We began pairing wine with weed in 2012 as an educational tool for the various strains and flavors present in Cannabis, and today we continue that legacy with a new round of pairings! I’ve always been fascinated by the world of wine, the thousands of varieties, and the sommeliers who can divulge a year of production or soil type from a simple sip. WE LOOK FOR On the same note, I’ve always been SIMILARITIES amazed by the people who maintain the IN FLAVOR attitude that “all pot is the same.” PROFILES FOR So we started the pairing edition of the magazine to highlight the different flavors of OUR PAIRINGS, BUT THERE Cannabis, and draw a parallel to a world that most are familiar with. Alcohol. IS TRULY NO Marijuana is safer than alcohol. I would WRONG WAY TO love to see this country shift from bars and PAIR DELICIOUS liquor stores on every corner and grocery CANNABIS WITH store shelf towards dispensaries and A TASTY DRINK. lounges, but we’re not quite there yet. But this issue, and the concept, is a great barrier breaker for people who still have antiquated and stigmatized views of Cannabis. Share with someone an amazing pairing, whether in print or in person, and see their fear be replaced by wonder - and a little face melting if you follow our pairings. We brought the heat this year! And don’t be afraid to try your own pairing at home, whether with wine, or a tasty local soda or coffee. We look for similarities in flavor profiles for our pairings, but there is truly no wrong way to pair delicious Cannabis with a tasty drink. So please share the magazine with someone new, and enjoy our annual Tannins & Terpenes issue of the Leaf!

WASHINGTON D.c.

D.C. MMJ DISPENSARIES NOW OPEN TO PATIENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY

BUSINESS

WORLD’S LARGEST POT COMPANY LOSES $1 BILLION IN THREE MONTHS Canopy Growth Corporation, the world’s largest Cannabis company by market value, reported a quarterly loss of C$1.28 billion in August, missing analyst estimates for revenue and sending shares down 10 percent in after hours trading. The losses amounted to $3.70 per share, compared with losses of C$91 million, or 40 cents a share, in the year-ago period, reports Market Watch. This quarter’s loss of more than $1 billion was due to the company extinguishing warrants related to the Constellation Brands Inc. investment. Canopy fired co-CEO Bruce Linton soon after its previous earnings report, as Constellation was reportedly unhappy with continuing large losses. CEO Mark Zebulon, while remaining at the helm of Canopy Growth, has said he expects to exit once a new chief executive is found.

WASHINGTON STATE EXTENDS LEAF DATA SOFTWARE CONTRACT Washington state Cannabis authorities have extended the contract for Leaf Data Systems, the seed-to-sale tracking program offered by Denver-based MJ Freeway, despite past glitches with the system that have cost retailers thousands of dollars. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB) amended the contract with MJ Freeway, extending it from July 31 to September 30, reports Marijuana Business Daily. But the extension requires the company to focus on stabilizing and fixing the system, after the software experienced outages in July. MJ Freeway “shall limit its efforts to performing additional stabilization of the system” and “needed corrections, if any, specific to release 1.37.5,” the contract amendment states. July’s software release and subsequent outage rendered the state’s traceability system inoperable for days. Cannabis business owners reported thousands in lost revenue.

STATES SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS WITH CANNABIS REVENUE, OR BLOW IT: REPORT

nwlEAF.COM

Patients with medical marijuana authorizations from across the U.S. can now buy their medicine at dispensaries in Washington D.C., reports WAMU. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced on August 16 that patients from 27 states can now purchase Cannabis in D.C., with four more states currently under review. “This emergency rulemaking is patient-centric,” Mayor Bowser said. “It ensures medical marijuana patients from other states can obtain their needed medicine. It will also promote public safety by allowing visitors to obtain their medicine at one of the District’s six - soon to be seven - authorized dispensaries rather than forcing them to go without or patronizing the illegal market.” Under D.C.’s medical Cannabis program, patients can buy up to four ounces of marijuana every 30 days. There are 6,079 registered patients in the city. Out-of-state patients will only have to show their state-issued medical marijuana authorization to buy Cannabis at any of the city’s six operating dispensaries.

States where Cannabis has been legalized just love the plenteous new revenue pouring into state coffers. But they’d better be careful how they spend it until the market stabilizes, according to a new report. The Pew Charitable Trust report, “Forecasts hazy for state marijuana revenue” was published on August 19. “Neither price nor demand has stabilized yet,” said Alex Zhang of Pew, explaining the report’s findings. “Only time will tell when markets have matured to full capacity.” States have, at most, five years of data on recreational Cannabis sales. The report found that early adopters like Washington state did see a spike in revenue, with Washington collecting - no joke - $420 million in its 2018 budget year. But according to the report, forecasters expect that growth to “decline steeply.” While revenue from Cannabis taxes and fees grew 277 percent from 2015 to 2016, according to the report, it climbed just 17 percent from 2017 to 2018.

