Thanks for picking up the first

Oregon Leaf Hemp Issue!

i am excited to shine a light on some of the pioneering farms growing

hemp on the West Coast, and to get the chance to show the beauty as well as the sustainability hemp brings to the table. Truthfully and personally, I believe hemp can change the world! Our planet is being destroyed by humanity choosing to ignore a sustainable option by killing trees, burning oil, petrochemicals and discount a healthy and nutritious source of food and medicine that can meet almost all needs as a society. Hemp is the only plant that gives back to the Earth while healing as a bio accumulator, pulling heavy metals, toxins and radiation out of the soil, which is why it can be found growing at nuclear sites like Chernobyl. Where we really need hemp growing is in backyards across the country. Not merely because of the billions of dollars it can save as an industrial product, and not just because of the enormous medical benefits. It can be as simple as harvesting hemp seeds for a healthy snack. It’s about freedom. As a society, we have come far enough that we must demand the freedom to grow an industrial plant that causes no harm. Our world needs a new source of food, fuel, fiber and energy—and we can start spreading it in backyard gardens. Just as our own government asked citizens to grow hemp for victory in World War II, we must again call on our brothers and sisters to plant hemp for victory. Victory over the petrochemical companies that destroy our lands and poison our waters. Victory over the logging companies that would rather cut old growth forest than lobby to use hemp. Victory over the pharmaceutical companies that would rather patent CBD from hemp or THC from Cannabis than see people treat themselves. There is a War on Drugs, and a battle for our planet’s survival and hemp is at the center of it all. I encourage you to learn more about this plant, to find out how you can plant your own hemp garden and to help change the world one plant at a time. —Wes Abney

Men who smoke large amounts of marijuana could face infertility problems because the herb seems to get semen stoned. Researchers in Canada say it causes sperm to “swim in circles.” Regular weed smoking can cut sperm counts by as much as one-third, according to previous research, reports Scott Campbell at the Daily Mail. But “The weight of the evidence is that marijuana probably has a negative impact not only for sperm counts but REGULAR sperm function,” Dr. Victor WEED Chow of the University of SMOKING CAN CUT British Columbia said. SPERM Cannabis can also reportedly COUNTS BY AS MUCH AS decrease fertility in women ONE-THIRD by suppressing ovulation, according to some studies. Couple Arrested for Marijuana While Looking for Missing Friend in Hurricane

Executive WHO Opposed Legalization Named Top Cannabis Regulator

Police are facing some serious questions on their priorities after a Texas couple was busted for marijuana while looking for a missing friend as Hurricane Harvey hit the area. Corey Mendes and his wife Christy, of Beaumont, were preparing earlier in the day to ride the storm out by getting food and supplies. Part of their supply run before they battened down the hatches was to pick up an ounce of marijuana, reports Stephen Carter of the Texas Cannabis Report. When they learned, later in the day, that a friend had gone missing, the couple headed out in their car to search for him. At one point, an officer with the Nederland Police Department pulled

Steven Hoffman, a seasoned corporate executive who opposed Cannabis legalization, was named Chair of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday. The commission is charged with implementing the legal Cannabis trade in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe. Hoffman’s appointment, made by state Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, makes him the top Cannabis regulator in the state. The 63-year-old Lincoln resident once worked at the major consulting firm Bain & Co. He will hire the commission’s executive director and other staff, and oversee the drafting of rules for marijuana cultivators, processors, and for medical and recreational dispensaries, reports Dan Adams.

14/OCT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

Christy over for driving 5 mph over the speed limit, according to Corey. The officer claimed he smelled marijuana upon approaching the vehicle and proceeded to search the car. That might have been the reason, according to Corey. But it also might have been their embroidered seat covers, which featured stylized marijuana leafs. Christy ended up admitting to the officer that they were in possession of a joint. That’s when the officer found the freshly purchased ounce of weed in the glove box. Corey said they’d forgotten to get the weed out of the car after they got the call about their missing friend. They had rushed home, changed clothes, and immediately went out searching, he said.

Not only did Hoffman oppose legalization, according to Goldberg’s office, he also has absolutely zero experience in the Cannabis industry. This follows Gov. Charlie Baker’s August appointment of state Sen. Joe Ferguson as Hoffman’s fellow commissioner. Ferguson didn’t just vote against it, he actively campaigned against Question 4, which legalized pot in Massachusetts. Hoffman’s selection was immediately criticized by those in the know. They pointed out that the commission runs a real risk of being dominated by marijuana opponents, ironically enough. That would inevitably result in unreasonable regulations on Cannabis companies, and probably limited availability of the herb to consumers, as well.

