In doing so, you are helping to spread the cause of a natural plant that has more uses than any single plant in the world. Founded in 2010, Northwest Leaf reaches 20,000 patients authorized for medical marijuana across Washington State and the greater community.

We are committed to serving as a source of information and education, and covering relevant cultural events in the greater I-5 corridor area. Our goal is to reverse the stigma associated with marijuana from decades of misinformation and fear — and replace it with truth. Marijuana is a growing solution to many medical issues and should be viewed as a source of inspiration and hope for patients worldwide.

Legitimate, legal medical marijuana patients should not be persecuted, and we stand by our reporting of law enforcement misdeeds. We also support the overall cause for hemp, which is a viable resource for a variety of commercial applications. Hemp is a clean, carbon neutral fiber source that is used all over the world, and can lessen dependency on strained resources. Look for Northwest Leaf at

OPINION

nightmare California Feds stomp patient rights as access points across the Golden State close amid pressure. Is Washington next?

A NORTHWEST LEAF OPINION

Drug War Facts Out of the 11,469,120 people arrested for marijuana in the last 15 years, 10,106,550 were arrested for possession alone, as drugwarfacts.org notes.

15

The DEA’s Administrative Law Judge, Francis Young concluded: “In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For example, eating 10 raw potatoes can result in a toxic response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death.”

10 1972

And as the website CannabisConsumers. org notes, “Marijuana’s relative potential for harm to the vast majority of individual users and its actual impact on society does not justify a social policy designed to seek out and firmly punish those who use it,” a stat revealed in President Nixon’s National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse in 1972.

S

ince 1996, California voters have made a decision to recognize medical marijuana. As the years have gone by, the nation has seen 15 more states follow suit, including our home state of Washington. Despite these laws being adopted across the country the Federal Government still targets medical patients for prosecution and seizure in questionable policies. This war on (legal and recognized) marijuana has reached a forefront in California, where the federal government has moved this month to shut down 38+ dispensaries. This war must stop. Obama was elected in part by pro medical marijuana voters who assumed he would follow the Ogden Memo. For those unfamiliar, it was an official Federal memo outlining an end to targeting medical marijuana patients. Then

the Department of Justice issued the Cole Memo, which stated that dispensaries could be prosecuted, in a change last July. Since its release, Obama has overseen, and tacitly approved of, four California US Attorneys targeting dispensaries in the Central District of California from Los Angeles to San Diego. This has been accomplished through harassment of landlords and dispensary owners. The scare tactics include threat of property seizure for landlords who rent to dispensaries, even those renting to legal and licensed dispensaries. This is another untenable sign of out of touch politicians. Representatives thinking of allegiances elsewhere above the needs of countless patients, a.k.a legal constituents. These actions are clearly another example of the failed “War on Drugs.” In California, it's costing the state millions in lost tax

#1

Although President Eisenhower began the original “new war on narcotic addiction” on Nov. 27, 1954, the real war began June 17, 1971. That’s the date President Nixon declared a “War on Drugs,” naming narcotics “Public Enemy #1 in a historic speech. The war on drugs has needlessly destroyed lives, wrecked families and cost the taxpayers millions for unconstitutional raids

revenue, along with costs associated in the enhanced law enforcement. For the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, one of California's oldest dispensaries, the new policies mean shutting down a business that paid its taxes for 14 years. The people of California voted to allow medical marijuana in 1996. It was the will of the people then, as it is now. It is unacceptable for the Federal Government to deny the will of the people in California, or any other state. Let the people decide their future and course of medical treatment. Our job now is to prevent Washington State from becoming the next headline. Support the fight for medical marijuana across the nation and contact the White House at (202) 4561111 or contact the California U.S. Attorney’s office online to express your desire for change!

Drug War Facts: The long arm of the law has landed a lot of people in jail for these minor drug offenses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 55 percent of federal prisoners and 21 percent of state-level prisoners are incarcerated on the basis of drugrelated offenses. This means that over a half million people are presently incarcerated as a result of anti-drug laws--more than the population of Wyoming, notes CivilLiberty.com.

