CANNABIS 2.0: WASHINGTON STATE CONSIDERS OVERHAUL OF CANNABIS INDUSTRY RULES
legalization
WISCONSIN DEMOCRATS TAKE ANOTHER TRY AT LEGALIZING CANNABIS
12
Almost the entire upper Midwest has either legalized weed or at least medical marijuana, but Wisconsin sticks out like a sore thumb. The state will be an “island of prohibition very soon,” said Rep. Melissa Sargent (D-Madison). Rep. Sargent is trying to change that by writing four bills which would legalize Cannabis for medical and recreational purposes, reports Madison.com. “Prohibition hasn’t worked for farmers who are unable to tap into a multi-billion dollar industry, nor for those sitting in prison for nonviolent pot-related charges,” Sargent said. “Plain and simple, I think the most dangerous thing about Cannabis in Wisconsin is that it is illegal,” Rep. Sargent said.

WHY THE EVERGREEN STATE HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY WEED THEFTS
An expensive series of Cannabis thefts have been occurring in Washington State, and growers aren’t just unhappy with the thieves themselves - they are also pointing fingers at the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB). The agency is tasked with overseeing the state’s recreational Cannabis program, and some growers who’ve lost their market-ready crops to thieves say the LCB has been far too free in sharing insider information about the growers. Washington has strict reporting requirements for Cannabis industry participants, with an emphasis on growers. Growers, however, understandably want (and, due to ripoffs, actually need) to keep a low profile. When it becomes public knowledge that you are growing hundreds of marijuana plants worth thousands of dollars, bad things can and do happen. But the LCB requires grow sites to submit their addresses, along with extensive other data. Growers are required to provide much more information to the state than other businesses, including exactly how many plants they grow and harvest and how much inventory is on hand. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to view such data from a ripoff point of view. After all, if you can determine a particular grow site - with an address - has a crop ready for harvest, that is information upon which thieves are certainly happy to act. That’s probably a big reason why licensed Cannabis growers, especially smaller craft growers, are being hit so often. And unfortunately, crop thefts don’t seem to be a particularly high priority among law enforcement. While many growers are filing police reports, The Stranger reports that “no arrests have been made in any of the cases.”
ocT. 2019
Seven years after Washington state voters legalized recreational Cannabis, and five years after the state launched its retail market, officials are looking at overhauling rules for the industry. Plans call for boosting minority ownership of marijuana businesses, allowing home deliveries, and letting the smallest growers increase the size of their operations, reports Q13 FOX. Rick Garza, director of the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board, along with members of the LCB, are calling it “Cannabis 2.0.” According to Garza, the agency has “been so challenged with the issues of the day, we haven’t been looking out long-term to determine what the future looks like.” The board is considering abandoning the state’s unwieldy seed-to-sale Cannabis tracking program, which has repeatedly succumbed to software issues, sometimes causing retail operations thousands of dollars. Under a proposed new system, businesses would report The board is considering their transactions to the LCB and then be audited. abandoning the state’s unwieldy Another proposal examines whether to allow seed-to-sale Cannabis tracking Cannabis to be exported out of state, as Oregon program, which has repeatedly lawmakers did this year, in the event the federal succumbed to software issues, government approves it. sometimes causing retail The board has proposed two new bills for the operations thousands of dollars. next session of the Washington Legislature in January 2020. The first would create a social equity program to encourage greater ownership of Cannabis businesses by minorities, women, and military veterans. Washington currently isn’t issuing any more Cannabis retail licenses, but 11 of the 500+ retail license holders have surrendered their licenses, according to Garza. Under the LCB proposal, these could be reissued to minority participants, or new licenses could be granted if cities or counties agree to increase the number of pot shops they’ll allow. Businesses would be eligible if they are owed by a woman, minority or veteran, or if a majority of its ownership group are a protected class under Washington state anti-discrimination laws. Another proposal would allow Tier 1 producers, currently limited to 2,000 square feet, to sell medicinal Cannabis directly to the state’s 36,000 registered medical marijuana patients. Patients often have a difficult time finding Cannabis free of pesticides and heavy metals in retail stores. Tier 1 growers could sell to patients onsite under the proposal, with other growers at farmers market style locations, or by delivery, according to Garza. Tier 1 growers could also expand to 5,000 square feet under the proposal, then possibly to 8,000 square feet. Many of the smallest growers are struggling because of their legally limited size.

MARYLAND CULTIVATORS DRAMATICALLY ADDING CANNABIS PRODUCTION CAPACITY Maryland’s medical marijuana industry is dramatically expanding, with cultivators across the state adding major capacity to meet the demands of patients flooding the market, and to potentially supply a recreational Cannabis market in the future. Industry analysts had estimated Maryland’s marijuana market would gross $60 million in sales by its third year. But by the end of 2017, their very first year, gross sales surpassed $96 million. And that’s before edible products had even been allowed by lawmakers (now they are). Three new growers are entering the market alongside 15 businesses that got the initial cultivation licenses three years ago. Regulators are expected to approve another four growing licenses, bringing the total to 22 growers in the state. Maryland’s successful and stable medical marijuana industry could buttress arguments that the state is ready to embrace recreational legalization, according to some observers. Brian Lopez, chairman of the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, said he believes growers are adding capacity in anticipation of “adult use coming.” Regulators note there’s still plenty of room for growth in Maryland’s medical Cannabis market, with 82 dispensaries opening across the state in less than two years. TANNINS & TERPENES OUR ANNUAL SPECIAL ISSUE PAIRING CANNABIS AND ALCOHOL CAME TO LIFE FOR A FUN AND DELICIOUS EVENT LAST MONTH
ASK ANYONE WHO KNOWS THEIR WAY AROUND A SPICE RACK AND THEY’LL TELL YOU THAT WHAT SEPARATES THE PROS FROM THE CONS IN THE WORLD OF CULINARY ARTS IS FLAVOR. AND HAVING THE DELICATE EXPERTISE TO COMBINE THE PERFECT INGREDIENTS FOR A DISTINCT MEAL IS A CRAFT NOT ANY CHEF CAN CONSISTENTLY PULL OFF. THEN, IF YOU ADD THE RIGHT VINTAGE OF WINE, YOU MAY HAVE A MEAL THAT NEVER LEAVES YOUR MEMORY FOR TASTE. Northwest Leaf, however, isn’t a restaurant - we’re a Cannabis publication. So, we take a similar
concept of pairing and turn it on its side twice a year for our special Tannins & Terpenes affair, held at a swank recording studio/event space in SODO called MOB Studios. With special terps provided by quality acts like House of Cultivar, Avitas and Doghouse, the highly nuanced mocktails were a lovely treat for anyone looking for a departure from the old liquor clichés. The three levels of MOB Studios were well positioned with a DJ spinning all vinyl afro-beats and electric jazz music, while Erudite & Stone curated the subtle tastes. Also laced within the venue were surefire ways to get your THC levels up, with the old school hash bar provided by the seasoned vets at Sitka. You could also get some juicy dabs from Dank Czar and Golden Grams,
and top shelf flower from our good friends at Pioneer Nuggets (see for yourself in our strain of the month). And you wouldn’t find just nugs, as there was no denying the smiling faces from Jim and Olivia Hart from Cascade Kropz in Arlington, bestowing all the free hugs. And Nana’s Sodas were well represented by Nana herself. Special thanks to Emerald Haze in Renton for being a part of the elegance, too! Yes, Tannins & Terpenes is all about flavor to savor, but not too much, and definitely not too little. At the end of the evening, it was Gab Lemons from Have A Heart who said it best, “I don’t drink alcohol, so this is the closest thing I can get to a real bar!”

SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO BONNIE@C3.LEGAL consumption of Cannabis. T-shirts, hats, hemp seeds, oils, lotions and foods are all examples of items you cannot sell in your store. However, products related to smoking such as hemp rolling papers, hemp bud containers, or hemp twine for lighting Cannabis are permitted to be sold in retail Cannabis stores.
On Trademarking CBD Products
It is true that you cannot obtain a trademark on a federally illegal product such as Cannabis. To obtain a trademark you have to choose a classification under which you register your trademark. Since there is no classification of Cannabis, many Cannabis companies obtain a trademark under other classifications, such as clothing and apparel, glass products, paraphernalia, etc. But some companies run the risk of a similar trademark already registered for that classification, making it difficult for Cannabis companies to ultimately obtain their trademark. Hemp was legalized in 2018 at the federal level through the Hemp Farming Act. This opens up an entirely new avenue for Cannabis companies to obtain their mark. There is a classification for agricultural products, which is likely the best fit for a hemp trademark. I think obtaining a trademark for CBD and hemp products is a great idea. It’s a closer fit to Cannabis than clothing and apparel, glass products, or other tangential classifications. Additionally, when Cannabis is federally legalized, it may provide some protection of your mark as an agricultural product.

HIS HAS BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR HEMP. With the Hemp Farming Act of 2018’s passage in December 2018, hemp and CBD have become mainstream and indeed, trendy. Now more than ever before hemp is working into the lives of people across all demographics. Men, women, nonbinary individuals, seniors, young adults, and everyone in between are now discovering the benefits of CBD and hemp products. CVS pharmacy is even widely touting its Full Spectrum Hemp Oil, advertising that it’s more than just CBD on its large billboards. Yes, hemp has become federally legalized and everyone’s getting on board. I’ve had a lot of questions about CBD and hemp, so for this issue I wanted to look back at the questions this year. . .
On Selling Hemp Products In Retail Stores
As a Cannabis retailer, you are limited in what hemp products you can sell as a retail Cannabis licensee. Your Cannabis license only permits you to sell Cannabis or paraphernalia under WAC 314-55-079(1). “Paraphernalia” means items used for the storage or use of usable marijuana, marijuana concentrates, or marijuana-infused products, such as, but not limited to, lighters, roach clips, pipes, rolling papers, bongs, and storage containers. Items for growing, cultivating, and processing marijuana, such as, but not limited to, butane, lights, and chemicals are not considered “paraphernalia.” This means that you cannot sell hemp items that are not used for the

Smoking lounges, or consumption lounges, are not permitted in Washington. In fact, it is a class C felony to operate a Cannabis club where the direct or indirect purpose is to hold, store, or consume Cannabis under RCW 69.50.465. Since it is illegal to smoke in public and it is also unlawful to smoke inside under the Clean Indoor Air Act, Cannabis consumers are placed in a difficult position when deciding where to smoke. While this is the law as it currently stands, I hope one day this law is changed so Cannabis consumers can enjoy their Cannabis in consumption lounges. I strongly believe one day Washington will get there. Until we do, I keep wondering how we can move our state in the direction of accepting consumption lounges. CBD consumption lounges are an ideal legal way for products to be consumed out of public view, as CBD products have recently become extremely popular in mainstream culture. CBD consumption I recently waited for two hours for a CBD cocktail in Los Angeles. I went to a CBD coffee shop in Texas. lounges are an ideal legal way CBD products have crept their way into the lives of for products to the general public and earned a reputation of not be consumed out of public view, only being socially acceptable, but in fact, healthy. as CBD products So why has the Cannabis industry not hopped on have recently board with CBD consumption lounges? Lounges become extremely could have an outdoor area where patrons could popular in mainstream smoke their CBD flower, so long as it is 25 feet from any entrance. CBD lounges could have a dab station culture. where patrons could dab CBD shatter or crumble. Lounges could offer CBD coffees, teas, waters, smoothies, and countless other beverages. Pastries and snacks could be infused with CBD and other CBD food products could be sold at the register. CBD flower, CBD shatter, CBD crumble and other oils could be sold at these lounges. Beer and wine could even be sold at these lounges, and maybe even cocktails if a liquor license is obtained. CBD lounges could be Washington’s path toward normalizing consumption lounges. While the law currently does not permit Cannabis smoking lounges, CBD lounges would be a completely legal way for Cannabis lovers to get together and consume CBD products in a social atmosphere. And when Washington finally lifts its ban on Cannabis consumption lounges, CBD lounges would have already established their branding as Cannabis cafes. After the Farm Bill was signed into law last December, industrial hemp has catapulted into farmers’ fields and into mainstream conversations all over the country. Hemp is legal at the federal level, and hemp and CBD are popping up everywhere you look. How big is hemp in 2019? VoteHemp reports over 17,000 licensed hemp farmers will grow at least a quarter million acres, the bulk of which is destined for CBD extraction. While many Cannabis farmers have switched to hemp, most of this year’s hemp farmers are new to the plant. Many have never even seen a pot plant, let alone grown acres of it. AND IT’S NOT JUST FARMERS that have jumped on the bandwagon. CBD products - good, bad and other - are available in stores and online. Many have found relief from hemp products and are quick to tell friends, family and anyone else who’ll listen. To their surprise and delight ordinary folks, non-pot smokers, are turning to hemp instead of prescription drugs. You can’t tell them hemp is bad, and by association, many are reconsidering Cannabis as well. Once again, hemp is the ice breaker for much larger discussions about total legalization, amnesty for non-violent marijuana prisoners, and access to Cannabis as well as hemp. All of this is astonishing because seven years ago, when Washington and Colorado legalized recreational Cannabis, it was a huge deal. We’re talking walk-in dispensaries for adults over 21, nonresidents included and all without a doctor’s authorization, unlike medical marijuana. Fast forward to 2019, and 11 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational Cannabis, THE GOOD NEWS IS and hemp is no longer THAT MORE PEOPLE WILL Schedule 1 (the DEA) but GROW HEMP FOR FOOD Schedule 5 (the FDA). How far we’ve come. AND FIBER IN 2021 But when we look a little closer not everything is coming up roses. I’m the last person to put a pin in the balloon, but the hemp market is far from mature.
OCT. 2019
In fact, the same loose rules and regulations that allow anyone to jump into the hemp business have sown the seeds of chaotic changes yet to come. Far too many people have jumped into the hemp game with dreams of getting rich. Yes, those that started first made good money. But their success attracted new entrants. The pioneers came from Cannabis, whereas the newbies have a steep learning curve. Making mistakes and losing money are part of the risk. A huge 2019 hemp harvest will bump up against last year’s crop, much of which is still unsold. This is true for plant material (biomass) as well as distillate and isolate. As popular as hemp is, so far the supply of ingredients is greater than the products being sold. When supply is greater than demand the prices go down. Those farmers who penciled in $50 a pound for biomass based on last year’s prices may find prices closer to $15-20 a pound this year. Many new farmers bought “questionable” seeds - regular not feminized, low germination rate, prone to go over the legal limit of 0.3% delta-9-THC, etc. I predict a flood of biomass this year of wildly uneven quality and variable prices to match. The good news is that more people will grow hemp for food and fiber in 2021. Fiber will break out first because growing it is easier, and while the processing infrastructure doesn’t exist now, it’s cheaper to build than a food ecosystem. Those that take a long view on the future and potential of industrial hemp are those that will finish the race. 2018 may have been the year The Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 (a.k.a. The Farm Bill) was signed, but looking back we’ll all agree that 2019 was The Year of Hemp. There’s no turning back the clock or putting the tractor back in the barn. Yep, we’ve turned the corner on hemp.

