INTERNATIONAL CANNABIS BUSINESS CONFERENCE Photo by Carl Kiilsgaard for Oregon Leaf

H

Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer speaks during the conference about the need for reform.

undreds of investors, business owners and activists gathered at the International Cannabis Business Conference last month in Portland. Dozens of quality speakers spoked across several different panels, covering everything from potential legalization in Oregon to the impacts of “Wild West” Cannabis systems in place now in Washington, California and Colorado. “The International Cannabis Business Conference was one of the most cohesive, conscientious and professional conferences I’ve attended and I’ve been to hundreds,” wrote Ladybud Publisher Diane Fornbacher. “The ICBC team really tried to find qualified and responsible names in the industry and hosted it at the beautiful Oregon Convention Center at a time when the state is pushing for the legalization of Cannabis.” Prominent speakers included Congressman Blumenauer, who has sponsored legislation titled “The Small Business Tax Equity Act,” which would create an exemption for predatory tax code 280e that cripples Cannabis related businesses. Blumenauer promised to provide citizens “the latest information regarding the important work being done in Congress to ensure that state-regulated Cnnabis businesses can operate the same as any other business,” reported Russ Belville, a radio host, formerly of NORML. Anthony Johnson, the executive director of the Oregon Cannabis Industry Association and director of New Approach Oregon, presented and gave his pitch to vote for Referendum 91 in November in just a few weeks.

editor’s note

OCTOBER 2014

Thank you for checking out the 4 th issue of oregon leaf! Oregon’s Cannabis industry comes together for competition, and convention ctober is one of my favorite months and not just because of Halloween! It is the beginning of the harvest season, when the West Coast will see thousands of pounds of outdoor Cannabis coming in from the elements. I want to remind everyone to be safe this season, and to follow state laws. More importantly, buy local! There is a ton of great medicine produced in Oregon. Don’t let out-of-state scofflaws jeopardize the quality medical system we have in place. As for the new issue, I am excited to drop our first illustrated cover featuring the spooky dab art of David Thesenvitz, aka Deemon. David is something of a renowned dab connoisseur, and has served the Pacific Northwest with awesome art and a positive message for patients for the last several years. Check out more of his art at by searching for Deemon on Facebook where he has a gallery. This month’s issue also features coverage

of two local Cannabis events, a review of an access point in Salem, and several new medibles to try. Our strain of the month is a spectacular 12-to-1 ratio CBD-to-THC cut of ACDC, which tastes better than a homemade lemon pie. We also explore urban floating via sensory deprivation, a new Growtech and Behind The Strain from Dr. Scanderson, and a fresh look on Health and Science with Dr. Rose. You can also catch up on national news with Steve Elliott, and try out some of our new fall-themed recipes as you enjoy the month. This issue is full of more great stories than I can even mention, so I suggest you get to reading and enjoy this new edition. As always, thanks for reading Oregon Leaf and supporting the truth about Cannabis!

Drug War

Bill would stop militarizing of country’s cops No more tanks, no more grenades, drones...

U.S.

Representatives Hank Johnson (D-Georgia) and Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) introduced legislation Sept. 16 to change the Pentagon program that transfers military equipment to law enforcement. The program has come under increased scrutiny from lawmakers after images from Ferguson, Missouri, showed law enforcement dressed like combat soldiers, using military equipment to deal with protesters. The Pentagon program has its roots in the Drug War, coming to fruition in the early 1990s as the U.S. government militarized its approach to drug policy. In September, senators had a hearing on the issue of militarization in our law enforcement, where they were critical of the Pentagon program. Johnson and Labrador’s bill, the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act, has received support from Democratic and GOP legislators. “In light of what we all saw in Ferguson, Missouri, the American people are clamoring for law enforcement to become less militarized,” said Michael Collins, policy manager at the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs. “Grenades, drones and tanks may belong on the battlefield; they....don’t have a place on U.S. streets. “Such militarization is inextricably linked to the Drug War, where SWAT teams and no-knock raids have become a routine part of drug arrests, even in the case of nonviolent offenders,” Collins said. “Very occasionally and with proper oversight and training, the use of some military equipment is appropriate — school shootings, terrorist situations and the like,” said Major Neill Franklin, executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. “But when it’s routinely used against nonviolent drug offenders, it only serves to further strain police-community relations so vital to preventing and solving violent crime. “This bill will correct some of the worst excesses of a potentially useful program hijacked by the war on drugs,” said Franklin, a retired police officer.

