APRIL 2017 ISSUE #34
of the year and this one doesn’t disappoint. We have some incredible pieces hand-made by artists across Oregon, with new styles, shapes and colors that we haven’t shown before. I really hope you like what we have to share! This being our 4/20 issue, I thought I would touch a little on the legend of the only holiday that self-identifying “stoners” have. What makes 4/20 so special? Was it really a police call sign for Cannabis possession? No. Was it because 4/20 is the best time of day to smoke pot? No, every time is a good time to enjoy. Is it because there are 420 good reasons to smoke pot, right now? Yes, and no! The truth is, we may not know what led to our holidaze and the number internationally recognized as being stoner friendly, but now that the urban legend portion can be laid to rest, I think it’s time we made it official. A federal holiday on 4/20? Maybe someday. What if there comes a time where April 20 is the day we remember all the people who went to prison for a plant? Our fathers and mothers and cousins and brothers and friends who were locked in a cage for possessing something that came from the earth. To my way of thinking, that would make 4/20 a truly special holiday. A day of remembrance, of celebration of our culture, and the simple fact that it survived prohibition and a chance to fight pain and fear with sweet clouds of smoke. And a few stoner jokes! This 4/20, I hope you get out and celebrate access to legal Cannabis, and the jobs, tax revenue and lives our plant changes, both as a medicine and a recreational drug that is safer than alcohol. If you think about it, we really do have a lot to be thankful for, and picking a day for that makes a lot of sense. Happy 4/20, and thank you for reading and sharing the Leaf! Please feel free to roll a joint on us this month.

marijuana transactions, due to the illogical status of Cannabis as a Schedule 1 substance in the United States, means the credit card and debit card transactions are impossible at most weed stores. But that’s changed now at three dispensaries in Maine, and the new business model may become widespread in the near future. Wellness Connection of Maine (WCM), the state’s largest medical Cannabis operator, now offers members the ability to pay for Cannabis without using cash. A new mobile app, CanPay, is reportedly the first of its kind of technology for the Cannabis industry. “We’re removing a major pain point for dispensary owners and patients, while providing transparency and convenience in the process,” Dustin Eide, CEO of CanPay, said. “Our partnership with WCM provides patients in Maine access to a secure payment option that is safer than cash.” Cannabis is legal for either medical or recreational uses (or both) in 29 states, though the plant remains illegal under federal law. Because of that, the banking industry at-large has not done business within the Cannabis industry, forcing cash-only transactions. This has created safety and security issues for Canna-businesses across the country because of large volumes of cash being kept on premise. “The creation of a new app within any other industry would be insignificant,” WCM CEO Patricia Rosi said. “However within the Cannabis industry, it’s a milestone because of the increased safety that it provides and the legitimacy that it signifies. CanPay uses a mobile app, linked directly to a customer’s checking account, to allow cashfree payments within the dispensary. For each purchase, the free app creates a single-use, nonidentifiable PIN to ensure privacy and security.”

