OREGON LEAF

the truth about the plant you thought you knew, IN every issue.

editor’s note

FEB. 2016 ISSUE #20

With our nation and corner of the country changing every day, remember what matters... although we are still in the middle of winter, the days are slowly getting longer and

glimpses of the sun remind us of what is ahead: spring, and a new year full of possibilities. The Cannabis industry is like a freshly planted clone, seeking to place roots and grow toward the most intense form of energy in the spectrum. But with such eager growth comes potential for problems, as both Washington and Oregon patients are seeing. Laws are being passed that limit or strip away personal freedoms, while recreational systems are being pushed primarily by hunger for revenue from business owners and state governments. We as a Cannabis community need to look back upon our roots and understand the real motivation for legalizing medical and recreational Cannabis. The potential for the country rests on how and why future states legalize, and it must not be for the wrong reasons. Revenue is great and badly needed to fund schools and build infrastructure, but we must put patients and freedom first. As I constantly remind the many green rush potpreneurs I encounter, what some are building business plans and investment models around, others are being arrested for. Human beings are locked in for-profit cages over a plant that some seek to control only for profit, while others aren’t able to cure or treat their medical ailments with a harmless plant, even in a state like Washington where pot is legal but a single recreational plant is a felony. This situation is untenable. Our community created one of the most vibrant and beneficial industries in the world, but we risk losing all that made it special. We must advocate for responsible legalization, responsible regulations, and responsible business practices that protect small scale and heritage farmers and the most vulnerable medical Cannabis patient users. Let states have their tax cakes, let businesses make profits, but let’s put medicine and freedom first.

Japan’s First Lady Akie Abe raised eyebrows after telling a Japanese magazine that she’s considered becoming a hemp farmer to help revive the traditional culture. In an interview with Spa!, Abe said she became interested in hemp cultivation and considered applying for a permit to grow the plant after studying its history, reports The Wall Street Journal. “Hemp is a plant of which all of its parts can be used effectively,” Abe said. “While it is not yet permitted in Japan, I think it can be put into great practical use for medical purposes as well.” Japan maintains a hard line with its marijuana laws. The Cannabis Control Law enacted in 1948 bans the cultivation, purchase, import and export of marijuana. But before that, hemp was widely grown in Japan and used to make fabric and for use in imperial ceremonies. Legal hemp farms still exist in Japan, but they are rare and require special permits. Abe said she’d like to revive the Japanese tradition of cultivating hemp. “I’ve even considered myself to apply for a permit to grow hemp,” she said. The article included a photo of the First Lady visiting a hemp farm in Western Japan in August and posing for a photo in the middle of the hemp field.

150,642 Oregon Marijuana Shoppers Adjust To 25% Sales Tax With the three-month tax holiday over, Cannabis sales aren’t dwindling.

Recreational marijuana shoppers in Oregon

are taking a new 25 percent sales tax in stride, according to many dispensary owners and industry observers. After a three-month tax holiday, the state imposed the tax on recreational Cannabis sales on Jan. 1. The tax will eventually be replaced with a 17 percent sales tax once the Oregon Liquor Control Commission takes control of the new recreational marijuana industry as planned later this year. While some customers have shrugged off the tax, “we have people that say they would rather go back to their ‘guy,’ so to speak, and walk out,” said Matt Price, who owns the Cannabliss chain of dispensaries.

Nathan Krytenberg, general manager at Glisan Buds and Foster Buds, took the unusual step of absorbing the tax. He says his “strategic decision” should generate enough additional sales to cover the 25 percent hit. Krytenberg said he hopes his move generates customer loyalty. More than 100 shops compete with each other and a wellestablished black market for Cannabis customers in Portland. “To be quite honest with you, if we even take a small hit, I believe the fact that we are doing this will put us in a better market position,” said Krytenberg. His Glisan Buds and Foster Buds shops sell marijuana for $9 and $15 a gram.

Congressman Blumenauer Writes Open Letter To President About Marijuana Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) on Tuesday wrote an open letter advocating marijuana legalization to President Obama in advance of the president’s State of the Union speech. “As you begin your last year in office, I hope there is one more step you take to bring about fundamental change — ending the failed policy of marijuana prohibition and removing marijuana from the list of Controlled Substances,” Rep. Customs Seize Fake Carrots Stuffed With A Ton Of Marijuana

Maine School Board Allows Medical Marijuana On School Property

World Famous Cannabis Cafe Still Open Despite Clean Air Provisions

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents on Jan. 10 discovered more than a ton of marijuana disguised as carrots on the border between Mexico and the U.S. near McAllen, Texas. Agents first performed a search of the vehicle carrying what appeared to be a commercial shipment of carrots by using non-intrusive imaging technology, reports Business Insider, then took a second pass with drug-detecting dogs. Bundles of marijuana were wrapped in orange tape, disguised as large carrots, in the shipment that was crossing the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. The shipment contained 2,817 carrot-shaped packages of marijuana, which agents claimed were worth $499,000 on the street, reports FoxNews.com. “Once again, drug smuggling organizations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the U.S.-Mexico border,” said port director Efrain Solis Jr. of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “Our officers are always ready to meet those challenges and remain vigilant towards any type of illicit activities,” Solis said. Homeland Security agents will follow up on the carrot investigation, authorities said.

The school board in Auburn, Maine, in January voted to allow students to be administered medical marijuana while on school property. Maine voters legalized medicinal Cannabis in 1999, reports Crystal Haynes at Fox 25. Effective immediately, students in Pre-K through high school who are authorized to use medical marijuana can be administered Cannabis on school property by a parent or caregiver. The policy prohibits smoking — most children who are authorized to use Cannabis use edible extracts or tinctures. Auburn superintendent Katy Grondin said school districts must make sure medical marijuana doesn’t interfere with education. “It’s what the doctor and the family decides is in the best interest of the child,” she said. “We’re not getting involved in it medically.” It’s about Morgan Fox of the Marijuana Policy what the Project (MPP) said laws that allow doctor and access to medical marijuana while in the family school are about providing kids with decides is the medicine they need to be able to in the best attend at all. “These kids, just because interest of they’re sick, shouldn’t have their education interrupted,” Fox said. the child”

Oregon’s newly expanded Indoor Clean Air Act kicked in on New Year’s Day, but the World Famous Cannabis Cafe in Portland remains open, hosting popular Stoner Bingo games and Thursday night jam sessions. Multnomah County has already received a complaint about Cannabis smoking in the business and officials plan to send owner Madeline Martinez a letter reminding her of the law, reports The Oregonian. A county code enforcement officer will visit the cafe after a 10-day grace period to make sure Martinez has complied, said Multnomah County spokeswoman Julie Sullivan-Springhetti. The officer would outline the steps the cafe needs to take and make an additional unannounced visit, she said. Penalties could include daily fines of up to $500 for continued noncompliance, Sullivan-Springhetti said. A county public health official dropped by the club last month after hearing complaints about smoking in the establishment. That official, Erik Vidstrand, told Martinez that smoking and vaping Cannabis would be illegal in her club after Jan. 1. Lawmakers this year expanded Oregon’s 2009 Indoor Clean Air Act to prohibit using vapor pens and e-cigarettes in public areas. Marijuana was added to the law, which had targeted only tobacco.