ortland Compassionate Caregivers paid $6,500 in fines for evidence of 13 “serious” violations, including poor record keeping and evidence on-site Cannabis consumption, according to authorities. After a series of stern warnings to numerous dispensaries earlier in September, the Oregon Health Authority began charging medical marijuana dispensaries for violating the rules. The shop was the first to be cited for violations during an unannounced, mandatory annual onsite inspection. OHA’s regulations to enforce the state’s 2013 medical marijuana dispensary law require an onsite inspection of each facility within six months of receiving a license, and annually thereafter. The state subsequently ordered Portland Compassionate Caregivers to close, The Oregonian’s Noelle Crombie reported last month. “This penalty sends a message in no uncertain terms — you must comply with Oregon law or you will pay the price,” said Tom Burns, director of Oregon Health Authority Pharmacy Programs.

undreds of people filtered in and out of the professional event, getting a firsthand look at many of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program community’s top extractors, dispensaries, products and business owners. The convention, free to the public with a suggested donation of one can of food, filled half of Hall E at the Portland Expo Center last month. The event raised more than two and a half tons in food donations for the Oregon Food Bank, a figure that Event Director Jerry Norton said he hopes and expects to more than double at next year’s event. “An event like this is important because it allows the community to come together and exchange ideas,” Erin Wallace of Sirius Extracts said. Clima Grow, Mt. Hood Wellness, Divine Kind and High Quality Compassion were a few of the vendor booths present at the convention. One booth that drew a lot of attention during the weekend was the Stoney Girl Garden’s booth. Stoney Girl was offering seeds of its genetics, which are specially bred for RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) production. Attendees were eager to learn more about the medicinal benefits of RSO and the terminally ill cancer patients it has helped in well-documented cases. A few steps away, the Divine Kind and Dab Society Extracts booths drew a crowd. Dab Society Extracts was educating attendees on its safe and clean BHO (butane hash oil) extraction methods. Many people noted that they were intrigued to learn how a compliant extractor operates their business. Having a medical Cannabis event that is open to the public is a crucial step towards ending prohibition. “It is important we let the community and state take a look at medical marijuana before November,” attendee Nikolai Alfieri said. Ultimately, the Oregon Cannabis Convention was nothing short of a reflection of the compassion and care evident in the Cannabis community.

Questions for the marketer Alexa Divett

on how pot businesses can stay ahead & build a brand By WES ABNEY | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN

#1 When did you start Canna Marketing Design, and what made you want to serve this industry? We officially launched in January, but in reality we had started months before in October 2013 when I went up to the Marijuana Business Daily conference in Washington at Emerald Downs. It became really clear to me then that rebranding my other marketing biz for this industry was the way to go. Cannabis is a niche a lot of us have been working for/in for a long time, so to blend careers was a neat thing. In December, my biz partner, Jessica Pierron, and I came together and have been working hard ever since. She is the creative director and creative force behind this whole thing. I can’t draw a circle; she comes up with all the beautiful logos and designs.

#2 are you an oregon mmj patient? I’m a medical card holder since 2008, but I’ve been an advocate for this my entire adult life. I also have a caregiver card so I have some patients I take care of. I grow and produce for them. It’s a very important relationship to not

‘‘

WHO DO YOU WANT TO TARGET? DO YOU WANT 10-DOLLAR EIGHTHS OR OFFER CONNOISSEUR-GRADE MEDS TO A HIGHER-END DEMOGRAPHIC? BOTH CAN BE SUCCESSFUL, BUT IF YOUR MESSAGING IS FOR A BUSINESS MAN AND THE SHOP ATMOSPHERE IS FOR A COLLEGE KID, THAT’S DIFFERENT MESSAGING AND TARGETING AND IT WON’T WORK.

just use the medicine but provide the medicine for people who are really, really sick. That’s important to 99 percent of people who have been in this industry so far! It’s all about patient advocacy. We wouldn’t even have this opportunity if we didn’t have this amazing medical program.

#6 Is the Cannabis market becoming more mature?

