Thanks for picking up the first

Northwest Leaf Hemp Issue! i am excited to shine a light on some of the pioneering farms growing

hemp on the West Coast, and to get the chance to show the beauty as well as the sustainability hemp brings to the table. Truthfully and personally, I believe hemp can change the world! Our planet is being destroyed by humanity choosing to ignore a sustainable option by killing trees, burning oil, petrochemicals and discount a healthy and nutritious source of food and medicine that can meet almost all needs as a society. Hemp is the only plant that gives back to the Earth while healing as a bio accumulator, pulling heavy metals, toxins and radiation out of the soil, which is why it can be found growing at nuclear sites like Chernobyl. Where we really need hemp growing is in backyards across the country. Not merely because of the billions of dollars it can save as an industrial product, and not just because of the enormous medical benefits. It can be as simple as harvesting hemp seeds for a healthy snack. It’s about freedom. As a society, we have come far enough that we must demand the freedom to grow an industrial plant that causes no harm. Our world needs a new source of food, fuel, fiber and energy—and we can start spreading it in backyard gardens. Just as our own government asked citizens to grow hemp for victory in World War II, we must again call on our brothers and sisters to plant hemp for victory. Victory over the petrochemical companies that destroy our lands and poison our waters. Victory over the logging companies that would rather cut old growth forest than lobby to use hemp. Victory over the pharmaceutical companies that would rather patent CBD from hemp or THC from Cannabis than see people treat themselves. There is a War on Drugs, and a battle for our planet’s survival and hemp is at the center of it all. I encourage you to learn more about this plant, to find out how you can plant your own hemp garden and to help change the world one plant at a time. —Wes Abney

Men who smoke large amounts of marijuana could face infertility problems because the herb seems to get semen stoned. Researchers in Canada say it causes sperm to “swim in circles.” Regular weed smoking can cut sperm counts by as much as one-third, according to previous research, reports Scott Campbell at the Daily Mail. But “The weight of the evidence is that marijuana probably has a negative impact not only for sperm counts but REGULAR sperm function,” Dr. Victor WEED Chow of the University of SMOKING CAN CUT British Columbia said. SPERM Cannabis can also reportedly COUNTS BY AS MUCH AS decrease fertility in women ONE-THIRD by suppressing ovulation, according to some studies. “TO BE BLUNT, WE NEED TO REMOVE THE ADMINISTRATIVE BARRIERS PREVENTING LEGITIMATE RESEARCH INTO MARIJUANA.”

Couple Arrested for Marijuana While Looking for Missing Friend in Hurricane

Executive WHO Opposed Legalization Named Top Cannabis Regulator

Police are facing some serious questions on their priorities after a Texas couple was busted for marijuana while looking for a missing friend as Hurricane Harvey hit the area. Corey Mendes and his wife Christy, of Beaumont, were preparing earlier in the day to ride the storm out by getting food and supplies. Part of their supply run before they battened down the hatches was to pick up an ounce of marijuana, reports Stephen Carter of the Texas Cannabis Report. When they learned, later in the day, that a friend had gone missing, the couple headed out in their car to search for him. At one point, an officer with the Nederland Police Department pulled

Steven Hoffman, a seasoned corporate executive who opposed Cannabis legalization, was named Chair of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday. The commission is charged with implementing the legal Cannabis trade in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe. Hoffman’s appointment, made by state Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, makes him the top Cannabis regulator in the state. The 63-year-old Lincoln resident once worked at the major consulting firm Bain & Co. He will hire the commission’s executive director and other staff, and oversee the drafting of rules for marijuana cultivators, processors, and for medical and recreational dispensaries, reports Dan Adams.

14/ocT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Christy over for driving 5 mph over the speed limit, according to Corey. The officer claimed he smelled marijuana upon approaching the vehicle and proceeded to search the car. That might have been the reason, according to Corey. But it also might have been their embroidered seat covers, which featured stylized marijuana leafs. Christy ended up admitting to the officer that they were in possession of a joint. That’s when the officer found the freshly purchased ounce of weed in the glove box. Corey said they’d forgotten to get the weed out of the car after they got the call about their missing friend. They had rushed home, changed clothes, and immediately went out searching, he said.

