This month's delectable cover comes to us from Santa Barbara, CA-based illustrator Daniel Sulzberg, whose stunningly layered and surreal work has been published around the world by The New York Times, Nike, Red Bull and many more. Leaf Creative Director Daniel Berman and Chief Operating Officer Tom Bowers worked closely with Sulzberg to craft this Wonka-like spin on Santa's workshop, complete with stoned little elves and red-eyed gummy worms. This month, we hope you take a moment to enjoy some wonderful local Cannabis edibles, dive into this special issue, and take a much needed break! Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Edibles Issue of Oregon Leaf! Edibles are packed full of holiday spirit in the form of cannabinoids and terpenes, which is the perfect way to float through the holidaze without a hangover. How do you think Santa does it, after all? Lots of infused 11 reindeer feed and cookies baked with love and weed! All joking aside, as I head into the holiday season abstaining from alcohol, I find fresh gratitude for Cannabis in all shapes and sizes. When heading to shop, or “THE BENEFIT worrying about menus or travel, CBD can really lower anxiety – I FIND BY great for everyday life or if you find yourself experiencing too CHOOSING high of a THC dose. Have you ever white knuckled a 200mg THC CANNABIS trip to Costco? It can get a little sketchy! Overall, the benefit I find INSTEAD OF by choosing Cannabis instead of alcohol is the freedom to live in ALCOHOL IS THE FREEDOM TO LIVE the moment without letting the high-strung nature of the holidays IN THE MOMENT, get to me. WITHOUT LETTING THE I grew up in a household where this time of year translated into HIGH-STRUNG stress-cleaning and worrying about what distant family members NATURE OF THE HOLIDAYS thought. And of course, lot’s of boozing. No family is perfect and GET TO ME.” mine tried very hard, but I have to wonder what life would have been like if weed had been legal during my childhood. That’s the biggest gift I am giving to my daughters and family this year: The gift of sobriety, and the lessons that come with handling stressful situations and celebrations (often one in the same) without turning to alcohol. With teenagers in the house, I do have to be discreet – which is where the edibles really help bring the buzz that makes the holidays so merry and bright. When I started the first Leaf in 2010, edibles were untested, often over or under infused, and generally left an untrustworthy taste lingering in your mouth. Today’s stoners have so many options it’s dizzying, with drinks and chocolates and baked goods to tease the palate, and tinctures and formulas for sleep or stress for those needing rest. We live in a wonderful time for plant medicine, literally blooming with options and lighting a new way of wellness forward – without the pharmaceuticals and booze automatically baked into the situation. But we do look forward to baking ourselves to the perfect 420º this holiday season and we hope you’ll join in the festivities … just make sure you wrap the presents first. @NWLEAF

SNICKERDOODLE INTRODUCING HIGHER CULTURES’ EXCLUSIVE HOLIDAY FLAVOR!

“Cannabis users typically want the heat, or whatever gives them the best effect – which is an area that we thrive in.”
Crown B Alchemy crownbalchemy.com @crownbalchemy
Why did you start Crown B Alchemy? I always knew that I wanted to run my own business, and it was just good timing. I had been in medical heart device sales for around 16-17 years, but just got bored. The money was great, but I knew that I wanted to do something different and for myself. A buddy and I were in Vancouver and tried an infused syrup called Zoot. This syrup was only 30mg, but the effects were heavy and we got super stoned. It tasted like holy hell though, and I thought, ‘You know what? If I can get these effects in something that tastes better, we’ll have a winner on our hands.’ I started researching various processing methods and came across nano processing, which I was already familiar with from working in the pharmaceutical industry. It’s nothing new, just new to Cannabis. Pharma has been using it for decades.

What got you interested in Cannabis? Living in Northern California, Sonoma County, people grew a lot of weed. My mom used a little makeshift greenhouse to grow on our apartment’s balcony. She was a teacher back then and teachers didn’t make shit, so it was a nice small side hustle. I smoked a ton of weed in high school too, and we really had some fantastic indica strains in that area.
BRYAN ALDERMAN
CROWN B ALCHEMY Known for their diverse lineup of Cannabis-infused syrups and tinctures, Crown B Alchemy is an OG of the Oregon Cannabis market. We spoke with the company’s Founder and CEO, Bryan Alderman, to learn what makes their brand stand apart and what they hope to see from the future of edible making.
How is the current state of the edible market? The market is evolving at the right pace. It seems that there are a large number of new Cannabis users who don’t want to take up smoking. Edibles are a great fit for this demographic, which is growing every day. We’re seeing double-digit increases every year, so yes, the market is responding very well to our products. There is always going to be a place for the high-end products in any particular category, and there will always be a place for the least expensive. We’re a recreationally licensed company, but we’ve found that we have a strong medical following. Our syrups are technically labeled as a tincture, allowing us to increase the dosage up to 1000mg. Our 4-ounce bottles offer a true bang for your buck. I’ve been getting emails from medical patients letting me know that our Cannabull has helped them decrease their RSO usage. Nothing’s wrong with RSO, but let’s be honest – it tastes horrible. Why choose Crown B Alchemy? Cannabis users typically want the heat, or whatever gives them the best effect – which is an area that we thrive in. It took us nearly two years for the nanotech emulsion development for our Cannabull syrup. We looked at three different metrics: onset of effect, intensity of effect, and the overall length of the experience. We adjust our particle size to achieve the highest marks on the bell-curve for all three of the metrics listed. While most of the emulsion is in the nano realm, which is what gets you ‘stoned’ quicker, we do leave in some larger particles. This is what generates a longer lasting effect, keeping you higher for longer. Future plans? We’re definitely looking at moving into other legal markets in 2024 and to expand our product line. Aside from the Cannabull and Moonlight Serenade, we will be releasing nano-cannabinoid gummies made with real fruit. We’re aiming for early 2024, and are excited to throw our hat in the sea of gummies and let consumers discover the true power behind the development of our tech.
A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

