Editor’s Note Hemp is going to save the planet - that’s no exaggeration.
Love disposable straws but hate killing the oceans? Hemp makes alternative biodegradable plastics. It is a wonder plant that can provide everything from food, fiber, fuel, medicine, building materials and so much more. Everything a petrochemical touches in our society for convenience items we could be making with a renewable resource and healing the earth instead of poisoning it with carbon emissions and more waste. Oregon has been the epicenter for a rapidly expanding hemp industry that is changing the face of this industrial plant. When we first began covering hemp farms in 2016 there were about 30 across the state. Last year that number was in the hundreds, and this year there are easily a thousand different hemp farms across the state, ranging from backyard producers to massive agricultural setups. Much like the Cannabis boom, hemp is spreading across the Pacific Northwest and the impact is being felt nationwide. We are at a turning point as a society and a species as we realize that we cannot continue to live in destructive patterns for our planet, or people. Hemp and CBD wellness are big drivers of this, as we bring healing to our planet, and I feel honored to play a part in spreading awareness of the plant and the people doing amazing things with it. Check out our stories inside this issue for new ways to use hemp, and Additionally, I also want to mention our redesign. If you’ve enjoyed the Leaf over the years you can definitely notice that we have changed our look, but our content and message is still the same. Bales of Marijuana Wash Ashore in Florida TALK ABOUT HIGH TIDE. Large packages of Cannabis are washing up on beaches in northeast Florida, just as they did back in the 1970s. Weed has been discovered on beaches in Flagler, St. John’s and Volusia counties in September, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities collected more than 100 pounds of weed wrapped in bundles over two days after receiving reports of “multiple packages, presumably containing marijuana” on the beach near Jungle Hut Park. The U.S. Coast Guard found “seven or eight” more packages off the coast, reports the Washington Post. Meanwhile, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy in St. Johns County, just north of Flagler County, fished another package of weed from the water. Additionally, more ganja showed up to the south, in Volusia County. Surfers located a bundle containing 23 bags of weed in Ormond-by-theSea, reports WFTV-9 ABC. In Flagler County, one unlucky stoner got busted after “failing to report” an 11-pound “wet brick” of marijuana on the beach. Witnesses said they saw Robert Kelley open the package and remove its contents, according to law enforcement. Deputies asked Kelley if he took some of the marijuana. Kelley claimed he was “holding it for law enforcement.” It didn’t work; officers seized the brick, which they found wrapped in a beach towel in Kelley’s trunk. “Others were attempting to do the same thing,” according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Department.

STONED LOBSTERS ONE RESTAURANT IN MAINE is using Cannabis to get lobsters stoned before killing them. Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound claims the process is more humane, speculating that it lessens the crustaceans’ pain when they are boiled alive. Lobsters are often cooked by dropping them, alive, into a pot of boiling water. There is growing scientific evidence that the creatures experience pain. Other crustaceans, such as crayfish and crabs, also can feel pain, according to the evidence. Customers at the restaurant can choose whether they want to consume a stoned lobster or a straight one. Charlotte Gill, who owns the place, said eating the stoned lobsters won’t get diners high. But it does help taste quality, she claimed, because the lobsters are “more relaxed” when they die. “If we’re going to take a life, we have a responsibility to do it as humanely as possible,” Gill told Mount Desert Islander newspaper. “The difference it makes within the meat itself is unbelievable.”

THE LATEST VERSION of a federal drug use study shows monthly Cannabis use continues to rise among older Americans. As of 2017, Americans from 55 to 64 are more likely to use weed on at least a monthly basis than youths from 12 to 17. Seniors 65 and older are also smoking pot in increasing numbers, according to the study. In the mid-2000s, monthly pot use among this groups were almost zero. But last year, 2.4 percent of seniors used weed every month, and nearly 4 percent used it at least once a year. Federal data showed that Cannabis use among middle-aged Americans surpassed teen use several years ago. Many of the middleaged users are returning to pot a few years after drifting away from it. With the wave of legalization occurring just as Baby Boomers enter their golden years, many of them are revisiting some of the experiences of their youth. More than 20 percent of pot users 65 and older said a physician had recommended they use Cannabis, according to a recent study by Benjamin Han and Joseph Palamar of New York University. Medicare prescriptions for opioid painkillers are lower in states with medical marijuana programs.

Will the Federal Government ever allow nationwide Hemp cultivation?
18 What do Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have in common? They both think America should be legally growing and trading hemp. A perfect example of how Cannabis can help bring people together! Senator Wyden introduced the first bill in 2012, along with officials from Kentucky, motivated by former agriculture commissioner and rookie representative James Comer (R-KY). However, these efforts failed due to political fear of hemp and the stigma of its relationship to Cannabis. But Kentucky didn’t give up in an effort to help its farmers; many of which had previously grown tobacco but failed due to market conditions and corporatization/conglomeration of farming. In 2013 Mitch McConnell, the sitting Senate majority leader and representative from Kentucky came out of his shell and got behind the hemp movement. The alliance allowed for agricultural hemp pilot research programs to be allowed and studied in the passage of the 2014 farm bill, a comprehensive agriculture omnibus bill which sets all of our farming policies in one giant bill that’s reviewed about every four years. Today, these efforts have evolved into H.R. 5485 (Rep. Comer, R-KY) and S. 2667 (Sen. McConnell, R-KY) as well as inclusions of language in the 2018 omnibus farm bill and many other bills aimed at modifying the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to allow