CALIFORNIA WILL SOON HAVE CANNABIS RESTAURANTS Budtenders will assist the guests at the soon-to-open Lowell Farms Cannabis Cafe, which pairs farm-to-table meals with strains of farm-to-table marijuana. When the 220-seat space opens, reports The Washington Post, it will be the first of its kind, where diners can enjoy a high-quality meal and smoke a joint in public. But other restaurants will quickly follow. Restaurateurs who want Cannabis on the menu in famously progressive West Hollywood, which in 2017 approved an ordinance allowing business licenses for this purpose, will have to navigate a labyrinthine patchwork of rules, but Lowell Farms proved it can be done. “With Cannabis, we are building the boat as we’re on the water,” said Jackie Subeck, who plans to open a Cannabis spa, clinic and cafe, and serves as chairwoman of the Cannabis legislative subcommittee for the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Legal states will be watching closely. Cannabis restaurants could eventually become as commonplace as wine bars, according to some industry experts.

10 DAYS AT HEMPFEST

An insider’s look at the worldrenowned Cannabis protestival

14

It is said every year how hard Hempfest is to keep going, but 2019 has been like no other. All year has been a strategic defense from an onslaught of attacks against the organization. Hempfest may only happen for some people three days a year, but the 365 day a year business of this event has worked all year to make 2019 happen.

nwlEAF.COM

all its supplier parking, its eco site location for garbage, and subsequently use of a main road that has for 25 years been the load-in road for suppliers, vendors, portable toilets, and other service vehicles for the festival. So immediately prior, our volunteers were tasked to a whole new traffic plan, with some even becoming licensed flaggers to produce this event. The city, as always, never misses an opportunity to charge the organization for every inconvenience and or alleged damage to the park. Permitting is always over-the-top expensive, and the permit

itself only seems to arrive the day before the festival. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Control Board even cited Hempfest by name in a directive to 502 businesses, disallowing for said businesses to advertise openly at the event. While this situation was immediately rectified and restated by officials, many Cannabis vendors feared to present their businesses this year at a local and long-standing event FOR CANNABIS. But Hempfest trudges on. Through death, through loss, through obstacle after obstacle. For many years I had been a vendor with Hempfest, and an attendee more times then I can count.

I had clamored to attend the Friday VIP and rarely ever missed other scheduled Hempfest events, such as the Tokers’ Bowl or 420fest. I had volunteered in membership the last two years, but this year I took to the task of joining the core staff, along with continuing vendor communications at Hempfest Central throughout the year. Joining the core staff at Hempfest requires ten days on site. Even though some radically dedicated folks put 12-15 days in surrounding the festival, most people only see Hempfest as three days of partying and

consumption. In previous years as a general volunteer, I had only put in the weekend. However, core volunteers enter the park the Monday before Hempfest and continue until the Wednesday after. Long before the vendors load in their food trucks, or glass blowers fire up their equipment, a group of some of the hardest working people start to assemble stages, command centers, security posts and the kitchen. After everyone has had their chicken in a waffle cone, bought their glass and heard their speakers/ bands of choice, the “Hard Core” as they’re known begins to tear down and clean up. My family plans for Hempfest like most families plan

for a road trip to Disneyland. We take time off work, we budget food and gas to be able to spend 10 days in absolute protest of the illegality of Cannabis worldwide. I’ll admit, it was inspiring to learn and experience how far some travel to volunteer - walking, caravanning, bussing and flying into Seattle from all around the nation. Hempfest is a one-of-a-kind event like no other in the world, and on this 28th year of this protestival, I learned what it was to have patience and meet people where they are at. This year I did 10 days of Hempfest for the first time. Never in my time in Cannabis culture or the Cannabis industry have I come across a group of people that work this hard. 2019 has been a particularly hard year for Hempfest. Not only by way of legal permitting and over arching advertising restrictions - the organization was wracked by the deaths of multiple members of the core staff in the previous year. Every year it seems another few faces are missing from a scenery I once took for granted. These stages are named after the fallen and this soil is hallowed ground. It is more than just the ash of every joint smoked, it is the memory of the people who worked, loved, envibed, danced and sang here. With fewer volunteers and grief and loss amongst organizers, Hempfest trudges on as it always will as a patchwork of some of the most extraordinary individuals, all coming together. We show up like a village to provide the most well known and loudest platform to abolish prohibition and end the incarceration of our people for this sacred plant. I am proud to have worked with so many genuine and dedicated people. Sharon Whitson is the most adept and proficient leader I’ve ever worked with, by far. During fest in a matter of one minute she was juggling two phones, a radio and countless individuals all saying “Sharon...” Hempfest Founder Vivian McPeak’s tireless fight to keep Hempfest alive is inspiring and his tenacity so few between the community now. These people and all the volunteers who often thanklessly work to the bone for the end of prohibition should remind all of us; We are in this together.

