We popped many packs worth of seeds in pursuit of the perfect cut of this amazing plant. Far and away the most popular flower and oil we had in the world of medical, we are confident this cut will stand out when compared to any other of its kind. Consistently testing in the mid 20's in THC content, this cut is piney with tinges of lemon and a serious kush effect. This Sativa Dominant Hybrid is a west coast classic and our most popular strain. For all ages 21 and over. This product has intoxicating effects and may be habit-forming. This product may be unlawful outside the state of Washington. Should not be used by women who are pregnant. Keep out of reach of children. Do not operate vehicle or machinery under the influence of this product. Enjoy responsibly!

Cannabis plants of Washington and Southern Oregon. These are the true giants, the old growth of Cannabis, that started as clones or seeds popping last February and March in preparation for a long summer of sunshine and growth. We’ve refined our harvest issue over the years to only include full term Cannabis plants, those grown in a single season lasting months, not light deprived greenhouse plants. Don’t get me wrong...I personally love light dep greenhouse Cannabis, but there is something special about the full season process. For the farmers and the plants, the risk and love is evident, as both rush to finish their cycle before the weather turns sour. The best part about the harvest is the farmers who have worked all year to grow their crop. This is where pot meets traditional agriculture fully. Whether growing potatoes or Cannabis, a lot of energy, sweat and faith go into growing a yearly crop. Many of the farmers I spoke with personally talked of the stress and fear of weather, of bugs, and of staking a year’s income and livelihood on a plant that grows outdoor from June until October. It is a beautiful and humble process, and one that we are proud and excited to share with our readers. I encourage all our readers to look for a full term, sungrown outdoor product this year at the local pot shop and give it a try. Smoke a fatty of some terpy, beautiful outdoor-- and as you inhale be mindful of the fact that someone spent nine months growing that plant for you to enjoy. It’s a heady thought, and makes for a mindful and fun session that might have you wanting to grow your own outdoor giant next year! —Wes Abney

Washington state’s recreational marijuana industry was recently examined by Cannabis technology and market data company Headset. The company’s market analysis, based on September sales by participating Washington marijuana retailers, yielded some interesting insights. Quoted IT’S NOT THAT EVERYONE DECIDED TO START CONSUMING MARIJUANA BECAUSE IT’S LEGAL, IT’S JUST NOW THAT WE CAN REALIZE THE TAX REVENUE. —RIANA DURETT, executive director of the Nevada Dispensary Association, on the $27 million first-month marijuana sales in Nevada, more than double Oregon’s, and the subsequent tax dollars the state will receive, instead of it going to the black market.

Oregon To Begin Distributing $85 Million In Cannabis Taxes Legal marijuana is starting to pay off nicely for Oregon. The state is now distributing nearly $85 million in tax collected from legal pot sales, cite this information. The Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC), which oversees legal Cannabis, had to first reimburse the administrative costs of setting up the program. The OLCC took out a loan for $13 million to pay initial administrative costs, according to agency spokesman Mark Pettinger. Now that the money has been paid back, tax revenue can be distributed to the following budgets as indicated at right:

• $34 million to the state school fund • $17 million to mental health, alcoholism and drug services • $17 million to cities and counties • $12 million to Oregon State Police • $4 million to Oregon Housing Authority According to Oregon’s marijuana law, 40 percent goes to the Common School Fund; 20 percent to mental health, drug and alcohol treatment programs; 15 percent to the Oregon State Police; 10 percent to cities for local law enforcement; 10 percent to counties for local law enforcement; and 5 percent to the Oregon Health Authority, reports WCNC.

Quick Hits! 20 734 694,364 Dollars is the average price for a gram of good weed in Alaska, compared to $10 in other legalized states.

Pounds of flower were sold by farms to legal stores in Alaska this August, as well as 444 pounds of “other Cannabis plant parts,” like concentrates.

Dollars in Cannabis taxes were collected by Alaska in August, the most ever for one state in one month, and the sixth consecutive month the state has set the record.

Opioid Deaths Fell in Colorado AFTER Legalizing marijuana Opioid related deaths fell by more than 6 percent in Colorado in the two years since recreational Cannabis sales began, according to new research published in November’s edition of the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH). The findings suggest that Cannabis could be a valuable weapon in fighting the effects of America’s opioid epidemic, under which drug overdose deaths have tripled since 2000, reports Blair Miller of NewsChannel 5 Network. The study found that the 6.5 percent reduction in opioid deaths represents “a reversal” of a 14-year trend of increasing opioid deaths in Colorado. The use of Cannabis as an alternative to opioid painkillers — or as an “exit drug” for addicts — has received increasing attention in the past year. Meanwhile, the backward-facing Trump Administration, particularly Attorney General Jeff Sessions, continues to fight the fact that marijuana is helpful as an alternative medicine. Legalization of Cannabis in Colorado was associated with short-term reductions in opioid-related deaths, according to the study. As additional data become available, research should replicate these analyses in other states with legal recreational Cannabis.

