Eugene, Oregon attorney Mike Arnold, after an accomplished career of nearly two decades, has left his law firm for a job as a marijuana grower.

Arnold founded One Gro in February with his business partner, PJ Martinez, reports the Associated Press. They are operating on a 50acre farm near the fork of the EUGENE ATTORNEY Willamette and Row rivers.

NEW STUDY FINDS Smoking Marijuana Improves Cognitive Performance

Marijuana doesn’t impair, and in many cases, actually improves executive functioning, an area of cognitive performance, according to a new study led by Harvard Medical School affiliate McLean Hospital.

The study, “Splendor in the Grass?

A Pilot Study Assessing the Impact of Medical Marijuana on Executive Function,” led by Staci Gruber, Ph.D., also explored whether patients experienced improved cognitive functioning, reports Cynthia Than at Inc. “After three months of medical marijuana treatment, patients actually performed better, in terms of their ability to perform certain cognitive tasks, specifically those mediated by the frontal cortex,” Dr. Gruber said.

A new report released on July 11 by the Marijuana Arrest Research Project, commissioned by the Drug Policy Alliance, shows that marijuana possession arrests under Mayor Bill de Blasio continue to be marked by extremely high racial disparities, as was the case under the Bloomberg and Giuliani administrations.

The report, Unjust and Unconstitutional: 60,000 Jim Crow Marijuana Arrests in Mayor de Blasio’s New York, shows that despite a change in mayoral administrations and police commissioners, the NYPD continues to make large numbers of unjust and racially-targeted marijuana arrests. The report is based on data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Most people arrested are young

and executive function, so if Cannabis products relieve anxiety, it makes sense that a patient’s cognitive function improves. Chronic pain also impairs cognitive performance, especially in tasks requiring executive function, so a reduction in pain level likely increases concentration and cognitive performance.

“Symptom improvement may therefore result in improved cognitive performance,” the authors wrote.

“Interestingly, two previous studies have noted a positive association between a history of marijuana use and improved cognitive performance on measures of psychomotor speed, working memory, executive functioning and verbal learning in patients with bipolar disorder compared to patients without a history of marijuana use.”

Blacks and Latinos – even though studies consistently show young whites use marijuana at higher rates.

Despite Mayor de Blasio’s campaign promise to end racially-biased policing, in 2016 marijuana possession was New York City’s fourth most commonly charged criminal offense. Black and Latino New Yorkers continue to comprise 85 percent of the more than 60,000 people arrested for low-level marijuana possession on Mayor de Blasio’s watch.

“President Obama, Governor Cuomo, former Mayor Ed Koch and candidate Bill de Blasio all strongly criticized the NYPD’s racist marijuana possession arrests,” said report author and Queens College professor Harry Levine. “Yet the most progressive mayor in the modern history of New York is unable to stop them? Really?”

State Patrol: Driver Had 54 Times the Legal THC Limit Results from a blood test on a driver arrested in May by the Washington State Patrol (WSP) showed he had 54 times the legal limit for marijuana’s most active ingredient in his bloodstream, according to authorities.

That’s the highest level recorded in Washington state in at least eight years, reports KOMO News.

A trooper started looking for the driver, a 53-year-old man from Lynnwood, after witnesses called to report a hit-and-run crash near the King-Snohomish County line, according to Trooper Heather Axtman.

Witnesses continued to follow the driver until a state trooper and a Lynnwood police officer pulled him over. In July, the WSP’s toxicology lab tested the driver’s blood and found the THC level to be 270 nanograms, which is 54 times the legal limit of five nanograms for driving.

That limit, it should be noted, is set absurdly low, and has no correlation with impairment, according to science.

Axtman said the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office is currently deciding what charges to file against the man.

I recommend bringing swim goggles but also being conscious of where your head is.

Your eyes won’t ever be below the surface but tilting your head the wrong direction or sitting up too quickly may cause water to run off your hair and onto your face.