Not only did Hoffman oppose legalization, according to Goldberg’s office, he also has absolutely zero experience in the Cannabis industry. This follows Gov. Charlie Baker’s August appointment of state Sen. Joe Ferguson as Hoffman’s fellow commissioner. Ferguson didn’t just vote against it, he actively campaigned against Question 4, which legalized pot in Massachusetts. Hoffman’s selection was immediately criticized by those in the know. They pointed out that the commission runs a real risk of being dominated by marijuana opponents, ironically enough. That would inevitably result in unreasonable regulations on Cannabis companies, and probably limited availability of the herb to consumers, as well.

It isn’t legal if you can’t

grow your own!

Several years into Washington’s legalization experiment, the Liquor and Cannabis Control Board is finally considering allowing private citizens the right to grow Cannabis, but just like the original form of legalization, what Washington is imposing is not truly speaking a legal home grow. The LCCB has offered two options for home grow besides the continuation of the status quo — where recreational growing is still illegal — and their options prove just how dystopian and out of touch the board is with the plant they are charged with regulating. The LCCB’s first option on changing up homegrow involves a permit, tracking through the seed to sale system, and a big brother type oversight to make sure every single gram of pot is accounted for. This option is untenable at best, and an excuse for a police state version of “legal pot” where citizens are tracked for small amounts of an agricultural product. Imagine someone checking in to see how many tomatoes you grew this summer? Ridiculous at best, and a personal freedom and logistic nightmare at worst. The second option also involves a permit and oversight system for the right to grow four plants, but without seed to sale tracking. Both options would make Washington the only “legal” state to require a permit to grow a legal plant, and force citizens to give up their privacy, gun rights and civil liberties to grow a plant. Being forced to put your name on a list to grow a plant isn’t freedom—it’s unnecessary control that sets a dangerous precedent.

16/ocT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

LCCB REFORM OPTION 1: TIGHTLY REGULATED RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA HOME GROWS While a permitted home grow would be better for citizens than a complete ban as is the current situation, it is not acceptable and we must send that message by taking option four to the legislature, because the board responsible for regulating Cannabis does not view it as an essential freedom or acknowledge the fact that Cannabis is far safer than alcohol ever can be. The LCCB clearly has a disconnect between the two products they regulate. One kills thousands of people yearly, has major social, healthcare and economic detriments, and can be purchased 24/7 at your local grocery store. It can also be processed at home, without a license, and is not tracked—although homebrewed or distilled alcohol carries the potential to blind or kill someone, on top of the myriad health consequences of alcohol consumption. The other drug they are in charge of regulating is a plant. It has never killed anyone, does not cause addiction or negative social, economic or health issues and can be beneficial as a medicinal product. Denying the rights of citizens in a legal state to have their own plants is not just ridiculous, it’s negligent. When I-502 was crafted there were many problems pointed out by activists like myself— excessive taxation, a lack of personal freedoms, a felony sharing law that denied home grow, and a liquor board with no experience and a ton of institutional bias running the whole show. What I was told by supporters was to accept the flaws in order to push legalization forward. Today I am happy that we legalized pot, and while the system is far from perfect, it is a positive step forward for our citizens and the country. But we must not accept the flaws again, we must not allow fear and control to reign over a plant that is meant to be free, and we must not accept bad laws. Until Cannabis home grow is regulated as homebrews, we have a major problem in Washington. Pot is not legal unless you can grow it for yourself—and we should all be free to grow a legal plant.

This option allows recreational home grows under a strict state regulatory framework based on the Cole Memo, requires a permit and only allows four plants maximum per household. All plants must be entered into the state traceability system, and it would feature requirements for security such as preventing youth access and illegal diversion. Also features a statutory provision that allows law enforcement to seize and destroy all plants if beyond limit. Jurisdiction in this option is shared between the LCCB and local authorities. It would allow recreational growers to purchase plants from licensed as long as growers have a permit, and has the same restrictions on processing marijuana that apply to medical marijuana (no combustible processing).

LCCB REFORM OPTION 2: LOCAL CONTROL OF RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA HOME GROWS This option is based on statewide standards including requirements for security, preventing youth access and preventing diversion. It also would limit plants to four per household and allow recreational growers to purchase plants from licensed growers with a permit, and would require a permit to possess plants. This option does not require plants to be entered into traceability and the state sets minimum requirements. Local jurisdictions can be more restrictive. All responsibility in this arrangement is authorized, controlled and enforced by local jurisdictions, so home grows are prohibited without local permission.