14/nov. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

The new study, published by researchers from the University of North Texas, University of Florida and Emory University, looked solely at Colorado’s recreational Cannabis program and its correlation with opioidrelated deaths. Researchers worked to strengthen their model by comparing Nevada and Colorado. Nevada legalized medicinal Cannabis shortly after Colorado, but voters didn’t legalize recreational marijuana until 2017, after the study had been completed. For the new study, researchers used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) to construct a chart of opioid-related deaths in each month, beginning in 2000. They then model-smoothed the average and compared the number of deaths at the end of 2013 to the number afterward, through 2015. The analysis showed “a statistically significant reduction” THE STUDY FOUND THAT in the trend of opioid-related deaths after recreational THE 6.5 PERCENT marijuana legalization. Peru Legalizes Medical Marijuana The Peruvian Congress in October approved a bill legalizing medical marijuana, with 67 votes in favor, just five against, and three abstentions, the bill became law with support across political parties. It legalizes the use, production and distribution of Cannabis and its derivatives for patients with chronic or terminal illnesses. “It’s encouraging that Peru is finally recognizing the urgency of providing access to medical marijuana,” Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno said, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “The government now needs to make sure that such access is meaningful, including for low-income families, and that it clears the records of parents and others who have been “THE GOVERNMENT cruelly sanctioned for using NOW NEEDS TO MAKE SURE THAT and growing marijuana for SUCH ACCESS IS medical purposes.” MEANINGFUL” The bill will become law in 60 days, after the government establishes the regulations for production and sale. The Peruvian Congress envisions a confidential registry created by the Ministry of Health for patients where doctors can provide information on the illness and recommended dose. Authorization for cultivation and production will be granted by the government through state institutions and universities will receive permits to investigate the benefits and effects of medical Cannabis. Peru began debating the decriminalization of medical marijuana in February, after Peruvian police shut down a makeshift laboratory where a group of mothers was making marijuana oil for their sick children. The raid garnered media attention and sparked a public outrage, including a march on Congress and testimonies from celebrities supporting the bill.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

andrew sullivan a n d r e w s u l l i v a n i s a p o l i t i c a l p u n d i t . Which, in our modern times, means he’s an author, blogger and was once the editor of The New Republic. He’s been on almost every political talk show and news network in this country and beyond. Sullivan identifies as a conservative, with libertarian tendencies. He’s a major advocate for Cannabis legalization at the federal level, a stance that is unsurprisingly at odds with most of his fellow conservative peers. The majority of Republicans do not favor Cannabis legalization, in fact many want our nation to head in the opposite direction. So why is Andrew Sullivan an advocate? His health. Last month, Sullivan wrote an editorial published on New York Magazine’s Daily Intelligencer blog titled “Yes, I’m Dependent on Weed.” In the article, Sullivan credits Cannabis for ending his chronic insomnia and talks about how it has helped his appetite, which was affected by a cocktail of HIV medications. He wrote that he can’t quit using Cannabis because it has been so helpful at curbing his condition’s symptoms. Sullivan has consumed Cannabis daily since 2001 and has made the rounds as a keynote speaker at events such as the 2014 Cannabis Business Conference in Portland. Like most pundits, Sullivan has ruffled feathers from time to time, and is no stranger to controversial topics. During his tenure as editor with The New Republic, the magazine generated several high profile controversies. Sullivan is a champion of LGBT rights, the environment and, of course, Cannabis. In 2010, Sullivan published “The Cannabis Closet. First Hand Accounts of The Marijuana Mainstream.” His book contains a collection of testimonials about Cannabis use from main street America: responsible parents, straight-A students, corporate executives, unwinding suburbanites and people with health conditions. His book was published prior to any state’s recreational legalization and serves as a kind of prescient nod to Cannabis normalization, showcasing just how deeply acceptance for Cannabis truly runs in mainstream America.

LIKE MOST PUNDITS, SULLIVAN HAS RUFFLED FEATHERS FROM TIME TO TIME AND IS NO STRANGER TO CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS.

Joung is a brain tumor survivor, Cannabis activist and marketing wizard who applies passion for the plant to every part of is life.

24/NOV. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

When did you first start using Cannabis?