Mind the learning curve. I never floated

with goggles and didn’t have any problems with salty eyes on my second and third floats, but goggles can put your mind at ease so you can fully relax into the experience. Under the influence of Cannabis you might momentarily forget that the water around you contains a ton of salt.

stand and utilize the experience. If you’re looking to supplement your mental health routine, I highly recommend trying a float session or two each month. I plan to continue floating because there is so much more to learn and experience in the tank. Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

Frances mcdormand Although not yet a household name, Frances McDormand remains one of America’s most accomplished actresses.

She is among the few American performers to have achieved the “Triple Crown of Acting” winning an Oscar, Tony and Emmy award through her career. The wife of director and writer Joel Coen, of the famous Coen brothers, McDormand has appeared in many of her husband’s films, including Raising Arizona, Fargo and more recently Hail, Caesar! She’s been a fixture on Broadway since the ‘80s.

At times, McDormand has been vocal about her use of Cannabis. In 2003, she appeared on the cover of High Times magazine holding a joint and wearing a Cannabis leaf T-shirt. In the interview, she talks about her personal life, acting career and her thoughts on Cannabis.

“I’m a recreational pot-smoker,” she told the magazine.

“Because it’s not a constant in my life, I don’t say it should be made legal so it’s more available. But from a medical point of view — I have friends who need to use it — why should they have to look too hard for the thing that makes them better? So from that point of view, it’s like, ‘Please, what is the problem?” Of course, this was 2003, long before there was any real notion that Cannabis would ever be legalized in our lifetimes in the United States.

In the interview she notes that she started smoking Cannabis in college, at Bethany College in West Virginia in the late 1970s.

“The problem with pot, McDormand said, was that “there has never been enough of a distinction between marijuana and other drugs.

In the classic, weird hygiene movies from high school everything led to depravity—marijuana, sex, coffee! There was no distinction made between the effects of one thing. So it’s always been lumped in with drugs in general.”

While these statements may seem a bit tame by today’s Cannabis activist standards – one should remember that just for an actress of her prestige that coming out in a magazine like High Times during the Bush era was a very radical stance.

It wasn’t until 2014, just after Colorado and Washington had legalized recreational Cannabis, that McDormand spoke again about the subject. She seemed to have changed her stance on legalization.

In an interview with the Daily Beast, she revealed an affinity for LSD. “It was always recreational, and it never became a part of my daily existence,” she said. “But I really, really enjoyed LSD. And I really enjoyed mushrooms very much. It’s unfortunate, I think, that drugs were not handled properly. Politically, they’ve been used to separate the economic classes. Thankfully, it’s all getting fixed now with the marijuana laws.”

WHEN DID YOU FIRST EXPERIENCE CANNABIS? The first time I experienced Cannabis firsthand was smoking it with my sisters after stealing it from my dad’s stash when I was around 14 or 15 years old.

I remember going for a car ride and focusing on telephone wires a lot but I also remember being a little let down because my sisters had always described acid-like experiences whenever they smoked. I ended up blogging about it on my not so private “Deadjournal” account and my dad eventually found it and I got in trouble. The funny thing was, he was just mad that I’d stolen. He ended up gifting me weed for Christmas! It was so strong that I spent two hours in a closet and couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t think I smoked Cannabis again until I was 18 or 19 after that experience.

It opened up my mind to things I may not have necessarily always been open to and I think the same can be said about Cannabis. For some, Cannabis is still very much a “taboo” subject much like the adult industry, though things are changing! I think one of my favorite things about this job is being able to provide a safe space for people to ask questions and gain knowledge so they can make the best decision for themselves and get the experience they’re looking for.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONSUME? I like flower best, but I’ll use a pen out on the go. I have a frustratingly high tolerance for edibles which can be a bummer.

As storefronts have popped up around the state over the past year, the Cannabis retail industry is slowly but surely figuring out what pleases customers. It may seem obvious, but one of the simple things that sets retail professionals apart in this industry is how they treat their customers.

