Our Concentrates Issue is my favorite of the year, for
one simple reason: I love dabs! My first dab was around 2011 - in the century old boiler room below the now closed Northern Cross Collective Gardens in Bellingham - and I remember feeling the oil touch the red hot nail as the vapor 11 burst into my lungs with the force of a thousand bong hits. The world closed in around me, and I felt the reverberation of raw THC as it pulsed in my blood and mind, sending me away for the CONCENTRATES next few hours - humming with a high that was HAVE THE ABILITY unlike anything else. TO IMPART HEALING Over the last nine years of publishing VALUES THAT and working in Cannabis, I have personally seen the concentrate world evolve from Rick FLOWER ALONE Simpson Oil featuring Naptha (Coleman camp CANNOT REPLICATE, fuel) and open-blasted butane hash oil, to AND DELIVER A highly medicinal mono-cannabinoid extracts, PURE FLAVOR AND vaporizable concentrates of all kinds, and the EFFECT THAT WILL precursor to a new world of edibles, topicals, HAVE THE HEADIEST capsules and more. WOOK SWEATING For our Concentrate Issue we sought out AND SMILING FROM the best examples of the different types of THE TERPS. extractions, to share how they effect the body and the science behind the scenes. Concentrating Cannabis means exactly what it sounds like - taking a full plant and using a process or solvent to extract the purest essence of the plant. Concentrates have the ability to impart healing values that flower alone cannot replicate, and deliver a pure flavor and effect that will have the headiest wook sweating and smiling from the terps. Concentrates cover every aspect of Cannabis, from the medicinal to the recreational, and everywhere in between. Our comprehensive Concentrate Issue covers the different extraction methods, terminology, ways to consume and much more. So take a dab, flip through this beautiful, informational issue, and learn something new to share with someone in need of Cannabis - as a plant and as a medicine. As always, thanks for reading & sharing the Leaf!

COLORADO EXCEEDS $1 BILLION IN CANNABIS REVENUE SINCE 2014 The Mile High State has earned more than a billion dollars in Cannabis revenue since legalizing recreational marijuana sales in 2014, the state’s Department of Revenue announced in June. The money, which comes from taxes, licenses and fees, helps fund public education programs and health services in the state,

DISNEYLAND OF POT SHOPS COMING TO SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA
12
Planet 13, which has attracted international attention since it opened what may be the world’s biggest marijuana store last fall in Las Vegas, has announced a second location which will likely be the largest pot shop in California. The store, in Santa Ana, will open early next year, according to Planet 13. It’s being billed as the “Disneyland of dispensaries” and is opening just six miles from that theme park in an industrial section of the city, which abuts Anaheim. “It’ll have to be different than Vegas, of course,” said co-CEO Larry Scheffler of Planet 13. “But it still has to be a destination, with different effects blended into the fabric of the Southern California lifestyle.” Santa Ana is the only city that permits marijuana shops out of 34 cities in Orange County, according to The Orange County Register. With the city issuing just 30 licenses, there will be a maximum of 30 shops serving a county with more than 3 million residents and more than 50 million visitors each year. “To us, it was like a red flag,” Scheffler said. “This is the place to go.”
according to Gov. Jared Polis. “[The Cannabis] industry is helping grow our economy by creating jobs and generating valuable revenue that is going towards preventing youth consumption, protecting public health and safety, and investing in public school construction,” Polis said. There are currently almost 3,000 licensed Cannabis businesses in Colorado. They’d sold a total of $6.56 billion in weed products since legal sales began in January 2014. Last month, Gov. Polis signed into law a measure allowing marijuana delivery services and social use areas. The weed lounge will be “kind of like cigar lounges, which also help get the smell out of neighborhoods,” the governor wrote on Facebook. “We want Colorado to be the best state for investment, innovation, and development for this growing economic sector,” Polis said.

MARYLAND EXTENDS CANNABIS BUSINESS APPLICATION PERIOD AS ERRORS MAR DIVERSIFICATION PROCESS A series of technical errors has forced the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission to give companies 14 additional days to apply one of the state’s 14 new licenses to grow and process marijuana, state regulators announced on June 10. The commission had more than 160 applications by the previous deadline on May 24. Applications came from firms seeking a license in a second round aimed at increasing the participation of minority and women owned businesses. Maryland is issuing four new growing licenses, and 10 new licenses for processing the plant into medical products. Companies were given until June 24 to submit new applications “following a series of technical issues that presented obstacles to a significant number of those attempting to submit applications electronically by the May 24 deadline,” the commission announced.
MARYLAND CANNABIS REGULATORS WARN OF LEAD CONTAMINATION RISK; EXPAND HEAVY METALS TESTING
nwleAF.COM
Medical marijuana regulators in Maryland have expanded testing for heavy metals in Cannabis products, warning patients about the risk for possible lead contamination in popular vape pens. A June 14 advisory came from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission “to notify patients and other stakeholders of potential lead contamination of Cannabis liquids in vape cartridges following exposure to heat,” reports The Baltimore Sun. The warning comes as the commission enacts new rules requiring heavy metals testing at the stage when products are sold. Cannabis growers in the state have been required to test for metals since the medical program began in 2017. Joy Strand, executive director of the commission, said the new rules were “to correct an oversight of the original regulations.” Strand cited ‘the interest of public safety” regarding the commission’s requirement for testing to begin immediately on the vape cartridges.