A cross of Kush Mints and Gelatti that the team at LLO has tended into a bold and balanced representation of both branches.” dec. 2023
The cut comes from The Trinity Association and is a cross of Kush Mints and Gelatti that the team at LLO has tended into a bold and balanced representation of both branches. We popped open the POP-VAC jar – a delightfully satisfying experience and a useful feature for those who need assurance their terps are tucked in – and took some tokes. One pop of the jar revealed a pungent punch of perfume and a cookie-dough consistency and color. Digging in for a dab, we found delicious little terp pockets and a soft texture. With a name like Georgia Pie, some may expect a peachy and bakery-esque aroma. But while a warm pastry element was present, each scoop sent Kush-forward, herbaceous pepper fumes with a strong, doughy-fuel finish from the nose to the exhale. A buttery mouthfeel provided mounting evidence of this cultivar’s Gelatti genetics. But that classic Kush Mints freshness (not far from menthol) still finessed its way into the head and lungs, with lasting effect. That effect then manifested a fierce focus with a forecast of slumber – largely due to the physically calming sensation that teased the tension right out of our muscles. @LOWERLEFTORGANICS 77.2% THC 0.39% CBD 6.17% TERPS

"I really enjoyed making things that stood out on the shelf … something that people could have a nostalgic connection to.” DEC. 2023
Focusing primarily on her "Sweet Glass Pendants," Patula started working with the art form in 2004. Originally from San Diego and Temecula in Southern California, she also lived in the northwest Chicago suburbs for about 14 years. She now calls Eugene, Oregon home. "I've made pipes for years and was getting burnt out. I was looking to change things up, and around 2013 was inspired by emojis. When I first got them on my phone, I thought, ‘What would an emoji cupcake look like?’ And the ideas just came from that," shared Patula. After that, she started getting custom orders for specific dessert items that reminded people of a loved one, or a favorite treat they used to eat. "I really enjoyed making things that stood out on the shelf, something more ‘girly’ or something that people could have a nostalgic connection to," said Patula. Her wondrous creations range from familiar famous holiday treats such as candy corn and Christmas cookies, to classic goodies like Rocket Pops. And she takes you to the ice cream truck with her incredibly detailed cartoon character popsicle pendants – including Sonic, Jigglypuff, Spongebob and Bubbles. Her work typically retails for $120-$350 and can be found on her Instagram page @ reneepatula, as well as her Etsy and Big Cartel shops. You can also find her work in glass pipe shops all over the country!

Established in 2013 under Oregon’s Medical Marijuana Program, PDX Organix is a Portland-area operation running big flavors in small batches. We were gifted some of their Gastro Pop and thought it greedy not to share a bit about this fine flower with the folks of Oregon. IF THE BOLD LABEL and thick, heavy glass jar don’t cue you into the quality, then one whiff will. The crew at PDX Organix tended carefully to these particular terps, nurturing them into the pungent, fruity fantasy in front of you today. The profile is more complex than its lineage would let on, but it’s a cross of Apples and Bananas with Grape Gasoline. The midnight-black nugs are neatly packed into tight little nodes that barely break open to reveal its pretty purple interior. Breaking this down into a fresh bong bowl revealed a burst of deliciously deep, tangy chemicals that our noses did not need close proximity to appreciate. Much like the aroma, this flavor quickly surrounded the senses. With smoke barely halfway up the bong, we began to feel the crisp and fruity gas grabbing our palate. Without fail, the flavor followed the nose. There was a strong fruit presence, but with it we were able to capture more of the complexities – like an underripe lime laying on leather. Refreshing and intoxicating. Cool and warm. Balanced. Exploratory explanations of effects are often useless since each human perceives Cannabis in their own way. But there’s one thing we will say: If you’re not one to put faith in potency, PDX Organix Gastro Pop should send you to church.

