Editor’s Note Thanks for picking up The Tannins & Terpenes Issue!

We began pairing wine with weed in 2012 as an educational tool for the various strains and flavors present in Cannabis, and today we continue that legacy with a new round of pairings!

I’ve always been fascinated by the world of wine, the thousands of varieties, and the sommeliers who can divulge a year of production or soil type from a simple sip.

OKLAHOMA AND FLORIDA’S MMJ INDUSTRIES ARE GROWING FASTEST IN NATION

MARYLAND COURT RULES CANNABIS ODOR NOT ENOUGH TO WARRANT A LEGAL SEARCH Smelling like weed is not enough of a reason for police to arrest and search a person, according to a unanimous ruling in August from the Maryland Court of Appeals.

The court determined two police officers violated a man’s fourth amendment rights by conducting an unreasonable, warrantless search of his person after they found him in a vehicle that smelled like marijuana, reports NPR. “In the post-decriminalization era, the mere odor of marijuana coupled with possession of what is clearly less than ten grams of marijuana, absent other circumstances, does not grant officers the probable cause to effectuate an arrest and conduct a search,” the court ruled.

According to the decision, had the officers merely searched the car due to the pot smell, they would have been within the law. But searching the suspect, Michael Pacheco himself, was going too far, making the discovery of marijuana unusable in court.

Maryland decriminalized up to 10 grams of Cannabis in 2014. Possession of less than that amount is now considered a civil offense carrying a $100 fine.

Florida’s legal medical Cannabis market is second only to Oklahoma’s when it comes to growth rates, according to Marijuana Business Daily, reports the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Oklahoma, Florida, Ohio, Illinois and Maryland make up the top five for rate of medical marijuana growth, according to the Cannabis industry publication. Thirty-six states currently allow medicinal Cannabis.

Oklahoma has the fastest growing medical marijuana market because of its relatively high percentage of medical Cannabis users, 4.1 percent of the state’s population. Here the state has “low barriers of entry, including the fact there’s no list of qualifying conditions for patients,” reports Marijuana Business Daily.

Florida does have a list of qualifying conditions, and about 1.6 percent of the state’s population is registered with the MMJ program, according to the publication.

Oklahoma gets an average of 641 new medical marijuana patients a day, according to the report, while Florida gets 609.

IDAHOANS FLOCK TO CANNABIS STORE ON OREGON BORDER A new pot shop on the Oregon-Idaho border enjoyed a spectacular first day of business, thanks to excited customers from Idaho, reports the Associated Press.

When the store, Weedology, opened its doors in late July, customers from Idaho had been waiting in line for more than three hours, reports the Idaho Statesman.

The parking lot had a large number of cars with Idaho license plates. The shop’s location near the state line, right off Interstate 84, means some Idaho residents now have to travel 15 minutes or less to buy legal weed. Legal that is, until they get back into Idaho.

Nearly 200 customers were served in the first three hours of business, said Weedology GM Eric Lantz.

WHY CANADIANS ARE STILL BUYING ILLEGAL POT Nearly half of Canadian Cannabis consumers still buy their weed illegally, according to Canada’s National Cannabis Survey, released August 15.

Ten months after the Great White North legalized recreational marijuana, 42 percent of those who use it admitted buying at least some of their supply from an illegal source, reports Quartz.

Part of the issue is that the number of legal shops is rising slowly. Onerous registration procedures imposed by the federal government are largely to blame.

Officials have recently reassessed the rules, hoping to ease the licensing bottleneck.

Other prospective shop owners bemoan the unfairness of an existing license lottery system. Meanwhile, the licensed shops currently existing have consistently failed to meet consumer demand, according to the report.

Margaret Mead was a cultural anthropologist. This branch of anthropology is concerned with studying human society, its unique cultures, and the development of those cultures over time. In her groundbreaking work, Mead made great strides in the area of ethnological field observations - or observing a culture while immersing oneself inside of it.

In the 1920s and 30s, Mead began an ethnographic study that would become the launching pad for her career and celebrity.

In studying the attitudes toward sex in the cultures of Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, Mead produced a landmark study that would later influence the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

These studies made it clear that the cultures and attitudes towards sex in the societies she studied were in many ways quite different from the ideals of the western world.

She also found in many of the societies that women played a more dominant role than men. These studies became foundational in the burgeoning feminist movement of the 1960s.

Mead was a deft communicator of her ideas and findings in cultural anthropology. So much so, that she was often featured as an expert in mass media. This attention ultimately resulted in her being promoted to become the President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In

this capacity and others, she was called before varied branches of government many times to testify using her unique expertise on a number of issues.

In 1969, she appeared before a senate committee hearing on Cannabis and advocated for its legalization: “It is my considered opinion that at present that marihuana is not harmful unless it is taken in enormous and excessive amounts.

I believe that we are damaging this country, damaging our law, our whole law enforcement situation, damaging the trust between the older people and younger people by its prohibition, and this is far more serious than any damage that might be done to a few over-users, because you can get damage from any kind of overuse.”