I’ve used Cannabis since I was a teenager, I’m one of the people who is a drug war vet. I used to bring pot from Canada, bringing it down over the border on foot. I went to jail for 26 days in Whatcom County for 8.5 pounds of CB, caught in Bellingham, when I was 19.

Did getting arrested make you want to stop using pot? How has it helped in your life?

Getting arrested only made me more of an activist about Cannabis. I’ve had a really rough childhood and life, and it has always helped me. My father died in my arms of cancer at 13, and I lost my brother and mother within a few years of that. I’ve been on my own since 16, including through my own health battles.

When did you start having your own health issues?

In 2006 I started feeling like I had strep throat, and after a week my throat was so closed I had to go to the hospital for what I thought would be a penicillin shot. I actually had an infection in my throat, they rushed me into emergency surgery and had to slice my neck open and pump me full of antibiotics to fight the infection. They did MRIs and CT scans on me in that time, and when I woke up from my second surgery, there was a doctor standing over me. “I’m sorry I have to say this, but you have a brain tumor.”

That had to be devastating. How did you feel in that moment, and what did you do next?

I swore at him and said, “What the fuck are you talking about, I’m halfway awake from surgery and you’re telling me this?” I was panicked and upset and really scared honestly. I thought I had a little infection, and went from that over a couple days to multiple surgeries and learning I had a tumor. So, I tried to come to grips with it, and to seek further help. I had no insurance at the time and couldn’t get state insurance, and so for three years I lived thinking I could die at any time.

What was that like, living with that thought hanging over you? I was living in worry constantly. In 09’ I was getting more headaches, so I went back to the hospital and did a CT scan, and the doctor said you don’t have a brain tumor. I argued with him, but he was adamant I didn’t have a tumor. But the headaches didn’t go away. So in 2011 I got insurance and went to a neurosurgeon, and the first thing they told me at Swedish Hospital was, “Yes you have a tumor, and it’s almost doubled in size since 2006.”

What a terrible rollercoaster moment. What happened next?

The doctor who said I didn’t have a tumor was medically negligent, and in 2011 they sent me in for my first brain surgery to remove the tumor. I nearly died from my brain bleeding, but until now it has solved the issue. The surgery damaged the nerves in my right eye, so it barely waters now. I have to use prescription ointment and artificial tears about 20 times a day, and have super bad headaches from the nerve damage. But I’m here.

Does Cannabis help with the pain, and what about the tumor? I was always honest and open with my doctors that I used Cannabis, and my neurosurgeon said that he believed I didn’t suffer more side effects from my tumor is because of my heavy Cannabis usage. That was a positive in my eyes against the stigma of Cannabis—when my surgeon, who is one of best in country, and a teacher at University of Washington and on the board of neurosurgeons—to tell me that was positive light. To know I need to keep using and keep using heavily because this is what saved me…that’s one of the highest doctor’s advice you can get. So I said right on, I’ll keep on trucking and I’ll keep on using my medicine.

How do you feel about people’s right to use Cannabis?

All these prohibitionists are going to go down in history and be looked back on like, “What the hell were they doing, letting people die because they didn’t want to give them a plant, that could have cured others?” It almost makes me angry, that’s why I’ve been such an advocate. So many people are misinformed, and I feel like my dad and aunt could have possibly been saved with Cannabis. It seems illogical that the government doesn’t recognize it, when everyone knows the benefits firsthand.

What is Make a Mill PR and how dOES IT connect to Cannabis?

I’ve always been connected through my music label and promotions with Cannabis and people who smoke. As soon as medical and legalization took place, I knew I had to keep my foot in the door and keep doing promotions like I had for my record label. So, I decided to start Public Relations? for the industry, and I started Make a Mill PR. My first client was fresh carbon filters out of Australia, and then Tarik Rosin Presses. Since then I’ve been helping local brands as well!

How do you help Cannabis clients, and what is your driving force behind starting in the industry?

We help businesses grow. Social media promotions, helping build brands from word of mouth to hand to hand contact, online and in-person. I also do branding. Bigfoot Farms was my branding. I do marketing, I have a logo artist and graphic designer, and offer consulting for Cannabis businesses. My main purpose is to spread the good word of Cannabis, and to help champion businesses I believe in. My strongest feeling is that I don’t promote anything that isn’t positive or I wouldn’t use myself or isn’t good for the industry.

What’s your final message to people as we continue to move forward and wrestle with legalization in our country?

Please take into consideration that this is a helpful medicine for people. It’s not an illicit drug, it’s a medical drug that helps people around the world and has never killed anyone. Especially with the opiate troubles we have in this country, with doctors pushing drugs on people, we need a safer alternative. I had a brain tumor and I survived it, doubling in size and afterwards, and it’s like I did it all in my eyes through Cannabis.