for industrial hemp production and trade. The Senate version of the 2018 Omnibus Farm Bill (S. 3042 [115]) passed with language that would remove hemp from the CSA. However, the house version of the bill (H.R. 2) did not pass with the necessary language included removing hemp from the CSA. However as mentioned, it is not the only effort to amend the CSA to allow for hemp cultivation and research, and at least one of these bills is expected to prevail into law. Sen. McConnell and Rep. Comer both sit on the committee overseeing the 2018 joint (house and senate) farm bill, which will be discussed and drafted in late September. This gives both men a great opportunity to advocate for a legal hemp solution successfully. I hope these efforts will pass successfully and amend the CSA because we cannot forget that until they do that CBD is still a classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic (meaning it has no medicinal value.) We also cannot forget our federal government owns the patents to many of the therapeutic uses for Cannabis (including CBD from hemp.) It’s also important to remember that just because Mitch McConnell likes hemp, it doesn’t mean he has progressed his platform that much. The bills still have many elements that continue to treat hemp like a schedule 1 drug. The language specifically excludes anyone previously convicted of any drug felony from participating. This sentiment is mirrored by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) which has repeatedly refused to consider rescheduling both CBD and THC. They have put these feelings into action on many occasions, including seizing shipments of legal hemp seeds bound for university pilot hemp farming projects that the 2014 farm bill initiated. This is a great opportunity for this country to come together and do what we do best – innovate. Also, our current antagonistic trade war policies have resulted in an increase in the price of imported hemp, which serves as yet another reason that we should develop domestic hemp production; especially considering we are one of the top hemp consuming nations. There is a lot of work to be done to re-establish hemp supply chains and develop new cultivation technology and practices in order to make it a crop successful enough to convince farmers to cultivate it over tobacco, soy, corn, and cotton. All three of those crops have had tremendous amounts of energy put into developing and marketing new products to be made from the crop to increase demand. This will need to be done with hemp as well if it’s going to compete sustainably.

This month we will take another look at Cannabis testing in Oregon – what that means for producers, labs, and consumers. Last month, I learned through my interviews with a producer and a lab that there can be a great degree of variance in Cannabis potency numbers. What does a potency test percentage mean to you as someone who previously worked at an accredited Oregon testing lab? It can mean how strong the effects of a product can be, but it does not tell you how it will actually make you feel at all. Since I have worked in both the lab and cultivar branches of the market, I know that ALL the cannabinoids, terpenes, and even flavonoids etc. have an effect on how euphoric or high you would feel. There are studies that prove it is the Entourage Effect that gives a flower its effects, not just the total THC percentage.

Is it possible for the producers to influence their numbers (via grow/cure method or other tricks?) How do these methods affect the quality of the final Cannabis product? Yes, producers can influence their numbers by growing plants until they are actually finished by scoping trichomes. Cutting plants that are immature or too mature can cause a loss in total THC. Another huge thing producers can do is cure properly. Producers have a tendency of drying too quickly. A proper drying period should take almost three weeks at 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 percent humidity. Then it should still be burped in bags or bins for a couple more weeks. In total it should take about five weeks to cure flower properly. It will keep the cannabinoids intact and terpenes from volatilizing. It causes the finished product to have maximum potency and the best possible flavor and smell. Is it possible for labs to influence potency numbers? How would this happen hypothetically? It is possible for a sketchy-dishonest lab technician to influence potency results. In all of the Oregon recreational marijuana labs, aliquots taken to be extracted for testing, are weighed. That weight is recorded manually on paper and digitally. Some labs may print weights directly from the scale, but I know most do not because the state does not require this to be done. That means if someone wanted to, they could change the recorded weight to a weight that is smaller than what the aliquot actually weighs or add more to the aliquot without recording the difference; both would cause the potency to appear higher than it should.

What is the biggest benefit that current lab testing provides to consumers in your eyes? The biggest benefit is definitely the pesticide testing. Just making sure people are not using easily accessible poisonous products to treat their plants is huge for the consumer. Oregon screens for more pesticides for marijuana than any other agricultural product in any other state. I think this is very important when wanting a safe product for consumers. During the OMMP only days mold and mildew testing were required, under the current OLCC adult use system we have there is no mandatory testing for this. Have you ever seen or purchased a product with mold or pm in an OLCC dispensary? I have, and I am not happy about it. I think it is very easy for a retail store employee or owner to see the mold or mildew on the flower. I get you probably cannot inspect every single bud that comes into the store but what I received was very noticeable. I think to solve any problems with this is to just require the microbial contamination test again. It does not cost much, and it is very easy to do. As a Cannabis consumer what indicators do you look for when buying products in an OLCC dispensary? I always go for smell first. I’ll then look for other attributes like trichome size and density, bud structure, and then I’ll look to see what cannabinoids and terpenes are predominant so I can decide if it is right for what I need it for.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that a variance in potency percentage is not necessarily a direct public health threat; it just means some people will get slightly higher or less affected than they expected. That being said, with more people than ever trying Cannabis for the first time it would be nice to know exactly what you’re getting into. Also, Oregon has the strictest pesticide testing in the nation for any agricultural product, so testing is providing a great public benefit! I want this information to empower you as a Cannabis lover and consumer to trust your own intuition and senses when choosing between different cannabis options! If you still feel confused your budtender should be able to provide more insight into the products on the shelf!