LCCB OPTION 3: RECREATIONAL HOME GROWS ARE PROHIBITED, PRESERVING STATUS QUO.

Northwest Leaf supports lccb Option #4—Take it to olympia. We ask our state legislature to grant us the same freedoms other legal states have and to regulate Cannabis like homebrew, allowing up to six plants per person and12 per household, without permits, taxation or warrantless searches.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

Montel Williams became a household name in the 1990s as host of

The tv show host was well-known for inspiring guests to spill their secrets. and when it comes to using Cannabis as medicine, Williams isn’t holding anything back.

his self-titled show, but the author, activist and media personality’s life story is far more interesting than most. Williams is a decorated veteran, having served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. He’s credited as being the first African American male to host a daytime talk show. With his television program, often called Montel, Williams began as a sort of tabloid-style host – but over time the program moved toward the positive spectrum of life and eschewed the controversial. By the time the program ended in 2008, it was more focused on uplifting messages of love and hope. Williams was dealt a tough blow in 2000 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The disease, his doctor at the time told him, would cut his life in half. Williams started to search for answers, and after being prescribed an heavy cocktail of opioids , he finally encountered a physician who recommended Cannabis. At this point, he does not smoke anymore, and instead uses concentrates. He’s also opened his own dispensary, and more recently, started Lenitiv Labs – a concentrate company focused on purely medical applications for Cannabis in California. “There have been times I’ve been so disappointed with the industry. People jump in, see it as the ‘green rush,’ and forget that 17 years ago people were dragged out of their homes with IVs in their arms, in their wheelchairs, for growing marijuana to treat awful symptoms of cancer,” Williams told Forbes this year. “As things have changed in the past five years, people have forgotten that there were patients left on the battlefield.” Today, Williams is keeping the disease at bay with Cannabis. He’s already healthier than his doctor predicted years ago with his original diagnosis. It’s important to remember that Montel Williams was an early adopter to Cannabis legalization, and he’s been doing so for more than 17 years. That puts him well ahead of many of the celebrities we’ve featured in this column. Without mainstream voices like his, we may have never seen state-level legalization in the United States. And for that, we say a very hearty ‘thank you’ and ‘cheers’ to good health for Montel!

WILLIAMS SAID HE HAS CONSUMED CANNABIS ALMOST EVERY DAY FOR 17 YEARS.

MARIJUANA MANIFESTO How Lies, Corruption, and Propaganda Kept Cannabis Illegal By JESSE VENTURA, 2017, 292 PAGES, $16.99

J

esse Ventura always gets a lot of attention and he has ever since his days as a professional wrestler. That attention, both positive and negative, only intensified when he became the Governor of Minnesota. One major reason is he tends to be a no-bullshit, straight-shooting guy. That level of candor may not be unusual for a wrestler, but it’s damned unusual for a politician. And refreshing as hell. After Washington state voters approved a weakened, no-home-grow marijuana law, Ventura rightly called out the tepidity of I-502. And his long tradition of speaking truth continues — delightfully so — in this new tome. More than ever before, the USA needs full, real legalization of both medical and recreational Cannabis and hemp. Seemingly every week goes by bringing exciting new revelations about the healthful properties of marijuana. The medicinal plant is in abundant supply, but legalization finds stiff resistance from a government corrupted by Big Pharma money and campaign cash from law enforcement and corrections industries. Ventura offers his always-interesting takes on why the government patented CBD, and how Big Pharma companies are trying for exclusive rights to create marijuana medication, and why the Drug Enforcement Administration simply cannot be trusted. Marijuana Manifesto is a rallying cry to finally end the War On Drugs. Legalizing Cannabis, Ventura notes, will serve to rejuvenate the sluggish economy and help make people healthier and happier.

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, is a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He splits his time between homes in Minnesota and Baja, Mexico.

Using the powers of Cannabis, paint and ink to transform women’s lives through medical tattoo work

26/ocT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

when did Cannabis come into your life?

I was over in New York when they were starting their medical program in 2015, and I knew had medical issues and took too many opioids, and that if I didn’t turn my life around, I wasn’t going to make it. I was at the end of my rope. I became one of the first 100 patients, and what a nightmare that program was. I moved here in March 2016 and went all-in with Cannabis.

how was the move and how did it feel to go all-in on Cannabis?