It’s not an illicit drug, it’s a medical drug that helps people around the world and has never killed anyone. NOV. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

HEYLO

PURE CO2 ACDC From farm to table — or dab rig — this beautiful golden CO2 oil captures the essence of the ACDC plant in a strain-specific delicious and highly medicinal Cannabis concentrate.

Heylo, formerly known as Mother Earth’s, delivers the purest essence of a Cannabis strain with untouched and raw CO2 oil that respects the terpene profile and Cannabinoids equally. This commitment to a clean and nontoxic extraction method, free of ethanol or other hydrocarbons, delivers the purest and tastiest form of Cannabis available in the recreational market. CO2 is also used for extracting hops and essential oils, and is prized for both the purity of extraction and the clean nature of the gas—CO2 has no harmful effects for humans, and kills 99 percent of all microbial growth in any sample, resulting in an ultrapure extraction of whatever the starting material is. With this ACDC Cannabis, the process at Heylo transforms a flavorful high CBD flower into a delicious and terpy oil. Available in both a cartridge and dab applicator, we went straight for the applicator for a few low-temperature dabs. The beautiful amber colored oil has a medium viscosity, easy to pull a perfect dab off without being too thick or overly runny. As soon as the oil hits air the terpenes are released, with a floral and bright cherry citrus flavor filling the air, teasing the taste buds yearning for what’s to come. Bright orange peel and citrus hit the palate first, with a cherry berry lemon peel exhale that tickles the frontal lobes and mellows the body while sharpening the mind in a relaxing clarity. This is a THE SCORE heightened chill strain, a way to wake up without being overly high, with all f lavo r the benefits of CBD. This medicinal va lu e oil is perfect for any time or situation, from celebration to a heavy pain day, ef f ec t la b el delivering both mental freedom and physical relief in a single dab or puff. t ota l 20/20

legant curves of sun grown Cannabis sit as they did for months under the hot sun, filling a glass jar with a gourmet flavor and spectacular jar presence waiting to be smoked— or put on display. While it’s relatively easy to display a ship in a bottle, nobody ever thought a ship would be good to smoke, so we challenge you to sit one of these custom strain jars on your desk or credenza and not smoke it. We failed, and learned that picking up a hand trimmed sun grown cola from Lazy Bee Gardens requires a level of commitment that is completely worth it. You have to smoke something truly beautiful. Luckily the flower is available in standard grams to ounces, but the colas are what truly represent that best attributes of the Jack of Spades, and the effort put in by the Lazy Bee team. This indica-dominant hybrid cross of Ace of Spades and Jack the Ripper has a sharp and cutting effect on the nose that is all ripper, with pine and fresh Cannabis notes rising out of the flower that are so bright as to cleanse the palate—a purifying clean flavor with a subtle and exquisite Cannabis tease at the core. Snapping a bud reveals lighter notes of lemon and vanilla, with a hint of cheese and a subtle dankness that hints at the Ace of Spades earthy parentage. All the jars of Lazy Bee strains are sent in cardboard as well, protecting the Cannabinoids and terpenes and preserving the flower. As the buds fall off the center stem, they have a natural snap and crumble under pressure to form the best consistency for rolling or packing a bowl. The first inhale is smooth and warming, with a fresh pine flavor that provides an initial burst of euphoric energy. Within 20 minutes and a few more puffs the euphoria begins to melt into a hazy and delightful high, perfect for doing nothing at all in the best way possible. Give this strain a try and check out the rest of the sun grown fire flower and oils coming from the Lazy Bee Gardens at local recreational stores.

NORTHWEST LEAF

INTRODUCTION by NATE WILLIAMS

Fall is an absolute whirlwind of activity for the outdoor Cannabis scene. Sungrown farms have worked feverishly to harvest the crops they’ ve worked so hard all year to produce. Picture 10-pound plants being harvested by the hundred, trim machines whirring twenty four hours a day, and crews of out-of-state workers toiling day and night to get the world’s most valuable crop harvested before winter rains set in. Though cutting the plants down and carefully hauling them indoors is only half the work, a lot of the most difficult aspects of Cannabis production are now over for full-season farmers. Once harvested, the drying, curing and trimming processes are initiated as the product is readied for market. This year, the Northwest Leaf team defined what The Harvest Issue means to us and came to the conclusion that our focus needed to be exclusively on full-season sun-grown outdoor plants. This is a make or break style of growing in which farmers work year-round to harvest a single time. Success is largely dependent upon weather and timing. It usually takes years of practice and a little luck to pull off a flawless crop. This grow style produces some of the most jaw dropping, awe inspiring plants imaginable. With the right environment, some genetics will easily grow to more than 15 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter. On this trip, we had the privilege and pleasure of visiting some of Oregon’s most elite outdoor farms. Each had unique techniques, genetics and perspectives on the future of the industry and their place within it. Please enjoy this special issue and take a moment to walk among the giants with us.

