Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Glass Issue of the Leaf ! I MADE MY FIRST PIPE out of an L-shaped carburetor part that I cleaned and polished into a workable Cannabis smoking device in my dad’s auto shop. This was back when smoking weed meant choosing between an apple, a pop can – or the one friend who was lucky enough to have a disgustingly resinated pipe. These early days of Cannabis slummery gave me an immense appreciation for clean and functional art, which we have documented in the Leaf for a decade now. One of my earliest stoner memories was buying a bong (tobacco water pipe) for the first time at Piece of Mind, with a feeling of sexy fear that came with smoking an illegal drug in an inspiring way. Walking through the glass shop full of colorful art shaped my view of Cannabis as more than just a drug to consume, but a lifestyle defined by art that is delivering the best feeling in the world: getting baked!

TODAY, GLASS CULTURE HAS BLOWN UP INTO AN ACCEPTED FORM OF MAINSTREAM ART THAT’S RAPIDLY EXPLODING IN AWARENESS AND VALUE.

Today, glass culture has blown up into an accepted form of mainstream art that’s rapidly exploding in awareness and value. Custom pieces fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars and get millions of views on social media – transfixing the heady community with innovative displays of art that will get you stoned just looking at them. And on a more functional level, each piece made by hand transports the energy of the artist into each sesh – with the intention of the creator carrying the smoke and vapor into the lungs of a lucky recipient. It is an honor to be featuring the legendary Mothership Glass and Scott Deppe – who also came on @leaflifepodcast to talk about the history and vision of Mothership – along with a ton of other amazing glass artists in this visually enticing edition of the magazine. We have unique pieces spotlighted in all editions, with different artists highlighted in each, and I hope you take a look at our brand new website – leafmagazines.com – to see our complete gallery and tons of other unique content, podcasts, and the highlarious Stoney Baloney. Remember to buy American glass whenever possible, to support your local head shop or glass artist, and to always smoke from clean glass!

ebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ remarks on the supposed dangers of marijuana were widely condemned after he said at a press conference, “If you legalize marijuana, you’re going to kill your kids.” “These words didn’t elevate the discussion,” scolded the Lincoln Journal-Star in an op-ed. “Rather, his oversimplification of the topic ignored the pleas of parents with sick children – and that the legislation being debated later that day was specific to medical uses.” Despite the mild-mannered nature of the newspaper’s rebuke, the fact remains that Gov. Ricketts’ remarks weren’t just an “oversimplification,” of course – they were an outright falsehood. Nebraska, along with Idaho, is one of just two states left that have absolutely no protection for medical Cannabis patients, not even a lowly CBD law.

Many patients prefer vape pens for their convenience and quick effects. “This is by far our number one request,” CEO John Mueller of the Greenlight chain of dispensaries said. “It’s an exciting day for the industry.” Missouri dispensaries said they will be working to meet a big, pent-up demand from customers for the vape products.

awmakers on March 18 filed the latest bill to legalize Cannabis in Delaware. Pressure is greater than ever before on the General Assembly to pass it, according to Delaware Online, with neighboring states moving to legalize and with advocates citing the need for job growth to recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. House Bill 150, introduced by Rep. Ed Osienski (D-Newark), would allow adults 21 and older to buy up to an ounce of weed from a licensed seller. It would tax Cannabis at 15 percent, which is lower than most states that have legalized. Lawmakers want to remain competitive with nearby states such as New Jersey, and to cut down on illegal sales. State Auditor Kathy McGuiness’ office estimated Delaware could bring in $43 million a year from legal weed. The bill’s sponsors stress that Cannabis revenues are not a “stable revenue source,” especially with nearby states also establishing legal marijuana markets.

jaMES MONROE

16

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

James Monroe was an American statesman, lawyer and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He was also the fifth president of the country and apparently, a hashish smoker.

M

ONROE’S PRESIDENCY WAS SAID TO HAVE COINCIDED WITH WHAT WAS CALLED THE “ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS”

– a time (about a decade) when the people of the United States were said to have reflected a sense of national purpose and a desire for unity. During this time, Monroe sought to downplay partisan politics and even spoke of the altogether elimination of political parties. One of the most concrete examples of this “Era of Good Feelings” was Monroe’s so called “Goodwill Tour” of the New England states. On it, he won over many Americans who disagreed with the ideals of his so-called “Democratic-Republican” party in favor of the Federalist party at the time. This tour was written about in the Boston newspaper known as The Columbian Centinel and spoke to Monroe’s likeability: “Most men immediately liked him ... [in] manner he was rather formal, having an innate sense of dignity, which allowed no one to take liberties. Yet in spite of his formality, he had the ability to put men at their ease by his courtesy, lack of condescension, his frankness, and what his contemporaries looked upon as the essential goodness and kindness of heart which he always radiated.”