FINAL PUSH TO LEGALIZE WEED FAILS IN NEW YORK
New York’s effort to legalize marijuana this year collapsed on June 19, dashing hopes for a billion dollar industry that would create jobs in minority communities and end decades of racially disproportionate policing, according to supporters. Democratic lawmakers had made a late push to get it done before the legislative session ended. But persistent disagreement about how to regulate the industry, as well as timidity from moderate lawmakers, spelled doom for the plan. “It is clear now that M.R.T.A. is not going to pass this session,” Senator Liz Krueger of Manhattan said Wednesday morning. “We came very close to crossing the finish line, but we ran out of time.” “Unfortunately, that delay means countless more New Yorkers will have their lives upended by unnecessary and racially disparate enforcement measures before we inevitably legalize,” Sen. Krueger added.

D.C. MOVES CLOSER TO RECREATIONAL CANNABIS STORES The ability of the District of Columbia to regulate Cannabis effectively, including the legalization of recreational sales, has long been roadblocked by one guy, Congressman Andy Harris of Maryland. Harris is a conservative republican, and the main reason why DC had a gray market for marijuana, despite voters deciding in 2014 to legalize the stuff. Every year since that vote, Rep. Harris proposed a rider to an appropriations bill - with the rider having the effect of preventing the District from using its own locally raised funds to create a system to tax and regulate the sales of recreational Cannabis. This stopped local officials from creating a legal structure within which pot stores could operate, and earned Harris a lot of enemies. But with Democrats now in charge of the House, Harris didn’t offer up his lame rider again this year. “The fact that he didn’t even both to offer it up is a sign of where we are nationally and for DC in particular. Harris must have known that he was going to lose and lose badly,” said Queen Adesuyi, policy coordinator at the Drug Policy Alliance. “I think DC needs to take a mini victory lap, even though the fight continues in the Senate.”

PUGET SOUND HAS HIGHEST CANNABIS USE ON EARTH, WASTEWATER STUDY SAYS A new study using Puget Sound wastewater to understand trends in Cannabis use suggests that western Washington state is a world leader in marijuana consumption. “We are part of an international study ... with 60-80 other cities around the world,” said Dr. Dan Burgard, who leads a team of researchers at the University of Puget Sound and University of Washington. “And according to wastewater, the Puget Sound area has the highest Cannabis use per capita, even over Amsterdam.” Dr. Jonathan Caulkins, who studies trends in drug use and legalization as a professor at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College, praised the research and said he hoped there’d be more studies like this. “I hope the whole regulatory community recognizes its potential,” Caulkins said. “The US used to lead in innovative data collection on drug use, and we’ve lost that edge, but this is promising.” The study suggests that the black market for weed was rapidly replaced by legal recreational sales in Washington state. While sales of legal marijuana increased rapidly from 2014 to 2016, there was only a small increase in the amount of THC metabolites detected in the waste stream. That indicates most pot users simply switched from the black market to legal pot shops.
MIDWEST
ILLINOIS BECOMES THE FIRST STATE TO LEGALIZE CANNABIS WITHOUT A REFERENDUM Illinois lawmakers in June were able to do what legislatures in other states have been unable to do: making Cannabis legal without a voter referendum. They thus became the first state where the Legislature made marijuana sales legal without a vote from the people. That made Illinois the 11th state to legalize recreational weed, and the second Midwestern state to do so, following only Michigan, where voters approved legalization in 2018. Illinois lawmakers achieved legalization by addressing issues including minority representation in the nascent industry; such issues had derailed similar efforts in both New York and New Jersey. The law sets aside $12 million for a Cannabis Business Development Fund to lowering licensing fee costs for minority entrepreneurs. The fund will also provide lowinterest business loans to minority owners, filling an important gap created by the skittishness of banks to make loans to Cannabis businesses due to weed’s illegal status at the federal level. Regulators in Illinois are now tasked with creating a cannabis enforcement agency and setting up a system to license pot shops, growers and processors. Lawmakers set January 1, 2020 as the date for the law to go into effect. BY STEVE ELLIOTT, AUTHOR OF THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK OF MARIJUANA

The Longest Drive competition was appropriately sponsored by Terpene Transit, while Confidence Analytics guaranteed a refreshing respite by taking the reins of the always necessary beverage cart. This swinging affair sees the likes of the biggest names in the biz hobnobbing with entrepreneurial up and comers, all hashing it out for the rights to slip on the prestigious green winner’s jacket. The real win, however, was simply being a part of the party - although no one was complaining about the chance to claim $25,000 for landing a hole-in-one on one of the Par 3s. While no one claimed the almighty payout this time, the Cannabis fueled tee shots were grazing the cup all day. Many thanks to The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge for providing the perfect venue for fun loving Cannabis entrepreneurs to come together for valuable networking, while displaying their talents (or lack thereof) for a full day on the links. It’s no surprise that this is becoming the industry’s favorite day to play hooky and come together with luminaries from the Cannabis industry, embracing their valuable existing relationships while building new ones. Youmaythinkhemp activism is for someone else. Yes, you support the hemp movement — butwhat canyoureallydo? Lots, actually. Much more than you think. I daresay that you have more influence on the future of hemp than you give yourself credit for. You, your family, your friends and co-workers are a huge influence on the hemp market. You heard me right - you and those you know are the ones who will decide exactly how hemp will change the world. We all agree that the signing of the Farm Bill (The Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018) was an epic game changer. Hemp is legal. It’s no longer a forbidden plant. In fact, hemp is the new black and the power is in your hands.