I moved over here specifically to be involved with the industry. I didn’t know how I would make it happen and I was scared, but the Northwest Leaf and other activists inspired me to push forward. It is why the paintings exist, it’s why I’m still alive, it’s mother Cannabis. Cannabis takes the power from big pharma and puts it back in our hands, to make us in charge of our own health and free medicine.

Why do you use medical Cannabis?

The main reason for me is chronic severe spine, neck and knee pain. I was crippled at 16 in a terrible accident, and I was operated on experimentally by surgeons and they severed my main ligament and created a bigger problem than they solved. It’s just gone downhill from there. I’ve also been diagnosed with clinical depression from my childhood, PTSD, severe anxiety, hyper-thyroid condition and I’m a cancer survivor. I’m living, walking proof that Cannabis works.

What made you want to make your own topical line?

I spent thousands of dollars when I moved here from New York learning about THC and CBD, and spent more money taking time to become a medical consultant certified by the state, I learned about it and decided in January to make my own topical and perfected the recipe. It took a lot of time and energy, experimenting and passion to do it. You can make a huge difference as a consumer where you put your money. Stop taking big pharma, stop prescriptions and start Cannabis.

In addition to working as a Cannabis activist and fine artist, you also help women who have survived breast Cancer with your company. can you talk to us a bit about Aeronip?

I sold my house in Utah in 2007, I moved to New York to do fine art, and in 2008 the subprime banksters stole every option I had to succeed, and I lost everything along with millions of others. I had nothing. I went on unemployment and I had to make a career change. I wanted to combine medicine and art, so I reinvented myself and applied the same artistic techniques for canvas to create on the human body. I invested all my money and time to become an aerobic architect and have found my passion and a way to help at the same time.

what do you mean When you call yourself an architect?

I am not a tattoo artist. I have trademarked a new word, Aeronip, which is the areola and nipple complex at the same time. I’m the only one in the world with 40 years of fine art experience, a whole lifetime of art behind what I do and I set the benchmark for quality standards for Aeronip.

This is our power as Americans and humans that belongs to us. the medicinal quality of Cannabis is here, right now.

What does Aeronip provide for the women that seek your service, and how can they connect with you?

It’s your dignity. At Final Mile Ink we are life changers, and as a fine artist I switched my efforts from canvas and focused on the chest of women. It brings women back to life, and returns their dignity and sense of self. I have a procedure room in Shoreline and have exam rooms in multiple states to help. Medical pigmentation is a choice, and everybody is scared, but why let another minute go by? Breast Cancer survivors have seen the light at the end of the tunnel, every breast cancer survivor is a warrior. And you have to go the final mile and do one more thing for yourself.

You talk to your patients about Cannabis and push them to treat and heal using it. What drives you to do that?

Final Mile Ink is the only medical pigment company providing tattooing that is an advocate for Cannabis in the country. Because I am medically certified I understand medical use, and that’s why I say Cannabis helps prevent and cure breast cancer, and it destroys bad cells with carcinogenic information, and it reestablishes balance in the body. Patent 6630507—our government holds the patent. This is our power as Americans and humans that belongs to us. The medicinal quality of Cannabis is here, right now. I don’t hand out Cannabis, I’m not a doctor, I just share my information and my passion for this plant. We talk about it, they open their eyes to the medicine and the healing process.

Do you have a message for people thinking about using Cannabis medically or working as cannabis activists?

Use your protest ability to become proactive, lead by example, and do! Mother Cannabis guides you, she will, you can depend on her. We all must be brave to live in the land of the free these days, we must exercise our right to be in charge of our own good health. Grow strong, grow your own medicine in your kitchen for free. Just do it. It’s on the planet for our consumption, not for the control of our government. We have that power now, and Cannabis can do that with just one person.