Out of step with the people >> President Obama ignores the 50 percent of Americans favoring legalizing marijuana

F

or years, American’s desire to legalize marijuana has hovered in the mid-40 percent range. A new Gallup poll released late October shows a record high 50 percent of Americans support legalizing Cannabis. It’s a breakthrough that has divided the country. Pot proponents hailed it as a sign of the country moving forward. Opponents said so what, results like those are “meaningless.” All told, legalizing marijuana would unequivocally lead to reduced prison populations and millions of dollars in revenue for cash-strapped states across the country. But not everyone is down with the green. In September, President Obama unleashed a website called We The

8

People, where

150,000 have civilians may signed online register petitions petitions and gather

e-signatures for issues they care about. Within moments, NORML, the marijuana reform org, had penned a petition to legalize marijuana. It only needed 5,000 signatures to receive an official response from Obama. 10,000 were gathered in the first 10 minutes. At its peak last month, five people signed the petition every second. Ultimately, the majority of the top 10 petitions on the site are marijuana related, and The White House has summarily rejected their message. Together, the marijuana petitions have been signed 150,000 times. It’s telling how important this issue is to

the American people. But alas, Obama continues to push resolutely anti-marijuana policies and actions. As for American’s approval of Mr. Obama, it is telling that his average approval is just 40 percent – Bush II proportions. Another petition on the We The People website was started by a retired cop, Baltimore narcotics officer Neill Franklin. The man now serves as executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), a group of cops, judges and prosecutors who support legalizing and regulating drugs. Simply put, Franklin just wants the feds to stop meddling with the states over marijuana law, and for President Obama to listen

to the will of the people. “If the president and his advisers think they’re being politically savvy by shying away from muchneeded change to our drug policies, they’re wrong,” Franklin said. “The recent Gallup poll shows that more Americans support legalizing marijuana than support continuing prohibition, so the administration is clearly out of step with the people it claims to represent. Franklin added: “It’s maddening that the administration wants to continue failed prohibition polices that do nothing to reduce drug use and succeed only in funneling billions of dollars into the pockets of the cartels and gangs that control the illegal market.” Now how can Obama walk away from that?

ometimes you don’t feel like cooking, so you order out. What will it be? Spicy Thai? How about pizza? You might want to be wary of the last option. Last month, Frederick Smith, a medical marijuana patient in Colorado, ordered a pizza from Papa John’s shortly after smoking a bowl. When the pizza man arrived, he smelled the weed and unbeknownst called the cops. The driver said he believed that the activities were harming Smith’s 9-year-old daughter, who was playing inside at the time, away from the room. “It is daily pain relief for me. I smoked some medical marijuana to relieve my knee pain,” said Smith, who injured his leg in a bike accident, and does not smoke

He called Papa John’s to complain and also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. “I wanted to be able to use medical marijuana and not feel harassed,” Smith said. Smith said Papa John’s never even apologized, according to the site 9news.com. “Papa John’s of Colorado wants to stand behind the decision that

this delivery driver made,” read a company press release. “He was acting as a concerned citizen and for what he believes was the best interests of our community.” Though medical marijuana is legal in Colorado, it remains illegal under federal law. Smith said he plans to sue the company, but Papa John’s said they are not liable, since the driver’s actions weren’t in his job description. Meanwhile, a rival pizza company, Sexy Pizza, has offered Smith one free pizza per month until voters approve a 2012 ballot initiative to legalize marijuana possession for recreational use. The issue is likely to pop up more in the future. “This is no laughing matter,” Smith said. “What he did was serious.”

arijuana users in Chicago could be in luck if a new city council ordinance passes. Possession of 10 grams or less would yield a $200 fine and up to 10 hours of community service. That’s a hefty improvement for the misdemeanor charge that currently gets Windy Citiers a $1,500 fine and half a year in jail. Oh yeah, don’t forget the criminal record. “We want to make it clear, we’re not approving of the smoking of pot,” said Ariel Reboyras, the city council alderman. “What we’re asking is for the police to make the right decision when someone has 10 grams or less in their possession. Simply write them a ticket and let them go. That police officer will stay working on his beat.”

NM, was charged with criminal solicitation after police said she tried to buy marijuana through a thinly veiled ad they read on Craigslist. Normally, the classified ads website is used for buying cars, trading concert tickets and meeting women — but not usually Mary Jane herself. In her ad, Dave wrote that she was new to the area and looking to buy weed. Police arranged to meet her in a nearby parking lot. Then they arrested her. “I was really surprised,” said Roswell Police Sgt. Ty Sharpe “that someone would actually put on there they were looking for weed, an actually illegal product, to the fact that I called my boss to make sure it wasn’t one of our guys trying to do a reverse sting.”