APR. 2021

Perhaps that likeability came from Monroe’s time as an American ambassador in France, where he openly smoked hashish – which was very much in vogue in France in the early 1800s. By all accounts, Monroe continued to consume Cannabis all the way up until his death at the ripe old age (for the time) of 73. Keep in mind that before the Prohibition Monroe Era of the early 1900s in America, continued Cannabis was not met with the same to consume social stigma that we’re working so very diligently to remove from our Cannabis all the collective consciousness. way up until his Perhaps James Monroe’s most death at 73. famous legacy was also inspired by the kind of opening of the mind that occurs when one is able to step away from conventional thought under the influence of Cannabis. Here we find the Monroe Doctrine – a policy that opposed colonialism in the United States and elsewhere. The doctrine stated that any intervention into the politics of the United States by foreign powers would be considered an act of hostility against America. Conversely, it also stated that the United States should recognize and not interfere with the politics of other burgeoning countries, and not meddle in the affairs of other established nations. While some of these notions are now a bit antiquated, given what we know about the disastrous effects of colonialism, this was a very forwardthinking idea. As with any of the U.S. Founding Fathers, looking from the future to the past demonstrates that most were very flawed men who exploited others (Monroe owned slaves), upheld white supremacy and a system that continued to steal from Native Americans. It is important to be aware of this – even if they were forward-thinking in their intoxicant of choice.

introduce into the human body a controlled dangerous substance.” While both marijuana and its psychoactive derivatives are Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, in 2016 after enacting the framework for medical Cannabis in Maryland, the Maryland General Assembly specifically added an affirmative defense for the possession of marijuana – meaning you cannot receive a paraphernalia charge if the substance you’re using it to consume is Cannabis. Sound ridiculous? Wait, it gets more preposterous. While there is an affirmative defense to possession of paraphernalia if you are intending to use it to ingest marijuana, there is no legal protection for the store that sold it to you. That is why a head, glass or vape shop has to kick you out if you start talking about any drugs in the store. If the intent of the use of the pipe is to ingest or inhale a CDS that is not marijuana – including concentrates and any Cannabis product in its non-botanical form – then the store has committed a crime in selling you the glass pipe. Confused? You should be. Not only do the laws against paraphernalia make no sense, they legitimately harm the dialogue that happens between a sales person and a prospective customer. In that way, the paraphernalia laws harm everyone – restricting the free flow of accurate information and creating an adversarial relationship, where secrecy is encouraged and store owners are incentivized to learn nothing about their clients.

Since 2008, Mike Rothman has counseled clients regarding Cannabis laws and regulations as the founder and principal of the Medical Cannabis Law Group and the Law Office of Mike Rothman in Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Rothman has testified on Cannabis laws and regulations before the Maryland House of Delegates, taught classes, and lobbied the federal government on behalf of patients and businesses. Mr. Rothman’s Law Office focuses on criminal defense, including use of the medical Cannabis defense.

“My stomach ulcers have been pretty bad for years. I have not been able to find relief at all with anything. And then a friend of mine had me try Extractioneering HTFSE vials. I cried the first day, because it had been so long since I hadn’t been in pain. I didn’t think it would work because, you know, the THC levels aren’t that high. But, it worked. And I don’t need to use that much. Just 2-4 drops in the morning and I’m good. It’s just a plus that the HTFSE relieved my anxiety and I just felt happy all day. - Jackson Hubbard, Graphic Artist

Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Does it get you high? A: Yes, HTFSE is not pure terpenes. It actually has an average of 65% THC, which means you do not even need to heat it before use. A lot of folks just put a drop on thier tongue and go. Q: How do I get it out of the vial?! A: There’s a few videos on the website that can show you “How-To,” but the best way is to take the cap off, heat the tip of the vial so it’s a little warmer than room-temperature and pour out 2 drops into your banger. Or you can just use a dab tool.

Brandon DeCamp Truth Dispensary INTERVIEW by MAX EARLY @LIFTED_STARDUST/OREGON LEAF PHOTOS by FLETCHER WOLD @FWOLD_PHOTOGRAPHY

APR. 2021

Well known for his authentic and inspiring passion for the Cannabis industry, Brandon DeCamp is the definition of the word OG. With a strong-willed go-getter attitude, DeCamp has been deeply rooted in the Oregon medical and recreational Cannabis scene for years upon years. He shares his favorite local glass artists and what drives him to be the incredible leader that he is in this month’s Stoner Owner feature!

HOW DID THE BRAND GET STARTED? WHEN DID YOU FIRST KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO OWN A DISPENSARY? As soon as Cannabis

was legalized in Colorado and Washington, I knew Oregon was next. I also knew that once it did, I was definitely going to pursue being a part of the industry. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT ESTABLISHING TRUTH DISPENSARY? I opened my first

dispensary, Herbal Remedies, in 2014 before the state legalized marijuana in 2015. Then three years later, I opened Truth Dispensary with my dad. HOW EXACTLY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE GLASS SCENE? WHOSE GLASS ART DO YOU HOLD CLOSE TO YOUR HEART? When I first

started smoking Cannabis, I was fascinated by all the local glass artists in the PNW. Tony Hernandez and Brent 503 are my two hometown favorite artists who specialize in Kleins and Ball rigs. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF BEING A DISPENSARY OWNER? With having a wife and three kids, and one on

the way, to me balancing work and home life is one of the hardest things about being a dispensary owner.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR FAMILY AND BUSINESS LIFE? I’m certainly not perfect, especially since every week can be different, but I strive to make sure the weekends belong to my family – even if that means I have to work 10 to 12 hours during the week.

“When I first started smoking Cannabis, I was fascinated by all the local glass artists in the PNW.”

IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Do your research. Start with a plan, set your goals, and

don’t get discouraged during the process because it will pay off in the end – especially if you put in the work, day in and day out.

A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

When he isn’t spending time tending to his prized orchid varieties, he’s running the show at Kings of Canna, a popular dispensary in the Northeast District of Portland known for its wide array of quality products and competitive price points. Since its conception, Darren has been on the frontlines of recreational Cannabis, opening the store, meeting with vendors, budtending and even checking IDs without batting an eye. He isn’t “The toughest thing the type of manager who about doing what I do hides behind a desk in an is determining which office removed from the beautiful flower to put into the shop, floor – instead, he’s the from which grower, type to speak with customers about their needs and what genetics we want to feature. “ and how he can improve their experience with Cannabis. Kings of Canna had a line out the door and to the street when I had the chance to stop by, proving how essential and appreciated they are in their local neighborhood. Darren said it best himself, he’s just “a kindhearted guy who loves all things Cannabis.”

How long have you been involved with Cannabis and how is the legal market different now than when recreational sales first began? I’ve been involved with Cannabis for most my life. I have worked in the Oregon Cannabis world for about 13 years now. In the beginning, it was a little wilder. Nowadays, the recreational Cannabis industry is more structured, and forever growing and evolving. What’s the toughest thing about your career? Honestly, the toughest thing about doing what I do is determining which beautiful flower to put into the shop, from which grower, and what genetics we want to feature. What do you enjoy the most in your career, essentially running Kings of Canna? I always enjoy educating and learning from others, as well as providing top shelf, quality, Oregon-grown Cannabis for an affordable price. I’m always striving to do my best, while taking the Cannabis experience to a higher level.

ENVIRONMENT & VIBE While strolling into Top Crop, the first thing I noticed was their incredible flower selection. Four beautiful wooden shelves showcase some of the most well-recognized and sought-after brands in the industry. On three flat screen TVs you will find their entire menu, offering just about every different kind of product you could hope to see. On another flat screen, Top Crop provides a ton of educational information. Their display cases include local glass and smoking accessories like Puffco, health-conscious products such as topicals and FECO, as well as pre-rolls and edibles. You can find all of their extracts and concentrates in a very well-lit display case, flaunting their mouth-watering color hues and consistencies. It is important to note that all of their hash gets stored away in a fridge to preserve maximum freshness.

HISTORY & VALUES

32

After meeting in college while studying business at the University of Idaho, owners Matt Chadwick and Ryan Ford connected and bonded over their passion for the Cannabis plant. One day, Chadwick received a phone call from Kevin Miller, Owner of Frost Factory and now partner farm of Top Crop, to join forces on a dispensary operation. Seeing the opening to provide Eugene’s community with higher-end Cannabis products, owners Mike Hanigan, Bryan and Matt Chadwick all put their heads together and opened up the first Top Crop location. The Eugene spot is now managed superbly by Dane Winn and Ryan Ford. Fast forward four years and they’re now opening their third location in Corvallis, in addition to their phenomenal Ontario shop, managed by Nick Spoor and Austin Chadderdon. This small family-owned company run by a group of close friends aims to remain open-minded to all new brands, all the while priding themselves on their ability to seek out valuable, longlasting relationships with their cutting-edge vendors. As Ford said, “Quality is the name of the game.”

PRODUCT SELECTION

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

Where do we even get started? The number of connoisseur options here is almost overwhelming, in the best way imaginable. Unlike other stores in the Eugene area, Top Crop focuses on carrying very high-quality products, including brands like Echo Electuary, Bo’s Nose Knows and Happy Cabbage. During our visit, my eyes drew immediately to Frost Factory’s Orangotang, Focus North’s Now n’ Later, Deep Creek’s Ice Queen and Evan Creek’s 707 Headband. If edibles are your go-to method of consumption, you can expect to find brands like Crop Circle Chocolates, Elbe’s Cake Balls and Mellow Vibes products. Additionally, Top Crop offers a hefty amount of pre-rolls, including Decibel Farms and TKO. That said, they also provide a large amount of price-effective, yet quality options for those looking to save a few bucks.

BUDTENDERS & SPECIALS Amid dispensaries becoming more and more like 7-11s these days, Top Crop is a refreshing breath of air with their high attention put towards customer service. During our visit, we experienced their budtenders connecting with their customers on a first-name basis. We could tell that their staff aims to give every person that walks through the doors a personal and unmatched experience. As their close-knit team expressed to us, they all feel as if though their co-workers are family. On Monday, you can take 15% off edibles, while Tuesday and Friday offer 10% off a quarter-ounce, 15% off a half-ounce, and 20% off a full ounce (excludes $6 grams). Take 15% off tinctures, topicals and RSO on Wednesday, 10% off cartridges and batteries on Thursday, and Saturday providing a 20% discount on any dabble products. Last but not least, the entire store is 10% off on Sunday.

CANNABIS FOR ADHD

Alyn Moncsko

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

@MONCSKO

“I Use Weed for My ADHD” A Qualitative Analysis of Online Forum Discussions on Cannabis Use and ADHD” PLOS ONE

This month’s patient profile features a Monmouth-born, Benddwelling being by the name of Alyn Moncsko. Around 2012, while pursuing the arts as a freshman in college, Moncsko began consuming Cannabis. “Discovering weed at that time was like looking through a kaleidoscope! It allowed new and different perspectives and ideas to flourish,” she says. These days, you can still find her “creating just about anything,” from photography to landscaping. But Cannabis has taken on a new meaning since her 2014 diagnosis and today, Moncsko is exploring the plant’s properties as a complementary and (occasionally) alternative tool for ADHD.