orge moved from Indiana to Oregon in 2015 to join the OMMP program. “My new oncologist was on board with using Cannabis in conjunction with chemotherapy, so I applied for my card within a couple months of moving here,” she said. Before she was diagnosed with CML, she was using Cannabis to treat the anxiety and stress related to her seizure disorder. She was familiar with the therapeutic properties of Cannabis and was lucky enough to find an oncologist who would support her decision to use the medicinal plant. Given the severity of Jorge’s medical issues, the OMMP was equipped to help her navigate Cannabis treatments while in chemo. “On days when the muscle and bone pain is so intense, Cannabis helps to ease the inflammation. When nausea hits hard from chemotherapy and I can’t stomach food, certain strains ease more than prescription medication. I also make an infused oil full extract Cannabis oil (FECO) melted in medium-chain triglycerides oil (MCT, like coconut oil) to put in capsules and take orally,” she said. “The Cannabis-infused oil I make for ingesting in capsules also works well as a muscle oil. Sometimes, I make a crock pot of infused olive oil to use in soups and more savory foods. hile Fran Drescher is best known for her leading role in the 1990s television sitcom “The Nanny,” she’s been an accomplished actress in television and film since the 1970s. As “The Nanny,” Drescher’s lovably-unique voice and sharp wit made her a fan favorite almost overnight, and she went on to win two Emmy’s and Golden Globes for her work on the show. Dresher’s NYC attitude combined with a sense of grace and over-the-top Queens style seemed not too far removed from her own persona, and that resonated with Americans of all backgrounds. Once her role as “The Nanny” came to an end, Drescher moved outside of TV and film, working with the Oregon State Department as a diplomatic envoy, and as an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights and women’s health issues. First Cannabis experience? I had my first experience with Cannabis at the age of 22, and the strain I smoked was OG Kush. I have been in love with the plant since that first bong hit. I remember the experience as being happy, uplifting, euphoric, and of course, it came with a large dose of the munchies as promised by the legend of OG Kush!
How do you find the right strains or products for a customer? I normally ask customers how they want to feel and what effects they’d like to get from Cannabis. Sometimes it’s necessary to ask them what type of relief they need. After that, it’s all about what appeals to their senses. What smells they like, and what flavors appeal to them.
How long have you been a budtender? What’s your favorite part about the job? I’ve been a budtender for about a year and a half. But you could say I’ve been in the industry for over 15 years, due to the whole “black market” thing. I love helping people discover Cannabis for the first time as well as helping people find the right strain to help with their ailments.
How do you feel about the current testing requirements by the OLCC? I wish that testing was standardized, as I feel that there is too much subjectivity in the algorithms that are used by each lab. I do not put much faith in the THC or CBD percentages. While they are very much an important component of the plant, I am personally, all about the terpene profile as that is really what determines the effect and the relief/ feeling/high that you get from Cannabis.

What’s your favorite method of consuming cannabis? I love bong hits! For me, it’s all about taking the smoothest hit possible. Smoking flower out of a beautiful scientific bong is tops for me.

What are some of your favorite cannabis strains? Favorite effects/terpene profiles? I love strains like Durban Poison, Dutch Treat, Mendo Purps, and OG varieties. Two of my favorite terpene profiles are limonene and terpinolene. Terpinolene, which is found predominantly in the Dutch Treat, provides an uplifting experience while reducing stress. Limonene is found in Durban Poison and while isn’t immediately noticeable, its subtly sweet and earthy aroma will make you feel uplifted and stress-free.
What makes your shop’s approach to customer service different? I think what sets our shop apart, is that we take the time to educate each customer with each sale. We are a smaller shop, so we do have the luxury of spending a few extra minutes with our customers each day. What are some of your hobbies/interests outside the Cannabis industry? I am a foodie. I love to cook (when I have time) and I was raised in the PNW so I spend a lot of time camping, floating the river, and hanging out with my family in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

As we cruise down the coast and stop by our favorite summer destinations, we’re constantly surprised at how many new shops open up month to month. Hashstoria is our latest coastal favorite. Located just under the historically famous Astoria-Megler cantilever bridge, this is a small town stop with a ton of day trip potential. We found this humble shop to have a large diverse selection of product with a friendly knowledgeable and professional staff.

Both their refrigerated and pantry-style selection is well-displayed, with shelves chock-full of almost every brand imaginable. It seems in this department Hashstoria carries full lines of many companies such as a staff favorite, Adabinol.

With over 190 different items listed online, true to the name, Hashstoria has an almost ridiculous amount of concentrates on their menu. Extracts alone, there are over 150 flavors of hash available. In every conceivable category, from Solventless Hash Rosin to Living Dead Resin to full melt and diamonds. You’ll find many of your favorite brands on the shelf as well, from Willamette Valley Alchemy to some of the best coastal extractors. They also carry a lot of exclusive extractions, making a stop here for hash aficionados is a must. Though, to get an idea of all the flavors – you need to know to ask the manager for a look into the vault.

While Hashstoria certainly isn’t an upscale boutique, the shop’s cozy vibe and friendly employees are what makes the experience unique. Soft green couches greet you when you enter, along with a great mural painted by local artist @supermariopaints. There’s enough space for multiple customers to be served at the same time.
QUICK HIT What Hashstoria lacks in interior design, it makes up for in friendly service and mammoth selection. We found many items by brands that weren’t available in Portland or other big markets. Plus, we get a real mom-andpop vibe during our visit and it felt like corporate money hadn’t yet infiltrated this special little spot with a great location.

This perfectly manicured deep purple flower is a connoisseur’s dream. The dense, terp’afied leaves glisten in the light, exhibiting an abundance of red hairs coupled with radiant crystals. Judging on appearance alone, this purple beauty is surely grade A Herb. Warm, cheesy notes with a sweet sticky candy like aroma fill my nostrils with bliss. A familiar and comforting essence comes over my body from simply the fragrance alone. The smoke was very satisfying with weet berry like notes with a crisp minty clean after taste. Sunset Sherbert genetics are derived from my three all time favorite strains ( OG Kush X Cherry Pie X Durban Poison), the effects are powerful to say TASTE 5/5 the least. A strong cerebral high VALUE 4/5 infused my body with a desire EFFECT 5/5 to focus and be productive. The presentation of this alchemical master piece grabbed my attention as my eyes were scanning the abundant selection of concentrates available. Presented in a sleek black matte box with a cute and curious Happy Cabbage Frost Logo, this Ice derived Solventless Hash Rosin delivered an all around aficionado experience. The outer package includes a see through window where the extract can be seen, the inner package holds a tightly sealed medical grade glass container. As I screw the container open, sharp citrus limonene notes backed with a sweet piney essence touch my nose. I’m instantly intrigued, this hash rosin is a beautiful golden full melt of terpy pleasure. The selection here is sort of all over the place. While the chalkboard menu directs in-store visitors to the flower list with ease, both the Leafly and Weedmaps versions of the online menu were poorly updated, listing a proliferation of flower without basic details like what farm each came from. Highlights include a few strains from PDX Organics, Oregon Roots and Sons of Agronomy. Most strains, if labeled, seem to fall into the indica category, with cultivars like Blackberry Kush, Rude Boi and one of the lone two CBD strains, Pennywise.