The Future of The OMMP & The OLCC

ONE SYSTEM TO RULE THEM ALL

With the passage of SB 1057 and HB 2198, we are

witnessing massive changes to the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP). This reflects the pressure that our state government is under from the feds to ensure that legal Cannabis isn’t crossing state boundaries or violating federal drug policy. HB 2198 creates a Cannabis commission to formulate final decisions about the future of the market during this transition for the OMMP. This newly formed commission must submit a report “regarding the future of the OMMP and its governance framework” by Dec. 15. I reached out to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to elaborate on this commission but never received a response. I encourage you to reach out and ask them to elaborate as well! Patients deserve to know what will happen with their supply of medicine. This bill also allows OMMP producers with more than 12 plants to transfer excess product up to 20 pounds per year to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) market, given that “the producer is registered with the OHA when the measure goes into effect.” This bill prohibits OHA or OLCC from requiring security systems on medical grows, although OMMP producers will have to register some additional information with the state. This means the cost of starting a medical grow will be substantially less than an OLCC licensed operation. SB 1057 is aimed at curbing the flow of product leaving the state from legal producers. Montel Williams became a household name in the 1990s as host of

his self-titled show, but the author, activist and media personality’s life story is far more interesting than most. Williams is a decorated veteran, having served in the Marine Corps and the Navy. He’s credited as being the first African American male to host a daytime talk show. With his television program, often called Montel, Williams began as a sort of tabloid-style host – but over time the program moved toward the positive spectrum of life and eschewed the controversial. By the time the program ended in 2008, it was more focused on uplifting messages of love and hope. Williams was dealt a tough blow in 2000 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The disease, his doctor at the time told him, would cut his life in half. Williams started to search for answers, and after being prescribed an heavy cocktail of opioids , he finally encountered a physician who recommended Cannabis. At this point, he does not smoke anymore, and instead uses concentrates. He’s also opened his own dispensary, and more recently, started Lenitiv Labs – a concentrate company focused on purely medical applications for Cannabis in California. “There have been times I’ve been so disappointed with the industry. People jump in, see it as the ‘green rush,’ and forget that 17 years ago people were dragged out of their homes with IVs in their arms, in their wheelchairs, for growing marijuana to treat awful symptoms of cancer,” Williams told Forbes this year. “As things have changed in the past five years, people have forgotten that there were patients left on the battlefield.” Today, Williams is keeping the disease at bay with Cannabis. He’s already healthier than his doctor predicted years ago with his original diagnosis. It’s important to remember that Montel Williams was an early adopter to Cannabis legalization, and he’s been doing so for more than 17 years. That puts him well ahead of many of the celebrities we’ve featured in this column. Without mainstream voices like his, we may have never seen state-level legalization in the United States. And for that, we say a very hearty ‘thank you’ and ‘cheers’ to good health for Montel!

WILLIAMS SAID HE HAS CONSUMED CANNABIS ALMOST EVERY DAY FOR 17 YEARS.

Each month, the Oregon Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Oregon Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS AND EFFECTS? I love the flavor profile of OG Kush and almost anything that is a phenotype of or crossed with it. I love all effects - sativa- or indica-dominant strains, it doesn’t matter. With OG Kush being a hybrid, I feel like I get the best of both worlds. I love a really good body high with a stimulating sense of euphoria. It’s like the saying, “feet on the ground, head in the clouds.” Myrcene is definitely one of my favorite terps! The couchlock feel is one of my favorite effects, especially after a long day.

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? When I was 17, I smoked some OG Kush with my friend. We had a blunt and watched Napoleon Dynamite. We were eating some Starburst candies at the time. After what felt like 30 minutes I started asking myself “Am I not high? Am I high? Is she high? This isn’t working.” Then my friend looked over and said “Are going to keep playing with the candy wrapper or eat it?” I looked down and realized hadn’t opened my candy and that I am, indeed, super high. It was everything! Euphoric, relaxing and liberating all at the same time. I haven’t looked back since.