“The effect of Cannabis on the stage of my conscious mind is like sound-proof padding in a room whose constant echoes make it impossible to hear one train of thought at a time.” Can you tell me a little bit about how ADHD affects your daily life? Many people don’t know

that ADHD consists of sub-types and that not every patient is stereotypically hyper. I’m a combination of hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive, with an emphasis on the latter. I often find myself consumed in the chattery multitude of my thoughts while, for example, staring in the mirror and twirling a piece of hair for 30 minutes. I find it hard to focus on things that don’t utterly seize my attention, which means my school books are filled with more doodles and creative ideas than class notes.

How do you feel Cannabis use affects your ADHD? The effect of Cannabis

on the stage of my conscious mind is like sound-proof padding in a room whose constant echoes make it impossible to hear one train of thought at a time. These new ‘acoustics’ also help absorb and level my anxiety in ways that have been paramount to my mental health.

How do you incorporate Cannabis use into your life? Because ADHD brains

tend to have less dopamine and fewer dopamine receptors and transporters than other brains, I need all the help I can get when it comes to motivation. Most days I use Cannabis as my endof-the-day treat. It’s an indicator that I’ve finished daily tasks or work, and that ‘me time’ has begun. On free days, it helps me focus on my creative endeavors and personal projects.

What would you say to other folks interested in exploring Cannabis as an alternative or complementary medicine? Some qualitative analyses

have shown Cannabis to be effective in place of various ADHD medications, and even indicate that Cannabis use is effective in reducing anxiety and depression in people with ADHD. Specific cannabinoids and terpenes have also been identified as having higher positive results than others. There is so much more room for conversation and study on this topic! All of the studies I’ve found have shown decent (though qualitative) self-reported evidence that Cannabis could be (or is) very effective for many people with ADHD. In order to build quantitative data (instead of qualitative, self-reports), we need more conversation and studies.

DANIA CABELLO OJO DE LA SOL

LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

38

Dania Cabello wants us to take the power of healing back into our own hands. As the owner and operator of Oakland topical brand Ojo De La Sol, Cabello has navigated a slow, intentional road to bringing her very personal line of products to the regulated public market. Combining her own experiences as a former professional athlete, an herbalist, and her family’s own history with traditional medicines, Cabello’s Ojo De La Sol is currently making a name for itself for all the right reasons. With an expansion to Los Angeles looming, Cabello spoke with California Leaf about the “Sol” supply chain she’s established and her efforts to destigmatize Cannabis use for athletes.

APr. 2021

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND OJO DE LA SOL? One of the things that has become clear to me is that Ojo De La Sol is really a synthesis and a braiding of all of these components that I spend most of my time learning and reflecting on. It all falls into this category of healing and what I call critical wellness, and my personal journey of learning how to heal myself. WAS THAT A JOURNEY THAT STARTED WITH YOUR SOCCER CAREER? As a pro athlete, it is common practice to overmedicate with ibuprofen and to have our bodies injected with cortisone so we can play, because it numbs the pain from the physical beating that our bodies take … that’s become normalized. There’s this ‘no pain, no gain’ philosophy. I played Division I soccer at UC Berkeley for four years and then I returned as a graduate student in education to really hone in on the language of critical pedagogy and the ways in which we think about freedom – both with and through the body. During my last season “DURING MY LAST SEASON of pro soccer, in 2011 with the OF PRO SOCCER, IN 2011 Bay Area Breeze, I decided to WITH THE BAY AREA BREEZE, take ownership of my healing I DECIDED TO TAKE by decolonizing my health OWNERSHIP OF MY HEALand indigenizing the practices that were always a part of my ING BY DECOLONIZING MY life. I’d been working with an HEALTH AND INDIGENIZING urban farmer for 15 years and I THE PRACTICES THAT WERE ALWAYS A PART OF MY LIFE.” wanted to explore what it would look like to make alternative medicine outside of smoking the flower. I had a chronic heel injury, so I started with a topical and then I was sharing that topical with family. My family shared it with their friends and literally, within about a month, I was getting outreach from aunts and uncles and people I hadn’t seen for years asking about it.

39

WHAT PRODUCTS DOES OJO HAVE AVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT? Right now, I make two topicals. They are my pain relief salve, which has about 300mg of THC to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and neuropathy. It can also help with muscle tension and skin regeneration. That’s been my top seller for a decade. The other is an Epsom salt soak with about 75mg of Cannabis. Both of my products are two of the strongest on the market but that wasn’t a strategy – it was actually just me delivering on what’s been the most effective for my loyal customers. As far as availability goes, you can get Ojo in most Northern California markets, plus, Ojo is also now available in Southern California through a direct-to-consumer platform called AllezOop. OJO DE LA SOL IS PART OF A BAY AREA COMMUNITY OF BLACK AND BROWN OWNED CANNABIS BUSINESSES THAT SEEM TO REALLY SUPPORT EACH OTHER IN A WAY THAT’S UNIQUE TO THIS INDUSTRY AT LARGE. WOULD YOU AGREE? As a medicine maker, I can’t necessarily spend all of my time lobbying and writing law. That’s why we have to be a team of people that have different fields of expertise. I really leaned into that aspect with what I now call the ‘Sol’ system. That’s the ecosystem that Ojo De La Sol lives in and it’s the only reason why Ojo is still in existence. It’s not because of some large investment. It’s because of the friendships and the efficacy of the medicine that I make. That’s what allowed Ojo to move slowly and grow at a time when it’s really difficult to get started in this industry without the normal financial backing that comes with this big, billion-dollar industry.