There were no dispensaries that I knew of in ’08. The very first one I worked with was Pure Green when we did its grand opening PR campaign in January. There are an estimated 60K registered growers in Oregon alone, and most of them are providing for a network of patients like I do. As for the new dispensaries, I think some of them are doing an amazing job. There are some really, really smart business people tuning some really stellar dispensaries. They have marketing plans and marketing budgets, have highly qualified, well-trained staff, beautiful spaces that are friendly and inviting. And then there are some just winging it. Living in the old mentality of a dark and dingy head shop. The state just shut down nine out-of- compliance dispensaries. They are serious about the laws and reward those following the rules. If we want this to work, we need to follow the rules.

If you want to be taken seriously by people new to MMJ or recreational Cannabis, you need to present as a serious legit business who has a business plan and who understands rules of business the way things work in the real world. Some of the target demographics for dispensaries are people who have never smoked before. For our clients we want to know who you want to target, do you want $10 eighths or offer connoisseur grade meds to a higher end demographic? Both can all be successful, but if your messaging is for a businessman and your shop atmosphere is for a college kid, that’s different messaging and targeting and it won’t work. What about an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s, or a baby boomer diagnosed with cancer, or someone who didn’t smoke and doesn’t want to but knows it can help a child’s seizures? If they see a business as young hooligans, they won’t trust it and they won’t bring business to you. You have to run a professional business, and have budtenders who are kind and compassionate and know what they are doing to help patients. Competition is going to get more and more fierce, so people have to set it apart not just with branding but with experience in the store.

#4 How do dispensaries stay competitive and reach new people?

#7 Are there any approaches you advise people to avoid?

In terms of presenting themselves, like I said some are doing an amazing job. They have figured out their unique selling proposition. They’ve thought through what makes them different than the 200 other dispensaries in Portland, and how they can attract a loyal customer base. Here’s the deal though ... this is Oregon, and you can’t bank on being unique by only having the best product. Almost everyone has the best product and if you don’t offer more than that you won’t succeed. I know that the competition is getting really fierce in Portland, with so many dispensaries now. So dispensaries need to figure out who they want to attract and how they are going to get them into their store.

I think that moving away from sexually driven advertising, the ’90s BC culture will do wonders for the industry … women have a lot of purchasing power and we are a strong voice in the community. I would also encourage owners to move away from the Cheech and Chong mentality. I think that if Measure 91 passes and medical stays intact … there’s definitely room for a lighthearted tone for rec shops, but a serious tone for medical shops. I think to be taken seriously on a national stage, moving away from sexualized images and a stoner mentality will do wonders for the industry.

#5 hOW DOES THE MARKETING CAMPAIGN GO? wHERE DO YOU START OFF?

#8 What is the future for your firm?

For us, the first conversation is to discuss the unique selling proposition for the company, identify the audience, develop a company voice, and then we build a logo and brand identity package out of that conversation. For example, the green cross is about to be played out. So how can a dispensary or grower use their brand identity to set themselves apart and communicate their message? We start with that dialogue and work from there. So we really want to encourage our existing clients to consider who they are targeting, and for new businesses to consider what will set them apart, especially for growers. Sour Diesel is Sour Diesel, for example, and as long as they know how to grow it, they’ll have an amazing product. But so does the competition. When it comes to branding a farm or farmer, I ask our clients to tap into their network — who is in a sphere of influence who is different, what makes you happy, what makes you passionate, and can we build a brand out of that. Can we build a business that you want to run for the foreseeable future, that you are excited to go to work every day? That’s the goal.

Our biggest goal is to build our company into a national brand. That for us looks like being an advocate for Cannabis business owners and providing a true agency experience. That’s one goal, really where Jessica’s agency experience comes in. For me, a long-term goal is to take this message to a national level, to do our own PR and marketing, and to speak at national events, both in-industry and out, around the country and the world. I would like to in the near future take my Internet marketing experience and create digital information products like e-books and video trainings. This is an industry that doesn’t even know how powerful it is yet. I also want to encourage people on the fence about the industry to get in now, especially if you have means and passion. This is a huge opportunity for us! We are the ones with experience. We need to have our voices heard, because I can’t guarantee that Monsanto and other big corporations won’t come in and try to take over in the next 10 years.

#3 When did you first go to a dispensary and what do you think of the ones that have opened up recently?

DAVID THESENVITZ HIS UNIQUE STYLE OF PAINTINGS are inspired by CANNABIS CULTURE, our LOCAL TEAMS, THE northwest and a bit of THE ANIMAL KINGDOM. Story by Wes Abney | Photo by Daniel Berman

MY PROCESS STARTS WITH A BLANK CANVAS LOTS OF BRIGHT COLORS AND GOOD MEDICINE. I LOVE IT. BEING ABLE TO INSPIRE AND SHARE ART MAKES EVERYONE’S DAY BETTER.