The fake stimulants can cause heart problems and paranoia, among a host of concerns over quality control in the products that commonly grace gas station shelves. Expo Experiences >> Finding a nervous Cali scene among competitive innovation at the West Coast Cannabis Expo in San Francisco Story & Photo by Bonnie F/Northwest Leaf Contributor

T

raveling to other medical marijuana states is my duty as an activist. Experiencing other models of medical marijuana governance aides in my understanding of regional and federal legal interpretations in Washington State. Upon entering the First Annual West Coast Cannabis Expo, I was greeted with VIP access passes from a fellow activist in San Francisco. Being a California medical marijuana patient, I was granted Prop 215 patient access as well. Attendance, though, was sparse. Attendee John Davis, chairman of the Board of Directors of Seattle Hempfest, estimates around 5,000 visited the three-day event, compared to 300,000 at our Hempfest. Taking place at San Francisco’s famous Cow Palace, the West Coast Cannabis Expo occupied only one wing and produced only one stage. The small size and turnout of the event, however, did not reflect the quality of the expo. Among the booths were several innovative

companies and organizations that are unique among the medical marijuana community. Cannajobs, for instance, is a company catered to individuals seeking a career in the booming cannabusiness. Statewide is an insurance company that insures medical marijuana coops, grows and facilities in several states. Steephill, SW Analytical and SC Labratories were among the cannabis quality testing services present at the expo. I picked up an Omicron Vaporizer; a gadget that allows you to vaporize your own honey oil. Across the West Coast Cannabis Expo, there was a wide variety of unique cannabis businesses. The competition forces California companies to step up the professionalism of their presentation and drive down prices. Bubble hash was ubiquitous throughout the event, mostly for $10/gram or less. That’s cheap! Famous California Bhang chocolates provided a leather lounge for legal California patients in the Prop 215 area. TetraLabs promoted

their THC Gold Mist sublingual spray with full length posters and employees dressed dapperly in suits. The most intriguing element of the West Coast Cannabis Expo was the coincidental occurrence with our government’s attacks on California’s medical marijuana industry. As of press time — many of the 38 dispensaries targeted have closed due to landlord pressures. Cheryl Shuman, an organizer of the West Coast Cannabis Expo, reports that everyone at the Expo was concerned for California’s dispensary community. In the days leading up to the expo, the IRS ruled that dispensaries cannot deduct standard business expenses such as rent and payroll. Steve DeAngelo, the director of Harborside Health Center in southern California, discussed his legal battle with the IRS. “They are trying to tax

us out of existence” DeAngelo says. Lynette Shaw, owner of Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, said her nonprofit organization will be unable to pay the million dollars in taxes the IRS is demanding because of the ruling. Ultimately, Shaw assures us, she will bring it to the Supreme Court for a ruling. Cases like Shaw and DeAngelo’s, show that medical marijuana policies are coming to an absolute breaking point and patients are getting tired of the run around. The first annual West Coast Cannabis Expo was certainly a prime example of the exciting activity in the nation’s medical marijuana movement. Innovative products, specialized services, and high caliber professionalism are all signs that legalization is near. And the work of empowered activists such as Shaw and DeAngelo are making sure of it.

The most intriguing part of the Expo was how it coincided with the attack on California’s medical marijuana industry.

Sip Patients

>> Joe Ganje’s coffee helps patients get from caffeinated to medicated By Wes Abney | Photo by Daniel Berman

A

fter just a few sips, the effects — bright rolling spikes of energy and calm — begin to take hold. Half an hour later and I was reaching for another cup and tossing away the Folgers. Entering Washington access points is Ganje’s Coffee - a local blend produced near Seattle by the aptly named Joe Ganje. He explained his love for coffee from his living room couch — where, on a dreary October afternoon, a gruesome Halloween statue stood nearby. It coldly offered up a plate of his signature beans in silver pouches. But back to the beans. “I’ve been roasting regular coffee since a friend introduced me in 2006,” Joe said. “As soon as I started, I was hooked.” His custom blend relies on the strain New Freezeland Orange, or NFO — a heavy Indica that contrasts and complements the energy of the coffee well. “It’s unbelievable how well it works. The medicine glides right into the caffeine for a perfect blend,” he said. The coffee beans, roasted personally, are of the Brazilian dark roast variety. They have a deep, almost sensual flavor. There is no obvious taste of marijuana, but a light numbness of the tongue follows a second cup of the brew. The medible warmth, felt deep in the gut, is immediate. We didn’t require that refill after all. As fate would have it, Joe got into coffee because of his back. He injured it when a semi-truck backed into him during a shift driving a forklift everyday. Now he lives with a titanium plate in his neck. Ongoing neck and back pain have left him in a quagmire traditional pharmaceuticals can’t solve. “I was seeing 20+ specialists, prescribed tons of drugs, and dealing with vertigo caused by the accident,” Joe said. “Since becoming a patient, marijuana has completely solved my pain management,” he said in a hushed, calm tone.

