A B O U T T H E C OV E R This month’s cover art came to life through the vision of Eric Simpson of Simpson Solventless LLC, who molded the center shape out of full-melt bubble hash, and the other shapes and letters out of solventless THC-A crystalline. You could dab this cover. The hash was painstakingly styled with the help of photographer and CA Leaf Content Director Tom Bowers, our hash expert Eric, CA Leaf Sales Director Nate Williams, and Creative Director Daniel Berman Zooming in from Leaf HQ in Seattle — working together create this aspirational image representing the innovation of the Cannabis industry.

Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Concentrates Issue of the Leaf! OUR CONCENTRATES ISSUE is my favorite of the year for one simple reason: I love dabs! My first dab was around 2011 – in the century old boiler room below the now closed Northern Cross Collective Gardens – and I remember feeling the oil touch the red hot nail as the vapor burst into my lungs with the force of a thousand bong hits. The world closed in around me and I felt the reverberation of raw THC as it pulsed through my blood and into my mind, sending me away for the next few hours, humming with a high that was unlike anything else. Over the last decade of publishing and working in Cannabis, I have personally seen the concentrate world evolve from homemade Rick Simpson Oil and open-blasted butane hash oil, to highly medicinal mono-cannabinoid extracts and vaporizable concentrates of all kinds, to being the precursor to a new world of edibles, topicals, capsules and more. For our Concentrates Issue we sought out the best examples of the different types of extractions, to share how they affect the body and the science behind the scenes.
13
FOR OUR CONCENTRATES ISSUE WE SOUGHT OUT THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTRACTIONS.
Concentrating Cannabis means exactly what it sounds like: taking a full plant and using a process or solvent to extract the purest essence of it. This makes it incredibly important to only consume high quality, pesticide tested concentrates. Quality concentrates have the ability to impart healing value that Cannabis flower alone cannot replicate, delivering a pure flavor and experience that captures the taste and effect of fresh Cannabis in a perfect dab. Look closely and you’ll see that concentrates cover every aspect of Cannabis – every product beyond flower – from medical to recreational uses and benefits. Our comprehensive Concentrates Issue covers the different extraction methods, terminology, ways to consume and much more. So take a dab, flip through this beautiful and informational issue, and learn something new that you can share with someone in need of Cannabis – as both a plant and a medicine. As always, thanks for reading and sharing the Leaf!

ast month marked the the 50th anniversary – on June 17 – of when President Richard Nixon declared the “war on drugs.” Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) and Cori Bush (D-MO) observed the occasion by unveiling the Drug Policy Reform Act (DPRA). The bill would end criminal penalties for drug possession at the federal level. It would shift the regulatory authority from the Attorney General to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Additionally, the DPRA would expunge records and provide for resentencing, and reinvest in alternative health-centered approaches. The bill also eliminates THE BILL ALSO many of the lifelong ELIMINATES MANY consequences associated with OF THE LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES drug arrests and convictions. The DPRA also incentivizes state and local governments to adopt decriminalization policies. Last week, DPRA – in partnership with the ACLU – released a national drug policy poll that found 66% of American voters support removing criminal penalties for drugs and replacing them with health-centered approaches.

MEDICAL CANNABIS PATIENTS IN MINNESOTA SEEK GUN RIGHTS
VIRGINIA’S CANNABIS LEGALIZATION LAW KICKS IN JULY 1

taunch conservatives and advocates of legal marijuana have formed an unlikely alliance in Minnesota to pressure the Legislature to allow medical Cannabis patients to own guns, reports KIMT 3. The more than 35,000 patients in Minnesota’s program can’t own guns as the law now stands because the federal government classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance, on par with heroin. Gun-rights supporters and pro-legalization groups are lobbying for Minnesota to petition for an exemption. If they succeed, the Star Tribune reports, Minnesota would be the first of 36 states that allow medical marijuana in some form, to appeal directly to the federal government on behalf of enrollees. or the third time in three months, the Florida Supreme Court dashed the hopes of Floridians who want to see expanded access to Cannabis. In a 5-2 ruling on June 17, the state’s highest court found a ballot initiative to legalize marijuana to be misleading. The initiative, titled “Regulate Marijuana in a THE STATE’S HIGHEST Manner Similar to Alcohol to Establish COURT FOUND A BALLOT INITIATIVE TO Age, Licensing, and LEGALIZE MARIJUANA Other Restrictions,” TO BE MISLEADING. would have also allowed Floridians to grow Cannabis at home. Had it reached the ballot, the initiative would have needed the approval of 60% of voters to become a part of the state Constitution. Attorney General Ashley Moody asked the court to weigh in on the ballot language in September 2019. It took the court the better part of two years to issue its ruling.

mazon will no longer test most job applicants for Cannabis use in the latest sign of America’s changing attitudes toward weed. Amazon, the secondlargest private employer in the U.S., also says it now backs legalizing marijuana nationwide. “In the past, like many employers, we’ve disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use,” the company said in a blog post in June. “However, given where state laws are moving across the U.S., we’ve changed course.” Marijuana users and advocates are cheering the news, but it may also bring relief to Amazon’s hiring managers: The company operates – and is rapidly expanding into – places where marijuana is legal. Amazon’s home state of Washington was among the first in the country to legalize marijuana for recreational use, back in 2012. The company is now building an East Coast headquarters in Virginia, where weed will become legal on July 1. It has also been expanding in New York, which legalized marijuana at the end of March.
overnor John Bel Edwards of Louisiana has signed into law House Bill 652, taking away the possibility of jail time for possession of small amounts of marijuana. It’s the latest shift away from Louisiana’s historically harsh stance on the herb. Edwards is a conservativeleaning Democrat who often moves in lockstep with the state’s sheriffs, and has long opposed legalizing marijuana. Gov. Edwards hailed it as a criminal justice reform effort. The decrim bill kept gaining strength in the two month legislative session that ended last week. Some viewed it as a make-good, after a GOP-sponsored bill to legalize Cannabis narrowly failed in the state House. The push indicated a growing willingness by the conservative Louisiana Legislature to look at loosening the state’s punitive laws surrounding marijuana.
tarting July 1, people in Virginia can smoke marijuana in the privacy of their home, but it will still be illegal to do that in a public space. It is also still banned on school property and in vehicles. Adults who are 21 and older will be allowed to have up to an ounce of Cannabis legally. That is about the weight of a pencil. Anyone caught with more than an ounce could face up to a $25 charge. Users will also be allowed to grow up to four plants per home. Virginia is not an open marijuana market, so people will need to be careful. When the law goes into effect, it will still be illegal to buy and sell marijuana until January 1, 2024, at which point retail sales are expected to begin.