CASCADIA GARDENS director of production ERIN LAPSANSKY is the Director of Production at Cascadia Gardens in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. Lapsansky oversees “basically all the day-to-day activities in both the garden and in [concentrate] processing.” She is responsible for executing everything that a thriving Cannabis producer-processor requires. With a background in rhizosphere biology, Lapsansky is perfectly suited to crafting the best possible growing environments and preserving plant genetics. We spoke about her research, her evolving job and how the essence of a plant is concentrated into “The Terps.”

SEPT. 2019

WERE YOU ALWAYS INTERESTED IN CANNABIS? WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE PLANT? I wasn’t always interested in Cannabis. I am interested in doing things that nobody else is doing. That’s why I like research so much. I competitively paddle outrigger canoe, not many people do that. I do the stuff that few people do, that’s what I like do to. There’s no sail on my boat, and there are six people in it. DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE CULTIVARS TO WORK WITH? ANY LEAST FAVORITES? I love/hate The Bear. Nobody else has anything like The Bear. I don’t even know the parent genetics because it came over from medical when we picked this. We were the first license to take over a license

a study for Mammoth P, as well as a confidential company in Mexico. I want to be using the best, safest products at all times. I try to switch it up while keeping to the organic-based, consistent output mentality that Cascadia has. Because my degree is specifically in rhizosphere biology, we rely heavily on beneficial microbes. Just for plant health overall, we use beneficial microbes in the soil. If there was any kind of a pest issue, we would use beneficial microbes to control that pest issue. Basically these plants evolved outside in this really dynamic environment, and everybody has brought them inside and tried to make this really consistent, really sterile, unnatural environment. My plants are pretty hearty, because I try to mimic the outside environment that they evolved in. So, they grow in soil, and it’s kind of dirty sometimes. The beneficial mites come with the soil that we purchase. We recycle it to organic farmers in the area after one use. There’s some organic amendments that I use, but It’s pretty much just the soil and the microbes doing their thing.

from somebody else. We took over the license on 4/20, four years ago. She’s hard to grow, and she’s drifted a ton since I got here. We had to take her out of rotation for awhile. I was able to select for vigor in veg and keep selecting, and now she’s come back a bit. So we’ll be seeing her again soon. YOU DON’T SEE PEOPLE TOO OFTEN, IN THE WORLD OF LEGAL CANNABIS, SPECIFICALLY, THAT ARE WILLING TO PUT IN THE WORK TO PRESERVE GENETICS IN THIS WAY. MAD PROPS! I cloned that girl in veg. I would grow 30 plants, take two clones off of each, and then select the top 30 of those plants. And then I would take two clones off of each again, and select the 30 that looked the best. ARE YOU DOING ANY CANNABIS SPECIFIC RESEARCH? The room that we’re going to photograph, is actually my Research & Development room, and so I do complete randomize block design research studies, mostly trialing different products. I’m trialing two different cultivars in there right now, just to see if I want to put them into rotation. I don’t have a trial currently running in terms of products, just the cultivars. I have done

“I WANT TO BE USING THE BEST, SAFEST PRODUCTS AT ALL TIMES. I TRY TO SWITCH IT UP WHILE KEEPING TO THE ORGANIC-BASED, CONSISTENT OUTPUT MENTALITY THAT CASCADIA HAS.”

CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND WITH PLANTS? At Gonzaga, my research specifically was to take a terpene from mint, and put that terpene into roses. I’m into genetic modification, which is very controversial, but I love it. This research was to make roses create their own natural pesticide. So, this terpene deters aphids. It was (E)-ßFarnesene, which is a sesquiterpene, which means it’s a 7-carbon terpene. You can move this gene, hopefully, into the rose genome, which would make it smell like mint so aphids wouldn’t eat it. You wouldn’t have to spray neem or worse things. They would produce their own pesticide, essentially, that made aphids not want to be on them. It also attracted ladybugs, which are predators of the aphids. I was also trying to put this gene into potatoes for the same exact reason. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TERPENE? No. They do smell good. We use the Cannabinder stamp on our packaging. Tom [the founder] and I met at a CannaSTEM meeting at Heylo Cannabis. I thought his product was pretty cool and we connected. CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT CASCADIA’S TERPENE PROJECT? So The Terps are just incredible; We use a CO2 extraction technique that captures the exact smell, flavor, and feeling from our flower. We say that they are “completely true to the flower, a highly-concentrated profile, balanced the way nature intended.” Over 70 grams of my flower goes into every single milliliter of The Terps. They are great for the consumer in a lot of ways, of course being natural is one of those, but also because we add them back to all our extraction products, so you can get a full flower experience in a concentrate. If you like the way The Jack flower makes you feel, then you will get that same feeling from The Jack cartridge or The Jack capsules. Cascadia-Gardens.com

SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO BONNIE@C3.LEGAL Managing your business where it counts

I get so many questions about traceability and inventory control. After all, the state requires that all Cannabis licensees maintain a traceability system. But that doesn’t simply mean that you purchase an inventory management software such as Biotrack, Greenbits, or WeedTraQr and use it at your business. No, traceability means that you must have your own internal processes and procedures that ensure proper traceability of Cannabis products. This means that you must maintain control of your inventory and create systems to effectuate that purpose, such as inventory audits, inventory intake procedures, proper storage, and effective employee training. Inventory Intake Inventory is pretty simple. It goes in and it goes out. This means that the first thing your inventory control system needs is to set proper intake procedures in order to ensure you actually received the product the state believes your received. All of us are human, and miscounts happen. Double-check all inventory before you receive it in your traceability system.

