weather all across the amazing Pacific Northwest! I hope you’ve gotten a chance to enjoy the outdoors, the clean air and water we all cherish, and the opportunity to share time with loved ones. For me, the summer is always like a blink and it’s gone, but always full of good memories. Here’s to a warm and festive September, and hopefully as fall settles in, our national mindset can take a big breath of chill. And hopefully a toke. What really stands out to me from this summer is our country’s battle against hate. So I chose to use this space to share my thoughts, instead of talking about how great this issue is [don’t worry, it’s awesome]. So here are my two cents: Hatred, racism and bigotry have no place in our country, and as a Cannabis community we need to be vocal about social injustice. Anyone who has smoked pot prior to legalization knows what it feels like to live in fear for a choice. Those being targeted by hate groups don’t have the luxury of choosing their skin color, sexual identity or religion the way we THE CANNABIS COMMUNITY chose to smoke pot before it was legal. The Cannabis community IS DIVERSE AND COVERS is diverse and covers all walks of life, and we can send a message ALL WALKS OF LIFE, AND to the world by leading with love — Cannabis is safer than hate. This message also works against prohibitionists. Earlier in WE CAN SEND A MESSAGE the month, I was told that I was endangering families smoking TO THE WORLD BY LEADING a bowl in a music and bar district in Bellingham, Wash., while others around smoked cigarettes and drank heavily. A simple WITH LOVE — CANNABIS IS smile, a peaceful offering of information, and a parting message of SAFER THAN HATE. “marijuana is safer” can be enough to change a mind, and a choice that might lead someone to pick up a pipe and let go of fear or misinformation. Further, I want to state my belief that using the first amendment defense to spread messages of hate is not acceptable in our democratic society. As an independent publisher, I have followed the free speech arguments carefully, and have come to a simple conclusion. We must be accountable for our words as well as our actions, and as a country we need to demand this from our citizens and our leaders. We must not let hatred win. Since Cannabis first came into my life, I have always believed it had the power to change the world. And this is a direct way for us as users of a safer plant to spread truth, light and as Bob Marley said, an herb “for the healing of the nation.” Thanks for reading the Leaf, and sharing our hard work with those who need enlightenment about the plant we all love. —Wes Abney

Trump Calls New Hampshire A ‘Drug-Infested Den’ Both of New Hampshire’s U.S. Senators lashed out at Donald Trump on Aug. 3 after it was revealed that Trump had called the Granite State “a drug-infested den” during a telephone call with the president of Mexico. “I won New Hampshire because New Hampshire is a drug-infested den,” Trump said to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, reports Greg Miller at The Washington Post. The Post got transcripts of Trump’s calls to several world leaders. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Sen. Maggie Hassan, both Democrats, were angered at Trump’s boorish characterization of the opioid crisis in

their state. Sen. Hassan called Trump’s comments “disgusting,” reports the BBC. “@realDonaldTrump’s comments about New Hampshire are disgusting. As he knows, NH and states across America have a substance misuse crisis,” Hassan wrote on Twitter. “Instead of insulting people in the throes of addiction, @POTUS needs to work across party lines to actually stem the tide of this crisis,” Hassan wrote. Republican Governor Chris Sununu quickly responded. He issued a statement simply saying, “Mr. Trump is wrong. It’s disappointing his mischaracterization of this epidemic ignores the great things this state has to offer.”

Oregon Marijuana Demand SkyrocketED For Solar Eclipse Oregonians had one of the best views of the recent total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. About a million people visited the state in order to view it — and it seems many of them wanted to buy legal weed during their visits. Local news stations reported Oregon Cannabis dispensaries saw a spike in sales ahead of the eclipse. “Tourism already to Oregon, plus an eclipse, is doubling up,” Mike Drevecky, an employee at the Little Amsterdam Wellness Center in Portland, told The News Review. “And that means customers are doubling in our doors. I mean, we’re swamped this morning alone.”

Weedmaps Brings Pro-Cannabis Billboards To Michigan Weedmaps, the “where to find marijuana” app, is bringing pro-Cannabis billboards to Michigan during an ongoing petition drive trying to put marijuana legalization on the 2018 state ballot. The “technology and marijuana discovery service,” based in California, is buying 22 pro-pot billboards in the Lansing area, 12 more in Ann Arbor and six in Metro Detroit as part of its campaign, also targeting six other states plus Canada, reports The Detroit News. The billboards feature statistics showing unchanged youth use, increased tax revenue, theft reductions and other positive developments in states that have already legalized. Five different versions

are running in Michigan, which is currently creating and implementing new medical marijuana rules. Weedmaps says the goal is “to provide communities with credible, verifiable facts about the benefits of legal marijuana.” “As Michigan residents consider a marijuana legalization petition, and changes to dispensary regulatory requirements go into effect throughout the state, there is a lot of marijuana misinformation out there,” a Weedmaps spokesman told The News. “So we think it’s important to share and talk about the benefits, underpinned by research, regarding marijuana. We want Michiganders to be informed.”

