a June 11 release from the marijuana office, the samples were analyzed using different extraction protocols, but similar analytical techniques. The facilities both tested the samples’ potency in milligrams of THC per serving. One muffin sample tested at more than double the THC milligrams per serving at one lab, versus the other. Tests on dried flower showed potency percentage differences of 42 percent in one sample. This information will help improve testing, according to Erika McConnell, director of the Alaska Marijuana Control Office. “I am confident this report will help the working group accomplish their mission to offer some solid recommendations to the Marijuana Control Board that will give consumers confidence in the system; protect public safety, health and welfare; and allow the industry to move forward in a way that is also good for licensed establishments,” McConnell said. “Standardization of processes is what we need to do,” said Cary Carrigan, executive director of the Alaska Marijuana Industry Association. “We are nowhere near that in this industry yet.” INCONSISTENT LABORATORY

NEW YORK HEALTH DEPT. RECOMMENDS LEGALIZING CANNABIS by Gov. Andrew Cuomo will recommend “a regulated, legal marijuana program be available to adults in the state,” the New York health commissioner said on June 18. The announcement by Commissioner Howard Zucker came after Gov. Cuomo’s position on Cannabis softened. In recent months, Cuomo has claimed the “facts have changed” around Cannabis. In January he commissioned a report with the mission of determining the consequences of legalization efforts in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Zucker said the group had considered a wide range of issues including the age of allowed use, impaired driving, production, and distribution. They concluded that legal marijuana could be done statewide. A STUDY COMMISSIONED

“We looked at the pros, we looked at the cons, and when we were done, we realized that the pros outweighed the cons,” Zucker said. “We have new facts.”

CALIFORNIA SHOPS FACE POSSIBLE WEED SHORTAGE AFTER JULY 1

won’t have to worry about whether products are laced with pesticides and other contaminants. They’ll also be able to see how potent their products are, CALIFORNIA CANNABIS CONSUMERS

where they originated, and the ingredients used in infused edibles. That all comes true July 1, once new state-mandated safety standards kick in. That’s the good news. The bad news is, shops might be looking at a Cannabis shortage after that point, reports The Mercury News. Lots of medical marijuana shops loaded up on inventory late last year. That’s before California, on January 1, launched legal recreational sales — and imposed hundreds of pages of new rules for the industry. Regulators gave businesses a six-month grace period to sell off old stock. But sales have been slower than expected — partially, at least, due to high taxation — and many shops have lots of unsold inventory, said Josh Drayton of the California Cannabis Industry Association. None of that inventory can legally be sold after July 1; it must be destroyed, according to regulators. All weed after that point must have gone through the stringent testing and labeling required by the new recreational marijuana law. Hence, the possible weed shortage.

DAB DEBATE Discussing the role of Cannabis concentrates in the modern era

W

hen it comes to modern hash, I believe people judge the torch itself more than anything else in the dabbing process. This, I can understand, given the history of what torches have been used for. But now that dabbing hash is here to stay, we need to shift the perspective of these flamethrowers. For better or worse, the quickest and best way to heat your banger is a torch. Now that hash and dabbing have become more mainstream, there are some amazing alternatives being developed to work without a torch, but in my opinion, none of them are fully competitive with a torch. A torch is the best tool, but it’s also a great responsibility. Just like any other power tool, when you use one you need to be responsible for yourself and the others around you. In terms of production, hash plays an important role that you might not have considered before – it takes pressure off farmers to continuously boost the potency of the Cannabis they are growing. A process that normally involves constantly feeding your Cannabis with chemical steroid-like nutrients and salts. Isn’t it a better idea to grow normal, non-steroid weed and then just make it into hash for the people who prefer stronger? By not needing to focus only on potency, producers can develop richer terpene profiles for their harvest. Hash also allows the potential for varieties of Cannabis that are not very aesthetically pleasing but are rich in important terpenes or other medicinal qualities. Those more practical strains (with less bag appeal) wouldn’t have much of a future without hash to turn them into something beautiful.

HASH TAKES PRESSURE OFF FARMERS TO CONTINUOUSLY BOOST THE POTENCY OF THE CANNABIS THEY ARE GROWING.

18/JUly 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

In my opinion, hash is also much more efficient and easier on your lungs when consumed properly at a low temperature. Through extracts, you are using a smaller amount of product less often than you would with just flower. However, I should note that if potency is an issue the best idea is to take a tolerance break when you can. You can use the money you save from the break to be pickier with your hash and flower if/when you start again. I can never understand why dabbing extracts is so taboo and yet vaping worse quality oil in carts is the hippest trend. I’ve found that some people don’t make the connection between what’s in the carts and dabbing concentrates. Even though what’s in the cartridge is normally worse quality oil than you would dab, despite being a higher price and being disposable. The whole dabbing process can seem quite complicated, so I call on budtenders everywhere to be patient yet persistent when explaining the importance of low temp dabbing and responsible torch use. The truth is, be picky with every product that you consume, whether it’s food, drink, or Cannabis. Let’s not forget how hard it is to find an organic beer or cider despite both those crops relying on use of the pesticides and herbicides to be grown. We’ve already seen a huge movement by consumers away from conventionally (somehow that means with chemicals) farmed products. As our understanding of these chemicals progresses hopefully they are removed from all of our production systems! Remember that we are all role models for Cannabis regardless of if we work in the industry, educate and look out for each other. There are no shortage of challenges these days, seek out how you can contribute to the solutions; act collectively and constructively.