ABIGAIL AND NOEMY CUEVAS, better known as The Hemp Twins, believe in a future of sustainable plastics, textiles and shelter. background on The Big House, we sat down to talk more about the importance of the work the twins are doing. As Abigail explained, “It is important to destigmatize the Cannabis plant and distinguish the difference between marijuana and hemp, and educate misinformed people.” As first generation Mexican-Americans, the twins know firsthand that not all cultures are as tolerant of Cannabis, or even hemp, as others. Abigail explained to me how their ancestors in Mexico used the plant in alcohol-based tinctures, but once you burned it, smoked it or rolled it up, you were considered a criminal. Overall, most of their family supports the endeavors of The Hemp Twins, but they mention that their mother still sometimes questions if it is necessary for the twins to work with Cannabis. Ironically, their mother knits with hemp yarn. Noemy was the first of the two to use Cannabis, medicinally and recreationally. Although they have never smoked in front of their parents, they have always tried to educate their mother, especially about the benefits of topicals. After many educational trips to conferences and hemp educational workshops, the twins’ mother finally began to let her guard down to support her daughters. She was actually their first investor for the club, providing her daughters with extra tamales from her cart to sell and make

These twin sisters are both enrolled at Los Angeles Trade-Tech & Community College in the school of Architecture Technology. Born and raised in Los Angeles, the Cuevas sisters plan to use their education to build a bridge between the local community and the industrial hemp industry. In February of 2018, the Industrial Hemp Alliance was born after nearly a year of preparation by the Cuevas twins. The club is organized through the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and is working rapidly toward becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with the help of their mentors at Conexion. When I arrived at their workspace in The Big House, a historical building in South Central Los Angeles, I was blown away. Abigail and Noemy put together their entire usual hemp presentation just for our interview and photoshoot. I had the privilege of watching a demonstration of the durability of hempcrete, made during one of their very own hempcrete workshops. I also learned that hemp fibers can be used as an alternative insulation to fiberglass, which can be hazardous and in some cases, toxic. After learning about hemp and getting the historical and current
for profit and funding. The day she dropped the tamales off was the first time their mother had witnessed her daughters educating their fellow classmates on campus about hemp. Abigail further explained her complicated relationship with Cannabis to me, reminiscing about school days where her mom would drop her off wearing a D.A.R.E. shirt. She was originally against Cannabis, especially growing up going to a strict charter school, but Abigail began to experience complications with her health and her heart. Noemy tried to convince her sister to use Cannabis as medicine, but Abigail rejected it many times and tried other methods before trying Cannabis. It wasn’t until a doctor told her to smoke weed that she was willing to give it a try. Now she uses Cannabis to help slow down her heart rate, as well as slow down the rate of growth of her vitiligo. Meanwhile, Abigail and Noemy are actively seeking investment and mentorship support while they embark on a completely new endeavor: retail Cannabis. Growing up in Los Angeles seems glamorous, but certain areas of the city have historically been targeted more than others in the War on Drugs. Each state has its own cities with similar stories, but the City of Los Angeles is taking baby steps to repair the damage caused to its citizens with social equity programs for the regulated Cannabis industry. The city is working on a tiered system to provide those with Cannabis convictions the assistance they need to benefit from the now legal Cannabis industry, such as priority application processing and business support. Now the twins are taking their own shot at retail Cannabis, qualifying for multiple tiers of the program. I’M A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE EFFECTS THAT A GOOD ATTITUDE HAS ON HEALING, ESPECIALLY FOR MENTAL HEALTH. HERE WE FIND ALYSSA, A CANNABIS AND CBD ADVOCATE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, A SELFPROCLAIMED “NEIGHBORHOOD HOPE DEALER” - WHICH IS EXACTLY THE MEDICINE NEEDED IN THIS WORLD. Alyssa has battled some issues of her own and has used Cannabis to self medicate for anxiety and depression. It’s one thing to take control of your mental health and learn what it takes to heal yourself, but it’s another thing entirely to then use your experiences to advocate for mental health in such a public way, which is what Alyssa is doing online. She uses her message to help uplift and encourage others, no matter what it is they’re going through. Alyssa’s journey with Cannabis began ten years ago when she was introduced by her fellow student athletes. The plant intrigued her, and she was fascinated by how it affected her. “Now as an adult I consume Cannabis a lot more consciously, and don’t abuse it as I would say I did in the past. In college, I almost got kicked off the basketball team when my coach became aware of my use. Now my relationship with Cannabis is holistic and my natural way of medicating for various ailments like anxiety, depression and chronic pain.” CANNABIS AS TREATMENT “I medicate all day, every day, but the difference now is I do it with intention and purpose - where before I would smoke just to get high. I typically start the day taking a dropper of a full spectrum CBD tincture. This helps kick start my day and rid myself of any anxiety and jitters I may have woken up with. Then throughout the day I will take a few rips from my bong, and take a few dabs from my rig. Smoking throughout the day really