The most important thing for me is to listen to what someone’s past experience with Cannabis is and what they’re hoping to gain from future experiences with it. WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP’S APPROACH DIFFERENT? Our main goal is to make sure every patron feels like they were well cared for and valued rather than just a customer walking through the door to buy legal Cannabis. My coworkers are absolutely incredible and the vibe in all of our stores is so positive and welcoming and I thoroughly enjoy being a part of that atmosphere. We try to shy away from the traditional categories of strains such as indicas, sativas and hybrids. We try to focus more on the feeling that strain will provide.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

I’m just a big ol’ boring homebody that smokes a lot of weed and hangs out with her dogs! I spend a lot of my time embroidering and doing crafty things, I could spend hours in a fabric store. I love to cook and have been mastering vegan recipes lately.

BEATING CANCER with CBD 3x a day

Megan Marchetti

If

you have had any involvement in the Oregon Cannabis industry, chances are you’ve encountered the lioness that is Megan Marchetti.

While her successful involvement in the industry pre-dates legalization, I bring you her harrowing story of healing through Cannabis.

Marchetti was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer and told she had cancer in one of her breasts. After a series of genetic tests, she learned that she was predisposed to breast cancer in both breasts.

She opted for a double bilateral mastectomy. Since the operation, Marchetti heavily relies on topicals and CBD to manage post-operation healing.

“I was dealing with stage one breast cancer in one breast.

And after I tested positive genetically for both, I opted for surgery. I found the medical system incredibly alienating, so I opted for the bilateral mastectomy. I couldn’t deal with having to constantly go back and deal with appointments. I previously had a spinal surgery about five years ago, and I got really hooked on the opioids. It was fucking brutal when I finally came off of them. I already knew before I had my mastectomy I wasn’t going

back to opioids. No fucking way. I knew Cannabis was my only real option. Unlike my spinal surgery, I had to own this one and that was scary at times.”

Marchetti takes 60mg of Cannabis derived CBD three times a day. She also applies full extract cannabis oil topically over the incisions. Marchetti also believes in short and long walks to try to get as many natural endorphins pumping as possible before she reaches for Cannabis. She believes a multipronged approach to healing is idea and usually different for everyone.

“I rely heavily on CBD and THCA for relief. I get up every morning and walk and walk my dog until I get those natural CBDs pumping so I can function. I had to go back to twenty-one days after my surgery. It wasn’t ideal, but I think we are lucky enough to grow cannabis – which helps keeps the cost of medicating down.”

THE SHEER AMOUNT OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL PAIN MARCHETTI HAS ENDURED IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS STILL HASN’T ROBBED HER OF HER BOLD PERSONALITY OR SENSE OF HUMOR. SHE FEELS MORE EMPOWERED THAN EVER.

“Y

ou can truly grow your own medicine and there is a community that will teach you how to do it and help you find the right strains to treat yourself with. I’ve seen people work really hard to try and heal people,” she says.

“And they aren’t making money like they do in the pharmaceutical industries.”

Marchetti is a big advocate of growing your own medicine. It gives you total control of what you are putting in your body. You know where it comes from and you know it’s the strain that works for you. That kind of accessibility is available for women dealing with breast cancer in Oregon.

“CBD for women helps with depression and the ups and downs. Cannabis is a female plant it and it does a lot of healing for women! We can cultivate it, nurture it and it’s seasonal. Women in our culture can really relate to that. There is so much nuance in healing and Cannabis gives you a natural way out of the big pharma complex,” she says.

After listening to her story, I asked Marchetti what she would tell someone in the same position.

“It’s gonna be the scariest thing you will ever do, and it will be scary to look in the mirror. But taking the CBD will keep your eyes clear and you mind clear. Taking pharmaceuticals warps all of that.”

“With Cannabis, you can be present in the experience, rather than being numb to it. You’re going to walk with it – you’re not going to walk behind the experience – you’re going walk in the experience and I think that’s a big part of healing because first you have to physically heal, but then you have to emotionally heal and it should be happening at the same time. It should be a symbiotic process.

It shouldn’t be: I’m going to heal my body, then I’m going to detox and then I will finally deal with emotional shit. No. You have to do it all at once.”

The sheer amount of physical and emotional pain Marchetti has endured in the last six months still hasn’t robbed her of her bold personality or sense of humor. She feels more empowered than ever.

