Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up this terpy issue of the Leaf! I’ve watched the world of dabs evolve from sketchy backyard open-blasting and glowing-hot titanium globs into a huge segment of the industry, powering a diverse array of ways to get supremely baked.

9

When I started the Leaf in 2010, the medical community really only had flower – and hash was more legendary than reality. As the years went on, I witnessed science and innovation meeting stoner ingenuity and creating a constant wave of new products, delivering specific cannabinoid and terpene effects that were the subject of dreams and “what ifs” a decade ago. With that said, it’s an honor and a treat to taste all of the different terps and concentrate styles represented in this issue. From RSO/FECO to live resin and my personal favorite – the solventless rosin hash and carts – there are a million ways to get baked in 2022, and I’m endlessly grateful for that. As someone who has been caught smoking weed so many times (from the law to my parents and professors), the idea of hitting a ‘pen’ that produces fruity clouds of weed-soaked wonder minus the aroma, is nothing short of magical.

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL APPRECIATE THE EFFORT AND INNOVATION THAT HAS LED TO THE CONCENTRATES ON THE SHELF AT OUR LOCAL DISPENSARY.

I think we should all appreciate the effort and innovation that has led to the concentrates on the shelf at our local dispensary. So as you puff on your pen or Puffco, or take a red hot glowie to the dome – remember how lucky we are to live in a time with legal weed. As the world continues to trend toward chaos and disconnection, we share a plant that brings humans together, connecting us with love and terps in a way no other substance can.

I truly believe we wouldn’t have the war in Ukraine (or anywhere) if our world leaders would slow down, get high and connect with their counterparts and constituents – instead of leading from on high (while sober or using alcohol or pharmaceuticals). If Putin chose powerful pot instead of power, where might the world be? Sadly, even weed can only do so much. But I did review 34 cartridges over Father’s Day weekend … and got so high that for the first time in 15 years, my dad asked me if I had taken any funny drugs for the weekend. I just laughed and said, “Nope, just a lot of dabs.”

CANADIAN MMJ PATIENTS SUBSTITUTING CANNABIS FOR OPIOIDS

GERMANY SET TO LEGALIZE CANNABIS FOR ADULT USE

G

ermany is about to legalize the sale of adult-use Cannabis. The historic move is likely to increase pressure on other European governments to follow suit. German authorities plan to have legislation ready later this year allowing licensed shops to sell Cannabis to adults. They’re not wasting any time, either, as the health ministry began expert hearings on the issue June 14. More than 200 representatives from medical, legal and other fields took part in the hearings.

A

new survey showed nearly half of 2,697 Canadian patients with medical Cannabis access said they substitute marijuana for their prescription drugs. According to the “Journal of Cannabis Research,” half of those who acknowledged this said that the drugs they do so for are opioids. Meanwhile, a substantial number of patients are using Cannabis to minimize their alcohol intake as well. Interestingly, the survey also showed nearly one in three patients didn’t tell their primary physician that they substitute marijuana for prescriptions.

THEY’RE NOT WASTING ANY TIME, EITHER. A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF PATIENTS ARE USING CANNABIS TO MINIMIZE THEIR ALCOHOL INTAKE.

A Kentucky State Trooper pulled over Harrell, 28, at 9:58 a.m. on May 12. Traveling southbound on I-75, the trooper said he stopped him for following a vehicle too closely. Trooper Jesse Owens claims he “upon stop observed [the] odor of marijuana” from Harrell’s 2020 Honda Pilot, according to the citation. Harrell ”admitted to being in possession of marijuana and produced a small amount from his sweatpants,” according to Owens. The trooper then searched the vehicle, which Harrell said was a rental. The officer found “three pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags” in a backpack in the backseat. He charged Harrell with trafficking less than five pounds of marijuana.

URBAN FARMACY Portland A charming shop welcoming for all

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

12

This month I got the chance to visit with the Urban Farmacy team and hang out with them at the shop, where I quickly fell in love with the establishment and learned a ton at the same time.

The experience began with an ultra-cozy and inviting waiting area, complete with soft lighting, comfortable high-back leather chairs, and calming instrumental music that drifted throughout the room and gave a “highend day spa” type of vibe. This all sets the stage perfectly for what awaits beyond the waiting room – a keenly-organized showroom bursting with Cannabis goodies of all kinds. A world of Cannabis offerings unfolded before us as we entered. Glass-topped counters were lined with meticulously-placed rows of flower, with each jar featuring a color-coded card for distinguishing between sativa, indica and hybrid, as well as cannabinoid and terpene testing, and the farm that cultivated the Cannabis. Large glass cases hold the many concentrate offerings, as well topicals, tinctures, FECO – you name it, they have it. The organization here makes it easy for customers to be informed and browse the selection at the same time. Introducing ourselves to Georgia and Joey, the budtenders on duty during the time of our visit, it wasn’t long before we realized that we were working with some serious professionals. Knowledgeable and relatable, Georgia led us to some seriously fire, top shelf flower, while Joey directed us to the best-of-the-best of their concentrates. They talked us through

juLY 2022

their topicals as well, which was an impressively vast selection – one I’ve only seen in much larger stores. As our visit continued, we noticed a book named “Tiny Little Plant” by Madeline Derby McKee, and the staff explained that it is a children’s book about the benefits of CBD. This brought all the good vibes together, truly establishing that the warm and inviting feeling we’d been experiencing at Urban Farmacy was indeed imbued with deep care and a true heart for Cannabis. Hands down, this is a shop you can bring your family to – both grandmas and kinda-crazy uncles will find this gem of a weed shop charming. We wrapped up our visit with the purchase of a noteworthy version of Jilly Bean from Hug Farms, and Georgia’s pick of Platinum Garlic Cookies by LOWD – which just might be the best we’ve ever smoked. Any time you come across a dispensary with a street address of 420, you should probably check it out. Lucky for us, Urban Farmacy had both the address and the attitude we were looking for – an adorable little red barn that’s literally full of heart and fine Cannabis products. It was such a blessing to feel their dedication to the plant and its capacity to improve the quality of life for their patients and customers. Make sure to stop in and inquire about earning 20% off your purchase by donating to community food banks, too – so you can give back and get high at the same time. What could feel better than that?