Medical Marijuana Legalization Associated With Fewer Opioid Hospitalizations
Drug Policy Alliance Receives Award For Video Featuring Jay Z Calling Drug War An ‘Epic Fail’ The Drug Policy Alliance received the 2017 DoGooder Best Nonprofit Video for Good Award for its video slamming the War on Drugs, narrated by Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and illustrated by acclaimed artist Molly Crabapple. The video first launched in The New York Times last September. The award was presented in March at the annual Nonprofit Technology Conference, hosted by the Nonprofit Technology Network in Washington, D.C. The 4-minute work is part history lesson and part vision statement. The video traces the Drug War and its impact on the Black community from President Nixon to the draconian Rockefeller Drug Laws to the emerging aboveground marijuana market that is poised to make legal millions for wealthy investors doing the same thing
that generations of people of color have been arrested and locked up for. “Jay Z and Molly Crabapple’s groundbreaking video has educated millions of people about the devastation wrought on the African American community because of the Drug War, and raises important questions about economic equity in the emerging aboveground marijuana industry,” said Asha Bandele, senior director for Grants, Partnerships and Special Projects at the Drug Policy Alliance. “We thank the DoGooder Awards for selecting our video as a finalist, our supporters who voted for us, and special thanks to Jay Z, Molly Crabapple and Dream Hampton for their contributions to this award-winning video.”
When medical marijuana is legalized for qualified patients, it is associated with a reduction in opioid-related hospitalizations, according to a new study published online. The study will appear in the scientific journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. A University of California at San Diego researcher looked at the association between medicinal Cannabis laws and hospitalizations related to opioid pain relievers, said Paul Armentano at the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The effect was apparent very quickly, and continued for years after passage of medical marijuana legalization. Both immediate and longer-term reductions in opioid-related hospitalizations followed changes in the law, the study reports. The study demonstrated significant reductions on opioid pain reliever (OPR) related hospitalizations associated with the implementation of medical marijuana polices, according to the report. The report “found reductions in OPRrelated hospitalizations immediately after the year of policy implementation as well

as delayed reductions in the third postpolicy year.” The oft-repeated claim that loosening marijuana laws result in an increase in Cannabis-related hospital admissions is also unfounded, according to the study. While the interpretation of the results should remain cautious, this study suggested that medical marijuana policies were not associated with marijuanarelated hospitalizations. Instead, the policies were unintendedly associated with substantial reductions in OPR-related hospitalizations, according to the report. Medical marijuana legalization was associated with 23 percent and 13 percent reductions in hospitalizations related to opioid dependence or abuse and OPR overdose, respectively; lagged effects were observed after policy implementation, according to the study. Medical marijuana polices had no associations with marijuana-related hospitalizations. The report confirms findings of previous studies that medical marijuana legalization is associated with lower rates of opioid abuse, fatal opioid overdoses and prescription drug spending.

Progressing Legal Cannabis Programs With the exception of counties that opted out, adults can now easily find legal Cannabis in Oregon. We, and several other states, are blazing a trail for what legal Cannabis will look like in the future, when a majority of states legalize. It’s important to consider the direction we all want this new legal program to progress toward, especially while we’re still in these initial stages of developing these programs. As a bud tender, I hear people discuss the differences between the legal OLCC and the free market Cannabis we all grew up with. It’s unreasonable to assume you can walk down the street and choose from 20 batch tested strains, extracts and edibles, all at the same price your buddy used to charge you. This main competitive advantages of the free market are price and bulk discounts. In the free market, there’s no sales limit, and larger quantities get incentivized because they’re more efficient and less risky than seeing your dealer every day. However, with the amount of dispensaries to choose from statewide, this is different in the legal market. Matthew Meyer is a Hood River-based Cannabis journalist, activist & enthusiast.
LOOKING FORWARD
There is pressure from consumers and patients to make the adult-use market more price competitive. I think a big part of this is due to our current economic situation, where wages have stagnated but the cost of living is rapidly increasing. It’s more complicated than you’d think, there are serious overhead costs involved with selling, producing or distributing legal

answer, as these state-run programs are all still new. The truth is regulators will balance some form of both, but which should be prioritized? It seems immediately clear we should maximize quality over size. With the controls already in place, it’s easier to monitor quality, and although it’s imperfect, it remains necessary. If there was a shift toward size maximization, these protections could change or disappear. In the age of neo-capitalism, consumer protections are more relevant than ever. Otherwise the only thing protecting consumers from potentially harmful products is the great imaginary ‘invisible hand’ that our political leadership puts so much faith in… It’s an incredibly difficult job to effectively regulate, since the public can be misinformed or ignorant of the risks. So please, if you have a suggestion for how the market regulations can be improved, make sure to communicate that to the appropriate leaders in a respectable way. We’ve seen a movement to repeal the quality protections for consumers and we haven’t even made it through a full year of OLCC controlled Cannabis. Check out Simone’s article on pesticide testing on page 62 to learn more. The point of moving to legal Cannabis is it’s regulated and controlled for public safety, like other consumables. Under neo-capitalism we’ve seen a huge movement for de-regulation of all markets made popular by Milton Friedman, whose core belief is that ‘greed is good’ so we shouldn’t try to prevent greed, we should embrace it.