REVIEWS | SPECIALTIES THE CO2 COMPANY LOYAL OIL Living up to its namesake, Loyal Oil is a brand brought to you by The CO2 Company – a label seen on shelves across the state since the OMMP-only days of 2014, when the Walsh brother-built company introduced the scene to the first vape pens. Since then, they’ve surfed the swells of the canna-seas and even built a bigger boat. Now boasting four brands in their fleet (Loyal Oil, Mama Lou’s, Full Spectrum and Fruit Lust), we opted to check out their Loyal Oil FECO (Full-spectrum Extract Cannabis Oil) line. This Cannabis and hemp-derived edible oil is alcohol-extracted, strain-specific and available in three options: THC/CBD, THC, and CBG. It is always smart to start low and go slow when consuming Cannabis. But any consumer who’s dabbled in everything from dabs to digest-ibles will urge extra caution when handling FECO (and RSO). There’s a reason these products are coveted as a comfort in the quiver of ailment arrows: Their origin story demands doses that (quite literally) duel with death. From those battling cancer to chronic pain, FECO offers an effective option that doesn’t require the daily dessert-binging of sweet edibles. As suggested by the producer (and heartily seconded by us), start with just a drop (0.02g). This dose will divvy out anywhere from 5-17mg of each listed cannabinoid, depending on your FECO selection (THC/CBD, THC, or CBG). theco2company.com/loyaloil | @loyal.oil.co

leafmagazines.com
Maples may have started off serving natural hard candies, but their latest offering brings the nectar of two timeless trees together for a terrifically unique experience: infused maple syrup. Just make sure you don’t dive in too deep … this maple syrup comes packing some heat. The exclusive Eastwood Gardens rosin collaboration comes in 100mg and 500mg bottle options. Each is filled with the succulent sap of maple trees, “tapped directly from a family-owned farm in upstate New York.” It’s then infused with rosin for a simple, solventless, natural nectar that beautifully balances the reality of rosin with the sweetness of the amber syrup. The versatile product can be used to coat pancakes, of course. But take it from a Canadian: The possibilities are endless with a little creativity. It’s an excellent substitute for brown sugar (or any sweetener really), a marvelous mixer in coffee, and a wonderful way to add moisture when baking cookies and cakes. These collectible little cuties even come in charming, leaf-shaped, clear glass bottles. It makes pouring the sticky, golden liquid into your favorite dish or recipe smooth and simple, much like the rosin ride that follows. maplescandy.com | @eatmaples

The brand has grown significantly since its brownie beginnings, now offering a variety of captivating confections and tantalizing tinctures to handle any hurdle life throws your way. If sleep has been slipping by, you may want to give the Hapy Kitchen French Vanilla Sleep Tincture a try. This 1:1:1 balanced blend boasts a bold 500mg of THC, CBD and CBN – resulting in over 1500mg of cannabinoids per bottle! The addition of vanilla bean speck and (non-Cannabis) terpenes makes this crystal clear, MCT oil-based tincture smell as smoothly as it goes down. If the name isn’t enough to entice FRENCH VANILLA 1:1:1 SLEEP TINCTURE you, one whiff of Hapy Kitchen’s 496.2MG THC / 534.4MG CBD / 522MG CBN Brown Butter Bliss Cookie should do BROWN BUTTER BLISS 1:1 COOKIE the trick. Its warm sugar and toasted 87.6MG THC / 3.6MG CBD / 97.2MG CBN butter aroma wrap you up in comfort MUDDY BUDDY COOKIE before the Sugar Magnolia hash rosin 99MG THC / 3.9MG CBD (featuring equal parts THC and CBN) TOFFEE CRUNCH BLONDIE BROWNIE 92.05MG THC / 7.35MG CBD even kicks in. For those craving some nostalgia, might we suggest the Muddy Buddy Cookie? It’s infused with Sand Castle Hash Co.’s Wedding Cake hash rosin and a THC-focused feeling. But at the forefront, it’s all rich cocoa flavor and chocolate candy crunch. The Toffee Crunch Blondie brings everything we love about Hapy Kitchen’s original brownie to a new flavor. Think soft, chewy goodness with a toffee twist. Tear into this tin and let the fun begin. hapykitchen.com | @hapykitchen.pdx Review by Amanda Day @terpodactyl_media.