>SHOP WITH YOUR FEET. VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET. You are a consumer. You get paid and you shop. How and where you shop and what you purchase are your personal decisions. Availability, price and other constraints temper your specific purchases, but walk into any retail outlet or go online and you’re assaulted with seemingly endless choices from vendor after vendor. But in the end you decide what you buy. Hemp, and especially CBD hemp products, are no different. Everywhere you look, brick and mortar or online, someone’s trying to get you to buy the latest and greatest CBD infused product. This is why you, the consumer, have so much power. It’s up to you what you buy - if anything at all. Each purchase you make has repercussions. Your actions at the cash register reverberate throughout the global supply chain. Don’t want to gamble on Chinese hemp that might have pesticides or heavy metals? Buy organic hemp. Want to support small businesses? Shop local. Read up on the ingredients. Ask questions. Learn about CBD and other cannabinoids. Learn about whole plant, full spectrum products. Google the “entourage effect” and “Cannabis terpenes” and go from there. Learn enough to evaluate the products you’re buying so you can separate the good actors from the bad. Moral of the story: buy what you support. Help those that help you. Shop with your feet, vote with your wallet.
>HELP HEMP EVOLVE
If there are multiple hemp products on the shelf and you always reach for Brand X, you just voted. Not only did you vote for Brand X, you voted against Y, Z and all the other vendors. Businesses listen to customers and react accordingly. If you and everyone else tends to buy Brand X, guess what stores will stock? Those that don’t listen to their customers tend to go out of business. This is as true for retailers as it is for manufacturers (and even the farmers behind them all). Our collective buying decisions make all the difference in the world, especially now. There are countless hemp companies trying to carve out a place in this wild, wild west of a market. All of us are building it from scratch. Having a lot of money doesn’t necessarily mean your products are going to be winners or even survive. The barrier to entry is low right now, but the invisible hand of the market will winnow out the weak and reward the rest. Who votes? You and your wallet. This is why I say that you and I, individual consumers, have a disproportionate influence on hemp as it enters the mainstream. What we buy will dictate what gets produced. Do you want to see hemp foods? Then buy them. Hate plastic? Investigate hemp alternatives. Pay what you must, but reach out to the companies behind your favorite products. Thus, the key considerations when advertising through social media are to not provide free product or coupons, to include the required warnings with all posts, and to avoid any advertisements which may be considered to target minors. This last point is especially important, and it is better to be over-cautious when considering whether a post could be appealing to minors. The WSLCB has also provided some internal policies that are helpful for licensees with a social media presence. Can I use social media to promote my business?
Yes. Please use social media with caution and be mindful not to appeal to, or solicit, viewers under the age of 21. If possible, please restrict views to adults age 21 and older. Will I be able to use online advertising options like Google AdWords or advertising links within websites to promote my marijuana business?
Yes. May I hire an online advertising company to promote my business through blog posts and other online options like videos?
Yes. Is there a limit to what may be shared on Social Media channels for product marketing?

S
ocial media is so pervasive in today’s culture that it’s only natural to want to share your products and reviews with the world. However, there are strict rules around advertising with Cannabis licenses, so you want to be careful of what you post. Here are the general guidelines: Per WAC 314-55-155, the following requirements apply to all Cannabis advertising, including social media advertising: Giveaways, coupons, and distribution of branded merchandise are banned. All advertising must contain the following warnings: “This product has intoxicating effects and may be habit forming.”; “Marijuana can impair concentration, coordination, and judgment. Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of this drug.”; “There may be health risks associated with consumption of this product.”; and “For use only by adults twenty-one and older. Keep out of the reach of children.” All marijuana advertising and labels of useable marijuana and marijuanainfused products sold in the state of Washington may not contain any statement, or illustration that: Is false or misleading; Promotes overconsumption; Represents the use of marijuana has curative or therapeutic effects; Depicts a child or other person under legal age to consume marijuana, or includes: Objects, such as toys, characters, or cartoon characters suggesting the presence of a child, or any other depiction designed in any manner to be especially appealing to children or other persons under legal age to consume marijuana; or Is designed in any manner that would be especially appealing to children or other persons under twenty-one years of age.