GEORGE ZIMMER A VERY WELL-DRESSED CANNABIS ADVOCATE “You’re going to like the way you look, I guarantee it…” With that simple slogan, George Zimmer changed the way men shopped for suits and business attire in the United States. Through his Men’s Wearhouse company, Zimmer became one of the most recognizable businessmen in America during the go-go 90s and remained that way into the 2000s. Successful Cannabis advocates in the public eye often avoid admitting to consuming on a regular basis, instead opting for being ‘supporters’ of legalization. Zimmer, however, is the real deal – he admits to still consuming the plant at age 68. He credits Cannabis with weaning himself off of alcohol, saying that he hasn’t had a drink in more than 35 years. “The fact is, and I mean the scientific fact, [Cannabis] is less toxic and dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol, which are the main drugs in the United States,” Zimmer told Business Insider magazine earlier this year. “I’m just following a kind of lifetime passion of mine to help correct this myth,” Zimmer said, a Cannabis user since the 1970s. Ahead of his keynote speech at the Cannabis Collaborative Conference in Portland ZIMMER IS HELPING in February, Zimmer told bizJournals that “In TO MAINSTREAM A the emerging marijuana industry, we have FACT THAT MANY a chance to make a clear statement about OF US ALREADY ARE stakeholder capitalism. And by stakeholder AWARE OF: THERE’S capitalism, I mean that we move beyond NO SUCH THING AS A simply focusing on what’s good for the owners of the business, but also encompass em“LAZY STONER.” ployees, customers, communities, even vendors to the company. We have a chance to say that it’s not just the results, but how they’re obtained that matter. When I was at Men’s Wearhouse, I would not make decisions in which the only beneficiaries were the shareholders.” In 2013 he was unceremoniously fired as executive director of his own company by its board of directors, cited as a total breakdown in communication by the board and as a disagreement on business practice by Zimmer. When asked about whether Cannabis helped him through the process of being ousted from his own successful company, Zimmer said, “I refer to [marijuana] as harm reduction. So the way Cannabis helps is, when you lose your job, you don’t go on a two-week bender.” Not one to stay out of the game for long, Zimmer has now launched Generation Tux, a high-end tuxedo rental company. In addition to this, he’s also worked diligently toward mainstreaming Cannabis usage, speaking at conferences around the country. Since he doesn’t fit the stereotype of the average Cannabis user, Zimmer is helping to mainstream a fact that many of us already are aware of: there’s no such thing as a “lazy stoner.”