other how much they care. A day when even grade school children share cards and candy hearts. Many of us take for granted our freedom to enjoy all of the personal experiences and moments with those we love during the holidays. Being ripped away from loved ones is one of the worst punishments of our nation’s unjust Drug War. Sitting alone in a cold cell, on a stiff cot, a pot prisoner lays awake miserably thinking about past moments with loved ones because the present is too cruel. They are punished for utilizing a healing plant with more positive than negative impact on one’s life — often punished for helping sick people help themselves. One such Drug War victim is Chris Lee Martin, the creator of Zonka Bars. A chef, father and loving husband sentenced to two years behind bars because he helped people who chose to consume his safe product voluntarily. Martin has not seen his loving wife or children since his incarceration. Because his wife is a codefendant and not permitted to visit him, his punishment has already been cruel and unusual. Martin’s wife continues to run the family business, Hempful Farms Cafe in Arizona, while awaiting her fate and her husband’s release. Tacoma – After seven days of trial, Lance Gloor was found guilty of distribution of marijuana and manufacturing 73 marijuana plants. Gloor’s bravery to take his case to trial has made history. For the first time, Gloor was able to present medical laws in his federal case. It took five days for the case to be presented and two for deliberation. Jurors could not reach a verdict on his money laundering charge and he was acquitted on possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

During the trial, federal prosecutor Vince Lombardi painted quite an ugly picture of Gloor. Witnesses for the prosecution included: David Thesenvitz, former manager of KPN Cross; Josh Hoelzer, childhood friend and former manager of Lacey Cross; Casey Lee, childhood friend and owner/manager of Lacey Cross; Kara Drew, ex-girlfriend of seven years and manager of KPN Cross; Irene Velez, Gloor’s ex-girlfriend; Shannon O’Leary, owner/manager of KPN Cross; and John Nason, manager of Tacoma Cross. Even Gloor’s co-defendants testified against

him, including: James Lucas, Gloor’s childhood friend, business partner and owner of Tacoma Cross, Seattle Cross, Lacey Cross and KPN Cross; and Matthew Roberts, owner of Tacoma Cross and Seattle Cross. All were willing to provide testimony against Gloor in exchange for a lesser jail sentence for themselves. During deliberations, a juror, who was also an MMJ patient, suffered a panic attack. Medicating in federal court is illegal. The juror was rushed to the hospital and replaced by an alternate. A few hours later, Gloor was convicted on two of the four charges. Every day of the trial, the courtroom was full of supporters including family, friends and other activists. Federal defendants Debbie Brechler, Josh Mauk and Rhonda Firestack-Harvey also stood by Gloor’s side in the courtroom in hopes that Gloor would be found not guilty. Voices of the Cannabis War and The Human Solution International said they would like to applaud and congratulate Gloor on his bravery and desire to help end the War on Drugs. Without the help of the whole community, Gloor would have probably been found guilty of all four charges. Gloor is a hero to us all, and we commend his strength and desire to end prohibition. Gloor still needs our help, as he is scheduled for sentencing on April 15 and will need court support as well as letters to help convince Judge Leighton to grant him the most lenient sentence possible. For more details about Gloor’s case, read all of Miggy’s thorough coverage of the trial which can be found at TokeSignals.com. Please remember that we can end prohibition by standing together and utilizing our right of jury nullification. If you are ever called upon for jury duty and you believe the law is unjust, regardless of a judge’s jury instructions, you can use your power to vote not guilty. It only takes one juror to keep someone from going to prison for a plant. It’s up to all of us to do the right thing.

Bellingham – Known as the Bellingham 3, Martin Nickerson, Chris Ramsey and Poppy Sidhu’s lives have been in the hands of the government for more than four years for their alleged participation in Northern Cross Collective. The good news came on Jan. 13: court went very well for the three, as the prosecutor and judge agreed to work on a resolution and might drop the charges that could put them in prison for more than 30 years.

BEING RIPPED AWAY FROM LOVED ONES IS ONE OF THE WORST PUNISHMENTS OF OUR NATION’S UNJUST DRUG WAR.

Seattle - Josh Mauk and Debbie Brechler were due to be sentenced on Jan. 29 for endangering human life while manufacturing a controlled substance. After a long struggle and many hardships, both are as thankful for the many letters of support as we are thankful for their sacrifices. The couple has been longtime advocates for our MMJ laws and plant prisoners. At the time we wrote this article, the outcome of their sentencing was not yet known. We will have a full update in the next issue.

Eastern WA – The remaining members of the Kettle Falls Five are awaiting their appeal. They were sentenced in October for manufacturing more than 50 plants and fewer than 100 plants of Cannabis, which falls under the legal guidelines of Washington’s medical marijuana program. Rolland Gregg received a sentence of 33 months in prison and three years’ probation. Rolland’s mother, Rhonda Firestack-Harvey, and his wife, Michelle Gregg, both received one year in prison and three years’ probation. All three remain free pending their appeals. Visit their Facebook page or their website KettleFallsFive.com to learn more about the case.

Sheridan - Chad Latham has served nearly a decade for Cannabis offenses at the federal prison camp in Sheridan, Ore. Now the Tacoma, Wash. native will be allowed to move into a halfway house. On Dec. 18, Latham and his family learned that he was honored to be one of the 95 drug offenders granted commutation by President Obama. In a letter to President Obama, Latham wrote, “You have given me, without a doubt, the greatest gift a person can give another. My family and I will be reunited this coming Tuesday, which is about two years sooner than expected. I am really looking forward to the ride home, where I’ll be able to lay my head on my son’s shoulder and hold my sister’s hand. … Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I will be responsible and vigilantly adherent to the law of the land with my future endeavors.”

NATIONAL NEWS Nevada - MMJ patient Terisa Deming is facing the fight of her life. In February of 2014, she was charged with felony counts of possession with the intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance and possession of firearms. She will face Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez at 9 a.m. on Feb. 8 for a trial readiness hearing, and again at 9 a.m. on March 9 for calendar call. Trial is set to begin at 1 p.m. on March 14. Deming respectfully requests those concerned about the rights of Cannabis patients to attend. The trial is at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas, 200 Lewis Ave., room 14C. Be sure to verify time and date in advance.

President Obama recently granted clemency to 95 federal inmates, including three prisoners serving time for Cannabis crimes.