A Cannabis plant received first place at the Ninilchik State Fair on the Kenai Peninsula this summer. Grower Ethan Hanson of Soldotna grew the blue-ribbon plant, Ultimate Purple, on his homestead in Clam Gulch. Hanson told KRSM Radio that his medicinal plant “tastes like grapes when you ingest it.” He entered his plant under the Herb Division, Class 19 – Other. The Fair Board will discuss whether they will accept Cannabis plants in the future. The Southeast Alaska State Fair claims to be open to Cannabis admissions. The Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska’s largest statewide fair, has no plans currently to accept Cannabis plant submissions. VOTE ‘NO’ ON CANNABIS PROHIBITION BALLOT MEASURES

Campaigns are running against prohibitions in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, the city of Fairbanks and the North Star Borough. There are three different ballots pushing back on Cannabis on the October ballot, meaning three different attempts to bring back prohibition in parts of Alaska. Alaska Marijuana Industry Association (AMIA) is working hard to get people registered so they can vote “no” on the ballots in their areas. The AMIA warns of certain groups misrepresenting the ballot initiatives. If citizens are in favor of the responsible sale and adult use of Cannabis in Alaska, then they strongly urge a “no” vote on all of the ballots. Do not be confused by any misinformation that may be disseminated by those looking to reverse the positive progress, job creation and tax revenues produced by the Alaska legal Cannabis industry.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote letters to the governors of Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington in response to a letter they sent him back in April. According to The Cannabist, Sessions stated in the letter to Alaska’s Governor Bill Walker and state Attorney General Jahna Lindemuth that there was “regional and state data depicting serious public health and safety issues arising from marijuana legalization, and Alaska was no exception.” Sessions cited a 2015 Annual Drug Report by Alaska State Troopers that he claimed “raises serious questions about whether marijuana ‘regulatory structures’ will be effective in your state.” Prior to receiving Sessions’ letter, Lindemuth sent a letter emphasizing marijuana regulation as a place where “states should take the lead,” pointing out that “traditional police powers remain with state governments.” In her letter, Lindemuth asked that things remain status quo, and for the DOJ to “maintain a policy substantially similar to the guidance articulated in the 2013 Cole Memorandum.” That memo from Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden to U.S. attorneys in the western United States stated the federal government would “not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for medical use of marijuana.”

VOTE

NO ON PROP #1 NO ON PROP A IN THE KENAI IN FAIRBANKS IT’S TIME TO GET VOCAL about legal Cannabis in Alaska, and consumers and business owners alike need to raise their voices and political right to vote to ensure that freedom and legalization is respected. Only a few short years into the legalization experiment, Alaska is once again battling reefer madness with two major votes to repeal legal Cannabis coming up in October. Proposition A in Fairbanks seeks to outlaw the operation of Cannabis cultivators and retailers within the city limits, and Proposition 1 in the Kenai Borough would ban any Cannabis businesses inside the borough limits and in unincorporated areas. Both bans would shut down currently operating Cannabis businesses and neither will do anything to stop the production, sale or consumption of Cannabis in the respective areas, regardless of whether the activity is legal or illegal. People like smoking pot and they will continue to do so regardless of legality. Bans like this only prevent

legal, taxed and regulated businesses from operating, to be loud and proud, to show that Cannabis is safer not those existing in the black market. Alaska has than alcohol, and that it is a positive contributor to done a great job of regulating and controlling the our communities through jobs, tax revenue and a safe legal end of the Cannabis marketplace, and the prochoice for recreation or medicine. tections that exist are robust and can be counted on We must not allow the ignorance of the few to by concerned citizens to keep the market operating dictate the needs of the many. We must not allow with transparency and safety controls. Cannabis legalization to go backwards, and we must The irony of any repeal vote for Cannabis is that not allow laws to be passed that would end tax-payit accomplishes nothing to stop peoing businesses and create situations ple from smoking or growing pot. It is time that we as an where people can once again go to jail And often, the people pushing the industry and Cannabis for growing or selling a plant. bans are doing so based on irrational consumers speak up and I am calling on everyone who reads say no to the ignorance, this to be vocal: Stand up for what is views — from the religious “do as I hate and fear driving say” crowd to the D.A.R.E. believright and what is legal, and stand firm these no votes. ers and those who still believe the in the face of ignorance by sharing the racism-driven cry to ban Cannabis truth. Cannabis is a safer choice, and almost 90 years ago. Cannabis should not be banned where it has already It is time that we as an industry and Cannabis been voted in as a legal industry. Vote no, and please consumers speak up and say no to the ignorance, share this message with family and friends heading hate and fear driving these no votes. It is time for us into the October vote!

Keep Cannabis legal in Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula and Vote No to protect our freedoms and tax-paying businesses!

FIRST CANNABIS EXPERIENCE? My first Cannabis experience was smoking before going to watch “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America” at a theater! That was my first experience ever smoking and being in public, being extremely high while trying to concentrate to watch this movie that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I definitely loved it though. It made the movie so much more enjoyable than it would be sober. It was some happy weed, some giggle weed.

Each month, the Alaska Leaf crew meets to select one special budtender that stands out above the rest! Tell us who you think should be the next Alaska Leaf Budtender of the Month and why they deserve it!

DAYLYN MILLER

HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT CANNABIS FOR EACH CONSUMER WHO WALKS IN?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUDTENDER AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

People always ask, “what’s the strongest you have?” I ask them, “what’s your activity?” So I can judge what kind of smoke you will want or need to make it more enjoyable. Whether chill or active, there is a type of weed that will make that experience better. I’m all about the effects, the taste, the smell. When I product test for the store, I do it clear headed to get the full effect of that particular strain, so I can judge on my experience to pass on to the customer. I also listen to customers about their experiences, and combine the results to share with others. On a personal note, I had a customer come in who was hearing-impaired who wasn’t able to get full help, so I’ve started learning sign language to assist the hearing-impaired community. We have a customer who has helped me with that, and now more folks are coming by. I want to help people as much as possible!