“I LOVE THIS PLANT AND I’M EXCITED EVERY DAY TO SHOW IT OFF TO PEOPLE.” FOR OUR BUDTENDER OF THE MONTH feature for the Concentrates Issue, we looked for someone with the highest level of knowledge in the rosin category – an aficionado of solventless, if you will. And after spending some time chatting with Sean Boshaw at Cookies Eugene, we can confirm not just his high level of knowledge about concepts such as resin head morphology, but also his love for all things Cannabis.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY? I have worked three months now at this dispensary, but worked at TJ’s Organics prior. I have also worked with Arise Canna, but altogether a few years now [in the industry]. I love this plant and I am excited every day to show it off to people. DO YOU PREFER SIX-STAR OVER BATTERED ROSIN? I just smoke rosin because there is no such thing as six-star, because everything has been pressed. From what I have learned over the years, six-star is hand-pressed full melt, like the hash you get fresh out of the freeze dryer. So once they press the heads with a machine, to me, they lack the effects that the full melt produces. But I can really get down with anything solventless, as long as it does not mix spectrums.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE COOKIES BRAND IS FITTING INTO THE OREGON MARKET? Eventually acceptance will be there once people see the new flower mixed with nostalgic brands that they are used to seeing on shelves elsewhere. All in all, Cookies only sells flower that meets the Cookies standard, and the bar is set pretty high. IF YOU COULD MAKE A CHANGE IN OUR INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? I would simply raise the limits of concentrates per person per day, and not for the reason that most would. I believe people have had to move to concentrates for whatever reason, and the allowances seem to be low both medically and recreationally. Not to mention the expense for getting your medical card.

patient of the month

CANNABIS FOR A BETTER LIFE RAYANN CALLS HERSELF a traveling gnome because she grew up as the child of a Marine. They moved around a lot and she says that added to her social anxiety. Rayann and her wife eventually settled down in Eugene and became active in the medical and recreational scene. She considers herself a reserved person, but outspoken for equality and patient’s rights.

WHEN DID YOU START USING CANNABIS?

I started smoking Cannabis in 1996 as a teeneager at local gatherings, and quickly realized the benefits I was receiving from smoking. By my early 20s I was using Cannabis medicinally daily. I lived my life for 20 years using the alternative market to ease my ailments. It wasn’t until 2013 when we moved back to the Pacific Northwest that I became a medical patient.

WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT USING CANNABIS? An accident left me with two titanium

plates and nine screws in my leg, and on Christmas Eve 2019 I was diagnosed with Glaucoma. I’m a firm believer that my continued use of Cannabis throughout the years slowed its progression. I would consume Cannabis for migraines that would leave me incapacitated. Anxiety is a bitch to live with – often it makes meeting new people a challenge for me. I have to be constantly aware of my surroundings, such as lighting and noise levels, to prevent migraines from creeping up on me. Since being diagnosed I’ve definitely noticed a change in my vision.

Rayann McMillan Cingle “on Christmas Eve 2019 I was diagnosed with Glaucoma. I’m a firm believer that my continued use of Cannabis throughout the years slowed its progression.” juLY 2022

WHAT ARE YOUR PREFERRED METHODS FOR MEDICATING? My go-to method is good ole flower – there’s nothing like rolling a joint! I’ve tried many strains … I have a journal that’s simply a list of strains, the effects they had on me … until I was able to whittle down what worked best. Strains like Durban Poison have always been my go-to for what works best … I only trust a few farms with my flower needs, because as a patient, it’s hard for me to risk my money on getting an unpleasant strain. I also love edibles, or as I call them medibles, because let’s face it – everything we eat is edible, but not everything is medicated. … I prefer to make my own, but occasionally I love a good Wyld or Elbes edible. I enjoy a great Cannabis oil – I’ve tried several companies but my #1 go-to is White Label Extracts … their collaborations with Where’s My Bike by Benson Arbor, the Forbidden Fruit or GMO from Wee, to anything Geek Farms or Doghouse!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO DO OUTSIDE OF THE CANNABIS SPACE? I love spending time with

my pup Mr. Buddie Ray Gump – my 10-yearold diabetic chihuahua/pug mix, aka my ‘chug.’ Hobbies include traveling to new and exciting places with my wife so we can experience new things together. I love my family and friends. Camping and sitting round the campfire are huge for me – especially on the coast, because there’s nothing like that beach life.

“WE’RE ALL ABOUT THE FLAVOR! THE GREASY, WET ROSIN IS REALLY ATTRACTIVE.”

DAVID COX IMPERIAL SOLVENTLESS

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

Tell us a little about how Imperial Solventless got its start. I had started growing and

processing hash in 2006, eight years before Imperial got its start. We were always going to pursue ice water hash. The original plan was to build out the solventless phase after we got the BHO going. Then, last minute, we saw that the market was headed toward solventless and we had a pretty major pivot. All of that was just fueled by our passion for great hash – which ended up working out great for us.

What do you feel is the most important when you’re making rosin and have some control over the texture and taste? We’re all about the

flavor! The greasy, wet rosin is really attractive. I think that’s what the market likes and that texture is very visually appealing. A good example is the Chocolate Thai Pie from Noble Farms.

It’s Chocolate Thai x Grape Pie bred by Cannarado. Big grape flavor with an incredible effect. That one hits on all fronts. I personally love that consistency. As a hash maker, I’m sure you’re pretty specific when it comes to quality control. What gear are you using to dab these days? I’m old school.

I have a nice rig, but I don’t use a thermometer most of the time. I do the cold start tech where I throw the rosin in, put my cap on, and just gently heat it. It’s usually between 60 and 80 seconds at most, depending on how big of a dab it is and whatnot. I’m mostly going low-temp to focus on flavor. Tell us how you go about selecting material.

You know, we are all about quality, first and foremost. Still, it’s got to yield a certain amount

to be worth it. So we might do a test wash if we aren’t sure. But, we do process a lot of low-yield stuff. I’d say between the one and three percent range is where most of our material lands, and that’s worth it to us. Even with the higher yielders, if the resin quality isn’t what we are looking for, we’ll move on. Your team is Eugene-based, right? Do you mostly work with farms in that area? We are!

Some of our best supporters are in Eugene. In the beginning, I was a little nervous working with folks so close to home, because this is right in our backyard. Now we’re a lot more confident with our process and we’ve built great relationships with quality producers. Being in Eugene gives us access to the whole state, so most importantly we just want to work with the folks who are doing the best work. Quality in, quality out.