SNOOP DOGG By PACER STACKTRAIN | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN Born Calvin Broadus in 1971, Snoop grew up in Long Beach, California and became one of the most beloved rappers of all time when he launched his career as an MC on Dr. Dre’s masterpiece, The Chronic in 1992. The album is a perfect tribute to the high-grade Cannabis that was just becoming more readily available in the early 90s due to advanced clandestine hydroponic growing techniques. It was this creative fuel (and MTV) that set a new course in hip-hop and made both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg instant celebrities. Snoop isn’t just an obvious choice because of his celebrity, though; he’s been a very important stabilizing force and voice in our movement for almost three decades. As a musician, actor, producer, businessman, spokesperson, talk show host and football coach – throughout each of his endeavors - he’s publicly embraced Cannabis unlike any other celebrity. And all the while, he’s done it his way with his own unique swagger, helping millions of Americans and others around the world rethink how they feel about this sacred herb. Perhaps one of the main reasons that Snoop been such a force for the normalization Cannabis culture in the United States is that he’s been arrested for Cannabis possession several times throughout his life. Yes, he’s been persecuted for the use Cannabis throughout his 30-year career, but that hasn’t kept him from speaking out about reform. “It’s from the earth,” Snoop told GQ in 2013. “It’s not some man-made shit. It’s actually growing from the ground straight to you, so it’s just like eating a vegetable. You know what I’m saying? Cancer and diseases that never had a cure, now all of a sudden you got people taking chemotherapy, and they’re also having a toke, and they live longer.“ At Montreal’s C2 technology conference in May of this year, he was asked by a moderator what he thought about people getting rich off of Cannabis while people of color are incarcerated in an unfair and unjust system. “I want to be their voice,” Snoop said. “I just don’t want to be making profits when they are in jail. As a black man, I’ve been to jail for marijuana.” But what makes Snoop one of our favorite advocates

22/JULY 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

In 2016, Snoop granted a 39-second photoshoot with our photographer, Daniel Berman, before a meet and greet for his Leafs by Snoop product line at Have a Heart in Seattle.

Snoop is about as synonymous with Cannabis as anyone on the planet. of all time? He’s one of the world’s great entertainers and he likes to get high as much as we do….err, okay maybe a little bit more than we do.

fOUR LEGENDARY SNOOP smoke stories 1. Snoop has celebrated 4/20 in Amsterdam with Willie Nelson (the two apparently visited several coffee shops together during the day). 2. He once smoked so much weed in his Melbourne hotel room that they had to call the fire department. 3. He admitted he smoked a blunt in the White House (no word on whether it was the Obama years but we’re betting on it). 4. Snoop recently revealed it was Tupac who first introduced him to blunts (at the wrap party for Poetic Justice, no less). The story of Snoop Dogg is far from over, and he can now add media mogul to his long list of accomplishments after

launching MerryJane, a sort of HuffPost for Cannabis. In the realm of Cannabis finance, Snoop is on track to be one of the biggest venture capitalists in the industry. In 2015 he founded Casa Verde Investments, which is funding startups in Cannabis to the tune of $45 million dollars (and counting). Finally, he has his own flower company, Leafs by Snoop. And of course, there have been several strains named after him, particularly the Master Kush x Blue Dream combo “Snoop’s Dream.” It can sometimes be easy to forget just how much stigma was placed on Cannabis consumption in the early 90s when Snoop and Dre started waxing poetic about smoking the best herb they could find. Who knows where legalization would be today if it weren’t for artists like Snoop Dogg who stuck their necks out when it wasn’t cool to do so.

“I WANT TO BE THEIR VOICE,” SNOOP SAID. “I JUST DON’T WANT TO BE MAKING PROFITS WHEN THEY ARE IN JAIL. AS A BLACK MAN, I’VE BEEN TO JAIL FOR MARIJUANA.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance...

budtender of the month

INTERVIEW by WES ABNEY | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN

Each month, the Northwest Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Northwest Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

OLIVIA PERRY HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR SOMEONE? It’s harder in 502 than it was in medical, but I still really work to try to bring a personal and caring experience to the recreational market. I still treat people closer to patients than I do just a customer, and I really try to ask a lot of questions and give people a lot of options. I to make it be more than just a transaction. I usually ask indica or sativa, and their budget, then I start pulling things out that I have smoked or somebody I trust has smoked and has approved of. I don’t very often recommend things that I don’t know anything about. Sometimes people come in saying I want to feel like “this” and you have to translate that into indica, sativa, or hybrid and a strain, so it can take a little bit of work and research, but I haven’t been stumped yet, I always find the strain.

OLIVIA PERRY is a heritage medical Cannabis

budtender and edible artist who specialized in delicious infused chocolate truffles! She has been budtending for years and meaningfully connects with customers, sharing her experience and passion for Cannabis by providing advice and helping consumers find the best products for their needs.

“SOMETIMES PEOPLE COME IN SAYING ‘I WANT TO FEEL LIKE THIS’ AND YOU HAVE TO TRANSLATE THAT INTO INDICA, SATIVA, OR HYBRID AND A STRAIN...”

26/july 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? I actually wasn’t even a high school stoner. I first tried it when I was 14, but I didn’t start using it regularly until I was in college. Being around it more, I found that it was not only a recreational type of thing but that it helped me a lot with medicinal values. I have a very grateful connection with Cannabis because it helps my daily life, my insomnia, anxiety and more. Pot is fun, but it’s not just fun for me. It’s important and that’s why I was so happy to jump into the business with edibles and budtending because I was able to start helping other people experience the same type of relief I did.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A BUDTENDER? I’ve been budtending since medical days when we were able to have more one-onone time with patients. I also got to rep my edibles and the perspective of an educated Cannabis consumer helping others to be educated. Being a budtender allows me to be an advocate and promote Cannabis in a positive way, and being helpful to customers is a great way to do that.

WHY DO YOU LIKE WORKING AT DIEGO PELLICER?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

It is a really nice environment and it’s gorgeous in there. It’s also a really nice place to work, everybody is pretty chill, and I get to do my own thing, and sell weed. It’s obviously super cool to get to say that the place I work is what comes up first if you Google “Luxury Pot Shop” and our video comes up. We have the reigning title for the most luxurious pot shop, and come on, it’s fun. My title is Cannabis Liaison!

Getting to see all the new stuff first! I love getting orders from my favorite brands and seeing new goodies. It’s like Christmas at least once a week. The other thing I enjoy is when we have exciting new products to share. I love getting to tell people about it all day, I can’t contain myself.

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION IN THE KITCHEN?

All the things! I literally come home, and pop open a medicated beverage and take a dab and then smoke a joint and then take another dab. Dabbing is probably the way I medicate the most, but I can’t pass up smoking flower. It’s different, I need the full plant benefits that you don’t get from dabs. You have to smoke a doobie a day!