Continued from pg. 43

“I had been coming to Bend since the ‘90s to visit Paul and while sharing a joint at his brother’s wedding in 2013, we got really stoked about the idea of starting a Cannabis farm in that beautiful area,” Reber said. Later, while getting his foot in the door working as a budtender in the Colorado medical industry, Reber met Chris Mallory – now Director of Cultivation of Choice Farms – while serving him flowers at his shop in Denver. As their friendship continued to blossom and develop, Mallory went on to work for the same brand that Reber did, where he worked his way up to become one of the company’s cultivation managers. After the news broke regarding Oregon going recreational, Samuelson and Reber knew they had to put their plan into action. Fast forward to 2016 and Reber added other partners: Tim Samuelson, Paul’s brother, and friends Ray Gordon and Morgan Karlos – and officially formed Choice Farms.

hen it comes to their farming practices, they do not cut corners or play any games. Their garden is 100% organic, utilizing homemade veganic microbial compost teas and Dragonfly Earth Medicine. Their innovative Integrated Pest Management program consists of 100% organic fungal drenches during the plant’s vegetative state, as well as releasing ladybugs to combat any would-be pests on the foliage. Choice Farms utilizes top dress kits and dry amendments from Build-a-Soil. When connecting all of these facets in an ideal environment, the resin production and terpene profile increase significantly. Here, it’s important to note that all applications are simply for preventative measures – not to combat any infestation. We quite simply could not get enough of all the genetics Choice Farms had to offer. In a market where a ton of companies are growing more or less the same few strains, this garden had a ton of new and show-stopping cultivars for our team to experience – with meticulously selected genetics from the uppermost breeders in the industry, including Solfire Gardens, Swamp Boys Seeds and TG Genetics, just to name a few. During our visit, we had the unparalleled opportunity of seeing Choice Farms during one of their extensive pheno hunts. On the first grow tray to the left, there were five different phenos of Hood Candyz, a cross of Runtz x Why U Gelly by Solfire Genetics. It was an extraordinary experience seeing the drastic differences in phenotypic expressions between each pheno. With some providing sweet and creamy notes from the Gelato lineage, and others producing petrol and skunk-like nuances from the Don Mega genealogy, it’s sure to be a tough decision picking a winner. Not to fret, as Mallory and Samuelson pride themselves on their ability to sift through many different strains and find the ones that are most suitable for their Next G3N Greenhouse. Other genetics include Da Vinci’s Illuminati (Da Vinci OG x 13 (Purple Kush x Trainwreck), Horace (Banana OG x Nigerian), and Spumoni. Another astounding facet of this company is its soil recycling program. They currently take old soil from their operation and incorporate it into their vegetable garden. Their goal? To grow a ton of produce and give back to local shelters during the summer and fall months. Additionally, Choice Farms aims to “close the loop” on soil inputs and production, appropriating permaculture methods on their breathtaking land. As far as what the future holds for Choice Farms, well, they have some tricks up their sleeves. Be on the lookout for hash collaborations, three additional greenhouses, and an indoor facility for mature and vegetative plants coming soon. They feel very fortunate to have developed some amazing partnerships in the industry and are always looking to see where new possibilities exist. The door is always open for a friendly chat – just like the one that started Choice Farms years ago.

The future of Cannabis is in the flavors. Hailing from the highlands of Central Oregon, April’s Strain of the Month is an exotic top shelf selection – the sweet and sultry, Strawberries & Cream grown by Bend’s young wave maker Sam Gesten. His company, Highland Provisions, has been splashing onto the scene with the help of their superstar solventless hash maker, Casey McAlarney.

H LEAFMAGAZINES.COM

ighland is a single-source mainstay that we suggest everyone get acquainted with, as Sam and the boys appear to only just be getting started. Awards do not come easy in this business and to receive a 1st Place trophy in the Oregon Growers Cup within two years of entering the rec game is something we deem remarkably impressive. This flavor packed, mouth wateringly sweet Strawberry crossed with Cookies & Cream F2 by Mike at Exotic Genetix took years of hunting to find the most true to form Strawberry terp profile in existence – and by the smell and taste of things – he may have accomplished just that. I have never encountered a sweeter scent from a strain of Cannabis, with this one bringing the exact smell of the dried strawberries you might find in a Kellogg’s cereal. Following the energizing burst of berry flavor, trailing notes of soothing and sweet homemade whipped cream creep in. These scents accurately translate to the potent, euphoric, smileinducing, calming and well-rounded effects gained from smoking this delicious strain.