I started when Dankorage first opened on Dec. 22, 2016. It was really awesome to be able to do this not only because it’s legal but to be able to assist the public in their needs, whether medicinal, recreational or trying it for the first time. What I really love is seeing people who have never been into a shop before walk in with big grins. You can tell that they are enjoying their experience, and it makes me really happy to help provide that for people.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONSUME? My favorite way is any way I can, really, but I usually dab. I also smoke some herb throughout the week, out of either an Incredibowl pipe or a nice good bong. I vape, dab, smoke, eat edibles, though I can’t do the store edibles because they’re too weak. I’m a 100mg THC minimum-doser to start for edibles.

FAVORITE CANNABIS STRAINS, EFFECTS AND TERPENE PROFILES, PERSONALLY? For dabbing, Babylon is bomb. I love their stuff, and have not been disappointed yet. Their shatter or cake batter, I can’t express it enough, five stars. For flower, right now I really like Green Life. Their smoke is grown really well, and a lot of their buds are so beautiful, with green and purple colors and trichome clusters. So far with them, my favorite strain is the Susitna Sage — I’m a big sativa smoker — it’s got that great sativa energetic, creative and focused head high. I really like cerebral highs. I also like their Blackwater for indica … something that you can smoke to calm down and help you get a good night’s sleep.

16/sept. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

“I like to play hockey in the winter, and I’m also an avid video game player, which is one of the reasons I love to smoke.”

WHY DO YOU LIKE WORKING AT DANKORAGE?

budtender of the month Daylyn Miller, who goes by the nickname “Woo” while budtending, is a passionate connoisseur who loves trying new strains and collecting experiences to share with consumers new to the Cannabis world or top shelf smokers like himself.

I love the people I work with. I love the owners. They are amazing and really care for us employees. I also love helping people have a great experience, not having to go to someone on the black market. Instead, they can go into a safe, clean environment that’s very accepting. I love Dankorage. It’s more than what I thought this was going to be.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? In summer I’m out 4-wheeling or camping, and I like to spend as much time as possible with my daughter. I like to play hockey in the winter, and I’m also an avid video game player, which is one of the reasons I love to smoke. Too many favorites to name, but anything that has a good storyline. I play all genres, and the weed definitely helps me play better.

The Chugiak range is across the street.

how did it feel to finally make it and beat the “No” vote in the Valley?

We had our grand opening on March 25, and it went great! We had lines out the door for the first two weeks; it was really cool. It was a lot of hard work leading up to getting open, but I feel like the rewards have already validated all the work I did for the last two years without compensation. All the work put into this business is equal to the reward of being open and serving the community.

What is it like getting to legally sell Cannabis on a daily basis?

It feels awesome! The first three months I spent every week looking for products, we were running out constantly, which was really difficult and stressful. Just in the last month things have changed, and two weeks ago was the first time people came to me to sell instead of me searching. It’s getting smoother and easier for us, and we get to focus on helping our customers instead of worrying about having products to sell them.

Is it getting easier to source products? how do you buy?

It was crazy in the beginning. It seemed like I always had to hunt for products, and now people are calling me! I’ve turned down product for being too expensive because I don’t want to charge too much, and turned down product for quality. It was a good feeling to say “no,” instead of “gimme, gimme” because we needed products. We try to pick products with quality first. The price matters, but at the same time, I don’t want someone to go home and be upset about quality. It comes back to: I want people to have a good relationship with Cannabis.

Who are some of your favorite producers to sell?

Lately I have been smoking the Sherbert Cookies from High Tide Farms. The April’s Lemon Dreams cookies from MoMo’s Bakery even just as a cookie are great, but as an edible they really are amazing. Right now I really like Green Light Supply. Great Northern is also bringing great quality products right now. The 9 Pound Hammer from Green Life sold out quick and it hit really hard. MoMo’s edibles are amazing: They sell the best, they taste and look great, and are made from concentrate rather than butter, so it doesn’t have the Cannabis flavor. It’s like buying actual treats. We also get calls all the time for E-Blunts and Leaf Chews from Einstein. The public has really liked those products.

What has the community reaction been like? Do you get a lot of regular customers in addition to the tourists?

The community has been great. I haven’t had anyone making negative comments, and while I’m sure we aren’t perfect, the response from the community is amazing. Even people who grow their own still want to come in and try nugs from the professional grows. The amount of local regular customers we have is a blast. We

have some guys that come in almost daily for a gram or two to talk and engage. It’s nice to see the wide variety of Cannabis consumers that come into the store, and we are becoming friends with the community.

What is the key to green jar’s success?

The staff is key. Without the people we’ve hired, we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are. We have two assistant managers who are helping with design work and photography, and we found people that had skills we didn’t have and collected them into the team. I can be good at only so many things, and then I have to start collecting people that are better than me. We take care of our employees as much as possible, because I feel like we should all be winning. Our store is a home, and that’s what I see for Green Jar in the future. It’s such a good feeling to provide a job I wish I could have had when I was younger, and I want to open more stores to have more positions open to everyone.

You, your wife Bailey (a co-owner) and a third partner all work as budtenders. What is that like and how do you balance it all?

The third owner is Christopher Farrif — Bailey and Chris knew each other since childhood, and he’s the one who got me my job on the North Slope. When we found out about this industry opportunity, we all moved into the same house to save more money, and today we all live together and work at the store. Work never ends! We usually have one or two of us at the store and one person at home with kids. It takes all three of us to run our household and business at the same time.

what is your goal as president of the MVCBA and what is your role?