A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

Ontario’s Treasure Valley Cannabis is more than just a dispensary – it’s a hash-making company giving its customers an up close and personal view of the artform via their onsite lab. We sat down with Owen Spencer, Keegan Mangen and Chase Muromoto to get a closer look at their operation. 560 SE 12TH AVE, ONTARIO, OR | TREASUREVALLEYCANNABIS.COM | @TREASUREVALLEYCANNACO @TREASUREVALLEYSFINEST | 9AM-10PM MON-THURS | 8AM-10PM FRI-SUN.

JULY 2022

Talk about what it’s like sourcing flower for the shop, and also sourcing just for the hash lab. Chase: Many of the farms we’ve worked with since we’ve opened, and they’re still on the shelves. Growers like Bonafide and Capital have been with us from the very start. Capital’s controlled greenhouse grows are producing fantastic flower for hash, so it really has been a great partnership.

Owen: Through the shop, being involved in a lot of the purchasing and vendor relations, I was able to build good relationships with the people and farms that went above and beyond. Being a connoisseur myself, and someone who smokes a lot of hash, I already had an idea of the people we wanted to work with. It all goes back to that starting material. If we’re acquiring just phenomenal, fantastic starting material, let’s be honest – it really does make our job even easier. To have that luxury of producing hash there on the premises – that has to be exciting sharing that with your customers. Keegan: Yeah, 100%. Having this on-site lab where people can see it and understand what’s going on has been great. For our budtenders, too. For them to have that knowledge when people ask questions, they feel confident and comfortable breaking it down. It helps customers over that first kind of hump of unsureness. When they’re like, ‘That looks interesting, but I don’t know too much about it.’

“Having this on-site lab where people can see it and understand what's going on has been great.” ~ Keegan Mangen

How do you encourage the dispensary clientele to try your solventless products? Owen: Offering hash at different price points and options in different styles and consistencies is helpful. I consume a lot of hash, I don’t necessarily want to only consume it in one form. Sure, batters are great, but I also like jams and full-melt. We also do carts, we’re eventually doing some edibles and things in the shop. Just giving people options. It’s nice to have some variety, right? Do you feel that the average customer is more aware of solventless hash this year? Owen: A couple of years ago, there were very few of those types of products. You had a lot of shops that didn’t have a lot of solventless stuff. I feel like now that’s finally changing.

Keegan: We’re definitely seeing a shift in that direction. I think education is finally there. As a guy that has been smoking mainly solventless for nearly a decade, it’s good to see it come back into the spotlight. It takes more care to produce a solventless product, so it needs that extra shine. While rosin is really hot right now, I think that soon you’re going to start seeing even the highest quality hash more accessible to people. You know, I’m seeing more melt available at dispensaries now and that’s something that I thought was very far away. I think it’s eventually going to be kind of like the upper echelon of the concentrated market. We hope we’re bringing things to the market that people appreciate at all styles and price points – that everyone gets to enjoy these different consistencies. It’s something we’re really passionate about.

The company farm and hydrocarbon extraction lab sit outside Springfield, inhabiting a property with beautiful country backdrops and rolling hills. When driving through the gates, one is greeted by a large, quadruple-peaked production facility and neighboring processing lab. The plants are flowered in two expansive indoor sections of this facility, brought to full maturity under the sunlight of a greenhouse roof with plenty of supplemental lighting. MAVERICK FILMMAKER, actor, author, comedian and comic book writer Kevin Smith is best known for his hit movies “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy” and “Jersey Girl.” He also happens to be instantly recognizable since he played the iconic character Silent Bob in many of his own films.

“I CAN COUNT ON ONE HAND THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I SMOKED WEED FROM BIRTH TO AGE 38. AT AGE 38, I WORKED WITH SETH ROGEN. THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING.” juLY 2022

ince so many of his films’ characters are Cannabis users, it may surprise you to know that Smith actually didn’t start consuming it until 2009. But that’s the truth. Smith told MTV in 2011 that he credits Seth Rogen (whom he worked with on the film “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) with being the person who made him into a “stoner.” Smith said that he and Rogen smoked weed in the editing room while cutting the movie, and that it helped with creativity and getting “fear” out of the equation when it came to making creative decisions. In the interview, he also credits weed with making him more productive. In 2016, he told Thrillist, “I can count on one hand the amount of times I smoked weed from birth to age 38. At age 38, I worked with Seth Rogen. That changed everything. I was like, ‘This guy is a multi-tasker. He can do a zillion things at once and he is fucking blazed all the time. He gets along with everybody and he has got no stress in his life. The dude is just a zen pool of calm.’” Smith also talked about how Cannabis has been medicinally beneficial to him, saying, “I don’t drink. Some people have booze. Some people have medications. I don’t have any of that shit, but weed allows me to get out of my own fucking head and off of my ass, and relate to people better.” Since many of us have had the same experience with the plant, it’s refreshing to hear from a filmmaker as highly regarded as Smith on this important issue.

Fortunately, that’s not where this story ends for Smith – like your friends here at Leaf Magazines, he’s also on a mission to normalize Cannabis for the mainstream. “I am glad that I became a stoner late in life. Age 38,” said Smith. “I was never a fucking stoner prior to age 38. Now, I am a fucking born-again stoner. Weed is not a ‘thing,’ really. It is not. Once Colorado and Washington were legal, everybody is like, ‘Oh, it is not that big a deal.’ When I was a kid, it was like, ‘Fucking just say no, and it’s evil, and fucking it will lead to crack cocaine and shit.’” In 2013, shortly after early U.S. legalization in Colorado and Washington, Smith appeared on Canadian television in Toronto on a morning show, touting his film “Yoga Hosers.” The interviewer posed the question, “What’s the secret of how you get things done?” Smith told the host, “Well, I’m a huge stoner … but a productive one.” Smith then went on to extol the virtues of how Cannabis has helped his productivity. He noted that he wakes and bakes and enjoys a “THCmanaged day.” Fast forward to today and it seems like the taboo is slowly fading away from the stigmas associated with Cannabis use in the United States. Smith’s home state of New Jersey legalized it in 2020, with recreational sales beginning last summer – and yes, Smith is yet again using his platform to promote the plant – with the plot of upcoming film “Clerks III” set inside of a recreational shop (owned by Jay and Silent Bob, of course).