HOW TO BE A GREAT BUDTENDER Being a budtender is a relatively new profession and that’s a very exciting thing! It means every day, people are finding creative new ways to make the customer experience better and more unique at businesses in legal states. While every shop experience will be different, there are some things that shops are doing to stand out from the pack when it comes to Cannabis. HERE ARE SOME OF THE SERVICES AND KNOWLEDGE WE’VE FOUND THAT CAN HELP ELEVATE A CANNABIS SHOP EXPERIENCE FROM GOOD TO TRULY GREAT.
20/apR. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF
Know the strains
+
A good budtender knows what’s on the shelf, inside and out. They should be well versed in the strain types the shop is currently carrying, and the typical effects of those strains. It’s helpful as well for budtenders to understand terpene profile for the flowers and concentrates they carry – since this affects the taste and scent of the flower. It’s also helpful to know how dense, or heavy the flowers are. If the customer is asking for an eighth, what will it look like? I’ve seen many a customer disappointed by “bag size” because of really denseflowers.
In the coming months, we’ll be launching a new series here at Oregon Leaf, highlighting some of the best budtenders from around the state. And you can help! If you know of a great budtender, let us know. We’re looking for the best of the best!
Divine Kind
Ask lots of questions
Exceptional budtenders go the extra mile by exceeding customer expectations. Some of the best budtenders I’ve experienced have asked the question: “What size buds are you looking for?” It’s even better (if there’s time) to allow the customer to select the buds they’d like. Good budtenders can also interpret what makes the bud special at this point, showing off trichome production and density. Part of making the customer experience the best it can be is to first find out a little about their preferences. Simple questions like “what strains have you really enjoyed in the past?” or “What sort of effect are you looking for?” go a long way for an experienced budtender to serve a customer the perfect product for their needs. In short, find out what the customer likes, ask what size buds they’d enjoy, or about similar strains they’ve enjoyed in the past. This process involves having a connoisseurs-level knowledge of strains, which all good budtenders should strive for.
Take care
Let’s face it, in both the recreational and medical market – Cannabis costs more than it used to. That’s why it is so important that budtenders take care in packaging, choosing and sorting the flower that the customer has chosen. Their paying a premium price for this service – so keep that in mind when packaging. I would also urge any shop to reconsider “pre-packaged” herb. It just feels like bad service.
Be nice
Of all the pointers included in this category, this one should be the easiest. However, I find that it’s often the most overlooked asset to a great budtender. Many customers are visiting the shop for the first time, and maybe even a dispensary for the first time. A great budtender makes customers feel welcome and at ease. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to a shop and not felt welcomed with even a simple smile. Friendliness goes a long way, especially for an industry just starting to come out of the shadows.

everything was in one room. Oregon makes shops have a door between the entry and budroom. I really liked their original art murals on the walls. Q&A
PakaloloSupplyCo.com
What got your family into the Cannabis industry?
Keenan: We are a Cannabis-friendly family, and it started with seeking out Cannabis medicinally for my sister who has epilepsy. Right about same time legalization came up for a vote, Sanjay Gupta came out with his series. It was coming to light on a national scale that people were having relief from seizures with Cannabis. That's what really got my family into Cannabis openly, although we were all closet stoners before.
How does Cannabis help your sister?
She still is in the process of treatment at the age of 21. She’s gone through phases where pharmaceuticals worked for her, now she is using pharma and Cannabis, trying to get to a point where she can only use Cannabis. It’s been a long process, Cannabis has really helped, but she has to be very careful how she weans off the other medications while transitioning to Cannabis completely.
Do you view Cannabis as a medicine, a recreational drug, or both?
[Cannabis as medicine] is something that is near and dear to our family. We all enjoy recreational aspects as well and believe you should be able to enjoy for wellness and fun. I believe rec use is a wellness thing, it provides something fun and recreational, while also providing some wellness. While we come at Cannabis from a medicinal side, which got us into this industry, I’m a firm believer that rec will benefit people medicinally.
PAKALOLO
Your garden was the first licensed in the state, and your store made the first legal sale of Cannabis in state history. What was the experience like?
We did a ceremonial sale with a friend of ours from high school. He battled cancer and Cannabis has been a huge part of his treatment. The first sale was one of best experiences of my life, to stand next to my brother with our parents, watching a close friend and rang him up, to be able to have that be the first sale, all coming together in that one legal sale of Cannabis was so exciting.
How does it feel after a few months in?