F

ather, artist and industry representative David Thesenvitz, 28, has chosen to follow his passions into a world of canvas, colors and dabs. Thesenvitz, aka Deemon, began working in the industry several years ago as a budtender at Seattle Cross. Today, he is selfemployed and thriving, sitting on the periphery of an industry that is developing a new culture. But his passions with Cannabis and art began long before, and the desire to create has been his calling. “I remember sitting in class at Washington State University and being unable to control the doodling,” he said, illustrating his whimsical confidence in his path. “By the end of class, I would have a full page drawing, usually about Seattle or about Cannabis.” Deemon’s connection with the city’s culture, and the plant that has come to identify it, is a continuous presence in his art. “I am a true Seattleite, born in Top Hat, growing up on the Mariners and the Hawks, the Sonics when we had them. I have taken Seattle sports everywhere, down to my tattoos,” he explained. “I love having Space Needles hidden in my art. This is a new Seattle culture blending with Cannabis culture and we are at the forefront of it.”

As a patient for four years, Deemon uses the medicine to combat intestinal problems that leave him with nausea and daily pain. “When I realized I can use Cannabis to help five different conditions instead of taking lots of pharmaceutical pills, it opened my eyes,” he said. “It’s not about the social stigma of pot -you have to be happy for yourself. If I am not medicated, my nausea shows up daily.” In a quest to improve his health, Deemon discovered Cannabis concentrates, though initially they were too heavy a dose. As he adjusted to the more potent form of medicine, he said he found new strength and less dependence on smoking constantly. A large dose of concentrates relieves his symptoms for up to four hours, and lets him focus on art without pain or the hassle of constantly smoking, he said. “My process starts with a blank canvas and lots of bright colors, and the addition of good medicine. I love it. Being able to inspire and share art makes everyone’s day better.” In addition to the freedom of being an artist, Deemon is also supporting his growing family with the art. He had left the industry for a time,

but didn’t know where his aspirations would fit in. His is a perfect example of the ancillary job opportunities coming to the Cannabis world, where a good idea and hard work can transform anybody’s life. “When you leave the industry after three years, you miss the patients a lot,” Deemon said. “And being home with my son watching recreational Cannabis news makes me miss it even more, because it is in the news for the wrong reasons. If you know me, and you know my art, it is for the medicinal stance of the plant. This was a movement before it went mainstream, and art has been an outlet.” In a city known for the creation of grunge music and renegade artists, Deemon has worked into a new niche: Cannabis art. “It’s one of the biggest achievements of my life. People say you can’t make a living making art, even though it isn’t about the money. It’s about people enjoying and feeling your art, and growing one blank canvas at a time.”

STRAIN OF THE MONTH By WES ABNEY | PHOTO by DANIEL BERMAN

We all know that Moms worldwide

recommend saving dessert for after dinner, but we would urge you to enjoy this lemon meringuescented strain as soon as possible! In the world of high-CBD strains, many are known for a signature poor taste and smell, but not this sugary cut of ACDC. Snapping a fluffy and crystally nug emits heavy and vibrant lemon notes that got our stomach talking back. The cure and form of this bud are lovely, especially for rolling into joints, which we did promptly after getting this sample from Farma PDX. Rolled up with organic OCB papers like we used, or enjoyed through a bong or pipe, the sweet taste comes with a relaxing smoke that is mellow and easy on the lungs. The 12-1 ratio of CBD to THC makes this strain low in psychoactivity, but perfect for a multitude of symptoms ranging from anxiety to inflammation and pain. CBD, or Cannabidiol, has been found beneficial for seizures, epilepsy, MS and other neurological disorders, putting this flower off the charts on medicinal properties. Conversely, it is also a great choice for someone who wants to relax without an overwhelming or distracting “high. The ACDC is a Sativa-dominant phenotype of the Cannatonic strain, and is equally great at any time of day. Check it out at Farma, and ease into a pain and worry-free flower that will satisfy your medicinal needs, and your sweet tooth.

