elements of our culture and the Cannabis industry for decades, transforming the way that people consume and view our plant. Beyond bongs, the industry has created an art scene that is enviable in all industries. Few of us drink beer from a custom goblet, but many people smoke out of $10,000+ dab rigs daily. To me, the most amazing part about glass is the fragility. Combining heat and borosilicate and the creative madness of a lampworker creates art pieces worthy of the greatest museums, but it can easily be snatched away with a simple tip or drop. I get extremely nervous holding high end glass, especially with today’s values. I had the anxious pleasure of dabbing out of a $50,000 set recently and couldn’t get over the value as I passed it around a session. Holding that value in hand, let alone smoking out of it, was simply amazing. As the Cannabis industry and culture continues to go mainstream, it is important to recognize all the elements that are driving it forward. Glass art is at the tip of the spear. This issue honors many amazing artists, styles and innovation. Without these beautiful works of art, the act of smoking weed or taking a dab would be a lot more bland. I want to thank all the artists out there making it happen, those we featured, and the up and coming dreamers imagining the next new way to enjoy our plant. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do, and are able to appreciate the amazing and one of a kind art we worked hard to capture.

ALABAMA MAN GETS 3 YEARS IN PRISON FOR GROWING 7 POT PLANTS IN HIS BACKYARD

bill legalizing the possession and sale of CBD oil is headed to the governor’s desk in Indiana. Residents will be able to legally buy low-

THC cannabis extracts containing cannabidiol (CBD) if, as expected, Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb signs a bill which is headed for his desk. The bill’s strict labeling rules, however, could block most CBD manufacturers from Indiana’s market, reports IndyStar. Senate Bill 52 is seen by state lawmakers as a “fix” to House Enrolled Act 1149, which passed last year. That legislation allowed epilepsy patients to possess CBD oil, but provided no way for them to legally buy it. SB 52 passed the Indiana Senate 36-11, and unanimously in the House. Requirements under the new law are so stringent that Hoosiers could still have difficulty finding affordable CBD oil. “We’re going to have to come back and fix this next year, but we’ve got to at least get it legal,” said Rep. Matt Pierce (D-Bloomington). Manufacturers are required by SB 52 to test each batch of CBD oil to make sure it has less than 0.3 percent THC. They seem quite concerned that someone might actually get high on the stuff. SB 52 also requires that CBD products sold in Indiana have a QR code on the label. The code must link to a document with information on the specific batch. Information required includes the ingredients and the name of the company that manufactured the ingredients. “That really isn’t feasible for companies our size,” according to CBD manufacturer Josh Hendrix. Hendrix, the director of business development at CV Science, Inc., made the remark in a Feb. 27 committee hearing, reports IDS News. Most CBD oil manufacturers would have to create new labeling to quality for sales in Indiana. That includes Plus CBD oil, the market leader, which is typically found in health food stores. Since the bill doesn’t specifically legalize the manufacture of CBD oil within Indiana, there would still be questions over whether such manufacture would be permissible. Indiana retailers will be allowed to continue selling CBD oil without the strict labeling requirements until July 2018.

n Alabama man will serve three years in prison for growing seven marijuana plants in his backyard. Limestone Circuit Judge Robert Baker

sentenced Robert Michael Musick, 40, of Athens, Alabama, to 10 years, three of which he must serve. Musick also got two years of probation for “drug trafficking,” reports The Athens News Courier. Musick’s first trial ended in a deadlocked jury and a mistrial. Just under two months later, he was re-tried and convicted. It all began in August 2015, when the Athens Police Department got a tip that Musick was growing Cannabis in his backyard. The officers seized seven marijuana plants from him, ranging from three to 10 feet tall. “When investigators checked the information, they could see the plants growing in the backyard,” Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said at the time. “The owner of the property refused our request to go in the backyard.” Investigators got a search warrant, Johnson said, and secured the area. Johnson estimated the seven plants would yield 15-20 pounds “if all the leaves were harvested.” Cops also found piles of Cannabis leaves, stems, “finished smoking product,” six pipes “with marijuana residue inside” and three large bongs “with residue.” The report also notes the presence of two marijuana grinders “with debris” and two jars of seeds, according to a complaint filed by Police Investigator Mickey Hart. After an initial mistrial due to a hung jury, a second trial began in November 2017. Jurors in that trial only took about two and a half hours to return a unanimous guilty verdict. Judge Baker sentenced Musick to 10 years under Alabama law. However, he split the sentence so that Musick is only required to serve three years in prison. The other seven years were suspended, pending the successful completion of two years’ probation. Musick was also fined $25,000, court records show. Three years is too harsh, according to attorney Phillips. “It’s definitely time for a change in the law,” she said. “No one should serve three years for growing marijuana in [their] backyard.”