>>HI-TUNES FOUNDER profile

By WES ABNEY | PHOTOS by @BERMANPHOTOS

SCOTT MCKINLEY A JOINT WITH A SOUNDTRACK? IT’S THE IDEA BEHIND HI-TUNES, THE MUSIC LICENSING SERVICE HELPING ARTISTS GET PAID AND CONSUMERS GET A ROCKING HIGH. WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE WORKING WITH CANNABIS? I started as a pro photographer shooting UFC fights for USA Today and then I went overseas and shot a jewelry and lingerie line in Italy, and came back home and realized I didn’t like shooting models or fights. After accepting a gig to manage a band and travel with them, I realized music was the niche I truly loved.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED \ IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? In trying to manage the band I contacted the only well-off person I know, Mike Brunson, owner of Caviar Gold. I flew him into Seattle, and that night he rented out the penthouse suite in the Olive hotel and had a crazy party, and he announced to everyone including me that we had created CaviGold records. He announced I was half partner of a record label to me as a surprise at the event!

THAT’S WILD! WHAT CAME NEXT? I was still working at Verizon at that time, and I filed my separation paperwork in case I wanted or needed to get hired back, and I headed to California. I filled up my trunk and drove around wild west style, city to city all over the entire state, learning how to sell Cannabis and about the entire industry.

30/ocT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

During the first nine days Mike drove with me and made me smoke Cavi’s nonstop. I had to get my tolerance up! In California dispensaries you can smoke inside, so when you come in on a sales call they say, “light that shit up!” I had to pull over quite a few times during the beginning, and by the end I brought down two drivers, so I could be stoned all day selling products and not worry about driving.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH CAVIGOLD RECORDS I’ve always been executive producer and in charge of getting bands recorded, setting up distribution, doing tours, music videos, photoshoots… top down, everything to release a musical project, I was in charge. Besides Sub Pop we are the only local record label that actually puts bands on tour and records and gets the music pushing all over the world.

HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO START HI-TUNES? I’ve been pitching putting Quick Response (QR) codes on weed for two or three years but we haven’t been able to make the song sale count as Soundscan data for the musician, which is what tracks music sales for artists. But the music industry is so incredibly broken, I don’t believe what people need is data on song sales—what we need is to get people online, to artists’ social media, to get merchandise sales going and for people to find out where shows are. To get connections to fans, it’s the number one goal.

WHAT IS THE PITCH FOR CONSUMERS? Music and pot go hand in hand. You listen to music deeper when you are stoned. So, I created a way where each Hi-Tunes joint comes with a QR code for a free song download from a different artist. We have 25 different artists so far on board, with a goal to have 300, covering all genres and styles. If you’re going to smoke a joint, you’ll get stoned, you can scan it and see what that artist has to offer. Sometimes you’ll scan and love the free music, and sometimes you will hate it—but if you like the weed, you come back and try a different song each time.

MUSIC AND POT GO HAND IN HAND. YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC DEEPER WHEN YOU ARE STONED.

Hi-Tunes.com

WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

MUSIC WE LOVE. IS THE WEED GOOD? That was the number one thing with our artists. It has to be fire. We use an 80 percent flower blend of Bubba Kush with a 20 percent infusion of kief, and they really hit well. Right now we are offering pre-rolls at stores across Washington, but soon we will be doing all sizes of flower from grams to ounces. So far everyone loves the joints, and they definitely get you stoned!

HOW ARE ARTISTS REACTING?

Some of the biggest artists I have worked with are so enamored by the fact they can have a joint with their name on it, and they are excited to send fans into stores. It’s a brilliant plan for marketing, it gives me the ability to have more artist meet-and-greets in the store, and the store will actually be able to say “I’ll pay for meet-and greets by paying for product line.” So everybody wins. The store profits from the product line and the artist gets paid from each joint sold. Instead of spending money and hoping it comes back in marketing, they can actually spend it and sell it and get money back and the artist still gets paid.

WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR THE MUSIC BIZ? I want music to have money in it again. I would love for this to become a trend, for more venues to open to help music make money again. Monster could do an energy drink line with a code you could scan, it’s not just weed. This all started for me with a Buddhist Monk I knew when I was 16, who introduced me to a bunch of crazy awesome music. He used to say, “Smoke this and listen to that.” That’s what I want people to do. Enjoy music, relax more, smoke our Hi-Tunes joints and listen to good music.