to make this happen, and it’s great to sit here and say we are actually doing it and we all succeeded to make Cannabis legal. It’s a dream come true and a lot of fun.
Have there been any issues since you started? How is supply and demand affecting the store?
We were cranking along in the beginning, functioning for two months before we hit the wall on supply not meeting demand, and pretty much every store in the state either shut down or slowed down. Now we are only open two to four days a week, until more cultivators get licensed and more products come online. The market is constantly growing and there are a lot of consumers already, and there are new consumers all of the time entering the market, so we are just trying to keep up with demand.
Do you think the market is going to start speeding up soon?
I think that the industry is starting to catch up, a lot of the licensees are starting to get product out, and by summer there are going to be a lot of new products available. The demand is so high, it's really exciting and we couldn't be more thrilled by how welcomed we've been into community.
island to have a family, and we have always gone back and forth to visit Hawaii and our cousins. We even moved one from the island and his family to work in the company here. We also have a lot of very unique genetics that nobody else has that are Hawaiian based. Kona Gold and Maui Wowie, and we have those strains crossed with newer strains like Mango Diesel, Coffee Kush. We’ve got some really unique stuff you can’t find anywhere else in Alaska.
What are you really proud of?
We are really proud of our no-till gardening and our organic approach to growing, and combining that into practice with Cannabis. We believe we put out a high quality and tasty product! We’re really excited about how we are a no-waste facility—all Cannabis waste goes into compost, we reuse all soil and recycle, and pretty much everything is reused and that's something we are proud of. Our focus is on keeping our footprint one of lowest in the country, with LED lights and low energy consumption. We wanted to be as sustainable as possible and environmentally conscious as possible. It’s our family values. We want to do our best to achieve that, and feel that's the way it should be done.
What does the name represent?
We’re called that because it’s the Hawaiian word for Cannabis. We have a family connection to Hawaii, my uncle met a Hawaiian woman and stayed on the

annassentials is an OLCC licensed tier 2 producer that specializes in organic craft Cannabis. The farm is located near Veneta, Oregon which is about 15 miles west of Eugene. Two climate controlled greenhouses make up most of the canopy space, with the exception of a shade grown plot that is reserved for the summer season. Both greenhouses were built by hand, by the Cannassentials crew, with parts ordered and assembled from all over the world. The drying rooms at the farm were unique as well. Four environmentally controlled pods at the front of the facility ensured that every plant harvested was dried and cured to its desired moisture content. Strains such as Orange Haze, Blue City Diesel, Sour Kush and Girl Scout Cookie were all a few weeks into flower when we strolled through the first greenhouse. Their Orange Haze, Dope Cup 2016 best medical nose, was reaching for the lights standing at about 8 to 9 feet tall and had razor thin fan leaves. Cannassentials utilizes a living soil system that takes organics to a whole new level. The use of Korean Natural Farming techniques, such as feeding fruit and plant ferments, really takes the quality up a notch. All the flowers at Cannassentials are carefully hand-trimmed by a skilled, detail oriented crew. “Having a team that feels appreciated and compensated for their hard work is crucial to success — we pay our trimmers and gardeners some of the highest wages in the industry,” Co-owner Myron Chadowitz said. Toward the end of the tour, we were fortunate enough to sample some of the flower that had been harvested a few weeks prior. Tropical Punch and Sour Kush were two of our favorites, capturing both ends of the flavor spectrum. The CBDiscovery team just finished processing a few of the farm’s staple strains, which should be hitting shelves in the coming weeks.
Cannassentials Flower is currently available in Eugene and Portland at select OLCC retailers.

OREGON LEAF
STRAIN OF THE MONTH Recon is a cross of LA Confidential and
Cannadential bred by DNA Genetics. The Eugreen team has held onto this strain for quite some time, as I remember seeing it in their medical dispensary a few years back. Each bud is expertly handled as there is no visible trichome degradation even after packaging. The buds have a dark purple hue complimented by vibrant orange hairs reaching from every calyx. The terpene profile is rather unique and complex, I detected notes of lavender, cream, and spice. I rolled up a few joints and smoked them with some buddies. The smoke is incredibly smooth as each hit burns to a pure white ash and the flavor stays present throughout the joint. The effects are relaxing, calming, and not too tiring given the lineage. This strain is ideal for consumers who need pain relief but also need a functional high.