My main goal of the Matanuska Valley Cannabis Business Association is trying to get the public educated and to make sure that Cannabis businesses come together, get along, and communicate well. We can help the regulations and local government move along so we have a healthy industry not only for ourselves but for the community. It takes a lot of people to make sure that happens and the more people that show up, the better. Now that we see more and more grows in the valley, I’m sure the association will grow. It’s fun to see new people coming and help them not have to feel the stress of figuring it all out like we did.

What are your goals for the future and vision for the industry?

I really feel like the better the industry does, the better view the public has of Cannabis, and the better my business will do. We’re trying hard to make sure everyone finds success. I really want the industry to be a community win. I want employees to win, other businesses to win, and if those people win, it’s most likely I will win as well. I want to gain and not take from our community, and so far, it’s far exceeding our expectations!

OREGON CONVENTION CENTER • JANUARY 17-18, 2018

The FIRST national trade show exclusively for marijuana retail and dispensary owners! WWW.THERADEXPO.COM 425-656-3621

NATIONAL MARIJUANA RETAIL & DISPENSARY EXPO

WHY ATTEND RADEXPO?

Most retail and dispensary owners don’t bother attending today’s cannabis trade shows for a variety of reasons: Admission prices are too high; many vendors are targeting cultivators; the public are allowed in; they lack focus; the same speakers talk about the same tired subjects at every event, etc.

RAD Expo is different. • RAD Expo is a business-only event that is 100% focused on the retail side of the industry.

• Attendance is free for licensed retail stores and dispensaries, as well as qualified applicants in states not yet issuing licenses. • All exhibitors will have products and services aimed at making retailers more profitable. • Our speakers will have serious retail and marketing experience. • It’s a national show featuring businesses from all over the U.S. • Portland, Oregon sits squarely in the middle of the biggest legal marijuana market in the world. (60 million people in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.)

GOLDEN GOAT SHATTER THIS FEATHER-LIGHT AMBER SHATTER

is a cross between Hawaiian Romulan and Sweet Island Skunk, blending sativa-dominant genetics with a powerful and long-lasting high. Golden Goat Shatter is light and fragile but also remarkably stable

and getting some onto a dab tool isn’t tough. There’s not a lot of smell out of the bag, but the true flavor is revealed when the oil is vaporized. At first touch to a nail, the oil melts away, pouring out golden waves of smooth vapor with flavors of honey, tropical fruit and a gentle earthy finish. The vapor is light on the lungs and very smooth, which comes from great starting material and a proper extraction process. It’s evident that a lot of care went into the oil, and it makes dabbing it all the more pleasurable. Effects start in the mind and melt through the body like a warm glove sliding over a hand. The mind slows down initially with heady waves of euphoria and a content stoned feeling. The body slips into a calming body high over the first 20 minutes, which then settles into a more alert and psychoactive 75.42% upper feeling. The effects are extremely powerful in THC onset, and the Golden Goat continues to deliver after the initial peak with an hours-long mellow 0.26% sativa buzz that is great for any time of day. CBD Give this shatter a try and experience the flavor-packed high for yourself by stopping by AK Frost, and look for more products by Isidore and AK Rime on the shelves there!

ur Bubba Kush #4 (BK4) is a pure indica strain that is very heavy hitting and not recommended for daytime use, as you may find yourself glued to the couch. The very strong hash flavor is complemented by a sweet, smooth exhale. Our BK4 has a tantalizing aroma that can’t be ignored. This Bubba Kush phenotype will leave you extremely relaxed from head to toe, releasing any stress you may have. During growth, like any true Kush, Bubba Kush #4 has extremely far node spacing. This particular phenotype is incredibly purple from the fan leaves to the flower. She finishes right at eight weeks with a nice short stature, well suited for sea of green (one of our growing methods). With BK4, it’s quality over quantity, which is always our main focus.

HOW DID CANNABIS COME INTO YOUR LIFE? Cannabis came into my life when I was really young and super hyperactive. A friend’s parent introduced me by a cookie, and it helped greatly, but I didn’t become a consistent user until I was 18. My dad also gave me my love for Cannabis.

WHEN DID IT BECOME A MEDICINE FOR YOU? I had a stroke at age 19, while I was four months pregnant, and the medicines given to me after my stroke kept causing me to have seizures. My friend’s dad had heard Cannabis helped seizures, and suggested to try using Cannabis. Because of that, I haven’t had a seizure in years, and it was what really showed me the power of Cannabis as a medicine.

WHAT DID THE STROKE DO TO YOUR BODY? I went blind from the stroke until right before my daughter was born, when I started getting some of my vision back. That was my first real experience of my body becoming my enemy, I wasn’t fully diagnosed with my true illness until this year, and it really explained a lot to me. I have Chiari Malformation Type 1; basically my brain is too large for my skull, and it’s been bound in pressure my entire life. I have 6 millimeters of my brain herniated out of my skull and into my spinal canal, putting pressure on my vertebrae. It’s extremely painful and causes a variety of issues.

HOW DOES YOUR CONDITION AFFECT YOU AND HOW DOES CANNABIS HELP? If I didn’t constantly dose myself through my food, I wouldn’t be able to function in day-to-day life. When I get stressed even with minor things, my brain starts to swell, and if I get really stressed, it swells and tries to herniate more. My speech becomes compromised, sometimes my left side of my jaw doesn’t work, my vision will disappear, or my hands or legs will stop working, and that’s where edibles come into a big play for me. Breathing becomes hard, and to obtain the right amount of oxygen, edibles really help. I also have a genetic issue where my blood cells are not normal sized and cannot hold enough oxygen, and so I’ve been told that I have the blood oxygen level of an 80-year-old with asthma.