HOW DO YOU HELP CUSTOMERS FIND THE BEST CANNABIS OR PRODUCTS FOR THEM? Listening and communication. We all use Cannabis for many different reasons and each one of us has different endocannabinoid system. So, I try to find out when or how they plan to consume and what they want from that experience. Any feedback is important for me to hear – and also what they may have tried in the past. When experimenting with Cannabis I try to make sure customers know that what one person experiences from a strain can be different from what another person gets from the same strain. I think that’s the fun part. The journey is finding out that it’s not one-size-fits-all, and that the combination of multiple strains for different times and places is important.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB? I have been a budtender since December of 2015 . I love every aspect of the job, from meeting the growers who pour their heart and soul into their products, to the amazing customers that come to our shop. I feel like this is my calling, my way to help people. Getting to help, interacting with, and the connection we make together is fulfilling. Helping someone feel more confident about their purchases and to see them leave in a better mood literally motivates me to do this each and every day! That, and my team here at Moss Crossing. Being surrounded by these awesome people keeps me waking up excited to go to work! W

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE METHOD OF CONSUMPTION? As this industry has grown by leaps and bounds - the methods to consume have grown and changed with it. I am on the go a lot, so vape cartridges are really good for me. I love to the taste of oil with heavy terpene content. But, at the end of the day, nothing beats a good old joint of some top shelf flower. Something about the process of breaking down your favorite buds and rolling them is therapeutic. That moss crossing will always be my 2751 Friendly St. favorite method of Eugene, Oregon consumption. MossCrossing.com

GARY REED

Our first (but surely not last) budtender to be featured from Eugene is an affable, good-natured soul who provides good vibes from the second you meet him. Gary Reed is a true-blue lover of Cannabis and it shows in the pride he takes in his job.

HELPING SOMEONE FEEL MORE CONFIDENT ABOUT THEIR PURCHASES AND TO SEE THEM LEAVE IN A BETTER MOOD LITERALLY MOTIVATES ME TO DO THIS EVERY DAY!

I feel it’s in our name: Moss Crossing. Moss being green like our favorite flower and representation of the Pacific Northwest. Crossing being a place for people of all walks of life to get together and converse about experiences of Cannabis and the role it plays in our lives. My team is very passionate about Cannabis. An even more passionate about helping people! We want people to feel comfortable talking or asking questions about Cannabis. Our slogan is “The friendliest joint in town.” Since we opened we have developed real bonds with our customers and the community. Our goal is to bring awareness about Cannabis and how it’s beneficial compared to what we, and generations before us, were taught. These are important times in the history of Cannabis and we want to be some of the pioneers that bring in this new age.

HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF CANNABIS? My first love is basketball. I play twice a week. Going to the movies is a big hobby for me. I also practice Wing Chun [Chinese martial art]. My friends are so important to me. Since moving to Oregon, I’ve enjoyed exploring this great state. There are so many natural features and trails. My favorite hobby is taking road trips to Crater Lake with homies and some of his hand rolled Moss blunts with custom wood tips for the adventure!

XIANNA MARCUS RELIEF FROM SCOLIOSIS PAIN WITH CANNABIS

I

sat down this month with Portland OMMP patient Xianna Marcus to talk about how she uses Cannabis to treat scoliosis. This medical condition, in which the spine has a sideways curve, affects more than three million people per year. Marcus was diagnosed with scoliosis at 15 years old after a physical exam required for volleyball, she endured surgery that same year. “I didn’t know I had it until I got a physical exam while I was trying to join organized sports. When the physician was checking my spine, she asked if I had scoliosis. I replied no, and she sent me to a specialist. After an X-ray, it showed I had a spinal curvature at 64 degrees. It never bothered me until I wanted to be more active with sports. Running hurt because I didn’t realize I had scoliosis.” Soon after Marcus was diagnosed with scoliosis, she had a spinal fusion in 2007. For those who aren’t familiar with a spinal fusion, it’s a lengthy, major surgery during which metal implants are used to hold vertebrae until new bones grow between them. Marcus tried things like massage therapy but she still couldn’t exercise without being in pain. “The spinal fusion was a really invasive orthopedic surgery. When I started talking with my surgeon on the whole process, I didn’t understand as a kid how serious a spinal fusion was—or the aftermath and lengthy healing process. It was really scary after the surgery. I thought I was mentally prepared, but the recovery