Kansas - The case of State of Kansas versus Shona Banda took a turn on the morning of Jan. 12 when Banda and her attorney, Sarah Swain, appeared for arraignment. Charles Cundiff was serving life and had Banda, a victim of a police been in prison since raid last year that could bring 1991 for two counts years in prison, is on the verge of conspiracy to of making history. The state of Kansas has never allowed or recognized a medical necessity defense. But, as we all know, there’s a first time for everything. I believe that this case will move forward with Ms. Banda allowed to inform the jury that her use of medical Cannabis was allowed under the law. We will be on the right side of history. Now, the thrust is understanding that alcohol has no real medicinal use. Maybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked.” Freeman said he relies on marijuana for medical reasons. “Marijuana has many useful uses, I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana,” he said. “They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. Right there to me, that says, ‘legalize it across the board!’” As other states have moved to decriminalize and outright legalize Cannabis, Freeman has become more and more outspoken about his use of the herb. “If you smoke enough marijuana, you’ll get everything going,” he told a British reporter asking about his boundless energy. Legalization on a technicality. WHAT IT MEANS WHEN YOU CAN’T SHARE A JOINT.

Recreational marijuana use has been legal in Wash-

ington state since 2012, but just how legal is it? To all appearances, legalization, as implemented in the state, has benefited mostly the wealthy, from those who’ve been able to afford the expensive licensing process for the recreational pot shops to the wellto-do weed consumers who don’t have to worry about being busted anymore. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of ways for everyday pot smokers to run afoul of the law. For the masses, legalization in Washington feels like “more of a theoretical freedom,” with Cannabis governed under the same laws that prohibit public consumption of alcohol, reports Slate. “If you’re smoking in plain public view, you’re subject to a ticket,” Seattle city attorney Pete Holmes said in 2012, just as legalization measure I-502 was going into effect. In Washington state — as in the rest of the U.S., even legalized places — publicly sharing a marijuana high with friends can land you a court summons, and possibly a night in jail. The most common punishment in Seattle itself is a $27 fine, but police are still given broad discretionary powers of enforcement — and this discretion almost always reflects racial and class-based prejudice, according to Slate. In 2014, Seattleites were outraged when police reported that almost half of the city’s marijuana violations were issued to homeless people and more than a third went to black residents. The Seattle Police Department later traced most of these summons to a single pot-hating cop,

whom they claimed had issued close to 80 percent of those violations. Seattle and Washington have continued passing new laws tightly governing marijuana possession and use, as if after years, pot has suddenly become a problem under legalization. Over the summer, the Washington Legislature passed a law making it a felony to run a “Cannabis club” or to allow patrons to get high at a business. Lawmakers, with an absurd “open container” law, also made carrying Cannabis in any part of a vehicle accessible to drivers or passengers illegal. Smoking was banned in all public housing in Seattle in 2012, and many landlords include clauses prohibiting smoking on their premises, making it illegal to smoke even in many private residences around the state. Meanwhile, regular mom-and-pop medical marijuana operations are getting boxed out from participating in a cottage industry they’ve created for years, often with a high level of charitable

contributions to patients, in favor of a system controlled by wealth and based only on bottom lines. Each state that has so far legalized recreational marijuana — namely Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska — maintains a ban on public consumption, still leaving a way for cops to make low-level marijuana busts. You know, the kind we were promised cops wouldn’t be forced to waste their time with anymore after legalization. “Laws against public consumption of intoxicants like marijuana and alcohol have done little to prevent anyone from consuming them in public,” writes Slate’s Michael Thomsen. “Instead, they’ve helped to create a toxic anxiety about always being watched, leaving some small part of your brain on alert for cops, cameras or tattle-minded neighbors, all of which quietly sour our shared spaces instead of securing them.” “Marijuana’s long prohibition seems to be nearing its end,” he said. “But what’s come from it so far feels as eerily controlled and haphazardly punitive as what’s followed the repeal of alcohol’s prohibition, a reminder that many American freedoms are easier to brag about than put into practice.”

SEATTLE AND WASHINGTON HAVE CONTINUED PASSING NEW LAWS TIGHTLY GOVERNING MARIJUANA POSSESSION AND USE, AS IF POT HAS SUDDENLY BECOME A PROBLEM UNDER LEGALIZATION.

are taught from a young age that our opinions matter and should be respected! Parents naturally assume the responsibility to teach their children about the world as to ensure their (and the world’s) longevity. But who is watching out for the adults? It’s society, of course! I have personally witnessed Cannabis heal ailments and treat diseases, which isn’t new for those who’ve worked in the MMJ program. The people’s medicine has an innate value to society, and to the people who use it as an affordable addition to modern medicine. The adopted green cross is a widely known symbol for medical Cannabis, whose industry has a marred past. While some business campaigns and state policies would align toward the green cross, actions speak about agendas that are less and less about social health. Assuming we don’t run out of water, food or air, I’d argue that health is the largest universal issue in society. Health covers four main topics including mental, physical, social and emotional, all of which are dependent on each other to create balance. These basics are easy to understand. But who is ensuring that these basic health needs are being implemented? It’s society of course! I spend $245 a month on healthcare insurance. This is considered middle of the road insurance, which still seems expensive considering my age

(27), consistent health and income level. I sign up mostly because I’m confident I won’t go bankrupt (medical bills are 65 percent of all personal bankruptcies) if a random act of God happens. The insurance also allows me to receive personal health mentoring at a large subsidized rate, though no access to medical Cannabis. This mentoring includes subsidized access to professionals that also help me with more personal issues like control, body positivity, and my inherited great-grandma’s bunions. Who is benefiting from me loving myself and wrestling with my dark spots? It’s society, of course! But let’s get one thing straight: society is really confusing. I see more media highlighting what makes us different from each other. As a result, society seems to idolize its differences as monuments of importance, which is seen in our current political party divide and generational gap. Personal differences come in all colors, flavors, roles, and incomes. These differences perforate our character in ways that aren’t necessarily apparent, which make personal relationship issues and larger society remedies exhausting and ostracizing.

THE DAY THE CHILD REALIZES THAT ALL ADULTS ARE IMPERFECT, HE BECOMES AN ADOLESCENT; THE DAY HE FORGIVES THEM, HE BECOMES AN ADULT; THE DAY HE FORGIVES HIMSELF, HE BECOMES WISE.” -Alden Nowlan

I think it’s easy to say there is no winning recipe when it comes to happiness, but that’d be an overstatement. Health is happiness, and most of what the Western world grapples with are simply degrees of happiness. Sure, money can help, but it also makes more problems, of which the green cross will bear.

MIKE ILLVESTER & ADRA BOO

FLY MOON ROYALTY Like a tale from a musician’s storybook, this creative duo met while working day jobs and still managed to make music and produce a new album. Mike and Adra talk about getting their start, picking a name and what they want in the green room of their dream show.