I’m a classically trained chocolatier. I used to work in a little chocolate shop, and I was a freelance medible maker for about five years in MMJ. That’s how I’m known. I’m trying to spread knowledge and steer people towards the idea that you can get a delicious dessert that happens to have weed in it.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF WORK? Smoking weed! I love to hang out with my doggy, she’s my best friend. We go on walks and have lazy days in bed together. Now that it’s nicer out, I love day trips and going to Marymoore Park or Rattlesnake Point for day hikes. I love art in all forms. I draw and I do makeup charts on myself, draw faces and whatever inspires me at the time. I like to create and make other people happy in whatever capacity that may be, and I like getting into the kitchen, it’s fun for me!

INTERVIEW by SIMONE FISCHER @SIMONEFISCHERR | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN @BERMANPHOTOS

BREEDER MONTH OF THE Shane Yoakam

What is your least favorite aspect of breeding? People seem to keep breed-

When did you start growing Cannabis? I had a fascination with Cannabis in my

teens. The first plant I ever grew ended up being a big male. In my late teens, I was running a hemp store and during that time Prop 215 was being set up. One evening I got a phone call from Jack Herer. He told me to stop selling hemp books and products and being treated like a criminal – and come get involved with medical marijuana in Oregon. [Then,] around 2000 is when I really got involved with growing Cannabis.

When did you start breeding Cannabis? The driving factor to start breeding was

when I got my medical card. It was really early in the program and back then, there wasn’t much genetic material being traded. People were keeping everything to themselves and not talking – it was a completely different era and time. When I got my medical card, I could grow Cannabis, but I didn’t know where to get clones or seeds - so growers like myself were pretty much on their own. There were all sorts of patients coming onto the program but there weren’t any resources or genetic diversity to choose from. And most of the varieties that were going around weren’t what I was looking for. It was all Blueberry, Beastir Bag Seed, Trainwreck and Trinity – a lot of Dutch stuff floating around. I began teaming up with TGA Genetics because they were creating new strains – it was different than everybody else. TGA in the original days was started as a medical collective to create great genetics for ourselves and share with the patients. Those were our core values and tasks. I eventually parted ways and continued expanding my genetic library.

Your work alongside T.G.A helped build the foundation of craft-medical Cannabis in Oregon. What is your favorite aspect of breeding? I wanted to

go beyond THC and potency because things like anthocyanins are important. Anthocyanin-rich foods, blueberries, pomegranates and acai, all contain anti-oxidants, which are powerful tools for health. I read about these over 12 years ago along with flavonoids. Finally, these details are coming full-circle and more people are talking about them. I love the research. In the original T.G.A days, we were seeking fruit flavors – but weren’t associating them with terpenes. We didn’t have the research or papers that we have now. Plus, I love creating strains that people enjoy. It’s heartwarming to hear stories on how your cultivars helped someone. It’s not about winning cups; it’s the science and helping people. That’s what excites me and pushes me to keep working with Cannabis.

ing with the same genetic material, which ultimately puts you in a corner diversity-wise. Because of poor breeding practices that decrease the plant’s hardiness, plants these days are more vulnerable to pathogens, viruses, and viroids such as Fusarium and mosaics that we see quickly spreading in the gene pool and infecting nurseries. Solid breeding takes years of work and also requires sacrifice. Your entire room might get pollinated or variables you didn’t consider. Up until recently, people didn’t want to invest in the research of Cannabis, which has it made it really tough for breeders because science accelerates both sides.

What WAs the first strain you created & favorite cultivar you HAve bred?

The Lemon Freeze. It was Jack’s Cleaner crossed to Jack’s Cleaner Blueberry (JCBX by JCB). Which was a large backcrossing project. I really liked the lemon terpenes from the Jack’s Cleaner at the time, and the Blueberry softened it up a bit and added more structure. Shortly after that, I was lucky enough to get some true purple genetics and I started working with the Black Russian bred by Nebu. Since I moved out to the West Coast, I was seeking purple Cannabis. That’s when I created the Neon Super Skunk and the Black Cherry. Finally, Double Purple Doja (DPD) was created and that’s probably my favorite strain I ever created for several reasons. It has a special place in my heart and I was putting a lot of love and energy into the project – so I knew it was going to be special. The DPD inspired me to do a lot of research on genetics. It’s thrilling and humbling to make something for a small community like Oregon. I wanted to make purple more prominent in my progeny and when you make purple strains; you get a ton of green phenotypes. Originally, colors in Cannabis were recessive – back then colors weren’t dominant in the progeny. It was just practice and technique, but through research, I found anthocyanins were responsible for causing purple expression in Cannabis. To me, it’s about what you have that sets you apart from the rest of the industry.

Thoughts on protecting your strain library in a fast-evolving industry?

You can start with trademarking your brand, but right now it’s limited to find where out where to start. You can only do state trademarks - that allow you to do it. Genetic markers are coming online and things are rapidly changing. The research is super important, which is why true breeding is so expensive. It all boils down to money. If I have a patent on my strain and you violate my patent - you go to court and see who can outspend who. It might cost me millions of dollars to protect my patent, so in order to have a patent - you must have a large backing. Other entities are trying to secure umbrella patents that cover a wide range of strains, which is completely scary. That’s why it’s important to find the right team. Genetically sequencing your work is really important because you have your genetic material backed up. It’s hard to find my work for a reason, but at the same time, it’s equally important to layout the history and lineage of genetics. It’s tricky to say the least.

Shane Yoakam is a low-key breeding enigma known as Suny Cheba during prohibition times. Yoakam is one of the

premier breeders of the Cannabis industry and responsible for creating such strains as Lemon Freeze, Double Purple Doja and Black Cherry. Currently, he’s a genetic consultant for large-scale agricultural entities at Dutch Consulting Company, headed by Sjoerd Broeks (The Dutchman, Genefinder OG). Yoakam was also responsible for helping to amend Measure 91, which made it so Cannabis seed stock could be legally sold in Oregon. Yoakam’s genetic work is rare and difficult to find – positioning him as one of the most sought-after creators of limited Cannabis genetics.

