Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up this special issue of Oregon Leaf! Our Concentrates Issue is my favorite of the year for one simple reason: I love dabs! My first dab was around 2011 - in the century old boiler room below the now closed Northern Cross Collective Gardens in Bellingham, Washington. I remember feeling the oil touch the red hot nail as the vapor burst into my lungs with the force of a thousand bong hits. The world closed in around me and I felt the reverberation of raw THC as it pulsed through my blood and into my mind, sending me away for the next few hours - humming with a high that was unlike anything else.

LOOK CLOSELY AND YOU’LL SEE THAT CONCENTRATES COVER EVERY ASPECT OF CANNABIS.
Over the last decade of publishing and working in Cannabis, I have personally seen the concentrate world evolve from homemade Rick Simpson Oil and open-blasted butane hash oil, to highly medicinal mono-cannabinoid extracts and vaporizable concentrates of all kinds, to being the precursor to a new world of edibles, topicals, capsules and more. For our Concentrates Issue we sought out the best examples of the different types of extractions, to share how they affect the body and the science behind the scenes. Concentrating Cannabis means exactly what it sounds like: taking a full plant and using a process or solvent to extract the purest essence of it. This makes it incredibly important to only consume high quality, pesticide tested concentrates. Quality concentrates have the ability to impart healing values that Cannabis flower alone cannot replicate, delivering a pure flavor and experience that captures the taste and effect of fresh Cannabis in a perfect dab. Look closely and you’ll see that concentrates cover every aspect of Cannabis - every product beyond flower - from medical to recreational uses and benefits. Our comprehensive Concentrates Issue covers the different extraction methods, terminology, ways to consume and much more. So take a dab, flip through this beautiful and informational issue, and learn something new that you can share with someone in need of Cannabis - as a plant and a medicine. And as always, thanks for reading and sharing the Leaf!

Nevada in June became the latest state with legal Cannabis sales to pardon folks convicted of possessing small amounts of weed, reports the AP. The State Board of Pardons Commissioners voted unanimously on June 17 to unconditionally pardon anyone convicted in the past two decades of possessing an ounce or less. That was the amount allowed when Nevada began allowing adult marijuana sales in 2017.

At the House Judiciary Committee markup on legislation focused on policing, the congressman linked prohibition to some of the problems the bill seeks to address, reports Marijuana Moment. “One of the issues I’d like to take note of is our national drug policy right now federal Cannabis policy, essentially outlawing Cannabis,” Correa said. “As you know, when we talk about arrest disparities, over 650,000 Americans are arrested every year for violating Cannabis laws.” The Congressman added that black people are significantly more likely to be arrested for marijuana compared to white people, despite comparable rates of consumption.

LOUISIANA INCREASES MMJ ACCESS

tarting in August, more Louisiana doctors will be able to authorize medical marijuana for any patient they believe it would help - not just those with major health issues. Significantly more residents will have access to medicinal Cannabis under the major expansion of the state’s program that Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards signed into law. Louisiana had finally established access for patients in August 2019, four years after state lawmakers agreed to allow medical marijuana. The legislation originally allowed Cannabis to treat serious conditions such as cancer, seizure disorders, epilepsy, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder and Parkinson’s disease. A 2019 poll by LSU showed 55 percent of Louisiana residents support legalizing marijuana possession.

CANNABIS SALES CONTINUE TO BOOM DURING PANDEMIC

For the first time ever, sales exceeded $100 million in one month, according to TJ Sheehy of the OLCC. “The marijuana tax fund is really the only bright spot in the state budget right now,” Sheehy said, reports Oregon Public Broadcasting. “In terms of taxable sales it was about $15 million that’s going to go to the school fund, city and county governments.” Oklahoma had records sales for the fourth month in a row. Consumers spent $73.8 million in medical marijuana in April. In May, state lawmakers passed a bill allowing dispensaries to deliver Cannabis, and also allowing out-of-state people to buy marijuana with a 90-day temporary card. Alas, Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt vetoed that legislation. West coast

OREGON Oregon Cannabis Shows Up Against Police Brutality
The battle against injustice is inextricably interwoven with

aunched in 2018 as the world’s first hip-hop dispensary, North Portland’s Green Hop recently relaunched as Green Muse - with a plan to expand its music and Cannabis model beyond the boundaries of hip-hop. “We still have Green Hop, but we’re also going to have Green Jazz, we’re also going to have Green Blues strains,” budtender Devontae Ahmed said in an Instagram video announcing the rebrand. “We’re also going to have Green Soul strains, we’re going to have Green Rock strains highlighting the different rock artists, we’re going to have Green Funk strains, Green Pop, Green Reggae, Green Country.” One bright spot on the short list of Black-owned businesses in the Oregon Cannabis industry, Green Muse plans to tie together a diverse array of “lifestyle menus,” highlighting athletes, scientists, artists, fashion and culture. They pair strains with important figures in history - on the shelf right now, you can grab a gram of Erykah Badu, Otis Redding or Thelonius Monk. The shop also announced plans to hold a quarterly Cannabis competition called Terp Cup, “judged by Cannabis doctors, scientists, artists, musicians, fashion designers, athletes and budtenders.” They are currently gathering all of the cultivators necessary for the recurring event, and plan to launch the competition in 2021. @gogreenmuse.