WEST VIRGINIA U.S. ATTORNEY VOWS TO ‘AGGRESSIVELY’ ENFORCE FEDERAL MARIJUANA LAWS

S. Attorney Mike Stuart of West Virginia, a Trump appointee who took office in January, didn’t spend much time in his new position before stirring up some controversy.

Last week, Stuart tweeted about the “gateway theory,” a continuously debunked theory that marijuana leads to the use of harder, dangerous drugs. In the same tweet, Stuart promised to “AGGRESSIVELY” enforce federal marijuana laws. While U.S. Attorney Stuart, of course, gets to have his own opinions regarding Cannabis, he doesn’t get to have his own facts. His tweet collides head-on with much of what scientists have learned about the herb. “Scientists long ago abandoned the idea that marijuana causes users to try other drugs,” TIME Magazine reports. “Since then, numerous other studies have failed to support the gateway idea.” For decades, the gateway theory was a leading argument for prohibition. But now, D.A.R.E., the group which notoriously misinformed children about the risks of marijuana in the ‘80s and ‘90s, admits that the overwhelming majority of people who smoke pot never graduate to hard drugs. Last year, the Drug Enforcement Administration also quietly removed a report on the gateway theory from its website. “These myths have been at the heart of positions held by marijuana prohibitionists and often served as their platform when voting against medical Cannabis legislation,” wrote American for Safe Access Founder Steph Sherer at the time. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences reported to Congress on the alleged dangers of medical marijuana. The Institute’s report flatly stated, “there is no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs.” Recently, attempts by anti-Cannabis folks to bring the moribund gateway theory back to life have surfaced. U.S. Attorney Stuart’s tweet can properly be seen as part of that unfortunate trend. Ironically, substance abuse researchers are finding that Cannabis, in many cases, holds promise for helping addicts recover. A study, recently released by the RAND Corporation, found that people living in states with easy access to marijuana are less likely to overdose from opioids. The results affirm the promise of Cannabis as a potential solution for the opioid crisis, which is now considered the largest drug epidemic in American history. According to the Centers for Disease Control, as of 2016, West Virginia had the highest drug overdose rate in the U.S.

ALASKA, OREGON SENATORS INTRODUCE BILL TO ALLOW CANNABIS BUSINESS BANKING

laska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski and Oregon Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley in March introduced a measure within the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act to allow legal Cannabis businesses to use banks.

The measure would stop federal officials from punishing banks simply “because the depository institution provides or has provided financial services to a Cannabis-related legitimate business.” Many banks won’t do business with Cannabis growers, processors or sellers because marijuana is still a controlled substance under federal law. “While there are financial institutions which will bank marijuana-related businesses, many are uncertain about the state of the law,” Sen. Murkowski said. “The SAFE Banking Act is intended to resolve these uncertainties, not only for the benefit of the marijuana businesses but also for the states that regulate them.” “If that passes, it’s going to be a huge deal for us,” Lenin Pau, bookkeeper at Good AK Cannabis in Fairbanks said, reports U.S. News. “It’s going to lower a lot of expenses for us if we no longer have to hand-deliver cash to different locations.”

30+ DISPENSARIES NOW OPEN IN MARYLAND

ore than 30 medicinal Cannabis dispensaries are now open and operating throughout Maryland, a month after the state’s long-delayed medical marijuana program got off the ground, reports the Baltimore Sun.