JULY 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

DEGENERATE FLAME OFF | JUNE 9-10, 2018 | CEDARVILLE LODGE, PORTLAND

DFO Story & Photos by Adam Gregory/TerpTalk.tv

32/july 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Decades ago, in the infancy of functional glass art, the place to find the best pieces were the parking lots outside Grateful Dead shows. Artists would tour along with the Dead, selling their glassware out of trunks and off tailgates to get by. It was all very underground. There were no corporate sponsorships or social media accounts for artists with 100,000+ followers. But times, and laws, change. The Pacific coast is legalized. Legitimate businesses, from farms to dispensaries to glass manufacturers, have been opening and growing as a result of these changes. The stigma is lifting, and we are seeing more events like the Degenerate Flame Off (DFO) bring glass art from the underground to a wider audience. This year, DFO was held on June 9-10 in Gresham,

OR. Instead of showing their work in a parking lot, DFO brought artists, collectors, buyers, and fans from all around the world to Cedarville Lodge, where they filled the parking area and spilled over into the adjoining Wal-Mart parking lot. What’s more mainstream than that? As big glass events go, DFO is one of the biggest. This is where youu will find a staggering amount of art being shown and made on the spot. Over 60 artists, including names like Bob Snodgrass, Robert Mickelson, Darby Holm, Mike Luna, Kaj Beck, Laceface, Jolex, Coyle, AKM, Salt, Banjo, and so many more created or collaborated on pieces over the weekend, giving festival goers an up close and personal demonstration of the process behind the work of their favorite artists.

THE BORO D E R BY Spending any kind of time around this community of artists gives you a sense of just how much community means to them. It’s called the DFO Family Reunion for a reason. That sense of community extends beyond the glass world and can be seen in one of the bigger draws for artists and fans alike, the Boro Derby. The Boro Derby came to be in 2012 when Spokane, WA glass artist Brandon Welk and owner of Piece of Mind and Satori ,Justin Wilson, put their heads together. It was Welk’s idea for the Derby, where artists create glass cars to race down traditional Pinewood Derby tracks. Wilson had a plan for how the Cannabis community could give back to the community-at-large, with the Derby being one of the prime fundraisers.

This idea became the Evergreen State Project, a nonprofit that has donated to hospitals, nurseries, shelters and struggling families in Spokane, WA and around the state of Washington. In the past, Derby events were held as standalone events but over time they wanted to allow access to more artists which led to them taking their show to Glass Vegas. Now, Adam Hand and Richard Made of Handmade Apparel are running Boro Derby qualifiers around the country for the finals in Las Vegas at the Derby in the Desert in conjunction with Glass Vegas. The Derby has grown beyond Washington and is becoming a fixture at glass events and giving artist another way to show off their talents and give back.

D E G E N E R AT E FLAME OFF Walking around the Cedarville Lodge grounds you could find talent sitting under almost every tree, mostly trying to escape the heavy rains that blessed DFO weekend. But it’s true. There were people showing off heady work everywhere you looked. Like artists demonstrating their coldwork, Steve Bishov and T. Toth Glass, from Philadelphia and Hungary respectively. And like Kiebler out of Baltimore, MD, who brought his “U.S. Blues” inspired piece to DFO. Kiebler traveled around the country with the Grateful Dead for over a decade, and he created his 6.5-pound piece with that time in mind. “[Traveling with the Dead is] actually where I met the people that taught me to blow glass, and how I wound up here,” Kiebler said. Another talented artist demoing her work was Shayla Windstar Behrman of Windstar Glass (@windstar_glass) out of Pueblo, CO. She uses stringers to paint scenes and characters onto the surface of her pieces. One piece she created for DFO 2018, featuring a terrapin with a VW bus for a shell traveling through a forest, was inspired by her childhood. “I grew up on a bus with hippie parents, listening to the GratefulDead…and since I was coming to Oregon [for DFO] I thought conifers would be wonderful,” Behrman said. Perhaps the most elaborate piece on display was the M710 Galactic Mini Phaser, built in Florida as a collaboration between a team of eight artists from Mickelson Studios and Subliminal Glass. This impressive work features 100 rounds of ammunition, a custom glass butane torch, ignition key dabber, matching pendant, display stand, metal case, and all the glass on it is UV reactive. The amount of love that went into this piece is apparent everywhere you look. There was plenty of talent to be found at DFO 2018. All these amazing people scattered all over the map came to one place to show what they can do. The talent was so concentrated and intense sometimes that you almost needed special glasses to watch it. Kind of like a white-hot torch, or that eclipse last year. With wider acceptance of Cannabis culture spreading all the time, you can expect to find DFO coming back year after year after to help keep the glass family tight and show off the new and exciting ways these artists are developing their talents.

PURPLE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS HONEY NUGS 36/JUly 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

THESE LITTLE-ROUNDED NUGS ARE PERFECT PERSONAL BONG OR BOWL TOKE SIZE, AND A ONE AND DONE MENTALITY IS GREAT FOR A SESH, BUT DON’T EXPECT TO RUSH IT.

STRAIN OF THE MONTH By WES ABNEY |PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN @BERMANPHOTOS

D

ense balls of infused Cannabis goodness tease with a citrus chocolate zest that rise from melty layers of oil and kief melt and burn into a delicious Purple Pineapple Express flower. Honey nugs, also commonly referred to as caviar, are both great descriptors for concentrate infused flowers. Combining the best of the flower and concentrate world, honey nugs are shaped and rolled in oil to develop a sticky middle layer around the bud, and then coated in kief to slow the burning process and allow both layers of oil to melt into the flower. The end result is a slow burning, big toking bowl of bud and oil that deliver truly heady rips. These little-rounded nugs are perfect personal bong or bowl toke size, and a one and done mentality is great for a sesh, but don’t expect to rush it. Smoking caviar is an exercise in patience and pleasure, as the bowl burns slowly and taking smaller, rhythmic tokes prevents flare-ups of fire that can scorch the bowl. It can also help to rough up the ball and open up the internal surface area to flame to get the flame moving more quickly. From the first toke, the smoke is heavy and rolling in as the three layers of Cannabis burn together. Smoking oil is always an interesting feeling, with a high that rushes straight to the head and leaves the SkagitOrganics.net tongue tingling with a thicker than air sweet aftertaste. The @SkagitOrganics sweet citrusy smoke imparts a long-lasting, mind buzzing stoney high that’s a little bit dabbed out, but with the flower effects thrown in for good measure. Skagit Valley Organics also produce a full line of THC and CBD RSO, distillate, and hash pressed rosin, with a focus on full plant concentrates and organic extraction methods. WAM OIL Lemon Remedy CO2 Oil

DABBING 101 Concentrates are extractions of Cannabis

produced with or without a solvent such as butane, ethanol or CO2. Anyone consuming concentrates for the first time should do so with extreme caution.