PUFFIN FARMS

Ellensburg THERE IS A MAGICAL FEELING to standing among 1,500 giant plants that were selected in April and set outside for a long summer of growth, maturing into delicious multi-colored colas dancing in the October wind, waiting to be harvested and enjoyed. Eastern Washington provides a wonderful climate for growing full term Cannabis, with good soil, dry weather patterns and a whole lot of sunshine. The climate pulled the Puffin Farms team to land near Ellensburg four years ago, launching into the I-502 market with Clean Green Certified full term sun grown Cannabis. Using only natural amendments and benefits in the soil like kelp meal, worm casting compost and nematodes. Puffin Farms is as close to an organic Cannabis farm as it gets. For husband and wife team Jade Stefano and Ben Short, the farm is the culmination of providing for patients and growing since 1990s. As a naturopathic doctor, Stefano is especially cognizant of safe growing methods, and wants to educate the public about sustainable, sun grown Cannabis. “The natural cleaning system that nature brings of air, wind and rain help keep the plant healthy and clean, and from a naturopathic medicine perspective produce a more vital medicine because it’s exposed to the natural elements, and it’s supercharged with vital natural energy,” Stefano said. “Everybody needs to be educated about sustainably sourced and grown Cannabis. There’s a big disconnect among Cannabis consumers. They go to Whole Foods and want organic produce and meats, but when it comes to Cannabis they don’t ask for the same.” Puffin Farms is breaking that pattern, mainly by growing incredibly tasty and terpy Cannabis that packs a significant high and flavors that aren’t seen in indoor flowers. The material is processed into CO2 by Jeff “Church” Wilhoit into Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) for patient needs, and into flower jars and pre-rolls that prove outdoor is delicious and sustainable. Choosing Puffin Farms to smoke means a choice for sustainability and quality, one that is easy to make.

TUCKED AWAY at the base of the Olympic Mountains, a short ferry ride away from Seattle, is a family-run Cannabis business that is breathing new light into a community one bud at a time. These 200 acres of land have been in the Olsen family for more 60 years, originally operating as a dairy farm, selling milk from cows grazing on the land. In the past, there were more than seven dairy farms on the Olympic Peninsula. Jason Olsen and his wife Samantha both quit their jobs to grow Cannabis on the farm, to save the property while creating a new opportunity for their family and community. The farm is set up as a “tri-brid,” a term Jason penned. The team grows indoor flower in three different rooms. A giant light deprivation greenhouse was being built, which will supply supplementary lit greenhouse flower year-round for the farm. The final part of the “tri-brid” is the full-term outdoor garden, which looked radiating and blissful on a 70 degree October afternoon.

Several hundred plants danced in the light breeze under the golden sun, capping a growing season warm and stable for the Treehawk team. Fat colas dripping with trichomes and terpenes are great evidence that growing on the west side of the mountains is possible— even in the rain kissed peninsula. Growing outdoors always is a risk, and the team was watching the morning frosts carefully at the end of the cycle, but the weather held to finish off a beautiful summer and a spectacular crop. With nearly 400 pounds of flower harvested and 200 going into packaging as bud, the sun grown Treehawk crop is a tasty testament to the growing climate west of Seattle, and proof that passion and effort will always deliver at the end of “croptober.”

Brian Knopf founded Pickens Mountain Cannabis in 2014, building his farm halfway up the mountain that provides a scenic and ideal growing location. Likely the largest legal off grid Cannabis farm in the country, Pickens Mountain runs on a combination of solar and wind energy, with propane generators if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The 1,600 plants are managed by Knopf and only two other employees, a testament to the watering system the ex plumber designed himself. Now in his fourth growing season, Pickens Mountain is running smoothly and efficiently, with a dozen strains that thrive in the high mountain country. Bighorn sheep and other wildlife roam the property that recieves 300 days of sunshine a year, giving the thousands of plants everything they need to thrive and produce beautiful, delicious sungrown bud. With a 3,000-pound harvest this year, Pickens Mountain proves that Cannabis can be produced with a low cost, and low environmental impact, and still be high in every way that counts.