CANNA APPLE, PEAR AND WALNUT SALAD Being a right coast transplant, I am delighted by the variety and quality of fruit here in the paradise that is the Pacific Northwest. I taste every variety I can until I think I will never eat another apple or pear again. I bake lots of apple and pear tarts and even more crisps and crumbles. I bake them, grill them, sauté them and totally enjoy them. Pick up a jar of the local Bliss Peanut Butter, and eat it with an apple or pear slice. So yummy. I have made all of these recipes with the strain NYC Haze, a potent, sativa-dominant beauty of a strain. It’s very strong and tasty and the high is quite intense in a wonderful way.

1. In a small bowl, combine Canna-oil, vinegar, mustard, shallot, salt and pepper. Set aside. 2. In a large serving bowl, combine all of the remaining ingredients. 3. Toss salad w/ dressing & serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup Canna-olive oil 1/4 cup sherry vinegar 1 small shallot, minced Fresh ground black pepper & salt 1 tsp. whole-grain Dijon mustard 1 head kale, baby, torn or chopped 1 ripe pear, cored and thinly sliced 1 apple, cored and thinly sliced

This is an amazing combination of tastes and textures. If blue cheese is not your thing, try goat cheese or feta.If you intend to make the salad in advance, you will need to toss the apples and pears with some lemon juice to prevent browning. Serves 4-6.

CANNA BAKED APPLES Baked apples are one of our favorites. I don’t like the apples to get too soft, but if you do, leave them in 8-10 more minutes than the recipe suggests... 1. Heat oven to 340 degrees.

SAUTÉED CANNA PEARS AND CANNA APPLES W/ ICE CREAM I seem to remember that last year one of our local ice cream shops offered about five apple-infused ice creams. You could go with one of those — or just skip the boring line and do it yourself.

2. Place the apples on a baking sheet with sides. 3. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, pecans and cinnamon. Mix together to distribute evenly. 4. Place a chunk of Canna-butter in each apple cavity. 5. Drizzle with the heavy cream and bake for about 30 minutes. Before serving, drizzle with a bit more cream, as desired.

1. In a large skillet, melt the Canna-butter. Add apple and pear slices and cook over low/med. heat, stir occasionally, about 3-5 minutes. 2. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and cranberries, reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly caramelized, about 10 minutes longer. 3. Divide among serving bowls and top with the ice cream.

INGREDIENTS 2-4 Tbs. Canna-butter, softened 4 apples, cored almost to the bottom 2 Tbs. brown sugar 8 Tbs. pecans, chopped ½ tsp. cinnamon 4 Tbs. heavy cream, extra for drizzle before serving (optional)

INGREDIENTS

2-3 Tbs. unsalted Canna-butter 2 apples, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick 2 pears, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick 4 Tbs. light brown sugar 4 tablespoons cranberries, fresh or frozen 4-6 scoops vanilla, or other, ice cream ½ tsp. cinnamon

BY OREGON LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR SCOTT D. ROSE

BY NORTHWEST LEAF SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR SCOTT D. ROSE

DESCRIPTION Commonly known as true chamomile, German chamomile, wild chamomile.

Parts used:

The flowering tops; the aromatic flowers of the German chamomile have a very bitter taste.

Active constituents:

The flowering tops contain a volatile oil, a bitter extractive and little tannic acid. The flowering tops can be steamed and a blue oil extracted containing ingredients that reduce swelling and may stop the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

(Matricaria Recutita) is spread over Europe, North Africa and the temperate region of Asia. PHOTO BY CREATIVE COMMONS

Drug interactions:

Historical uses:

To treat nervous conditions, insomnia, gut issues. Processed into teas, liquid extracts (tinctures), capsules, tablets, topical applications and mouth rinse.

There is a theoretical risk for it to increase the potency or effect of other drugs, since chamomile contains coumarin, a naturally occurring blood thinner. May make effects of sedative drugs such as alcohol stronger, or interfere with blood pressure and diabetes medications. May reduce effectiveness of contraceptives with prolonged use.

Side effects & toxicity:

Dosage:

Shouldn’t be used within 2 weeks before or after surgery due to blood thinning properties.