28/FEB. 2016 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Cannabis plant | Washington Bud Company Gold puff ottoman | Jonathan Adler Mala with white horn | Jewelry By Justine Prop styling by Malina Lopez

How did you guys meet? Adra: We worked at a restaurant together downtown. Mel’s Market. The owner had made the new people go around and talk about who they were. Mike said, “I’m a producer for a hip-hop group.” I was like, “bing! I need a producer.” After that whole meeting was done, I walked right up to him to talk music. He gave me a CD, I listened to it, and then we talked about music every day until we started working together.

How would you describe Fly Moon Royalty’s sound? Adra: You know, I would call it music with feels. How does it feel? It’s soul music doing its own thing, doing whatever it wants to do. Mike: That question and how we came up with the name is always tough to answer. Indie soul, RnB and funk is how we package it. KEXP called us electro soul. Chocolate, a local RnB singer’s description was my fav: rebel dance music. With a sprinkle of hip-hop in there with some electronic textures here and there.

THE BAND’S LATEST ALBUM IS CALLED “DELICIOUS TROUBLE.”

Since you mentioned it, how did you choose the name?

When did you guys know music was your passion?

Adra: We actually had a different band name, Sugar Water Purple, from a Dave Chappelle skit, but we found out another band in L.A. had same name six months longer than we did. They sent us a nice letter, and we had a very short amount of time to switch names, but ultimately the more glorious story is that the name is like a feeling; the words are a totem.

Mike: I bought turntables in ’98. It was my only clue to making beats. I taught myself how to DJ and started buying equipment and making beats, started a music program in 2000. The rest, as they say, is history. Adra: I knew I could sing when I was a kid, but I didn’t want to do it in front of everybody until like maybe 17. I started doing theater for the summer, and then I did that every year for like 11 years, and I have a tattoo of the theater company on my back; it and I were the only things that hadn’t changed. I didn’t really write any of my own stuff until 2008, first time I actually wrote a song, meeting Mike was all around the same time that I started performing as a musician. Today I’m kinda an open book. Everything about me is into music. It will be interesting for my kids to see this: making videos inside dispensaries and massive grows.

Mike: The words fly moon royalty evoke certain feelings that had a good vibe to us. We came up with the name after we made the music; the words themselves are not so literal, but the words conjure up certain feelings, separate but together. We bring a lot of styles and mood to our music, which captures it for us. It’s like having a child and naming him at 15. It already has a personality.

what’s it like to have a day job & pursue music at night? Mike: I wasn’t gonna work at the job. I was five months new to Seattle and needed work. I was like, “fine.” It was meant to be. It was pretty ideal. We wrote all of our songs at work, Adra wrote most of the first record on butcher paper. I’d run out of the back with an idea. We draw from our or parallel experiences.

You have a new album coming out. What are the details? Mike: The album is called Delicious Trouble and it will be featuring Hollis from Flavr Blue, Galen from Pickwick and Caela Bailey. There are songs dropping in early 2016 and the full record will be coming out in April. We’ve been on a few tours, a national tour last year, seven weeks on the road. We drove from here and ended up in Miami. We just played a show with Sir Mix-a-Lot last month in Seattle.

What are your biggest goals for the future? Adra: World domination. I want to be 90 and still kicking ass like Tina Turner. I want us to be making music people are fucking with forever.

If you could have any dream rider (pre-show request)? Adra: Peace and quiet, perhaps all the green M&M’s in a jar, chilled red wine, that was my drink on tour; have one drink each night, a foot massage or a masseuse, bring a table. After the show, a joint too, with the massage. And then get me a PB & J. Mike: I put it on our actual rider, a little person dressed like an Ewok that only says, “yep yep.” The funny part is, we go to shows and people actually apologize that they couldn’t find it. technology

By WES ABNEY | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN

Missed Connugtions Singles have Tinder, social drinkers have Bar Roulette, even vacant beds can make money on Airbnb, but somehow Cannabis enthusiasts have been left out of the tech-connect revolution. Trying to find new people to smoke with can be downright difficult with Cannabis lounges becoming the new speakeasies. That was the inspiration for Sesh — an app to link up and smoke out. 32/FEB. 2016 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

THE APP CONNECTS USERS BY LOCATION USING GEOFENCING, WHERE A USER CAN CHOOSE A RANGE AND START MESSAGING OTHER USERS TO START A SESH, FROM AROUND THE BLOCK TO 60 MILES OR MORE.

Sesh co-founders Jared Mirsky, Justin Friedl and Eric Gaston at Mirsky’s Seattle office.

A

smartphone app created by a trio of Seattle Cannabis businessmen has launched to end the problem of finding people to smoke with. Sesh is the newest pot lifestyle app to hit the Internet, creating connections and celebrating the freedom of adults to enjoy Cannabis. “The tagline is ‘find your tribe,’” said Sesh co-founder Eric Gaston. Together with his brother-in-law and tech guru Justin Friedl and Cannabis marketing expert Jared Mirsky of Online Marijuana Design, the partners have taken an idea to reality in the digital realm. “It’s the ability to share the interest and passion and love for Cannabis in an easy way that validates love of Cannabis and creates more of a sense of acceptance,” said Gaston, the owner of The Evergreen Market, a lauded recreational store in Renton with a second location in Auburn soon on the way.

“The industry is just now emerging, and being able to create an app for the space where enthusiasts can communicate is a dream opportunity for all of us.” The app works to connect users by location using geofencing, where a user can choose a range and start messaging other users to start a sesh, from one block to 60 miles or more. You can put up a post like “I’m in Belltown with some fire rosin and some GDP flower, who wants to match and take dabs?” Instantly, any user within the range set will get the message and have the opportunity to message and join in. Users have handles like on Twitter or Instagram, and can post pictures or messages directly to the app, and when two or more users connect, a sesh is arranged. “It’s going to be organic connections,” Mirsky said. “You could be at an event, a concert, and set your range and find someone to hook up with and have a sesh. It will also help consumers connect with retail

shops when they’re outside their normal area, and create interactions from consumers.” Retailers are able to have profiles and offer discounts or specials through the message boards, but there are no annoying pop-up ads or banners to click through. “The app itself is a vehicle for people to communicate, not a method for people to sell or over-advertise pot. But this will be a platform for businesses to make successful campaigns direct to consumers and for a private group of users to be excited about Cannabis and to share with each other,” Mirsky said. “We want to create bigger and bigger communities the retailers can communicate with. Our challenge will be to keep the app pure, focused on the consumer and their experience, and not just spamming an audience with ads.” Although the app is focused in Washington, the trio wants to take the app to other states and countries soon. “Right now we are focused on Washington, but we plan to roll this out in every state. Every state has people that use and enjoy Cannabis as a vehicle for people to share and communicate their passions,” Gaston said. They believe that Cannabis users worldwide should have the ability to meet and consume, and that this app can bring personal freedom and help the industry emerge from the shadows of hidden consumption. “The Cannabis community in general is really inclusive and exclusive by design, and it has been marginalized for so long that it’s really crying out for a space where people can interact, talk and engage in a more normalized and inclusive environment,” he said. “We want people to find their tribe and realize it’s a lot bigger than anyone imagined.”