The plan is to have ten starters and eight sweets, all gently infused with either Canna-butter or Cannaoil. We’re featuring three of them here. Potency of each dish should be listed tableside, so you can maintain your dignity. I almost always do.
These are a few of my favorite “go-to” starters from my book “Cooking with Cannabis” by Quarto Press.

Smoked Salmon w/ Cucumber & Cream Cheese A refreshing snack that is perfect for company or just one. You can mix the salmon into the cream cheese, but I prefer to place a little slice on top, with a squeeze of lemon and sometimes capers.
1. Slice cucumber & place on work surface. 2. In a small bowl combine cream cheese and the Canna-butter.
3. Spread cream cheese mixture on each of the cucumber slices.
4. Sprinkle with the scallions. 5. Top with pieces of salmon and
a squeeze of fresh lemon, if so desired.
INGREDIENTS 1 small cucumber, scrubbed clean with the ends removed 4 tablespoons cream cheese 2 teaspoons Canna-butter 2 scallions, thinly sliced 4 ounces smoked salmon 1/2 lemon, optional

DAB LAB JUICE JOINT CO2 HOP EXTRACTED BEER
I
had a phone interview last month with Nick Arzner, owner of Block 15 Brewing, to discuss the new CO2 hop extracted beer they make: “Dab Lab Juice Joint.” Block 15 has actually been using CO2 extracted hops for several years now, though this is the first time they’ve decided to advertise it to the public. One of the key advantages to using CO2 extracted hops is the ability to add a bittering charge without adding flavor. The “Dab” (Dank Ass Beer) Lab series is not intended to hint at a convergence of industries, but to highlight a process that is unique, and relatable to the Cannabis industry. Block 15 Brewings use of Lupulin powder is another distinctive addition that aids in the dry hopping of the beers. Lupulin powder is the beer industry’s version of a cryogenic hop hash that is used in most of Block 15’s beers. These little yellow oil pods can be found inside a hop cone, and contain most of the flavoring and bittering potential from the alpha and beta acids. The ability to control the amount of bitterness being added without sacrificing flavor is what allows Block 15 to create unique, Oregon inspired brews.

Dabbing this extract at low temperatures reveals an orange cherry terpene profile that differs slightly from the usual cherry cough syrup taste that most CBD extracts have. THE INDUSTRY DIVIDE PESTICIDE REGULATION IN OREGON