“I felt like I had more control because I went to my doctors and told them what I wanted for myself - it wasn’t them telling me what to do. I actually helped educate my doctors on Cannabis. Although my Oncologist recognized my Oregon’s Finest sweater and told me he was a fan of the shop.”

Healing is a multi-faceted mess at times. There isn’t an easy way to go about it, but Cannabis helps smooth the edges. Breast cancer isn’t all about physical loss, and mental health is crucial for healing. Cannabis provides both avenues of our human duality with relief and minimal interference.

“Before the surgery, I was going to all these appointments, and taking all these tests and Cannabis was the one thing that made me feel like I had some control over the situation,” Marchetti said.

“I feel like I found my tribe with Cannabis. I think that people who want to heal their bodies and their minds go the cannabis route. I helps you cope with life without interfering negatively.”

regon Girl Gardens is an Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) licensed recreational Cannabis farm located just outside Oregon City. Owners Robin and Audra have created a sustainable, self-built, mixed tier 2 Cannabis farm that was constructed on land owned by Robin’s parents. All the construction was done by Robin, Audra and their friends and family.

Power and irrigation lines were constructed by hand with much of the work being done during the rainy months. When we arrived, dogs and horses greeted us at the front gate of what at first seemed like a regular livestock farm. A windy gravel path lead us to the back of the property where the garden was set. Oregon Girl Gardens utilizes a light deprivation greenhouse that has multiple stages of flowering plants inside.

Fermented Plant Juices, and parts of the Nectar for the Gods line are fed by hand to each flowering plant.

The team prefers to keep the plants on the smaller side, as they are able to give them more attention and love that adds to the quality of the end product. Construction of a second greenhouse was planned for the gravel area next to the first one. Oregon Girl Gardens’ utilization of filtered, natural air flow gives them a sustainable edge over many farms we have visited, as they need about half the cooling units to keep their environments optimal.

The farm also has a sun grown plot and two indoor flower rooms for further craft Cannabis cultivation. Plants in the field are fed by a drip system and have insectary companion plants plotted all around to encourage beneficial insect activity. fter watching Sara Batterby speak on multiple Cannabis forums, I was eager to pick her brain. Batterby built her name in the tech industry, but brings the corporate structure most Cannabis businesses so desperately lack.

“Hifi farms started in January 2015, and my goal was to build one of the most progressive Cannabis companies in the country, really. I founded Portland’s chapter of Women Grow to set the tone in terms of community engagement by supporting and connecting people in industry. There is a huge need for craft Cannabis in the medical market—and they need basic business skills like fundraising. So, I started the Leader Camp Peer Advisory group for mentor and advisory capacities,” Batterby said.

Batterby stands out because she understands the power of collective success. Instead of hoarding her business skills for the benefit of her own end, she looks to help other start-ups with common obstacles.

“Hifi is the first Cannabis company to register Cannabis stock options plan for employees.

We have 58 percent female representation and a strong representation of people of color and vets in our work force.”

I asked her what we could expect from a day in the life of being CEO of Hifi Farms.

“We use lean business principles so our days are organized into huddles. As CEO, I drop into different huddles: sometimes I’m in the cultivation huddle. I take a lot of meetings, lot of time on the phone, I work every day with my CFO. I constantly surf across the surface of the company and figure out how to solve problems and remove obstacles,” she said.

“I need to be a year or two ahead in the next six months’ time. Sometimes my day ends with my fiancé and I pulling for light dep at 7 p.m.

My day-to-day life can vary.”

Running a Cannabis business can be exhaustive and thankless work, but Batterby said she recognizes the opportunity this industry offers business women. She knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but was lucky enough to get on the ground floor of the Cannabis movement.

“There is no glass ceiling because it hasn’t been built. There are many women employed in the industry, but there is a real leadership opportunity as well. It’s extremely important that women who reach success empower the women who come in underneath them. It is just the beginning!”

If

you are looking to break into the Cannabis industry — or to brand and design your own Cannabis business — you have to talk to Lisa Snyder. Snyder’s background is rooted in a healthy dose of feminism, event organization and art design.