City of Portland Agrees to Reallocate Cannabis Taxes In response to a movement championed by the NuLeaf Project and the Oregon Cannabis Association - along with others across the industry - the City of Portland has started the process of reallocating tax revenue culled from product sales in the legal Cannabis industry.
The allocation and disbursement of Cannabis tax revenue has been a point of conflict since legalization hit in 2016, with many claiming that the City has invested a disproportionate amount of those funds to the Portland Police Bureau, rather than investing in positive, community-directed action. According to a May 2019 report by the Portland city auditor, 79% of Cannabis tax revenue went to police and transportation, and there has been little to no transparency about how those funds have been spent. In the midst of global unrest over systemic racism and abuse of power by police departments in the U.S., on June 9, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler announced a plan to divert $12 million from the Portland Police Bureau budget - including funds from Cannabis tax revenue - and plans to redirect those funds to help communities of color. Exactly how that money will be spent remains to be seen. Learn more at nuleafproject.org.

ACCORDING TO A MAY 2019 REPORT BY THE PORTLAND CITY AUDITOR, 79% OF CANNABIS TAX REVENUE WENT TO POLICE AND TRANSPORTATION.
“That’s what the science supports. That’s our approach in Oregon. And that’s why we believe Oregonians deserve access,” said Eckert, the chief petitioner behind the initiative to legalize psilocybin mushrooms for therapeutic purposes. The initiative qualified with more than enough signatures for the November ballot, ahead of the July 2 signature submission deadline.

CANNABIS & THE COPS: IT’S TIME TO TAKE BACK OUR TAXES
This isn’t a call for anarchy or some salute to profound personal liberty. In fact, it would please the person penning if you would look away from any political lenses before reading this piece. As an industry, we have neglected to face some figures that have real-life consequences for friends, family and our fellow humans. As a community, we have let down our neighbors. It’s high time we talk about what we can do and more importantly, put those words to work. The war on drugs has notoriously been brought into the homes of Blacks, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC). In case you’ve been asleep for the last month or so, the world is waking up to the endless list of enduring injustice. Many of us have led a privileged presence in our community because of skin color, socioeconomic status or other reasons. It’s time to admit that we (this writer included) haven’t done enough to help others. While we have reaped the benefits of legalization, people have continued to be profiled and imprisoned at racially disproportionate rates. The latest Federal Bureau of Prisons report highlights that nearly 46% of individuals are being held for “drug offenses,” by far the most common category of incarceration. It’s important to note that while Black folks fill up to 38% of our prisons, they only account for 13% of our nation’s population - statistically shining light on a systemic issue that strikes the core of our Can-
JULY 2020
nabis community. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) found that “in every state, Black people are arrested at higher rates than white people for marijuana.” In America, you’re “3.6 times more likely to be arrested” if you’re Black - even though çannabis use remains comparable among races. The Stanford Open Policing Project has “collected and standardized over 200 million records of traffic stop and search data from across the country.” Their findings present traffic stop search statistics from several legalized and 12 non-legalized states. According to their research, “racial disparities in searches remain and there is a persistent gap in the threshold for searching white and minority drivers.” Even in legalized states, officers continue to pull over and search people of color with a statistically evident bias. It’s a driving force in the war on drugs and just one factor in a frightening picture of oppressive policing. Racial injustices in our country obviously reach far beyond one community and category of arrests. BIPOC in America face a constant uphill battle, but the Cannabis community sits in a unique position to affect change. Our industry brings in a significant chunk of tax revenue and we have to start taking a closer look at who it’s helping and harming. Currently, legislation allocates 15% of Oregon’s Cannabis tax revenue to the state police. At a city level, many officials have an additional 3% to divvy-up, and as it turns out some haven’t exactly been honest about it. In a May 2019 report, even the Portland City Auditor expressed concerns: “The tax was promoted as funds that would benefit and support individuals and Cannabis business owners that were adversely affected when Cannabis was illegal. Since that time, most of the taxes collected have been used for police andtransportation programs.” In direct response to demonstrations against police brutality, Portland Mayor and Police Commissioner Ted Wheeler pledged to cut $12 million from the city’s police budget. Later, Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty announced the approval of an additional 15, totaling $27 million in bureau budget cuts. The discontinuation of “Cannabis tax funds to fill funding gaps for the traffic division” was included in the changes. But Portland details aren’t hashed out and many other cities have failed to speak up. It’s time to take back our taxes and reallocate resources
in ways that affect real change. We need to count Cannabis OUT of the war on drugs, and that starts directly with local and state enforcement. Defunding the police is a touchy topic for some, but a logical look at the matter shows a staggering list of systematic and societal issues exacerbated by a reliance on enforcement. Defunding the police doesn’t mean a descent into lawlessness, but it does mean evolving as a society. What would our community look like if we divested from forceful punishment and preemptively invested in people? According to the ACLU, “1.7 million students are in school with cops but no counselors, 3 million are in schools with cops but no nurses, and 10 million are in school with cops but no social workers.” Would we need fewer officers if we filled these roles and prepared, reacted or responded with the appropriate professionals? We have prioritized police for so long that some folks feel wrong questioning their authority. But better-funded clinics (like White Bird) could respond quickly and compassionately to the homeless person overdosing outside your door. Social workers and negotiators with the manpower to respond to domestic abuse calls could deescalate situations. Schools with higher-paid teachers and better access to counseling could see fewer shootings. More funding for income and food programs could ease a community’s theft rate. These are the types of social services that divested police funds could replenish. Unfortunately, until every last one of our local, national and global leaders step up, the change is in our hands. Call your local leaders and demand they take back Cannabis taxes and defund the police. Vote in officials that might actually listen. Support the BIPOC communities that have been most affected by the war on drugs, and do what you can to diversify our industry. In the meantime, here are a few organizations you can support to make a difference in the Cannabis community: NuLeaf Project nuleafproject.org @nuleafproject The Last Prisoner Project lastprisonerproject.org @lastprisonerproject The Minority Cannabis Business Association minoritycannabis.org @minoritycannabis