Sesh is available for free download

on Apple App Store/Android Play. Try it today and look for new friends and special discounts from local stores.

INTERNATIONAL CANNABIS BUSINESS CONFERENCE

International Cannabis Business Conference Feb. 13-14 | San Francisco Hyatt Regency InternationalCBC.com The 2016 ICBC includes a special performance by Del tha Funky Homosapien, with appearances by Andrew Sullivan, Tommy Chong, and Ed Rosenthal at Pier 23 Feb. 13 from 8p to 1a. The concert is free for ICBC ticket holders.

ICBC founder Alex Rogers knows this show

is a major step forward. Rogers also founded and produces the Oregon Marijuana Business Conference (OMBC), which has had several successful shows since creating the idea in early 2014, and this will be the third ICBC show. “I decided that since there was and still is so much misinformation in the industry that someone needed to get it straight, and that’s what pushed the first conference in January of 2015. Since then, we have sold out shows all over Oregon and have had tremendous success with a reputation for quality conferences and quality speakers,” Rogers explained in a phone interview. He is also the CEO of Ashland Alternative Health and NW Alternative Health authorization clinics, and co-founder of marijuanapolitics.com. Rogers and his team started producing conferences when the first Oregon dispensary law passed in 2013, mainly to fill a gap that they saw for producers and retailers in the industry. “With the success of Oregon conferences, I thought about going international, because my vision is to legalize across the world, not just America, but we are starting the first international shows in the U.S.,” he said. The San Francisco show boasts a stellar lineup of speakers which includes Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. Surgeon General, Andrew Sullivan of “The Dish,” Tommy Chong, Ed Rosenthal, the founders of Spannabis and Cannafest, top attorneys and more. A major draw to this event, Rogers said, will be a first-ever bipartisan panel between Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), who will debate marijuana policy from the standpoint of the highest levels of government. “Cannabis is something that is so unique in politics and it covers so many avenues that it’s able

to bring people on seemingly opposite sides of the spectrum together and finding commonality in a common sense issue, so that it doesn’t matter if you’re Democratic or Republican,” Rogers said. “We’re all good for each other at this point in the industry. We’re all priming the pump for growth. By pushing for exciting speakers that break the typical stoner mold of pot shows, Rogers and his team have caused the ICBC and OMBC conferences to stand out in an industry full of competing trade shows. And that’s what makes the show special. “We’re not just a biz conference. ICBC is a cultural event with a tremendous amount of politics, art and advocacy,” Rogers said. “If you want to be successful in this space, you need to understand the business as an attendee. We’re for people who are just interested in the industry and smart and hard-working who will glean the most from it, and have a really fun time, too!” Already looking to the future, Rogers has planned ICBC dates for Oct. 2016 in Vancouver, B.C., Feb. 2017 in San Francisco and April 2017 in Berlin. By blending information, business and politics, along with a healthy dose of fun, the ICBC pathway looks like a solid opportunity for the cannabusiness community around the world.

“WE’RE NOT JUST A BIZ CONFERENCE. ICBC IS A CULTURAL EVENT WITH A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF POLITICS, ART AND ADVOCACY,” FOUNDER ALEX ROGERS SAID.

is widely unknown, most likely originating from somewhere in the Bay Area and rumored to be a Cookie Fam creation. Opening the bag reveals dense, dark purple nugs and releases the cherry fuel aroma. The expert cure shows as the buds easily snap off the stem while still being sticky. Nelson & Company Organics is dedicated to growing the cleanest medicine possible, which is evident in his finished product. Each plant Nelson & Company grows is on the verge of death before harvest to ensure that it has been properly flushed of its nutrients. Many growers like to harvest at peak health when the plant is still lush, green and taking food. The high is an even balance of head and body effects that starts in the forehead and transgresses into a couchlocking stone. The high lasts for about two hours, which is the amount of time I spent in front of the refrigerator. The lethargic and relaxing effects of Cherry Kush make it the perfect strain to reach for after a long day at work. This strain is also great for squishing into rosin as it yields around 17-19 percent.

The Anubis Extracts version of this strain comes in the form of a lightcolored snap and pull that almost blends in with the parchment. Breaking off a few pieces with a dabber releases a coffees and berries aroma that makes the mouth water. I dabbed a few shards at a low temperature on a quartz nail and was very impressed with the flavor. The coffee and berries profile carries through on the taste as it lingers on the palate long after dabbing. The starting material was organically grown without the use of pesticides, ensuring a clean product. About five minutes after dabbing, I began to feel lethargic and rather sleepy. My plans to go out that night were thwarted as I could not pass up the ultimate temptation known as a couch. The next morning, I woke up with little recollection of how I managed to comfortably sleep for about 12 hours on the sofa. Given the lethargic, sedative effects I experienced, this strain is best suited for consumers looking for a relaxing, sedative high. Anubis Extracts can be found at a variety of dispensaries all around the greater Portland area.

ublications across the nation are buzzing about the mystery and potential of Cannabis. Other than treating a slew of medical ailments, rumor has it that Cannabis makes sex better. It’s certainly a sexy headline, but also no secret. When examining the Reefer Madness era, the sexual awakening catalyzed by Cannabis was used against women to deter initial Cannabis use. But the enhanced pleasure experienced when mixing Cannabis and sex should no longer remain taboo. Before we get started, I think it’s important to look beyond a mere physical connection between sex and Cannabis. We want to build sustainable love through bonding emotional intimacy, not just physical acts of pleasure. Let us examine the nuances of vulnerability and our abilities to honestly communicate with one another by building real intimacy through intentional Cannabis use. Whether you find yourself in a committed relationship or single, Cannabis is a game changer in the bedroom. Beyond getting high and fucking, I believe the first step to great sex and true intimacy requires a high degree of vulnerability, i.e., the willingness to put yourself out there and be open to love and romance. Cannabis has been known to lower inhibitions. Traditionally, that sentiment has been used against users, making logical leaps that paint Cannabis users as immoral. In terms of intimacy in sexual relationships, Cannabis can do the heavy lifting of easing initial tension to unwind. Unlike alcohol, Cannabis

Simone Fischer is a Portland OMMP patient and Cannabis advocate. She is a contributing editor at Ladybud Magazine and a graduate of women’s and gender studies from Portland State University.