16

For wholesale information contact Joe Ganje at Ganjeroast@gmail.com or (425) 774-4669

To thank the clinic that first authorized him for medical cannabis use, Joe started bringing by his coffee. His unmedicated coffee. That is until patients started asking questions. Like this one: can you medicate your coffee? Joe created the blend, he said, in a matter of hours. “One day I set out to medicate it. The answer was right there in front of me” Joe said. The wiry man hasn’t stopped since. His success, Joe speculates, might come from some innate ability. “Most roasters use a temperature as a guide for when beans are done. But every bean is different, and needs

a different touch,’ he said. “I roast by smell and sound, trusting a natural instinct for when they’re done.” Now that’s attention to detail. Now that’s care transforming it into wonderful medicine. As a safe and healthier alternative to smoking, hey, we wouldn’t recommend five cups of any coffee, this brew fits seamlessly into the Seattle caffeine culture. And it’s a local product that benefits our community, too. But now I have questions of my own to ask, as I consider reaching for another perfect cup of medicine. Like should I pour that java? Solved. Where’s the creamer?

The warmth, deep in the gut, is immediate. We wouldn’t require that refill after all.

emp, along with Cannabis has been a cornerstone of Native American culture for hundreds of years. It was considered a sacred plant for many reasons, with uses ranging from clothing and sustenance to spiritual ceremonies. In the developing new world, Cannabis played a growing, important role. When the colonies first appeared in North America, hemp was vital to survival. It’s a fact noted by many famous political figures of early America. Their support cleared the way for the Declaration of Independence to be written on hemp paper. You could even pay your taxes with the crop if was profitable enough. “Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere,” wrote George Washington in 1794. So it only makes sense that hemp could become a personal issue for many. In Seattle, meet the founders of S.A.M. Collective, Ferol and Lonnie. “This represents culture

20

coming full circle. It’s going back to the traditional healing of our ancestors,” intoned Ferol, co-owner of the collective. “We’re a Native American-owned family business — my husband [Lonnie] is from the Lakota-Sioux tribe and I’m from the Wintu Nation.” It’s this unique mix of heritage and family foundations that make S.A.M. a great access point for Seattle patients. You get the feeling that they run their collective for the right reasons — it’s personal. Beyond that they’ve also got an enviable location minutes from downtown. A land bridge gives access to both sides of Aurora (it’s on the southbound side). “We’ve worked very hard and dreamed about the chance to help patients. October was our one-year anniversary,” Lonnie said. “It has been a great opportunity to educate and provide for patients in need.” The access point’s staff work hard to treat patients like family. They offer a solid selection of strains,

donations ranging from $8-12. Lavender and a true OG Kush are featured in-house strains. Patients can obtain clones in either strain. On their top shelf, Grape Ape is an outstanding heavy Indica. Its got a pungent, extremely sweet smell and taste. The Blueberry-Northern Lights cross was also of note. The blueberry origins offer another sweet smelling strain and beautiful purple coloring, while the Lights heritage brings a potent high that reaches body and mind. For those preferring medibles,

S.A.M. has a wide selection of inhouse goodies. Their menu includes ginger snaps, cocoa crispies, 3x brownies, turtles and truffles. The potency of the 3x strength brownies is high – and the treat can be split into 3-4 servings for most patients. The homemade butter has very pronounced effects, but manages to balance potency and flavor well. Our photographer enjoyed an offered chocolate chip cookie. When asked if he thought the cookies were working at all, he delayed his response for a few seconds. I’d say

“People call this a miracle. We call it medicine at work” -Ferol, co-owner

These medibles are a tasty way to go when you got a hankering for some THC sugar

they do. The effects of those baked goods help improve the quality of life for patients suffering under chronic ailments, Lonnie said. They also offer topical creams like the Kush Cream OG Kush variety we sampled freely. Our aching elbow pain floated away. The staff ’s holistic approach to taking care of people resonates with people of all age brackets. Their oldest patient, they said, was approaching 81. She visits regularly and is hardly an anomaly among a growing trend of acceptance of Cannabis by older generations. It makes sense, too. When patients rely on expensive, addictive prescription drugs to feel better, Cannabis becomes a far more compelling option for pain management. “This medicine has totally changed my life,” Lonnie said. “I was getting sicker and sicker, until I finally found the true potential of the medicine. Now, I can eat a brownie instead of taking an Ambien or pain pill.” Lonnie experienced extreme pain following a hip replacement. But with the use of medical Cannabis, Lonnie said he has been able to leave discontinue multiple prescriptions. Now, he reaches out to his patients, continuing to teach them of Cannabis’ potential as an alternative medication. “I love helping our patients,” said Maya, the couple’s daughter and frequent budtender. “This feels good. It makes your heart smile to help.