THE SCENT OF MEDICINE
Black Life in the Cannabis Industry
It’s June 2, 2020. Injustice is still happening all across the country to Black people. We’re dying by the thousands! Asking that justice be served to those who are accountable and laws are upheld to protect us. It’s done to no avail, but does it surprise me? No. Laws to protect the bodies of Black Americans have always been in question, even as Cannabis is being legalized at an alarming rate. Discrimination has no face and the Cannabis industry is no different.

The argument could be made that Bob Marley was one of the most important driving forces in creating our modern Cannabis culture and ideals. And for that we should all be thankful, because Marley is possibly the best role model a culture like ours could ever hold up. That’s because he was as close to a pure musician and human being that we’ve seen in the modern era - with much of that owed to his spiritual practice.
There’s the age-old joke about stoners having ‘deep conversations about meaningless subjects,’ but this actually speaks to something intrinsic to Cannabis’ effects on the human body, emotions and mind. That’s because alcohol and other drugs don’t necessarily cause one to introspect, to look inside, in the way that Cannabis does. BOBMARLEY B EFORE WE BEGIN, we must acknowledge that much of Marley’s image and religious philosophy have been perverted. There’s the cliched scene of his posters hanging in the dorm rooms of college freshmen, a large joint in hand and smoke wafting through the air. His name has been exploited by opportunistic capitalists in countless ways, marketing products to make money off of his image. Not to mention, the famous ‘greatest hits’ album LEGEND is the butt of many a music snob’s jokes. Taking a look a little under the surface and we see that Marley was in many ways a once-in-a-lifetime phenomena - an artist who single handedly embodied a nation, a musical genre and a religion at the same time. More importantly for our purposes in this column, he helped to define a different cultural mindset around consuming Cannabis. In the West, because of the clandestine nature of consuming and producing Cannabis, our way of thinking about this simple herb has evolved to mirror the way we think about alcohol. One consumes for fun, personal pleasure, to get ‘messed up’ in an (often vain) attempt to avoid thinking about life.