Medicinal uses:

Shouldn’t be taken during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. May cause drowsiness, so don’t take it and drive. Reports of allergic reactions in people who have eaten or come into contact with chamomile products or who have allergy to Asteraceae family or plants in the daisy family, including ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies. solation tanks are relative newcomers in the field of health treatment, but the idea of floating in a high concentration of saltwater for medicinal uses dates back thousands of years. The practice of floating in a high-saline water solution has undergone little research, but many users of salt baths say the benefits are plentiful. Coupled with sensory deprivation while inside the isolation tank, patients might begin to see improvements as quickly as in their first one-hour session. Neurophysiologist John C. Lilly created the first isolation tank in 1954 while researching the effects of sensory deprivation on consciousness at the National Institute of Mental Health. The original tanks were designed to submerge the patient in a freshwater tank with headgear for breathing, though that method didn’t create a fully relaxed state because of the hissing of bubbles and the uncomfortable swimwear and mask. After some revisions to Lilly’s design, contemporary isolation tanks allow users to be suspended in a shallow saltwater bath in a more comfortable position. With more than 800 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved in the tank’s water, patients are suspended in the solution, floating naked with their face just above the surface of the water. Sound and light are removed from the tank to aid in achieving a relaxed state faster, while the temperature of the water is heated to nearly the same temperature as the user’s body to reduce the amount of sensations on the skin and increase the sensation of floating. Ear plugs are worn to further reduce sounds inside the chamber. The water is filtered and the tanks are

sterilized before each use. Users must shower before entering the tank, and showers are provided in each isolation tank’s room; a shower is recommended after the float to clean off salt in the hair, ears or any residual salts left on the skin. Patients with neurological disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, back, neck and body pain, arthritis, insomnia, poor blood circulation and skin allergies might find that a one-hour session each week can reduce symptoms. Coupled with other therapies such as yoga and massage, patients can achieve a healthier lifestyle without relying on pharmaceuticals or using marijuana all day long. Another benefit of using the isolation tanks is that floating in a high concentration of saltwater allows skin to absorb magnesium. Patients who are claustrophobic and nyctophobic (fear of darkness) should avoid this treatment or look into an open room or a larger isolation booth -- the tank might create anxiety because of its coffin-like feeling. Some tanks do have interior lighting, but this takes away from the effect of light deprivation. Also, patients with open wounds or extremely sensitive skin should avoid the tanks. Other possible benefits of floating in isolation tanks include an increase in clarity, increase in blood circulation, improvement in creativity, relief from insomnia and an overall feeling of relaxation and wellness. The cost of floating is comparable to that of a good one-hour massage. As always, consult your physician if you have any concerns about using an isolation tank. The greater Seattle area has three locations with isolation tanks.

rounded, in electrical terms, refers to creating a direct physical connection to the earth. Humans have sat, stood, walked and slept on the ground for eons, and that connection has acted as a conduit for the earth’s energy to enter the body. Humans are bioelectric beings living on an electric planet. This concept of energy transfer is known as earthing, which is a modern discovery of a timeless practice. Earthing is not without opponents, but science supports this energy transfer and its subsequent health benefits. Alternative and traditional medicines talk about “energy,” such as Chinese medicine’s concept of qi (chi) and the manipulation of the body’s energy through the energy pathways called meridians. A variety of words have been used to describe the body’s energy or energies, including the “vital force,” “aura,” “vibrations,” “strength” and “prana.” But what is this fundamental “energy?” James Oschman, who has a bachelor’s degree in biophysics and a doctorate in biology, is an expert

Experiments have shown that free electrons from the earth cause decreased inflammation, beneficial changes in heart rate, reduction in pain, promotion of healthful sleep patterns and thinning of the blood. Thinning of the blood makes it less viscous, which has beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease. One study even suggested that earthing eliminates the potentially harmful effects of the electromagnetic fields given off by all the electronic devices around us.

So

how do you start earthing? Contact the earth with your skin! It can be for just 10 to 15 minutes. Some believe contact with any part of the body is beneficial, but the effects of using your feet seem to be more pronounced. This ties in with Chinese medicine — the kidney meridian originates on the soles of the feet at the ball on each side. An acupuncture point commonly used in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia and to affect the source of qi can also be found in that area. Touching grass, sand, rock, dirt or soil works, but concrete works, too, because of its porous nature. Asphalt doesn’t work because its surface is sealed from the earth. Ideal locations for earthing are on the beach, close to or in the water and on dewy grass. Moisture facilitates the flow of electrons. Earthing has no negative side effects, it cannot be overdone and can be practiced almost anywhere. Several companies are striving to put you in contact with the earth. Blankets, sheets, sitting pads and foot rests are among products that claim to aid electron transfer without direct contact with the earth. These devices have a wire embedded or sewn inside the product that contacts the skin, and the other end of the wire is either staked into the ground or plugged into the middle round hole of a grounded wall outlet. Also available are shoes with copper wires through the soles. These devices are useful in settings such as harsh weather conditions and urban environments, and for people who are incapacitated. Many of these devices have been tested and seem to be valid. But nothing beats direct skin contact with earth. Science has measured the transference of electrons from the earth to the body. The positive effects of earthing on decreasing inflammation might suggest that the lack of grounding in our industrialized world is tied to the rise of some modern diseases. As a society, we have become detached from the earth, and our planet’s only known function is to support life.