As she further explained, “One promise I made myself in this lifetime is that I would stay away from pills. One way I’ve done that is by tuning into my self and my vessel, and understanding what it is I am feeling and growing through. Once I had an understanding of who I was, and what I feel and go through, I knew Cannabis was the way I wanted to combat my symptoms. With experience and research I have found what works best for me and what doesn’t benefit me.” So, what works for Alyssa? She enjoys primarily relaxing cultivars that slow down her mind and alleviate the pain in her body. One of her favorites is Lemon Larry OG (OG Kush x SFV OG). “It has a very clean, piney aroma that allows you to feel relaxed, but you can still get stuff done and feel happy,” she explained. “Two of my favorite terpene profiles found in this flower are caryophyllene and limonene. Primarily because of how fascinating it is to me. If you look at the human body like a biological machine it is extremely complex and ornate. I’ve really been enjoying Sub-X as of late. They maintain extreme high quality, really good terpene retention and very good handling. Though it only has about 12-16% THC, it is going to get you more deeply affected than anything else we carry at The Reef that’s from 28-30%. For things that are easier to use and more approachable since we’re something of a tourist destination here - I recommend a full spectrum CO2 vape cartridge. This has a lot of rare cannabinoids and terpenes, like WAM Oil, that will give you a happy, bouncy high. The entourage effect is more

MORGAN KRISTINE
CEO & FOUNDER HIGH SOCIETY HAIRCARE oct. 2019
MORGAN KRISTINE is the founder of High Society Haircare, a hemp based CBD company working to integrate plant based medicine into a new arena of skin and hair products. She began working with medical Cannabis in 2009, and has become a well-known Cannabis advocate over the last decade. From acting as President of the Marijuana Business Association to founding the Cannabis Women’s Alliance, Kristine has played a major role in the Pacific Northwest Cannabis movement. As our Hemp Issue Stoner Owner, we talked about CBD, Cannabis, and why we can all use a little plant medicine in our haircare products. HOW DID CANNABIS COME INTO YOUR LIFE? I believe my biggest introduction was in 2009, as an international account executive when the market fell out - so I became a medical Cannabis grower. I started working in the medical industry and I was servicing dispensaries like the CPC and NWPRC, and using my master bedroom, den and bathroom to grow. I learned how to grow medical Cannabis over that time. Eventually David Rheins started the Marijuana Business Association (MJBA) and I became the president of that, which led into the Cannabis Women’s Alliance, where we supported women in the industry by hosting women’s events, workshops, seminars, and charitable events for women in the Cannabis industry. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START HIGH SOCIETY HAIRCARE? I’m a big fan of Cannabis Basics, and I was walking with the owner, Ah Warner, and Danica Noble of NORML Women - they’re always my inspiration. And my boyfriend is my hairdresser, and over a new ideas conversation, I decided I as going to launch my own haircare product with CBD! HOW CAN HEMP AND CBD HELP IN SKIN AND BODY PRODUCTS? To formulate our line, we met with a manufacturer using natural formulas for haircare, and we found a source that has CBD grown here in the US. We know CBD is antifungal and antimicrobial, so we asked, ‘What can it do for our scalp and hair?’ We’re still finding out all the ways it can help and are learning as we use it. We had the CBD isolate sent directly to the manufacturer, and added it to an already incredible formula that passes the Whole Foods standards for body care. We are still at the beginning and we need more people to try it and tell us what it helps with, because we can’t tell people directly what CBD can do because of federal regulations.
“IF WE COULD GET OUR HEADS AROUND THE CRIMINALIZATION AND THE WHOLE STIGMA OF HEMP, CANNABIS AND CBD, WE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS GOING TO SAVE THE PLANET - AND COULD SAVE OUR LIVES AND HEALTH.”
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A HEMP BUSINESS OWNER THAT CONSUMES CANNABIS AND USES THE PLANT? Hemp is the future! If we could get our heads around the criminalization and the whole stigma of hemp, Cannabis and CBD, we would understand that this is going to save the planet - and could save our lives and health. That’s the goal, the big picture. I feel like I have a better connection with that because I use the plant in my life. I wish that we could use the full plant in our products, but because we travel across state lines in places like Texas, they’re still too nervous about THC or full spectrum hemp concentrates. So this is the place to start for us. And this is just the beginning, although the future product lines will include full plant medicine and eventually extracted THC. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AND FAVORITE PART OF OWNING A LEGAL HEMP BUSINESS? The biggest challenge is liability insurance. It’s outrageous and more expensive than any regular product line. My favorite part is working with the beautiful Michael Guttsen (GutsandGloryCreative.com), through his packaging design and branding. In addition, for the health benefits of the plant to have a product that looks beautiful and looks good in showing up on a shelf - that is half the fun.
YOU ALSO HAVE NEW PRODUCTS COMING OUT, TELL US ABOUT THEM! In addition to the shampoo and conditioner, we have a line of products in production including foaming scalp detox, beard shampoos and conditioners, and even our Roached line of wipes for personal care. These are all in pre-production for next year, including our full men’s line! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE OF HIGH SOCIETY HAIRCARE AND FOR THE HEMP INDUSTRY IN GENERAL? Our goals are to be on mainstream shelves like Bartell Drugs and Metropolitan Market by next year, and we are already in discussions with big retailers. Overall, we would like to see hemp everywhere - in fuel, food, industry and healthcare. I would love to see more plants sucking up the pollution and healing the planet!
@ HIGH_SOCIETY_HAIRCARE H IG H S OC I E T Y HAI RCAR E . CO M
A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Look for the Stoner Owner stamp when purchasing fine Cannabis, and let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