CONCENTRATES You’ll be pleased to discover that Marijuana Paradise is no slouch when it comes to their concentrate selection. It’s nice and robust, with just about every major brand name making an appearance. Expect a generous selection of cartridges from Buddies and Winberry Farms along other items like Claywolf Extracts and plenty from Dr. Jolly’s. The bulk of the concentrates vary, though the majority hail from Botanical Laboratories and Farmer’s Friend extracts, with a little merch here and there.

Soft and springy to the touch, PDX Organics’ Jelly Sickle #4 is an 80/20 indica dominant hybrid, a cross between Purple Punch and Jelly Breath. The flower bears a light green hue that’s complemented by a high volume of pale orange trichomes. While it may be visually stunning, it’s decidedly misleading as it isn’t organic despite the ‘PDX Organics’ label. The smell, though, is incredibly enticing, with a AROMA 4/5 sweetness that draws DENSITY 4/5 you in from the CURE 4/5 moment you open LOOKS 5/5 the jar. A few hits FLAVOR 5/5 are all you need to EFFECTS 4/5 experience a blissed TOTAL 26/30 out state of deep chill.

It’s all warm seas and high sailing in here. From the outdoor surfboards flanking the doorway to the poster of sprawling palm trees inside, you get the sense that in here everything is on island time, mon. Hard wooden floors accented with bamboo further the effect, providing you with a sensation of bliss and calm. It’s the perfect place to come in and leisurely stroll through products without feeling rushed. Flower strains are colorfully posted on a chalkboard directly across from a fish tank to keep things extra colorful.
QUICK HIT The vibes and atmosphere in here may be nice and breezy, but there’s work to be done with regard to filling out a more robust strain selection. If you’re in search of good concentrates, though, it’s a great place to stop by and get to peek in at a healthy selection of products from live resin cartridges to shatter. The best thing Marijuana Paradise can do to make this beautifully decorated space into a true haven is keeping a more diligent eye on updating their menu, which is sometimes the only resource first-time users have to rely on.

When he hit high school, he began driving his cousin, who had undergone multiple brain surgeries to remove cancerous tumors, to one of the few early medical co-ops in Portland. It was here that Fraser learned to love and respect the plant and understand it as more than a commodity. After high school, Fraser helped with a number of medical grows while working in corporate sales positions and starting a couple businesses of his own. He was one of the original hires for Dope Magazine’s Oregon division, and spent over two years helping develop their program in-state and nationally. Since then, he has focused his energy on his family and building the infrastructure for his new project: D’Luxe Concepts. when did you first begin using Cannabis? I first started using Cannabis in high school, maybe 14 or so. Growing up in Oregon I never knew how spoiled we were until I started traveling and realized Cannabis wasn’t as good or as readily available everywhere else.

Can you tell us about the D’luxe brand? D’Luxe Concepts started out as a product development group oriented towards, but not specific to, the Cannabis industry. It has since developed to encompass the rapidly growing hemp sector of the market with the launch of our most recent brand D’Luxe Hemp Company. We are committed to developing and launching products with an emphasis on quality over quantity. I am a firm believer that overproduction and lack of quality control can kill a brand, or at least their reputation.
this is a tough biz. What keeps you motivated? My partners and I have a mantra that we live by, “No Market for Mids.” This can be applied to all products and services but holds a special place in this industry specifically. The market on the Cannabis side is proving to be a sprint to see who can pump out the most product for as low a production cost as possible. We have a different approach. Oregon has the opportunity to be the Cognac or the champagne of the Cannabis industry if we play our cards right. We are a connoisseur market from craft beer/wine to culinary, and even coffee. Oregonians will support premium products, so why settle for mediocrity? Once federal regulations change, people all over the country and maybe the world will be asking for quality, Oregon made products, not to say they aren’t already.
WhY DID YOU DECIDE TO cofound a hemp company? It’s kind of funny, really. After working in the industry for a number of years, I watched partnerships form and dissolve every other month. I was specifically not looking to partner with any new company with Cannabis market in Oregon as unstable as it has been. It came down to finding the right partners, a couple of guys that shared my passion for quality as well as my desired approach and we’ve been rocking since. We all have our own lanes and it’s essential that we stay in them. What has been the most challenging aspect of building a career in Cannabis for you? Being flexible. These industries, both hemp and Cannabis, will beat you up. They will throw you curve balls and they will sweep the

here are CBD-rich flowers, and then there’s Alter Farms’ Cherry Wine. Coming in at an insane 20 percent CBD and less than one percent THC, this cross between The Wife and Charlotte’s Cherries took home last year’s Cultivation Classic award for best outdoor flower in the CBD category. The flower itself is moderately dense, retaining a good sponginess that’s rife with trichomes hidden away in every leaf. Notes of black pepper balance out the flavor to yield something that’s equally sweet and spicy. A few tokes are enough to instantly put the most stressed-out user at ease. The spice of the black pepper reels you in, finishing cleanly with a brightness that’s reminiscent of roses or cardamom. It follows, then, that the predominant terpenes should contain caryophyllene and geranyl acetate, a monoterpene found in roses. The effects of this highly prized pheno are very subtle. It provides a gentle body buzz while lifting your spirits considerably. One bowl is all I need to run around telling everyone how much I love them and am grateful to have them in my life. There’s a significant painrelieving component that makes this flower the perfect mix in for high THC strains; alternatively, you can just smoke it on its own for pain relief that’s non-intoxicating, making it a great cultivar to indulge in a little wake and bake with.