When she passed away in 1978, Margaret Mead was the most famous anthropologist in the world.

Through her work, many people learned about anthropology and its holistic view of the human race while also learning about tolerance.

When it came to the legalization of Cannabis, it seems that’s all she was asking for.

Taya Northrop, an East Coast transplant, moved to Oregon with her family to improve her health and wellbeing. Nothrop deals with Hashimoto thyroiditis and hypermobility spectrum disorder - along with a list of other health conditions - and has found that Cannabis helps effectively treat her spectrum of issues holistically. After obtaining her card in 2014, she has been an OMMP patient ever since.

Northrop is a Virginia native who began using Cannabis with caution, due to the risky nature of potentially being persecuted for possession.

Despite the legal obstacles, what began as pure recreation evolved into conscious medication.

“I am from one of those states where it was always seriously risky to medicate, but I have done so off and on since about 1996,” Taya recalled.

“As a younger person, I leaned in harder on recreating, but as I aged it became straight up medicating in about 2006.”

As someone who deals with a slew of issues, treating everything with pharmaceuticals gets exhausting because pills add up and often produce unwanted side effects. Cannabis provides a spectrum of treatment which helps consolidate chronic pain management.

“I treat chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety associated with hypermobility spectrum disorder, Sjogren’s syndrome, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Tietze syndrome, osteoarthritis, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction,” said Taya.

“My first card arrived in April of 2014. I was new to Oregon, dispensary licensing was new, and I could finally get everything I needed to start improving my health situation.”

After more and more Cannabis research was made available to the public, Taya was able to concisely pinpoint what types of cannabinoids

helped for what she was specifically dealing with. Before moving to Oregon, Taya was mostly limited to consuming flower without knowing what strain she was using, and had to accept what her dealer gave her.

“For complex medical reasons (targeting the CB2 receptor for possible immunomodulation), I look for strains that are heavy on caryophyllene and a-humulene, which helps my all over inflammation,” she stated.

“Well known strains that I like are Platinum GSC, a well done Dog Walker, Sour Diesel, White Widow, and maybe even a little Green Crack for its heavy myrcene.”

Taya has found that decarbed oil tinctures work best when experiencing a painful flare-up. Edibles provide patients with durational potency that isn’t possible with the combustion of either flower or extracts.

After five years of trial and error, Taya has successfully stabilized her health and primarily consumes flower for day-to-day pain management.

As Taya said, “When I’m in a great deal of pain, I like decarbed oil tinctures because they are strong and they don’t burn, so you can take a large dose. I use those in conjunction with 2:1 CBD and THC topicals.

For everyday maintenance, I’m thankful to be in a good place after five years in Oregon, and I only consume flower at this time. It feel more secure in WHAT’S my life to know that I can access other products at WORKED medicinal doses whenever the need arises.”

As it stands today, Taya is a patient for one of the last OMMP growers in the state, but her access is limited due to plant limits for growers.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BEGIN USING CANNABIS?

JANICE & GREG: Both of us began using Cannabis at age 14 and it has been a huge part of our lives ever since! It has never hindered our ability to perform academically or in general for that matter, as Janice went on to get her master’s and graduated with an exceptionally high GPA.

WHAT GOT YOU INTO THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY?

J: For us, it all came down to a discussion with Greg’s parents. They loved the idea of us moving west to pursue our dream, and from that point forward it was full steam ahead.

G: I got into the industry when I was younger. During my college years I used to help some friends out here and there. After my Cannabis sales passed my Aamco Transmissions shop income, I knew that one day I needed to make the transition into owning a Cannabis related business. Every day I am reminded that I made the right decision!

HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD A LOVE OF GROWING?

J&G: Learning to grow was like discovering pot for the the first time all over again. Our love for cultivation developed by having the need to cultivate. Prior to moving from the East Coast to Oregon, our background was in edible production. Eventually we wanted to start more of our own propagation and create the starting material that was sourcing our edibles.

Every day we learn something new. We are always trying to change our growing techniques based on what strains of flower we currently have in rotation. Our team comes together and really tries to shoot for the stars!

WHICH STRAINS DO YOU PREFER AND WHAT’S YOUR PREFERRED METHOD OF CONSUMPTION?

J: White Tahoe Cookies, Double Dream, and Super Lemon Haze are some of my favorites lately. Also our Dead Head OG, which happened to win “Best Hybrid” at Budfest earlier this summer! Our White Tahoe Cookies took home a trophy as well at Oregon’s Growers Cup. Smoking flower out of a bowl is my go-to though.

G: Dead Head OG and Gelato have been a few of my top picks this year. Ultra Violence is a new one that’s soon to come out on our menu and not to be missed. I like to smoke out of a nice clean glass pipe while at home. If I’m on the go, I prefer a hemp blunt. I like how slow they burn and how much longer they last than a traditional paper. I’ve always loved flower, the whole ritual of it. Breaking it up, smelling it, putting it in the bowl - the whole process has always been something I’ve enjoyed. When you take out some of that process, it’s not as enjoyable for me.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SETTING TO ENJOY CANNABIS IN?