“We do workshops, we learn how to give women tools, resources and access points for women to succeed. Women have the opportunity right now to be equal, or even take it over.

By showing up, we can show other women how to create their own access points,” Snyder said.

Tokeativity’s first workshop was dubbed “Get that fucking job” which helped women write Cannabis-specific resumes to land potential Cannabis gigs. Actionable items such as a resume are important to Snyder because action can translate into a form of progress and eventually success.

“I have been working on the web since the mid-‘90s and organizing feminist events for over a decade. I work to help women find light inside themselves to do awesome things in the world. Both my parents died before Cannabis gained any real legitimacy. My dad was a video engineer for CBS and ended up winning an Emmy. I saw so much behind the scenes, both men and women doing awesome stuff—including women who produce,” Snyder said.

Women like Snyder are helping to connect industry newcomers to reliable connections and a source of community. The Cannabis event might be about an aspect events for of Cannabis, but the real heart of women Tokeativity is building a strong relationship network of women.

“I went to art school, so I know how to implement ideas. I can visualize it to the end.

I was inspired to create Tokeativity by hanging out with friends, smoking pot and eating food!

I finally found a space to host at Prism, and Tokeativity was born into the world and has grown significantly over the last seven months to nurture a safe space to create things, business or whatever.”

mpower remains the dominant topical force in Oregon since the medical-only days. Owner and founder Trista Okel leads one of the few companies that has managed to translate that success into the new, recreational market.

“It’s all about education to build a successful mainstream topical brand, it’s important to educate as many people we can on a daily basis. It’s not like selling flower, because most people understand what flower is going to do. I think topicals have a lot more health and wellness focus because Topical company they don’t get you high — but you do get relief. The market for topicals is huge and largely untapped,” Okel said.

Topicals are the unsung hero of Cannabis products with the potential to go mainstream. From a market standpoint, users who frequent dispensaries are largely interested in getting physically high, but they are missing out on other ways to go about using Cannabis—such as topicals.

“Whether I am talking to people who have never tried Cannabis topicals, or taking a class on cannabinoids—I am always educating or learning. My team has grown but I still work closely with the staff on all levels.”

By being able to share Empower products with our staff, Okel said productivity has increased within the company because no one calls out [sick] for things like cramps anymore! Okel said she understands that a healthier team is key to a successful team.

“In 2013, it was myself and a part-time person. Now, Empower has grown to eleven employees. Paid time off is offered. People must be able to relax, recharge and stay healthy in order to be on this mission — give as much of a living wage as possible. Turnover costs way too much and it pisses me off so we don’t want it. Empower is looking to be employee-owned, which also helps with retention. For now, we are lesbian-owned!”

t’s important to represent your brands as if they were your own,” said Johanna Williamson, Highly Distributed’s chief of operations.

“It’s a combination of having the staff to execute and the day-to-day metrics and trained reps that know what they are talking about and invest themselves in the brands they represent. It has more to do with people who know how to talk to other people and quick thinkers. You have to read into what people are thinking.”

Williamson says Cannabis wholesale is all about connecting people with the right products. It’s a lot about understanding your products and the price points for clients. Most of the work is touch and go because the industry foundations are still under construction.

“We currently work with seven to ten companies. I think everyone who has made it through that period is doing good things. Not everyone made it, and we all made adjustments. One of my biggest focuses is working to incorporate philanthropy into companies. If we can find an area where a company had good margins, they could donate some of the profit.”

If brands look at the option of distribution and if they don’t Wholesale see value or benefit of working with a distribution company, distributor you must figure out what they need, she says.

Williamson says distribution companies remove the headache of monitoring sales reps in the field.

“The hardest part is that the industry is so up and down, we now have a new wave of extract producers and there is all this product out there but no one is really managing the flow of it all. I think the challenge is helping companies find the right material to provide and finding the right relationships. Oregon is in a position to create its own sustainable, self-feeding system and we will be so much more independent than we would without it.

amantha Montanaro is the owner and creator of Prism House and specializes in event coordination and artful design.