Mike Smith, master grower and owner of Geek Farms discussed he honeymoon is over. his thoughts on the current state of pesticide testing. Smith said he The divide between Cannabis test labs and believes reasonable pesticide testing should be in place. Cannabis business continues to as pesticide regulations BY OREGON LEAF “I think the biggest issue is that we took Cannabis as a whole come under fire. can’t use it to farm Cannabis. It’s banned by current standards and I think we should examine issues like these,” Lewis said. “I think moving to a random sample model will still hold our industry accountable and maintain public safety. If you are using banned products you will be caught.” “My other main issues are the cost of testing and lab oversight. Ten-pound batch limits are going to get really expensive as a commercial grower. I think labs and growers should get together and reevaluate these standards,” Lewis said. Both commercial growers complained about gross lack of lab oversight. Who polices the labs? Who ensures labs are following compliance and staying current on lab standards? I discussed these industry grievances with Hayes, and it sounds like solutions can be expected in the future. Currently, they are working on passing the proposed amendments to Senate Bill 306. This would mean starting July 1, “…the Oregon Health Authority shall employ three full-time equivalent employees for the purpose of accrediting laboratories that conduct tests of marijuana items as described in ORS 475B.565.” Meaning, using the money generated from the OMMP program to be put back into the Cannabis industry for things like lab oversight. Third-party lab oversight is vital to the integrity and transparency of our industry. The passage of these amendments to SB 306, allows the state to construct the foundations of Cannabis lab accountability. Hayes said he believes the labs would welcome dialog and input from growers on how to improve and streamline testing processes without compromising public health. Laura Brannan and Hovering Laplante, owners Elbe’s Edibles, had a few words on the subject of testing. “We have our flower tested, butter tested, and the end product tested. My number one concern for pesticide testing, is when we hear that Cannabis testing is more strict than food testing, we should pause,” Brannan said. “At that moment we have done everything wrong because we are working with a recreational drug. When we are doing that much testing, we know there is other interest involved other than the safety of the public. Because the lab tests are so outrageously priced, it forces most edible companies to buy from one source of distillate because they can get a lot of it for cheap, because these companies are backed by millions of dollars. What this does is close down every mom or pop, - mom and mom, or dad and dad – small business. We can not afford to compete against $1 million pockets.” On the hotly contested subject of testing pricing, Hayes said under the ten-pound batch limit, the cost breaks down to 7 cents a gram to test when it comes to flower. When writing the law, they chose the ten-pound batch limit because they could
adequately ensure public safety at that rate. The labs’ biggest concern in regard to random sampling is contaminated products entering the market undetected. Hayes said that if we forgo mandatory pesticide testing, labs will lose money and livelihoods could be threatened. “We went to the meetings,” Brannan said. “I was on the ruled advisory committee for edibles, but testing is still an issue. I am not against pesticide testing; I am against testing redundancy and the arbitrary numbers they pull out of thin air. There is no third-party to ‘lab the labs’.” “They aren’t acknowledging the nuances of the industry,” Laplante of Elbe’s Edibles said. “The labs are creating these campaigns around public fear and essentially saying we don’t care about our patients, customers or the industry. We originally hail from a medical background.” Mark Kelley, operations manager of Shaman Cannabis in southeast Portland said his biggest area of concern was concentrates. The cost of dabs and vape pens has skyrocketed because of the costs of lab testing. One gram of concentrate would usually range from $30 up to $60 per gram for high-quality nug runs and live resins back in the medical market. Now, it’s common to see grams of concentrate starting at $60 sometimes $100 a gram before tax. “It’s affecting concentrate users the most and it’s pushing them back into the black market. They don’t want to shell out $75 for a Cannabis concentrate in Oregon, when they can drive to Vancouver and find something reasonable for $30 including tax,” Kelley said. Washington does not require mandatory pesticide testing. Shop operators like Kelley argue that suffocating lab regulations do the opposite of public safety because it’s pushing the adults back into the black market. “Some of our medical patients use concentrates to treat themselves and they can’t afford $75 a gram, especially if they are on a fixed income,” Kelley said. “We don’t have food stamps or subsides for marijuana as a medicine. I am not against pesticide
testing, but I believe random sampling is completely impartial. Yes, it’s a bit of an honor system, but if you have random walk-throughs, random inspections done on premise, and every point of access covered with security cameras, and every product logged in your metric system, including all your additives you used to grow. Everything is recorded. I don’t see why it isn’t enough.” “The cost of Cannabis products drives people out of the Oregon market and it compromises our closedloop,” Kelley said. “The entire premise of our market is to keep it closed-loop so there is no federal interference. Once you compromise the integrity of the closed-loop it threatens the market. That’s what the cost of testing is doing in regard to products.” To dispensaries and growers, random sampling helps keep the cost of products down while remaining competitive with surrounding markets. Labs argue the cut in costs ultimately threatens public safety and puts livelihoods in jeopardy.
“IT SEEMS LIKE THE PEOPLE IMPLEMENTING THESE LAWS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT’S LIKE TO ACTUALLY FARM A CANNABIS CROP FROM START TO FINISH.”
Both sides I spoke with agree third-party lab oversight is a necessary measure worth pursuing, and both sides aren’t asking that pesticides testing be removed from Oregon Cannabis testing standards, maybe just reexamined. The industry must find a solution that maintains public safety without putting anyone out of business. Either way, somebody is going to lose money. The labs claim public health on their side, but growers argue labs shouldn’t incentivize public health by making money off the backs of other industry members. There isn’t an easy answer to this complex question, but it will require better communication between all parties. We are at a metaphorical fork in the road: Do we ease up on the frequency of pesticide testing at the possible expense of public health to deter users from entering the black market? Or do we maintain mandatory pesticide requirements and potentially turn users back into the black market and risk market destabilization? Let’s hope we find common ground.