Guide Licking the beaters is optional

Making Butter When it comes to making medibles, there are three main ways to get your food medicated: using canna butter, medicated cooking oil or hash/hash oil infusion directly in a recipe. Of the three, canna butter is by far the easiest for patients to produce and cook with. Use the butter anywhere a recipe calls for it, and you’ll transform an ordinary meal or baked treat into a delicious medible. Happy Cooking!

-1 cup of water -12 unsalted Sticks of real butter (no margarine/spread) -1 oz pure bud, or up to 3 oz. of trimmings ground superfine *Note: potency and amounts listed can be adjusted Adjust to personal preferences and amount of medicine available. Remember to always consume small portions at first of any untested medible, and wait at least a half hour between doses to observe effects. A bit between bites is fine.

First, take the time to unwrap all the butter. Have a bag ready to dump the greasy wrappers. You will want a large cooking pot for stovetop use, or a slow cooker crock pot (preferred) ready. Spray the inside of the pot with a light coat of non-stick cooking spray to keep the butter from sticking then add your water. Set the crockpot/stove to a low/medium heat setting and let the water heat for a couple minutes. Then, add the butter and wait for it to melt. Do not turn the heat up higher to avoid burning or scalding the butter. Start grinding your trim. Any standard coffee maker or handheld grinder will work. Collect the grindings in a large bowl, making sure to tap out the grinder over the mixing bowl to catch all the elements of the trim. Once the butter has reached a liquid state, turn down the heat to its lowest setting. Next, slowly stir in the trim. Keep stirring for the first 10-15 minutes to prevent sticking. Next, the butter needs to simmer for at least 12 hours. The longer you heat the butter the more the medicine will absorb into the butter. This does have a limit however, and anything beyond 36 hours is excessive. Stir the butter every hour, checking to ensure it isn’t sticking, burning, or boiling. When the time is up, let butter cool and strain it several times to remove all leftover residue. You can start with a pasta strainer and move to something with a finer mesh. A cheesecloth can be used to remove any fine particles left over. Your product should have a healthy green color, while very potent butter will be far darker. Cool the butter in plastic or glass containers in the fridge, and wait for the remaining water to separate from the butter. It will be a light layer on the top of the finished butter, and should be scraped and removed. The Finished Product

Sweet Potato Bacon Biscuits

Cran-Apple Sausage Stuffing Melt the butter in a large skillet and saute the onions, celery, leeks, apples, and sausage, breaking up the sausage as you cook. After about 10 minutes, add the poultry seasoning, fresh herbs and dried cranberries. Add the dried stuffing mix and moisten with the vegetable stock. Season stuffing mix with salt and pepper, to taste. (I like the stuffing a little wetter - if you don’t, just add less stock) Place into a buttered casserole dish and bake for 45 minutes.

F. Lightly grease large baking sheet. Set aside. In a bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add butter and work in with pastry blender or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a bowl, whip sweet potatoes with brown sugar until very smooth. Add to flour mixture and mix in lightly but thoroughly with fingers. Add 3/4 cup of buttermilk and the bacon and gently work to make a smooth dough, slightly sticky, being careful not to overwork. Add more liquid as needed 1 teaspoon at a time. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and pat out into a large rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Cut into 10 large biscuits and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until golden brown and risen, 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from oven and serve hot with butter.

Reviewed What Should I Try Now? New book offers up a bud perfect for every occasion