“Prism House is my freelance design and event organizing business at this big house my husband and I bought to create this space. It’s all beveled windows and prisms everywhere. As a patient and Cannabis smoker, I was really excited to be focusing on Cannabis.”

Montanaro hosts all sorts of events, including the monthly Oregon Cannabis Industry Meetup, which is just $10 at the door.

Pot party Montanaro also hosts swanky dinner events, which can cost planning up to $100 per person. Prism House looks to host events for all needs and purposes.

“I learned how to throw big events, and create safe spaces — not only physically safe, but a space of inclusiveness — it is really important to me that every event has an intention.”

As a creative and a mother, Montanaro says she has always surrounded herself with diverse groups of women. When Montanaro and her husband bought the house, they wanted to use the space to build the budding Cannabis community—and do it with style.

“Once everything is going, I tiptoe around trying to be secretive and watch peoples’ faces and expressions and observe the magic happening.

It can seem like chaos, but it always comes together perfectly.”

“It’s the legal landscape in Oregon. It’s a big challenge because not only are you a pioneer, but you must take risks for the client—and I am willing to do that. Without Canna events, it’s easy to feel extremely isolated. They bring people together and it doesn’t exclude you or make you lonely. We should be able to experience this together and make it a part of our culture. And make it a part of our everyday lives.”

aura Brannan is the force behind Portland’s beloved Elbe’s Edibles.

She is serious about food and at the heart of her recipes is her amazing cannabutter, which has taken years and years to totally perfect.

After watching that incredible tenacity and growth, I was delighted to sit down with Brannan to discuss what keeps her inspired in the kitchen.

“What makes us stand out is we have taken over seven years to perfect our cannabutter recipes. Seven years of research and development, and by doing so, our edibles have no flavor of Cannabis in our foods. It’s food first, and everything has to taste amazing and medicate strongly before it leaves the kitchen. Recipe refinement is essential,” Brannan said.

Brannan only sources plant material from the highest quality of craft Cannabis cultivators, like award winning Geek Farms. The Cannabis comes first, then the butter. What makes Brannan’s philosophy so special is that the integrity of all ingredients is on the same level. It’s a true “food first” mentality because the quality and the delivery of the high means everything.

“I get to get up each day and play in my 3,000-square-foot custom built Cannabis kitchen. Two to six hours are spent working with my Edibles hand-picked team of amazing talented individuals who all own producer their own skills and on various projects. My favorite part of the day is when we eat our staff lunch together. No matter how busy we are, we still sit down with our crew and share a family meal.” But it’s not all gravy.

“One challenge for Cannabis in Oregon is the rules against public consumption. It affects tourism dollars, it affects how our industry is perceived and it affects the bottom line of our profits,” Brannan says. “The only positive I can derive of that is the Oregon laws demand discretion, and my products offer that. While this can be a win for my company, it’s certainly not a win for Cannabis. Public consumption is a fight I will continue fight for.”

The whole team has some kind of background in sustainable practice.

CEO Stephanie Woodruff believes the core of Mindful is integrity, science and wellness.

They run a tight crew of eight employees total.

Her business partner has a background in biochemistry, and wellness creating products.

Woodruff ’s team is striving to close the loop and bring sustainability to the indoor world.

Her “team of nerds” does their own breeding, working to hunt phenos, seeds and special cuts.

“I do a little bit of everything: I manage people, I manage operations, I do all the sales and marketing outreach and the sustainability program. We currently boast zero waste and we recycle everything. My current project and goal is to get rid of plastics. All of our packaging is compostable and recyclable,” she said.

“We are looking for closed looped systems to apply to indoor gardening. We are composting, using grey water catch net systems and grey water gardens for native gardens all around the property. We also do companion planting and generally spearhead sustainability as an indoor garden.”

Woodruff says when you’re growing outside you’re working with a living environment that endows your land. Inside, you are building systems. Woodruff calls it “bio mimickery” to guide indoor growing techniques.

It’s exciting because there hasn’t been anyone doing anything like this before.