HOW PRESSURE IMPACTS GARDENS Plants rely on pressure differentiation to pull up nutrients through the roots, transport minerals, maintain turgor pressure and a variety of other functions. Plants also have stomata: tiny pores, predominantly on the leaf surface that the plant can open or close, allowing for transpiration (the release of internal water vapor through the stomata into the surrounding environment). The stomata is also the mechanism through which the plant intakes Carbon Dioxide. The relative humidity in your room is additionally a measure of the amount of pressure being exerted on your plants. If you think of your plants as maintaining 100 percent relative humidity inside the leaf surface, the plant will monitor and adjust the amount of water vapor it releases through transpiration based largely on the relative humidity outside that leaf surface. If the relative humidity or RH, outside the leaf surface is very high, there is literally more pressure pushing back onto the stomata, which limits the amount of transpiration the plant is required to perform and thus allows the stomata to open fully and stay open. Conversely, if the RH outside the leaf surface is very low, the air will “suck” more water vapor from the plant through the stomata and the plant will lose more water to transpiration. Plants will close or shrink their stomatal ideal VPD range can be supported without bringing opening in response to higher transpiration rates as a the RH to such dangerous levels. coveted “rainbow” look. The combination of evergreen and bright orange hairs is further accentuated by the dark purples that display the copious amount of trichomes. These blooms are definitely some of the most beautiful to be found on any shelf. Unlike other blooms with comparable looks and frost coverage, these flowers hit high and hard in the terp department. The danky Kush scent only dances momentarily on the senses before being overrun by a sweet and a bit of a sour Kush lemon candy fragrance that has a definitive Lysol and cleaner quality to it. Ground up and ready to roll, I get pungent redberry lemonade. Skunky, gassy, sour Kush flavors creep down my lungs and assume attack position as they explode with lung-busting expansion. Pillows of smoke pour from my mouth with such exquisite candied-lemon flavor that I cock my head to the side in curiosity. The flavor of these blooms is one of the most durable of any Kush variety I’ve sampled. Candied lemonheads and Lysol flavors stay bright and prevalent, giving way to a sour cucumber-melon taste. It’s rare that I come across Cannabis that has such potent and lasting flavors.

The lemon Larry OG Kush cut is a coveted cutting that unites some of the best lemon and Kush flavors. Taking a powerhouse like that and adding to it can be a tricky endeavor, but this wonderful strain pulls it off. Although I selected a pheno that only showed up twice out of two packs, the search was worth it.

It sports a more uniform growth structure but it’s combined with deep, dark, three-blade leaves. She’s a medium feeder and responds very well to topping, creating a balanced and even pattern with little bending and training. In flower, she is also a bit slow to transition and doesn’t stretch much, a welcome change from other elite OGs. She can take flower formula and higher levels of P and C earlier than most Kush varieties. Like her speed in veg, she’s a slow and steady winner. You have to be patient with this strain because during her last 30 days, and especially the last two weeks, she really starts to flex. In fact, everything seemed rather average until those last three to four weeks. It’s at that point that she starts throwing triches out like an East Coast snowstorm, adding chunk and girth at an alarming rate. With deep forest-green leaves, the formerly green- and orange-haired buds begin to shimmer with unmistakable violet hues that are deceptively rich in color.

With flavors like these, Cannabis enthusiast may not even need a second helping. With one bowl, I experience my scalp morphing into a rushing river, complete with waterfalls cascading behind my ears. It’s a gentle reminder of the indica heritage that makes this an exceptionally well-balanced medicine.