ost Oregon residents are familiar with the TJ’s brand, named after founders Travis MacKenzie and James Orpeza. And if you aren’t familiar, then get ready to learn about one of the most popular, ethical and sustainable companies in the state. Most notably, their dispensaries feature their prominent in-house farm, TJ’s Gardens and sister company Yerba Buena, alongside other amazing partnerships and exclusive drops unique to their stores. Aside from providing some of the best overall selection in the state for recreational consumers, TJ’s also dedicates itself to the Forrest Initiative – a nonprofit that benefits some of the most vulnerable members of our community. TJ’s on Powell perfectly showcases everything TJ’s has to offer as a whole, and I was happy to review one of my personal favorites. Located near the busy 82nd Ave and Powell Blvd intersection, TJ’s on Powell is in the heart of the SE Portland neighborhood. Directly in front of a bus stop, and with street parking and dedicated curbside pickup zones, it’s an easy stop when commuting across town – though the shop is normally busy, so expect a small line. While the outside of the store is a low key dark grey, the inside features bright white tones and tile, and light wood accents with various plants speckled throughout the store. Upon entry, a posted security guard normally checks IDs before letting guests pass through to begin shopping, providing that necessary safety at all times of day. TJ’s has a free coffee and tea bar, so you can caffeinate before you medicate, also providing free water to their guests and advocating to “Stay High and Hydrated” amid the hot summer months. While waiting in line, customers can also browse the flower menu while looking at carefully placed display jars, or see the exclusive cartridge varieties neatly tucked into the large display cases just before the main shopping area. Here you’ll find a decently sized display refrigerator full of every extract or concentrate you could ever desire, strategically positioned between both budtending zones so everyone can see from a generally safe distance. Hanging along the white tile behind the budtenders are the market’s most popular edibles, infused beverages and pre-rolls, leaving plenty of time to shop around or ask questions while your budtender finishes weighing flower or packaging product.

TJ’s offers amazing flower, most notoriously from their own brand TJ’s Gardens and sister company Yerba Buena. They showcase beautiful strains like Darkstar, MK Ultra and Platinum Cookies. Alongside these amazing farms, they source flower from other ethical companies like Indigo Gardens and Benson Arbor. As far as extracts and concentrates go, TJ’s on Powell is known throughout town as the best source for the most selection. They partner with exclusive brands and get the hottest drops on the freshest hash from companies like Happy Cabbage, Bo’s Nose Knows, Tao Gardens and Highland Provisions, all of which can be hard to find in the competitive Portland market. They also feature a large variety of the most sought after extracts like Echo Electuary, Funk Extracts, Beehive Extracts and many more.
If you’re a dabbing connoisseur, make sure you browse TJ’s online Dutchie menu so you can see exactly what they have before making your selection. TJ’s budtenders are always friendly and efficient, especially considering the large customer volume they see on a daily basis. They’re happy to help with any questions and most budtenders have tried the product on the shelf, so they can offer a first-hand opinion about the product being discussed. And I have to say, as someone in the industry, the budtenders here never try to “custy” me and always let the customer shop for themselves, without being overbearing. Daily deals include discounts on top shelf flower, dabs, edibles and pre-rolls, and their ever-popular industry discount for those of us that have heavy tolerances that don’t quite match our wallets. TJ’s is proud to provide high-quality CBD oil to under-resourced families in the community through the Forrest Initiative, originally founded in 2014 as the TJ’s Kids and Families Program. With medicinal issues comes the all-too-familiar high cost of medicine, and TJ’s aims to make that a thing of the past when it comes to medicating with CBD oil. For children and families that have their medical marijuana card, TJ’s provides their own high quality CBD oil at no cost, benefiting the community in immeasurable ways through such kindness. TJ’s on Powell is a one-stop-shop for all kinds of consumers, offering top shelf flower at a competitive price and the most exclusive hash drops on the market, all while benefiting the community in a positive way. With ethics at the forefront of their brand instead of just their profit margins, TJ’s is a one-of-a-kind brand that everyone should be familiar with.
Happy Cabbage Farms Papaya Cake 6* Hash Rosin Processed using TJ’s Gardens own flower, the Papaya Cake 6* hash rosin hits smoother than most. It’s beautifully light and malleable consistency makes scooping any dab from the jar effortless. The citrusy Papaya profile provides a euphoric taste and the creamy Wedding Cake profile seals the deal when it comes to balancing this flavorful powerhouse. A low temp dab melts perfectly in the banger, making clean up as easy as ever, while still providing that solid high that melts any frustrations away with ease. The Papaya Cake gives a heavy high that doesn’t dominate the senses, but still puts you in the best mood to take a quick nap. Best smoked when you’re wanting to relax or alleviate any stress. @happycabbagefarms | happycabbagefarms.com 70.6% THC
Bo’s Nose Knows Tally Mon 90u Rosin Badder You can just smell the terps as soon as you crack the jar. Tao Bubble Deadhead OG Live Rosin 90-149u True to its heavy lineage, this Chemdog 91 x SFV OG cross hits the dome hard. Don’t let its light and creamy consistency fool you into thinking it’ll be a light and fluffy high, because one taste of the OG, chemy funk and you know what’s about to happen. This was my first try of Tao Bubble and I’m truly impressed. Color, flavor, high – it’s all there. It’s perfectly heavy behind the eyes and the funky profile is right up any Chem lover’s alley. SALEM
Starting his Cannabis venture in Indiana at age 18, Luke “Hash” Hamilton has been an avid consumer and connoisseur of Cannabis for an abundant amount of time. As his Xbox handle was @Hashhamilton, the name carried over and was adopted to name his brand. Where he was living, BHO became very popular and in high demand, by locals and friends alike. Seeing the interest for an elusive and valuable commodity, Hamilton put his head to work and figured out rudimentary ways to extract concentrates. Fast forward to today, Hamilton and his small team now operate a dazzling 3,000-squarefoot processing facility in Salem, focusing on providing the Oregon market with exceptionally high quality products in small batches. alking into their labs, the first thing that our team noticed was how sparkly clean the entire space was. When it comes to Cannabis cultivation and processing, cleanliness is positively next to godliness, and Hash Hamilton undoubtedly checks this box. As this diverse company processes hydrocarbon extracts and solventless concentrates, there are two separate rooms for each extraction method. Entering their immaculate C1/D1 room, we were taken aback by the amount of oversight and thought put into this space. Running a passive closed-loop, the extract experts fill the dewax column with dry ice to ensure that their end product is as clean as humanly possible. This machinery is mainly used for fresh frozen, whole plant material, but occasionally utilized for high quality trim and “b” buds.