APR. 2021

A balanced hybrid for people who love balanced hybrids, with enough sativa to stay alert and enough indica to take the edge off – after smoking this flower almost exclusively for a week – I can say with confidence that this strain’s versatility is next level. Whether first thing in the morning kicking off a long day of snowboarding, or at the end of a hard day’s work in the zen moments before bedtime, Highland’s dynamic Strawberries & Cream delivered the way I needed it to. The smallest bowl pack had me at such a heightened state that I actually became inspired to take a break from dabbing while in possession of this precious flower. When I put this lime green bud into my grinder, I was awestruck by the amount of kief that was generated. As unique as it is unmistakable, Strawberries & Cream delivers an unexpected amount of deliciously sweet, almost candy-like flavor – offering a level of fruity berryness that may only come around once a year. 23.3% THC | BRED BY EXOTIC GENETIX

After many years of research, Japanese scientist Dr. Masaru Emoto has shown the world the powers of positive thinking and its immense impact on the water molecule – where his studies have concluded that our ideas and feelings have the magical power to alter the molecular structure of water. Much like water, there is a strong synergistic relationship between the incredible energy encapsulated within Mothership studios and the glass art that they produce.

Their remarkable and one-of-a-kind designs include the Klein, Ball Rig, Torus, Egg, Exosphere, BKT(Ball Rig/ Klein/Torus), and FKT(Fab/Klein/Torus). They are now applying their incredible skills to dry pipes, glassware and soon-to-be, home goods. This close-knit, family-owned, and operated business is home to 35+ employees, including Scott Deppe’s mother, Alisha, and four of his siblings named Eric, Travis, Katie, and Jayson. Each team member provides a diverse and unique skill set, which helps tie together the organic, symbiotic connection found at this otherworldly studio. “Using wizard-like techniques, Deppe has reinvented the wheel when it comes to fuming with his breathtaking Hologram series.” Can you shed some light on how you brought a scientific approach to the glass pipe industry? How do you concoct some of these mind-melting designs? With the immense love for Cannabis and hash that I have, I am always searching for a better way to enjoy the two. I nerd out on things hard and am always trying to create a more enjoyable experience for myself. It’s a lot of experimenting – by seeing what’s out there in different facets of nature, engines and technology – amongst many other things. As water acts with a mind of its own and wants to do certain things, we incorporate its natural flow state into our pieces. Overall, this provides a very high-quality function and flow for our pipes. When coming up with concepts for the incredible Hologram series, where do you draw inspiration? Over the years, there have been many transformative universal messages that I have received. We are constantly searching for ways to tell folklore stories through our glass that have a deeper meaning. In collaboration with our in-house artist Max McNett and sandblast expert Erin Bohn, we work together to bring the industry some of the most innovative glass art imaginable. Our skilled and artistic staff often have very imaginative ideas that end up projected into concepts for a hologram series. The unique relationship shared between our artisan glass blowers helps us work together and generate an infinite amount of ideas. With our up-and-coming Catalyst series, we depicted the classic Stoned Ape theory. This thesis touches on monkeys eating mushrooms in the savannah, where they furthered the evolutionary process by altering their prefrontal cortex. Our Strange Deities, like our other series, are heavily influenced by space-like objects, as well as crop circles. I see that your company is experimenting with glassware and laser-etching of wood. What new expansions do you see Mothership Glass expanding into in the future? We will be getting into some home decor, including intricate coffee tables and chandeliers that will tie together your sophisticated sesh table and connoisseur ambiance. One day, we hope to have the rooms in your house decked out with an enlightened style, matched by the works of art that we offer.

LaceFace

Based in Ashland, Oregon, Lacey “LaceFace” Walton has been exploring her passion for the color, fluidity, and form of glass since she began working on the torch in 2004, masterfully creating works of functional art that stimulate the creative mind and push boundaries on contemporary art. When asked what

her inspiration is for the unique, curved style featured in her work, Lacey said, “I believe glass holds the energy of life with its unique relationship to the powerful elements of Fire and Air. My artworks strive to present natural beauty by portraying life that occurs in the physical world like animals, flowers and the human form. The spiritualistic and ritualistic quality of pipes has always inspired me to create a higher form of functional art that can be portrayed as sacred, statuesque or shamanic. The medium of glass, in combination with ancient sacraments, has given our society a way to reach a higher consciousness, while also providing communion with each other by bringing people together to perform a ritual as old as human history itself – smoking.” @LACEFACEGLASS

WASHINGTON Making a living doing what you love is paramount to a true artist. So when High Grade Mike attended Barter Faire in 1999, where he witnessed first-hand a community of creators making their living by crafting unique works, his aha moment arrived. All that was needed to set course was a torch of his own – which he scooped up a couple years later – and in 2005, the journey began to take shape.

High Grade Mike’s studio is packed with all types

of art, but his true love is creating glass masterpieces in bongs, rigs, bowls, cups and other functions of glassware. You’ll notice in his details that there’s a mixing of line work with wigwag that is inspired by space and color, especially those of the Crayola nature. In his studio, the background music will always be a source of inspiration that he blends into the busy pieces, through the love of reggae and other conscious vibes. @HIGHGRADEMIKE

for producing some of the state’s best Cannabis, Baisch’s new home was the catalyst behind his love of the plant and blowing functional glass. Although Baisch was actively producing glasswork in his early 20s, he put his passion aside to start a family. After years of working in landscaping, the perils of COVID-19 put his small business on the ropes and signaled his return to glass. “The landscaping business was falling on its face. I mean, who wants to call somebody to mow the lawn or cut down a tree when you have to worry about a pandemic,” explains Baisch.

enjoyed making them, because “donuts make people happy.” During this time, he decided to rent out a section of his garage so that his friend could build a small glass studio, with the promise that the friend would teach him to blow glass.