REVIEWS | CONFECTIONS & CANDIES FIRE DEPT. CANNABIS SLEEPYTIME SNICKERDOODLE 99.40MG THC / 74.30MG CBD / 90.44MG CBN 9.40MG THC / 7.43MG CBD / 9.04MG CBN
Fire Dept. Cannabis has been “lighting the fire within” since 2018 when the brand brought its namesake from a Springfield, Oregon fire station where it all began. In our December 2022 Edibles Issue, we sat down with owner Tony Birch and he explained that they quickly outgrew the original location, but retained the name (read more on the brand in our archives at LeafMagazines.com). Today you can find Tony and team in the Portland area, where they’re whipping up edible products like gummies, crispy treats and cookies, as well as a selection of smokeables ranging from infused pre-rolls to concentrates and extracts. In honor of this year’s Edibles Issue, we’re winding down for the evening with the full spectrum, rosin-infused Sleepytime Snickerdoodle. It’s a 1:1:1 pairing of THC, CBD and CBN, with “indica-specific terpenes” for the perfect bedtime snack. Contrary to what you’d expect from a cookie, there’s no need to worry about a pre-sleep sugar rush. That’s because this tender, slender cookie only contains 2.8 grams of sugar in total (or 0.28 grams per serving). Snagging a “serving” slice of this Snickerdoodle is simple, as each cookie comes perforated with 10 sections. You can break or cut these apart for more accurate dosing, but we did it simply to savor the soft, chewy sensation of a timeless cookie that Fire Dept. Cannabis has fine-tuned for folks seeking a soothing sleepytime routine. firedeptcanna.com
FEEL GOODS LIVE RESIN GUMMIES
leafmagazines.com
From the makers of Fire Dept. Cannabis comes Feel Goods, a fruit-forward, infused product line that includes extracts, pre-rolls and these delightfully juicy jelly candies – offered in six flavors and varying sativa, indica and hybrid effects like blissful, centered and chill. Each gummy clocks in around 100mg of THC courtesy of Buddies Brand Liquid Diamonds and is packed in small pop-top tubes – offering portability and more importantly, protection of the soft, sweet and zingy gummy goodness. They’re organic, vegan-friendly and use natural inputs like vegetable juice for color and fruit oil for flavor so you “feel good” from the first bite. We popped the top on their Pink Lemonade Hybrid, Tangerine Sativa and Watermelon Indica varieties to learn more – but you can also keep an eye out at your local dispo for Blueberry, Red Raspberry and Strawberry. The fresh, juicy nature of these tempting little treats was enticing from first glance. We started with the Tangerine option and were not disappointed. The unmistakable citrus flavor was everything our noses teased and covered any trace of Cannabis extract taste. Each edible is about the size and shape of a standard gummy worm and can be split into 10mg servings for a little nibble with a big effect. The small serving size (a little larger than a pea) was a nice change of pace without sacrificing potency. tryfeelgoods.com | @tryfeelgoods “BLISSFUL” TANGERINE LIVE RESIN GUMMY 95.2MG THC | “CENTERED” PINK LEMONADE LIVE RESIN GUMMY 92.8MG THC | “CHILL” WATERMELON LIVE RESIN GUMMY 93.8MG THC

REVIEWS | CONFECTIONS & CANDIES CALYX CRAFT SQUIBS BLACK RASPBERRY, GRAPE, CHERRY & GREEN APPLE 10MG PER PIECE | 100MG PER PACKAGE
With a name as catchy and random as Squibs, the edible that started them all is still a top-notch gummy choice with a variety of flavors and effects. The humble Squib began as a gummy before Cannabis was legal in Oregon, and today they’re just as yummy and hard hitting as ever. With daytime and nighttime formulas, you can dial in your high as you see fit – making the only hard choice picking a flavor. We loved the soft mouthfeel and the tingle of the heavily sugared outside texture of these fruity wonders, where each bite felt like a luxurious pillow of sugary highness. Each of the flavors brings a fruity dynamic to the mix, with the Green Apple being our favorite with its sweet and tart, mouth-puckering flavor. The Black Raspberry was gently sweet and dark, and the Cherry was tart and mellow. The Grape tasted like a childhood grape soda, which we still enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a stoney mixup. Make sure to chow down on all the flavors of these melt-in-your-mouth gummies, and definitely prepare yourself for a case of the munchies when you do. calyxcrafts.com | @calyx.crafts | Review by Wes Abney @beardedlorax

BETTER EDIBLES FIFTY-ONE FIFTY GUMMIES
leafmagazines.com
Better Edibles is a small company with big offerings operating out of Independence, Oregon. Owner Steven Cho is always looking to bring new ideas to edible enthusiasts around the state – from nanoenhanced “Holy Water” to his latest invention: Fifty-One Fifty gummies. At first glance, these edible packages may appear similar to some others on shelves … but take a closer look and you’ll notice a lack of listed flavor. That’s because Better Edibles is bringing the magic of mystery to adults craving a thrill we thought went missing with our childhood Airhead candy stash. Cho even tells us that we can look forward to a “game” where customers can guess the flavor in shops (but you’ll have to stay tuned for details). In the meantime, let’s kick things off and see what surprises we can sink our teeth into. We’re beginning with a THC-only gummy, but options with an added 100mg of CBD, CBN or CBG are also available for consumers. The gummies are offered in a block form, with easily separated sections of 10 equaling about 10mg of THC per serving. As we rip into the sugar-coated candy, an unmistakable grape aroma and purple center demystify the mystery and make for a mouthwatering experience. There isn’t a hint of Cannabis detected in the scent and as it gallops across the palate, the grape is perfectly preserved. If all of the flavors are as enjoyable as this first pick, you’ll want to collect them all – quick! better-edibles.com | @betteredibles | Review by Amanda Day @terpodactyl_media