There are 34 dispensaries operating in a dozen counties and in Baltimore. The state has approved 102 dispensaries. Maryland’s medical marijuana market is expected to be lucrative. That has, of course, inspired strong interested from medical marijuana companies. The state’s medical marijuana law allows Cannabis for any severe condition for which medical treatments have been ineffective. Nurse practitioners, dentists, podiatrists and nurse midwives can authorize its medicinal use, as can physicians.

CALIFORNIA LEGALIZATION LEAVES OUT NEEDIEST PATIENTS, ADVOCATES SAY

alifornia’s neediest medical marijuana patients are becoming unintended victims of Proposition 64, the 2016 voter initiative that legalized and regulated adult Cannabis use.

The law, which requires all marijuana to be tracked from seed to sale and subject to high taxes, doesn’t make clear whether cost-free donations are allowed under what has long been known as “compassion programs,” according to advocates. The gray area has forced numerous patient advocacy organizations, growers and dispensaries that donate to patients suffering from AIDS, cancer and other diseases to end their charity. Compassionate care programs at Sweetleaf Collective in San Francisco, the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Santa Cruz, the San Leandro-based Educating Veterans About Cannabis, and Harborside dispensary in Oakland are among those put on hold since January when recreational sales began. “A lot of us compassion programs have been operating within the law, and now all of a sudden we are told we can no longer operate,” said Joseph Airone, the founder of Sweetleaf Collective in San Francisco. Every year since 1996, Sweetleaf Collective given as much as 100 pounds of Cannabis to cancer and HIV/AIDS patients. Sweetleaf and 20 other groups have formed the California Compassion Coalition, which is lobbying the state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control, along with the agriculture and health departments, to let organizations give Cannabis to those who benefit from it and can’t afford it.

ALASKA HOUSE TO FEDS: BUTT OUT OF OUR CANNABIS INDUSTRY

he Alaska House has asked the federal government to stay out of its state-authorized Cannabis industry.

The on March 19 voted 38-0 to pass a nonbonding resolution asking the federal government to respect Alaska’s authority to regulate Cannabis use, production and distribution, reports the Associated Press. The resolution also urges the feds to reconsider their listing of marijuana as a controlled substance.

HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE BEST CANNABIS OR PRODUCTS FOR THEM? I feel like you have to establish what your client is looking for and what effect they want to get out of their Cannabis experience. If you understand what symptoms or health issues they’re dealing with and trying to cope with or combat, it’s an opportunity to open them up to possibilities they maybe hadn’t considered. I implore my peers in the industry to take the time to ask better qualifying questions. That, and to hone their ability to discern and disseminate vital information from customers – this is a huge part of the position. It should permeate the management and ownership structures of our industry, in my opinion.

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? I had my first experience with Cannabis shortly after moving from Hawaii to Oregon more than a decade ago. I was at a house party and a friend was passing around a bowl, so I decided to give it a shot, but it wasn’t really until a year or so down the line that I started to buy my own flower. That’s when I really started to delve into learning about the more sophisticated aspects of Cannabis. Ed Rosenthal’s “Marijuana Grower’s Handbook“ was the nexus for me. It’s what really got me interested in the horticultural science of the plant.

DO YOU PUT MUCH FAITH IN THC OR CBD PERCENTAGES TO CONVEY A STRAIN’S EFFECTS? I’ve been around for a while and have seen some pretty dramatic improvements from the testing system of years past. That’s not to say that the current incarnation is perfect, by any means. I personally believe there should be an annual third-party audit of the state’s certification procedures and processes, to keep everyone honest. To be honest, I believe that first-hand experience with a product is second to none. Our stellar team of budtenders are all intimately familiar with the products that we lovingly curate for our clients. My personal philosophy on the matter is that if I can’t judge for myself that the product is outstanding, why should a number on a piece of paper make me feel better about it?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF THE JOB? I’ve been a budtender for about half a decade, and I really love my job! Without a doubt, my absolute favorite part of this job is building long-term client relationships that are really meaningful for the customer, and for me. These relationships can be so beneficial, so crucial – I learn a lot from the people who come through the door.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONSUME CANNABIS? I maintain a healthy rotation of flower, and I use some (pen-style) cartridges and consume some concentrates as well. But, I love dabbing, and dabs will make me dance, no doubt! Variety is where it’s at, and I enjoy mixing it up.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS AND EFFECTS? I tend to love Indica-dominant strains. Grown right, I love Purple Hindu Kush, and similar varieties steal my heart. When I’m looking for flower — dense, paradise found purple, frosty 10735 NE Halsey St, Portland nugs and that (971) 803-7172 sweet Myrcene and Linalool combination — that gets me every time. My job involves being on my feet all day, so I am passionate and particular about my moments of peace.