24/oct. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

was a lot more intense than I expected,” she said. “My mom wouldn’t let me hold anything heavier than a plate. I lost a ton of weight and I couldn’t eat anything—my appetite was non-existent from the pills [opiates].” Originally, she wanted to join a sports team with her friends, but Marcus didn’t realize the physical or mental cost of the spinal fusion procedure. Marcus was prescribed OxyContin and plenty of stool softeners. Her hospital stay lasted seven days after the procedure, and she was on opiates for a month to deal with the pain. It wasn’t until college that Marcus was properly introduced to Cannabis. Marcus used Cannabis casually in high school, but the stresses of college made her a more serious user. “I love college because it stressed me out so much, it introduced me to smoking weed. I went to the University of Oregon, and Eugene has a really cool Cannabis community. It’s easy for me to go to the doctor and get pretty much whatever prescription I want because of my scoliosis. But I knew I didn’t want to go down that road again,” Marcus said. “Weed was the only thing in college that got me to

the next day. I loved feeling not hungover so I could make it to my classes. I didn’t realize it then, but Cannabis was helping my anxiety and depression. I also noticed I was sleeping better when I’d smoke at night—which was so relieving. Cannabis helped me bounce back from excessive drinking. I feel like there is a negative façade about being a stoner, especially as a woman. I got a lot of shit from the girls I lived with about my use.” Commonly, people move from casual and social use of Cannabis into conscious and medicinal use. Marcus’ initial use was social, but once she began noticing significant relief, she started looking into seriously using Cannabis to treat her chronic pain. Additionally, women often face a double standard when it comes to using Cannabis—especially among peers. It’s the pressure of the patriarchy telling us the “ideal” woman doesn’t and shouldn’t smoke. The social stigma of Cannabis still prevents people from realizing its medicinal benefits. “I don’t view Cannabis as a substance. I can substitute Cannabis for something I depend on to function. Cannabis is way healthier than anything that’s advertised legally. You have to find hobbies and healthy ways to cope with the pain,” Marcus said. Marcus has already been down the road of opiates as a minor, when she endured a spinal fusion. Marcus still deals with residual spinal pain, but she is able to get through most days with the help of Cannabis. Standing for long periods of time or demanding physical labor can bother her spine, causing an “irritable” pain. I asked her what she would recommend to someone looking to treat their scoliosis with Cannabis. “For scoliosis patients—being uncomfortable all the time makes us irritable. Edibles are my favorite way to treat the pain. I use mostly full extract cannabis oil (FECO) and vaping CBD. About 50mg of THC works for me and I try to use as much CBD as possible. It’s not about being ‘ripped’ per se, it’s about being comfortable. I love high sativa and high-CBD strains, because I am functional while controlling my pain,” Marcus said. Cannabis provides patients with long-term chronic pain management, without the risk of developing an addiction, unlike opiates. Marcus has an immense work ethic and holds down two jobs despite dealing with pain from scoliosis. Cannabis, plenty of deep stretching and being active is how Marcus manages her pain. Insurance does not cover Cannabis-related costs, so everything has to come out-ofpocket. Marcus believes you must find other ways to deal with pain beyond Cannabis, or even opiates, if you use them. “Keeping yourself medicated isn’t always affordable. I feel like finding ways to heal outside of getting high is also really important. Stretching, getting a full night’s rest and being active are all a part of the healing process.”

IT’S NOT ABOUT BEING ‘RIPPED’ PER SE, IT’S ABOUT BEING COMFORTABLE. I LOVE HIGH SATIVA AND HIGH-CBD STRAINS, BECAUSE I AM FUNCTIONAL WHILE CONTROLLING MY PAIN.

Originally bred by Exotic Genetics, this version by Resin

Ranchers carries a sweet and creamy terpene profile that is unmistakable, if you’ve tried the strain before. This phenotype, grown by Resin Ranchers, is no exception. Popping the 0.74% container reveals a sweet, orange cream soda smell that stings the nostrils with childhood nostalgia. The buds are dense and packed with clear trichome heads. I smoked this flower in the form of two smaller joints. THE SCORE The creamy profile is very noticeable on the a rom a inhale, while a more funky, OG taste could be detected on the exhale. Each joint burned de n s ity smoothly and evenly, however the ash burned cure slightly blacker than expected as more time l ooks flushing during the feedings might be needed. fl avor I recommend this strain to consumers looking e ffe ct for a heavy hitting, relaxing strain that is great tota l 24/30 to end the work day with. STRAIN OF THE MONTH This high CBD cross of

Durban Poison and Valentine X leans more on the Durban side as the smell and structure are more airy like a sativa. Opening up the jar reveals a lime and piney terpene profile, which is rather unique for a CBD strain. The buds are small in structure but are well manicured and handled, as the trichomes were undisturbed. I smoked this flower out of a clean water pipe and immediately noticed a focusing yet relaxing effect. The Durban lineage provided a clear, euphoric buzz while the Valentine X added a relaxing body euphoria which was great after a long work day. The near 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC makes this strain a great option for novice smokers and consumers looking for less psychoactive effects. Bull Run Craft Cannabis grows both light deprivation and indoor, and they are able to produce quality organic Cannabis for a range of prices. This cultivar is particularly useful for consumers seeking a euphoric, focused high that stimulates creativity without the anxious effects.