The enhanced pleasure experienced with mixing Cannabis and sex should no longer remain taboo doesn’t have any physical drawbacks in terms of romance when used responsibly. Sloppy (usually drunk) sessions are the fastest way to drain the romance out of any encounter, new or old. Being vulnerable and alert is key to building intimacy. Fully relax and focus on the pleasure of your partner’s company. Cannabis can help quiet intrusive thoughts (such as: “is this position unflattering?”), and focus on the real task at hand. Being fully present isn’t as easy as it seems in this day and age. Between non-stop phone technology, emails and constant texts, slowing everything down is difficult. The addition of Cannabis to this year’s Valentine’s Day routine is worth a shot. Take a puff or dab. The first step is losing your inhibitions, trusting vulnerability. Begin to notice the change of intimacy and attunement between you and your partner. I am not ashamed to admit a handful of Valentine’s Days went south fast because of alcohol. Cannabis is a whole other story: I feel heightened and engaged. Focusing on building intimacy with your partner with the help of Cannabis isn’t an entirely new concept; so much has already been said on the topic of heteronormative sex and Cannabis. But what really happens after your smoke weed and have sex? Where is the emotional depth? How can Cannabis help you access or, better yet, understand these feelings? Although cannabis has been said to boost libido by acting as an aphrodisiac, I’d go one step further. Whether it’s tolerating each other on a day-to-day level or getting to know a side of someone you never knew existed, Cannabis can help fundamentally improve the quality of our relationships. We continue to grow personally every day; the addition of Cannabis may help us to grow together.

In light of an intimate holiday, I highly recommend Cannabis for anyone’s relationship. Cannabis doesn’t desensitize like alcohol does and the rate of domestic violence in cases of alcohol versus Cannabis is telling. Studies have shown the risk of violence against women increased in the presence of heavy or binge drinking days, nights or events. The correlation between domestic or dating-related violence and Cannabis is rare (marijuana being the only isolating factor) when booze isn’t present. Unsurprisingly, women were major alcohol prohibition supporters in the 1920s. Women endured domestic violence at epidemic proportions, literally getting the shit kicked out of them by their drunk husbands. Addiction coupled with violence are two problems that transcend race and class: problems clearly affecting more women than you’d think. Although their intention was noble, we all know prohibition does nothing to solve the problems of domestic violence we still see today. Alcohol addiction is cruel and complex. Since Cannabis is legalized, more couples should explore Cannabis in terms of recreation, medicine and healing. Using Cannabis won’t cure a bad relationship or guarantee mind-blowing sex. Cannabis won’t directly fix communication issues or change whatever problems you experience overnight. It can, however, help you get off your high horse, pick your battles, and let it go. It takes two (or more if you’re into it) fully present people to work on their relationship and enjoy our cheesy holiday. Instead of reaching for the bubbly, roll one yourself and experience psychedelic intimacy if you do Valentine’s Day the Northwest way.

IN TERMS OF INTIMACY IN SEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS, CANNABIS CAN help to relax and unwind. feb. 2016 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

DESCRIPTION

Maca Root is a vegetable root or tuber, distantly related to the Mexican Wild Yam.

When maca is harvested, the roots are dried by exposing them to sunlight for four to six days. After they have dried, they can be stored in cool, dark places for several years. For consumption, the dried roots are rehydrated by boiling them in water until they are soft.

PARTS USED

The nutritional value of dried maca root is high. In addition to sugars and proteins, maca contains uridine, malic acid and its benzoyl derivative, and the glucosinolates glucotropaeolin and m-methoxyglucotropaeolin.

ACTIVE CONSTITUENTS

Traditionally, maca has been used as a stress reliever, an aphrodisiac and for fertility enhancement in both males and females. Recently, commercial maca products have gained popularity in areas outside of South America as dietary supplements with claims of boosting energy, enhancing fertility, balancing hormones, acting as an aphrodisiac and enhancing sexual performance.

HISTORICAL USES

Maca is used for anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and enhancing energy, stamina, athletic performance and memory. It helps with female hormone imbalance and menstrual irregularities, enhancing fertility, menopause symptoms, osteoporosis, depression, stomach cancer, leukemia, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and impotence. It is also used as an immunostimulant.

MEDICINAL USES

Plants in the Brassicaceae family, such as maca, are often rich in vitamin K. Thus, maca may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. Some examples include aspirin, anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin, antiplatelet drugs such as clopidogrel (Plavix) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve).

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Available studies in humans have only been performed on male subjects. In these trials, no side effects were noted and maca was generally considered safe. Maca has not been studied in women.

laucoma is a group of eye disorders that are the second leading cause of blindness in the US, second only to diabetic complications of the eye. There are four major types of glaucoma. These eye disorders are marked by elevating pressure in the eyeball and subsequent damage to the optic nerve and loss of eyesight. Glaucoma can cause blindness if untreated. Currently there is no cure for glaucoma, and any eyesight lost cannot be regained. But there is some indication that Cannabis can be an effective treatment option for glaucoma, by lowering pressure on the eye naturally. This was underscored by the glaucoma pa-

tient Robert C. Randall’s landmark 1974 Federal court case, which allowed him to use Cannabis as it was “medically necessary,” making him the first legal Cannabis patient in America. It is estimated that approximately 2.2 million people in the US have glaucoma and only half are diagnosed. Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from young to old, with 1 in 10,000 babies born with glaucoma! Elderly, diabetic, African-American and Hispanic populations are at greater risk, or those with family histories. Symptoms can be vague and mild for a long period of time before an individual seeks care or is diagnosed on routine evaluation. Loss of peripheral vision, or headaches are usual presenting symptoms. An eye exam should ideally be per-

formed yearly including a “puff test” in which a puff of air is directed at the eye to measure pressure in the eyeball. There are two chambers within the eye. At the front of the eye is the anterior chamber containing the aqueous humour, or watery substance. This fluid is produced behind the colored part of the eye, or the iris. This fluid is continually being made and must drain out of the anterior angle. Anything that blocks this drainage allows the pressure inside the eyeball, or the intraocullar pressure (IOP), to increase. FOR MORE The two most common forms ON GLAUCOMA of glaucoma are Open-Angle and Angle-Closure; and Glaucoma.org they present very differently.