How and when was Mission Lago founded?
Mission Lago Farm was started two years ago when Ethan Brown, the Simpson family and myself had a strong interest in the hemp/CBD market. We believe (and have seen first hand) that CBD has incredible benefits to the human body as well as animals and we felt that the CBD market was on the verge of exploding. After traveling to several states researching the markets and landscapes available, we decided on Southern Oregon. This area has some of the best growing conditions in the country and Oregon has one of the best and most well-run hemp programs in the US. It was a great fit for our team and our vision. What went into picking this site/property?
Our main farm is located in Rogue Valley, just outside of Central Point, Oregon. This valley has one of the best microclimates, that is ideal for outdoor growing, that we have seen in Oregon. Prior to us purchasing, the land was used primarily for a livestock farm for the past 20 years, which has made the soil incredibly fertile for growing hemp. Great soil and very strong water rights were some of the biggest factors in selecting this property for our operation.
Is the goal to produce biomass for others to utilize or will Mission Lago also develop its own products?
Our main focus and niche market is CBD hemp flower. This is really the only product we produce besides extraction material. Our grower Ethan Brown has been a medical grower for almost 20 years and is very particular about the flowers themselves as well as preserving the terpenes and structure. Our harvest process is unlike any other hemp farm, as we focus on the flower and producing high-quality extraction material (biomass) rich in CBD content, terpenes and flavor. We do not hard dry or mulch any of our product as we believe that ruins the overall quality. It takes a much longer amount of time and labor to achieve this but we have found that there is a very large CBD flower market domestically and internationally. Both markets demand a high-quality final product. What genetics are you running?
This season we are growing seven different strains. Our best selling from last year Special Sauce, as well as Elektra, Lifter, Pineberry, AC/DC, Suver Haze and Sour Space Candy. These genetics have all been bred specifically for the Oregon climate. They are typically done in the middle of September and out of the ground before the rains start to come down in October.

Do you have any notes on cultivation techniques?
We believe in building soils as opposed to feeding the plant. Our growing techniques are fully organic and we don’t use any fertigation at any of our farms. We believe by building the soils, it will allow the plant to grab what it needs year after year producing large healthy high yielding hemp.
What has been the biggest challenge in developing and running a hemp farm?
The biggest challenge is something that we stress to all of these new hemp growers jumping into the market, scalability. Scalability is the one thing that most people can’t or don’t plan for and it ends up crippling them. Anyone can grow 30,50, 100 plants but when you jump up to 20, 50, 100 thousand plants, you are now talking about “Big Ag,” not small garden farming. Making that jump in mindsets is and always will be your biggest challenge.

fter earning a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Colorado, Frogsong Farm CEO Chuck Adams spent four years with Hewlett Packard working as an accounting manager and financial analyst. The following 35 years were spent working with a variety of companies serving in a capacity as either CFO, COO or, in many cases, both. “Company sizes ranged from fewer than 10 employees and $1 million in revenue to 250 employees and $80 million in revenue,” Adams said. “About 40 percent of my professional life was spent with new start-ups.” Adams might not have had been endowed with real-life farming experience, but he went into crafting Frogsong Farm with a keen eye to detail. I wanted to know why he decided to go into hemp farming over Cannabis farming. What details about the process of hemp drew him in? “Our goal all along was to find a crop that would allow us to meet several key goals. First, it needed to be something that involved growing organically and that would allow us to improve the health of our farm with each succeeding year rather than degrading it as is so common in modern agriculture. And of course, it had to be a crop that could be grown well using beyond organic farming methods. Second, it needed to be a product that we could add value to right here on the farm. What made you get into the legal side of hemp, and how long have you been working with Oregon hemp farmers?
Behind almost every business is a savvy lawyer, but then there is hemp attorney Courtney N. Moran, LL.M.
Moran is the founding principal, attorney and counselor at EARTH Law, LLC in Portland, chief legislative strategist at Agriculture Hemp Solutions, and the president and lobbyist for the Oregon Hemp Farmers Association. Moran earned her Master of Law in Environmental and Natural Resources Law from Portland’s Lewis and Clark Law School, with an emphasis in industrial hemp. The experience led her to work directly with the Oregon Department of Agriculture to build the foundations of the Oregon Industrial Hemp Program as we know it. Moran continues to impress as she helps implement hemp law at a state level and national level in Washington, D.C.

Tell me more about your arrest outside DEA headquarters for planting hemp seeds, and harvesting hemp plants in a cage in front of the White House? \ In 2012, I participated in a direct action protest to urge President Obama to take action in support of hemp farming legalization. I harvested seeds from hemp plants, and pressed oil from the hemp seed, while locked in a cage in front of the White House. I had a loudspeaker and signage with me in there, and spoke to the gathering crowd and Obama beyond about the need to legalize this crop in the U.S., and the outdated and misguided drug policy that made industrial hemp illegal in the first place. Eventually, the cage was cut open by firefighters and I was arrested. We feel this protest helped spur the issue of hemp legalization into the national dialog, and direct the attention of Congress to this issue. 2012 was the year we really began to see movement at the state and federal levels to implement hemp farming legislation. Dr. Bronner’s helped fund and coordinate the hemp industry’s battle to defeat DEA’s regulations by winning HIA. V. DEA in 2004. How did that help prepare for the 2018 Farm Bill to exist today? In the HIA. V. DEA legal battle, which we won back in 2004 in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal government was forced to accept the legality of importing, manufacturing, and consuming hemp products. This was a huge step in the effort to legalize hemp farming, as this ruling protected the existence of the consumer market for hemp products in the U.S.— the largest consumer market for hemp products in the world. This set the stage for the hemp movement to make progress in the coming decade, by establishing legal separation for industrial hemp from marijuana, working with states to setup hemp farming research programs, and working with Congress in the current Farm Bill that will remove hemp from the Controlled Substances Act entirely.