CHEF BOMBSHELL Anchorage patient Michelle DelaPeña

has built a following for her Cannabis cooking, but she’s using the herb for her health as well!

HOW HAS LIFE BEEN LIVING WITH A DISABILITY AND DOES IT AFFECT RELATIONSHIPS OR WORK? I don’t let too many people know because I have such strong will. Ever since my stroke, I have felt like a different person and all I’ve wanted is to be myself again. I’ve had people treat me different or not believe I can do things, and I am always trying to prove to myself and others that I own my disabilities. It’s hard for people to believe that, so I make my own way.

WHEN DID YOU START COOKING AND WERE YOU ABLE TO CONTINUE AFTER YOUR STROKE? I’ve been cooking my entire life! I come from a big family. Our family gatherings look like a U.N. meeting. We have every nationality, and everybody knows how to cook from their native country, so I got to learn a whole lot of styles from women in my life. Because of my condition, I wasn’t able to go to culinary school, so I learned through direct experience and have worked in many restaurants. I’ve been told that I am extremely adaptable, and because of my disability I am really hard on myself about remembering tasks, but it helps in the kitchen because I’m like a robot, a machine. I do it the same way every time.

HOW DOES COOKING MAKE YOU FEEL? It was my escape ever since I was a kid, and it puts me in a happy place. After my stroke, it was something that kept me calm, and I never lost the ability to do, which I am super grateful for. It also makes me feel accomplished. I’ve had people make me feel horrible about my disabilities, and been called bad names, but when I cook I feel powerful! Like no one can stop me from what I’m doing or bring me down because I rule! People say they cook for passion and I do have that, but a good amount is my vanity too, because I’m addicted to hearing, “ooh this is good.” I’m the type of person who will feed you and stand in front of you and wait for a reaction. I stand by my hashtag: #GetFedWellByBombshell.

HOW HAS INFUSING FOODS CHANGED YOUR MINDSET ON COOKING? In my food, I only use organic flower that I grow so we can control the product. Being able to take the flavor of CB out is something I am really proud of being able to master. If there is a flavor, it’s a whisper and then it dissipates. Back when I started, it was so overwhelming. I wanted them to know I was cooking with it. Now, it’s flavors I choose to highlight.

HOW DOES YOUR FOOD HELP OTHERS? I love making people smile. To sound corny, smiling’s my favorite, and I love making people smile and knowing I put people in a good mood with my food! I help a lot of cancer patients, a lot of vets, gotten a lot of people off synthetic meds, four people off heroin. I’m really proud of what I’m

IF I DIDN’T CONSTANTLY DOSE MYSELF THROUGH MY FOOD, I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO FUNCTION IN DAY-TO-DAY LIFE.

doing. I help people get the right dosage of Cannabis they need, in a tasty food form, so they are taking less synthetic meds and sticking with all-natural. Alaska doesn’t have a medicinal market, and that’s where I operate, because I want to really help people. I have people show up crying to me because they can’t afford their meds at recreational shops, and we need to provide for their needs. It’s supposed to be here to help people, not just to make a buck off of, and the rec system is not fair to the people who are truly sick and in need. It bothered me when Alaska chose to go recreational instead of medical. We should have started with medical and helping the sick first.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE OF COOKING? I really can make anything and everything you can imagine with weed beautifully and you won’t taste it, but you’ll feel it. Personally, I’m a meat-and-potatoes girl, although I was a pastry chef for a while and I make amazing desserts. I prefer savory foods for cooking and for infusing, and I’m not a big sweets person, although in the beginning of my Cannabis cooking, that’s where I started. Now I concentrate on healthy and savory foods, because eating Cannabis shouldn’t give you diabetes, so I cook a lot of healthy food. I make some amazing jerkies and delicious gourmet chips … a full line of condiments … a bunch of different salad dressings, herbal vinaigrette, Caesar, ranch, cucumber Asian dressing with a citrus touch. I do bread-dipping oils. I love making roasted veggies for people … a lot of protein plates. I even do medicated meal plans for people who work out to help with the burn afterwards. My favorite thing is to make fish. Alaska has the best seafood, so I take advantage of that. People freak out over my Halibut Olympia.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A PRIVATE CHEF? WHAT ARE YOUR DINNERS LIKE? Private dinners range from 6-30 people, and the guests choose the menu and I make it happen beautifully. Most important for me is that everything has to be beautiful — has to look good and taste good. The whole time I’m cooking, I’m singing. It’s dinner and a show! I will entertain, educate and feed you.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART AND HOW CAN PEOPLE REACH OUT TO YOU? Food is love, and I love what I do! I create the mood to make sure I can put love on the plate. I want people to feel my energy. That’s why I sing while I cook! Create your own happiness and you’ll make others around you happy, too. People See more of her can get in touch through my Facebook or Instagram. Cannacooking I am talking to people right now for events in Arizoon Instagram na, Washington and California and Denver, and I’m @ IM M I C H E L L E 78 always looking for more people to share and cook for!