HEMP INDUSTRY

Jerry Whiting

suggested we rent farmland five doors from his house and grow hemp together. We spent last year reviving land that hadn't been farmed recently. We got a late start and I didn’t know the local soil, water or weather. Let’s just say there was a steep learning curve. The good news is that we were able to install drip lines to irrigate the field and planted a clover cover crop in the fall to outcompete the weeds, as well as improve the soil. Bonus: Our landlord Gino caught the hemp bug and has been an active partner in our hemp farming venture. This year, 2022, we’re definitely more organized. I think of our small farm as an experimental R&D plot that sells enough to break even on licensing and testing fees, with enough left over for our beer fund too. This summer we planted the same three hemp fiber cultivars in both New Mexico and Washington state. I’m looking forward to harvesting the data almost as much as harvesting the fiber itself. This retired software nerd is running everything out of a Google Sheet, collecting both quantitative grow data and subjective results from papermakers like Jonas. Obviously western Washington and eastern New Mexico are as different as can be, but that is an advantage when comparing the three cultivars against each other. What we glean from our data will prepare us to expand the number of cultivars we grow moving forward. Our goal is to publish and share much of our work to inspire and guide others. Growing hemp for fiber is only the first step in making hemp products. Don’t get me wrong, I grow and process hemp for multiple products including tinctures, pre-rolls and topicals sold under the LeBlanc CNE label. But this summer we’re growing hemp for fiber. I’m putting my money where my mouth is, planting what I preach. Over the last three years I’ve grown hemp for fiber and two years ago, I reconnected with a childhood friend on Facebook rather serendipitously. SECRET LEMONS

JULY 2022 july

S

When it came time to choose our Strain of the Month, we couldn’t help but highlight the flower behind some of our favorite hash.

CULTIVATED BY ARCHIVE A R C H I V E S E E D B A N K .C O M A R C H I V E D I S P E N S A RY.C O M @ARCHIVESEEDBANK @ A R C H I V E N U R S E RY

Secret Lemons by the Archive crew is one of the most pungent and unique cultivars we’ve come across – and it especially stands out as rosin – so it’s no wonder that the crew has been bringing home awards with it up and down the West Coast. We talked to Adam Bush, head of Archive’s in-house garden, about what makes this plant so special. “Mostly it’s a pain in the ass,” he jokes. It’s not exactly an ideal flower for extraction. The resin has a greasy quality that insists on the coldest temps when working with it. Collection is a mess and washing the bags that separates the trichomes from everything else is an added chore after every run. “We’re soaking and cleaning bags the moment we’re done with the wash,” Adam reveals. “It’s just all worth it. There’s nothing else like it.” Secret Lemons has a pedigree that nearly demands a white board and a 10-minute back story. In lieu of that, here are the highlights: Created by renowned Cannabis breeder Fletcher of Archive Seed Bank, a citrus heavy Lemon Peel was crossed with a male from the original Moonbow stock. The result is a cultivar that has all of the bag appeal of top tier cookie hybrids, with a surprisingly true lemon flavor. This flower earned the moniker “secret” when Adam grew it out in the garden without a nametag, to get an unadulterated opinion from the crew. As the flower developed, they started referring to the nameless plant in the corner with the heavenly scent as “the secret.” This one stuck around. It wasn’t long before they were filling rows with Secret Lemons. The buds are bright green with a pleasant density, but we aren’t really here for the bag appeal. The scent on the other hand, is off the charts. So many cultivars in the past have claimed to smell like lemons, but this one actually does. The base note is pure lemon essential oil with all of the woody funk of an actual lemon grove – and just as pungent. Adding it to the grinder reveals big, boozy, limoncello flavors alongside that first whiff from a bag of marshmallows. Top all of that off with hints of cedar and pine sap, and you have a complex citrus flavor that impresses from the moment we crack the jar to the last hit of the joint. There are big trade-offs to running cultivars like this in the garden when you have higheryielding strains that don’t keep you working late in the hash lab. Adam says it best: “The only reason it’s worth it for us to wash it is because it tastes so damn good.” Let’s call it a labor of love … and lucky for us, the crew at Archive’s Portland dispensary keeps this one in rotation. There’s a good chance you’ll catch either the flower or rosin on the shelf while you’re there – just don’t expect it to be there for long.

THE CONCENTRATES ISSUE

LEAF NATION G U I D E

CONCENTRATES 101 When our neolithic ancestors first discovered the nutritious qualities of Cannabis seeds and began to forage for them regularly, they quickly noticed how sticky their fingers would get when they broke apart the flowers. It is from this sticky beginning that humans learned about Cannabis resin and began the process of refining and concentrating it into what we now know as hash. While generally speaking “hash” can refer to any number of concentrated resin products derived from the Cannabis plant, in today’s modern world we have developed a wide array of concentrated resin products that are worth understanding.

S T A R T I N G M AT E R I A L

COMMON CANNABIS CONCENTRATE CONSISTENCIES

Fire in, fire out. The quality and cure of Cannabis being turned into concentrates.

FRESH FROZEN FLOWER

44

Generally labeled as ‘live’ – flowers cut and flash frozen immediately after harvest. The quick cut and freeze time captures the resin at the point of harvest and is made directly from the fresh frozen resin. If the flower’s harvest was timed correctly, then this yields an extremely flavorful concentrate very true to the aroma of the living flower itself.

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

DRIED FLOWER Flower that has gone through the normal drying process, but generally not the curing process. Many concentrates can be cured after extraction, and therefore many companies do not cure the resin beforehand.

BIOMASS Primarily in the hemp industry, but also in large scale Cannabis companies. The waste plant material that accumulates in the harvest supply chain and typically added to edibles or topicals, but sometimes in lower quality concentrates and cartridges.

SHATTER

PULL ‘N’ SNAP/TAFFY

BUDDER/BADDER

HONEYCOMB

Hard, flat and glass-like. Very common due to their relatively cheap price point and ease of use. Rigid oils that break apart like glass into chunks and can be dabbed or added to a bowl.

Similar to shatter, but instead of breaking apart they stretch in a manner similar to caramel or taffy candy. Slightly more difficult to work with due to its sticky nature, but can be dabbed, mixed into bowls, and are commonly rolled into snakes and placed into joints and blunts.

Oils that have not undergone the process of winterization – meaning that the fats, waxes and lipids of the plant still remain in the product. This creates a thick, moist and creamy oil that requires a tool to work with and is most commonly dabbed.

A dry and dense oil that crumbles to the touch and is relatively less sticky than most concentrates. Often takes on a honeycomb or Swiss cheese-like structure and is generally more rare in the market.