It wasn’t long before he started to get the hang of it and decided to try and make his first Donut Bowl. While selling his pieces of glass to local headshops, he met his girlfriend Sarah Marblesbee, who was working as a manager at one of the stores. That was 10 years ago. They now share a studio in Portland where she also blows her own glass pipes, as well as adding her business degree and background to his creativity and workaholic style. Some glass artists teased him about making Donut Bowls, but that didn’t stop Brian. Now his Donut glass pipes, rigs and pendants are collected and sold throughout the world. 3 GENERATIONS OF GLASS BLOWERS A FAMILY BUSINESS

Mike Miller learned how to create glass art from his father while they were following Rainbow Festivals. Mike’s dad, a glassblower known as “Capt,” bought a school bus in 1995, loaded his five kids into it and started teaching them the trade, while also selling glass pieces at different musical events.

Mike tells Leaf Nation, “I was blowing and selling glass before I knew how to read, and teaching people how to blow glass by age 13.” After converting his home garage into a glass studio, Mike and his girlfriend Hanna (@sirenglass), plus three other glassblowers now make pieces for the store and for online sales. Mike’s dad, who no longer blows glass due to health issues, is often at the studio watching Mike and his oldest son creating glass art with pride. For the past five years, Mike has organized glass blowing demonstrations at events such as the Community Bonfire. He’s a licensed Maine caregiver and operates the Maine Daze Smoke Shop in Portland. “It’s all about providing for my family and helping people. It’s our family business.”

MAGIC NUMBER @DR I NK MAGI CNUMBER DR I NK MAGI CNUMBER.COM

If you’re looking for the fastest way to get as high as humanly possible, look no further than Magic Number’s 1,000mg THC tincture. I was fortunate

enough to experience their tiny tincture’s powerful effects, and they aren’t for the lighthearted or for those questioning their tolerance. If you were to judge this book by its cover you wouldn’t think 1,000mg of THC could fit inside such a small bottle, and you would be in for a rude awakening … or should I say, slumber? To put it bluntly, this tincture smacks. This tiny powerhouse is incredibly discreet for how many cannabinoids it carries, and it fits perfectly into a back pocket or pocketbook without taking up too much space – leaving more room for the other Cannabis goodies in your life! The passion fruit flavor complements the live resin taste to create a perfectly nuanced balance of tropical herbs and fruit, so dangerously tasty that you really have to think about how much THC you’re consuming in each sip. Knowing this, I decided to down half the bottle, about 500mg, to truly experience its potency without completely blasting myself into outer space. That was the intended goal, anyway. As per usual, I overestimated myself and, more importantly, my tolerance. This isn’t a product meant for the casual consumer or for anyone that wants to execute a number of activities immediately following their high. Knowing that even with my above-average tolerance I would be feeling the heavy effects, I drank half the bottle right after dinner – giving myself some time to feel the effects without dedicating an entire day towards the high. Within a couple hours I could feel the THC weighing down through the backs of my eyelids. After battling my body to peel itself off the couch, I finally succumbed to my slumberous feat and wrapped myself in the comfort of my bedding. What happened next will surprise you, mainly because it’s still unknown: I didn’t wake up until noon the next day! I know this is labeled as a sativa product, but it’s so incredibly potent that after a certain milligram, it will keep you down with no extra effort involved. Feeling more rested than I can remember and following an absurd amount of caffeine, I finally took back control of my day without feeling too groggy or foggy afterward. This Magic Number tincture really proved to me that there are still products on the market that will shock even the heartiest stoners, paving the way for the other heavyweights that need a recreational smack to the face every now and then. It’s so tasty that it’s realistically hard to keep the little glass bottle away, but make sure you calculate your milligrams accordingly or else you may actually hibernate until summer. Stoners be warned: This product is for high tolerances!

his month’s Tannins and Terpenes pairing are quite literally made for each other. Oakshire Brewing and Focus North Gardens have teamed up to create the tempting Tropicana Cookies Smoothie Sour Ale – a sippable representation of the famous GSC and Tangie cross. Originally bred by Harry Palms, Tropicana Cookies is known for its tantalizing citrus profile, sweet Cookie notes and subtle spice. Focus North Gardens fine tunes this flower into long, densely-frosted nugs flaunting flecks of deep purple. It’s a strain that offers an uplifting and pleasant experience, from the nose to the effects. At first sniff, strong citrus tones are followed by a beautiful, candy-like aroma. But the strain’s GSC lineage becomes more noticeable as it’s smoked, adding a creamy confection kick. A euphoric focus often follows consumption and as anxiety slips aside, a blanket of relaxation wraps itself around the body – minus the heavyheadedness of sleepier strains. Call it a solid daytime toker for the seasoned smoker! As you reach for that post-rip sip, Oakshire’s Smoothie Sour Ale boasts a beautiful deep reddish-purple color. It’s hard not to notice the fruit pulp dancing deliciously about the glass. Much like the flower, this ale offers a strong citrus smell as your nose reaches the glass, but it’s balanced out by the sweeter notes that follow. Hints of cinnamon tingle the tongue, adding a gentle complexity without complicating the flavor. To concoct the Tropicana Cookies profile, the folks at Oakshire begin with their base Smoothie Sour (containing marshmallow and vanilla bean), then condition the ale on blackberry, tangerine and Cara Cara orange purees, 50-pounds of Girl Scout Cookies, and a smidge of cinnamon. The result is an astonishingly accurate replica of this flower’s flavor – a beautiful balance of tangy citrus and sweet berry that presents the perfect pairing with Focus North’s flower.