AMBIENCE When it came time to develop the look of the stores, it’s immediately obvious that the purveyors of this particularly elegant establishment spared no expense. And the other Gallery shops closely follow suit. In this location on Canyon Road, the walls are covered in art handpicked from co-owner Ted Weatherby’s personal collection. Among these pieces are works by an artist who has work hanging on the walls in a very white house on Pennsylvania Avenue in the District of Columbia. Yes folks, that White House. And over the well displayed stock of products hang television monitors that display beautiful images of everyone’s favorite flower.
“THE WALLS ARE COVERED IN ART HANDPICKED FROM CO-OWNER TED WEATHERBY’S PERSONAL COLLECTION. AMONG THESE PIECES ARE WORKS BY AN ARTIST WHO HAS WORK HANGING ON THE WALLS IN A VERY WHITE HOUSE ON PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.”
PRODUCT SELECTION If you aim to succeed in the crowded Cannabis retail space, you definitely have to have the right person curating your stock. Donnie Gagldari is exactly that expert due to his respected background that reaches well into the old days of the medical game. While offering a wide selection of items that will suit your fancy, the key for this establishment is focusing on having the right products that won’t disappoint and providing them in a very professional manner. Not every shop displays the same ethics, but with these folks - the proof is in the products.
HISTORY & VALUES The Gallery has a successful five-year-old shop and more on the way because they are the best at what they do. Ted’s partner, Mike Henry, believes that the most effective way to create a cheery, positive atmosphere is to afford opportunities to those that are loyal by promoting from within. The company motto ‘Reach Higher, Achieve Your Goals’ is one that is expressed in photos of the staff hiking and getting out of work to have fun and enjoy their family vibe. These values are not lost on you when you leave the store with a huge smile and a bag full of yummy Cannabis products that you can trust.

BUDTENDERS & SPECIALS Due to their location in McChord AFB, The Gallery continues to show their respect for those in uniform by offering ‘Military Mondays’ with 15% off all products. Topical Tuesdays follow with a 10% discount, Hungry Hump Day, and vendor days Thursdays and Fridays. With The Gallery, class is the name of the game. The good-natured budtenders emanate warmth and guide returning customers through the many goodies inside their glass countertops.
QUICK HIT For those of you in the south Tacoma/Puyallup area searching for a high-end Cannabis buying experience, look no further than The Gallery. With four successful stores and one more on the way, the reason for their success is obvious. They have differentiated themselves from the competition by leaning heavily on aesthetics and presentation. The Gallery knows that when it comes to getting the most bang for your buck it isn’t just about paying fair prices - it’s about leaving feeling spoiled.

nown for its role in the counterculture movement as one of the first named strains of Cannabis, Acapulco Gold became synonymous with quality weed in the 70s. Originally found in Mexico, Acapulco Gold is known for a classic golden color and sticky buds that ooze with flavor. Considered the first connoisseur grade Cannabis that is known the world around, we found the modern cut from Pioneer Nuggets to be worthy of the legendary buzz. Opening a jar unveils an unmistakably sweet and earthy, bright citrus cream. Next up, you’re met with a sour woodsy skunky finish that lingers in the air as buds are broken up for smoking, leaving fingers sticky and a bowl ready to be burned. The beautifully manicured buds are golden-green with purple tinged tips that are coated in visible trichomes, glistening like shiny THC diamonds. Lighting up the flower delivers a kiss of sweet golden citrus smoke that slips into the lungs with zero expansion and a warming exhale of tingly, earthy herb. Burning with a clean ash and an exquisite smoke, it’s easy to take big tokes of this uplifting sativa. Effects start with crackles of stoney electricity in the mind, awakening the senses with a giggly, lightheaded euphoria that levels out into an uplifting buzz, lasting for several hours. Perfect for morning wake and bakes, or to end the day with a happy sativa high, Acapulco Gold is a delicious treat as relevant today as it was 60 years ago. Pioneer Nuggets is located in Arlington and has been growing recreational Cannabis since 2013. Their dedication to phenotype hunting and hands-on, all natural growing techniques is readily apparent in their delicious strains. Ask for the Acapulco Gold at your favorite dispensary, and give their Pink Lemonade a try too!

CBD PRODUCT I was immediately impressed (and suspicious) of the opulent packaging. In my experience, the best product packaging is often a cover-up for a shit product. Lipstick on a pig if you will. But, I am a huge advocate for Cannabis skincare and I was curious to see how well this product performed. The feel of the serum is silky and absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving you with a clean glow. SJ’s contains active ingredients like sea buckthorn, calendula, CBD and rosehip boost radiance, while pomegranate and helichrysum deliver rich antioxidants. My skin was left feeling supple without becoming greasy. Nevertheless, I am a fan of this product, but the only downfall I could find is that it’s cost-prohibitive at a whopping $125 for one ounce of “luxury” CBD. -SIMONE FISCHER

This product has wonderful applications in targeting chronic acne and recurring dermatitis. -WYATT EARLY
As a skincare fiend, I am obsessed with Cannabis beauty products. The New Day Night Cream boasts 200 mg of CBD in every jar, and although I’m not a huge fan of the bland packaging and plastic container, I do love the consistency of this product. It’s thick and luxuriously creamy - making it the perfect candidate for night creams. As the season moves into fall and winter, my skin dries up faster in the cold than in the heat of the summer. After cleansing, I applied the cream (which feels more like a moisturizing mask), leaving my skin feeling like velvet. The next morning was hectic and I had to skip my skin regimen, but the product worked so well, I didn’t need to moisturize the next day. In my experience, it gave me 24-hour moisture, which I loved. The smell is mild and nearly unnoticeable, and the CBD helped reduce inflammation stemming from a hormonal breakout. -SIMONE FISCHER