COOKING HERB 75 RECIPES FOR THE MARLEY NATURAL LIFESTYLE

By CEDELLA MARLEY, 2017, 240 PAGES, $30.00

I

t’s hard to stand out in the current crop of Cannabis cookbooks — but “Cooking With Herb” has no problem doing exactly that. None of the others are written by Bob Marley’s daughter. Wellness guru Cedella Marley grew up in Jamaica experiencing the restorative and spiritual properties of ganja firsthand. Now, she shows readers how to incorporate Cannabis into their kitchens. The book invites readers into Cedella’s family kitchen for a taste of the vibrant Jamaican culture that is essential to her lifestyle. Each recipe features one of three herb infusions — canna-oil, cannabutter, or canna Vanilla Extract — to help readers cook party-friendly fare such as Grilled Jerk Chicken with Tamarind Barbecue Sauce and Sticky Sweet Potato Pudding, “the Marley Way.” While hearty, comforting Jamaican classic dishes are a vital component of the book, Cedella also highlights ways to incorporate Cannabis into a natural beauty and wellness regimen, with scrubs such as Pumpkin Face Scrub and an Aloe-Hemp Exfoliator. More than just a stellar collection of psychoactive recipes, Cooking With Herb is filled with practical information, beautiful photography and Cedella’s captivating stories of growing up with her famous father. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by [Cannabis] — for me, the sweet whiff was as common as the aroma of Mommy burning the ginger and curry together in coconut oil for one of her famous onepot stews,” Cedella writes in the introduction. “From the time Daddy was a small boy he always respected nature and the healing properties of plants.” Cedella is the CEO of Tuff Gong International, the record label founded by her father in 1965. She also directs the Bob Marley Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization.

I WAS NOT WELL AND WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS UP. Katie Z is alive and back to work thanks to Cannabis oil after a lifelong battle with painful Ehlers-Danlos syndrome What was your childhood like, and when did you first start realizing that you were dealing with illness and issues that were different from other kids?

I was always the one sick, getting hurt and having to sit on sidelines. I played sports, soccer, volleyball, you name it i played it, did marching band, trumpet and French horn in the Portland Youth Philharmonic. But I wasn’t able to participate as a kid fully, and we didn’t know why. We went to doctors and they thought it was growing pain. Through childhood, nobody connected the dots, they just said, “oh, it’s just Katie.” Did this continue to follow you as you grew up?

During prom, I passed out on my date because of pneumonia. I fell on the dance floor. I was so sick overall that they petitioned for me to get a tutor at home and I graduated a year ahead of my class.

What did you do after you graduated?

I got my first apartment at 17, moved out and tried to live life and get a job and go to school, but my plans didn’t work out as expected. In 2008, I got really, really sick, nonfunctional completely, and started having seizures, dropping to the floor, concussions. I was not well and we didn’t know what was up. What did the doctors say?

I finally went to the East Coast because I’d seen all doctors out West [who] didn’t know what it was, saying I was crazy and had anxiety. So I went to the East Coast and saw a renowned neurosurgeon, and in 15 minutes he said, “you’re not crazy, it’s a genetic disease called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.” I just cried, bawled, to know I was right that something was wrong. But at 22 my disease had already progressed so much he didn’t think there was a lot he could do. He wanted to do neck surgery immediately, but I didn’t want massive surgery like that after everything I’d been through. You’re also living with Intracranial Hypertension?

They call it the suicide disease, because no pain meds can touch it. It’s like shoving a high-pressure water hose in your skull, and Cannabis feels like putting cold water on a fire … it’s crazy how much it helps. And with my EDS it affects the collagen in between joints and bone structure, so people experience dislocations and a wide variety of issues that basically make life unlivable. Did you feel like brain surgery was too much?

After undergoing brain surgery in July 2013

42/SEPT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

At that point, I’d already had knee surgery, gall bladder surgery, bladder stones, bladder surgery,

so I had been through a bit and I was done. I was wheelchair-bound, couldn’t walk, 220 pounds, not healthy in any way shape or form. He advised me to go back and get my green card, and there wasn’t a whole lot more they could do. Shortly after this, I had a seizure in an MRI machine. They gave me too many medications. My breathing stopped, and I ended up for a month in a nursing home after a 3-day coma. It was hell. It was awful. What was your mindset like at that time with everything you were going through?

I was suicidal. It was the most depressing thing I’d ever been through. I had very little will to live, was very depressed, with no hope, no opportunity. I couldn’t work, go to school or commit to anything. The disease limits you on what you can do and how much you want to try. EDS feels like being stabbed by a knife every day but you get used it. Did you get a medical card and did it help?

I got my green card in Washington and tried to navigate the system, but it was hard and I couldn’t find a grower or reliable meds. It was a nightmare, so I moved to Oregon, got on their program, found a grower and continued trying to live life while using Cannabis just as a smokable flower. What happened next?

July 2013 — that was brain surgery —the first one to put a shunt in to relieve spinal pressure. Terrifying. It was absolutely terrifying. A chance you can die, greater for someone in my space, but anyone risks going blind, deaf or death or stroke during brain surgery. So it’s pretty scary. But I was so sick, having vertigo so badly, I was desperate for relief,

In and out of hospitals constantly, Katie was depressed and felt hopeless.

WHEN PEOPLE LOOK AT US AS PEOPLE AND NOT AS A DOLLAR SIGN, THAT’S WHEN WE WILL SEE REAL CHANGE HAPPEN. and I had a morbid look on it that at least if I died I wouldn’t hurt anymore. The first surgery went OK, but then I got sick again. We learned the shunt was infected because of a surgeon issue, and I had three more surgeries in 36 days. They pulled my internal shunt and gave me an external one. I had a bag of fluid I had to carry around for 12 days with my $15,000 sterile brain straw that was actually sticking out of my head. How were you coping?