Next door, we feasted our eyes on one of the largest and most state-of-the-art solventless labs we have ever seen. Using the Icon V-74 by ICExtract, extract artist Anthony O’Bannon, aka AO, can wash up to 300 pounds of fresh frozen material in an eight to 10 hour day. With the ability to fully adjust all of the settings, they have figured out a unique combination of torque and acceleration, providing optimal yields and high-quality end products. This super-efficient machine helps AO put his time towards other essential facets of Hash Hamilton. “Organic material is shining in the labs right now,” said AO, describing some of the wonderous material he has been working with from Indo Supply Co. recently. During our visit, the boys at Hash Hamilton busted out some fire jars of top-shelf hydrocarbon extracts like Koffee Cake, and a simply breathtaking solventless example of Tropical Fusion (Pineapple ZoZ x Moonbow #75) bred by the masters of Archive Seedbank. What can you expect to see from Hash Hamilton next? As Hamilton and his team continue to expand, they are always hunting for new farms and top notch material to process. They are constantly searching for new genetics and strains that satisfy their high standards. Unlike most owners, Hamilton personally shows up at grows to load up his freezer truck, providing guidance and insight in harvesting fresh frozen material. Overall, this ensures that the starting material is of the highest quality – creating an end product that is something special. The mantra is felt loud and clear here: quality in, quality out. If you haven’t already had the pleasure of trying Hash Hamilton’s BHO badder and diamonds, or solventless live rosin, we recommend getting your butts down to your local dispensary ASAP! Stay terpy, my friends.

Andrew Thompson Monkland
LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

After seeing the corporate side of Cannabis during his time in Colorado, Andrew Thompson said he’d been burned “by the mentality that this is just a commodity.” So, upon returning to Oregon, Thompson tackled the creation of his own company with a focus on grower relationships. He’s managed to keep the company small by sailing solo and has built partnerships with “like-minded, smallbatch” producers such as Roots Life Farms, Storm Cannabis, Real McCoy, Big Beard Farms and Bula Farms.
jun. 2021
TELL ME ABOUT THE NAME MONKLAND. I was born and raised in rural Oregon and Monkland, Ontario is what I named the company after. It’s an ode to my late father and the unincorporated community. We’re taking the name Monkland and creating something new in honor of where we came from. Monkland is in an “opt-out” area, but we’re located as close as we could get, which is The Dalles, Oregon. WHO IS BEHIND MONKLAND? I’m the majority owner, operator and extractor. I’ve handled every aspect of it. Pushing it through engineering and demolition, and most of the construction myself. It’s really an extension of me personally. I make every single batch and I work seven days a week. I just love making extracts and want to share that. I’ve found ways (like ancillary businesses) to really broaden the reach. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE FIELD OF EXTRACTION? I moved to
Colorado in the late 2000s. It was when medical over there was popping off and the relax in regulations gave me the opportunity to start basement growing. I decided I was going to go to the local community college and study horticulture because this was the industry I wanted to pursue. Around 2011, hydrocarbon extractions started making a scene down in Denver, and I was introduced to it in late 2012. It just sparked something in me and I dedicated every single ounce of time to hydrocarbon extraction. From (kind of) a garage hustle, I was able to make enough noise and catch enough attention to end up building Northern Colorado’s first medical/recreational hydrocarbon facility in Fort Collins in late 2014. WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO OREGON AFTER THE SUCCESS OF YOUR COLORADO CAREER? I learned a valuable lesson about corporate Cannabis and

being used as a means to an end. Around that same time, my father got diagnosed with terminal brain cancer here in Oregon – I came back home and had to start from scratch, and I really thought that I wasn’t going to be able to get back into the industry. I was just about to take a position in Portland when the Monkland thing just organically happened. I found a couple of people that wanted to invest in me and here we are!
A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTRODUCED TO DABBING?
About six years ago. Started off with BHO, mostly shatter and crumble. I was nervous to try it at first because I had only been smoking Cannabis for less than a year. It didn’t take long before that all changed and it became my primary method of consumption. So much has changed since then, but my love for dabbing has only grown.
OREGON LEAF
Budtender of the Month
HOW DOES BEING AN AVID CONSUMER OF HIGHEND PRODUCTS HELP YOU WITH YOUR BUDTENDING SKILLS? Living in Colorado, California and Oregon, I’ve
been extremely lucky enough to have access to amazing products since the beginning. I started using Cannabis for medicinal reasons and have always searched for the highest quality. Being that Cannabis is truly medicine for me, I will always recommend the consumer to try to get the best product available. It’s important to me to know how things are grown and processed, so I can know if it’ll truly help me or not. I am consistently trying all the new drops and love having the ability to learn first hand about the magic of Cannabis. I absorb so much knowledge every day, and sharing that is what it’s all about! Above all, consuming high-end products has taught me to show people how important investing in yourself and the things you put into your body is. You really can tell the difference! WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU CONSISTENTLY KEEP IN YOUR HEAD STASH? I keep mostly solventless hash rosin
around, though my all-time favorite thing to dab will always be full melt hash. My go-to brands are Bo’s Nose Knows, Decible Farms, and Highland Provisions. I almost never run completely out and love to keep a bunch of different flavors on deck! I really do enjoy the variety and potency of terpenes you get from each different strain. My preferred flavor profile ranges far and wide. One moment I might want something sweet like candy, and the next I’ll want a three week old dirty gym bag – funky.
LEAFMAGAZINES.COM
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL SETUP FOR CONSUMING CONCENTRATES? I really just love a well-
functioning rig, some sort of temperature reader, and a perfectly fitted bubble cap. I use different terp pearls depending on what I’m smoking and how big the dab I’m planning to take is. Oh, and don’t forget a little cleanup station – consisting of cotton swabs, 99% isopropyl alcohol and an old cut up cotton t-shirt rag. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST OUTSIDE OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? I think just being in nature and
seeing live music. Hiking, swimming, taking my dog on a walk – any free time I have, I try to spend it outdoors. Shows are slowly returning as well, and I can’t wait to enjoy a few!