Am I able to produce a YouTube page with comedy commercials promoting my marijuana business?
Yes. Please use social media with caution and to be mindful not to appeal to, or solicit, viewers under the age of 21. If possible, please restrict views to adults age 21 and older. Am I able to have a mascot in the YouTube commercial?
Yes, as long as the mascot is not a cartoon character or is appealing to children. May customers register with the store for future emails for announcements, promotions, etc.?
Yes. May you use wording implying just how fine your brand might be? Like, “County Gold, Washington’s Best, or jingles?
Yes. What are the guidelines for advertising in other states?
Licensees are prohibited from engaging in advertising that specifically targets persons outside the state of Washington. Note – all advertisements on social media should either include language that indicates the target audience is WA, or avoids mentioning other states. It’s also important to remember that each individual social media platform has its own rules and regulations, which also must be complied with in addition to the WA requirements. Typically, social media platforms prohibit any language that can be considered to encourage the delivery or dispensing of a controlled substance. Facebook’s ad policy specifically prohibits the advertising of “ illegal, prescription or recreational drugs.” YouTube’s rules say any video that features the “sale, use, or abuse of illegal drugs, regulated drugs or substances, or other dangerous products is not suitable for advertising.” Most large social media companies are taking the cautious approach when it comes to Cannabis advertising – while Cannabis company pages are likely okay in terms of these policies, it is important to be mindful that direct advertisements specifically may still be banned or blocked on these platforms. I think the important thing is understanding that most consumers don’t have access or aren’t aware of the information about Cannabis like the industry does. So identifying with the customer as to how they evaluate strains, and their history of what they’ve tried before, is important to help find a balance and a common starting point to be able to suggest new products based on similarities. For me, the most important thing is identifying the experience they associate with products - and using the education through experience is the most valuable tool for every consumer.

COURTNEYMALTAIS JUl. 2019
FOR THIS MONTH’S CONCENTRATES ISSUE, I had the absolute privilege of interviewing Courtney Maltais of The Clear. Not only is she the lead botanist and co-founder of this legendary extract company, but she is also the founder and biologist at her own consulting firm - CM Botanical - which is “dedicated to educating the public on Cannabis, as well as advising business owners on manufacturing, micro-propagation practices, and product formulation.” How did you get started in the Cannabis industry?
What advice would you give to your younger self knowing what you know now?
Trust your gut - intuition may not feel practical or calculated, but in time will help in leading you towards the kind of individuals and companies that align with your ethos. By following my passion for the plant, I have met so many profound people in my life; educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and warriors of the war on drugs. At the same time, the industry is still blooming and there are a lot of shifts to come as it matures. This means there is still a lot of work to be done to refine industry practice and respect the plant, and most importantly respect the people that have suffered from prohibition. Don’t let that overwhelm you, this is a movement bigger than we can comprehend and you have all of the determination and heart to carve out a space there. Love your Cannabis sisters fiercely and support them all. The network of femme Cannabis business owners and professionals I have found myself in has been so rewarding for me both on a personal and career level. In an ever-changing space, with regulatory changes, and all the ebbs and flows of the newly legalized system - you need to surround yourself with hardworking, accountable, and creative individuals who have each other’s backs. Cannabis is a catalyst for change, and it’s crucial to honor that by reshaping corporate and workplace culture into something that protects the disadvantaged, and empowers us all to do better, and be better.
My relationship with Cannabis stems back to when I was a teenager - it was a way to connect with my peers and create intimacy with friends that may not have expressed themselves without encouragement from consuming Cannabis. I was always a sensitive and curious kid, and Cannabis only enhanced that within me. Exploring the natural world through the scientific lens was that much more fulfilling when Cannabis was involved. I think the mind has such a deeper capacity for empathy and making connections you never considered before experiencing Cannabis. Cannabis also played a major role in my healing process after getting diagnosed with an immune disease when I was in my early twenties. At the time there were few options for relief, and Cannabis helped in reshaping both my perspective and physical health. In 2013, after graduating, I picked up and moved from New Hampshire to California. I had been discussing loose plans with my friends and business partners, Chris Barone and Brian Maltais. HOW THIS COMEDY ACTOR IS FINDING A NEW ROLE AS A CANNABIS ENTREPRENEUR

LIKE HIS OLDER BROTHER JOHN WHO PASSED AWAY TRAGICALLY AT AGE 33 - JIM BELUSHI IS A COMEDIAN, ACTOR AND MUSICIAN WHO HAS APPEARED IN MANY SITCOMS, FILMS, AND LIKE HIS OLDER BROTHER, EVEN DID A STINT ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE IN THE MID-80S. JIM BELUSHI IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH – FUNNY, SMART AND TALENTED. YOU’VE LIKELY SEEN HIM IN SHOWS LIKE THE SITCOMS ACCORDING TO JIM OR TWIN PEAKS, OR MAYBE IN FILMS SUCH AS RED HEAT, TRADING PLACES OR GHOST WRITER. For a long time Belushi has been an outspoken proponent of Cannabis and its myriad health benefits for humanity. For one, he has gone on the record in many interviews saying that he believes that this herb can truly function as an ‘exit drug’ – that is, that Cannabis has the ability to shift people who are addicted away from more harmful substances. He often references this through the drug overdose death of his brother. According to Jim, John was an football player linebacker, a position that is often prone to head trauma - who had seizures in high school. Jim

believes that John would have benefited from legal Cannabis and its ability to act as a neural protectant. These days, Jim is bringing his talents to the Cannabis scene in Oregon, where he purchased a farm in the southern part of the state along the Rogue River. There, he grows outdoor Cannabis on his 93 acre farm, taking a hands-on approach. Unlike most celebrity canna-brands, Belushi actually gets his hands dirty, taking care to use the proper nutrients, making sure the cure is right, and of course, the terpene profile. Since Belushi has a rich knowledge of music, he’s even curating playlists for his plants that change with each stage of growth. He’s focused on growing what he likes, cultivating an Afghani hybrid called Captain Jack - named for a grower who used to supply Dan Ackroyd and John Be-
lushi with good herb back in their early SNL days. He also grows a terrific variety of Cherry Pie that is widely available in and around Portland dispensaries. Belushi’s brand is called Belushi’s Farm and has been a popular one around the state, impressing many a connoisseurs - this author included. Belushi started smoking Cannabis at an early age in his home state of Indiana. He was even arrested twice for possession when he was young. These days he consumes it in a more responsible manner by microdosing, saying that he vapes a few days a week and uses CBD on a daily basis. As we inch closer and closer to the normalization of Cannabis across the world, celebrities like Jim Belushi are helping speed the process up a bit. We’ll look forward to seeing just where he takes it, but for now, we can all say a big thank you to Jim for his activism and dedication to the cause.