OREGON FUSION

Oregon Fusion’s farm is found on a beautiful property in Boring, Oregon. The company grows and processes hemp and aims to create a diverse selection of products for consumers worldwide. Owner and founder Adam Kurtz, relocated to Oregon from New York after successful careers in both the fresh cut flower and commercial photography industries. After careful consideration of the laws in each legalized state, Kurtz picked Oregon for its lax structure, low permit cost and extreme lack of market competition. To give some perspective on just how extreme, Oregon clocked in at only 20 registered acres while states such as Kentucky had more than 1,700 and Colorado had more than 3,600. Oregon Fusion produces honey products, olive oil, whole plant extracts and more using high end super critical CO2 extraction machines. Adam utilizes his tried and true farmers market approach to selling his products and regularly has booth space at the Happy Valley Farmers Market held annually from late April to the end of September in Clackamas.

Boring Hemp Company is a family farm, run by a trio of brothers and their father. Together, they’ve been farming at the Boring property since the early 80s. In 2015, when Oregon created legislation to support hemp producer licenses, the family decided to apply. Boring Hemp Company’s second property, located only a few minutes away from the family’s multi-generational land, is found next to a school. One can almost envision teachers leading students out into the field to teach about our world’s most versatile plant. Boring Hemp Company farms organically with inputs limited to dry amendments and clean well water from the property. The farm continually works to find the most efficient growing, harvesting and processing methods as well as to educate fellow farmers and provide seed for those looking to farm the plant.

WHY HEMP MATTERS As

a kid, I was taught we should always try to leave the world a better place than we found it. And as a kid, it seemed simple. If you go hiking, pick up your trash. Captain Planet reinforced this message—we all need to come together to take care of our planet. At some point, our collective home became second to simple, easy products and corporate profits. It’s time we changed that. Locking someone in a cage for a plant makes as much sense as making a synthetic plastic that can be made with a plant fiber. Which is to say, none. What does it make sense is that for nearly a century our country’s allowed corporate special interests to dominate law and order, locking our brothers and sisters in jail for Cannabis while hiding the benefits of hemp from the masses? People are waking up, not only to injustices surrounding the War on Drugs in relation to Cannabis and hemp, but to the greater problems our world is heading toward, quickly. If someone had a cure for cancer and didn’t release it, morally it’s unthinkable, and potentially a crime against humanity. So, shouldn’t cutting down old growth forest instead of harvesting hemp be looked at in the same way? Or injecting chemicals in our groundwater for fracking natural gas, when we have a plant that can create a bio-alternative? Burning any gas or oil from the earth, when we have endless wind energy, solar and tidal power? The evidence surrounding climate change is undeniable—the consequences of our collective carbon footprint are only now being felt. We must demand accountability and change, for future generations and the planet we call home. Hemp has more than 50,000 documented uses that involve every aspect of human life. From cleaning up pollution and radiation to providing food, fuel and clothing—hemp can provide almost everything we need as a society in a sustainable way. Our hemp issue this year focuses primarily on the farms that are emerging in Oregon, the first wave of a growing industry bringing change and hope for our future. American farms need profitable, sustainable crops that are not controlled by Monsanto or dependent on government subsidies to be profitable. Hemp is an in-demand product that our country spends hundreds of millions of dollars importing yearly. That could switch to an export commodity that creates jobs and raises the domestic GDP, it’s happening in the Northwest. It’s never too late to make change, and the progress being made in the Northwest is a tribute to exactly that. Oregon Leaf is honored to share these farms pushing the forefront of the hemp industry, a glimpse into the products and a few of the 50,000 uses for hemp.