synthetic cannabinoids? The law is clear: The sale of synthetic cannabinoids is not allowed.
YET WE HAVE licensees being permitted to sell chemically synthesized cannabinoids to the public with no transparency or truth in labeling. We have looked at peer reviewed literature, definitions of synthetic, consulted with chemists and doctors. There is much agreement everywhere else that when THC is created via chemical conversion from CBD, the resulting THC is a synthetic cannabinoid. The law is clear: CBD may only be used as an additive to increase cannabidiol content of a marijuana product. Yet we have licensees who are using it to increase the tetrahydrocannabinol content of their products. The law is clear: Any solvents, chemicals or compounds used to produce a product sold on our regulated market must be disclosed WE KNOW THAT on packaging. Yet we have licensees who are hiding behind claims of THE PUBLIC’S BEST INTEREST IS NOT a “proprietary process” who are not disclosing to consumers what SERVED WHEN WE chemicals are being used, including the use of acidified ethanol or ALLOW WEALTHY ethanoic hydraulic acid. INTERESTS TO SKIRT The law is clear: Processors are limited in the methods, solvents THE LAW, INFLUENCE and mediums that can be used to manufacture concentrates. Yet we POLICY, AND AVOID have licensees using unapproved chemicals and solvents. DISCLOSURE OF CHEMICAL PROCESSES We have not adopted any effective testing regulations for these AND INGREDIENTS TO synthetic cannabinoids, we are not testing for the most common CONSUMERS. byproducts created during conversions, nor the presence of residual solvents used to chemically synthesize these products. The current pesticide and heavy metal tests are insufficient to ensure consumer safety with regard to these synthetic cannabinoids. We are standing at an important crossroads in the evolution of our market. The good news is we have been here before, so we can let history guide us to best protect public health and safety. Initially, tobacco was sold in whole plant form to consumers. It was dried, cured and ground, and early cigarettes did not contain other additives. Much like Cannabis sold on our legacy market. During the evolution of the tobacco industry, large processors “innovated” and began adding chemical compounds and additives. These chemicals increased the addictiveness of their products, the long-term health effects from smoking, and their bottom line. Over time, nearly every major tobacco processor had to adopt the same strategy to remain viable. We saw how that played out for public health. We know that the public’s best interest is not served when we allow wealthy interests to skirt the law, influence policy, and avoid disclosure of chemical processes and ingredients to consumers. A lack of enforcement of Washington’s current laws and rules is placing Washington on a trajectory where the only viable business model will be to sell synthetic cannabinoids. We are talking about a future without marijuana farmers. We want products that are safe and regulated. We want truth and transparency in labeling. Our farmers, processors and consumers deserve better than the status quo. We need the state to take immediate action to stop the illegal importation, manufacturing and sale of synthetic cannabinoids to an unknowing public. Washington needs to enforce the law now.

Singer-songwriter David Crosby is one of the most recognizable music celebrities of the ‘60s and ‘70s – with his long hair and bushy mustache, he’s long been a prototype of what it means to be a hippie in the United States. As one of the founding members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, as well as the Byrds, he’s also a living legend in music – one that’s still active to this day. And, according to Crosby, all of his songs were written under the influence of Cannabis. Crosby is still a frequent smoker of the plant (these days
opting more for vaporizing than smoking outright) and also grows his own backyard plants each year. When asked how ROSBY’S RELATIONSHIP with our favorite plant is over 50 years old. GRANDPA'S GU C U LT I VAT E D b y E VA N ’ S C R E E K FA R M S
Jul. 2021
Bred by Oregon native Surfr Seeds, Grandpa’s Gun Chest is an explosive cross between Animal Mints #15 and Redneck Wedding (GMO x Trophy Wife) that offers nothing but excellence with its powerful lineage.
The flavor lasts throughout the entire experience, with each puff bringing an earthy, smoked yet creamy taste.
GUN CHEST
REVIEW by ALEX DUBS @WORKDUBS | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN @BERMANPHOTOS
In true fashion, the folks at Evan’s Creek Farms, based in Hood River, have craftily selected another exemplary phenotype that stands above the crowd, always cultivated to perfection. Their ability to select the best traits from various strains never fails to impress, and their Grandpa’s Gun Chest is a shining example of their continuous hard work and dedication to the craft. Caked in a silvery trichome sheen, the deep purple and black hues of the Grandpa’s Gun Chest clash against the light with specks of faint green penetrating through the dark every so often. Its dense bud structure makes it easy to break apart, quickly leaving traces of sticky resin on your fingers from this perfectly dried and cured flower. Every little piece offers more than meets the eye, turning any seemingly small nugget into a tiny mountain with how much flower is packed into each tight bud. After breaking the flower apart, the nose is filled with that favorite funky, pungent smell you can almost taste as the Redneck Wedding lineage shines through with that foul, musty smell I can’t seem to get enough of. Lingering alongside is the sweet and creamy yet heavy aroma of the Animal Mints, blending together like oil and water as if each profile is fighting to be dominant. Between the sweet gas, musty and earthy smell, each profile is punching against the other in the best way possible. You can easily gaze upon and smell this flower and just know that it’s going to be a pleasantly stoney high. Packed into a bowl or rolled into a joint, the flavor lasts throughout the entire experience, with each puff bringing an earthy, smoked yet creamy taste that isn’t harsh or off-putting. The loud, musty nose translates surprisingly smooth, leaving the palate fresh and without that sometimesoverpowering funk lingering behind. With notes of wood, leather and chai, the taste is intriguingly unique compared to most strains with similar lineage. The high is most certainly something to write home about as the Grandpa’s Gun Chest provides a relaxingly balanced high that leaves the consumer stoned to the bone without feeling heavy behind the eyes. Perfect for a rainy day inside or relaxing by the river, the high is best for maxin’ and relaxin’ during the day or for winding down at night. But stoners beware, a little flower goes a long way with this one. Its effects hit hard and last for a while, so make sure you’re ready for what it’s about to bring to the table.

THE HASH ARTIST
Passion, practice and study led him down a path that started with the basic hair straightener tech, scaling up to a tee-shirt press, all the way to his current tool of choice – the Long’s Peak Pure Pressure rosin press.
SIMPSON SOLVENTLESS MAKING GREAT HASH is an art. Making art from great hash even more so. That’s exactly what Eric Simpson of Simpson Solventless, LLC, does in his lab in Northern California. You may have seen Eric dropping some niche rosin pressing knowledge on YouTube with Pure Pressure, or you may have seen his Instagram @simpsonsolventless, where he has helped to re-popularize hash art with his incredible solventless formulations and artistic molding.
A NORTHERN CALIFORNIA NATIVE, Eric is a self-
taught solventless guy that has been working in and around Cannabis since he was 16, helping to pioneer some of the earliest evolutions in the Cannabis industry. If not for the open blasters and tee-shirt pressers of decades past, we would likely not have the cache of extraction knowledge we do today – and Eric is one of those early adopters who got into the industry and developed a passion during a wave of Cannabis innovation. Like many of us, he started his love affair with Cannabis as a grower in small, intimate set-ups. However, after a little experimentation, Eric quickly jumped into the newly developing world of extracts – which at the time consisted mainly of open blasting BHO and pressing flower with a hair straightener. Passion, practice and study led him down a path that started with the basic hair straightener tech, scaling up to a tee-shirt press, all the way to his current tool of choice – the Long’s Peak Pure Pressure rosin press, where he is now
pushing the envelope for quality solventless. Today, Eric has turned his knowledge into a consulting business where he helps farmers and companies produce the highest quality products possible, using state-of-the-art solventless techniques. This ranges from helping to pick out the best cultivars for production, all the way to producing and formulating novel products for the market. Always generous with his knowledge, he has also earned a reputation as a high quality, dedicated educator in the space. His other benchmark – stamping, sculpting and molding hash – is not a new practice. Indeed, most of the hash producing world has traditionally stamped their hash product with a family seal or brand image, and this practice is still maintained to this day. Eric is helping to bring this tradition into the American solventless space by taking it to a whole new level — not only by branding his products with signature shapes, but creating straight up pieces of art to delight Instagram followers and
ERIC SIMPSON
hash connoisseurs alike. He also plays with temperatures and various types of solventless products to create new consistencies and exquisite product pairings that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are robust and flavorful. Working with everything from full melt hashes to solventless crystalline isolates to cold cured rosins, Eric utilizes all the tools in his arsenal to concoct tantalizing creations like two-toned THC-a crystalline donuts, and mushroom and skull shaped full melt sculptures I can only describe as Willy Wonka chic. Strictly utilizing the finest cultivars from the finest growers, Eric is quick to shout out his cultivators because he deeply adheres to the mantra of “fire in, fire out” for hash/oil production. The best hash maker in the world cannot produce a quality product from poor flower, and every quality resin worker knows this. When asked if he had a favorite grower, Eric humbly replied, “I can’t even shout out just one because they are all so quality, it’s just too many. I am really grateful for the growers I get to work with.” This excellent relationship with his cultivators and his self-made learning journey, combined with his commitment to education and passion for self expression, make Eric Simpson a name worth knowing anywhere in the Cannabis world – and synonymous with the forefront of the solventless industry. @SIMPSONSOLVENTLESS