What are your thoughts on the 2018 Farm Bill, and if it passes, how would it affect the company? Dr. Bronner’s definitely supports the passage of the Hemp Farming Act in the 2018 Farm Bill. We feel that this versatile and sustainable crop should be legal for farmers to grow across the country, and should be regulated as a commercial crop by the USDA, just like wheat and other crops. Federal legalization of hemp would allow us to source hemp oil from American producers, rather than import it from Canada. Passage of the Hemp Farming Amendment in the Farm Bill would provide opportunity for economic growth in our rural and agricultural communities, and would offer a new, sustainable raw material for use in many industries— including home construction, textiles and fashion, bio-plastics, food and supplements, and automobiles. At the time, only crops grown for research and experimental purposes was legal, so this crop did not supply hemp oil for our products. However, we are committed to sourcing hemp oil from American farmers as soon as the crop can be grown organically and to the scale needed to supply the millions of bottles of soap we make annually! When did the company begin to use hemp oil and what products use it? Hemp oil was added to our Castile Liquid Soaps around 2000. All our soaps, lotions, shaving soaps, balms, and hair care products, contain hemp oil. The only body care product that doesn’t contain hemp, is our hand sanitizing spray. However, we are committed to sourcing hemp oil from American farmers as soon as the crop can be grown organically and to the scale needed to supply the millions of bottles of soap we make annually!

In the spirit of the Hemp Issue, we want to shine a light on the decades of activism from David Bronner, owner of Dr. Bronner’s Soap, a notoriously outspoken advocate for hemp. Bronner caused a stir in 2013 when he was arrested outside DEA headquarters for growing hemp seeds — a radical act of protest designed to challenge the Obama administration to legalize hemp farming. Dr. Bronner’s was among the first companies to bring hemp to the market on a national production scale. Beyond David’s personal activism, Dr. Bronner’s is one of the largest personal care companies certified under the USDA’s National Organic Program, and the company pioneered the use of 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. After growing 1,100 percent in the last 15 years, Dr. Bronner’s is committed to becoming a zero-waste operation.

This is all changing rapidly and we expect to be sourcing certified organic American hemp oil that meets our quality specs very soon!

A blunt is a big, loud way of consuming a conspicuous amount of Cannabis. While the idea of a blunt was first born out of the necessity of smoking in busy cities like New York, it’s now become a sort of nostalgic and interesting way to celebrate Cannabis in this new era. The High Hemp wraps are a bit HIGH 8/10 drier than the Juicy J wraps, making a little harder to roll with. Once HEMP them we got the hang of it, though, we found them easier to stick. High Hemp claims to not use artificial ingredients and this certainly came through in and even, almost unnoticeable smoke. Their hemp is sourced from their own farm and organically grown. We liked that the wrap burned evenly all the way through, and High Hemp’s packaging shows off.

How did you start this project and get involved in the Hemp movement? Conceptually, it started by looking for non-toxic insulation materials. I had an older home that needed to be better insulated and had other upgrading and maintenance work, so I started researching and that’s where hempcrete came up. I began studying it and one thing led to another and ultimately it was too compelling to not use. What is your timeline for the rest of the project, and how did it begin?
I started with a house that was majorly remodeled in the late 60s, a mid-century modern design, and I began by tearing out the west side of the house and making it a full two stories. We took it down to the studs (the frame) and retrofitted it with hempcrete. The house is all framed in now and the roof and windows are in, but I still need to insulate the ceiling and am doing research on how to use hemp there. We will be making more hempcrete next summer, putting stucco on in the fall, and I’m hoping that in a little over a year I’ll have the house complete. What makes hempcrete so special as a building material?
There are so many advantages, as a natural and renewable building material. It’s fireproof, moderates mold, is carbon negative, energy efficient, non-toxic, insulates naturally and will last for centuries. Our environment is in crisis and we’ve cut down too many trees. We need something that grows fast and dumps oxygen into the air and provides materials we can renew yearly. How is hempcrete made?
Basically, it’s hydrated lime, which is 90+ percent calcium, and hemp hurds (which is the inner core of the stalk) and a clay additive that is specially formulated from old European plaster masters. You don’t have any of the petrochemicals and the lime you use is the main ingredient in your bones and your teeth and in fact is made from ancient bones and seashells deposited in ancient oceans. Its using nature’s regenerative abilities, harnessing and using them the way that she built. What type of hemp do you use?
There are cultivars that are better for making hempcrete, but the part of the plant being used is hurd. So you can still process and gather the plant material and fiber, so if you are growing for the other beneficial uses of hemp like CBD or fiber this is actually the agricultural waste.
How do buildings impact climate change? Buildings are responsible for half the carbon represented in climate change. The operational cost to heat and light a building as well as the embodied energy, the shipping, and manufacturing growing of all materials you use — when you put those two together, they are responsible for almost half the energy we consume. We’re going to rebuild our built environment in 30 years and it’s an opportunity to slow down the amount of carbon in the atmosphere with carbon smart buildings. What has kept hempcrete from being used more broadly?
Because the building materials have ironically been illegal to grow and our codes aren’t very adaptable to innovation, and our institutions are slow to change. Another big barrier in Washington is that the rules for growing hemp benefit big business as usual and border on immoral. There are farmers that want to grow it but can’t pay the fees or a background check. You don’t need a background check to grow corn, why should a DUI or drug bust keep you from growing a certain crop? Another is the federal .3 percent THC limit on hemp, which makes it so that you can’t save your seed and sets the stage for monocropping and keeps research and development limited. What is your call to action for society?
Our institutions aren’t responding fast enough to critical issues. When something presents that is obviously a better way to do things but has so much cultural resistance, we have to confront that and be courageous and be free in who we are and find security today for our children and grandchildren tomorrow. I was glad to see Bellingham had rules and codes that allowed a little experimentation, as long as the homeowner is willing to take on the liability and risk.
Because you have documented and held workshops to teach people about hempcrete, will you be doing more of these events?
I had a couple workshops this year and people really appreciated the opportunity to do that. We want to offer that again next year so people can learn how to use it while we are building it. The young men who built and did the work are looking to build careers out of this, as their livelihood, and they are looking for projects and other custom homes to build. How does it feel for you to get to build your dream house?
I feel really privileged to do this. It’s been a big commitment, my life savings and a few years of my life, but it’s also the kind of project that can be very satisfying beyond building my FOLLOW ALONG personal residence. I hope to use the house to have events and educational opportunities in the future.