Dabbing is the act of vaporizing Cannabis

concentrate and inhaling the vapor for medicinal or recreational effects. The vapor acts as a quick and easy delivery system for Cannabinoids, and is not meant to be held in for longer than three to five seconds. Dabbing can involve a torch and a vaporization surface, commonly called a nail, attached to a water pipe. The nail is heated until hot before a small amount of concentrate is touched to the surface. Nails can be quartz or titanium, and heated externally or by a plug-in heating element, called an e-nail. The user inhales through a water pipe and the vapor is exhaled without excessive smoke or coughing, assuming a proper dosage. Patients can also use dab pens or vapor cartridges, which allow for vaporizing in a portable manner and don’t rely on having a torch.

Temperature is critical.

Concentrates that are dabbed too hot will burn off the terpenes, leaving a bland taste behind. Concentrates that are dabbed too cool might leave pooled residue and not fully vaporize. The best way to reach a happy medium is to use a carb cap, which sits on top of a nail once a dab is applied and holds heat and vapor in. A carb cap is designed to vaporize an extract at the lowest possible temperature. I find that letting the nail cool down sufficiently and then using the carb cap will produce a flavorful, fully vaporized dab. Solventless extracts such as full melt bubble hash/ice wax should be dabbed at slightly higher temperatures. To determine whether your temp is right, check the color of the residue. If it’s blackish, the dab was taken too hot. If the residue is a light brown, it means the dab was vaporized at the optimal temperature. Experiment again!

THC percentages can range from 20 to 90 percent THC, and

can easily overwhelm first-timers or even more experienced users. Start with just a grain of rice-sized piece of concentrate or smaller and go from there, understanding that you can always dab more!

Exhale within 3-5 seconds because you’re not absorbing more cannabinoids, you’re just depriving your lungs of oxyen.

ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY IS THAT NEW PRODUCTS AND INNOVATIONS ARE CONSTANTLY EMERGING. The downside of this breakneck pace can be a lack of information, especially for average users. The perfect example of this knowledge delay has to be Cannabis concentrates. While most veteran patients are familiar with the likes of Rick Simpson and high-grade bubble hash, the dabbing era has caught many by surprise. A fad no more. This primer breaks down the many types of concentrates, attributes to look for (and avoid) and common lingo and prices you should expect.

CARTRIDGES Guide and reviews by Wes Abney | Photos by Daniel Berman

THERE ARE A COUPLE BASIC RULES TO ENJOY THE BEST EXPERIENCE WITH A CARTRIDGE.

First, ask the budtender if it is cut with any solvent, or look on the packaging. We recommend avoiding anything cut with Propylene Glycol, especially for patients, because there are safer and healthier options available. Also, avoid anything with an artificial sounding flavor like Blue Raspberry or Waffles. Look at the vape package to see if the flavor is naturally derived, and if so, go for it. While there are no rules governing flavors in E-cigarettes or Cannabis cartridges currently, we feel that strain specific and naturally processed options are the best! Vaporization can be one of the most desirable and pleasurable ways to consume Cannabis, especially when discretion counts. You should not vape indoors or where ever it is specifically mentioned, such as on an airplane or bus. Feel free to use outdoors when your vapor will not bother others or be near children. Consumers will find a variety of battery options, from disposable types that have a non-rechargable battery and last about 200 hits, to ones with USB charging capabilities and changable cartridges.

HYDROCARBON EXTRACTION forces the solvent over plant material at high pressure, stripping the Cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and flavonoids from the plant and concentrating them into a delicious and beautiful extracted oil.

HYDROCARBON EXTRACTION refers to Cannabis

concentrate processed with a solvent like butane or propane that is hydrocarbon based. Properly processed in a safe environment with medicinal grade solvent, hydrocarbon extracts can be some of the highest quality and tastiest extracts on the market. BHO or PHO are made by forcing the solvent over plant material at high pressure, stripping the Cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and flavonoids from the plant and concentrating them into a delicious and beautiful extracted oil. BHO is known for capturing the essence of a strain, especially when using all nug-run material or live-resin style, which involves fresh frozen Cannabis. Propane is often present in BHO extracts, as many processors use a blend of the two gasses. Pure PHO tends to have a lighter and more orange color and can generate a fluffy consistency that doesn’t appear with BHO. Propane is a quality solvent and can be purged from the extract in a shorter time and at lower temperatures than butane, which can help preserve terpenes and flavors. When flowers are processed into concentrates, they need to be purged of residual solvents to be safe for consumption. There are many harmful chemicals that can end up in the oil if it isn’t processed properly, and you should only buy tested and safe concentrates for consumption. Purging through heat and pressure is what removes the solvents, leaving only the delicious oil we all love to dab. It’s also important to remember that with all concentrates, you are taking a large amount of plant matter and “concentrating” it into a small amount of oil. This takes the “good” aspects we desire, the Cannabinoids and flavors, but will also transfer anything “bad,” like pesticides or chemicals. Look for concentrates that are processed with material from sustainable and conscious farms, and never be afraid to ask for test results to ensure your oil is clean, and tasty!

The flavor is a mellow skunky bubblegum, but the effects are huge, with dabs exhaling lightly but rushing into the mind and body with an overwhelming THC high balanced nicely by all the CBD present. This THCA has enough flavor to be dabbed solo, or paired with the right terps for a truly tasty and powerful dab!

DISTILLATE 46/july 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Distillate can be thought of as a Cannabis essential oil that is pure of residual solvents, including those from the starting material, and can be used for dabbing, cooking edibles, as a vapor cartridge or more. Distillate is sold either in a “raw” form, which is mostly flavor free or can be infused with Cannabisderived terpenes or natural fruit terpenes. As always, we don’t recommend consuming anything with unnatural or artificial flavoring, so if the flavor sounds fake, don’t try it. The best option for a tasty distillate dab is to add natural terpenes derived from Cannabis to the oil, making for an extremely tasty dab!