JOSEPH C. ESCOBAR PANGAEA EXTRACTS WHAT YEAR WAS PANGAEA ESTABLISHED? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY?
oregonlEAF.COM
Pangaea Organics (Parent Company of Pangaea Extracts & SMOKE Oil) was originally established in 2014. I was exposed to Cannabis cultivation back in 2006 when a friend needed a caretaker to cultivate Cannabis for her. She had her OMMP card for a chronic illness. I immersed myself in Cannabis cultivation around 2008 when my significant other (at that time) got her OMMP card and we started to cultivate in a one-bedroom apartment. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO NAME YOUR COMPANY AFTER THE SUPERCONTINENT THAT BROKE APART SOME 200 MILLION YEARS AGO? In
college, a couple of my friends and I used to meet on Thursdays to share ideas. At that time, we decided that we’d build a street food cart with a global fusion style menu. We invested a bit of time into it but couldn’t make our minds up about the name. A friend chimed in with the name “Pangaea” and explained the concept to me. I immediately knew that was it. Unfortunately, none of us knew much about food [laughs]. I had already been cultivating Cannabis for about six years
JULY 2020
and one day, when we were all hanging out I said, ‘Well, we know nothing about food but I know about Cannabis cultivation.’ From then on, all of the food cart branding was used for the Cannabis business. IS PANGAEA SINGLE-SOURCE? WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SOURCING MATERIAL?
At the beginning of the venture, we also produced our own flower. Unfortunately, with recreational licensing (and the lift of the out-of-state investment moratorium) came lots of out-of-state money, overproduction and extreme market saturation. This led to the market crash of 2018-19. Us small-batch, organic producers could not compete with the large, outdoor, conventional producers. We had to stop producing flower and start focusing on processing. We’re in the middle of negotiations for an outdoor farm partnership so we can produce in-house flower and single-source extracts. This project should come to fruition Summer 2021. Currently, we source processing material from some of the best farms in Oregon like Orekron, Frontier Farms and Leap Farms (to mention a few). YOUR COMPANY WEBSITE LISTS MULTIPLE TYPES OF EXTRACTS. DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN ANY PARTICULAR PRODUCT OR HAVE A PERSONAL FAVORITE? We’ve been producing real ‘fresh frozen
live resin’ since 2016 or so and it’s my favorite. A lot has changed since then. ‘Live resin’ used to be the description of a product made from ‘fresh frozen’ material. Now, the term ‘live resin’ is thrown on any product with a light color appearance. ‘Zombie resin’
has definitely taken the backseat in the market. What most extraction companies do not disclose is that they use a blend of butane and propane. In most cases, it’s a 70% butane and 30% propane blend. Some of the advantages I saw in PHO from the beginning were efficiency in the extraction process and faster solvent recovery times. Propane’s (liquid state) temperature is -43.6 fahrenheit, which means that although the system runs at higher pressure, the extraction process is being done at very low temperatures, producing a ‘better’ product without the need for dry ice or chillers. Propane is a less aggressive solvent than butane and strips less undesirable matter. At the same time, it’s less efficient at extracting terpenes. Extraction technology has evolved at a fast pace in the last five to six years. With liquid CO2 cooling, mechanical filtering and media filtering I don’t see PHO becoming popular again. Butane is a much better fit for extraction now that the technology has evolved. IN LIGHT OF RECENT NATIONAL AND GLOBAL MOVEMENTS, HOW DO YOU THINK THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY (AND PRODUCERS LIKE YOURSELF) CAN ENCOURAGE AND FACILITATE DIVERSITY IN OUR INDUSTRY?
When it comes to diversity in the industry, I personally feel that it’s ingrained in the very core of Cannabis culture altogether. We used to be the kids your parents warned you about. We used to be the outcasts smoking ‘dope.’ We used to be drug dealers. I feel that before Cannabis became a big regulated business, enthusiasts were socially shamed and stereotyped. As an underground movement, we associated with likeminded people, regardless if they were black, white, yellow, pink, purple, green. Who cares! I’m foreign and grew up with people of different nationalities. In my heart, there is no difference. In my business everyone is welcome. Diversity makes the world rich and beautiful. Let education, dedication, motivation, determination and willingness to win speak louder than words.

“WHEN IT COMES TO DIVERSITY IN THE INDUSTRY, I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT IT’S INGRAINED IN THE VERY CORE OF CANNABIS CULTURE ALTOGETHER.” A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Look for the Stoner Owner stamp when purchasing fine Cannabis, and let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

I was offered the position of dispensary manager. I’m lucky to have landed a job with a company that is expanding quickly, and I think part of it was being in the right place at the right time, and part was having a strong work ethic. Oregon Euphorics is definitely unique. When you walk into our shop it doesn’t scream “Weed!” We have taken a different approach in hopes to make a wider variety of people feel welcomed. Recreational Cannabis has only been legal in Oregon for about five years, so I’ve found that many people from earlier generations or customers new to using Cannabis can get a bit overwhelmed/uncomfortable walking into a dispensary with a strong ‘stoner’ atmosphere. Also, we aren’t a superstore that carries every product on the market. We are a locally owned, neighborhood dispensary that puts a lot of effort into curating our selection with specialty, high quality products.
OREGON EUPHORICS is nestled in the beautiful and fairytale-like Westside of Bend. Tucked behind a small industrial development which includes a commercial brewery, two pubs, a barre studio and a music venue, Euphorics caters to a corner of town that expects the best of everything and they deliver accordingly. This at first glance thoughtfully decorated shop exceeds in quality in all areas, but upon further inspection their flower selection is what stands out the most, as their sister company Deschutes Growery has a reputation for excellence. With gifted staff like Tuesday Hanson - who manages this location as well as supports the grow - it’s no wonder this exciting company has such a loyal and loving customer base in Bend. JULY 2020