THE concentrates issue
CONCENTRATES 101 DATING BACK TO THE LATE 11TH CENTURY, the original usage of Cannabis concentrates was for oral ingestion purposes, but since then, a lot has changed. Over the years, extract artists have continued setting the bar higher and higher by constantly pushing themselves to produce innovative ways to experience hash in different forms. These days, you can commonly find forms of extracts incorporated into topicals, pre-rolls, and of course, edibles. But the main question is: What defines something as an extract or a concentrate? These terms refer to a broad spectrum of products that contain higher levels of cannabinoids than are encountered in the Cannabis plant. They can be as solid as a rock like diamonds, or a liquid like honey – with some extracts getting their name from their appearance or consistency, such as badder, honeycomb and shatter. Below, you will find a guide to help you maneuver around the wide world of all things hash-related.
SOLVENTLESS
SOLVENTLESS CONSISTENCIES
BUBBLE HASH
LEAFMAGAZINES.COM
52
Utilizing water and ice, extract artists take their starting material, either cured plant matter or fresh frozen flowers, and carefully wash with a paddle in large buckets of ice water. This liquid is poured through a set of micron filters, meticulously separating the trichome heads. The extraction artist carefully removes the trichome heads from the filters to avoid breaking or damaging them. From there, the end product is either put into a freeze drier or air-dried to perfection.
SIX-STAR BUBBLE HASH Six-star bubble hash is the raw and unadulterated microns of trichome heads that provide the highest quality smoking experience. Six-star will usually be the higher microns, such as 73-120u, and looks like beach sand.
jul. 2021
HASH ROSIN After the bubble hash has been freeze or air-dried, the product is placed in another micron filter specifically micronized to produce hash rosin. Using a high-pressure heat press, a micronized screen is used to refine the hash with pressure to secrete what is known as fresh press rosin.
FRESH PRESS
BADDER
ROSIN JAM
Fresh Press rosin is pure and unmixed, coming straight off of the rosin press into your jar, without any additional steps added. This product often looks very clear and transparent.
Badder has a texture that usually imitates cake batter, soft and palatable. Cold cure and heat cure techniques are applied to achieve this type of consistency.
Rosin jam is a saucy combination of both THCa diamonds and terpenes. By utilizing a combination of heat and pressure, extract artists have further developed a new way to smoke solventless.
FULL PLANT EXTRACT/RSO (RICK SIMPSON OIL) With the purpose to produce more minor cannabinoids such as CBG and CBN, full plant extracts were originally created by the pioneer Rick Simpson. This process was done by simply soaking Cannabis for long periods in hexane or ethanol. Once this process is completed, the hexane or ethanol is removed with heat or evaporation, leaving a full spectrum product containing many more cannabinoids than traditional concentrates. Innovators have since created a new version of FECO, utilizing advanced CO2 extraction equipment.

HYDROCARBON BHO/PHO
Using the hydrocarbon known as butane, BHO or butane hash oil, was one of the first products to hit the common hash market. Propane is also used in this process, either in a mixture with butane or on its own. Working with highly evolved closed-loop extraction systems, the extract artist takes either cured or fresh frozen starting material and places it inside large steel columns for processing purposes. The gas is run through the material multiple times, extracting the terpenes, along with the plants’ fats and lipids. Once processed, this raw material is dewed to remove the undesirable components. From there, the product is dumped out in liquid form and then placed inside of a vacuum oven to purge and remove all solvents.
CO2
CO2 extraction uses highly sophisticated machinery that pulls high levels of terpenes amongst a broad spectrum of cannabinoids. Under controlled circumstances, supercritical CO2 dissolves substances into fractions that can be separated and removed. The end product is ideal for cartridges, edibles and dabbing purposes.
DISTILLATE
Cannabis distillate is created by using a combination of extraction processes. All distillate starts as final processed terpenes and THC. Different extract artists have their unique approaches, but most utilize a sequence of steam, pressure and heat, further refining the extract by removing any last impurities. This process is usually repeated until the final product is a light golden color. Ordinarily, distillate ends up making its way into edible products and cartridges.
HYDROCARBON CONSISTENCIES SHATTER
DIAMONDS
Shatter takes after its name, as this consistency of BHO is often very fragile and will break easily at the touch. Its appearance is clear and almost looks like glass.
Often dazzling and dancing with gleaming clarity and sometimes accompanied with colorful terpenes, THCa diamonds are as hard as a rock or, in this case, a diamond.
BADDER
HONEYCOMB
BHO Badder is a homogenized product combining cannabinoids and terpenes, that provides a very simplistic smoking experience. Similar to rosin badder, BHO badder appears soft and provides an effortless smoking experience.
Usually using cured material, honeycomb and crumble BHO look exactly how they sound. Both are whipped and can appear very soft, but disintegrate effortlessly when touched.

HYDROCARBON EXTRACTS are the most common and popular form of Cannabis concentrates on today’s market. This method of extraction utilizes solvents such as butane and propane to remove the desirable components – cannabinoids and terpenes – from the plant material. These extracts are then purged to ensure the removal of any residual solvent and that nothing but pure Cannabis oil is left over. Hydrocarbon extracts are highly diverse and can exist in a wide variety of consistencies and textures, as well as made from both cured or fresh frozen material – the latter of which is classified as “live resin” when in its final form.