This FECO or RSO is lightly sweet and has an uplifting high from the Dutch Treat parentage and offers a balanced but lightly heady high that has a many of medicinal values. Available in high CBD and THC versions, strainspecific, and in Original or Gold versions, and always triple filtered and post-pure filtered, this is a product that you can feel safe consuming.

of beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids that are successful in treating a huge variety of conditions. It should only be made with pure alcohol, food-grade ethanol or grain alcohol, and should be properly purged of residual alcohol before ingestion. FECO should never be vaporized or dabbed because inhaling alcohol is bad for the central nervous system and the brain. When eaten, the alcohol is safe for use. While FECO should be made available at a compassion rate, the average price is $25 to $50 per gram in most recreational dispensaries and it can go higher. FECO pulls a wide range

in the range of 40-70 percent THC, meaning it has 400-700 mg of overall cannabinoids present per gram. Often the oil comes in CBD-dominant, THC-dominant or 1:1 ratios of THC and CBD, or can have a cannabinoid blend specific to the strain it is extracted from. Dosing FECO begins with a drop of the oil the size of a grain of rice, and can be consumed raw or in a capsule form. To help common ailments and treatments of pain this dose size is a perfect starter, and can be built up from there to larger amounts. FECO is often

to treat cancer or other life threatening ailments, a more rigorous dosing protocol of FECO is recommended. This can mean up to a gram of oil or more a day, which is a dose that often comes with “Green Sickness, which is an overwhelming response to the massive amount of cannabinoids the body is taking in. This can lead to anxiety, nausea and general discomfort, but it is also masking what is happening internally. The cannabinoids are going to work. Those interested in treating a terminal illness with FECO should look into dosing schedules that slowly build up tolerance, and ensure that they are prepared fully before starting a treatment plan. A FIRST FOR THIS ISSUE is the Moroccan-style hash of Jerry Whiting and LeBlanc CNE, who we have featured before for his tumbled hash methods that are thousands of years old. What makes this issue special is the Hemp-hash, a first in NW Leaf publishing history. The CBD rich hash is pulled from select Oregon Hemp chemovars known for producing flavorful colas rich in CBD trichomes, and this hash is full of full plant medicinal values straight from a plant that is spreading across the country. Check out our review below, and all the great solventless examples of concentrates we have gathered for you!

These beautiful concentrates are made in a traditional method used for centuries by heating and pressing and rolling hash or kief (in this case ice water extracted bubble has) until it forms a melty resinous texture and compresses, which reveals new flavors and changes the dynamic of the high. This hash is easily storable and ageable, with reserve stocks of hash known to cure and develop like wine over the course of years. The Death Star Temple Ball has floral and rich notes of chocolate and sweet skunk. The hash melts easily and has a rich, smooth and layered flavor, and a relaxing high that chills the body while imparting a happy CBG mood-elevating high.

1

Turn the bag inside out using a pair of forceps, Why? it puts the seam on the inside of the bag and allows more oil to leave the bag in the pressing process and creates a cleaner separation, where the thread can potentially hold the oil in.

2

Pack the bags, removing large stems and ending up with 0.3 to 0.5 gram nugs, aiming to pack the bag out evenly so that it squishes evenly and you get even expansion across everything. These 2x3’s have 4 grams, we run 4/20 grams of these. We tamp down the bud until it is a snug pack.

3

Placement. Generally we will fold over the last bit of excess, and we place the bag directly on the center of the plates, so it slides into the plates and holds in place.

This is our manual setup, so you hand pump and follow the gauge, and with this manual press, we run up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, and that starts the process of mechanical separation, and starts the timer for exposure time. We gradually increase pressure every 15 seconds for about 45 seconds to one minute, to have peace of mind that everything has been extracted out, then release and pull out.

5

Remove bag immediately and peel off parchment paper, then use a scraping tool to collect the Rosin from the parchment paper. We use a skillet tool, but generally a good skinny flat pointed dabber or a Rosin stamp for collection works well.

6

Collect the material into a ball through gentle pulling of the oil from the paper or mesh with a dab tool. If polishing is chosen, press the oil into a finer mesh and re-squish to polish If needed.

TERP TALK WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START THIS?

Interview by Wes Abney | Photos by Terp Talk

MICHAEL THOMPSON

is the founder and President of Terp Talk, a media company focused on provided video, digital and in-person educational content from the world of Cannabis. He had the idea for the company while working as a budtender at Satori North in Spokane and has developed it over the last two years into a reality! We sat down with him to talk about why he started Terp Talk, what the goals of the company for, and what his roots as a budtender mean for his future.

54/july 2018 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

The original idea came in December 2016, I was sitting with a friend and wanting to educate consumers on what’s really important about Cannabis. Basically, we sell Cannabis every day as budtenders, and we always heard high THC rumors and requests and people not really knowing what they’re looking for.

HOW DID THE TV ASPECT COME TO LIFE? We wanted to give consumers a view into the 502-market and with the help of farms and processing facilities we’ve been able to create educational videos, our original format, and then morphed those into facility tour videos. We wanted to give people a voice from the producer/processor side to be able to get messages to consumers. And with videos in the store, it’s a great way for companies to get products into the eyes of consumers.

HOW DO YOU PICK WHAT COMPANIES YOU FEATURE, AND WHAT VALUES DO YOU TRY TO SEND? A lot of people don’t know if they can trust the 502-market. So when I tell someone a company doesn’t spray chemicals and only uses beneficial bugs, it’s easy to take them to the TV and show them a video tour of the company. We look for companies that are growing naturally and sustainably, to spread knowledge and break down the stigma, both of the plant and commercial farming.

SATORI NORTH IN SPOKANE IS WHERE YOU CURRENTLY ARE DOING THE TEST PROGRAM. WE HEARD THAT YOU ALSO HAVE A TERPENE BAR! HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? The terpene table started as an idea to help budtenders at an event we threw, to help them become more knowledgeable about terps and the plant. It was such a hit that we moved it into the store to get customers involved. A lot of people are educated about the plant, but terpenes and the entourage effect are what really drive the high, and now we are spreading that knowledge every day!