22

BRING IT TO

BONNIE >>DEAR BONNIE, I HEAR THAT THE LIQUOR AND CANNABIS BOARD IS AUDITING CANNABIS BUSINESSES. WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE SURE WE ARE PREPARED?

nwlEAF.COM

G

ETTING AUDITED by any state agency can be very stressful. You should definitely seek legal guidance in communicating with government agencies and assisting you in the audit. Every state audit is different. Every state audit has different potential consequences. The Employment Security Department may look into your business’s expenses and payroll. Labor and Industries will want to hear about the classes of your employees. The Department of Revenue will be very interested in your tax records. Most government audits can result in a fine or harsh penalties, which in some cases you can pay over time. But the WSLCB audit can threaten the very existence of your business upon first offense. You want to be prepared. Aside from general compliance issues, if I had to give only one piece of advice on preparing for prospective audits, it would be to maintain proper records. Recordkeeping is a huge requirement for Cannabis licensees in Washington. WAC 314-55-087 governs record keeping requirements and it is lengthy. It requires a licensee to keep business records for five years on the business premises for all things purchasing, banking, employment related, pesticide application, inventory, transportation, samples, POS systems, audit trails - the list goes on. Maintaining proper records is not only required, but it is also essential to preparing for an audit. If there are gaps to be filled during the audit process, your records will document everything your business has gone through. It helps you piece together the puzzle that is your business. But without proper records, you don’t stand a chance. Every audit can be stressful. You’re going to want help and you’re definitely going to want all of your records. Maintaining proper recordkeeping is the best thing you can do for your business to prepare for a government audit.

SEPT. 2019

Proper Storage You have to stay organized. You can’t just throw your Cannabis product in the back room and forget about it until you need it. Keep your Cannabis separated by category, vendor, strain, weight, and especially lot number. Make it easy to find for busy budtenders. You can’t risk confusing some products with others, or some lot numbers with others. Your inventory will run amuck. Audits Audits are actually my favorite part of You have to stay inventory control. It’s the time when organized. You your business can check to see how effective your control systems are. Audits can’t just throw reveal the holes in your systems and the your Cannabis product in the employees who cause those holes. If items are being sold as a different item, back room and forget about it or an employee didn’t count inventory upon intake, audits will show when and until you need it. where these errors occurred and helps your business prevent the mistake from reoccurring. Audits take a lot of time and energy, but it is the only way to see if all of your efforts are fruitful. Personally, I think traceability is another example of this state’s over regulation of Cannabis. Neither alcohol nor cigarettes require seed to sale traceability like Cannabis does. But alas, the state requires Cannabis licensees to maintain essentially flawless traceability. I hope one day we won’t have to do this but until then, form inventory control protocols, store your Cannabis properly, and audit your inventory to track your progress. Inventory is where it counts. FUTURE FOODS THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER BECKONS

nwlEAF.COM

24

For years the mantra has been “Hemp: food, fuel and fiber.” In the last few years “medicine” has been added to that refrain, thanks to CBD. I sincerely believe that in the not too distant future food will take center stage. As a vegetarian (fin and feather, no mammals) for the last 48 years, I’m a firm believer in the multiple benefits of a plant-based diet. There are several trends that point to hemp taking its rightful place at the dinner table. Sure, only about 5% of Americans self identify as vegetarians, but the Impossible Burger is about to change that. While there have been plant-based meat alternatives before, nothing has grabbed America’s attention like the Impossible Food’s animal-free burger. Vegetarian burgers aren’t new. In fact, they turn up on restaurant menus with increasing regularity. None have become truly mainstream, but they aren’t odd or rare or cause for finger pointing anymore. Remember the last episode of Seinfeld in 1998? Probably. But do you remember the ad Gardenburger ran for 1.5 million dollars? In the end it didn’t work out so well and Gardenburger is now owned by Kellogg’s. What makes the Impossible Burger different? Heme, the chemical that gives red blood its color. Impossible Foods developed a technology based on leghemoglobin, which is found naturally in the roots of soy plants. They created a genetically engineered yeast WHILE THERE HAVE BEEN and used a fermentation PLANT-BASED MEAT process to make it in bulk. ALTERNATIVES BEFORE, Animal fat is replaced by coconut fat, textured wheat NOTHING HAS GRABBED AMERICA’S ATTENTION LIKE and potato protein. But the real question: THE IMPOSSIBLE FOOD’S How good is the Impossible ANIMAL-FREE BU RGER. Burger? Delicious!