An excellent addition to any patient’s medication station

>>$10, 160 pg. Quicktrading.com

Every patient knows that there are different strains for different pains, but nobody has ever tried to classify strains by the activities they match best with. Until now. Presenting the newest book from the guru himself, Ed Rosenthal. Happy Buds is an all purpose guide to the world of marijuana strains. An excerpt reveals his mission: “Our research team worked night and day testing hundreds of strains. They continued toking until they found the answers to one of life’s mysteries: “What should I smoke now?” Well, apart from wanting to join the research team, I found myself drawn to the details and context for specific strains, and recommendations based off the type of activities one enjoys. With 25 activities outlined, there’s

a bud for “any occasion.” For instance, the “Blues Busting” section of the book includes fitness buds, cloud 9 buds, and even blissful buds. Under fitness, the Apollo 13 Back Cross is featured, described as “an up, happy-yet-purposeful high that invigorates as well as a cup of good coffee.” Sounds like the perfect strain to take with on a run. I also liked the caffeinated buds section, with a recommendation for the White Russian strain. It’s got an expansive smoke with a long lasting and clear high. What better to Wake and Bake with? If a relaxing afternoon sounds better, the book offers up Soma A+. “The indica buzz is relaxing to the body and mind; better as a day-ender than a day-starter, Soma A+ provides medicinal quality cannabis with healing properties for what ails you, whether physical, psychological, or spiritual in nature.” Overall, the book mixes high quality strain pictures with a friendly, knowledgable voice for the reviews. Find Happy Buds at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or direct from Quick Trading at quicktrading.com.

Teriyaki Sauce >>$20, 4 servings, www.dragonsmedibles.com This potent, flavorful teriyaki sauce is a must-have for any patient’s kitchen. The bottle contains enough medicated sauce for four large, boneless chicken breasts — or any other meal of similar size. I made a stir fry in a Wok pan, searing the chicken on high heat before adding the sauce and vegetables on a medium setting. Next, I simmered the ingredients for 10-15 minutes until the chicken was fully cooked. While cooking, try to avoid having the heat high enough to boil the sauce. The sauce is made with a special binder, which keeps the active medicated properties from being vaporized. Still, it’s best not to over cook the sauce. Once cooked, I spread the stir fry over white rice, careful to not spill any of the remaining sauces. The first taste was pure heaven! The sauce is perfectly teriyaki but without any hint of cannabis. About half way through the meal I realized I was breathing deeper, chewing slower, and in an overall medicated foodie bliss. Taken at dinner, this meal alternative is a perfect nightcap for any patient, and healthier than a large brownie or cookie. Professionally packaged with full ingredients listed, we think it’s a smart choice, too. For more information, check out other Dragon items online at www.dragonsmedibles.com!

Cannabis Cinema >> Young filmmakers examine cannabis and hemp policies across Europe in thought-provoking documentary

T

his charming and enlightening documentary follows a young crew of UK filmmakers exploring the history and facts of Cannabis. Released in a special 4/20 edition this past April, the film has gained traction with a primarily Internet audience. It mixes great editing, timely music and powerful interviews to form a compelling and informative piece. The young potrepreneurs managed to create a documentary covering a variety of cannabis issues facing the European Union as well as the rest of the world. Among the interviewees are the former UK

Drugs Policy Advisor, a doctor of neuropsychopharmacology, a patient with multiple sclerosis and the owner of a hydroponics shop. The film begins with the origins of prohibition in America, including the history behind the paper industry and the criminalization of marijuana. It exposes the direct link between Henry Anslinger (creator of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics) and William Randolph Hearst (newspaper magnate slash timber developer). The pair relied on fearbased media and misinformation to outlaw hemp under the guise of “evil marijuana.” Economic greed drove Hearst’s decisions, the film concludes. He

owned major timber holdings, and printed newspapers. Hemp directly threatened his empire because cellulose, the active ingredient of paper, can be found in a variety of sources — but the difference being that trees are just 30 percent cellulose and require heavy chemical processing to develop paper, while hemp stalks are 85 percent and are processed in a carbon neutral way. With worldwide deforestation and global warming issues a reality, why doesn’t hemp make more sense? The film answers that to an extent and covers the industrial uses for hemp. They even discuss using hemp in building structures, like with Hemp Technologies, the

company behind hempcrete. It’s a carbon neutral concrete alternative that can last for hundreds of years while requiring less energy and money to produce, the film notes. The tour through a British hydro store resembles ones I’ve frequented locally, and the head shops profiled are like a high end glass store here. One of my other favorite parts of the film was the interview with the doctor. “I think that marijuana is habit forming,” says the doctor. “But then again, anything nice is habit forming.” Overall, this is a fun, info-packed way to spend 50 minutes. View it for free at blogtopus.tv/wwg and facebook.com/whenwegrow.