As a big fan of nighttime teas, I was really excited to see a tea with some similar ingredients to the ones I already drink. Everything in the tea mixture is organic, including ingredients like valerian root, which is known for helping with sleep. Silver Mountain Hemp Guitars MORRIS BEEGLE BELIEVES ROCK ‘N’ ROLL CAN SAVE THE WORLD, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT ROCK ‘N’ ROLL IS MADE FROM HEMP. THAT’S WHY HE STARTED SILVER MOUNTAIN HEMP GUITARS, A COMPANY THAT SPECIALIZES IN HEMP-CRAFTED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT. Based in Fort Collins, Colo., Silver Mountain creates special order guitars and ukuleles, along with guitar speaker cabinets, guitar picks, straps and volume knobs, all either partially or completely made from hemp fiber. For Beegle, the musical instrument company is a way to merge his past with his present and build a new future. After a long career on the distribution side of the music industry, Beegle entered the hemp industry when Cannabis legalization appeared on the horizon in Colorado. “Everyone has a different entry point to this plant,” he said. “A lot of it is through the medical side or the recreational side, and a lot of people have gone to jail for this plant, when they shouldn’t.” Though he didn’t jump into the industry until until 2012, Beegle’s path to Cannabis sativa began back in the 1990s, the same way it started for so many people - when he read “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” by Jack Herer. “It’s been a huge part of human history, with building materials, and clothes, and rope,” Beegle said. “It’s been a part of society for a long time, and a lot of that information had been buried and hidden away by the government. The Jack Herer book opened up a lot about this plant, and what it can do.” For Beegle, the hemp plant can
47 do quite a bit. He’s currently building a number of companies in the hemp space, including the Colorado Hemp Company and NoCo Hemp Expo, along with Silver Mountain. Replacing modern conventional materials with hemp isn’t just a business move for him - it’s a call to action coming directly from the environment. “The industrial revolution introduced us to the world of synthetics, and now, over a hundred years later, we’re realizing what these synthetics are doing to the rivers we fish in, and our soils,” he said. “There’s toxic shit everywhere. You can walk along the beaches and see these micro-plastics everywhere. And the fish are eating that, and we’re eating the fish.” The way Beegle sees it, the future of manufacturing will rely on bio-plastics from hempcorn composites rather than the petroleum-based plastics humans have been using for decades. That’s not just one possible future, either. He says it’s the only possible future. “We’re here for a finite period of time, and our species is destroying the home that we’ve been given,” Beegle said. “We’re fortunate to be here, and we’re destroying it. We’re shitting where we sleep, and instead we should be better stewards of the Earth.” Making hemp-composite electric guitars and ukuleles alone may not spark the revolution, but for Beegle, SIlver Mountain is just one piece of a larger mission to replace everything possible
with hemp and other renewable, sustainable resources. “The guitar thing is more of a novelty than anything,” he said. “But you can make pretty much anything out of hemp, and that’s something that we should take seriously as we move forward with society.” Beegle’s guitars could become more of a novelty, and they’re certainly continuing the conversation. He has a waiting list for his made-to-order guitars and ukuleles, which use U.S. grown hemp. His guitar speaker cabinets, picks, guitar straps, and volume knobs are all readily available. “It’s still small and boutique, but we’re dialing in the supply chain, which has been work,” he said. Once everything is dialed-in, he plans to carry actual inventory of guitars and ukuleles and fill orders immediately as they come. For now, his company currently offers pre-orders on electric guitars in an SG-style, Telecaster style and Les Paul Jr. body style, with a Stratocaster-body style on the way. Prices range from $2000-$3000. Ukuleles range from $200-$225, and speaker cabinets range from $1000-$2250. Think about it - a guitar player could pick up one of his guitars, a strap, some picks, and one of his speaker cabinets paired with ToneTubby Hemp Cone and Cannabis Rex speakers. That’s probably as close as anyone has ever gotten to an all-hemp rig. “With climate change, and all of this, I don’t think our species is going to be around much longer,” he said. “I think that we need to make a change.”

DAVID SLOAN is co-owner of Herbs House in Ballard, a heritage medical Cannabis dispensary that transitioned into the recreational market.
Outside of managing a Cannabis shop with a passion for quality products and information, he’s an avid hemp advocate who has decided to share his beliefs in action, building a hempcrete building behind his West Seattle house. Part of an ongoing project and learning experience with hemp, Sloan hopes to share his story to encourage others to incorporate hemp into their life - and lifestyle.

H OW DI D H E M P A N D C A N N A B I S CO M E I N TO YOU R L I F E ?
Cannabis started when I was 12. Basically, I had met buddies that were smoking pot and I hung out with kids that were one or two classes ahead of me - they got into pot and I got into pot. I didn’t really get into hemp until college, around 1990 is when I started learning about it. H OW DI D T H E H E M P I S SU E O F H I G H T I M E S M AG A Z I N E I N F L U E N C E YOU ?
The issue was very detailed on everything hemp talking about old production of breaking up the hemp into hurds and using it for creating materials - and it started letting me know about the different properties of hemp. From my perspective, the hemp plant is what’s going to save the world, our planet. I would also say the Hash Bash at the University of Michigan had a big influence on me, with people talking about hemp and Cannabis and handing out flyers. I just started reading about it! Once I understood how it could be used in our everyday life and make improvements in our world, I couldn’t stop. WH AT I N S P I R E D YOU TO S TA RT T H I S P R O J EC T I N YOU R BAC K YA R D ?
When I bought my property there was a 14x10 shed in the back that was built in the 1940s like my house. What I learned was that it was a shack used as a means to cook food during the summer, and sleep out there if they wanted to cook. The thing started dilapidating and falling into the earth, so I knew I wanted to replace it. As I got my survey done and property plans mapped out, the project sat for three years and did nothing. I tried to hire people to come out and build, and they told me to do shipping containers or prefabricated sheds, or they wouldn’t be willing to build because of how the ground was situated. After going through all the hassle I said, ‘Fuck it, I need to do it,’ and I contacted a buddy in Wyoming to help dig the land, pour the pad, and do the framing. As soon as I made the decision to build myself, I knew there would be hempcrete in it. H OW D O YOU M A K E H E M P C R E T E ?
I like to tell people that it’s not hard work, but it is a lot of work. Because I’m doing it by myself, I seem to do batches that are easily manageable for one person. I’m the only one that has made the crete and put it into my building, so it’s a lot of work. Just one rafter bay that I filled would be anywhere from seven to eight batches, and I have 20 of those bays to fill. I’ve made 160 batches so far, and that’s just the roof. Hempcrete is made by combining hemp hurds with lime and water, and I make batches in one gallon units. So one gallon of water and of lime, and four gallons of hemp hurds mixed together.
W H AT T Y P E O F S A F E T Y G E A R I S N E E D E D F O R WO R K I N G WI T H H E M P C R E TE ?
Lime is caustic, so two things. If it gets on your skin it can really dry it out and cause wounds or sores to happen. And then if you breathe it, it can cause respiratory problems. So gloves and respirators, plus a form of eye protection, because depending on how you’re mixing, there is so much dust from the hemp and the lime that it’s in the air and gets all over you. The reason I wasn’t wearing gear in the photos was because I paid attention to the winds, and I never stand in the actual dust cloud.
“I CHOSE HEMPCRETE INSTEAD OF FIBERGLASS INSULATION OR DRYWALL BECAUSE HEMPCRETE IS NON-TOXIC, HAS NO OFFGASSING, NO SOLVENTS, IS MOLD RESISTANT, HAS NATURAL HUMIDITY CONTROL, AND IS DURABLE AND SUSTAINABLE.”
W H Y DI D YOU C H O O S E H E M P C R E T E OV E R T R A DI T IO N A L B U I L DI N G M AT E R I A L S ?
I chose hempcrete instead of fiberglass insulation or drywall because hempcrete is non-toxic, has no off-gassing, no solvents, is mold resistant, has natural humidity control, and is durable and sustainable. It also sequesters carbon naturally while being fire and pest resistant, self regulates temperature and is a great insulator!