We can help create and mold the industry with the highest sustainability practices and little environmental impact. It’s important for consumers and business owners to be a model for the rest of the country.”

Autumn took the time to tell why Gnome Grown is so special.

“I’ve been working in the Cannabis industry for almost a decade, and I’ve seen the evolution of where it started, and what was important then—versus what’s important now. Working for Gnome Grown embodies the ethics in Cannabis right now. I originally started working on the farm after observing all of their ethical and sustainable practices. I was stoked.

They are trying to create a stanCannabis dard for the quality of Cannabis producer but also encourage people to be mindful of our carbon footprint.”

Gnome Grown stands out as a female-lead brand because of the dedication to clean growing practices on the farm and to sustainable packaging on the retail floor. The holistic approach makes them one of the front-runners for Oregon Cannabis industry standards.

“Everything Gnome Grown does in terms of health and ecology is amazing; we practice no-till farming and not being wasteful. We use our land and resources from the farm and close the loop. They have a good mind to set the bar moving forward and we believe in fair market pricing, so everybody has access to quality medicine,” Buck said.

“For me, I am constantly switching gears.

It’s fast paced and at any given time a hundred different things are up in the air. It requires you to be fast moving, quick thinking and be a problem solver. The people who work on the farm and the retail setting — we all have one goal in mind. It’s a level of camaraderie I have not experienced working anywhere else.”

Buck describes the last six months as tough, especially watching friends and peers going through the difficulties of change in the industry. She and many others believe it’s a conflict of interest with Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) managing alcohol and Cannabis. The laws make it really tough for Cannabis businesses to succeed, Buck said.

Adapt or perish. I asked if there were any personnel issues between managing the farm and the newly formed retail crew.

“My biggest problem with employees is just not having enough of them! Everyone who has joined our team realized we are all fortunate to be a part of something really special.”

didn’t know what to expect from a mother and daughter-inlaw business endeavor. Usually most people can’t stand their in-laws—let alone go into business with them. Drama aside, this mother-daughter duo has managed to build a successful edible company from the ground up.

The mother, Laurie, has published four Cannabis cookbooks, and was the food editor at Mademoiselle Magazine. She graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York and wrote about food and recipes for a long time. Laurie brings the culinary skills and know-how to the table, while Mary, her daughter-in-law, specializes in creative design and operations.

“We want to keep elevating the edible, taking it further than a brownie recipe. We want sophisticated Cannabis recipes. We think there are foods that benefit from the taste of Cannabis, and the terpenes have a lot to do with it — we are always deciding whether or not terpenes complement or contrast. We don’t like to completely eliminate the taste of Cannabis because it may boost a Edibles particular dish,” Laurie said. producer Laurie had a particular interest in crafting tasty edibles since she is a current Oregon Medical Marijuana Program patient who relies on Cannabis to treat a seizure disorder.

Laurie has been aura and seizure-free since using Cannabis.

Three weeks after using Cannabis, the auras and seizures haven’t returned. Laurie uses her culinary and OMMP insight to guide her recipes and figure out what people need from Cannabis.

Mary runs design and sourcing, and Laurie credits her with birthing the brand. Mary does a stellar job with design, all while running the business and regulatory side. Metrics and ever-evolving regulation are constant. Mary has a seat on the metric training advisory committee and is constantly working on streamlining the edible business.

“Sharing a kitchen with two other edibles companies, it was a constant struggle because it never felt like we had a home. Our new kitchen is the old World Famous Café production kitchen. We are really excited. We are in control and we run it,” Laurie said.

Finding Cannabis-approved kitchens has been a major source of struggle for edible companies. They already feel at ease knowing they have more control over their own space and can move on to different challenges.

“At the beginning of the day we have our list of orders, and our kitchen crew organizes and packages everything up. We do metric the night before so we aren’t scrambling the day of. Then our sales go out and then our kitchen crew works on the next batch of products. Whether it’s scooping the brownies, or making cheese crackers, we are in the back office dealing with the day-to-day regulation and the process,” Mary said. “We have sales, our own kitchen and the future looks very bright.”