“ MAYBE ONE DAY, YEARS FROM NOW, THERE WILL BE A LITTLE RESTAURANT THAT HAS INFUSED RECIPES WITH SALSAS, TORTILLAS...EVERYTHING. EVENTUALLY, IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. SOMEONE IS GOING TO DO IT. WHY NOT ME?”
JULY 2020
Like many restaurant owners around the country, Baltimore’s Rosalyn Vera is doing the best she can to keep her business operating successfully during the coronavirus pandemic. But managing stress in these times can be quite difficult. For Rosalyn’s worries, the chronic has become the tonic.
W
hen times get really tough, like now, I think we can all get overwhelmed,” the New York native said. “But [medical Cannabis] has really helped me out.
I have an edible and take it easy. It keeps me calm and takes me to a better place.” Rosalyn, 43, co-owns the award-winning Cocina Luchadoras with her mother, Margarita Verdejo. Together, the pair opened the taqueria in 2018, quickly winning the hearts - and appetites - of those residing in or passing through Fells Point. While both mother and daughter spend time in the kitchen cooking recipes inspired by both family and employees, Rosalyn also oversees every facet of the operation. From managerial duties to social media marketing, and even playing the occasional role of cashier, she runs a 6-member team that she affectionately refers to as family. She credits their hard work and commitment in helping turn the startup into a thriving business that is entertaining the possibility of a second shop in Hampden. “We’re going to go through with it,” Rosalyn said. “But we just don’t know when. With all that’s going on, it’s gonna take some time.” For now, Rosalyn is content in remodeling the outdoors of Cocina Luchadoras to capture the ‘energy’ or Feng shui of the indoors. The decor of Luchadoras, which translates to female wrestlers or fighters, is covered with posters celebrating the strength of women and people of color. Mexican visitors can often be heard telling Rosalyn how her shop reminds them of home. “A lot of what you see is from my childhood,” she said. “This is what I grew up with and I really wanted to have the restaurant be a reflection of my personality.” Since indoor dining is currently prohibited at her establishment due to coronavirus safety laws, Rosalyn has begun expanding the exterior to allow her faithful customers to socially distance while enjoying a taco or three. The new design, she explains, derives its inspiration from the very same place as the interior: medical Cannabis. “I just become extra focused and more proactive,” Rosalyn said in regards to medicating. “That focus brings out the creativity and allows me to be able to take action.”
Rosalyn is adamant about using Cannabis responsibly, placing business and above all, motherhood, as her foremost priorities. Raising a 10-year-old daughter has also allowed Rosalyn to understand her mother’s indifference towards the plant. “She is not ‘oh-my-goodness’ pro-Cannabis,” said Rosalyn, explaining that due to Mexican laws, alcohol is more prevalent. “Everyone is allowed to think how they want. To me, it’s a very positive thing. It’s an amazing natural product the Earth has given us. And whatever comes from the Earth should be respected.” While they don’t often speak about Cannabis, Rosalyn has dreams of one day potentially expanding her growing artisanal brand to include Cannabis-infused dinners. “I’ve been doing research and there’s so many [recipes] out there!” she said. “Maybe one day, years from now, there will be a little restaurant that has infused recipes with salsas, tortillas... everything. Eventually, it’s going to happen. Someone is going to do it. Why not me?” Rosalyn is outspoken about her past struggles with anxiety, but her worries never stopped her from exhibiting a bold streak of fearlessness, earning her the moniker of ‘Best Badass’ from Baltimore Magazine in 2019. The nickname derived after a public incident of harassment that included multiple death threats from a person objecting to an anti-Trump political poster on display. Like the fighters that adorn the walls of her taqueria, Vera is tough and unapologetic about fighting for her loved ones. “It fills me with so much pride to see all that we have created,” she said, repeatedly attributing success to her staff. “We’re all trying to live a better life. We’re trying to live the life we want to live. Rosalyn credits her family, her team, her upbringing and lastly, Cannabis, for making the way towards a better life. “Not that I owe it [explicitly] to [Cannabis] - that’s more about who I am and what I’m capable of,” she said. “But with it, it allows me to be more creative, more focused and more successful. At least that’s how it works for me. I use it to be a better version of myself, so then I am able to live a good life. I’m very blessed to have found Cannabis.”

GROWN BY EVANS CREEK FARMS REVIEW by AMANDA DAY @TERPODACTYL_MEDIA PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN @BERMANPHOTOS

Southern Belle is a bodacious blend of Irene OG and Dosidos bred by Archive Seed Bank, and the folks at Evans Creek Farms are responsible for this all around stunner. Hunted in-house, this particular phenotype boasts a crisp contrast of colors, with flecks of bright purple throughout the deep green and black buds.
A
dense structure and thick coating of trichomes makes the nugs as satisfying to break down as they are to smoke. Crack one open and you’re greeted with a sweet, earthy scent that quickly fades into fine notes of funky fuel. You’ll want to find yourself a freshly cleaned bong to reap the rewards of this pleasantly complex profile. On the tongue, it’s a mix of sweet, piney, creamy and meaty flavors, with smoke that brings almost instantaneous salivation - not to be confused with ‘salvation’ - although it may bring that too. The big, bronchial punch and quick onset are probably best suited for somewhat experienced consumers, but the aftermath is enjoyable and relaxed. It offers a warm and fuzzy cerebral response and a tangible reminder of the tiny THC molecules hugging your head’s CB1 receptors. This strain leans on the laid-back side and if you let it, even enters into tunnel-vision territory. This humble reviewer enjoys big bowls of Southern Belle in the evenings, but its buds are tempting at any time of the day - especially if you have to melt some stress and pain away. @EVANS_CREEK_FARMS