WHAT DIFFERENTIATES THIS SHOP’S APPROACH TO CUSTOMER SERVICE?

We believe in a no-pressure environment, where you are greeted warmly and familiarly every time. We’re in an area of town that has lot of older clientele and non-traditional smokers, so being able to relay pertinent and crucial information in a manner that makes sense to them and other patients is of paramount importance to myself and the rest of the staff. We want to emphasize that our clients are integral to our continued success and growth.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS OUTSIDE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? I’m a fan of food culture, an unapologetic foodie. I love searching for new culinary experiences. My buddy Brandon Parsons has been in the kitchen for a few of the Arcane Revelry events, and I hear he’s putting out amazing food at these events!

RACHAEL AUSTIN Rachael Austin was born in England, moved to New York and eventually landed in the lush city of Portland. Austin has used Cannabis since she was 19, mostly recreationally. But after she moved to the states in 2001, Austin was living two miles away from Ground Zero on September 11th. The aftershock of those events and living in the city constantly triggered her PTSD.

ustin looked to move out West. In October 2003, Austin officially moved to Oregon and years later endured a stroke that dramatically altered the trajectory of her life. “I moved to New York and got a job working for Def Jam, reporting to the Senior VP of anti-piracy in 2001. My office was next to Jay-Z’s office in midtown Manhattan -- and then 9/11 happened. I lived about two miles away from the World Trade Center,” Austin said. “My neighbor woke me up by pounding on the door and we went to the roof and saw the second plane hit. The aftermath, the burning smell, the poster size headshots of missing people was traumatic. I began to have panic attacks and I couldn’t stand being crowded in the subway anymore. I started to feel like I needed to leave to the city after 9/11.” A close friend was planning on moving to Portland in 2003 and invited Austin to join him on motorcycle from New York to Portland cross-country. “I decided to join him and during the ride, I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my life and I knew I wanted to help people. So before I got to Oregon, I decided I want to become a licensed massage therapist. I got to Portland in August 2003 and officially moved to Oregon in October 2003,” Austin said. “I got a job at a local pub and enrolled in Oregon School of Massage and graduated the next year. I practiced for several years, but I wasn’t able to be as social or chatty as I’d like to be with my clients during a massage. Massage therapy is very taxing on the body, so I took a break from practicing in 2012 and started working at a restaurant where I eventually had my stroke.”

Austin was only 45 at the time of her stroke. “It was June 22 and it was the first few warm days we had in Portland. I was healthy and I was working out. I was a cigarette smoker, but I was down to five cigarettes a day. I worked a Saturday night shift at Grain & Gristle, it wasn’t a usual evening and I had been working there comfortably for a couple of years,” Austing said After my shift, I sat down with my co-workers for a glass of wine—and lit what was the last cigarette of my life. I was instantly hit with a headache like I’ve never experienced before. I took one puff and it was like a red-hot poker was thrust straight into my head – it was the most intense pain of my life.” “My friend thought I was dehydrated and went to find Gatorade. She gave me the Gatorade and I started immediately throwing up. I could hear my friends talking about who should take me home, but somewhere in my head a voice screamed at me to call 911. This was a real emergency. As soon as I could stop vomiting, a primal scream came from me and I bellowed “‘call 911.’” “I woke up in the ICU the next day. They told me I had three brain aneurysms and one had ruptured while they were trying to coil it, which caused a stroke. When I first woke up, there was so much roaring from the fluid in my ears,” Austin said. “I could see peoples’ mouths moving, but couldn’t hear anything. Luckily, it was only for a couple hours or I would have gone insane.”