REVIEWS | CONFECTIONS & CANDIES MINI RETREATS 50MG THC/GUMMY 100MG THC/PACKAGE
It’s the little things in life that make it worth living, and in the case of these little treats, you can take a big mental vacation with just a few bites. If you’re like this writer, vacation is probably not on the calendar – even if it’s sorely needed. But you don’t need a week on the beach to find a mental retreat … whether that be a cat nap while a Retreat kicks in, or taking a gummy before a yoga and meditation session. In today’s digital age, you’ve got to find your own escape. And if that means eating both 50mg gummies in a cute tin of Mini Retreats and diving into a VR world, then so be it. We love the aptly-named Mini Retreats because they’re small and powerful. They’re also extremely delicious with a soft mouthfeel and smooth finish, and come in indica, sativa, hybrid or 1:1 options. The flavors include a very unique and gently sweet Lala Lychee, a fresh Strawberry and tart Blueberry, and another standout variety in the Sunrise Grapefruit that’s perfectly sour and sweet. Our favorite was the Passionfruit Punch – a floral and tropical twist on a classic punch flavor. The strain-specific labeling on the Mini Retreats packaging is absolutely awesome and gives the user a choice, plus much more transparency knowing the hybrid is powered by Grape Stank, or that the 1:1 is a blend of Garlotti and CannaTsu. With yummy flavors and potent effects, make sure to fill your pockets with a few tins of Mini Retreats and get in vacation mode … even if it’s just for an afternoon. retreatsedibles.com | Review by Wes Abney @beardedlorax | Photo by Amanda Day @terpodactyl_media
SMOKIEZ THCV 1:1:1 CHEWS 10MG THCV, THC & CBD PER PIECE | 100MG PER PACKAGE
leafmagazines.com
Embrace the New Year diet trend with the latest gummy from Smokiez that’s high in THCV … also known as the “diet weed” cannabinoid. While it might seem counterintuitive to use Cannabis to lose weight, THCV could be the hottest thing to hit weight loss since Ozempic. Of course we’d rather eat a delicious, soft and chewy Cherry gummy that’s rich and tart with fruity flavor than chase another diet fad – and in this case, the science supports the buzz. THCV is known to improve metabolism, limit hunger cravings, and is helpful in regulating blood sugar levels. We’ve also anecdotally heard from users that THCV has focusing effects for those with ADD/ADHD, acting as a potential alternative or supplement to over-prescribed medications. We truly live in an amazing time where companies like Smokiez are constantly trying and perfecting new cannabinoid blends and flavors. This brand is well known for their variety – with gummies that are always yummy – and these new THCV versions do not disappoint. We loved the Sour Cherry that was lightly sweet before turning sour, with a sharp cherry flavor and a soft mouthfeel. Within an hour, we had a relaxed but clear-headed high that was anxiety free and energetic – perfect for working, cleaning, or anything fun that requires a bit of focus. Without the side effect of the dreaded edible munchies, we were able eat half a bag throughout the day without going over the edge and into too-high mode. We look forward to seeing more THCV products from Smokiez and encourage patients and rec users alike to check out the latest blend of cannabinoids to hit the Oregon market! REVIEWS | CANDIES & SYRUPS MULE EXTRACTS KICKERS & SYRUPS
VERDANT LEAF LIVE SHO SYRUP
Mule Extracts has a high-powered lineup of products that are fueled by the company’s lowtemp extraction process, delivering a variety of cannabinoid blends that kick hard – just like a mule!
MADE WITH 100% LIVE ROSIN 500MG THC PER BOTTLE
We get a kick out of infused Dad jokes, and while that might make some readers groan, the Muleshine Syrup will turn any frown upside down. The Strawberry Lemonade 1:1:1:1 features equal servings of THC, CBD, CBN and CBG, for a full spectrum MULESHINE SYRUP high that’s 2:1 (INDICA) energetic and 1:1 (SATIVA) sweet. Simply MINI KICKERS add the syrup to a fizzy drink or take it by the spoonful! With options 1:1:1:1 (HYBRID) 1:1:1 (INDICA) in indica or sativa and different cannabinoid blends, Muleshine is an KICKERS easy way to infuse a mocktail. PINEAPPLE (SATIVA) Next up are the Mini Kickers, and we couldn’t help but adore and RASPBERRY POM appreciate their size. But don’t let these tiny gummies fool you – they (INDICA) hit hard, whether you’re going for the NW Berry nighttime CBN blend that’s a ticket to dreamland, or the fizzy-fruity 1:1:1:1 Strawberry Lemonade version that lights up the entire endocannabinoid system like a Christmas tree! And for those who want to get super high in one bite, the 100mg Kickers are just what you need to get a heavy buzz on. These single squares have 100mg of THC and are marked for dosing, but we scarfed down the Sativa Pineapple for breakfast in one sweet tangy bite – resulting in an excellent and rather floaty day. With a nice selection of indica versions too, the Mule Extracts team has every imaginable effect and dosage one could desire between their gummies and syrups. Taste the tropics and feel the exotics with the fruity and fun lineup of heavily infused syrups from Verdant Leaf. We love the freedom of being able to decide what to infuse a drink with, as well as choosing exactly when you want to do it. In the wide world of both non-alcoholic drinks and boozy cocktails, there’s enough variety of juices, sodas and recipes to keep a sampler busy for life. That’s why we love the SHO Syrup – you can take your favorite pineapple, orange, guava juice blend and add a spoonful of Banana flavored syrup for a winning combination. Or turn a Sprite blue with the Blue Raspberry for a syrupy soda that will definitely get you leaning … but without anything harmful. With 500mg of THC in each bottle, there’s enough potency to infuse a whole party punch bowl. Or for higher dose users and patients, to infuse a couple drinks heavily. We found the effects of the live rosin to be powerful and long lasting, with the full body and mind high that only comes from full spectrum Cannabis. At lower doses, the syrup gave us euphoria and lowered anxiety and pain. We mixed the Passion Fruit with a Red Bull before the gym and had a yummy drink – and a great workout. But be warned: It’s easy to pour a little too much into a drink and when we dosed up a morning OJ with the Guava syrup, we lost several hours to cat videos stuck on the couch. Luckily it was a Sunday! And what’s even luckier? There’s always another day and a new beverage to infuse – and with Verdant Leaf’s excellent flavor selection, we’ll run out of syrup before we run out of combinations to try! @theverdantleaf | Review by Wes Abney @beardedlorax