Dabbing101 The Tools
Technique
RIG: pipe or water vessel for consuming your Cannabis concentrate or extract.
Choosing a dab setup will come down to personal preference, but water filtration will enhance almost any session. Be sure to thoroughly clean and rinse your rig frequently for the safest and smoothest smoke. ISO alcohol (or bong cleaner) and some warm water should do the trick!
BANGER: the quartz, cup-like device used to hold and heat your Cannabis concentrate or extract. CARB CAP: a lid-like device used to trap heat and move air around in your banger or nail. This provides a more regulated draw from each dab.
38
TERP PEARLS: tiny, quartz balls used in your banger when dabbing. These aren’t essential, but may enhance your experience by spreading around the warm extract. E-NAIL: an electronic device used to keep your nail or banger at a continuous temperature without the use of a torch. TORCH: used for heating up your nail or banger.
oregonlEAF.COM
TEMPERATURE GUN: used to monitor your nail or banger’s exact temperature and provide a personalized dabbing experience. DABBER: the tool to scoop and serve a dab with. COTTON SWABS: swabs (like Q-tips) are essential for cleaning your nail or banger after each dab.
Quality titanium, borosilicate glass or quartz tools are a must to avoid breakage and potential off-gassing when touching your warm nail surface. Similarly, it’s smart not to skimp too much when picking out your nail or banger. For an effective carb cap, make sure it covers the top of your nail or banger and includes a hole to pass air through. A heat source will be required to put all of these tools to work. If you’re just getting started, try looking into different types of creme brulee torches for an affordable option. Top of the line torches, heat wands and E-nails offer added customizations if you’re ready for the next step. Temperature is king when it comes to taking high quality dabs. THC is thought to vaporize at normal atmospheric pressure in the range 250-400º F. Terpenes will vaporize at a range of different temperatures, but are generally thought to have boiling points in the ballpark of THC. This dab devotee recommends starting out around 350º F. Temperatures as high as 550º can yield substantial vapor with minimal flavor loss, so just work your way up to a satisfactory experience based on flavor, vapor and overall effect.
Terminology FRESH FROZEN: material that has been flash-frozen fresh off of the plant to preserve the ‘live’ profile and/or potency. LIVE: a term used for products made with fresh frozen material and in reference to the plant’s potency and terpene profile while still living. FULL SPECTRUM: the ‘full’ range of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds present in a particular cultivar. FULL MELT: also referred to as ‘melt,’ this term is used for hash of the highest quality. The melting reference pertains to the product’s cleanliness and ability to ‘melt’ fully without leaving plant residue on the nail (see Six-Star). SIX-STAR (6*): a numerical hash rating system from one through six developed to determine quality. The system is based on how factors like cure, contaminant, water content and more affect the overall ‘melt,’ with six-star being the highest quality. CRC: an abbreviation for color remediation column (or cartridge) used in reference to an added process some producers employ to filter extracts of color and other compounds. HTFSE: an abbreviation for high terpene full spectrum extract.
Types of Extracts BHO: an abbreviation for butane hash oil, this type of extract is pulled from the plant using butane as a solvent. PHO: an abbreviation for propane hash oil, this less common type of extract is pulled from the plant using propane as a solvent. CO2: an abbreviation for carbon dioxide, this type of extract is pulled from the plant using supercritical CO2. DISTILLATE: a high-potency, essentially odorless extract that’s been stripped of plant compounds like terpenes and waxes through further refinement after original extraction. HASH: resin (mechanically) collected from the Cannabis plant. Hash can range from smokeable to dabbable, depending on quality and presence of plant matter in the final product. ROSIN: generally made from hash, rosin is the product of heat, pressure and a system of screens to filter waxes and plant matter. Rosin is the product of further hash refinement for a cleaner dab.