AND YOU STILL BUDTEND, AND MORE, AT SATORI. WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THE INDUSTRY, AND WHAT KEEPS YOU HERE? I started budtending at 25 in September 2016. I started behind the counter and wanted to do more and had the support to do more because of Satori and the owner Justin Wilson. So, the idea for the show and Terp Talk has now developed into a full-on video production company and terpene bars! It’s also a way for me to express my love of the plant and help others, education is a big part of what I like to do. I like budtending because I get to talk with customers all day, interact and help people out. There’s nothing more rewarding than when you can use the knowledge you’ve worked so hard to learn, and apply that to someone’s life. Now at Satori, I help with marketing, social media, ads, vendor relations; I do a lot more than budtend, but I get behind the counter when I need to be, and my goal is one day to be 100 percent Terp Talk focused.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF TERP TALK? We want to be content creators, making videos for digital and written content in local magazines. We want to take the terp table onto a new level, and widen the whole program out into more stores. We’re working on becoming a media and ad agency for the market, hoping to go statewide and then national since we’re not 502 licensed, bringing good Cannabis content to the people with respect and education, not just big dabs.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR MORE COMPANIES AND BRANDS TO WORK WITH FOR EDUCATION? We’re actively looking for new farms to work with, working on videos almost constantly, and we do a lot of content for people to use on their platforms. There are five of us now, we recently added a videographer and a writer. We are looking to add more people to the team to expand, and once the demands and funds are there we will continue to grow! We are adding a cooking segment for infused meals and pairings, hosting events and pairing private events, hosting seshs in the future, and with the web, we’ll be adding blog posts about specific genetics and farms and breeders we come across and really push the written content as well.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOU? Youtube terptalktv is our channel and have our website terptalk.tv is getting reworked and launched soon! Check us out online, follow us on social media, and come by the Satori store to experience the terp bar and TV live in person! TERPTALK.TV

wner and Founder Mark Flanders began growing Cannabis legally in July 2014, leaving Boeing and starting a family business with his wife and son. One of the first licensed producers, Flanders was able to ride the initial wave of high prices, and then hold his product at a sustainable price point while producing about 70 pounds per month of flower. Prior to starting Green Rush, he was spending tens of thousands of dollars to have others process his material, and he decided to start a lab to bring the process in-house and turn his small-batch craft Cannabis into top shelf concentrates. He and Mike Molnick, also known as Dablife Mike, Green Rush’s Lab Manager and Lead Extractor had been friends for a while, and when Flanders offered a job running the lab in November Molnick jumped at it. The lab was built out for function and quality, with no expense spared, and today is running 20 pounds of fresh frozen material a day, making diamond sauce, THCA, distillate, live resin, shatter, snap and pull and crumble. “We cater to what the market wants while evolving and adapting to grow and be able to make a living in this industry,” Flanders explained. “I love it, the business, the Cannabis industry, what it brings. I love what I do and the people that work for me.” For Molnick, the passion for Cannabis is what

has driven his eight years of extraction experience, and it’s what bonds him and Flanders together, and keeps the team at Green Rush pumping out tons of product. “‘I’m just a weed nerd, totally into everything weed, and Mark is super fair, he’s not like most 502 owners, he’s a real weed head. He’s not just in it for the money, he also loves weed like me! We have that common bond in loving weed and not putting up with bullshit,” Molnick said with a chuckle. “Everyone on our crew smokes, they’re all actually potheads, so we don’t just have workers, we have a family and try to emphasize the love of Cannabis in the company.” The tidy facility in Everett is bustling with orders being filled and a constant wave of products churning out. Delicious strain specific blends have caught the attention of the Cannabis social media community, budtenders, and consumers alike, with people tuning in to see Molnick’s videos of diamonds and terp sauce pours. With a happy team, clean environment and the best equipment possible, it’s no surprise that the lab is churning out fire. “We try to do everything to the highest quality possible, we didn’t spare any expense on equipment. We’re using Cascade Science ovens and an Iron Fist extractor that I had custom built to my specs, and as

Owner and Founder Mark Flanders and Lab Manager Mike Molnick at their Everett, Wash. facility.

Royal Locktite far as the lab it’s another one of those things I can say we’ve put a lot of love into,” Molnick explained. By focusing on quality in and out, and a fair price, the Green Rush team has built a solid reputation quickly for dropping fire oil that is worthy of the hype. “We try to be fair, we want to be able to put out a product that we personally would not feel ripped off if we bought it ourselves and would want to dab ourselves,” Molnick said. “I feel like it’s a hippy dippy thing to say, but the love really does show. And not just for our company. The people I know that care about weed put out good products because they care, so it sounds mushy but it’s true. If you love weed you won’t put out bunk and be happy about it.” Not one to stay content, Flander’s has spent considerable time preparing for a new source of fresh frozen material to supplement the in-house garden and allow the company to process 60+ pounds a day of material, up to 20,000 pounds a year. The material will be loaded fresh frozen into refrigerated cargo containers and shipped to the processing facility, where it will transform into a variety of craft concentrates going to stores statewide. But with one eye on the future, Green Rush Extracts is focused on quality, and making sure that the brand standards don’t slip, ensuring the company will have a longevity based on consistency and craft. “There’s a whole lot of people that want to be the Burger King of pot. I see the future of Cannabis narrowing down like larger industries have, so if we’re going to stay competitive we really have to focus on boutique, quality stuff that will set us apart from the mass-produced Cannabis,” Molnick said excitedly. “The crazy thing is with how fast the industry is evolving and our age of information, Cannabis really is a boom, a green rush, no pun intended.”

I FEEL LIKE IT’S A HIPPY DIPPY THING TO SAY, BUT THE LOVE REALLY DOES SHOW. Green Rush Extracts Lab Manager Mike Molnick on what goes into their process.

DOES IT TAKE MORE WORK AND SKILL TO PROCESS SOLVENTLESS HASH THAN SOMETHING LIKE BHO?

PACIFIC NW ROOTS Interview by Wes Abney | Photos by Daniel Berman

The Arlington, WA company started back in medical and is

known for founder Ras Kaya Paul’s high-quality Cannabis genetics THE ENTIRE FACILITY HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH INTENTION, FROM THE LABORATORY-GRADE CLEAN ROOMS TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS, DOWN TO THE DEIONIZED WATER USED IN THE HASH PROCESS. As Kaya says,

“solventless hash is the sum of all the parts,” with each step taking precision and to ensure a highgrade final product. A single batch of 6-star dabbable solventless hash can take up to 20 hours of labor. From the time the plant is fresh frozen, to the 40-degree washroom stage, where team members in cold weather gear spend hours processing the plant material with ice, water, filtering bags, sieving and curing it into the purest solventless extraction available in the marketplace. We sat down with Kaya to talk about how his passion for Cannabis and health have led to PNW Roots organic practices, the choice to make solventless hash, and his message to consumers about how they view the Cannabis they choose to consume.