Eugene

HEMP PRESS

Hemp Press was founded in 2013 by Matthew Glyer as modern day America’s first exclusively hemp based print company. This means Hemp Press does not print on any tree-based paper, but exclusively on processed hemp fiber paper. There are fewer than eight companies printing on hemp paper in the United States and Glyer’s company is the only one to do it exclusively. Hemp Press provides businesses with packaging, flyers, posters, business cards and more, all with better pricing and turn-around while using only American manufacturing and paying living wages to Oregonians. The company employs eight individuals at its Eugene’s headquarters. In addition to traditional promotional materials under Hemp Press, Glyer also prints business cards that double as a small sheet of joint tips under a brand called Crutch Card. Unknown to many, traditional inks are labeled hazardous by OSHA, which is why the company developed proprietary water based inks safe for use on the rolling paper tips. “At the core of my passion to empower industrial hemp for paper is the protection of our forests from the devastating impact of the global print and paper industry, which cuts down over 7.5 billion trees a year for paper alone,” Glyer said. “We hope to restore a regenerative, sustainable hemp economy to American soil and bring meaningful industrial, agricultural and manufacturing jobs to Oregon.”

OREGON LEAF

LEARN ABOUT HEMP This month, our team decided to dive in and explore the vast world of hemp for our first ever Hemp Issue of Oregon Leaf. Oregon began granting hemp farming permits in 2014 and is now up to more than 3,400 acres of hemp state wide. It is our hope that with this issue, and with each issue annually hereafter, we can inspire individuals to cultivate, process and innovate with this amazing plant we’ve been so blessed to know. From food to fuel to clothing to building materials, to medicine to bioremediation, the hemp plant provides it all, making it the most diverse and usable plant mankind has available. The famed Jack Herer once wrote “I don’t know if hemp is going to save the world, but it’s the only thing that can.”

We wholeheartedly agree.

Each bottle contains 24mg of CBD that can easily be dosed into smaller amounts. I drank the entire bottle, as I have a rather high tolerance. The intense flavor of the spices and herbs completely masked any taste from the hemp extract as each sip tasted robust and complex. Around 20 minutes after drinking the chai, I began to feel a relaxing body euphoria that eased my muscle tension and loosened my stiff joints. The pure CBD was perfect for the work day, as I needed pain relief without the psychoactivity. I did feel a slight caffeine buzz from the mixture of herbal teas however, the CBD was able to take the edge off for me. Med With Love makes a variety of other infused teas, coffees, mochas and probiotic sodas that are worth picking up.

I was fortunate enough to review the “Dab Rocks” from Irie which is a hemp derived CBD isolate. 3 solid crystal rocks made up this half gram as it was rather difficult trying to break off a piece for a dab. The isolate is most effective when dabbed, preferably mixed with a THC extract to provide an entourage effect. The crystals dabbed smoothly and melted into a perfectly clear liquid with no visible impurities. Moments after dabbing a warm, relaxing sensation washed over my body as I began to feel my anxiety dissipate. CBD isolate is versatile as it can be dabbed or melted down into foods and capsules to be ingested. Hemp CBD products are a great way for people who can’t or don’t want to ingest or smoke THC as they offer relief for a variety of symptoms and are also easily accessible across the United States.

MARIJUANA MANIFESTO How Lies, Corruption, and Propaganda Kept Cannabis Illegal By JESSE VENTURA, 2017, 292 PAGES, $16.99

J

esse Ventura always gets a lot of attention and he has ever since his days as a professional wrestler. That attention, both positive and negative, only intensified when he became the Governor of Minnesota. One major reason is he tends to be a no-bullshit, straight-shooting guy. That level of candor may not be unusual for a wrestler, but it’s damned unusual for a politician. And refreshing as hell. After Washington state voters approved a weakened, no-home-grow marijuana law, Ventura rightly called out the tepidity of I-502. And his long tradition of speaking truth continues — delightfully so — in this new tome. More than ever before, the USA needs full, real legalization of both medical and recreational Cannabis and hemp. Seemingly every week goes by bringing exciting new revelations about the healthful properties of marijuana. The medicinal plant is in abundant supply, but legalization finds stiff resistance from a government corrupted by Big Pharma money and campaign cash from law enforcement and corrections industries. Ventura offers his always-interesting takes on why the government patented CBD, and how Big Pharma companies are trying for exclusive rights to create marijuana medication, and why the Drug Enforcement Administration simply cannot be trusted. Marijuana Manifesto is a rallying cry to finally end the War On Drugs. Legalizing Cannabis, Ventura notes, will serve to rejuvenate the sluggish economy and help make people healthier and happier.

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, is a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He splits his time between homes in Minnesota and Baja, Mexico.