STORY by AMANDA DAY @TERPODACTYL_MEDIA
It’s no surprise, either, as new products emerge monthly featuring bright packaging and bold claims. If vaporgate and the flavored vape scare/ban has taught us anything, it’s that we should all be more conscious about what we inhale and allow inside our bodies. Many of us look to Cannabis to help medicinally and the last thing we want is for our harmless plant to become a negative input for a healthy life. Looking to take a deeper dive into the golden pool of concentrates? Study up on these more advanced topics to make sure your dabbing experience is safe, healthy and happy. Temperature is critical.
Think of dabs like Goldilocks with her porridge. She didn’t want to go too hot or too cold - but right in the middle. Taking a dab at the right temperature is important for both flavor and effect. Terpenes and cannabinoids break down at high temperatures, so too hot of dabs taste burnt and cause unwanted harshness and coughing. We recommend starting at a low temperature and slowly working your way up to a comfortable range for your dabbing setup. The perfect dab can be broken down based on desired effects. THC boils at 315 F, CBD at 356 F, and THCV (diamonds) at 428 F. Terpenes are combusted in all of these ranges. Low temperature dabbing is generally 350-450 degrees, with medium temp dabs running 450-600 degrees. The perfect zone depends on personal preference and type of concentrate, but we never recommend getting hotter than 600 degrees - that’s harsh! Advanced dabbers will use a laser thermometer to dial in their heat, but don’t feel like you have to get super scientific to get high. If it’s red hot, don’t do it! Wait until the temperature on a banger feels warm to the hand when held a few inches away, not hot. This is a good rule of thumb for taking a low temp dab. Remember: If it’s too cold, you can always reheat!
Don’t hold that hit!
Contrary to the old adage, you don’t have to cough to get off! It’s actually bad to hold dabs in and you definitely don’t get any higher. When taking a dab, the recommended inhalation time is one to five seconds. But an easy way to think of it is like taking a deep breath. Breathe in deeply and breathe out naturally, without an unnatural pause. The reason? The vapor released as concentrates expands and then quickly compresses after being heated and cooled, a process you don’t want to hold into your lungs. Holding your breath for longer than five seconds also deprives the body of oxygen - and you’ll be needing that oxygen to breathe through that big dab you just took!
When Cannabis is processed for concentrates it is being concentrated into a pure form. Think juice concentrate as a condensed version of a bigger jug of fresh juice. When concentrates are made, the end goal is to refine cannabinoids and terpenes for effect and flavor, but any residual pesticides or chemicals will be concentrated as well. We recommend only dabbing concentrates that have been pesticide tested in a laboratory. Most states require this, but some like Washington do not require pesticide testing. Never dab or consume concentrates from a black market or non-laboratory tested environment! Consuming chemicals, pesticides or solvents could definitely cause health complications.
Residual Solvents
If you are consuming a concentrate made with a hydrocarbon like butane or propane, be sure to check the parts per million (PPM) info on the packaging. We recommend consuming concentrates under 500ppm of residual solvents, although the best amount is less than 50ppm. While many regulations allow up to 5,000ppm of solvents in recreational concentrates, we know that rules don’t always protect consumers. Also, never dab homemade concentrates or oil that has not been tested! It’s not worth the risk of consuming solvents that have not been properly purged and lab tested.
Cartridges
Advanced dabbers will use a laser thermometer to dial in their heat, but don’t feel like you have to get super scientific to get high.
MANGO JELLY BY GREEN RUSH
From everyone who first heard about dabbing as a dance move, to the absolute stoniest of Cannabis consumers, there are endless questions about the world of concentrates.
Pesticide Testing
There are a couple basic rules to enjoy the best experience with a cartridge. First, ask the budtender if it is cut with any solvent or look on the packaging. We recommend avoiding anything cut with propylene glycol, especially for patients, because there are safer and healthier options available. Also, avoid anything with an artificial sounding flavor like blue raspberry or waffles. Look at the vape package to see if the flavor is naturally derived, and if so, go for it. While there are no rules currently governing flavors in e-cigarettes or Cannabis cartridges, we feel that strain specific and naturally processed options are the best! Vaporization can be one of the most desirable and pleasurable ways to consume Cannabis, especially when discretion counts. You should not vape indoors wherever it is specifically prohibited, such as on an airplane or bus. Feel free to use outdoors when your vapor will not bother others or be near children. Consumers will find a variety of battery options, from disposable types that have a non-rechargeable battery and last about 200 hits, to ones with USB charging capabilities and adjustable temperatures.