This deep gold concentrate offers magnificent amber marbling right out of the fridge but maintains its sticky, sap-like consistency when left at room temperature for small lengths of time. At 9.30% terpenes and 77.35% THC, this OG trifecta offers a robust flavor and effect. Pungent, earthypine notes of Kosher are accompanied by the sweet, chemical profiles of Stardawg and Wifi #3. The combination delivers a heavy yet happy effect that leaves you feeling balanced, but beautifully blazed.
This exclusive rosin is a flavorful mix of one of Eastwood Garden’s most notorious cultivars, with its exclusive genetics coming straight from Oregon-native Wyeast Farms. This light yellow, fluffy rosin is easy to manipulate, dripping right into the banger with ease. The rosin’s taste differs slightly from the flower, the Zkittles inhale dominating with a piney, gassy profile as the Gelato-heavy lineage leaves those creamy undertones with each exhale. The high certainly packs a punch, relaxing the body and mind while still leaving room for the rest of the day’s activities, perfect for a wake ‘n’ bake or mid-day dab. The desirable flavor kept me coming back for more, so I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for the next limited-release drop to hit the shelves.

SOLVENTLESS EXTRACTION methods are as old as the tradition of Cannabis consumption itself. The first form of Cannabis concentrate, charas, was hash that was removed from one’s hands after harvesting the plant. Today’s techniques are far more sophisticated, but still utilize very basic principles to create flavorful and potent Cannabis extracts. The two most popular styles of solventless concentrates are the old school bubble hash, which is primarily used as a bowl topper, and hash rosin, which has skyrocketed in popularity over the last year.
RUNTZ BADDER
By Resin Ranchers Runtz has been taking the industry by the storm, and we see why. This legendary cross of Zkittlez and Gelato is a serious match made in heaven. Utilizing their single source material, Resin Ranchers took this cultivar and turned it up a notch. This caramel-looking badder was gassy with a hint of citrus from the Zkittlez lineage.

This immaculate-looking and tasting Wedding Cake (Triangle Kush x Animal Mints) badder is the perfect dab for grounding and creating balance. Happy Cabbage and Derby’s Farms teamed up for this 6* hash rosin run of Gelato 25. The product of this collaboration presents a pale, nearly translucent, white-gold hue that slowly turns opaque with warmth. On the dabber, it takes on a lustrous, glow-in-thedark quality and gooey texture. The nose offers a gentle, sweet aroma reminiscent of dough, mango and mint. But each puff provides a peek into the strain’s funkier, skunkier genetics with a terpene profile that lingers on the palate. Its cannabinoids are quick-hitting, with a relatively short-lived peak effect. @HAPPYCABBAGEFARMS $70-80/G, 66% THC CULTIVATION BY DERBY’S FARM @DERBYSFARM REVIEW BY AMANDA DAY @TERPODACTYL_MEDIA

ALT. CANNABINOIDS WHEN IT COMES TO CANNABINOIDS, it’s safe to say that most consumers recognize the plant’s two most common: THC and CBD. But as the industry develops, so does our access to a growing array of options. Getting to know how each compound influences the endocannabinoid system can help you choose the most appropriate product for your needs. We won’t overwhelm you with all 100+ cannabinoids, but here you’ll find a few less common compounds that are starting to catch consumer attention.
JUl. 2021
THCA
THCV
THC-O-ACETATE
Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid is the precursor to THC. It is primarily found in live or raw Cannabis and is mostly converted during the drying and smoking processes. This compound is technically non-psychoactive, but has displayed similar anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties to THC.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin is another naturally formed compound that varies in amount across cultivars. While much less abundant than THC, this cannabinoid has been shown to act as an anticonvulsant, neuroprotectant and appetite suppressor.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin acetate requires lab intervention to produce. This synthesized prodrug is converted from THC or THCa with the help of a few additional chemicals and is said to be up to 300% more potent than THC.
CANNABINOL
CANNABIGEROL
CANNABICHROMENE
Cannabinol (CBN) is a product of THCa/THC oxidation. It has a relatively weak effect on the central nervous system but is widely reported by consumers to cause sedation. Research suggests that this cannabinoid may even offer immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties.
Cannabigerol (CBG) is non-psychotropic and primarily found in high CBD varieties. This promising molecule has shown scientific potential in reducing cancer cell growth, easing inflammatory bowel diseases, and treating intraocular issues like glaucoma.
Cannabichromene (CBC) is one of the most abundant non-psychotropic compounds in Cannabis. Like many other cannabinoids that influence the CB2 receptor, CBC has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. It also possesses the ability to augment effects when co-administered with THC.

UMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS EASIER. Warm weather entertaining is the best, so take advantage of what’s fresh and keep things simple-ish. The kale salad is a perfect warm weather recipe – feel free to add some cooked chicken or shrimp and make it a main course. The lemon is lovely. This is my very favorite chicken dish, easy to make and to customize. Add some cooked sliced sausage and grape tomatoes if you are looking to be creative. I make it throughout the summer with the arugula I grow on my deck. Crazy but true, this has been my daughter Olivia’s favorite sandwich for years. It’s pretty rad. I had my doubts, as I’ve never been a Nutella fan, but I confess to adoring it in this presentation. An unforgettable combo – if you are going to be making the sandwich in advance of eating, rub the banana slices with lemon juice to prevent browning. These recipes were infused using the same strain as last month, Raspberry Tart from Re-up Farms. I experimented, and only decarbed half the Cannabis before infusing. THC-A is not psychoactive, and I wanted to see if the experience was clearly different. I may have felt more relaxed than usual, but I did get pretty high and it was a perfectly fine experience. Next time, I am going with non-decarbed weed. I’ll keep you posted.