true Northwest strain, the Sweet Tahoe blends bag appeal, an incredible candycoated flavor and a medical heritage all packed into a delicious top shelf flower. The team behind Platinum Gardens has been producing boutique Cannabis flowers and concentrates for years, transitioning from medical into the recreational marketplace and continuing the mission to deliver medical and connoisseur grade products at a competitive price. As one of its own creations, the Sweet Tahoe represents the hard work and energy put into the garden, and delivers on every count for a truly unique high. Popping open a bag unveils a thick sweet and earthy flavor, with deep woodsy and chocolatey notes dominating the front. The rear is all fruity pebbles candy coating, with a sappy-sugary sweetness that begs to be smoked. A cross of Tahoe OG and Alice in Wonderland, this sativa dominant hybrid teases the nose and palate with a flavor that is good enough to eat. Snapping a flower delivers a satisfying break, with a perfect cure and a light layer of stickiness and a dusting of trichomes that covers fingertips. The bud structure is solid without being overly dense, and breaks up finely for either joints or bowls. We enjoyed the pre-rolls from Platinum Gardens as much as we did the raw flower, with a great burn rate and sweet flavor, making their over-the-counter joints a delicious treat. But the best way to consume flower is always to do so in the raw, and we couldn’t wait to take a fat rip off this crystalline bud. The first inhale is earth and light pine, with a sweet blast of flavor that brings fruit and candy to the palate in thick waves. With almost no cough, the exhale is clean and dissipates with a mild tingly warmth that begs for another hit. Effects hit quickly, with an uplifting rush and an intense energy and euphoria that is almost dizzying at first, but extremely pleasurable as waves of sativa goodness pass from mind into body. The hybrid effects settle in after the first 30 minutes, leveling out into a happy daytime high that can fit into any schedule or activity with ease and fun.

OREGON FUSION

Oregon Fusion’s farm is found on a beautiful property in Boring, Oregon. The company grows and processes hemp and aims to create a diverse selection of products for consumers worldwide. Owner and founder Adam Kurtz, relocated to Oregon from New York after successful careers in both the fresh cut flower and commercial photography industries. After careful consideration of the laws in each legalized state, Kurtz picked Oregon for its lax structure, low permit cost and extreme lack of market competition. To give some perspective on just how extreme, Oregon clocked in at only 20 registered acres while states such as Kentucky had more than 1,700 and Colorado had more than 3,600. Oregon Fusion produces honey products, olive oil, whole plant extracts and more using high end super critical CO2 extraction machines. Adam utilizes his tried and true farmers market approach to selling his products and regularly has booth space at the Happy Valley Farmers Market held annually from late April to the end of September in Clackamas.

One can almost envision teachers leading students out into the field to teach about our world’s most versatile plant. Boring Hemp Company farms organically with inputs limited to dry amendments and clean well water from the property. The farm continually works to find the most efficient growing, harvesting and processing methods as well as to educate fellow farmers and provide seed for those looking to farm the plant.

WHY HEMP MATTERS As

a kid, I was taught we should always try to leave the world a better place than we found it. And as a kid, it seemed simple. If you go hiking, pick up your trash. Captain Planet reinforced this message—we all need to come together to take care of our planet. At some point, our collective home became second to simple, easy products and corporate profits. It’s time we changed that. Locking someone in a cage for a plant makes as much sense as making a synthetic plastic that can be made with a plant fiber. Which is to say, none. What does it make sense is that for nearly a century our country’s allowed corporate special interests to dominate law and order, locking our brothers and sisters in jail for Cannabis while hiding the benefits of hemp from the masses? People are waking up, not only to injustices surrounding the War on Drugs in relation to Cannabis and hemp, but to the greater problems our world is heading toward, quickly. If someone had a cure for cancer and didn’t release it, morally it’s unthinkable, and potentially a crime against humanity. So, shouldn’t cutting down old growth forest instead of harvesting hemp be looked at in the same way? Or injecting chemicals in our groundwater for fracking natural gas, when we have a plant that can create a bio-alternative? Burning any gas or oil from the earth, when we have endless wind energy, solar and tidal power? The evidence surrounding climate change is undeniable—the consequences of our collective carbon footprint are only now being felt. We must demand accountability and change, for future generations and the planet we call home. Hemp has more than 50,000 documented uses that involve every aspect of human life. From cleaning up pollution and radiation to providing food, fuel and clothing—hemp can provide almost everything we need as a society in a sustainable way. Our hemp issue this year focuses primarily on the farms that are emerging in Oregon, the first wave of a growing industry bringing change and hope for our future. American farms need profitable, sustainable crops that are not controlled by Monsanto or dependent on government subsidies to be profitable. Hemp is an in-demand product that our country spends hundreds of millions of dollars importing yearly. That could switch to an export commodity that creates jobs and raises the domestic GDP, it’s happening in the Northwest. It’s never too late to make change, and the progress being made in the Northwest is a tribute to exactly that. Oregon Leaf is honored to share these farms pushing the forefront of the hemp industry, a glimpse into the products and a few of the 50,000 uses for hemp.