Popping open a jar delivers a fresh and warm floral OG flavor, with deeper notes of sour cookies and an earthy-sweet skunk. Complex but balanced well, this is a unique cross of flavors bred to look beautiful in flower. The buds are tight and dense with a satisfying crack indicative of a good cure, with a liberal coating of trichomes frosting the lime green exterior of the flower. First tokes are light and clean as the flower burns easily, delivering a sweet but distinctly OG smoke that whispers into the lungs. The exhale is terp-spicy and aromatic, leaving a cookies-sherb flavor on the palate as content-happy-dazed effects rush into the mind. Within minutes, the body vibes hit like a big hug of THC, layering the body in a numbing, muscle relaxing couchlock high. Potent in the head and body department, this is a solid afternoon or evening buzz that delivers for several hours. Pike Place OG is a cross between the 91 OG Kush and the Sunset Sherbert. Super Dave is a Washington breeder with a decade of Cannabis growing experience that began in the medical Cannabis market. Known for his Grape Juice and Fire Cherry Pie, the Pike Place OG was developed as he worked to blend the gas from the 91 OG with the sweetness of the Sherbet in a new, unique strain. With a self-funded Tier 1 farm in Bellingham, Super Dave grows with organic methods, using living soil in a flowering room that is only 800 square feet. With a less is more mentality, he focuses on putting out strains he believes in, that possess unique flavor profiles. Grown by a true hands in the soil stoner owner, Pike Place OG is the grower’s first drop in the rec market. We expect great things to come from Super Dave Genetics and can’t wait to see more hand-crafted strains and concentrates out of this craft garden!

THE LEAF’S ANNUAL GUIDE TO DABBING SAFELY & WISELY
JUL. 2019
DABBING 101 HYDROCARBON CARTRIDGES SOLVENTLESS GEAR GUIDE CO2 OIL ROSIN PRESS FECO/RSO
Dabbing 101 Concentrates are extractions of
Cannabis produced with or without a solvent such as butane, ethanol or CO2. Common examples in Eastern medicine include essential oils. Anyone consuming concentrates for the first time should do so with extreme caution.
Dabbing is the act of vaporizing Canna-
bis concentrate and inhaling the vapor for medicinal or recreational effects. The vapor acts as a quick and easy delivery system for Cannabinoids, and is not meant to be held in for longer than three to five seconds. Dabbing can involve a torch and a vaporization surface, commonly called a nail, attached to a water pipe. The nail is heated until hot before a small amount of concentrate is touched to the surface. Nails can be quartz or titanium, and heated externally or by a plug-in heating element, called an e-nail. The user inhales through a water pipe and the vapor is exhaled without excessive smoke or coughing, assuming a proper dosage. Patients can also use dab pens or vapor cartridges, which allow for vaporizing in a portable manner and don’t rely on having a torch.
Temperature is critical.
Concentrates that are dabbed too hot will burn off the terpenes, leaving a bland taste behind. Concentrates that are dabbed too cool might leave pooled residue and not fully vaporize. The best way to reach a happy medium is to use a carb cap, which sits on top of a nail once a dab is applied and holds heat and vapor in. A carb cap is designed to vaporize an extract at the lowest possible temperature. I find that letting the nail cool down sufficiently and then using the carb cap will produce a flavorful, fully vaporized dab. Solventless extracts such as full melt bubble hash/ice wax should be dabbed at slightly higher temperatures. To determine whether your temp is right, check the color of the residue. If it’s blackish, the dab was taken too hot. If the residue is a light brown, it means the dab was vaporized at the optimal temperature. Experiment again!
THC percentages range from 20 to 90 percent, and can easily overwhelm first-timers or even more experienced users. Start with a grain of rice.
Don’t hold a hit in longer than
three to five seconds because you’re not absorbing more cannabinoids, you’re just depriving your lungs of oxyen.