EDIBLE OF THE MONTH
LEMON MERINGUE CANNABIS JELLIES
DROPS
@DROP S CANDI ES DROP S CANDI ES.COM
I’ll be honest here, it was the brightly colored packaging that lured me in. Typically, I’m at the dispensary to load up on flower and concentrates, but as an afterthought, I’ll throw some edibles in my bag to have on hand at the house. For me, 5mg is plenty to send me into a deep afternoon nap, so I just grab whatever looks fun and expect it to work about as well as any other edible. Drops, with their playful tins in a rainbow of colors and strain choices selected to match the candy flavor, definitely hit the “fun” mark. I opted for the Active pack, 10 pieces of bright yellow lemon-flavored gummies infused with lemon meringue live resin at 5mg THC each. I tried one just to see what I was getting into. Softer than those super chewy gummy bears we grew up with, these Drops are still tough enough to keep their cute little cube shapes without the fear that they might melt into one 50mg edible on a warm day. Intensely flavored, just one tiny cube was enough for me to appreciate the nostalgic flavor of a sweet and sour lemon drop. You can almost put yourself in my shoes a couple of hours later. A gigantic grin on my face trying to figure out what had turned my entire mood around and which classic episode of “The Simpsons” to watch. “Oh, the Drops!” I exclaimed to no one in particular. The drowsy experience I normally shrug off had been replaced with a fullbody feeling of carefree enjoyment. By sourcing full-spectrum live Cannabis resin for the gummies, the folks at Drops can get extra specific with the desired effect. They use the myrcene dominant Grease Monkey strain paired with cherry for their Dreamy pack, and Bruce Banner with its spike of limonene at the center of their Creative orange jellies. Though this product line is centered around THC, they also offer a line of flavors with differing THC and CBD ratios such as the blueberry flavored and CBD-centric Relief pack. For this seasoned stoner, it’s an interesting feeling to get the same sort of effect from just one of these infused Drops that I would get from inhaling a halfgram joint on my lunch break. For those situations where you simply can’t step out and smoke, I think these are a fantastic alternative. Finding myself inclined to eat a few more during my downtime to see if I could shift my perspective that most edibles are simply for sleeping, I put a nice dent in the 10pack and found myself wearing sunglasses indoors, trying unsuccessfully to stifle a giggle. Where have these things been my whole life? Oh right, federally restricted.

STUMPTOWN COFFEE STRANGE MAGIC CASCARA SODA PAIRED WITH IDEAL CANNABIS WEDDING CAKE GELATO @STUMPTOWNCOFFEE | @IDEALCANNABIS
jul. 2021
omewhere between coffee and tea lies cascara. Also known as “coffee cherry tea,” cascara is brewed from the fruit that grows around the coffee bean. Though this coffee-cherry is typically discarded so we can get at that caffeine-laden bean in the middle, the fruit itself is pretty tasty. Stumptown Coffee discovered this unique beverage on their coffee sourcing trips and what started as a novel drink made to order in their cafes, has become available on your local grocer’s beverage shelf. Strange Magic is a lightly caffeinated, slightly carbonated cascara tea in a can, and it deserves some space in your cooler this summer. What makes Strange Magic so interesting is that it tastes nothing like coffee. Instead, at first sip you might get it confused with an Arnold Palmer. On closer inspection, juicy and more complex fruit flavors make an appearance. Plum and cherry at the forefront with flavors of orange marmalade and hibiscus, tart but not sour. Stumptown adds just enough sugar to brighten things up without coming close to being cloying. The surprisingly fruity profile is exactly why it pairs so well with the Wedding Cake Gelato cultivated by Ideal Cannabis. The dessert forward profile of the flower is an ideal complement to accentuate the subtle flavors in a can of Strange Magic. Together these two flavors and combined effects are an excellent way to kick off a lazy weekend. Wedding Cake and Gelato, two hugely popular cultivars, go together like, well, cake and ice cream. This expression is an equal combo of Gelato, with its creamy vanilla and toasted marshmallow aromas and of Wedding Cake, highlighting those diesel-rich notes with an earthy sweetness. Ideal Cannabis knocked this batch out of the park. The incredible bag appeal demands attention until the jar is cracked and then the aroma steals all of the focus. Loud with a capital “L” – this herb fills the room with a bakery thick scent. Know that there’s no subtle way to roll a joint, you’re going to catch the attention of anyone who enjoys the scent of good herb. The sticky flower rolls up easily and burns nicely to a fine white ash. In a joint, the flavor offers a taste of mouth-coating vanilla frosting with each draw. Even after a few hits, the flavor is there, rich and resinous. Follow that with a refreshing swig of Strange Magic for an enchanting combo of sweet and tart, balanced with a dank fruitiness. The sedating effect of the flower is balanced nicely with the hint of caffeine in the coffee cherry soda. Twenty minutes after finishing a joint and the effect is apparent, complete calm without the loss of focus often encountered with these ultra-relaxing cultivars. Together, the Strange Magic manages to offer enough pep to cut through what could be absolute couchlock. These two are a great match for kicking back and admiring the time you spent working on your backyard. Better yet, rocking softly in a hammock with a book you may or may not crack into. Both fresh and familiar, there’s something nice about combining these two and creating your own sense of magic from the comfort of your cooler.