HEMP PRESS

Hemp Press was founded in 2013 by Matthew Glyer as modern day America’s first exclusively hemp based print company. This means Hemp Press does not print on any tree-based paper, but exclusively on processed hemp fiber paper. There are fewer than eight companies printing on hemp paper in the United States and Glyer’s company is the only one to do it exclusively. Hemp Press provides businesses with packaging, flyers, posters, business cards and more, all with better pricing and turn-around while using only American manufacturing and paying living wages to Oregonians. The company employs eight individuals at its Eugene’s headquarters. In addition to traditional promotional materials under Hemp Press, Glyer also prints business cards that double as a small sheet of joint tips under a brand called Crutch Card. Unknown to many, traditional inks are labeled hazardous by OSHA, which is why the company developed proprietary water based inks safe for use on the rolling paper tips. “At the core of my passion to empower industrial hemp for paper is the protection of our forests from the devastating impact of the global print and paper industry, which cuts down over 7.5 billion trees a year for paper alone,” Glyer said. “We hope to restore a regenerative, sustainable hemp economy to American soil and bring meaningful industrial, agricultural and manufacturing jobs to Oregon.”

NORTHWEST LEAF

LEARN ABOUT HEMP This month, our Oregon team decided to dive in and explore the vast world of hemp for our first ever Hemp Issue of Northwest Leaf. Oregon began granting hemp farming permits in 2014 and is now up to more than 3,400 acres of hemp state wide. It is our hope that with this issue, and with each issue annually hereafter, we can inspire individuals to cultivate, process and innovate with this amazing plant we’ve been so blessed to know. From food to fuel to clothing to building materials, to medicine to bioremediation, the hemp plant provides it all, making it the most diverse and usable plant mankind has available. The famed Jack Herer once wrote “I don’t know if hemp is going to save the world, but it’s the only thing that can.”

We wholeheartedly agree.

CBD DAB ROCKS 66/OCT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

I was fortunate enough to review the “Dab Rocks” from Irie which is a hemp derived CBD isolate. 3 solid crystal rocks made up this half gram as it was rather difficult trying to break off a piece for a dab. The isolate is most effective when dabbed, preferably mixed with a THC extract to provide an entourage effect. The crystals dabbed smoothly and melted into a perfectly clear liquid with no visible impurities. Moments after dabbing a warm, relaxing sensation washed over my body as I began to feel my anxiety dissipate. CBD isolate is versatile as it can be dabbed or melted down into foods and capsules to be ingested. Hemp CBD products are a great way for people who can’t or don’t want to ingest or smoke THC as they offer relief for a variety of symptoms and are also easily accessible across the United States.

HOW THIS WORKS: When the fan is on, it pulls air through the evenly spaced holes and over the cooling pad, evaporating the water and decreasing the air temperature from the air exhausting out the fan. WINDOW UNIT Window units can be a very effective way to remove fairly large amounts of heat from the air with moderate efficiency. Window units use the evaporation principle like the swamp coolers, but use refrigerant instead of water. The advantage to using a chemical refrigerant is that it evaporates into a gas from a liquid at a much cooler temperature than water does. As a result, it doesn’t require the same warm dry environment that a water-driven device does, and can operate efficiently in a much wider range of climates. A window unit’s refrigerant is pumped through pressurized copper coils like in a traditional air conditioner. These pipes are woven into a back and forth “s” formation to maximize surface area. Then the unit pulls air from inside the room and over the coils. The air, even at quite ambient temperatures, is warm enough to change the refrigerant from the liquid to gas, and this change pulls heat from the air by the time it is pushed out the exhaust portion as much cooler air. Things get a little bit more complicated at this point. The refrigerant needs to be changed from its gaseous state back to its liquid state but, as mentioned, it requires very little heat to evaporate it … this is where the compressor comes in. When a volume of gas occupies a smaller and smaller space, the pressure in that space increases. If the pressure reaches a critical level, that gas can change states to a liquid, which is a cooling process. This is exactly what happens to the refrigerant as it moves into the compressor and is turned back into the volatile refrigerant liquid, ready to be heated into a gas and pull heat from the air. Round and round the refrigerant goes as the unit moves air over the coils, changing it from a liquid to gas, then cooling it from gas to liquid through compression. The compressor is mounted on the back of the unit and requires another fan pushing ambient air over the compressor to cool it off from normal operation. This portion is placed outside the window, so no air exchange occurs actively from the inside air and the air that is pushed over the compressor cooling it. Although the units are not specifically sealed and so inside air can “leak” to the outside, it’s not an active exchange.