Recovery & Healing

After experiencing one of the most traumatic health events a person could endure, the recovery process was a whole other battle in itself. CHARLIZE THERON Most people have been forced to consume Cannabis clandestinely for the entirety of prohibition in the United States. Now that a significant portion of the country has begun the process of legalization, slowly but surely – people are coming out of the green closet. Since celebrities are just like you and me, many of them have hidden their preference for this plant from the masses throughout their (sometimes long and storied) careers. And, as legalization (along with normalization) begin to take hold in our world, we’re hearing more acceptance and admittance of Cannabis use. In some cases, they’re coming from unexpected places. Such is the case with our subject this month. Charlize Theron is an Academy award-winning actress who has appeared in and performed in some of the most popular films of the last two decades. Theron has won countless awards and accolades and served humanitarian causes IN 2001, PAPARAZZI throughout her life. There was little evidence of Theron’s love of Cannabis through her high profile acting career. Except the time in 2001, when paparazzi caught a glimpse of Theron smoking out of an apple (old school!) at a party in the Hollywood Hills. Now, on the eve of the release of her newest movie, she’s telling the world she’s a fan of the plant. Theron’s new film, Gringo, is a modern tale about the many grey areas of legal Cannabis in 2018, where get-rich-quick capitalism mixes with the realities of the Mexican drug cartels. On the press junkets for the film, Theron has suddenly decided to be open about her past with Cannabis. In a recent interview with E! News, she said “I was a wake-and-baker most of my life….I really appreciated marijuana more than anything else. My chemistry was really good with it when I was younger and then it just changed one day. Like, in my early 30’s I just became boring on it and I would just stand in front of my fridge, so that’s no good.” Now that consumers can access a myriad of different strains, concentrates, edibles, tinctures and more – Theron has decided to dive back in. “I’m open to retrying [Cannabis] again because now there are all

these different strains and you can be specific with it,” she said. “I’m actually really interested because I have really bad insomnia, and I’d much rather get off sleeping pills and figure out a strain that helps me sleep better.” Just a week after she gave the E! News interview, Theron appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! saying that she’s already dived back in. She talked about how her mom had procured Cannabis for her. “Last week she showed up at my house. [She] literally drove in her little tennis outfit and brought me a little container and just left it on my kitchen table,” Theron said. “She was like, ‘So I got some blueberry-covered chocolate ones, but if you want it faster-acting, you should go for the mints. Those you suck, and it works faster, she said.’ “I have this image of her in the store. She’s just not this kind of person to be buying marijuana.” In our country and around the world, normalization of Cannabis is in full effect, showcased in large part by celebrities like Theron who have decided that it’s finally time to come out of the green closet.

Cleaning Tips

BUYING & CLEANING unctional glass is art. So there is

no right answer for what smoking device you should buy. Glass comes in all shapes, sizes and colors just like the Cannabis we love to enjoy. Just like with Cannabis, everyone seems to have a preference for what kind of glass they like to smoke out of. I’ll share some tips for buying the piece of functional glass that’s right for you. The biggest decision is whether you are looking to use the piece more for smoking flower or vaporizing concentrates. If you’re smoking flower, generally it’s best to have more percolation/bubbles in the piece to provide a smoother/cooler hit. More bubbles generally means smoother smoke/vapor. However, for concentrates, you want to avoid too much filtration or else you will begin to lose flavor. Since concentrates already have the majority of plant matter removed and you are utilizing a much lower temperature for vaporization, there is less of a need to cool/smooth the smoke. In this internet age, it’s very tempting to order your glass online. But I would caution readers that this is riskier than supporting a local head shop because you cannot inspect or test the piece before purchasing. This inspection is important to look for any imperfections in the piece while also getting a true feel for its size. If you’re polite and genuinely interested your local shop might even let you water test a piece to see what I call it’s ‘personality,’ meaning the way that it pulls/chugs which can vary quite a lot depending on the piece. When you are doing this I recommend partially covering the intake joint on Flower Pieces the piece to simulate how it will bubble -More percolation and bubbles when loaded with flower, some pieces -Larger capacity can change drastically depending -Easy to clean on the flow restriction. This is a test -No splash -Female joint that’s truly important because you’ll -Generally more drag likely be using your piece frequently More percolation means and you want to make sure that it’s a smoother and cooler hits personality you enjoy. Single perc pieces tend to be much easier to clean and maintain because there are fewer chambers to deal with. If you are planning on traveling with your piece it’s also key to consider portability. The best way to safely store and transport your glass is in a rigid Pelican (or similar brand) case. These cases allow you to customize the interior foam to perfectly protect your piece no matter where you want to take it. Prices and weights of these cases vary so if I am looking for a travel rig I like to first consider what size of case I want the piece to fit into so I know my maximum size I can work with.