The owners and farm dogs greeted us kindly at the gate, and lead us back to the various rows of legal Cannabis just starting to be harvested. Purple Fire, Durban Poison and the award-winning CBD Cherry Wine made up a few of the planted rows. Other varieties were in the process of being pheno hunted to see if they’d make the cut for next season. Alter Farms utilizes companion plants that grow alongside Cannabis plants, attracting and hosting beneficial insects and organisms that naturally keep pests at bay. Many of the plants at Alter Farms exceed 10 feet. However some of the sativa rows will reach nearly 13 to 15 feet tall by the end of the season, making the use of an orchard ladder necessary for harvesting tops.

Hugs were freely given and sparked joints were already in rotation. It felt so good to put faces with the OMMP garden I’ve only watched from afar. Sacred Roots grows a large variety of Humboldt Seed Organization strains. Pre-98 Bubba Kush x ’76 Afghan, Fire OG BX3 and Vienna Skunk were a few of the cultivars, all fed with Elevation Organics’ full nutrient line. Each plant was terpene rich and chunking up beautifully. The area’s dry weather will allow the plants to finish nicely.

The owners Jon Cunningham and Brie Malarkey also own Sun God Medicinals, a medicinal plant and herb company which utilizes many of the plants and herbs they grow at this farm. Among the harvest are milky oat tops, passionflowers and skull caps to formulate beneficial blends that all work synergistically with cannabinoids to offer more powerful relief.

Nestled in a picturesque southern Oregon hillside, High Valley Organics is the brainchild of two brothers Cal and Jack Thomas and their mentor Monte Minchow. The brothers dropped out of college to pursue the dream in Cannabis after discovering how a small medical grow could help with their student loans. Cal and Jack bring their strong work ethics and a desire to learn and explore the latest growing techniques. They are wonderfully balanced by the wisdom and coolheadedness of Monte. Together this small, yet dedicated team is committed to producing quality full-season sun grown flower in living soil. This is High Valley Organics’ second harvest at the current location, where they plan on pulling down more than 40 strains, including Sour Skunk, Romulan and the local favorite of Purple Hindu Kush. SWEDEN CBD FARM

has operated for the last seven years under different forms: first as a hop farm and now fully as a Cannabis garden. It was previously a medical Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) garden and has transitioned to a recreationally licensed garden under the OLCC. Despite the medicinal benefits of Cannabidiol or CBD, most full-season farms focused on cultivating THC-dominant strains. This was the only recreational farm that predominately grew CBD and 1:1 ratios. In an industry where we are up to our necks in THC, it was a breath of fresh air to immerse ourselves in a recreational farm committed to growing CBD excellence. The farm is nestled in the heart of Applegate Valley, and the backdrop was absolutely stunning. The sloping hillsides and views of the surrounding Siskiyou Mountains gave a calming feel as we toured around the farm. The Cannabis plants were planted vineyard-style, directly in the ground, instead of the medical monsters we usually picture when talking about Southern Oregon. Instead of plant numbers, Cannabis farmers grow by canopy size. I was truly in weed country. It was fascinating to witness evolving fullseason cultivation techniques. “We are really basic organic growers that use a few whole form nutrients. Mulch in the form of straw and wood chips, is key to our growing system to help us conserve the limited water we have. We also add organic matter that will break down in the future,” Grower Mark Thorkelson said. Sweden CBD puts plants directly into the ground with additional organic amendments to enrich the native soil. The water comes from a seasonal pond that sustains itself from mountain water run-off, which the farm currently holds rights to. I know what you’re thinking. Typically, CBD is the Cannabis you smoke for medicine and rarely enjoy. Believe me, this is how I approached most CBD flower—until I made the trip down South. Sweden CBD is doing fantastic work with CBD cultivation. The farm specializes in the strains CBD Medi Haze, CBD Therapy and CBD Yummy. “We use feminized seeds from CBD Crew (CBD OG Kush) and the Humboldt Seed Organization. Then, via leaf tissue samples and cloning, we create THC:CBD ratios within the strains,” Thorkelson said.