EnviroTextiles was founded in Glenwood Springs, Colorado in 2002 by Summer Haeske and Barbara Filippone. Filippone, the company’s president, has been at the forefront of sustainable textiles, hemp legalization, product development and international trade for nearly four decades.
Having worked in over eight countries and developed more than 100 hemp and natural fiber fabrics, she is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on natural fiber development. Summer Haeske, the company’s co-founder and VP of sales and marketing, has been working with her mother, Filippone, for over 20 years assisting in all aspects of the company from its original foundations, to new product development, current inventory management, marketing, logistics, and more. Oregon Leaf was fortunate enough to catch up with them to learn more about EnviroTextiles and the company’s future.

How and why was EnviroTextiles formed? EnviroTextiles was born after many previous hemp companies and brands, where I had to first start by creating fabrics for us to use for our finished products. I was a fashion apparel designer and came from many generations of natural fiber textile development. Once we had the fabrics, I knew we needed to create a supply chain so other designers could incorporate these truly special fabrics. So Enviro was actually my second hemp fabric focused company to then build more supply and demand. At this time my daughter who had grown up around each level from production to retail was of age and we started EnviroTextiles together. What products and services does Envirotextiles offer?
Today we offer Hemp fabrics for any designer needs. We now have multiple types of fabrics for them to choose from, offering 100 percent hemp, hemp/silk and hemp/organic cotton blends being some of our top sellers. We offer over 100 different hemp and hemp blend fabrics at little or no minimum order to encourage designers to try them out, or custom manufacturers to be able to offer them to their clients. We also offer custom development and full package private label for just about any soft good product you can imagine. Does Envirotextiles produce or process its own hemp? With textiles, it all begins with the fiber. In order to maintain quality standards and know we are offering the most natural and healthy products to the market, it requires us to work closely with the farmers with all aspects of processing - all the way down to the finishing or final product. If it wasn’t for us producing our products, they would not exist. What’s the most exciting aspect of federally legalized hemp?
The opportunity to finally again be growing hemp in the US is giving us and many companies the ability to start producing at home. Farmers need drought resistant and sustainable crops, and the people and the planet need more natural fibers. It’s illogical to think we have had to fight for the right to a solution when it’s as simple as planting a seed. What’s the biggest hurdle the company is working on clearing right now? We have to start from the ground up and be certain of the direction hemp will go for our nation. Right now, there is no way in the US to make a truly natural hemp fabric. There are only synthetic factories that can take the hemp and turn it into chemically processed toxic viscose. There is also no labeling law that requires them to identify it as viscose hemp. We are taking the steps to create a viable and healthy future for hemp in the US. The re-pioneering of the process is happening now and we are achieving exactly what we hoped for. We have now proven the concept for hemp composite materials and fiber coming right out of Colorado. Hemp in the US is about fixing what was wrong and establishing a clean and sustainable future for many industries, our people and happens to be kind to our earth all at the same time. emp is one of the most versatile crops on earth. It can be used in an infinite variety of applications: as a powerful fiber for cords and ropes, in clothing and even construction. The most lucrative use for hemp – as a food source. Hemp oil and seeds are an incredible superfood. They’re high in Vitamin E, fiber, protein and are chock full of Omega fatty acids—specifically, in a 3:1 ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6. This is the ratio that’s wwidely considered to be optimum for the human body. If that didn’t convince you, cooking with hemp oil can also help lower your cholesterol, improve pesky skin problems and help with digestion. Here are a few ways you can incorporate cooking with hemp into your diet.

ADD IT TO A SMOOTHIE Turn that pre-workout smoothie into a superfood concoction with the addition of hemp oil. Since hemp contains all 20 amino acids, including nine our bodies can’t produce, this combination is a no-brainer. Tart berries like blackberry or cranberry are great at masking the strong herbal notes.
USE HEMP SEED OIL IN SALAD DRESSINGS Hemp seed oil doesn’t really want to be heated up. It’s best consumed cold pressed or at room temperature, making it a great herbal addition to any salad dressing. Mix it in with lots of bright citruses and something sweet for a well-balanced dressing that’ll brighten up any salad. Honey mustard, miso and tart kinds of vinegars are all great additions here.
SPRINKLE THE SEEDS EVERYWHERE. Hemp seeds are a great way to add a bit of texture to your meal. Throw them onto salads, work them into a pesto or even transform them into hummus. Your body will thank you later.