This plant has much to offer the glaucoma patient or perhaps even the individual with a family history who would like to reduce their likelihood. To review, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the US and is caused by increasing pressure in the eye, and damage to the optic nerve. Cannabis has been shown to reduce IOP and is neuroprotective, or reducing harm being done to the nerve thereby continuing to prove its “medical necessity.”

pen-Angle is a chronic insidious process that tends to come on with few symptoms. This chronic form tends to run in families and is managed over time once recognized. There is often a degree of eyesight lost by time of diagnosis as the slowly building pressure damages the nerve. In stark contrast Angle-Closure is an acute emergency often with severe acute eye pain, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms may come and go at first, but will steadily worsen. Once an individual has had one Angle-Closure event, they are at risk of further risk of a subsequent attack. These patients are often subjected to laser surgeries, oral and IV medications- with many side effects, along with steroid eye drops. But some of the eye drops are Cannabis-like. Nabilone is a THC analogue, or a kind of lookalike of an active ingredient from the Cannabis plant that is administered in an eye drop, and Marinol is a pill form of basically the same, and both are used in treating glaucoma patients. Neither has shown impressive results in studies or clinical outcomes with patients. There continues to be however, an ever increasing focus on cannabinoid therapies isolating compounds from the Cannabis plant in research today. There has not been much research focused on the plant itself and it’s 400 plus plant compounds and how they work together. Work done in the early 1970’s in Jamaica demonstrated a significant reduction in intraocullar pressure in male patients with diagnosed glaucoma who used Cannabis. Hinging off of this work was a study written up in the Journal of Ophthalmology, 3/1980. With 18 participants, the author’s concluded that “our study verifies that marijuana lowers both IOP and blood pressure in a heterogeneous glaucoma population.” Until recently the IOP-lowering effects of Cannabis have been thought to be through the action of the central nervous system. More current research has shown that the anatomical distribution of certain cannabinoind receptors within the eye are suggestive that the endo-cannabinoid system may have dictation over the aqueous humour outflow and production. Other research findings have shown that the vaso-dilatory effects in the eye are helpful for aqueous humoural outflow. This is the typical bloodshot eye effect from use of Cannabis. Cannabis has had a long history in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma. Research has been conducted to look at the effects of isolate

Micro strains

there is a lot of turmoil in the Cannabis indus-

try and conflicting perceptions of reality. It is time to sit back and focus. Some say that the Medical Cannabis industry is too “wild west” and “under regulated. I say that is the way it should be. It is this very quality that allows groundbreaking discoveries at such a sustained rate. It would be incomprehensible to imagine that Big Pharma would be able to generate a cure as quickly as the Cash Hyde Foundation and their supporters have. Cashy’s Honey was the answer for young Cash Hyde, who sadly lost the battle with cancer before the medicine could become available for him. Although it was not made in time to save him, this medicine is fortunately now available to others in similar need. A mix of DulcaCanna and AK 47, Cashy’s Honey is a unique blend of CBN, CBC, and CBD that is touted to be an excellent cancer fighter. Integrity Testing provided a comprehensive breakdown of the active ingredients: THC 8.9%, CBN 3.0%, CBC 1.7% and a whopping CBD 18.3%. The bulk of these plants will go to concentrate form for specific patients. It was an honor to experience the definition of a Micro Strain. The dried flower has a sweet oily aroma with a hint of citrus. At first glance the leaves look gray, but closer inspection reveals a bed of medicine-filled trichomes, with little if any leaf surface visible. Vaporizing renders a quick body and mind relief with just enough Sativa influence to keep you alert. No matter what this new year brings, excellent strides have been made. Mike Hyde has been a kind of “Johnny Appleseed,” spreading clones far and wide. Kris Haskins of Sonshine Organics nurtured the first flowers of Cashy’s Honey shown here. We are at a crossroad, with Medical Cannabis hanging in the balance — we must not lose focus. Growing this flower is no easy task. There are so many things that can go wrong that even the best experts are stumped once and a while. We need dispensaries and safe access. Make your voices heard. Cashy’s Honey is hope.

IT’S THE TIME OF YEAR AGAIN when a new beginning marks yet another chance to adopt new formulas, techniques and devices all designed to assist growers to produce better Cannabis plants. With the continued number of walls being shattered as a new age of legal, recreational Cannabis production and distribution is ushered in, so too the ancillary services and products that support Cannabis production are becoming more prolific. We growers have seen a slew of new products both good and bad. In this month’s column, I want to review a couple innovative products with significant traction or market penetration, and highlight some of the best products this brave new world has created. OG Bio War

MICROBIAL INOCULATE OGBioWar.com Although Capulator has made OG Bio War since well before 2015, his feverish pursuit of excellence over the years has lead to the continued refinement of the formula to include the most effective strains of bacterium. I have used OG Bio War for almost three years and can report truly astonishing results in creating plants seemingly immune to the pathogens and diseases most common in my style of gardening. But I’m not alone. Quite literally everyone I know who has tried the product and applies it correctly reports the same or with similar results. A truly all-inclusive line, most growers will never need to add additional inoculates as this formula is a cure-all. Regardless if you are preventing against or treating for powdery and downy mildew, botrytis, damping off, fusarium wilt, pythium, root aphids or much more, OG Bio War has you covered. When used in container environments as a root drench, the medium is inoculated with a robust population of microbes that will create powerful symbiotic relationships with the plants in ideal conditions and allow superior nutrient uptake and drought resistance. It’s important when applying the product as foliar spray (which works great) that you apply the AACT correctly. This is not specific to OG Bio War but rather a guideline for effectively applying any compost tea. Generally, growers will spray their plants during the dark cycle to avoid burning leaves from the proximately to the light source. Many farmers also dial their conditions in to minimize humidity during this period. It’s important to adjust your garden during the time you apply a live compost tea as well as for the several hours immediately following the application. To account for the fact that most microbes thrive at high humidity levels, it’s critical that you minimize, if not eliminate, all fans and set humidity levels to allow for 65 percent or 70 percent. This allows the microbes that you spray to stay alive long enough to interact with the plant through its phyllosphere. While this will make conditions more ideal for harmful pathogens to attack, you will easily outcompete them during the application. I like to spray around half way through the dark period, allowing humidity levels to climb to 70 percent for five hours or so then bringing humidity down into a lower range and bringing the fans/air circulation back up for the last approximate hour of the dark period. It’s also helpful to filter the tea through a stocking as the product is suspended in pharmaceutical-grade talc. While totally benign to plants, it can leave behind a white powdery residue that is unsightly and looks far too much like powdery mildew, not to give you a heart attack after every application.

Vegamatrix

NUTRIENT LINE AND MICROBIAL INOCULATE PureLifeVeganix.com Kyle Kushman, already a Cannabis celebrity and award-winning grower, assembled his complete, easy-to-apply, 100 percent veganic recipe for growing Cannabis he reports using and refining throughout his career with results that speak for themselves. Practicing a completely animal-free nutrient application, enthusiastic veganic farmers report this feeding schedule results in consistently lower residual metals,

OSA 28 CONTINUED

Following the trend of using what we already know works most effectively, Microbe Life provides yet another high-quality line of microbial inoculates, making it easier still for any grower to harness the power of the soil food web. One of the features of this line that makes it unique is that they have specifically formulated the inoculates to complement the growth stage the plant is in. Providing more of the strains of bacterium that fix and digest the nutrients in highest demand allows farmers to get more out of their organic additives. Again, decreasing the learning curve by organising the microbes you are inoculating your plants with to account for the stage of growth they are in allows for a more efficient and productive rhizosphere. Even if you are using all mineral-based nutrients, the Photosynthesis Plus foliar spray is an excellent microbial spray that creates a noticeable difference in the garden. While this product isn’t OMRI-rated, it falls into the category

Heavy 16 Foliar Spray MICRONUTRIENT FOLIAR SUPPLEMENT Heavy16.com

If I were to select just one foliar-only product that has made the strongest difference in my garden, the award would have to go the Heavy 16 PFN (professional foliar nutrient). It’s a foliar that contains a reasonably wide spectrum of macronutrients and trace elements and some low macro in carb base that creates a protective film on the leaves for a few days. Used weekly, a wide variety of plants in accelerated growth environments show improved rates of health and vigor. This formula corrects any potential deficiencies quickly and efficiently and ensures rapid growth rates. It also coats the leaf with a film that provides added protection against pathogens and improves photosynthesis rates. Like many of the most effective products, this one isn’t a low-cost item, however, I’ve had great success applying at half to two-thirds the rate as directed on the label, increasing as plant maturity improves. At this application rate, the cost per application is very reasonable and the results are noticeable within a few weeks.