JEFFREY THORKELSON, JACK BARTHELL, SARAH ERSTE & MARK THORKELSON I asked co-owner Sarah Erste why the farm chose to focus so heavily on CBD strains. “Besides that I love high CBD chocolates, I think the potential that CBD has to improve peoples’ lives is enormous. I’m amazed at how many people are using it already in diverse ways, from CBD gummies for recreation, to Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) for serious illness. I hope Oregon leads the way with CBD research and continues to expose people to the benefits of CBD,” Erste said. The CBD Green Crack 3:1 was a revelation for me. Green Crack alone is a legendary strain in itself, despite its controversial name. The bud structure was full-bodied and just as resinous as its THC-dominant counterparts. I could smell the citrus limonene with generous overtones of myrcene—this is the CBD flower you actually want to smoke. Sweden Farms delivers the craft grade of CBD-dominant flower our industry demands. Among other standout CBD crosses were the Blue Dream CBD cross and a gassy OG Kush CBD. The Blue Dream CBD was cloaked in a deep purple fade and laced with glassy trichomes. But, the true glamour queen of Sweden CBD was the amethyst tinted Raspberry Diesel CBD. Honestly, it was one of the most beautiful flower expressions I have seen in Oregon. After viewing the Raspberry Kush CBD, I have a whole new respect for the potential of CBD genetics. I commend Sweden Farms for spearheading the quality of CBD. You are truly ahead of your time.

PILOT FARM

is a gorgeous, tier 2 recreational Cannabis farm situated on the southern slope of Mount Ashland. The scenery is breathtaking; the first steps onto the property are met with a spectacular view of the valley just before the Oregon-California border. Terraced rows of plants are situated in what the farm calls “Machu Picchu,” the smaller, top portion of the canopy. We first ventured to the lower terrace which involved—I kid you not—a steep 10-minute quad ride down the treacherous, rocky slope. The upper and lower canopies are separated by roughly a mile and a half, but are located on the same address, making Pilot Farm one of the first and only OLCC licensed producers to have canopies separated a few miles apart.

SPACE CANDY

The lower canopy had a north and a south plot filled with a large variety of Mountain Girl crosses. That strain does particularly well in the high elevation climate. The Pilot Farm rarely allows outside visitors, which helps keep the Cannabis pest and disease free. Each strain is grown in native soil with little to no additives or amendments, an effort to be completely sustainable. Pilot Farm generates its own energy thanks to a large solar panel just behind the lower canopy. Many employees live on-site in small mobile homes or tents and many are seasonal.

be used in concert with rockwool to keep maintenance low and maximize potential of the medium, while minimizing the typical issues. Rockwool can be recycled and reused and has excellent drainage properties. It can support a more limited population of healthy biological inoculants, making low suspension mineral based nutrient formulas generally most suitable for this medium. With some exception, this inert medium is typically inhospitable for common Cannabis insects such as fungus gnats. There is also available literature and research on growing plants in rockwool, as it’s a very commonly used medium in hydroponic food production.

GROWSTONES As we continue to move through the mediums with increasing drainage capacity, compared with the aforementioned, this is the highest of the category when using a medium beyond the nutrient solution alone. So, if coco is the closest in consistency and drainage capacity to soil, stones are the furthest. Evolved and innovated from the predecessors, which used unsustainable expanded clay pellets, Growstones are sourced from recycled glass. Much like the name entails, they are small nuggets of porous spun glass available in multiple sizes and very easy to recycle. I’ve had mine in constant use for six years I think. Their porosity makes for a more favorable rooting environment than clay, with even higher drainage due to the uneven shapes they come in. Stones provide some decent surface area for regularly applied inoculants to colonize. The are well adapted for multiple irrigation styles and able to provide a large number of nutrient application cycles daily. I like to think of this as the most hydroponic of the medium based methods, simply because it is closest to the naked roots soaking in solution on account of the high need for frequent irrigation.

NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE (NFT) While this technique is not widely used among today’s Cannabis farmers, it’s still quite a viable method for producing bountiful hydroponic harvests using only the nutrient solution itself as the medium. In this method, the plants are suspended in what are usually smaller net pots that are inserted into a narrow, covered tray allowing the roots to grow from the pots and out into the tray. The tray is placed on an angle that allows nutrient solution, pumped into the highest point, to slowly and evenly slow down the channel of the narrow tray bathing the roots in the very shallow flow of nutrient solutions. Removing all medium between the roots and the solution has some intrinsic benefits as well as its own set of deficits. With no medium outside of the solution, the number of common Cannabis insects is extreme-

ly limited as insects require oxygen and aren’t suited to thrive in an all aquatic environment. Making changes to the medium, cleaning, flushing and replacing it is all a matter of reservoir management—which allows for great controls when it comes to treating possible disease, water quality issues, pH and TDS swings, lock out, nutrient deficiencies and the like. As we move down the list, each method relies more heavily on the mechanisms and technology being employed to create regular irrigation cycles. The nutrient film technique is no different and is still less forgiving. Unlike all the methods reviewed so far that utilize medium of some kind which holds at worst a minimal level of moisture for the roots to feed from, in any method where no medium exists technological or equipment failures must be identified and rectified within a few hours, in some cases, to avoid catastrophic crop failure. As a result, seasoned gardeners include redundancies and fail when employing such methods whenever possible.