SEPT. 2019

How do I know? Because this vegetarian was in Wisconsin on a hemp-related business trip and ordered an Impossible Burger. I was taken aback by the color when it arrived. It was gray like lamb and after I bit into it, I was sure it was meat. No big deal - it wasn’t going to kill me and truth be told I really, really enjoyed it. I went home convinced I’d eaten my first mammal burger in decades. It wasn’t until I shared the story with my son Bryan, and he laughed and told me it really WAS vegetarian, and that my track record was intact. The scientific research is overwhelming that red meat isn’t necessarily the best food source, especially in large quantities. Research states “...long-term consumption of increasing amounts of red meat and particularly of processed meat is associated with an increased risk of total mortality, cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes, in both men and women.” The American Heart Association’s website recommends “trimmed lean meats, no more than 5.5 ounces, cooked, per day”. They also suggest “meat substitutes such as beans, peas, lentils or tofu in entrees, salads or soups”. They go on to highlight foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Sounds like hemp to me.

Asking someone to change their diet isn’t easy.

It often means changing lifelong habits and learning new ways to cook. Americans love red meat and nothing exemplifies that more than a burger. The fact that the Impossible Burger will soon be available nationwide at Burger King is potentially a huge cultural shift. Think about it - pull up to the drive-thru window and order a plant-based burger with fries and a Coke. And Burger King isn’t the only mainstream chain embracing a plant-based burger. BUD’S GARAGE

Ty Horton moved to the Northwest from Chicago and became a budtender after learning more about the role of Cannabinoids and terpenes. Horton is a fan of blunts with RSO and hash oil added, and using Cannabis out in the open in his day-to-day life, wherever the mood should strike. & WHAT D R E W YOU TO T HE CAN NAB I S I N DUST RY ?

Weed. I wasn’t looking to get into the industry at all, I just kinda rolled with the vibe because I didn’t know shit at first because I’m from Chicago. On the the south side, you get brown weed generally and you got to know the man to get the good shit. Then I get to Seattle and see that the weed is prettier, greener, a lot more potent, no sticks, no seeds I loved it. This got me wanting to know more about it. So, because the guys I hang around with are knowledgeable, I started learning about deeper aspects like the cannabinoids and terpenes. At that time, I was coming into Bud’s Garage regularly and getting to know the staff. Then they said, “Why don’t you bring us a resumé?” And that was it.

SHOP REVIEW

HERBS HOUSE AMBIENCE

This may be the only Cannabis shop that feels more like home than your own home. With walls laden with a revolving lineup of unique original art, you’ll want to either chill-ax next to the fireplace, or hang on the deck for a tasty respite from the busy day. Herbs House isn’t just a vibing place to pick up the fruits of nature’s labor, but also to take a deep breath and remind yourself that prohibition is soon to be a thing of the past.

PRODUCT SELECTION

32

While it’s very important for the staff at Herbs to keep their style of old school throwback intact, they’re very pleased to offer a contemporary product selection, too. With a vast array of edibles and concentrates, you’ll find a wide selection that covers every aspect of the Cannabis rainbow. But what they pride themselves on most is the quality. Although you can get your inexpensive preroll no problem, with brands like Olala, Puffin Farms and Doc and Yeti, you’ll see that the menu is curated with the connoisseur in mind.

HISTORY & VALUES Community is vital to Herbs House’s optimistic mindset, as long-time friends Sharon Jacobson and David Sloan banded together to open the doors in 2015. The two of them work in tandem to create an atmosphere of equal trust and respect toward the plant and their team. In fact, Dave is in the process of building a second house on his property - with Hempcrete! (Stay tuned for a story in the October Hemp Issue).

BUDTENDERS & SPECIALS There’s no reason to go anywhere else when you’ve got the option of a daily $4.20 deal. And Herbs specializes in a blowout bin that includes every category on the shelf. Couple that with the instant positive greeting you get the moment you walk through the door, and you’ll see that when you’re looking for a Cannabis buying experience that encompasses what Seattle is all about, there is no substitute for Herbs House. With Sam and Charlie at the helm, you can’t go wrong with the community feel of Herbs House.

nwlEAF.COM

QUICK HIT If what you’re looking for in a Cannabis retail shop is something indigenous to the Ballard area, you’ll dig the funky, artsy feel of Herbs House. It’s the legacy that separates Herbs from the pack, as they’ve been steeped in the Seattle area Cannabis scene since well before the recreational market took hold. Whether on your way to Golden Gardens or perusing for the right restaurant, catch the vibe of this natural, Stoner Owner certified positive oasis, and brighten up your late summer day.

PEANUT BUTTER BREATH SEPT. 2019

Grown by MR.GRIMM NOTHING SAYS BACK TO SCHOOL TIME LIKE PB&JS, SO WE DECIDED TO REFRESH THE CLASSIC WITH THIS HEADY VERSION OF THE DANK STRAIN KNOWN AS PEANUT BUTTER BREATH.