SUGAR

DIAMONDS

SAUCE

Semi-crystalline oil that resembles an incomplete syrup or a thick, wet sugar substance. Typically dabbed and requires a dab tool to use. Most oils will age into a sugar as the THCa will crystalize over time.

Pure THCa crystals that have been allowed to form from pure Cannabis distillates. These achieve the highest potency of THCa, but generally lack any other type of terpene or cannabinoid. Often mixed with terpene-rich sauces and dabbed.

Liquid oils left over as the THCa crystalizes out of solution. Typically very terpenerich, flavorful and fragrant. Usually vaped in a cartridge or used as a dipping sauce for more solid dabs. Generally the most difficult texture to work with.

WHOLE PLANT EXTRACT Also known as RSO, whole plant extract has not undergone any type of refinement process. Deep green and almost black in color. Can be eaten straight, but often mixed with food or formulated into edibles. Robust and highly medicinal, this product is not often dabbed.

SOLVENTLESS The resin is collected by mechanical means rather than chemical.

CHARAS

DRY SIFT

ICE WATER HASH

Created by running one’s hands along living plants in a field. Ripe and sticky trichome heads stick and accumulate over time, and the resin is then stuck together into larger masses that can be smoked on their own or mixed with flower.

Raw resin heads in their natural form. Using fine micron bags and screens, resin heads are knocked off the plant and sifted into a form that looks like a fine beach sand. Generally mixed with a smoking herb, but can also be dabbed.

Utilizes cold water to knock off and collect the resin heads, rather than dry force. Plant matter is mixed with ice in large mixing containers and then filtered through micron bags to collect the resin heads. The hash is then dried to reveal the raw resin heads, then pressed and refined further, but can be smoked as is.

TEMPLE BALL Hand-pressed hash that’s been heated and rolled into spheres with an airtight oxidized coating. These balls are then aged to allow for slow chemical processes to occur which cure the resin and elevate the product. This process produces a terpene unique to hash called hashishene.

FLOWER ROSIN Raw flower that is squished under a press and through a fine micron mesh bag. Generally contains contaminants from the plant material itself, but is preferred by some flower lovers due to its purity.

HASH ROSIN Raw, sifted resin heads placed in a micron bag and pressed to squish out the oil under controlled amounts of heat and pressure. Captures the most pure resin possible, as it leaves behind the waxy coating of the trichome. Typically yields the highest quality resin concentrate product possible.

BASED IN Washington state, this side hustle from Greg “G” Martinez – a brand ambassador of the renowned Smokey Point Productions – has turned into a craft that’s on the level of some of the greatest art forging around. Just like a replica of a famous painting, or an illustration that’s a remarkable facsimile to an American dollar bill, the onlooker will find themselves in awe of the similarity … barely able to discern between the real thing and the fake. But this is more than just faking the gooey-love-puddy that we stoners regale in a glass saucer and turning it into an eye-catching pendant. There’s a flossy element to it – a way of posting up by dangling your enthusiasm for high-end hash straight off the neck for all to witness, all the while accentuating your look. It’s jewelry, yes – but it is also advocacy for acceptance and education in a way. After all, most of the world still could not explain the differences in consistencies from diamonds to rosin. And speaking of diamonds, he’ll be upping his game with jewel-encrusted and gold versions in the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Greg is beginning to work with rappers, celebrities, artists and companies with brands (with some of them even using his work for their packaging in varying states). He will admit that the technique is not new – all hand-crafted with epoxy, ceramic, glass and other materials – and that it’s not his invention. Others around the social media world were either early pioneers of creating these, or early adopters of the craft. Either way, the cat is out of the bag and this dude has got a lead in the race. LET’S FACE IT: Puffco’s Peak forever changed the world of Cannabis concentrate consumption as we knew it. And if you’re as reliant on it as I am for your daily dabs, you’re likely looking for ways to maximize its functionality and ease of use. Introducing the Hot Knife and the Journey Bag – two accessories that are affordable and essential to expressing your Peak’s highest potential.

DABBING TOOLS OF THE TRADE AN ULTRA-MODERN TAKE on the old-school, do-it-yourself method of heating hash from which it takes its name, the Hot Knife is an electronic dab tool that does one simple but incredibly useful thing: It heats your dab to precisely the temperature needed for it to drip off the tool’s ceramic tip and into your Peak chamber without causing it to vaporize – eliminating the messy, AVAILABLE annoying chore of trying to scrape IN BLACK the sticky extract off into the botOR INDIGLO tom (or heaven forbid the side!) INCLUDES USB-C of the chamber. Simply hold down CHARGING the button and three seconds later, CORD $59.99 ta-da – your dab is in the bowl and ready to smoke.

FOR DABBERS ON THE GO, nothing beats Puffco’s new Journey Bag. Think of it as a padded purse for your Peak that resembles a low-slung gun holster (though far less menacing). Made of durable, water-repellent nylon, this stylish black shoulder sling features four main compartments: the Peak pocket, which keeps your device easily accessible and upright so the water in your glass attachment doesn’t spill out; a large storage pocket for other essential items, inside of which are two smaller pockets (including a thin one to slide your dab tool into); a cushioned screen-safe phone pocket; and coolest of all (literally), a small, thermal-lined “chill pocket” at the bottom that’s equipped with a tiny freezer pack to keep your jars of concentrate cool. It also features an adjustable strap with a magnetic buckle and a slip-proof pad under the base. Whether hiking through the woods, strolling the beach at sunset, trekking around town or cruising around a Cannabis festival, the Journey Bag is perfect for keeping your Peak portable and protected. ONCE THE WORLD got tired of taking hot dabs, BLACK AND LIMITED stoners began to innovate. The original way we could EDITION COLORS tell if a banger or titanium nail was too hot, was to AVAILABLE. $249.99 hold a finger an inch or so away and go off of feeling. Needless to say that is not only a safety hazard, but also kind of archaic. I mean, we are smoking out of pipes that have five-figure price tags – why not make the dabbing experience a little more sophisticated? The Dab Rite is an infrared thermometer that tells you the exact temperature of your banger, nail, swing-arm, or whatever surface you are dabbing off of. The first thing you’ll want to do is set the material of your banger, with options including quartz and opaque quartz for those extra-heady worked pieces. Next you can set your temperature – and play with the flexible arm that enables you to place it at any angle underneath your banger – where it’ll read the temperature and display it on the small screen of the device. You’ll be able to watch the temperature decrease until it reaches the number you have set it to, and it’ll beep and flash when it’s time for you to dab (you can choose to silence it as well). Hands down, the Dab Rite completely changed the game for me – ending the days of burning my throat with hot dabs and ensuring I can actually taste the flavors I am chasing with dabbing concentrates. Thanks to this device, my precious terps are finally safe. DABRITE.COM | @THEDABRITE