I was smoking pot at that point. I would leave the hospital, go off the floor with the bag, go outside into the streets and smoke weed, right there on the corner in my gown and everything. Cops would drive by but nobody would do anything to me. I had a posse of patients coming down, we were all sitting on the corner smoking in our hospital gowns with devices attached to us. It was quite a scene. What happened when you got out of the hospital?

Cannabis saved the life of this Tacoma, Washington MMJ patient

I almost lost my apartment and had to sell some stuff to raise funds. A guy wanted to buy my computer, and we started talking health and he said, “I make full extract Cannabis oil.” I was like, “you’re a weird Craigslist dude.” I legit laughed at him! I said, “I’ve seen the best doctors in the world, what could you offer me that they couldn’t.” He said, “a chance.”

WE MUST CONTINUE TO MAKE IT NORMAL. IT’S THE ONLY WAY WE CAN CHANGE THIS.

Did you take the chance and accept his offer for Cannabis oil?

At that time I had a Do Not Resuscitate order [DNR]. No more treatment — if I’m not breathing do not help — and he comes over and has me rip the DNR and says, “I’ll give you oil for free.” I was like, “I’ll try for a week and get another DNR when this doesn’t work.” But what ended up happening is I slept, which is really hard after brain surgery. It’s the only way to heal, and I slept, and I had more energy, and my appetite started coming back and my vision and hearing got better! I kept going down the road not knowing where it would lead, and I ended up getting better, having fewer seizures, no headaches and functioning at a higher level. That’s amazing! So you started on a treatment program?

It took a lot of oil. I started at 2-3 grams a day, and we worked on a specific blend for me. My doctors were blown away. I went from weekly appointments to being cleared to work. You still had a long path to recovery though, right?

I still had the shunt in at this point, and it was still causing problems. I had to learn to get my sense of direction back. When you wake up, you don’t think about how many steps it takes to get ready. To break down those tasks, I had to relearn those. My brain was so scrambled. Brush teeth, squeeze toothpaste, push cap back on, brush teeth for a minute, all those things that come in an instant were hard. I am still in recovery mode overall. I had knee surgery in November. Fourteen total surgeries including six brain operations. You’re a vocal patient advocate. How do you feel about our state’s MMJ system?

We don’t have one. That’s my problem. Without funding, I can’t do anything in Washington, and that’s honest truth. We need money and damn good lobbyists and a different political structure. Washington is still pretty corrupt and it’s unfortunate that we are in this place of fake legalization. I would like to see homegrown rights, removing the registry and real medicine in the recreational shops. Do the recreational stores meet your needs as a patient?

There’s nothing there for me. I could never afford to medicate through 502. If I have to take three grams a day, $180 a day in cost, that’s $5,400 a month with no guarantee it will work, and I also need edibles and topicals. My body needs Cannabis and I can’t stop taking it. What I really need is my own garden, but I don’t have the ability or time or money to do that, so it leaves me stuck. Do you feel that your life is dependent on Cannabis for health?

I’m reliant on oil every day. If I stopped oil for eight days, I’m in the ICU, having pre-seizure symptoms. Can’t sleep. Throwing up. That’s all it takes. I don’t know what joints will cause problems when I wake up. I’ve had 4 dislocated ribs upon waking, dislocated shoulder, hip. To keep me functional, it takes 16 plants every three months. I’m consuming more than most people, and if people took my 0.3 grams now, they would be floored, wouldn’t be able to move, but it’s what keeps me awake. Cannabis is the only treatment for me that works. Now I am able to return to work and my bosses [in the real estate business] are supportive. How does the fear of losing access play in your life?

I’m very grateful for my meds, but I wish access could come to others, and I still worry of course about running out. I have a few months’ supply left, and when I run out we hope and pray that more oil can be made. I worry about when money runs out, what am I gonna do then? Go from building a biz to staying at home with a caregiver. That’s not a life I want. I’d rather be living. What would your message be to other patients struggling to find relief?

I would encourage patients to continue talking about it, even with the risk of losing something. We must continue to make it normal. It’s the only way we can change this. I want to encourage anyone with EDS and others that it’s possible to get back to life. Life doesn’t have to end in suffering. Do you see Cannabis as something that can heal the world?

Katie and her dog, Happy, relax at Wright Park in Tacoma, Wash. last month. Moving, working — even walking — was difficult for her just a few years ago.

44/SEPT. 2017 FACEBOOK.COM/NWLEAF

As a nation, we can end prohibition. Someone in an illegal state shouldn’t suffer and die when someone six hours away [doesn’t have to]. It’s completely barbaric. We can fix Washington but we need a lot of help. When people look at us as people and not as a dollar sign, that’s when we will see real change happen. We need people to stand up and share the truth about Cannabis as medicine.

Highlighting amazing Cannabis pioneers who helped pave the way to greater herbal acceptance.

Kevin Smith Maverick filmmaker, actor, author and comic book writer Kevin Smith is best known for his hit movies Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl. He’s instantly recognizable as the iconic character Silent Bob that he played in many of his films.