When did you start growing Cannabis and when did you transition to hemp?
We started growing Cannabis in 2003. We started growing hemp in 2015, the first year it was federally and state legal. Why did you decide to breed hemp genetics over THC-dominant genetics? We stayed out of the adult-use THC market because it was very apparent that it was destined to crash due to overproduction. The reality is that Oregon is a prolific Cannabis exporter, but home to a very small number of people (Seth’s Ph.D. dissertation was on the political economy of Cannabis and provided the first in-depth analysis of Oregon Cannabis consumption and production.) Seth was teaching the first Cannabis policy course at Oregon State University right after Measure 91 passed (legalizing the adult use and hemp production) and the 2014 Farm Bill (legalizing hemp) went through. Upon close inspection of both, we realized that there was more promise in the emerging CBD market and that some of the plants we had developed for the medical market might qualify as hemp. We received Oregon’s 3rd issued hemp license in March 2015 and started the grand experiment. What hemp genetics did you start breeding with and why? For hemp production, we started farming with a clone developed for the Oregon medical market. This plant was originally derived from a type II variety (equal parts CBD and THC) and we bred out the THC through inbreeding, testing, and selection. When we moved to a 63-acre field the next year, we knew that feminized seed was the best path forward.

Can you tell us about the hemp strains and cultivars that you’ve created?
Throw out everything you thought you knew about Cannabis varieties when considering our creations. Varieties are less important than the different overarching types of plants we have invented (well-known variety names of these classes in parentheses). We bred the first high cannabinoid content auto-flowering CBD plant in 2016 (DNA, RNA) and the first early CBD varieties that start flowering shortly after solstice and finish in September (Special Sauce, Lifter, Suver Haze, Hawaiian Haze, Sour Space Candy, Elektra, Pineberry, etc.) In addition to those well-known lines, we also created the first publicly available pure CBG variety in 2017 (Stem Cell CBG). We are finishing field trials on our newly developed pure CBG auto-flowering varieties and “early” pure CBG lines. Our most recent invention is 100:1 CBD to THC ratio high CBD varieties. Each variety that we create requires two unrelated parent plants, each of which must be inbred for as many generations as is possible before FOLLOW ALONG going sterile; these two lines are OregonCBDseeds.com then combined to create our F1 seed that is sold to farmers after thorough field trials. It takes us about three years to go from concept to seed in a farmer’s hand for planting.

What is your least favorite aspect of hemp breeding? The rip-off artists (breeders, brokers, etc.) who lie to farmers. What do you look for in ideal hemp genetics? Structure? Flowering time? “Ideal” depends on your breeding goals and each project is different. Our goal from the start was to develop a library of unique varieties that will allow farmers to succeed in any environment and produce any cannabinoid. Every year we get closer to that goal.

2 apples, cut in quarters, core removed Lemon juice 4-6 tablespoons peanut butter 1-2 tablespoons canna-butter, softened Mini marshmallows
Place the quartered apples on your work surface. Drizzle with lemon juice to prevent browning. It tastes good too. In a small bowl combine the peanut butter and canna-butter. Carefully cut a section out of each apple quarter. You’ll be making a V, and removing the inside pieces. Divide the peanut butter into the open sections of each apple. Press the marshmallows into the peanut butter, making the teeth look as good, or as bad, as you desire. It gets a little messy, but probably everyone will be too stoned to notice!

WHITE CHOCOLATE GHOSTS Makes about 16, 2-3 inch ghosts
CANNABIS FINGERS Makes about 18 fingers • 1 pkg. refrigerated sugar cookie dough, room temp. • 1-1½ cups flour • 2 tablespoons canna-butter, room temp. • 18 blanched whole almonds* • cup strawberry seedless jam
• 1-12 oz. bag white chocolate chips • 1 ½ tablespoons canna-butter • Chocolate Chips, Red Hots or Skittles if your ghosts are large
In a large mixing bowl combine the dough, flour and canna-butter until you can no longer see the flour. Chill for 30 minutes.
In the top of a double boiler, over gently simmering water, melt the chips, 7-10 minutes. Add the butter and stir until combined. Remove from heat.
On a floured work surface divide the chilled dough into 18 pieces. (you can keep some dough in the fridge while working). Roll the dough into finger shapes. Make indentations in the fingers with the back of a butter knife. Don’t go all the way through.
Place a piece of parchment on your work surface. Using a spoon pour the chocolate into ghost shapes. Keep it around ¼ inch thick, but don’t make it even, it ruins its charm. I feel like I’m making very loose triangles. You may think you failed but forge ahead, as soon as you place the eyes you should feel good. You’ve got ghosts.
Place an almond into the top of each finger. Press down. Bake the cookie fingers until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes. With a tiny spoon, pastry bag or toothpick drizzle a bit of the jam around each almond fingernail. Boo.

FTER ENDURING a lifetime of mottled, wet crutches, it’s a pleasure to find out that one brave soul out there has finally tackled the problem head-on. Hamilton Cannagar has partnered with Bull Run Craft Cannabis to create a riff on a traditional blunt made using a hemp wrapper and corn husk filter. The corn husk filter is, amazingly, locally sourced and revolutionary in the way it affects the experience. It’s very sturdy, meaning it won’t wear away after a few tokes. It adds a subtle tastiness to the Cannagar itself, a slight sweetness that compliments whatever Bull Run flower (Certified Kind, of course) lies inside. The spiral design ensures that no product slips through the crutch, resulting in a cigar-like experience that yields a prolonged yet infinitely cleaner hit. It’s a sign of a quality product made well, one that is finally worthy of the term “craft Cannabis” thrown around by brands so often. The process behind the Cannagars is a labor of love. Each one of these miniature cigars is formed and pressed several times in order to fully draw out the moisture of the plant. Flower is continually added as the Cannagar endures repeat pressing, culminating in an end product with a deep green hue that’s full of flavor. The hemp wrapper allows the flower to burn more slowly and evenly while the crutch keeps everything nice and steady. It’s the kind of intensive process that makes smoking these such a luxurious experience.