W H AT D O YOU WA N T TO SEE HEMP USED FOR?
Everything. Literally everything. And this is where it’s going to go. All building materials will go to hemp. Instead of hardwood floors of bamboo, it’ll be hemp. They’ll make hemp wall boards and hemp brick - in Europe they already make these, but we’re so backwards in the USA. I’d really like to see it go to the hemp refuse and go back into our food. A long time ago our livestock used to eat the hemp seeds and plant, and that became part of our dietary cycle. So beef was eating the hemp, and we ate the beef and got the benefits of hemp. I’d like it to be back in our food system. W H AT I S YOU R H O P E F O R T H E F U T U R E O F T H I S P R O J EC T AND THE PLANET?
This project was more personal than anything. I’m not doing it for an article or to say I’m one of the few hemp houses in the state. I personally like the material of hempcrete and wanted to work with it and try it. As far as the rest of the world, one of the thoughts I have is turning it into a hospice respite - so people can have a bed that they need, with a nice place to live out the rest of their days. But as far as where I see the long term thing, the more I talk about hemp and the more people learn, the more the collective consciousness will be moving towards hempcrete and other forms of hemp. The building is for me personally, but the long term thing is that I want more people to be exposed to hemp and understand why it’s such an amazing plant.
Disclaimer: Hempcrete is a building material, so before trying to make it, do your research and always wear proper safety gear!

nwlEAF.COM
THC’S KIND COUSIN
Dr. Adie Rae (Wilson-Poe) has built a name for herself as a preeminent researcher on the uses and effects of Cannabis compounds at her research facility, Habu Health, and her research company, Smart Cannabis - which she runs alongside Jeremy Sackett of Cascadia Labs, as well as Pruf Cultivar’s Jeremy Plumb and Steph Barnhart, the brains and muscle behind the Cultivation Classic. She believes that the Cannabis plant will work wonders, especially as consumers find new ways to experience the full benefits of the plant, aside from THC heavy recreational usage. “The wonderful thing about CBD is that it’s not
ocT. 2019
going to hurt anyone. Even at really high doses,” Rae said. “I think we’re getting over the moonshine days of Cannabis, where people can actually enjoy the entire joint and not just take one or two hits and get really high. And I think the answer to that is hemp CBD flower.” Rae believes that the future of the Cannabis-based wellness industry involves a healthy respect for THC and its power to supplement the beneficial effects of the other molecules in the plant. She, like many other researchers, warns against isolated, high dose consumption of THC, and instead believes that people would benefit more from shifting the ratio to CBD - THC’s rational, wellnessfocused cousin. “Let me draw an analogy,” she said. “Smoking 25% to 30% THC flower is like having a shot of whiskey. Smoking an entire hemp pre-roll is like having a light beer. Until now, we’ve only had shots of whiskey.”
CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO WELLNESS
Trust is hard to come by in the new market, with so many new companies claiming to have the next wonder product. One of the biggest concerns for consumers is
the cleanliness of their product. As of right now, the FDA and USDA are not governing what people can put in their products. “We don’t have that level of oversight yet, and that’s a complete disservice to consumers,” Rae said. “That’s their job, consumer safety.” One way to side-step this issue is to seek out foundational brands that have already gone through years of trials and building trust in the market. It helps to have a knowledgeable herbalist to dole out advice. “As a shop owner, I really try to vet the companies I carry and understand their processes,” says Ashley Dellinger, owner of Lumi Wellness Shop in Portland. “Where are they getting their oils from? People like East Fork and Sun God Medicinals, I know that I don’t have to hand-hold them. They’re always going to do the right thing.” But say a consumer doesn’t have access to someone like Dellinger who has vetted the products what do they do then? Rae says due diligence and informed consumption are the only way to go. “We know that CBD is safe as long as it’s not contaminated with something like pesticides,” Rae said. But how do people know that a product is pesticidefree? Or that it even has CBD in it to begin with? “The only way to know that a label is accurate, is if a third-party laboratory has tested the product,” Rae said. Third-party laboratory testing is an expensive but necessary piece of the puzzle. Because of high testing costs, it will be obvious whether a company gets its products tested - it will be proudly displayed on the packaging and the company’s Web site. Testing will show whether the product has been contaminated by pesticides, and will also include information on the entire range of cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBN, CBG) and terpenoids in the product. “That’s not just to make sure you’re not buying snake oil, and that you’re actually buying CBD,” Rae said. “The best companies are going to be extremely proud of their phytochemical makeup.” Dellinger says that if people buy exclusively from companies that third-party test their products, that
MARKET will go a long way to weed out any bad actors, and force the industry to self-regulate. In her time as a hemp broker, she has seen the need for this firsthand.
“I’ve been out to hemp farms that are like, ‘Oh, we’re organic, we’re pesticide free,’” she said, “But then you look over at the winery right next to them, and you see the overspray where it has hit their hemp crop, and they’re not taking that and throwing it away.” Rae brings it back to the moonshine analogy, and the slow shift from an unregulated market to a regulated one. “If it hasn’t been tested, it’s like buying moonshine out of the back of a truck on the side of the road,” she said. “To make sure you get the best product for your money, make sure you do the homework ahead of time.” “If you’re going to the coffee shop and they offer to put CBD in your coffee for an extra three dollars, that’s probably not the best time to buy CBD. Unless it’s from East Fork.”
COMPOUND COCKTAIL
Manufacturers use a variety of methods to create CBD products. Some attempt to isolate the CBD molecule in distillate oil or isolate powder, which is then mixed into delivery methods in order to create a CBD-only effect. Others use the broad spectrum approach, extracting the entire molecular profile of the plant. These products will usually denote that they are broad spectrum, or sometimes full spectrum. In order to make sure that you get the most out of your CBD, Rae recommends going with broad spectrum products, which include the full suite of complementary molecules and compounds. She calls it the “multi-vitamin approach.” “We know that CBD is enhanced by other cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids,” she said. “That’s the best way to support your endocannabinoid system.” “If I was at New Seasons, and one of my close friends was with me, and she or he asked me
for a recommendation on a CBD product, I would recommend broad spectrum,” she said. “Even if it was $30 more, I would recommend it.”
Many companies offer both broad spectrum and isolated CBD products, in order to serve multiple demographics. Broad spectrum products may have trace amounts of THC, though they’d be so far below the threshold that they would have no impact on the consumer, other than supporting the efficacy of the CBD. But not everyone can go that route. “If your job is on the line, and you can’t afford to have any THC in your blood whatsoever, then a purified CBD product may be best for you,” Rae said. “But then you’ll be missing out on health benefits.”
FINDING THE RIGHT ROUTE
So you want to see if CBD will work for you, but you’re not sure where to start. Hold off on the CBD socks for a minute. Dellinger says she likes to help her customers find the best route by finding out what they hope to accomplish with CBD. “If you’re in really bad pain, you don’t want to microdose on an edible that’s packed with a lot of sugar, that’s going to increase inflammation,” Dellinger said. She believes that inhaling is currently the way to get the most benefit out of your CBD, and suggests pre-rolls and vaporizers for the quickest uptake and the most significant benefit. Rae feels the same way, and goes as far as to warn people off of edibles if they’re looking for maximum effect. “When you eat CBD, it has to go through your digestive system, and it’s your liver’s job to process and distribute this to your bloodstream,” Rae said. “And your liver is really bad at this.” The difference between delivery methods can vary significantly. “Edibles can take 30 to 90 minutes to take effect, and only offer 5% bioavailability,” Rae said. “Tinctures ingested sublingually (held under the tongue for 3 minutes) offer significantly more impact.” Like Dellinger, Rae believes that the most effective delivery method currently on the market is inhalation, but she doesn’t recommend combustion - as it destroys the terpenoids and you lose out on a
significant part of the experience.
The best way, she says, is to find a tested, reliable source of whole smokable hemp flower and to use a flower vaporizer. If you must use vape cartridges, she says to make sure the oil is tested, that the cartridges have a ceramic coil, and that the battery has a variable voltage set on the lowest setting. For those with muscle and joint pain, this can be supplemented with topicals. Rae says to look for topicals blended with compounds that offer increased bioavailability, such as jojoba oil, rosemary or other cosmetic essential oils. Regardless of whether you’re consuming isolated CBD, broad spectrum with a little THC, or any number of the recreational and medicinal products on the market, Rae wants to make sure people are practicing careful consumption, and consulting a doctor if they’re also taking prescription medications. “People have varying levels of tolerability, particularly for THC,” she said. “Pay attention to how you respond to any product you’re consuming, and consume it mindfully. “Just because your spouse takes two dropperfuls, doesn’t mean that is going to work for you. Pay attention to how you feel. Keep a record of what you took.”
SO YOU WANT TO SEE IF CBD WILL WORK FOR YOU, BUT YOU’RE NOT SURE WHERE TO START. HOLD OFF ON THE CBD SOCKS FOR A MINUTE.