CROWN B ALCHEMY CANNABULL 250MG - 1000MG STRAIN-SPECIFIC MOONLIGHT SERENADE 200MG THC, 200MG CBD, 200MG CBN Some time ago, Crown B Alchemy nestled itself into a solid spot among Oregon’s first nano-enhanced cannabinoid products. But the syrups’ success didn’t simply rest on rapid onsets and versatility. These enhanced elixirs offered strain-specific effects and a potency that the people wanted. We’re speaking, of course, of the Cannabull – a line that offers a flexible, affordable and potent option for consumers looking to make the most of their medicating or mixers. With bottles ranging from 250-1000mg and flavors like blackberry, blue raspberry, green apple, mango, super punch and wild cherry, there’s something for every occasion. If you’re running low on recipes, Crown B Alchemy’s website has a “Mixology” page that highlights a host of delicious drinks incorporating their syrups. If mocktails aren’t in your plans, products like the Moonlight Serenade may offer what you need. This 1:1:1 syrup is also strain-specific and contains around 600mg of cannabinoids catered to sleep and relaxation. As “Oregon’s first-and-only, fast-acting, time-release, nano-cannabinoids CBN sleep syrup,” it’s a perfectly peaceful mixture of THC, CBD and CBN. We find that each of these syrups mixes nicely with low-sugar, lightly flavored sparkling water (like Spindrift) since the syrups themselves are filled with a fruity flavor and sweet finish that shines through. But if you’re looking for over-efficiency, we won’t judge you if you sip straight from the bottle. crownbalchemy.com | @crownbalchemy | Review by Amanda Day @terpodactyl_media

TRIFLE WITHTHIS MAKES 16 SERVINGS
THE CUSTARD 2 cups whole milk 2 cups heavy cream, not ultra-pasteurized 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon almond extract 6 egg yolks 6 ounces granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 tablespoon canna-butter, melted and cooled 1. Place milk and cream in a saucepan and bring to a boil. 2. In a large bowl, whisk the yolks with the sugar, cornstarch and canna-butter until smooth and pale. 3. Gently pour the boiled cream/milk mixture over the egg yolks, starting a few drops at a time while whisking quickly to keep the eggs from cooking. 4. Return the mixture to the saucepan, then cook over low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until it thickens enough to coat the back of it. Add the vanilla and stir to combine. 5. Pass through a fine sieve, let sit at room temperature for an hour, and cool thoroughly in the fridge.
THE CAKE
50
1 ¼ cups unsalted butter, room temp 2 tablespoons canna-butter, room temp 3 cups granulated sugar 5 large eggs, room temp 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ teaspoon almond extract 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 ½ cups whole milk, room temperature pinch of salt 1. Heat oven to 325º. Grease and flour a 10-inch bundt pan. If you don’t have a bundt pan, a 9x2-inch pan will work. 2. In a mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
FINAL ASSEMBLY

1. In a large bowl, gently combine the cake and custard. Fold in the fruit and pour into your serving bowl. Smooth the top.

2. Top with the whipped heavy cream. 3. Sprinkle with the amaretti cookies. You can make ahead of time, just wait to whip the cream if you can – and then sprinkle. The cookies may get soggy otherwise, and that would be a bummer.
THIS IS MY VERY FAVORITE HOLIDAY DESSERT. I serve it on Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve. Traditionally a boozy indulgence, this magnificent creation is infused with, you guessed it … Cannabis. Keeping the dose low throughout the holiday season, the butter is infused with Corazon De Pina – a blend of CBD and THC from East Fork Cultivars with a tasty twist of pineapple and pepper perfect for festive occasions. I find that it heightens focus and moments of happiness in a delightful way. Remember, this is a wonderful time of year to help people and animals – and a sprinkle of these vibes would be a wonderful thing to share with others. Trifle bowls are often surprisingly reasonable in price! I bought a bunch at Target last year for under 10 bucks. Gift a trifle and say, “Keep the bowl!” Now that’s nice. Laurie@Laurieandmaryjane.com

3. Add one egg at a time, mixing well. Finish with the vanilla. 4. Combine the flour with the baking powder and salt. 5. Add half the dry ingredients and half the milk. Mix to combine. Add remaining ingredients until just mixed. 6. Add the batter to the prepared pan. Bake for 55-60 minutes, until a cake tester comes out just clean. 7. Cool for 30 minutes before removing from the pan. Cut the cake into 1-inch chunks.
FRUIT 2 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1 tablespoon canna-butter, melted and cooled 1 tablespoon sugar, more if too tart 1. In a medium bowl, combine berries, canna-butter and sugar.
WHIPPED CREAM 1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream 1 tablespoon powdered sugar 1. In an electric mixer, whip the cream with the sugar until fluffy.