The film exposes the direct link between Anslinger & Hearst. Both relied on fear-based misinformation to get hemp outlawed. 32

Growing Story By John K. Photo by Daniel Berman

A happier plant and better buds can be yours with an in-&-out air flow system

W

hen it comes to growing medical Cannabis indoors, air flow and your garden’s “jet stream” are the most important factors in the success and quality of your medicine. In four easy steps, you’ll create a beneficial jet stream in your garden. Correct air flow systems will ensure even CO2 concentrations and properly controlled humidity and temperature. These are the ideal environment to grow thriving, vigorous plants — ones highly resistant to disease and pest infestations. Consider that the air in your grow room comes in two categories. The first is “in air,” any fresh air you may be bringing into your garden, air conditioned air, humidified air, ozonators, heaters, or anything else you are looking to put into your garden through the air. The second is the “out” air. This is all of the exhaust fans, carbon filters, dehumidifiers and anything you are trying to remove from the garden. By building your grow area so all In air devices are on one side and all Out air are on another, the efficiency and balance in your garden increase dramatically. Anytime you are controlling the climate, you must introduce newly treated air on one side and evacuate

around in a consistent direction. In open systems, it starts from the In air side at the bottom, pulls throughout the canopy and leaves the out air side. Does that make sense now? But if your conditions don’t allow for an open system, then you’ll have, well, a closed system. The In air (usually air conditioning) moves towards the Out air (air scrubbing device, dehumidifier). The air will move in two or more paired circular patterns, because of the lack of exhaust. Rinse, reuse, repeat. When creating ground circulation in a closed system, I recommend using the same model fans. But, rather than blowing from one side of the room to the other in one direction do it in two. On the outside of the garden towards the walls, have the fans blowing towards the In air. On the inside towards the center, have the fans blowing away from the In air. In a properly sealed garden, you’ll be creating two circular patterns of air flow. The In air in the center of the garden near the bottom will be pushed towards the Out air in the center of the garden near the top. The Out air is then pushed towards the outside walls of the garden away from the center and the side circulation created by the floor fans pushes the air back to the In air side of the garden on either side wall of the garden. It’s pretty simple. See what a little air care can do?

^ If you want to eliminate unwanted air pockets, as well as help remove the ambient heat from lights, try placing an oscillating fan blowing straight across and above the plant canopy. The leaves of the plants will be lightly moving or shaking at almost all times, so you know it is working. Guessing at growing? Email thegreengardengroup@gmail.com

The Chubbler >> Available at Holy Smoke, Seattle (206) 323-4659 | Wholesale: (206) 387-8621

When we found out about The Chubber, what’s been dubbed the world’s only spill-proof bubbler, we were pretty stoked. After all, who among us hasn’t spilled a bong or other piece? The Chubbler, made locally by Puffin Tuff, looks like an ordinary straight pipe, but inside, contains twin percolators for a smooth water hit. It’s something of a game changer — air pressure keeps that damn H20 from getting all over your bed. It only takes 1-2 ounces of water, but the percolators

40

pack a serious punch. It’s a great alternative to traditional pipes. To prevent any clogging over time, we recommend a product like Resin-X, which stops resin compounds from sticking to the walls of the pipe. The bubbler really delivers an impressively potent medicating experience, one frankly, that rivals those created by far larger pieces. Think you want one? You can find Chubblers at Holy Smoke in Capitol Hill (Seattle neighborhood) and CHCC in Wenatchee.

Health Simpson oil is so potent that a standard dose is only the size of a grain of rice

FIGHTING THE ODDS >> Rick Simpson’s oil is an intensely powerful use of Cannabis — but creating it it was a long, troubled path By Dr. Scott D. Rose, Special Contributor

T

he healing power of super concentrated Cannabis Oil was rediscovered by Rick Simpson, a man from Nova Scotia. Rick witnessed his cousin, a young teen, suffer through a protracted bout of cancer. Ultimately, conventional treatment failed to save his cousin’s life. Two years later as a news report played on the radio, Rick pulled over to listen. He was astonished. The report detailed how medical marijuana reduced brain tumor growth and extended the life of lab mice in a study conducted at the University of Virginia. The news didn’t make the news. Funded by the US National Institutes of Health, the school’s study and findings were reported with laughter and little else.

42

Subsequently, the information was squashed. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration shut down further research into the study and two years later, then-U.S. President Gerald Ford ended Cannabis research in the states all together, Worst of all, Ford then granted exclusive rights to produce THC synthetically to big Pharma, which have produced nada. The information Rick heard on the radio impacted him. He wanted to try medical Cannabis. After suffering from a significant head injury in 1997, in and out of the hospital, toxic from medications, and suicidal – Rick decided Cannabis might be the right medicine for him. A television program outlining the promises of medicinal marijuana reminded

him of the benefits. He asked his doctor for a prescription for medical Cannabis, as allowed under Canadian law. Rick qualified with the conditions he had, but was denied. “Bad for your lungs,” he was told. Undeterred, Rick promptly procured himself some Cannabis. He found it worked better than anything he had tried up to that point. Rick informed his doctor, telling him of ingesting a concentrated Cannabis oil daily rather than smoking.