A dabber running off of AAA batteries in the handle, it features a detachable metal tool and can literally tell you the exact weight of the concentrate you have scooped onto the end of it. The process is simple: Place the dabber on a flat surface, turn it on, scoop your concentrate, and put it back on the same flat surface. The digital screen will read the exact weight of the concentrate down to double digits. After testing out the dabber versus a traditional scale, it consistently weighed the correct amount and was more accurate than a single-digit scale. The DigiTül absolutely pushes the envelope for concentrate accessories into an exciting new realm, developing a tool that’s sure to find its way into the hands of many looking to fine tune their dabbing experience. THE CONNOISSEUR CONSUMER Discussing Higher Level Dab Techniques with Adam Lee Simpson @simp.lee.adam Born from the need to judge multiple entries in a short duration of time, Simpson has created what he calls the “bloom dab” – his way of assessing how robust and satisfying a particular concentrate is. The first step is to warm your banger enough to melt the concentrate, but not enough to burn your skin. Next, breathe in the aromatics as the concentrate melts into a thin film, using your senses to pick up on subtleties, both good and bad. Then (and this is where the technique becomes more advanced) the goal is to try to feel out how long those flavors last under the light heat you’ve given the banger. “The flavor will peak,” Simpson explains. “I call this the ‘Bloom Curve.’” “Concentrates higher in sesquiterpene to monoterpene [ratios] will have a wider bloom curve than more monoterpene to sesquiterpene,” Simpson speculates. After 30-60 seconds of sussing out the bouquet of the concentrate, if there are no weird or off-putting aromatics, the next step is to consume the concentrate by applying a very light re-heat. This technique is not unlike when sommeliers and cicerones aerate the wines and beers they’re about to consume by swirling and inhaling them before consumption in order to help analyze them.

“BEYOND TAKING YOUR DABS AT LOW TEMPERATURE, APPLYING THE ‘BLOOM DAB’ TECHNIQUE CAN LEVEL UP YOUR CONSUMPTION EXPERIENCE AND HELP YOU MORE THOROUGHLY ENJOY THE NUANCES AND COMPLEXITIES EACH PRODUCT HAS TO OFFER.”

T H E F O U N DAT I O N S

Picture this. It’s 2010. You just got to your weed dealer’s place because it’s faster to drive across town than to wait for him to come to you. You’re just there to buy a bag, man. Then, out of nowhere, he whips out a smoking contraption and suddenly you’re the guinea pig for your dealer-turned-backyard-chemist’s creations. He fires up a torch and blasts a titanium nail until it’s glowing red hot, tells you “It’s go time,” and drops a fat chunk of crumble on top as you inhale. As you pull the thousand degree cloud of vaporized Cannabis into your lungs, you are immediately destroyed – doubling over in pain as you cough harder than you ever have before. This is unfortunately the way that many veteran consumers experienced Cannabis concentrates for the first time, nearly martyring themselves through the pursuit of higher heights.

THE VERDICT

DIAMONDS IN SAUCE

Thankfully, this fundamentally wrong approach to dabbing Cannabis concentrates has been retired as the industry continues to evolve and look for healthier, less abrasive methods of consuming these products. THE NEXT LEVEL

In 2022, consumers have access to widely available concentrates-specific hardware – developed from the ground up to achieve the best dabbing experience possible. We also have access to the years of anecdotal data and a modest amount of papered research to help guide our evolution. It is in this era we find well-versed concentrates connoisseur, hash maker and Masters of Rosin judge, Adam Lee Simpson, and a technique he developed to enhance and diversify the experience of consuming Cannabis concentrates.

There are a lot of reasons to deviate from your current dabbing practices and try something new. After all, it’s becoming increasingly widely known that dabbing your concentrates at high temperatures can result in adverse effects to one’s health – which is why the practice of taking dabs off red-hot nails is now nearly obsolete. Beyond taking your dabs at low temperature, applying the ‘bloom dab’ technique can level up your consumption experience and help you more thoroughly enjoy the nuances and complexities each product has to offer. While it could be argued that the ‘bloom dab’ technique is essentially an overly thought out cold start, there is every bit as much of an argument that this technique can be highly beneficial for someone that’s judging Cannabis concentrates in a competition format, or for those on the retail level being tasked with deciding whether or not to add a concentrate brand to their shelves. Or perhaps you’re just an avid connoisseur who prides yourself on your palate and wants to explore every facet of flavor each unique concentrate has to offer. Whatever your situation, we recommend giving it a try and experiencing this next level technique for yourself.

YAY JULY! HERE ARE THREE SIMPLE RECIPES THAT WILL DELIGHT, AND YOU NEVER HAVE TO TURN ON THE OVEN. That’s how I like my July. And August. Top of the stove cooking is fine, but if I can toss, blend, stir and slice, I’m good. In these recipes a teaspoon of infused oil or butter is 5mg, and I went with the indica-dominant Cosmic Terps from Mr. Nice Guy. It makes me feel really good and I must say, although I rarely admit it, I smoke a bowl of this while indulging in the desserts! I’ve been told that I shouldn’t talk about smoking and only focus on eating, but I love a joint or pipe. Love to taste the terps! Serves two | 5mg THC per glass

MANGO SHAKE 2 large ripe mangoes, peeled and cut in pieces 1 cup vanilla ice cream, any type 1/2 cup milk, any type 2 teaspoons canna-butter or oil 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)

1. In a blender, combine all ingredients. 2. Divide between two large glasses.

66

Serves 12 5mg THC per slice

Some say the terpene myrcene, in mango, helps you get a little higher. I love that. Use any type of ice cream or milk, non-dairy is fine. If the mango is sweet, no extra sugar is needed. If you are wanting a thicker shake, freeze the mango before blending.

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

R EC I P E S by LAU RIE WOLF P HOTOS by B RUC E WOLF Serves two | 5mg THC per glass

FRUITY WHIP 1 1/2 cups vanilla Greek yogurt, chilled 24 pitted ripe cherries, chopped, keep juice 1 tablespoon sugar or honey 2 teaspoons canna-butter or canna-oil 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

1. In a medium bowl, combine all the ingredients. Don’t stir so much that you can’t see both the yogurt and the fruit. It’s prettier. Chill for an hour before serving.