Reefer Distribution hopes to raise the quality standards expected of distribution companies from the ground up.

“I’ve been in wholesale and distribution for three years and moved to Eugene in late 2015.

I’ve been at Reefer Distribution for about a year now. It has been amazing working for a vertically integrated company,” Bauer said.

Bauer primarily works with Cannabis TJ’s Organic Gardens and Green product Tea Farms in Southern Oregon. distributor Reefer Distribution uses the material from those cultivators to make edibles, concentrates and tinctures. Bauer is building an ecosystem of brands all based off starting with a base of organic, no-till cultivated Cannabis.

“As director of distribution, I work with a lot of backend customers (suppliers) and getting a handle on what they are bringing to market in the future, but it’s also really important to keep myself in the field to keep up with norms and changes from retailers to suppliers. I use my background in education to communicate the practices of growers and products. Creating educational materials, budtender training materials for the final customer.”

Bauer says you have to adapt the message to each audience, and education is a vital part of the success of a growing distribution company.

“We have such strong partnerships established; we can openly communicate and trust we can work through it together.”

Bauer is also dedicated to their non-profit, The Forest Initiative. TJ’s Gardens started The Forest Initiative by donating a high CBD tincture to more than one hundred families dealing with different seizure ailments and other medical conditions. Philanthropy has already found its way into the distribution world!

Years ago, when I would ask my father what was new, he always answered “Same two slices, kid!” Strange, right?

Well, these breads make the most of the sandwich, and there is nothing hum drum about these bready beauties.

Feel free to change things around a bit, add turkey to the B.L.A.T. and substitute roast beef for the turkey in the Havarti sandwich. And grab yourself some gluten free bread if you are feeling left out!

TURKEY HAVARTI On this sandwich, the turkey and Havarti seem to be the perfect complement for the onion flavor. Not overpowering, it’s just right.

1. Toast the Ciabatta rolls.

2. In a small saucepan melt the

canna-butter or oil. Sauté the onion until soft and caramelized.

3. Spread with the onion on the bottom of two rolls and layer with roasted peppers, Havarti and turkey.

4. Slice in half before serving.

B.L.A.T. Better than a B.L.T., this sandwich deserves the best ingredients you can afford.

Really good bacon, ripe avocado, homemade mayo and a perfect tomato and you have a truly remarkable sandwich.

1. Slice avocado and toss with lemon juice.

2. Toast bread.

3. Spread two slices of bread with the canna-mayonnaise.

4. Layer on bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato to make two delicious sandwiches.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 avocado, peeled/sliced 2 teaspoons lemon juice 4 slices potato bread, toasted 2-4 teaspoons cannamayonnaise (recipe to right) 8 slices bacon, cooked as you like it, drained 4 leaves soft lettuce, rinsed and patted dry 2-4 slices ripe tomato

CANNA MAYO

1. Combine egg and mustard in the bowl of a food processor fitted INGREDIENTS with a blade attachment. Process until mixture is evenly combined.

2. With the processor running, slowly add oils in a thin stream until combined. Add vinegar or lemon juice and pulse until smooth.

Season to taste with salt and pepper.

INGREDIENTS

Banh Mi is a Vietnamese street snack that is made with a baguette and filled with a variety of ingredients. This sandwich is light, yet satisfying. Get the best bread you can find. This type of sandwich wants a light airy French baguette with a thin crust. So, so good.

1 large egg 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 cup canola oil 1 1/3 tablespoons canna-oil 4 teaspoons white wine vinegar

2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 teaspoons fish sauce 2 teaspoons canna-oil 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon sugar 2 six-inch pieces baguette, sliced in half horizontally 2 chicken breasts from rotisserie chicken, cooked, thinly sliced 1/4 cup shredded cabbage 1/4 cup shredded carrots Sprigs of cilantro

In a small bowl combine the water, lime juice, fish sauce, cannaoil, garlic, soy sauce and sugar.

2. Place the bread on your work surface. Drizzle the cut sides with the dressing. Lay the sliced chicken breast on the sandwich and top with the shredded vegetables and any remaining sauce.