MINI-SPLIT I like to think of a mini-split air conditioner as a larger, more powerful window unit that doesn’t require a window for installation. A mini split literally “splits” the air conditioning unit into two pieces. The first is essentially the fan, called the blower. They are usually long, rectangular boxes containing an elongated squirrel cage-style fan and the pressurized coil of copper that the refrigerant flows through. The difference is that mini-splits have larger, more powerful compressors capable of handling a large volume of refrigerant. In a mini-split, the compressor is placed outside the building adjacent to the blower. Between the blower and the compressor, two copper lines either push fresh liquid coolant from the compressor to the stack of coils inside the blower, or pull the used gaseous refrigerant (having passed through the bank of coils inside the blower) back to the compressor to be changed back to a liquid and used again. These systems have the advantage of having absolutely, 100 percent, no air exchange as both parts of the unit are completely separated. In addition, the compressor is both bigger and equipped with a large fan, allowing these units to both handle a larger total volume of heat as well as do so often at a higher efficiency (higher seer value). COMMERCIAL-GRADE Even the mini-split style system has its limitations. First and foremost, the largest compressor manufactured for these units is a 3-ton. While some units offer multiple “zones” by providing independent blowers that operate off the same compressor and market the units as providing more than three tons of cooling, in order to eclipse a 3-ton compressor, you must make the jump to commercial-grade. Commercial-grade units are beefed-up versions of mini-splits that offer several advantages. The blower commercial units are designed to push air from a central location through complex duct work while losing minimal air pressure. As a result, they are equipped with very large fans and blowers, which can be easily mounted outside the environment they actively cool by piping HVAC channels from the blower into the garden area. These systems also can be modified to include integrated carbon and UV lighting filtration systems to purify and clean the air as it cools. You can also alter the humidity at which the unit exhausts its air by integrating a humidifier or dehumidifier. The compressors for these systems are more powerful than mini-split systems, and exceed the minisplit’s 3-ton. Commercial systems are still no different in the way they operate than a swamp cooler. They simply have a much larger volume of refrigerant, in-

creased compressor capacity to manage that refrigerant, a larger, more efficiently spaced bank of copper coils and a giant fan pushing a tremendous amount of air over those coils. Simply due to the increased efficiency built into the blower, these commercial-grade units require significantly less capacity to cool the same load when compared to mini-split units, allowing much lower total cooling capacity to manage larger loads of heat. Efficiency is the name of the game with these units and they often come with more advanced digital thermostats capable of running still more customized cooling programs. PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONER (AVOID) Portable air conditioning units are so incredibly inefficient that I do not recommend them for growing. Not only are all portable units (even ones with dual hoses) assured to make the exhaust area smell exactly like your garden, the efficiency ratings are not accurate due to their design. The compressor sits inside the unit so the unit itself is always producing heat. It requires the freshly cooled ambient air to be used to cool this compressor so it’s both sucking in air to be cooled with refrigerant as well to be pushed over the compressor. While portable air conditioners can be handy at cooling a living area and moving from room to room, their massive inefficiency and prolific smell issues makes them the last choice for Cannabis gardens. Selecting the correct cooling system for your gardening needs is a critical decision. In general most hobby-level growers only need a smaller supplemental unit they can employ intermittently when temperatures fall outside the cool temperate climate most Pacific Northwesterners have become accustomed to. I hope this article provides some insight for those that are considering large cooling installations as well. If you have questions about your own cooling needs or have specific questions on a particular unit, never hesitate to contact me for an opinion at DrScanderson@protonmail.com. As always, HAPPY GARDENING!!!!