If you haven’t tasted cherries with almond flavor, you have missed a combination that is stellar. Cherry season doesn’t last that long, seize while the iron is hot.

JULY 2022

STUFFED AND STONED CAKE

I am not suggesting that you bake the cake. It’s July. Buy any cake that feels right in this preparation. That would mean pound cakes, sponge cakes and absolutely angel food. Scoop out the inside, fill it with fruit, and drizzle with infused raspberry sauce.

2 cups raspberries 1 cup blueberries 1 cup sliced strawberries 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon lemon or orange juice powdered sugar 1 cup raspberries 4 tablespoons canna-butter, melted and cooled 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 store-bought cake of your choice, 12 serving size

1. In a medium bowl, combine the fruit with the sugar and juice. Chill. 2. In a blender or processor, combine the raspberries, canna-butter, sugar and vanilla, until smooth. Chill. 3. Place the cake on your work surface. With a serrated knife, slice the cake in half horizontally. Have the bottom half be taller. You can use toothpicks stuck in the sides to guide your cut, though by no means does it need to be perfect. Scoop the cake out of the bottom half. 4. Fill the depression in the cake with the fruit. Smooth to be level, and put the top back on. 5. Dust with powdered sugar.

With an already diverse offering of delicious products, the team in the kitchen keeps innovating – which is why their products can be found in 13 states and counting. So when we heard about the new line of live resin-infused gummies, we had to do some serious taste-testing. Known for elegant packaging, these gummies come in a classy bag format that can slip into a purse or lay on a coffee table without a second look. They are beautifully-designed, and if it weren’t for the pot leaf warning label, they’d fit right in on a convenience store shelf. Rolling around with these gummies in a pocket or a purse

feels high class – and lucky for us the high is also literal, as these tasty treats are infused with live resin and pack a full-spectrum hit of terpenes and cannabinoids. All of this results in a more robust effect than edibles made with distillate or cheap, food-grade oil. They’re also effect-specific, allowing users to choose between sativa or indica. We chose to start with the Uplift sativa gummies in sour mango, which had a perfect sugary-sourtang. We followed that up with the passionfruit, which delivered a candied tropical zing that lingered on the palate like the happy buzz after a sunny vacation, teasing the senses and hinting at more fun to come. While eating 20mg would normally be the starting point of a sesh for this stoney staffer, we found the effects to hit quickly and have a heavier body and euphoric, cerebral

high than expected … with long-lasting effects. Loving the buzz, we waited a few hours before diving into the indica bags. Starting with the regular watermelon, it was fresh and zesty with a floral-melon zing and a hint of sour – admittedly hard to not eat them all. The Sour Guava came next, hitting the palate hard with a sour blast, before melting into a fruity-melon finish that left us craving the rush of sour again and again. No matter what you’re up to this summer, consider the smoke-free option of Smokiez diverse and high-quality product line. They bring top tier vibes to everything they do, and likely have the perfect match for whatever adventures await. SMOKIEZ.COM | @OFFICIALSMOKIEZ 10MG THC/PIECE, 100MG THC/PACKAGE

AFFORDABLE DABBING ACCESSORIES

WHETHER LOOKING TO INCREASE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF YOUR DABBING OR DECREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF DAMAGE TO YOUR RIG, THERE ARE NUMEROUS OPTIONS FOR UPGRADING AND ACCESSORIZING YOUR CONCENTRATE SETUP. AND THANKFULLY, MANY PRODUCTS THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK.

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

TERP JAR Some of us have grown accustomed to the newly recyclable gram containers that our concentrates come in, but there’s a wide world of options for upgrading in this arena. Many acclaimed glass artists are also making jars that are worth checking out for styling up your storage options. This one was picked up from @ericlawglass, featuring a clear window for viewing on the bottom and a string of glass operating as a seal to the metal lid. You can find these types of jars in all different shapes and sizes, varying in price from around $25 and up.

DAB MAT A relatively inexpensive yet highly important accessory for the safety of your glass, dab mats come in all shapes, forms and customizations. Providing a safe surface for your rig may seem unessential if you are handling it with care, but after years of not using one, we have come to the realization that scratching to the bottom of the piece can definitely occur. Dab mats will keep your rig in place and minimize the mess sticky concentrates can leave behind. Both glass artists and brands alike are designing new mats and selling them locally and online, making it easier for the end consumer to have the perfect dab mat to accentuate and protect their setup.

BUBBLE CAP

The bubble cap is a classic for a reason. Helping you spin the extracts around the banger directionally with optimum control of where your extract slides, many people have adopted this form due to the minimal use of tools and additional accessories. Having been dabbing for years now, I can confidently say that bubble caps are a simple and functional addition to any dabbing setup.

PRESENTS

Hail To The Queen Dutch entrepreneur, inventor, and adventurer Mila Jansen has been smoking, smuggling, and making hashish for over a half-century. Along the way, she’s revolutionized how it’s made, established herself as an international Cannabis icon, and more than earned the title by which she’s best known—the Hash Queen. EARLY LIFE Mila Jansen was born in Liverpool on December 5, 1944. The daughter of a Dutch oil executive, she spent her childhood traveling between England, Indonesia, and the Netherlands before settling in Amsterdam in 1955. She worked in greenhouses during her teens before getting pregnant at 18 and dropping out of school. It wasn’t until 1964 that she first tried hashish—thanks to her boyfriend, who was studying medicine and wanted to observe its effects. “I rolled my first joint [tobacco and hash], and I remember just lying on the floor rolling with laughter,” Jansen says. “It was love at first toke.”

It became Mila & partner Henk at their so popular that neighbors complained about it, boutique Kink 22 (1966). and within a year, the police had shut it down. smoked a hookah with cops at the Iranian/Afghan border, and rode in the back of a truck atop boxes of dynamite. She finally arrived in India in December 1968—just in time for her 24th birthday. From there, she also ventured to Nepal, where she traveled with nomads, visited Buddhist monasteries, and learned to make charas. Mila loved India so much that she spent the next 14 years there—summering in Manali and wintering in Goa (a popular destination for hash-loving foreigners). During that time, she made a living by mailing items back to Holland to sell, including Tibetan jewelry, dresses from Delhi, and blocks of hash hidden in hollowed-out books. In 1971, she fell in love with a fellow Netherlander named Hans Swart, whom she married and had two children with. Though Mila had many adventures hiking through the Himalayas—some of which included meeting the Dalai Lama and being attacked by wolves—only one was documented on film: a three-month-long odyssey with Hans in 1976 that he hoped to turn into a documentary someday.