How Dabs Are Made As you exhale those tasty terpenes from your last dab or vape pen hit, do you ever wonder: How did some genius turn a green plant into a beautiful golden oil? The following is an attempt to explain this Cannabis complexity in the most basic terms possible.
jUly 2020
Step 1
The extract process refers to pulling the THCA, CBD and terpenes from the plant matter. This process typically uses a mix of butane and propane to break the trichomes - tiny little sacs that form on the leaves and buds that contain the THCA and terpenes - from the plant. This is done by basically freezing the plant and snapping off the trichomes. Butane and propane drop below freezing when exposed to air facilitating this process. The Cannabis is frozen and then poured into large sacks that fit into long extraction chambers.
Step 3
When completed, processors end up with a large pyrex pan filled with several hundred grams of concentrates. From here the product can go in two directions...
These large chambers are carefully bolted into an extraction machine that will allow the gas to travel through the Cannabis, removing the trichomes, fats and lipids.
If it is high quality and desirable to be dabbed, it heads for packaging where a jar is placed on a scale and a weighing technician carefully weighs out one gram, seals it up, and packages for sale on your local rack. At Dabstract the scale was hitting 1.2 grams on every jar! If it is not of high quality, the oil will be further purified using distillation. This process involves running the oil over a heated glass cylinder. At different temperatures, certain compounds are able to be removed including THCA. However, when exposed to the heat of glass walls, the THCA is converted to THC and all the terpenes dissipate. The oil is run through this process several times until the desirable level of clarity is achieved.
Step 2
After the gas has traveled through the Cannabis long enough to extract the majority of the THCA and terpenes, crude oil is expelled. This crude oil needs to be winterized, which is done by combining the crude oil with liquid ethanol, and then frozen or run through a roto-Vape, a device that winterizes at a faster rate. The freezing process separates the fats and lipids from the THCA and terpenes. After winterization is complete the final process begins, called purging. The oil is placed into vacuum ovens that heat at very even rates throughout and purge the extraction gas from the final oil. This process takes several days and will result in a dabable product containing less than 500 parts per million of residual solvent, or in many cases, zero parts.
This final product can be used in the production of edibles as well as vape pens. At Dabstract they use HTE, High Terpene Extract, which is strain specific and blended with the THC to make pure Cannabis vape cartridges and pods. The blended liquid is heated a little so it is more viscous, using calibrated machines and injected into the cartridge for your vaping pleasure. MULE EXTRACTS RIPPED CITY CRANBERRY WHITE-GRAPE FULL SPECTRUM CANNABIS GUMMY JULY 2020
“Take The High Road” is the Mule Extracts motto and we definitely learned why after trying one of their 50mg cranberry white-grape full spectrum gummies. Coined “Ripped City” as an ode to the perseverance and camaraderie found in the beloved city of Portland that means so much to this local family owned company, stoke levels were high for this strain specific sweet treat. This particular selection contained a 50/50 hybrid known as Gawd Dawg - bred by Gage Green and grown by Potent Farms. One special note about Gawd Dawg is that it is known to smell and taste like freshly picked grapes!
Those who consume gummies regularly tend to get excited about creative new flavors and Mule delivers in this department with class and elegance. They designed the tart cranberry and sweet grape flavors to pair perfectly with the naturally occurring terpene profile of their Gawd Dawg-derived full spectrum extract. The taste of Cannabis is readily present, but in a wholly appropriate and non-intrusive way. Many play a game of masking flavors instead of complementing them - but not Mule. When done properly, the right combination of terps and natural fruit flavor will bring your taste buds on a serious joyride. Before I knew what happened, a full 50mg gummy had disappeared in a burst of explosive bittersweetness and satisfying chewy texture. Whether you like to nibble off small pieces at a time by utilizing the 5mg pre-cut squares, or pop the whole thing at once, the girth of this gummy allows you to savor the rich, firm, yet soft texture all the way through each bite. The white grape delivers an expansive wholesome aftertaste as the initial bitterness of the cranberry wears off. All the while a warming taste of terps softly lingers in the background - sending a friendly message to your brain to prepare itself for a pleasant sensation. I sat and contemplated while the high began elevating after 20 minutes. Before long I felt like I had just ripped back-to-back dabs of some fire live resin. The high was intense and focused, followed by a buzzy and euphoric numbness of my extremities. I actually wish I had utilized the perforated edges and saved some for later! I say that because 50mg felt like 80mg, which was a bit unexpected, but welcomed with open arms. The secret behind Mule lies in their low temp, low pressure, manually extracted artisanal CO2 oil. Using a massive state-ofthe-art grinder allows them to regulate the size of material down to the micron level, while keeping the flower cold. Avoiding heat helps retain the natural plant oils and terpenes. Also incorporating an extensive winterization process, Mule’s variable extraction technology uses a combination of 15 different filtration techniques that preserve a full bodied and accurate flavor profile, without compromising the end product. Mule states that this is the stage of the process where others have been known to add artificial flavors and additives to the plant something they proudly stand against. Their unique and intensive method explains why the potency of this gummy stands above average. Each one is substantial in size, probably about 3.5x the volume of an average single serving gummy. Retrospectively, we became even more impressed with the price and value. At $6.00 apiece and containing 10, 5mg pre-cut servings, Mule Extracts offers an affordable and hard-hitting candy with a high potential of improving your day. @TAKE_THEHIGHROAD

by Mike Ricker THE SHITUATION Remember that dude on Jersey Shore who called himself The Situation? Well, this has absolutely nothing to do with him. So, now that we have gotten that out of the way, let us pontificate. As kids, it is safe to say that for most of us the proverb ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ was stuffed into our mushy little brains as much as the Cookie Monster stuffed Oreos into his stoned mouth. In fact, cookies is now as much of an imperative word in the Cannabis vernacular as wedding cake, which makes a lot of sense. Weed gives you the munchies. And the word munchies is synonymous with cookies and cake. Man, I’ve gotta get a handle on my life. I am getting way off the subject. That mushy brain has become quarantinged. Anyway, people are broke. They are lonely and depressed. There will be no festivals to attend, no sporting events, no nightclubs. And who in the hell would have ever predicted a juggernaut in wearable masks and hand sanitizer as positions suggested by your portfolio manager? These are the least sexy stocks on the market, but there is nothing sexy about a pandemic, so it makes a lot of sense. Is anyone having sex? Anyway, if you ask me, I think what may have gotten us in this mess is the fact that we are wasteful. Yes, we all love the convenience of pushing a button on your hand-held pocket partner and having products magically appear at your doorstep a day later, but we seem to have lost sight of where the waste ends up. It is awfully nice to pull the toilet handle and watch everything vanish into oblivion or toss your recycling into a bin and bid a fond farewell, but this ecosystem can only handle so much of our shit. Have they opened the beaches yet? At this point, I would take the Jersey Shore.