When it comes to the history of hashish, the facts are as fascinating as the folklore. Hashish Smokers (1887) GAETANO PREVIATI
ISLAMIC ORIGINS
LEAFMAGAZINES.COM
It’s believed that the word hashish derives from the Arabic root word hasis, meaning dried grass or herb. The first historical records of hashish date back to the “Golden Age of Islam” in ancient Persia – sometime between the writing of the Koran in 632 and 900 CE. Unlike alcohol, which was forbidden by the Koran as a khmar (intoxicant), Cannabis was originally considered a medicine and therefore not prohibited. The earliest written reference to hashish appears to be in “The Book of Poisons” – a toxicology/astrology treatise by Iraqi alchemist Ibn Wahshiyya published in the 10th century. In it, Wahshiyya refers to a toxic concoction containing Cannabis extract and other aromatic herbs, which he claimed was lethal when inhaled. Another, more famous text from that period in which hashish is mentioned is the fabled “1001 Arabian Nights,” which even includes a story entitled “The Tale of the Hashish Eater.”
Sufi monks viewed hashish as a sacrament.
jul. 2021
THE SUFI The earliest group to embrace hashish were the Sufis – a mystical branch of Islam that arose during the 8th century. Once called “the hippies of the Arab world,” Sufi monks believed that hashish assisted in elevating consciousness to achieve communion with Allah. For them, eating hashish was, according to one Muslim critic, “an act of worship.” One Sufi legend even claimed that it was one of the sect’s founders, Shayk Haydar, who
first discovered hashish. According to the story, after 10 years of reclusivity in his mountaintop monastery, Haydar ventured into the desert, where he discovered a “sparkling” plant and ate it. He returned to the monastery in a euphoric state, shared the plant’s magical properties with his fellow monks, then swore them to secrecy about it. While there’s no evidence that Haydar actually made or used hashish, the Sufis did eventually embrace it as a sacrament. THE HASHASHIN Though Cannabis resin was referenced centuries earlier, the word “hashish” wasn’t reportedly seen in print until 1123 – in an Egyptian pamphlet accusing a group called the Nazari of being “hashish-eaters” (a derogatory term used to denote undesirables). Another mystical branch of Islam founded in 1090, the Nazari were based in a mountaintop fortress in northern Iran called Alamut Castle and ruled over by their founder, Hassan-i Sabbah – a.k.a. “The Old Man of the Mountain.” Sabbah created an elite squadron of warrior-spies called the Fidai, who he sent out on covert espionage and murder missions. The Fidai were allegedly so devoted to him that they’d Hassan-i Sabbah (above), and The Fidai at Alamut.
sacrifice their lives at his command. Sabbah allegedly brainwashed his fanatics by feeding them copious amounts of hashish – a practice that supposedly earned them their notorious nickname: Hashashin (Arabic for “hashish users”), from which we derive the modern word “assassin.” In fact, no evidence exists that they ever used hash; nevertheless, the legend stuck – thanks in part to the writings of Marco Polo. Though Genghis Khan’s armies killed off the Hashashin in 1256, they didn’t kill hashish’s appeal; on the contrary, many Arab historians credit the Mongols’ invasions – and the resulting Sufi refugees – for spreading hashish throughout Iraq, Syria, and Egypt during the 13th century. INTO EGYPT The first record of hashish in Egypt comes from a Spanish-born Muslim botanist named Ibn al-Baytar, who in 1227 observed Egyptian Sufis swallowing charas balls in Cairo. There was a park there called the Gardens of Kafur where Sufis and other poor stoners congregated, grew Cannabis and made hashish – that is, until 1266, when King al-Zahir Babar outlawed hashish, destroyed the gardens, and threatened anyone caught with it with prison and “de-teething.” Eventually, concerns over moral decline led Sunni authorities to declare hashish illegal under Islamic law, essentially condemning the Sufi as heretics. Regardless, hashish use continued to expand; it wasn’t until four centuries later, however, that it would make its mark on Europe. ENTRÉE FRANCE In 1798, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Egypt. Since alcohol was banned in the Muslim country, his soldiers had no access to wine and instead adopted hashish as their intoxicant of choice. Hashish smoking among the troops became such a problem that in October 1800, General Jacques-François Menou banned Cannabis across Egypt. But when the French troops were driven out by Anglo-Ottoman forces in 1801, they brought the hash back home with them. By that time, most French citizens had heard of hashish, thanks to Antoine Galland’s translation of “The 1001 Arabian Nights” published a century earlier. The stories sparked a romantic fascination with hashish in France’s collective imagination. Over the next two centuries, that love affair only grew – fueling a creative explosion that culminated in the formation Grand meeting room at Les of the infamous Club Club des Hashischins. des Hashischins. Founded in 1844, Les Club des Hashischins was a private social club in Paris where the literary, artistic, and intellectual elite of the day would gather to get high. Dressed in Arabic attire, they’d hold séances and drink coffee laced with a green paste called dawamesk made with butter, nuts, spices, and of course, hashish. FROM PRESCRIPTION TO PROHIBITION During the 19th century, medical research and experimentation with Cannabis flourished across Europe. Studies were written, compounds were extracted, and a number of hashish-derived remedies were formulated. But most medical professionals, still operating under old misconceptions that it
The counterculture movement of the 1960s introduced hashish to the New World. induced violence and insanity, avoided studying hashish. This kind of misinformation helped bring an end to the burgeoning medical marijuana field and usher in the new age of global prohibition instituted in the 20th century. While most associate America as the architect of pot prohibition, it was actually Egypt that originally led the charge for its international embargo. Both Egypt and the US attempted (unsuccessfully) to add hashish to the list of prohibited drugs outlined in the League of Nations’ International Opium Conventions of 1912 and 1925. Nevertheless, by the late 1920s, nearly 60 countries had outlawed hashish. THE HIPPIE TRAIL The counterculture movement of the 1960s introduced hashish to Eden Hash Center—a popular the New World. Starting in the late ‘50s, thousands of beatniks and stop on The Hippie Trail. hippies embarked on pilgrimages to the great hashish capitals of WORLD OF CANNABIS MUSEUM the East in search of primo smoke – rechristening the old Silk Road as “The Hippie Trail.” Some, like Travis Ashbrook of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, smuggled tons of hash back to the US to power the psychedelic revolution. Others brought the art of hash making into new areas, like Morocco; though Cannabis had been grown in the region for centuries, until then it had only been smoked with tobacco. In the decades that followed, however, Morocco’s Rif Valley would become the world’s largest producer of hashish. Just as the Hippie Trail was subsiding, Amsterdam – which had recently undergone its own social revolution – became the new hub for hashish. Hash from all over the world was smuggled in and sold at the city’s hundreds of Cannabis coffeeshops. It was amidst this happening hash scene that another former Hippie Trail traveler by the name of Mila Jansen invented a revolutionary new resin collection method that used ice water rather than hand-scraping or dry sieving – creating the first ever “bubble hash” (aka ice hash, full-melt) and earning her the honorific “Hash Queen.”
Hashish assortment lithograph (1970).
HASHISH TODAY Though still widely popular in WORLD OF CANNABIS MUSEUM Europe, demand for hashish in the US has declined dramatically over the past few decades – due largely to the rise of the more potent hydrocarbon concentrates (dabs). In fact, you’d be hard-pressed (pun intended) to find any traditional hash for sale in US dispensaries, with one notable exception: the old-school hashish made by Frenchy Cannoli. Like those old Hippie Trail pilgrims, Frenchy spent his youth traveling to many of the world’s great hash centers and mastering the classic techniques, which he now teaches to a new generation with his “Lost Art of the Hashishin” workshop series. Thanks to the passion of master hashishin like him, hashish’s history will undoubtedly live on for centuries more.

here she was, standing over a fresh dog poop, looking down upon a thin strip of sidewalk grass along a quiet suburban road holding her only bag, bulging and tied off. The Rhodesian Ridgeback at the end of the leash, quite unfortunately, just unleashed an unexpected second helping. To leave or not to leave – that is the question that I ask of Steve. Maybe she has a favorite uncle named Steve, I don’t know. It rhymed. Is there anyone in America who doesn’t know someone named Steve? It doesn’t matter. Regardless, she is faced with a conundrum. You find a small stash on the bathroom floor. You scan the room, concluding that six of them are potential contenders. The nugs are juicy. Do you announce to the patrons of Patron that one of them has potentially lost their imperative sack, or do you hightail it out of the parking lot and fill your coughers? You scan the motley crew for bloodshot eyes while the dank scent effervesces through the pants pocket to the nostrils like a trail from Pepe Le Pew’s tail. It is as if the universe itself is checking your pulse to determine if the moral compass is deserving of her positive karma, and worthy of continuing to inhabit her fruitful loins of perfect symmetry. Every one of us, at least once in our lives, has been apprised to this test. You clutch the bag and address this reckoning by announcing to the entire venue that someone has lost their weed and you are ready to bestow it to the rightful owner. A man comes to you and admits that he, indeed, had dropped the bag and hadn’t noticed until that moment, upon realizing that his pocket is empty. He takes the Cannabis gratefully. He offers to smoke a bowl with you outside, to which you politely accept. You have made a new friend. His name is Steve.