COLD SMOKE CONCENTRATES GMO
concentrate processed with a solvent like butane or propane that is hydrocarbon based. Properly processed in a safe environment with medicinal grade solvent, hydrocarbon extracts can be some of the highest quality and tastiest extracts on the market. BHO or PHO are made by forcing the solvent over plant material at high pressure, stripping the Cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes and flavonoids from the plant and concentrating them into a delicious and beautiful extracted oil. BHO is known for capturing the essence of a strain, especially when using all nug-run material or live-resin style, which involves fresh frozen Cannabis. Propane is often present in BHO extracts, as many processors use a blend of the two gasses. Pure PHO tends to have a lighter and more orange color and can generate a fluffy consistency that doesn’t appear with BHO. Propane is a quality solvent and can be purged from the extract in a shorter time and at lower temperatures than butane, which can help preserve terpenes and flavors.
JUL. 2019
When flowers are processed into concentrates, they need to be purged of residual solvents to be safe for consumption. There are many harmful chemicals that can end up in the oil if it isn’t processed properly, and you should only buy tested and safe concentrates for consumption. Purging through heat and pressure is what removes the solvents, leaving only the delicious oil we all love to dab. It’s also important to remember that with all concentrates, you are taking a large amount of plant matter and “concentrating” it into a small amount of oil. This takes the “good” aspects we desire, the Cannabinoids and flavors, but will also transfer anything “bad,” like pesticides or chemicals. Look for concentrates that are processed with material from sustainable and conscious farms, and never be afraid to ask for test results to ensure your oil is clean, and tasty!

CARTRIDGES THERE ARE A COUPLE BASIC RULES TO ENJOY THE BEST EXPERIENCE WITH A CARTRIDGE... First, ask the budtender if it is cut with any solvent, or look on the packaging. We recommend avoiding anything cut with Propylene Glycol, especially for patients, because there are safer and healthier options available. Also, avoid anything with an artificial sounding flavor like Blue Raspberry or Waffles. Look at the vape package to see if the flavor is naturally derived, and if so, go for it. While there are no rules governing flavors in E-cigarettes or Cannabis cartridges currently, we feel that strain specific and naturally processed options are the best! Vaporization can be one of the most desirable and pleasurable ways to consume Cannabis, especially when discretion counts. You should not vape indoors or where ever it is specifically mentioned, such as on an airplane or bus. Feel free to use outdoors when your vapor will not bother others or be near children. Consumers will find a variety of battery options, from disposable types that have a non-rechargable battery and last about 200 hits, to ones with USB charging capabilities and changable cartridges.

SOLVENTLESS HASH refers to hash, kief or rosin that has been processed and collected using only natural and sometimes ancient methods of extraction. These include ice water, which is used with filtered bags to create bubble hash, kief or sift, which can be separated by tumbling, sifting or beating trichomes off the plant, or rosin, which involves using heat to squish raw plant flowers or hash/kief previously extracted.

Q-TIPS AND RUBBING ALCOHOL DIRECTIONAL CARB CAPS
Many “quartz” bangers are cheaply assembled in China and can only withstand about a month or two of heavy dabbing. American made quartz bangers are made in smaller batches, often with higher quality quartz which enhances both flavor and the quality of the dab.
This laser thermometer helps achieve the perfect temperature dab. The temptech sits under the nail constantly reading the heat level so you know exactly when it’s ready - hot dabs are a thing of the past!
Banger balls are small quartz marbles that help the nail stay at temperature longer. Utilizing these will enhance flavor and make for longer lasting dabs.
Using an alcohol-soaked Q-tip to clean the nail after each dab will keep it looking like new and drastically improve flavor.

methods of extracting any type of plant matter. Carbon dioxide is pumped at often supercritical temperatures under high pressure to pull cannabinoids from the plant material, leaving a pure concentrate. CO2 is not toxic to humans and kills any microbial growth in the process of extraction. Plus, CO2 can be used to create natural essential oils in addition to Cannabis concentrates. Mainstream products processed with CO2 include herbal essential oils, hops for beer and decaffeinated coffee. Because of the considerable investment required to process CO2 (roughly $75,000) the average gram retails for around $30$60 per gram. The cell walls of the Cannabis plant can sometimes contain large wax concentrations. Unfortunately for consumers, plant waxes are one of the leading causes of excessive coughing when dabbing. By washing the concentrate sample with alcohol, the wax will remain in the container and the cannabinoids will be absorbed into the alcohol and distilled off as the alcohol evaporates in a separate container. Concentrates with higher amounts of plant waxes and lipids will require a higher temperature to dab and, as pointed out earlier, will cause more irritation on the throat and lungs. Special note: Any concentrate that has an ethanol wash should be tested for residual alcohol. Residual alcohol at high ppm can be harmful if vaporized.

Turn the bag inside out using a pair of forceps, Why? it puts the seam on the inside of the bag and allows more oil to leave the bag in the pressing process and creates a cleaner separation, where the thread can potentially hold the oil in.

Pack the bags, removing large stems and ending up with 0.3 to 0.5 gram nugs, aiming to pack the bag out evenly so that it squishes evenly and you get even expansion across everything. These 2x3’s have 4 grams, we run 4/20 grams of these. We tamp down the bud until it is a snug pack.