PRESENTS
Christ & Cannabis
leafmagazines.com
52
Each December 25th, people around the world celebrate the beloved holiday of Christmas — commemorating the birth of the Christian savior Jesus. So in this issue, I thought it might be fun to explore the possible historical relationship between marijuana and the messiah. THE ANOINTED ONE Though commonly referred to as Jesus Christ, it’s well established that his actual name was Yeshua (Jesus was the Greek translation) and that Christ was not his last name. Jews at that time didn’t really have surnames – they simply used their father’s name or land of birth as a last name (in his case, Jesus son of Joseph or Jesus of Nazareth). Christ was, in fact, not a name, but a title bestowed upon him – either by his disciples, or possibly even after his death. Derived from the Greek word christos meaning “anointed,” the title “Christ” literally translates as “the anointed one” or “the anointer.” In its practical sense, “to anoint” means simply “to smear or rub with oil or liquid.” But in its religious, Biblical context, it also means to consecrate or “make holy” someone or something through ritual. According to scripture, anointing was something that was done to Jesus, that Jesus did to others (particularly when healing the sick), and that Jesus encouraged his followers to do to themselves and others. Believe it or not, this practice – like many of Jesus’ activities – was considered radical and perhaps even heretical at that time, since God’s law expressly forbade the anointing of laypeople. Until then, only Hebraic priests and monarchs were allowed to be anointed. In “Bible Myths and their Parallels in Other Religions” (1882), author TW Doane notes: “[The practice of anointing] was common among the kings of Israel. It was the sign and symbol of royalty. The word ‘Messiah’ signifies the ‘Anointed One,’ and none of the kings of Israel were styled the Messiah unless anointed.” Anointing commoners was so taboo because it was believed that the Holy Anointing Oil would actually imbue the person being anointed with the Holy Spirit — enabling them to receive divine revelations and “understand the truth of God.”
DEC. 2023
HOLY ANOINTING OIL So what exactly was in this sacred anointing oil (also known in some sects as the “chrism,” which bears an obvious resemblance to “Christ”) that enabled one to communicate with God? Well, it so happens that God himself dictated the exact recipe for this Holy Anointing Oil (as well as who was and wasn’t allowed to use it) when he appeared to Moses during that whole “burning bush” episode: “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of q’aneh-bosm, 500 shekels of cassia … and a hind of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend ... Say to the Israelites, ‘This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. Do not pour it on anyone else’s body, and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred.’” (Exodus 30:22-33)
Now, we all know what myrrh and cinnamon are, and cassia is a tree bark very similar to cinnamon … but what the heck is q’aneh-bosm (or kaneh bosm), you may ask? Most historians have claimed that kaneh bosm refers to the root of the Acorus calamus plant (commonly known as calamus or ‘Sweet Flag’), which has been used as an herbal remedy for gastrointestinal ailments for millennia. But as I mentioned in my June 2022 column “Kosher Kush: The History of Jews and Cannabis,” some scholars believe that kaneh bosm was, in fact, Cannabis. It was Polish etymologist Dr. Sula Benet who first argued that the Aramaic term kaneh bosm might refer to Cannabis rather than calamus. In 1936, while lecturing in Warsaw, Benet claimed that, after deep etymological studies, she was convinced that the term had been mistranslated during the third century AD when the Old Testament was first translated from Hebrew into Greek. She explained that the root “kan” actually translated to “hemp,” and bos meant “aromatic.” And since the “m” represents a pluralization, the singular would be kanehbos…which obviously sounds remarkably similar to Cannabis. Dr. Benet’s assertion was later backed up by anthropologist Weston La Barre in 1980 and again over the past few decades by renowned scholar of Cannabis and religion Chris Bennett. Beyond mere linguistics, though, it’s also been pointed out that the amount of calamus outlined in the formula – 250 shekels, or roughly six pounds – infused into around a gallon and a half of olive oil would be highly toxic to humans. Six pounds of Cannabis, however, would not be – and in fact, could produce quite a potent psychotropic effect … perhaps even allowing one to “see God,” so to speak. “The skin is the biggest organ of the body, so of course, considerably more Cannabis is needed to be effective this way … much more than when ingested or smoked,” Bennet told Herb magazine in 2019. “The people who used the Holy Oil literally drenched themselves in it.” BAPTISM OR CHRISM? This “revelation” also shines a new light on the significance of Jesus’ baptism – arguably the most consequential and transformative event in his life besides his crucifixion. In fact, it is Jesus’ encounter with John the Baptist where the gospels of Mark and John essentially begin. “It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him. And there came a voice from Heaven, saying, ‘Thou Art My Beloved Son, In Whom I Am Well Pleased.’ And immediately, the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him.” (Mark 1: 9-13) So, it was during his baptism around the age of 30 that Jesus first heard the voice of God. And immediately thereafter, the Holy Spirit sent him out alone into the desert to fast for 40 days, where he was thrice visited by Satan. That sounds an awful lot like a shamanic vision quest – which, in Native/Pagan traditions, typically involved ingesting some form of entheogen.