HOW DID PACIFIC NORTHWEST ROOTS GET STARTED?

It began in 2009, but I grew my first pot plant in 1995. It was when the first brick and mortar stores had opened up, and we were just trying to brand ourselves and present our products to the store. Nobody else was really being a brand at that point, in the transition from the underground into medical, and we wanted people to know who we were, to create an identity for ourselves so people could differentiate our products from the rest.

AS A BREEDER, GROWER AND PROCESSOR, YOU HAVE A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PLANT. WHERE DO THINGS BEGIN FOR YOU?

We start with genetics, and ours are unique, and once those are chosen our style is an engineered soil. We bring it to life with Korean natural farming methods, using organics combined with microbes and making homemade nutrient inputs. It’s really about microbe herding, bring the soil to life, feeding with naturally fermented additives like fruits, herbs and fish, and using natural pest controls with an integrated pest and pathogen management system. It’s a very thought out, sustainable method and it creates the highest-grade product.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO GO ALL NATURAL? Natural farmed flowers, just like with our food, are healthier for us. When you use microbes, you have nutrient dense foods. And using microbes to grow Cannabis will lead to a more powerful high and larger terpene profile that you don’t experience with most commercially cultivated Cannabis, or any Cannabis that is cultivated not using natural techniques. Just like how we value organic food versus fast food bullshit that has no value, filling your body with empty calories and not health. The real challenge is educating people to what healthy flowers and hash are and sharing it and getting it out there.

HASH IS THE SUM OF ALL THE PARTS” YOU CHOOSE TO ONLY USE NATURAL METHODS TO GROW THE FLOWER, AND IT CONTINUES IN THE ICE WATER HASH PROCESS. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO USE THAT METHOD OF EXTRACTION? Once the flower is done growing we continue with hash, using water and ice, sticking with the natural means. Add all those steps up and what you get is a product that is very unadulterated and a pure and natural expression of the plants terpene profiles and offers the end user the ultimate experience. The methods that we use are really advanced, and it allows us to capture the essence of that plant’s terpene expression. This is how the plant communicates with the world, the smell of that flower at its peak. We capture that by freezing it as soon as its harvested, using minimal, cold water and ice to pull that off the leaf, and there’s nothing that tastes like it.

We are very particular how we trim off the vine and very careful in handling. The material has to go into a frozen environment almost immediately and then every step is very manual. We put herbs in the bags, hand stir it in the washing machine. After we’ve extracted and pulled trichomes off, we work them by hand with sives, microplanes or whatever the tools. It’s very personal compared to hitting a button on a BHO machine that squirts out oils to purge and package. There’s 10 times more steps to make solventless, and each one takes hands-on and a real knowledge of how to work the material and what you’re going to get out of it.

IS SOLVENTLESS ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO?

It goes back to the farming, everyone knows how to make hash, but what’s the next level, the source material, it has to be just tops or it will reflect in the end product. With solvents, you can take things that aren’t the best and clean them and have a nice colored hash that wouldn’t be sellable as a water hash. Hydrocarbon has a higher yield and an easier process, but even with the cleanest BHO, you’ve ingested small amounts of things that aren’t great for you. With water hash, the material has to be perfect, and in the end product the effects are so much fuller and well rounded, your body eases into a full body stoned experience that lasts for hours.

WHAT IS THE CREATION PROCESS LIKE?

In a wash day, we will put in 10 hours just to wash it, and then another 10 hours in processing and packaging. That’s us in there paddling the hash around in the tubs, cleaning the bags, a lot of this is cleaning, you have to have an ultra-clean environment. Working in harsh environment as well, it’s 40 degrees in our hash and drying rooms, we’re working in very cold conditions, long hours, and there’s no way to take shortcuts.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WHERE THINGS ARE HEADING?

A race to the bottom, with people valuing quantity over quality. We’re trying to do the opposite. We want to bring value back into the herb and the process. It’s a young market and a lot of consumers are uneducated and unfamiliar because they only know what they’ve been shown. All they’ve seen is the quantity model serving bottom lines and not customers. But when they understand the process involved and the resulting effects of the product, then they will understand pricepoints. That’s when you understand the value. That’s our goal for the industry.

WHAT IS YOUR PITCH FOR QUALITY OVER QUANTITY?

We don’t want to just make smoke to fill your lungs. We want smoke to fill your spirit. We don’t want mindless consumers of unhealthy products, that’s not cool. If you’re going to feed your body good food then feed your mind and spirit good food. That’s what Cannabis is to us, take some time to relish the ritual and understand that there’s a ritual in the farming as well. We value the effect the plant has on our body, it’s really about loving ourselves, and we love the plant and our supporters and want to give them that same kind of love we give ourselves, that just seems right.

THE EASY CANNABIS COOKBOOK

60+ Sweet and Savory Cannabis Edible Recipes 152 pages | by Cheri Sicard | Rockridge Press | 2017 | $12.46 hardcover

C

heri Sicard has been called the “Martha Stewart of weed” by The Daily Beast.

That’s apropos, because Sicard has awesome knowledge about all aspects of Cannabis cooking. Now she’s served up a definitive guide the gourmet ganja-infused dishes with The Easy Cannabis Cookbook. The tome includes an introduction to the history and benefits of marijuana, and a fool-proof guide to finding your perfect edible dose. But the main attraction is 60 reliable recipes that redefine stoner cuisine and make homemade edibles easy. From Banana Bread to Cheesy Fettuccine Alfredo, these recipes cover all the bases, with dosage amounts and potency levels indicated for every recipe. One of my favorites is the recipe for Cannabis Simple Syrup. This weed-infused version of the old bartender’s staple is a convenient way to simultaneously sweeten and medicate drinks like iced tea, iced coffee, summer fruit punch, Mexican-style aguas frescas, the options are endless. “This book contains lots of easy to prepare recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus all the information the home consumer needs to get cooking with Cannabis,” Sicard told the Leaf. “In these days of over-regulation, making their own edibles is the best defense the consumer has to get the edibles they want in the doses they need.”

THE TOME INCLUDES AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF MARIJUANA, AND A FOOL-PROOF GUIDE TO FINDING YOUR PERFECT EDIBLE DOSE.