THE SWEETEST TREAT A DABBER CAN ASK FOR, THIS GELATO WILL LEAVE YOU MELTING INTO A EUPHORIC PUDDLE THAT IS PERFECT FROM BREAKFAST TO DESSERT. Bred and developed by the Cookies Fam in California, the Gelato strain has become immensely popular given their frosty and high potency flowers, combined with a uniquely sweet and creamy flavor. Concentrating the deliciousness into oil intensifies all of the elements, with a bright, citrus fuel taste that is as rich and creamy as a bowl of traditional gelato. The rocks and sauce are dripping in terps (2.31% terpenes), with a sour funky undertone and high octane citrus bite stirred up for a dab. A low temperature dab amplifies the citrus cream on the inhale, lightly expanding in the lungs to exit with a sharp fuel exhale that tingles the palate and tickles the nose with rich, earthy kush notes. Dynamic and flavorful, the terps melt away with the THCA diamonds for an extremely intense and heady high. Effects crash into the mind heavily, with an almost overwhelming stoniness that is definitely euphoric, but comes with almost overwhelming chillaxed vibes. Daily dabbers will find this to be a stoney sativa (84.84% THC), but new ones might find themselves couchlocked and giggling after a fat dab. Great for daytime use that requires creative energy, or perfect for a ‘just off work’ dab, we recommend the Gelato whenever a dab treat is on the menu. Golden Grams is focused on delivering the best flowers for processing possible, creating delicious flavors in top shelf concentrates that are all natural and strain specific. DENVER Jessica stopped suddenly as we hustled through the Denver International Airport, the look of terror in her eyes told me it was something big. “The camera bag!” she finally exclaimed.

I let out a groan. We were in Denver to link up with some friends throwing a local event while snagging coverage of the drought that was gripping Colorado’s legal market. The previous year’s crop had failed to meet demand and shops were left scrambling to keep the shelves full. By now our camera, which had been left at

A 30 minute Uber ride across town landed us at Ian Scarfini’s apartment. I had met Ian half a decade ago, a young homeless skater on the streets of Denver who suffered from debilitating seizures. In spite of his circumstances, Ian’s personality and die hard optimism instantly set him apart from the rest and we had quickly adopted him as a member of the crew. Ian met us in the parking lot “You made it!” He shouted, a big smile on his face. I cracked a jar of good Washington indoor bud on the way up the elevator, letting the smell fill up the tiny space. Ian’s eyes bugged out of his head when he heard how little we paid for it, producing some mids that were circulating locally. “The drought in Denver is crazy right now.” He exclaimed as if in explanation.

Cannabis got cheated. About a hundred years ago, prohibition was passed “to cure the ill society” by eliminating liquid courage and other sinful excesses, making the 1920s the decade where wetting the whistle got replaced by the crossword puzzle and Charlie Chaplin. Being an alcoholic must have sucked. Being a stoner would have been worse. Because, although they couldn’t make liquor go away, they sure put the kibosh to marihuana by labeling it as a poison. What a bunch of assholes. But you know what they also couldn’t make go away? The weirdos who loved the madness of reefer. Maybe they loved ragtime and jazz music and Kerouac along the way, and trippy tapestries and Hendrix and Cheech and Chong and Half Baked and Harold and Kumar and Tame Impala. Maybe they loved a lot of things about the way it makes us feel healthy and happy. We love it. And love is a powerful phenomenon. You can’t kill love. Because it will survive (just as the cockroach survives) and evolve into something indistinguishable. After all, it is a weed. And if there is sun and water...it will grow. The freaks flags are flapping in the wind and inmates are the new CEOs of the asylum. This is the beginning of the globally recognized, legally empowered culture of Cannabis where anything goes as long as you’ve got an open heart. Everyone’s welcome. Be prepared to be blown away. It’ll mend your untethered sail. Cheaters don’t win in the long run. Sometimes a hundred years. 2020 is the year of vision. We’re gonna dance the Charleston.