If the Holy Anointing Oil Jesus used was indeed a form of Cannabis oil, it would certainly lend a level of
scientific credibility to some of the visions he reportedly had, as well as the supposed miracles he performed.
Which begs the question: What if it wasn’t just water that Jesus was baptized with? What if John also anointed him in Holy Oil as part of the baptism ritual? The Gnostic Gospels – a collection of texts written by early Christian mystics believed to predate the New Testament gospels – suggest that may be precisely what happened. In the book “Gnosis: The Nature and History of Gnosticism,” author Kurt Rudolph writes, “Anointing with oil has a greater representation than baptism in Gnosis, and in some texts, it is even regarded as more significant. In general, however, it is taken closely with the baptismal ceremony – the anointing taking place either before or after the baptism.” One of the Gnostic scriptures, the Gospel of Philip, even states explicitly that it is anointing, not baptism, that makes one a Christian. “The anointing (chrism) is superior to baptism. For from the anointing, we were called ‘anointed ones’ (Christians), not because of the baptism. And Christ also was [so] named because of the anointing, for the Father anointed the son, and the son anointed the apostles, and the apostles anointed us. [Therefore] he who has been anointed has the All. He has the resurrection, the light. . . the Holy Spirit. . . [If] one receives this unction, this person is no longer a Christian but a Christ.” Indeed, it’s only after his baptism (a.k.a. anointing?) that Jesus begins his ministry, performs “miracles,” and is eventually referred to as “Christ.”
HEALING OF THE SICK If the Holy Anointing Oil that Jesus used on himself and others was indeed a form of Cannabis oil, it would certainly lend a level of scientific credibility to some of the visions he reportedly had, as well as the supposed miracles he performed. Among the many ailments Jesus is said to have healed – often simply by laying his hands upon the afflicted – include leprosy, lesions, swollen muscles, blindness and demonic possession: “News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them.” (Matthew 4:24) “And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.” (Mark 6:13) A potent Cannabis oil applied to the skin would serve as a powerful topical medicine – allowing the body to absorb large amounts of CBD, as well as THC and other cannabinoids transdermally. Research has shown that cannabinoids have significant analgesic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and have been proven effective in treating many ailments similar to those Jesus supposedly healed – including muscle pain, anxiety and glaucoma, as well as skin conditions including dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and pruritus (which bear many similarities to leprosy). What’s more, anyone who’s seen Sanjay Gupta’s “Weed” special with Charlotte Figi on CNN knows how instantaneously and “miraculously” CBD oil can halt the seizures and shaking associated with conditions like epilepsy, rheumatism and multiple sclerosis – which, in Biblical times, might easily be mistaken for demonic possession. MARIJUANA MESSIAH? Did Cannabis-infused anointing oil play a role in Jesus’ supposed divinity? Could it be that what early Christians perceived as possession by the Holy Spirit was actually just being really, really high? Like most tales in the Bible, we may never be able to definitively prove these theories one way or the other. If they are true, however, that would technically make Jesus one of the very first pro-pot activists. “If Cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient anointing oil, and receiving this oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians,” Bennet postulates, “then persecuting those who use Cannabis could be considered anti-Christ.” In other words, a Christian should never be stoned for getting stoned. WHERE IS THIS GATE OF WHICH THEY SPEAK? Is it the one that you carelessly enter that leads you into a string of bad decisions, eventually overtaking your better sense of judgment where you surrender to any resistance against an ugly dependency on cocaine and heroin? Sure, it starts out harmlessly. Just a couple puffs on a joint because you caved to the peer pressure of your cool buddies or older brother and his friends. But next thing you know, you’re selling your ass on the streets – frothing at the mouth, comfortable with needles. You see, what I envision when I think of going through the Cannabis gate … it’s like entering a wide-open expanse of understanding. There’s a warm, inviting breeze flowing over a majestic mountain range colored with vibrant, beautifully lit growth in a lush habitat that is inviting and blissful. Well, maybe that’s LSD … but you get the point. There is no pressure to stay in this stoney place if it’s not what you’re vibing on, but nonetheless, you are quite welcome to indulge in all that makes you happy. Everyone is welcome. It is a place of tolerance and acceptance. Yes, some of the people appear a pinch dumb, but what the fuck? It’s way better than uptight, right? The point is this: If someone has a propensity to seek out the highest peak they can reach, only to jump directly off the cliff to the bottom of Marianas Trench – all in the course of a 24-hour period – then there’s probably something called “bad parenting” that had a part in their craving to escape the monster clawing at the inside of their psyche. Otherwise, Cannabis is not a gateway to anything other than a potential “Rick and Morty” marathon. And a gateway through the golden arches of McDonald’s to the podium from where you proudly ring the Taco Bell.