Since so much of his work features characters who use Cannabis, it may surprise you to know that he didn’t start consuming the plant until 2009. Smith told MTV in 2011 that he credits Seth Rogen (whom he worked with on the film “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) with being the person who made him into a “stoner.” Smith said that he and Rogen smoked weed in the editing room while cutting the movie, and that it helped with creativity and getting “fear” out of the equation when it came to making creative decisions. In the interview, he credits Cannabis with aiding his productivity. Shortly after this interview, he told Thrillist that “I can count on one hand the amount of times I smoked weed from birth to age 38. At age 38, I worked with Seth Rogen. That changed everything. I was like, ‘this guy is a multi-tasker. He can do a zillion things at once and he is fucking blazed all the time. He gets along with everybody and he has got no stress in his life.’ The dude is just a zen pool of calm.” Smith also talked about how Cannabis has been medicinally beneficial to him: “I don’t drink. Some people have booze. Some people have medications. I don’t have any of that shit, but weed allows me to get out of my own fucking head and out of my ass, and relate to people better.” Fortunately, that’s not where this story ends for Smith. Like your friends here at Northwest Leaf, Smith is also on a mission to normalize Cannabis for the mainstream. “I am glad that I became a stoner late in life. Age 38. I was never a fucking stoner prior to age 38. Now, I am a fucking born-again stoner. Weed is not a ‘thing,’ really. It is not. Once Colorado and Washington were legal, everybody is like, ‘oh, it is not that big a deal.’ When I was a kid, it was like, ‘fucking just say no, and it’s evil, and, fucking, it will lead to crack cocaine,’ and shit.” In 2013, shortly after early legalization in Colorado and Washington, Smith appeared on Canadian television in Toronto on a breakfast show touting his newest film “Yoga Hosers.” The interviewer posed the question, “what’s the secret of how you get things done?” With a straight face, and clear language Smith told the host, “well, I’m a huge stoner … but a productive one.” He noted that he even likes to wake and bake and regularly enjoys a “THC-managed day.”

SOME PEOPLE HAVE BOOZE. SOME PEOPLE HAVE MEDICATIONS. I DON’T HAVE ANY OF THAT SHIT, BUT WEED ALLOWS ME TO GET OUT OF MY OWN FUCKING HEAD AND OUT OF MY ASS AND RELATE TO PEOPLE BETTER.”

The one-of-a-kind film director and iconic Silent Bob actor is not so quiet about how Cannabis helps his productivity

Medusa Glass was founded by Jason Lydy, who began lampworking in 2015 after he was inspired by a good friend. While brainstorming ideas with a Pacific Northwest theme, he focused on the late summer local fruit, blackberries. Paired with a pot leaf, the ganja berry was born. Jason crafted each berry pendant pictured. The bite-sized mini rig and directional cab caps are a collaboration with Pablo Flux Glass.

SUNSET SHERBERT HOW SHE GROWS sensitive. The OG traits are right up in the forefront of

growth characteristics of the cut I’ve worked with. Slow to take off, she needs consistency in environment and delicacy and grace during transplant. But once in late veg, she becomes quite robust, producing medium-height, evenly spaced bushes that respond well to delicate and early tip topping. When worked consistently to space heads evenly, she puts off heavy bud sites of exquisite color and intoxicating smell. While I prefer the gassy, mossy terpenes that become dominant at the 70-day range and beyond, several farmers happily take her in the early 60s, accentuating the fruitier range of this exquisite cultivar.

BAG APPEAL & SMOKE REPORT much like her parental heritage, “The Sherb” takes

on an even darker range of colors than the famed GSC. She produced large, more bulbous flower sites, making her bag appeal second to none. Perhaps only a few steps below the frostiness of GSC, the range of purples, reds and blues that flow across these plump blooms makes them a gorgeous site. The scent is nothing short of intoxicating. If you are a terpene hound, this variety is the one for you. Accept no imitation; if it doesn’t have a smell like nothing you’ve ever experienced (with Gelato being the exception) you haven’t encountered the real cut. Regardless of the harvest window you choose, Sherbert boasts an unmatched fruit punch, push pop, sweet red berry scent that somehow matches perfectly with any level of the earthy, mossy, kushy punch that it sits over. The taste is all deep, earthy kush with a spectrum of sweet fruit punch flavor entirely contingent on the harvest window you chose.

EFFECTS bright, happy and still functional. One of the

many features that wins my personal taste when compared with her popular parent, is that Sherb is like a silly, confident friend to your mind where GSC is a thunderous donkey punch. I enjoy being able to sample a few different tastes of the Sherb and still be able to stay away. The muted, moss, earth and kush terps explode on the inhale and quickly translate into a soft, sweet, woody berry exhale. An alert and giggly state sets in, allowing stress to melt down the back of the neck and out of the way.

SHERBERT BOASTS AN UNMATCHED FRUIT PUNCH, PUSH POP, SWEET RED BERRY SCENT THAT SOMEHOW MATCHES PERFECTLY WITH ANY LEVEL OF THE EARTHY, MOSSY, KUSHY PUNCH IT SITS OVER.

YIELD: Medium GENETICS: Pink Panties x Girl Scout Cookies (indica hybrid) LINEAGE:

Brought to us by combining the efforts of the all too infamous Cookie fam with a grower known as Mr. Sherbinski, this hybrid is unmistakeable. By combining the over-the-top frost and bud structure of the GSC with the beauty and remarkable smell the Pink Panties brings to the table leaves us with one of the most sought-after varieties on Earth.

QUICK HIT: Rare to find and requiring more attention to grow to its full potential, Sherbert is worth the effort. When given

the opportunity to flourish, she delivers large yields of truly exquisite flavors and colors and rarely finds her way out of the headstash.