FIRST TOKES DELIVER A BREADY AND NUTTY INHALE THAT EXITS WITH EXQUISITE SMOOTHNESS AND A LIGHT SUGARY SWEET TANG.

Worthy of its namesake, this beautiful flower is rich and creamy with nutty and woodsy notes, and a light herbal-citrus-haze hiding in the background. It’s one of those jars you continue to smell long after the bowl is loaded, teasing the nose with flavors yet to be revealed. The buds are smaller and dense but cured with care, featuring a pleasant stickiness and a brighter citrus-lemon-gas flavor when snapped open. Darker green with splashes of purple coloring, each conical nugget is frosty with trichomes and lightly covered in red hairs that look nearly edible when loaded into a bowl. First tokes deliver a bready and nutty inhale that exits with exquisite smoothness and a light sugary sweet tang. Truly delicious and light on the lungs, a light hazy-nutty mouthfeel lingers on the palate for a few minutes after a good sesh. Effects are calming initially and begin in the body, moving out from the core and into the extremities and mind with a balanced hybrid high that is chill while still being fun. We enjoyed the Peanut Butter Breath on a weekend morning and also at the end of a long work day, making it a versatile and tasty high (19.4% THC) that you won’t regret enjoying. Much like a PB&J, it’s good any time of the day! Mr. Grimm is a tier 2 Cannabis producer in Buckley that is focused on flavors. With a unique strain lineup and a clear passion for craft Cannabis, we recommend asking for them at your favorite retailer! TERPENES 101

TANNINS & TERPENES ISSUE nwlEAF.COM

40

SEPT. 2019

Terpenes are produced by the trichomes of the plant - the same place where THC is produced, as a way of producing resins and protecting the plant from pests. These aromatic compounds are found all over nature and the plant world, and are the source of essential oils and many naturopathic medicines. Luckily for us, they provide powerfully beneficial effects on the mind and body when combined with cannabinoids. There are more than 120 types of terpenes that have been found in Cannabis, and they are largely responsible for what we view as expressions of strains, the taste and flavor, and the highs we associate and enjoy with our favorite Cannabis. The Entourage Effect

Beyond great flavor, terpenes actually assist cannabinoids in entering the bloodbrain barrier, and providing the high that we love. This is a synergistic relationship on a chemical level, and is why the plant has the effects we associate with strains. As you’ll see below, the common terpenes found in Cannabis have diverse effects and flavors. These terpenes exist in nature through fruits and herbs, and have been used therapeutically in natural medicines for thousands of years. This is where the science of natural terpenes meets Cannabis, all in a beneficial form known as the entourage effect. Every time you use Cannabis, the entourage effect is responsible for delivering your high.

Why terps matter and why THC percentages don’t. Without terpenes, Cannabis would be very boring. This is why asking for high THC is a useless way to purchase Cannabis. A strain with 15% THC and high terpene levels will certainly provide a stronger, more dynamic high than a basic 25-30% THC strain that has been cultivated only for the chemical - not the effects. This is most evident when comparing concentrates, like distillate versus solventless, hydrocarbon or CO2 concentrate.

For patients and connoisseurs alike, terpenes and flavor are what define purchasing at the dispensary. Luckily Alaska allows for deli style Cannabis sales, which means consumers can and should get their noses into jars! Smelling different strains is the best way to tell what your body is needing, and what meets your personal taste preferences. When smelling five to ten strains, usually one or two will smell or feel better, and often one or two will not. This is more than simply smelling a flower though! When your body smells Cannabis, the terpenes take effect aromatically, much like essential oils, and deliver signals to your body before you ever smoke the bud. Listen to your body, follow your nose, and ask for terpene tests and strain genetics/legacy before worrying about the THC percentages. Chances are, it really doesn’t matter.

Common Terpenes & Powerful Effects Myrcene The most common terpene found in Cannabis, this terpene has earthy, musky and kush notes, and is known for sedative effects. Also found in mangos that enhance its effect, Myrcene offers anti-inflammatory benefits and is helpful for chronic pain and helping with cancer treatments as a supplement.

Limonene The terpene limonene is also found in citrus fruits like oranges and tangerines. Limonene is a potent anti-fungal and anti-cancer agent, helping naturally reduce the presence of carcinogens in the body. It’s also a mood-elevating terpene that relieves anxiety, along with a signature lemony fuel flavor.

Linalool Kushy, spicy and floral, Linalool brings a lot of flavor to different strains. Also found in lavender, mint, cinnamon and coriander, linalool is a powerful sedative and great for pain, depression, arthritis, seizures and insomnia.

Caryophyllene Spicy and peppery, this terpene is found in black pepper, cloves, and other natural spices like basil or oregano. The only terpene that bonds to CB2 receptors, which is how the body takes in cannabinoids, this anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving terpene has also been noted as a potential helper in reducing alcohol dependency.

Alpha/Beta-Pinene Responsible for the piney flavored strains we love, these twin terpenes are bronchodilators and can help with respiratory function and oxygen circulation, and have great promise for asthma. They also have anti-inflammatory effects, and have shown benefits for arthritis, Crohn’s disease and in cancer treatments.