This is our manual setup, so you hand pump and follow the gauge, and with this manual press, we run up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, and that starts the process of mechanical separation, and starts the timer for exposure time. PESTICIDE AND CHEMICAL FREE, AND GROWN WITH LOVE BEFORE BEING SOLD AS FLOWER AND CONCENTRATES. A TRUE CRAFT ORIENTED STONER OWNER, WE CHATTED WITH DR. STEFANO ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF THE FARM AND WHY IT MATTERS TO HER TO SHARE CLEAN, HEALTHY CANNABIS. INTERVIEW BY WES ABNEY @BEARDEDLORAX
How did Cannabis come into your life? Cannabis was the first substance that I ever had much of an interest in, and it has persisted so far! As I came of age and experimented with things, Cannabis was the one I was attracted to, and it stuck ever since. What inspired you to start Puffin Farm? We’ve been growing Cannabis since college, for personal use, and eventually for medical patients. Prior to 502 we were growing CBD strains medicinally on a small scale to help people through dispensaries like Dockside. The Remedy that we started growing then is still going today! At the height of MMJ when legalization passed, we had to decide to go with it or stop growing because we didn’t have the hope for medical to continue, and it seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity to do what we had already chosen to do before it was legal. Why did you choose to grow outdoors and organically? I’m a naturopathic doctor as well as a Cannabis farmer, so organic food is something that I have been eating for the last 20 years. I spend a lot of money on organics because I don’t want to put pesticides in my body that cause cancer, birth defects, and does so much harm to people’s bodies. So the first reason is avoiding chemicals and pesticides in Cannabis. I’m also an environmentalist, and pesticides have a big impact on the environment and global sustainability. Growing with chemicals sends them into the ground, and on both ends of the agricultural chain the inputs and outputs are toxic and energy intensive, so it’s the right thing to do from a health and environmental perspective. And again, it’s what we want to put into our bodies, so that’s what we put out for customers.
What does it mean to you to be a Cannabis business owner that consumes the plant? Everything we grow, we want to consume ourselves! We’ve been growing Cannabis since we were 18 years old - we always liked good weed. So when we grow it for business, if it doesn’t pass our personal test, we won’t sell it. So for us it’s all about quality, high terpenes, and connoisseur grade clean Cannabis. Right now we are working on hash rosin that is absolutely delicious, and we try to make handcrafted connoisseur grade Cannabis products because it’s what we love. What is your favorite strain and way to consume? It’s a hard choice, but right now my favorite strain is Hindu Kush - which we’ve been growing for years and is one of our most popular. As for methods, I’m really enjoying hash rosin. Which is kind of a new thing for me, but I’ve been smoking joints a lot for the last few years. That’s what my husband does, so I tagged along with him, and I enjoy those because there’s no waste. Once it’s down to a roach you can throw it into the compost, so I just love joints and think they are becoming an under appreciated method of smoking. But hash rosin is amazing! I can’t believe I haven’t started dabbing it sooner. I recently got a Puffco Peak and that’s what made it more accessible to me. It tastes like the flower, so buttery and smooth and clean. It’s one of the cleanest ways of smoking Cannabis out there, just water and heat. How do you handle consumption during the work day for both yourself and your employees? I don’t consume during the work day, and I try to set a good example for the team. I know personally if I consume and try
to get work done, it’s usually a bad idea. Cannabis can be inspiring and great for creative projects, and it can help me get unstuck on a problem, but for general work where I have to get stuff done, it’s not the best thing to do. So we encourage employees to enjoy Cannabis, but not during the work day. Some people are okay to work on it and some aren’t, so we want to have a fair environment for employees and be consistent. If we have a tasting session or R&D, I’ll smoke big during the day, but it usually wrecks the rest of my day. What is your biggest challenge, and favorite part of owning a legal Cannabis business? The biggest challenge is the regulations and the low profit margins in the overly competitive cutthroat environment in Washington. Plus the regulations and the LCB issues, with the way they enforce rules and traceability with senseless rules. We spend so much time doing total bullshit busy work that the LCB isn’t even able to use the data on, so it’s a wasted effort. But we were the second state to legalize, so it’s an experiment I guess, you can’t expect much. My favorite part is growing three quarters of an acre of plants outdoors in the open, and being able to have hundreds of pounds of beautiful sungrown flower and products I would buy if I wasn’t a grower. I love growing and providing to the public and people who share my taste in Cannabis. What are your goals for the future of Puffin Farm and the industry in general? I would like to see the regulations loosened - to make it a more business friendly environment, and having it become more normal and open would be great. I think hemp will be a big part of that! We just got a hemp license, and are growing a test crop this year and pushing for a national hemp product next year - as craft, terpene rich Puffin CBD Hemp flower that people as far away as New York will be able to buy! So our goal is to add hemp into our brand, and to keep going towards launching Puffin in other states. What do you enjoy doing in your free time off the farm? I enjoy hanging out with my kids, because they are the most important thing for us. So free time is all dedicated to the kids. 502 business life is pretty all consuming and intensive. It can be hard to shut off and stop working, so whenever possible they need more attention. That’s the main focus!
A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Look for the Stoner Owner stamp when purchasing fine Cannabis, and let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