There are a variety of helpful cleaners that have been developed to assist you to keep your bong clean. I can’t say I’ve tried them all but the most effective both in cost and ability to clean is warm 91 percent isopropyl alcohol (or iso.) I recommend also running warm water through your piece before cleaning to loosen up any stuck resins. Recycle your iso to wash slides and other accessories. I recommend investing in a couple bottle brushes to make the cleaning process as streamlined as possible. I’ve found that the easier my bongs are to clean the more I end up cleaning them, so having the right tools helps. You can also repurpose used cotton swabs and toothbrushes to help you reach any leftover resin spots.

Buying Quartz

When it comes to dabbing, I highly recommend investing in a quality German quartz banger made from GE214 or Heraeus, preferably. If you’re not sure what grade of quartz a banger is made from then make sure to ask! Quality quartz will not only last longer but each dab will have better heat retention and is easier to clean and maintain after each dab. There are more affordable quartz options on the market but you get what you pay for, I’d recommend spending more on your banger because it’s going to be a big factor for flavor. Also, there are different shapes and styles of quartz bangers to choose from, personally I prefer a flat top banger because it’s compatible with the largest variety of carb caps but I recommend looking at different options and considering which will fit your piece the best.

Cleaning Quartz

If you invest in a high-quality quartz banger you’re going to have to keep it clean and extend its lifespan. The first key to preserving your quartz is making sure that you are dabbing at a lower temperature. If you cannot wipe out the residual oil off the banger after a dab that indicates dabbing at too high of a temperature. There are two strategies for always getting the right temperature dab that works best for me. First is to figure out and remember the heat and cool times of your banger (i.e using a timer heat for 10 seconds, let cool for 20 seconds.) The time can vary greatly depending on your quartz, so make sure you do your own timing on your banger. The second strategy is using a laser thermometer to confirm the temp of your quartz before dabbing; this requires that you have a larger quartz banger (30mm or above) to get an accurate reading due to the nature of the laser thermometer sensor. You also have to ensure that you align your guide laser directly in the middle of your banger,otherwise the temperature can be inconsistent. After every dab and before you heat your banger again, thoroughly cotton swab your banger to remove any residual oil. This may require multiple Q-tips to make sure you get all the oil. I recommend investing in a sturdy cotton swab like a Q-tip because it allows you to clean more effectively. If you accidentally went at the wrong temperature or just want to keep your banger as clean as possible, I recommend wiping it down with a cotton swab or two soaked in 91% isopropyl, only after it has cooled. If you hear a sizzle when the iso. hits your nail WAIT, putting iso. on your banger when it is still hot will degrade the quartz. The advantage to having two bangers is letting one cool down for an iso wipe while the other is in use.

Don’t flaunt it, just appreciate it. While the majority of society is accepting and laws are changing, I still feel no need to wear a hat or t-shirt with a cannabis leaf, bumper stickers etc. Share it if you got it!

WHAT CHANGE(S) DO YOU HOPE TO SEE IN THE OREGON CANNABIS INDUSTRY IN 2018?

I have friends who are licensed producers and the over saturation in Oregon is real. It’s going to get worse unless OLCC can implement limits on licenses. @NVSGlassworks

HOW DID YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CANNABIS BEGIN, AND HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE?

I began using Cannabis as a teenager recreationally during high school. When you’re that age, you get together with your friends to sesh, match bowls, etc. We’d go to the Oregon Country Fair and Hempfest to hang out and smoke. As I got older I stopped smoking socially and more just at home, but if someone offers me a dab when I’m out and about I rarely say no. I’ve always been very functional in my daily responsibilities when it comes to using Cannabis. I use it a lot to help me stay focused during heavy work weeks. It also gives me energy when I’m tired and helps me relax when I’m stressed.