Humulene The most common terpene found in hops, a sister plant to Cannabis, its woodsy and citrus flavors are found in lemongrass, jasmine and tea tree oil. This unique terpene also has antiparasitic properties, is an antioxidant, and brings antimicrobial and antifungal properties that also directly counteract cancer growth.

Terpineol Blame this terpene for the couch lock effects. This relaxing terpene is floral with notes of anise and mint. In addition to relaxing effects, it’s also an antibiotic!

Others... As mentioned above, there are over 100 other terpenes commonly found in Cannabis, and all have medicinal effects! When looking at a test result that contains terpenes, look for these common elements, and remember that a small amount goes a long way. While the percentages will never be as high as THC - and we wouldn’t want them to be - the effects of terpenes are truly the best part of consuming Cannabis!

GUAVA COCKTAIL - 2 honeydew melons, cubed

-2 oz. liquor of choice per drink -Dash fresh lime juice

nwlEAF.COM

1. Blend the fruit. Combine the fruit with the lime juice, purée until smooth, about 1 minute. 2. Freeze purée in a shallow pan for 30 minutes. 3. Pour the purée into a 9x13 inch metal pan. The purée should be about 1/2 inch deep, although it’s OK if the purée is deeper. 4. Freeze the melon mixture for 30 minutes. 5. Scrape granita with a fork and freeze again. Take the pan out of the freezer. The purée should have begun to freeze, especially around the edges and top. 6. Scrape the mixture with a fork and return to the freezer. Repeat this process every 30 minutes for a total of 4 hours. The granita is done when the mixture is completely frozen and appears dry and flaky in texture. 7. Grab a double rocks/highball glass and add liquor and preferred amount of infused Olala soda. Fill glass with hefty scoop of the honeydew ice and enjoy.

Coalition Brewing 2705 SE Ankeny St, Portland CoalitionBrewing.com

CBD-infused beer It

came out of nowhere, as it must have for so many Portland craft beer drinkers. There I stood, craning up at the chalkboard at a north Portland pub, scoping the selections in search of the evening’s first pint. The pub had a stellar list, I’m sure. There was probably a pilsner on draft. Two or three hazy milkshake IPAs. Maybe even an imperial bourbon barrel-aged stout and a sour. But I can’t remember what was on tap that night, because I forgot about the other taps as soon as the beertender suggested something new: “Try the Coalition Two Flowers IPA,” she said. “It has CBD in it!” It was early 2017. I was about to decide to leave the beer industry for a career in Cannabis, but at that point, I still had reservations of a regulatory nature. That pint helped tip the scale. I deplaned from the beer industry and boarded rocketship Cannabis. All because Phil Boyle and the crew at Coalition Brewing decided to brew a new beer.

“I think bridging the gap is an important thing,” Boyle said. “Especially in Oregon. I think the identity of Oregon is craft Cannabis and craft beer. There really is a natural synergy to the overlap.” He worked with his team to carve out a new niche in the competitive Portland beer market, while at the same time helping destigmatize the concept of Cannabis for the average consumer. “The response was really phenomenal,” he said. Since the initial launch of Two Flowers IPA, Boyle says the beer has become the runaway sales leader of the Coalition lineup. It has gone well beyond a few niche taps at Cannabis friendly brewpubs, and now comes in bottles that claim real estate on the shelves at New Seasons Markets and retailers around the state - riding the CBD wave headfirst into the mainstream. FINDING CONFIDENCE IN NUMBERS

TANNINS & TERPENES ISSUE

Tale of Two Crafts The truth whoops and wails, writ large on the walls of former family farms in the form of financial spreadsheets and pitch decks. The Craft Cannabis industry has moved out of the cottage. Producers and consumers stand in stark relief on the global stage, whether they’ve been dragged out of the shadows or strut proudly into the spotlight, finally able to slang and smoke in public view. Well, not literally - yet. As with any new multi-billion dollar industry, no one knows where it’s going to go. But we can look at one place for clues: Craft beer. Once maligned and bound by prohibition, beer spent nearly 90 years growing from a stylistically homogenous, commerce-over-creativity revenue machine into a diversified, rich landscape with a robust craft scene. It took time. The Federal Prohibition of alcohol in 1933 didn’t lay an easy path to a true craft scene. Due to various economic and social factors - as well as cunning moves on the part of the emerging major players, particularly Anheuser-Busch - the immediate and lasting response to freedom was, “Let’s build it big, efficient and consistent!” Beer became beer. It was light, it was yellow, it was easy to drink after a hard day. And it was nearly half a century before anything truly unique came along. In the same way the repeal of Prohibition didn’t lead to a craft beer scene, the federal legalization of Cannabis won’t help the craft producer as much as it will help the well financed, global players already entering the industry. That game is going to be about scale, distribution logistics, and out-positioning the other guys. But, just like in beer, there will be room for big Cannabis and craft Cannabis alike.