OSA28

Osa28.com I heard it’s a good idea to save the best for last and so I’ve done exactly that for you. Finally, a company has brought to market a plant-available silicon formula. Gone are the days of applying potassium silicate in the hopes that enough of this element build in the medium and conditions are ideal enough to be broken down into a form of silica readily available for the plant uptake. Silica is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s surface behind oxygen.

W

Although a virtual and literal sea of new products have come to market as Cannabis continues to gain acceptance, these are slices of the few that I have either worked directly or very closely with and can personally attest to their results and quality. All of the items selected are also, at least in some way, completely compatible with existing programs. So get out there and grow something amazing, and as always, Happy Gardening! of so many high-quality products that, in my honest opinion, are in all practical ways organic. In the case of Microbe Life, the sulphur suspension they use in the Photosynthesis Plus reportedly isn’t organic, but it doesn’t have any of the toxic effects that spraying a mineral-based nutrient would have on an organic environment.

BE S

healthier growth and vigor along with the cleanest, most flavorful herb on the planet. Bold claims, true, but it’s no surprise that utilizing soil food web principles would yield such results. Like most high-quality nutrient line, you won’t find 300 different additives, each of which claims to offer still a larger, frostier, more flavorful flower. A base, camp, a few boosters and enzyme is all that comprises the line. When combined with an ideal environment created using the full line of vegamatrix microbial tea inoculates, this formula is a high-quality, fully vegan nutrient application line that would take a very firm understanding of veganic farming to piece together independently, thereby dramatically shortening the learning curve for anyone interested in converting to veganic farming practices. While the cost for the full line is anything but low, it certainly isn’t the most expensive nutrient on the market. Having said that, I find that providing an all-in-one, nutritionally complete, vegan recipe for effectively farming Cannabis to be a generous and beneficial tool for the growing community. Specifically made for container gardening and drain to waste setups, don’t try using this formula in a recirculating system.

Without going off on a biochemical tangent, from a high-altitude view, one might estimate that when you attempt to grow something found in nature in an environment devoid of the second most abundant element it’s accustomed to growing in, something might be different. Said another way, if you have grown indoors in an environment devoid of this element and you add it, what do you think could happen?
It’s not often that I can add one single additive to my nutrient formula and notice significant improvements without changing anything else. Well this one actually is as awesome as I’ve ever seen. You don’t need to take my word for it either. They give samples of their product away on the website for the cost of shipping — not a special promo shipping rate: the lowest rate a retail customer pays for any purchase. It’s not a huge sample, but that’s sorta what makes it special. The very first week, I noticed a huge improvement that continued on into the second. The health the plants displayed were absolutely off the charts. Where I usually see early signs of stress or mild deficiency running supercharged DWC, I saw none. This lead to the fastest rates of growth and flower development I’ve experienced, combined with a utilization of nutrients that increased nutrient uptake approximately 35 percent, which is almost unfathomable in my system. Stronger side branching and earlier conversion to bloom phase produced extra-stalky, wider plants that prayed P R O D UC T S 1820 hours a day. I saw the hype. I purchased the sample, ready to rant on about the uselessness of another rip-off magic formula and, after the second application was back on their website, ended up purchasing the rest of the round’s worth. Behind all these amazing results is an equally amazing company. The laboratory facility the product is produced in is run by practicing and teaching biochemists who boast five PhDs between them. One hundred percent sourced, produced and manufactured in the U.S.A., OSA/28’s unbridled commitment to excellence and rigorous quality standards ensures purity and consistency in each batch of what can be a volatile and difficult chemical manufacturing process. Most impressive to me however, is that unlike some other more advanced companies, they don’t lead with the world-class staff or manufacturing facility. They lead with unmatched results that countless growers who use all different types of nutrient brands, growing methods and environments report over and over.

GUEST GARDENER: WELCOME BACK BIG C

SECRET RECIPE CANDY CHEM BAG REPORT & SMOKE APPEAL beautiful and coated with crystals, the secret recipe presents

herself as a nimbly balanced mint-colored spear. It looks quite hybrid with yellow and orange hairs tucked neatly behinds bulging calyx’s. The deep aroma of sweet pine burst out of the sample and is quickly taken over by a fuely chemy tones of the parental lineage. With such heavy hitting parents I was surprised at how sweet and comforting the smell was, but the savagely delicious chemy roots poured though in the flavor of the smoke. Hard hitting, fuely sour chem is all she has for flavor until….oh wait there’s that sweet taste again. Almost like a welcomed pat on the back of your tongue for enduring the chemical treatment, saying “hey, it’s okay, try it again…”

HOW IT GROWS

LINEAGE

like a sour d crossed with chem d, which is not surprising considering that is pretty much to what she is. She stretches between double and triple in flower before morphing into the quadruple diesel she wants to. The chem also tames the diesel structure and adds significant density to the buds.Staking is a necessary part of bloom for CC. The stems, again, are a compromise of chem sturdiness and diesel lank so less staking is needed than with Sour D. I’m a believer in plucking some fan leaves mid way through bloom but with this one it’s less crucial. She doesn’t have the abundant or palm tree size leaves many plants have. I’ve noticed that she wants extra cal mag throughout the grow but more noticeably in flower. She also likes more nitrogen than most. I keep adding it until the last three weeks of the 10-plus week flower. She wants between 70 to 77 days of 12/12! For most growers that long of a flower is a non-starter but I happen to love this plant so I’m willing. The buds reflect light as though coated with morning dew and, when finishing, the red hairs kind of disappear. The impression is that of pure light green sparkling buds. And did I mention the smell in the room — very ripe mangoes and candy with an under tone of skunk and diesel — it just makes me happy!

pressure. Oh yes, hello bright sunshiny day. Secret Recipe even leaves you with that sweet taste which comes with a comforting but awakened sense of creativity. Not what I’ve come to expect out of your basic Chem Diesel Kush crosses but more of a trick of your senses with a delicate balance of sweet and sour on the palate...and on the mind; wait what?