Experiments have shown that free electrons from the earth cause decreased inflammation, beneficial changes in heart rate, pain reduction, promotion of healthful sleep patterns and thinning of the blood. Thinning of the blood makes it less viscous, which has beneficial effects in treating cardiovascular disease. Use your hands and feet to touch grass, sand, rock, dirt or soil, even concrete works. Ideal locations for earthing are on the beach, close to or in the water and on dewy grass. Moisture facilitates the flow of electrons. People who practice earthing swear by it. Proper nutrition and growing conditions must exist in veg and at the first stage of flower for any of these techniques to be maximized. I don’t recommend trying anything radical until that has been achieved.

Sometimes the best results come from taking things out earlier and flushing longer.

I have seen nothing that you can do at the end of your cycle that will affect change dramatically. Nature provides a gradual process. Work inside that rather than against it.

Always use any stress treatments cautiously and gradually; it’s very easy to overdo it and end up with the opposite outcome of your intention.

jedi kush

BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT Large raised trichomes ascend from bright green calyxes.

They’re white, large and plentiful, and yes, we’re talking about the resin heads. Medium density nuggets maintain a certain sponginess that makes preparing the medication for smoking simple. Looking like a heavy yielding SFV OG Kush, one expects an explosion of fuel and pine cleaner when opening the bag, but that would be wrong. The Jedi Kush brings completely unique, spicy, hashy, earthy scents of nutmeg and cardamom that explode from the bag like opening a spice cabinet, before giving way to a soft, sweet lemon cream pie smelling finish. Sweet, spicy citrus flavors grab attention on the first inhale leading to several successive “sips” on the pipe, generously filling my lungs & satisfying my curiosity. Lung expanding Jedi is so well known for its flavors it reminds me of the key lime pie someone named Fran is serving right now at a country diner.

HOW IT GROWS Jedi Kush’s strong East Coast Sour D influence is immediately

Jedi Kush is the host of an infomercial for your mind and you can’t shut it off! A creeper strain without any of the lethargy or fatigue... LINEAGE

Swerve is at it again taking only the most sought after Chem-influenced genetics and capturing them in seed form. Created by Team Death Star out of the midwest in the early ‘00, the strain made its way to the East Coast and gained massive popularity by 2005, but found further recognition in 2010 with a cover story in High Times. Cali Connection Seeds and head breeder Swerve were the first to release genetics by obtaining cuttings and crossing it to the famed San Fernando Valley OG Kush.

GENETICS

noticeable in veg when the plant quickly roots and grows vigorously. Light lime green sativa dominant hybrid leaves grow large, rapidly. This plant loves to stretch her internodal spacing but takes growth patterns from her Sensi Star lineage — growing wide, wide, wide. She has a tendency to dominate the canopy if not controlled, performing best with high N levels deep into flower (up to day 2021). It can be counted on to produce a sizeable volume of mediumlarge, evenly spaced kolas prioritizing weight & resin production over smell, making her a great choice if stealth is a concern. Make sure you maintain adequate support, as her wide structural shape, large internodal spacing and dense flowers combine with a slightly weaker stem (from the SFV OG Kush no doubt) that easily bends and can snap stems under the weight of her blooms, especially after flower day 50. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya, mate.

EFFECTS Did I medicate yet? I dunno, did I? I’d better wait a little first.

What? So cerebral I almost couldn’t tell that I had medicated as extensively as I had...almost. Jedi Kush makes reality “more real,” bringing a rushing surge of clarity, awareness & energy so similar to waking from a good nap it’s hard to remember it’s Cannabis. It’s certainly a creeper, taking full effect after 10+ minutes. Unlike other creepers, there is no lethargy, there is no fatigue. Jedi Kush is the like the host of an infomercial for your mind and you can’t shut it off.