History Lesson

To see how that will work, we don’t need to look to 1933. We need to look at 1978. That’s when homebrewing was legalized. Here, average citizens started legally brewing in their garages. Homebrew shops sold ingredients and equipment

THESE EARTHY VEGETARIAN RECIPES have been made with the strain Wesley’s Wish from East Fork Cultivars, our CBD kitchen mates. This strain is great for relaxation and a mild to moderate head high, which at times is just what the doctor ordered. With a rustic and fruity flavor profile, I love how this strain meshes with the ingredients of these dishes.

LEMON SUGAR CARTRIDGE ONE GLANCE AT THE BRIGHT GOLDEN HUE OF THE OIL AND I KNEW I WAS IN FOR A TREAT. I must say, this cultivar had me questioning the validity of my taste buds. In my head I prepared myself for a big juicy burst of limonene, but was taken aback by the pungent, earthy essence of straight hash. My god, you’d think I was taking a dab of rosin if I didn’t know any better. I took a few more sips off the pen to be sure. Yup, still hash. I even had a friend confirm that I wasn’t going crazy, giving her a blind taste test and she thought it was OG Kush. This is in no way a complaint! The smoothness of the cartridge was absolutely immaculate. I tasted no harsh chemicals, no weird metallic flavor, and no immediate headache after inhaling like I’ve experienced when vaping distillate. The high concentration of terpenes still gives you a good cough to let you know the weed is working. I even cleansed my palate with ginger to confirm the terp profile, but that rich hash flavor really does take over - and it is divine! The effects, however, were completely in sync with the flavor profile I expected to experience. My tasting session was post-photo shoot and pre-video gaming, so it was the perfect high to decompress from work while still feeling motivated to get back to it after my gaming break. An hour into slaying zombies, I was still feeling stimulated and motivated by those Lemon Sugar fumes. I could easily smoke a whole cartridge of this in a few days. Hitting this vape truly brings me back to the medical days, feeling like I’m smoking a bowl of kief freshly harvested from a trim bin. Absolute heaven. The high really creeps up on you as well. Smoking this solventless cartridge on another, less motivated day had me feeling stoned to the bone. The broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes really makes my endocannabinoid system sing!

At 8:00 in the morning, the sun shone brightly through the haze of smoke in the cab. I cracked the window slightly, letting the sweet smell of Tangie float out into the morning traffic. It was Hempfest weekend and we had struck out early to raise the booth while you could still get a vehicle through the throngs of people massing near the entrance to Myrtle Edwards Park. sizes lined up and down the two bike paths, each acting as arterials, funneling the more than 100,000 attendees in and out with rhythmic regularity. I moved to Washington state sight unseen in 1999, fueled by stories of good weed and rampant prosperity. Arriving unemployed and penniless, the tales of a massive and free Cannabis event quickly caught my ear. I smiled recalling those early years. Weed was still illegal but the people of Seattle didn’t seem to think so, and once a year since 1991 they had proved it - throwing the world’s largest protestival, a literal smoke-in, complete with bands, stages and all manner of infrastructure. Expedia had recently purchased the access roads north of the park and promptly denied access to the Hempfest team. The result was chaos as the procession of vendors were forced to funnel in from the downtown side. I leaned out the window near the entrance shouting to a Hempfester as an overzealous volunteer tried to shake me down for a vendor packet. Kat Vohnshack appeared out of nowhere, saving the day.

Near Life Experience

nwlEAF.COM

I have a friend named Davey Dabs. And much to the perplexment of those who consider him a pal, he is seemingly always attempting to influence, or impress. We’re certain that this need for attention is inspired by something that predates adulthood, but it’s a theory that isn’t addressed out of the sheer fear that he may snap. We just sit back, watch, and hope for the best. It’s all you can do. We can’t save the polar bears, either. So, recently Davey Dabs decided to test the boundaries of spirituality with an attempt to attain the highest Cannabis buzz in the history of mankind. It sounded like a lofty endeavor, but since no one has ever proven otherwise, it was agreed to be a reasonable proposition. Rachel The Ripper volunteered to be the official documentarian. The experiment took place in a walk-in cooler with Davey Dabs in a full body wetsuit underneath a snowboarding onesie with his bearded dragon, Clarise, clutching his chest between the two layers directly over his heart. Thirty minutes prior, he had eaten one-thousand milligrams of infused Leaf Chews. He would stay inside for twenty minutes and continuously dab 3 grams of THC-V crystalline and 1 gram of full spectrum Co2 hash oil. When Davey Dabs exited, he resembled an inspired Doc from the movie Back to the Future when he discovered a scientific breakthrough. Davey Dabs has since begun a Go Fund Me account in hopes to raise enough money for a twomonth trip to Tibet to study with the Buddhist monks. The success of this endeavor, by the way, prompted Davey Dabs to initiate a petition in the Leaf magazines to begin the Cannabis version of the Guinness Book of World Records. Davey Dabs now believes that maybe we can save the polar bears.