DEEP WATER CULTURE (DWC) Perhaps responsible for some of the most mind-bending yields and growth rates, a truly dialed in deep water culture system is an awesome sight to behold. This technique also uses only the nutrient solution as the medium however, unlike the nutrient film technique, which relies on the thin depth of the “film” of nutrient solution for surface level oxygen exchange to occur providing adequate dioxide levels, deep water culture systems provides each suspended plant site with its own bucket of nutrient solution. To ensure the roots that grow into the deep pool of solution don’t suffocate, dissolved oxygen is infused into the solution through a variety of methods, which may include air stones and an air source, fuming, recirculation, electrolysis or a combination of these methods. These systems require low nutrient levels to thrive and, in my experience, can far and away out-produce any other method available by a meaningful measure. In addition to this method being highly vulnerable to technological failures with fewer options and redundancy, the systems and equipment can be: cost prohibitive, require a baseline understanding of plumbing and water pressure management and is unique in its needs compared with other mediums which share a similar recipe for success. Apply the nutrient schedule associated with a rockwool garden to a deep water culture system and your plants will likely be suited for termination in a week or less, making quality resources and information on this method more scarce. Lastly, managing and balancing a culture highly saturated in dissolved oxygen is more akin to tending to a salt water or exotic fish and coral reef tank than anything else requiring nearly constant monitoring of virtually all available data points to maximize potential and avoid failure. As fast and impressive as this method can be, it can be equally

fast and depressive at accelerating an issue from a noticeable problem to complete crop failure.

AEROPONICS No hydroponic article on mediums would be complete until mentioning the infrequently employed but deeply cool sounding aeroponic growing method. This technique often uses the very same narrow channeled trays that a nutrient film technique system employs, however it delivers the nutrient solution through an array of sprayers that are servicing a pressured manifold. The system sprays nutrient solution on the naked roots at periodic intervals and delivers huge amounts of dissolved oxygen, by way of the delivery method alone, and doesn’t require all the extra devices most frequently found in deep water culture systems. While these systems boast high growth rates, they also rely heavily on technology and tools to deliver nutrient solution to the roots. Once again, it’s with a more limited capacity for redundancy, and huge potential for catastrophic loss upon failure due to the speed at which drought stress sets it. These systems are also very often impractical for the Cannabis gardener simply because its most efficient application utilizes a huge number of sites to produce the canopy. Out of all these methods, which do you prefer or project that you would find yourself thriving with? Are you someone who values low maintenance, ease of application with a reasonable buffer for mistakes? Or are you someone who wants to buy all the gadgets, monitors and devices and be regularly taking measurements, making adjustments and tweaking things to improve them if only but slightly? Hopefully after reading through each of these descriptions you can find yourself in one more than the others. Gardening is an art form, and choosing the method is similar to selecting the medium you choose to express yourself through. Since you’re the only one who can know where you will be most fully self-expressed, choose wisely. THE WHITE HOW SHE GROWS

FAST AND FUTIOUS, she’s lush in vegetation. She

takes off and stands out right away. Without too much training, The White will grow to a medium-tall height stretching about 50 percent in flower. She’s not too sensitive with the nutrients and enjoys higher levels of P as many of the frost monsters do. In spite of the impressive average yields, it has one priority: to pound disco balls of gooey trichomes to every inch of the plant’s surface.

BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT With every single bloom absolutely coated

in a fine, delicate white and clear layer of trichomes, this bloom is outstanding. It takes on a blondishwhite appearance in stark contrast to the more granular and sandy looking trichomes. It’s one of those plants you almost don’t want to throw into the grinder...almost. The blooms have a gas and potent Kush superficial scent when first popping open the container. Going in for a closer sniff, the flowers explode with an intricate combination of lime, sweet and spicy hash and fuel but with very prominent sour notes. The mild but self-assured flavors of Diesel and Sour rush into my mouth, filling my soul with ample gulps of thick smoke. She is without the cavity crushing lung expansion found with the most elite Kush’s making for large single doses, my favorite.

EFFECTS AS EXPECTED from strains testing more than 21

percent in THC, one must approach The White with respect, awareness and possibly a helmet. These blooms provide the deceptive combination of a strong, fast onset that continues to elevate the user’s well passed intake, almost like a creeper. A well-balanced effect that lends itself in my body, perhaps if only slightly, to a more cerebral, functional and creative state. Pain free and with a warm towel wrapped around my mind, it’s clear to see the results of this blessed botanical being’s efforts in spending two months of its life devoted to creating the most resin possible.