For tips on using and making Simpson Oil, visit Rick’s website at www.phoenixtears.ca

Simpson Oil Facts 1) Effects set in after 30-90 min. 2) Made using potent Indicas 3) Can be created at home 4) Has helped cure skin cancer >> Rick Simpson exiled in Europe | Photo courtesy Ron Niehouse The doctor agreed it was a superior delivery route, less harmful, certainly, but Rick was denied again. Rick called his method of super concentrating Cannabis oil Phoenix Tears. He found that regular ingestion of the Cannabis oil greatly reduced his pain and improved his quality of life measurably. Rick was able to stop using pharmaceutical medications with regular use of the oil. Blood pressure normalized for Rick as he lost 20 pounds and saw his ability to sleep improved. Heavy Indica strains produce the best oil, Rick found — but the secret to effective medicating is picking strains that work well for your conditions. As it turns out, sativa strains are not as effective in alleviating pain. Rick was cultivating Cannabis and producing his oil for people in his community at no cost. Then the Mounties (RCMP) raided him in 2003 following rumors of his success. They confiscated his materials and oil without charges or arrest. In 2005, Rick voluntarily presented information to the RCMP in support of his treatment. He just wanted to help people, he said. The RCMP raided him again, this time arresting him, taking his oil and plants. Rick has been on the lam ever since, living in Europe with friends, yet he continues to be

a voice for the truth and efficacy of his namesake, his potent medicine. The oil is produced using a heated solvent extraction technique. Solvent residues in the end product are a very real concern. Rick prefers Naphtha, a mixture of a number of different flammable liquid hydrocarbons. Special attention is necessary when working with combustibles. It’s important to have adequate ventilation, zero ignition sources and full volitalization of the solvent. That way the medicine is free of solvent residue. ick goes into detail on the making of the oil on his website. (www. phoenixtears.ca) He also speaks in some depth on the problem of certain companies trying to cash in on his good name. Buyer beware of inferior products. Rick says people should produce their own oil. Solvent residue in the end product must be measured, along with active medical compounds, to ensure the quality of the medicine. The main ways of using the oil are ingestion, vaporizing used topically full strength. Rick has quite a story of curing his own melanoma skin cancer lesions with topical application. Topical application is nothing new, but it is effective. Many cultures worldwide, such as the ancient Hebrews,

R

I can give them hell from here just as easily as I can from over there. But the problem is folks, there’s people back in Canada depending on me to save their lives and give them advice. >> Rick, accepting High Time’s Freedom Fighter Award in 2009 have historical recordings of the beneficial topical uses for Cannabis. Ingestion of Rick Simpson’s oil, rather than smoking, is the most effective method. Ingestable therapies include any Cannabis preparation taken by mouth. The active components must first be heat activated and then extracted into fats, oils or solvents like alcohol before ingesting. Oral Cannabis feels much different than inhaled Cannabis, and is commonly described as a “body high” sensation. Following oral ingestion, effects set in with a delay of 30-90 minutes, reaching a maximum after 2-3 hours and lasting for about 4-12 hours, depending on dose. “Boy, two, with brain cancer is ‘cured’ after secretly being fed medical marijuana by his Father” was the headline in May 2011. A desperate father whose son was suffering from a life-threatening brain tumor revealed to his son’s doctors that he gave him Cannabis oil to ease his pain. And now, the boy has reportedly made a full recovery. The father

credits the Cannabis oil with helping his son get through the chemo, and says the boy has now been declared cancer free by doctors. “We have found that this oil, if properly produced, can replace practically all pharmaceuticals. In a great number of cases, the use of hemp oil will not only control the condition, but cure it,” Rick said. Rick Simpson has developed an oil extract from Cannabis that has offered remarkable results in reversing cancer and greatly diminishing cancerous tumor growth. In addition to reported cancer-curing properties, Simpson’s oil has been successful in treating diabetes, skin and intestinal disorders, among other major medical problems afflicting the world’s population. I believe these facts to be compelling and recommend the use of this preparation as medicine. Rick Simpson’s Oil is a superior medicine capable of shifting the dominant paradigm away from “the smoking of pot” to the use of Cannabis as the important medicine it is.