HOW HAS YOUR CAREER BEEN AFFECTED BY YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH CANNABIS?

I completed a business degree at PSU and initially set out to have a career in supply chain management. My first job right out of school required a drug test and I managed to pass it using some type of detox drink. I looked for better job opportunities, switched companies a few times and each one had drug testing which was a lot of stress and hassle. I was ultimately laid off around 2008

during the recession which forced me to look at other options, [and] eventually led me to [start] NVS Glassworks. I guess some might say it’s the perfect job being a stoner and owning a smoke shop, but it’s also true that you end up working for yourself more and it never stops. I’m always working from my phone 24/7 just ask my [girlfriend…]

WHAT’S YOUR PREFERRED WAY TO USE CANNABIS?

I use concentrates most of the time, especially during the day. Even though I own glass stores I only have one rig at home at the moment. I do strongly believe in investing in an American quartz nail. While the price at $20 versus $160-$200 at first seems crazy, the amount of oil you’ll save with a high quality, efficient nail will pay for itself tenfold. I just started smoking flower again a few months ago and really am enjoying it. Again. For me personally, Flower gets me tired at night and helps me sleep better. I’m currently using a Mobius Matrix bubbler but I am considering a taller full size double perc tube like a Toro or US Tubes in the near future. At home I like using a waterpipe for flower or concentrates, joints at music concerts and a dab pen when snowboarding or hiking.

Ingredients 1 cup light brown sugar ¼ cup butter, softened ¼ cup canna-butter, softened 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla 1¼ cups flour ½-3/4 cup strawberry jam 8-10 marshmallows, see note* 1 cup assorted small candy, your choice ¼ cup chocolate syrup ¼ cup caramel sauce Grated white chocolate for garnish Heat oven to 340°F.

1.In the bowl of an electric mixer

cream the sugar and butters. Add the egg and beat to mix.

2.Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

In a buttered 10-12 inch tart or spring form pan, press the dough. Bake the cookie for 12-15 minutes, until light golden brown. Remove the pan from the oven and turn the temp down to 275°F.

Spread the jam on the dough to within 1 inch of the edge. Place the marshmallows on top of the jam. Bake until the marshmallows have puffed and spread. The lower temp allowed the marshmallows to stay white, which is what I wanted. (If you stay with the higher temp the marshmallows will brown. It’s not a tragedy, in fact that marshmallow toasting adds to the flavor.)

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 30 minutes. Dot the cookie with the candy. Drizzle the chocolate sauce and the caramel over the cookie.

*Unless you are using mini marshmallows it’s best to cut the marshmallows in half. This way they won’t be too high when baked. They will rise but fall after baking.

High Holiday 4/20

is a day and a number that has brought together lovers of Cannabis for decades. Where did this tradition begin, and how has it evolved into what it is today? Like most lore in stoner culture, everyone seems to have a different story about where the tradition of 4/20 started. Some say that it’s a police code for Cannabis, others say that it’s celebrating the relaxation day after Bicycle Day, others think that it’s a reference to a Bob Dylan song. There are even more obscure ideas about where the celebration of 4/20 began that you’ve probably heard around the joint circle. However in an effort to bring the truth to light I will highlight the real origins of this day of celebration. The tradition of 4/20 started in the ‘70s by a group of students at San Rafael High School who called themselves the Waldos. These students used 420 as a code to meet up after school at 4:20 p.m. and smoke before searching the surrounding woods for guerilla Cannabis grows. The tradition evolved and was eventually spread through Grateful Dead tours. As Cannabis enters the mainstream, 4/20 has become a much bigger tradition. With whole cities like Vancouver, BC throwing iconic celebrations. Spurred by the rise of social media, the term 420 is now synonymous with Cannabis culture. What has changed today is that Cannabis is no longer in the taboo fringes of American society, because of this 4/20 is discussed across all popular and underground media, which serves as a great discussion point for the evolution of Cannabis culture into the mainstream.