RETURN TO HOLLAND In 1988, Mila finally returned to Amsterdam for good— but unlike before she’d left, the city was now filled with Cannabis. So as a single mom with four kids to support, she rekindled her passion for gardening to earn a living growing weed for coffeeshops. Within a few years, she was running 13 gardens all across the city. But in 1992, her largest grow—a greenhouse with 24,000 plants— was raided by police just 10 days before harvest. Other busts followed, forcing her to reassess her career. Fortunately, though, a new opportunity was about to present itself—one that would establish her as the new hash queen of Amsterdam.

HEMP HOTEL In 1998, Mila invested some of her newly acquired capital from the Pollinator into another marijuana-relatOriginal Hemp Hotel sign & ed venture: the other Mila memorabilia. Hemp Hotel—a small budget hotel dedicated to hemp education that featured five rooms, each decorated to re-

flect a different exotic region they’d visited. They also incorporated hemp into the hotel’s amenities—including soaps, shampoos, curtains, and mattresses. Their onsite bar/café even served 11 kinds of hemp beer and hemp rolls with breakfast. And once a month, their “Hemple Temple Nightbar” hosted a “ladies’ hash night” gathering. Sadly, in 2013, their landlord chose not to renew their lease, and the Hemp Hotel was closed. MILA’S JOURNEY After the death of her former husband Hans in 2007, Mila decided to recreate a portion of their original Himalayan trek, film it, then combine that with Hans’ old footage (which had been collecting dust) into a new documentary. The result was “Mila’s Journey” (2011)—a retrospective of Mila’s life and adventures, and a touching tribute to Hans. DAB-A-DOO After serving as a celebrity hash judge at California’s Chalice festival in the early 2010s, Mila was inspired to create her own concentrate competition. On her 69th birthday, during the 2013 Cannabis Cup, the Hash Queen hosted a party at Dab-A-Doo - Amsterdam her Pollinator shop she 2014 with hash experts Doug dubbed Dab-a-Doo—an Dracup, Mila, Robert Connell invitation-only event Clarke and Todd McCormick. focused on dabbable concentrates. Since then, she’s now hosted 30 Dab-A-Doos all around the globe, including Denver, Miami, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, and Jamaica. AWARDS & ACCOLADES Time has not slowed down this beloved marijuana matriarch. In 2017, she launched her own line of live resin called Hash Queen extracts. The following year, she released her autobiography, “Mila: How I Became The Hash Queen.” And this fall, she’s doing another Dab-A-Doo tour through South America. Over the past decade or so, Mila has been showered with accolades from every corner of the Cannabis world—receiving numerous lifetime achievement awards and being included in several “most influential people in Cannabis” lists. Yet, there’s one honor we still owe her: an official coronation. Because, after all, every queen must have her crown. THE POLLINATOR Since she didn’t care much for smoking flower, Mila made her own hash, which she did by dry-sifting the leftovers from her various grows—a slow, tedious process best done in the cold. She did that for a couple of years… until one night in 1994 when, while doing some laundry, she had an epiphany. “I was standing in front of my clothes dryer, and it suddenly hit me: what those clothes were doing inside the dryer, waffling around like that, is exactly what I was doing with this dried [plant] material. So the next morning, I went and got an old clothes dryer, put a screen around the drum, took away the heating, threw my leaves in, and lo and behold—the crystals were lying in the bottom of the dryer! I had invented the Pollinator.” Simple yet brilliant, the Pollinator was the first device ever designed to separate the trichomes With early Pollinator machines. from dried Cannabis mechanically rather than by hand (how it had been done for thousands of years prior). “I had 5,000 guilders (Dutch dollars) left after all those years of growing, so I used them to build the first three Pollinators,” she says. “Robert Connell Clarke unveiled it at the Cannabis Cup that year, and it’s taken off from there.” The invention of the Pollinator led to the creation of what’s known as “nederhash”— a style of dry pressed hash made in the Netherlands. (Before this, almost all hash in Amsterdam was imported.) With their catchy slogan of “Hash from Trash,” Mila and her team started selling the machines like hotcakes (or, should I say, pannekoeken). The Pollinator was soon followed by her Ice-O-Lator bags in 1998 and the Bubbleator in 2005 (both used for ice water extraction to make “bubble hash”). Her extraction machines’ success earned Mila a handsome living and a regal new honorific: the Hash Queen. Unfortunately, in 2015, the Dutch government informed Mila that her Pollinator shop in Amsterdam was considered the equivalent of an illegal grow shop, and she was forced to go to court. Thankfully, she won her case—but not before making the difficult decision to sell the shop.

I THINK IT’S TIME we rebranded these planets. I’m thinking Penis and Mons. I don’t know. A guy named John Gray wrote a bestselling book in 1992 called “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus” and the term quickly became a popular catchphrase that captured the world of differences between the two sexes. I never read the book, but it would be assumed that there’s a distinction made between the two planets that align with the tendencies of gender. And planets aren’t the only inanimate objects that get assigned masculine and feminine attributes, because boats and cars are usually referred to as female. I don’t know of many items referred to as male, but surely someone somewhere has a butcher knife named Butch, or a Sherman tank named Sherman. And while we’re rebranding planets, just for the record, I’m not cool with calling Pluto a dwarf planet. It’s not fair. You can’t just disqualify a planet in the middle of the game as if it just wiped its ass with a penalty flag after a touchdown. The system taught us that there are nine planets and now we’re just simply expected to shift to eight. That’s bullshit. And the reason it pisses me off is because if you’re not entirely sure about something you’re going to teach in schools, then don’t teach it. And besides, Pluto is my favorite dog. He’s got his shit together a lot more than Goofy, that’s for sure. Anyway, Mr. Gray ain’t wrong. I mean, it doesn’t take long once you’ve hit puberty to understand the chasm between how the brains of men and women work. For instance, when she is thinking “I wonder what he is like…” – he is thinking “I wonder what she is like in bed…” By the way, if Cannabis genders are also to be associated with a planet, the females are from Mercury and the males are from Uranus.