The Barnard Griffin Columbia Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a beautifully constructed, mediumbodied white with tons of flavor. RASPBERRY WHIP & CHIPS Serves 4-6
1 ½ cups nonfat Greek vanilla yogurt, drained in cheesecloth or fine strainer over a bowl overnight 1-2 tablespoons honey 2-4 tablespoons orange juice 1-2 tablespoons canna-oil, melted and cooled 2 teaspoons vanilla 10 ounces raspberries, fresh or frozen, pureed 1/3 cup chocolate chips
“POTRIOTIC” RED, WHITE AND BLUE STUFFED ANGEL FOOD CAKE Serves 12
1 cup sifted cake flour (not self-rising) 1 1/2 cups sugar 12 large egg whites 2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest 1 tablespoon orange juice 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups sliced berries 2 teaspoons sugar 2-4 tablespoons melted canna-butter or canna-oil 12 small scoops vanilla low fat ice cream
1. Place the yogurt in a large bowl. Add the honey, orange juice, infused oil and vanilla. Stir well to combine. 2. Using a spatula fold in the raspberry puree and chips, creating swirls. Divide the mixture between 4-6 glasses or bowls.
66
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees, with rack in lower third of oven. Sift flour and 1/2 cup sugar into a bowl. 2. Whisk whites with a mixer on medium speed until frothy, about one minute. Add orange zest and juice, cream of tartar, vanilla, and salt. Continue whisking until soft peaks form, about 2 1/2 minutes. With mixer running, gradually add remaining cup of sugar. 3. Increase speed to medium-high. Continue whisking until firm, not stiff, peaks form - about two minutes. Sprinkle whites with 1/3 of the flour/sugar mixture. Using a rubber spatula, gently fold to combine. Sprinkle remaining flour/sugar mixture over whites in two additions. Gently fold to combine. 4. Transfer batter to a 10-inch angel food cake pan with legs. Gently run a knife through the center of the batter to remove any air bubbles. Bake until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes.

DEGENERATE FLAME-OFF
In 2009 Mike “Mer” Steeler and Justin Sheppard had the great idea to start a flame-off at the Cornerstone in Eugene, Oregon. Being that this town is so influential to glass culture, it was the perfect place to start the Degenerate Flame Off. Now DFO is one of the West Coast’s largest gatherings of world class glass artists, collectors and industry affiliates. Thanks to names like Mike Steeler, Justin Sheppard, Ashley Tulare, Abe Fleishman, Deb Philpot, Libby Goettelman, Matty White, and many others for continuing this event through hardships and through outgrowing the original facility. 2016 was the last year for the DFO at Cornerstone glass.

“I started to bug Abe about not letting the event die.
He said if I could find a place to hold it we could plan it,” recalled Libby Goettelman, DFO Event Coordinator. “I started to look all around Eugene wanting to keep the event with its roots, but when nothing panned out I started looking in Portland and everywhere in between. After over a year of looking, the event did not happen in 2017. I finally came across the Cedarville Lodge, and Abe and I both felt that this is where the DFO needed to be. With Ashley and Justin’s permission, we were on to bringing the event back.” Just like that, Northstar was gearing up for DFO Family Reunion 2018 and couldn’t be stopped. After a successful 2018 event, Northstar was planning to celebrate the 10th annual DFO back at Cedarville Lodge, and let me be the first to tell you it was spectacular! The amount of love from the community for this event is next level. DFO brings in countless volunteers that are willing to do whatever the coordinators may need them to. This year was especially awesome because of the people that came from all over. There were photographers, collectors, artists, and more that came from Philadelphia, Boston, Florida, Maryland, and beyond. One of my personal favorite parts of the event was getting to witness Team Japan having an awesome time in Oregon, while absolutely crushing their demo piece. That brings me to the next part, the demonstrations! These men and women did such an amazing job this weekend. DFO brings nearly 70 artists to demo in this two day event. Everywhere you look your mind is being blown. I think the most incredible piece to come from the weekend was the five way collab between Buck, Deppe, Darby, Trevy, and WJC. These guys pulled off a finish to one of the coolest glass pieces I have ever seen. Huge thanks also goes out to Matty White and his team! Matty runs Champs Glass Games and helps out tremendously by setting up all the tables, lines, kilns and all other things the artists may need. I can’t thank Libby, Abe, Deb, and their whole crew enough. This event is something that I will always hold close to my heart because of the friends I’ve met, the art I’ve seen, and the memories I’ve made. See you all next year at the 11th annual DFO Family Reunion!

Remember that movie where the guy is dying of thirst in the desert and he keeps thinking that he sees water up ahead, but it’s only a mirage? Well, that is what your brain is doing when it tells you that if you drink more alcohol, you’ll feel better. And be more amazing. And be a more amazing singer. You know how it works; the progression casually begins at Friday happy hour with a beer and a shot just to take the edge off - a reward for the tempest of horseshit you weathered all week. Then things turn professional with more pints before throwing all caution to a stiff wind with the kind of reckless abandon that involves consecutive rounds of mystery shots with trendy names, followed by hard high fives and puckered faces. Inevitably, the evening will wind down with a large cocktail and another beer that goes half drank, before waving the proverbial white bar nap in staggering surrender. Your mind, body and spirit are separate entities now, clashing like titans, fueled in a paradoxical lather of physical imbalance. And a false sense of mental fortitude. With your better sense of rationale completely disregarded and your level of sobriety stubbornly defended, you’re in no position at this point to make calculated decisions. Like whether to invest the $43 for an Uber ride home, or drive yourself. Or whether to provoke an argument with another drunk person, or your significant other. Or whether to provoke an argument with your drunk significant other. Or whether it’s a good idea to eat. And eat a lot. This is called the Drunchies. Be it the Denny’s Grand Slam loaded with maple syrup and a banana split chaser, a super-sized Big Mac meal accentuated by dubious packets of ketchup and a crushed Oreo McFlurry, or a fully loaded bacon wrapped street dog - a liquor induced feeding frenzy is a recipe for a boiling volcanic cauldron. Note: Under no circumstances should this condition ever be confused with the munchies.