American Pipe Dreams When it comes to glass smokeware, it doesn’t get much more old school than Jerome Baker Designs. JBD helped to establish the modern glass industry and became the largest bong producer in the world … that is, until Operation Pipe Dreams caused the company to go up in smoke. Now, nearly 20 years later, they’ve risen from the ashes to reclaim their place of prominence in the glass game. PYREX PIONEERS The Jerome Baker story begins, unsurprisingly, in the parking lot of a Dead show in Massachusetts in July 1989. It was there that a college student from Miami named Jason Harris met a hippie pipe maker from Eugene, Oregon named Bob Snodgrass. Known as the Godfather of Glass, Snodgrass invented two groundbreaking glassblowing techniques: fuming (aka color-changing glass) and the “pushed-in bowl.” His individualism and ingenuity would inspire and influence all those to follow.

APR. 2021

Jerome Baker Designs

“There was just some magical attraction to Bob—he’s just that kind of being,” Harris says. “He was the coolest dude I’d ever met. I just wanted to be like him instantly.” After graduating in 1991, Harris enrolled in the art program at the University of Oregon, moved out to Eugene and reached out to Snodgrass. In the months that followed, Harris saved his money, bought a torch, and began studying under Snodgrass as one of only 10 apprentices. “There was an energy in the air surrounding that scene at the time,” he recalls fondly. “It was magical.” In 1993, Harris and fellow apprentice Chris Shave (founder of Jah Creations Glass) started working together—first in a small garage down the street from Snodgrass, then in a larger studio with another fellow student, Dan K. It was Dan who introduced the group to the big Carlisle CC Burner torch and heavy wall glass, as well as the “wrap and rake” technique—all of which were game-changers for the budding industry. Harris and Shave sold their pipes on the Dead tour, as well as at headshops in New York. To set himself apart and earn more money, Harris began making bongs rather than pipes—a technique he learned from Snoddy’s top student, Cameron Tower. He also took advantage of his mom’s flight attendant privileges to fly around the world and study glass art—working at glass shops in Italy, Germany, and even as far as India.

He also took courses at the esteemed Pilchuck glass school in Seattle, where he continued to hone his skills and expand his horizons. Then in 1995, he and partner Jordan Schefter formed their own company, which Harris decided to call Jerome Baker Designs—“Jerome,” an homage to Jerry Garcia who had recently died, and “Baker,” as in someone who gets “baked.” “I wanted to have a brand name that everybody could get behind—something besides just my own name.” One of JBD’s trademark styles was the Mothership—an orb-like base with a long shaft and a “snap and pull” downstem (a flared tube with a rubber seal that you pull out to carb)—an idea they borrowed from the Graffix bongs of the time. Unlike heady pieces, in which individual artists create unique works of art, JBD focused on production pieces, with various artists in their shop crafting different components and combining them in assembly-line fashion. This proved highly successful: By 1999, they’d become the largest smokeware company in the world—employing 70 glassblowers and earning $4 million a year.

true and I can admit it. I do it a lot. I mean, not out loud so much … well OK, out loud. But at least I’m hyperconscious about maintaining the flailing arms to conceal any evidence of my attempt to reign victorious in the current internal debate. But doesn’t everyone respond to those nagging inner voices with some form of discourse? I mean, it is part of being human to socially interact whether it is with a person, a pet, or a volleyball with palm shoots for hair named Hanes. Wait, what I meant was Wilson. Hanes was his other friend. And by nagging, I mean it never stops. The conjecture feels like a perpetual flow, with the impatient expectation of logical responses. Because if you’re a critical thinker or even someone who questions the meaning of your existence, you’re hardwired to answer reasonable inquiries – whether or not they’re self-provoked. You can only ignore yourself for so long. They say that there are three necessities in life to survive: food, water and companionship. And in these times of fewer and fewer options for companions, sometimes you’ve got to turn to yourself for a good chat. And I’m my own bestie – especially on those Saturday mornings that begin with a dab of Green Queen and a cup of coffee. Bam! Me, Myself and Irene are off to a roaring start, gossiping it up while the eggs get fried, the lawn gets mowed, and the Stoney Baloney gets wrote. First, there’s the voice who offers advice, then the one who loves to criticize, followed by the one who offers condolence, etc. Of course, as I continue to work on the royal “we” through self-care, the rebuts are often careful considerations for the emotional, sensitive myself. Except for the times when I feel like being a brat. But let’s not bring him into it. Hey, I’ve gotta go. I’m receiving a butt dial from me.