G: My favorite setting is sitting on the back porch of our property and taking in all the beauty Oregon has to offer. “Everywhere,” chimes in Janice.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED IN THE INDUSTRY AND WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE CHANGE?

J&G: One of the biggest challenges is keeping up with the new OLCC regulations that are constantly being created. Having a confident staff and metric specialist to help cross train with us makes a world of a difference. We are continuously keeping ourselves up to date with any changes, which can be draining at times. It can be very costly as well, as having such a large plant count requires us to purchase a ton of plant tags.

As far as change, we would like to see more banking options instead of just one. It would be nice for the OLCC to dumb it down a bit, but we understand that these rules are set in place for a reason and respect them accordingly. Our question is, do other agriculture products require this kind of tracking? Could it be simpler?

At the end of the day, we are just happy to be a part of the legal industry and have a place in the Oregon Cannabis market. Hash aficionados rejoice! If you prefer high-grade solventless extracts you must try this. The Orange Ganache rosin is full of tangy notes of orange blossoms mixed with a creamy vanilla musk and sour citrus undertones. The appearance resembles creamy cookie batter or glossy apple butter. Keep it refrigerated for freshness and terpene retention.

Upon opening the jar I detected tangy lemon and orange notes, a sweet cake-y finish, orange blossom, vanilla frosting, and undertones of sour citrus. Cracked pepper and lemon curd also linger.

I would describe the first dab as incredibly soft, enhanced with a citrus musk that allows the ganache-like flavor to actually live up to its name. I thought the tangy citrus funk of the nose would hit harder on the palate, but the soft, vanilla flavor outpaced its fruity counterparts. The citrus and orange blossom notes arrived subtly on the exhale.

A relaxing and easy high. The onset is comfortable without being racy or overwhelming. It’s a self-reflective high that brings you inward and back to your breath. Anyone who deals with anxiety or needing to unwind would definitely benefit from the effects of this strain. I would describe it as the perfect dab to transition you from work mode into peace and tranquility.

by Frost City Gardens. The Gnome Grown crew hunted and selected this phenotype in the fall of 2018. I was graciously provided with a rather large nug as my review sample. Snapping a few buds off the stem revealed intense, nostril flaring notes of roadkill, skunk and diesel fumes.

A grinder is most definitely necessary, as the trichomes cling to the fingers like sticky traps. I rolled up a few joints with some friends and we all enjoyed the incredibly smooth and flavorful smoke.

Notes of sour milk and roadkill on the inhale, followed by sour grapefruit and cookie dough on the exhale.

The effects were pretty well-balanced and focused, as I was able to knock out a few chores after smoking a joint to the face. I’d recommend this strain to patients and consumers looking for a functional daytime smoke.

Terpenes are produced by the trichomes of the plant - the same place where THC is produced, as a way of producing resins and protecting the plant from pests.

These aromatic compounds are found all over nature and the plant world, and are the source of essential oils and many naturopathic medicines. Luckily for us, they provide powerfully beneficial effects on the mind and body when combined with cannabinoids. There are more than 120 types of terpenes that have been found in Cannabis, and they are largely responsible for what we view as expressions of strains, the taste and flavor, and the highs we associate and enjoy with our favorite Cannabis.

The Entourage Effect

Beyond great flavor, terpenes actually assist cannabinoids in entering the bloodbrain barrier, and providing the high that we love. This is a synergistic relationship on a chemical level, and is why the plant has the effects we associate with strains.

As you’ll see below, the common terpenes found in Cannabis have diverse effects and flavors. These terpenes exist in nature through fruits and herbs, and have been used therapeutically in natural medicines for thousands of years. This is where the science of natural terpenes meets Cannabis, all in a beneficial form known as the entourage effect. Every time you use Cannabis, the entourage effect is responsible for delivering your high.

Why terps matter and why THC percentages don’t.

Simply put, without terpenes, Cannabis would be very boring. This is why asking for high THC is a useless way to purchase Cannabis. A strain with 15% THC and high terpene levels will certainly provide a stronger, more dynamic high than a basic 25-30% THC strain that has been cultivated only for the chemical - not the effects. This is most evident when comparing concentrates, like distillate versus solventless, hydrocarbon or CO2 concentrate.

For patients and connoisseurs alike, terpenes and flavor are what define purchasing at the dispensary. When smelling five to ten strains, usually one or two will smell or feel better, and often one or two will not. This is more than simply smelling a flower though! When your body smells Cannabis, the terpenes take effect aromatically, much like essential oils, and deliver signals to your body before you ever smoke the bud. Listen to your body, follow your nose, and ask for terpene tests and strain genetics/ legacy before worrying about the THC percentages. Chances are, it really doesn’t matter.

Common Terpenes & Powerful Effects Myrcene The most common terpene found in Cannabis, this terpene has earthy, musky and kush notes, and is known for sedative effects. Also found in mangos that enhance its effect, Myrcene offers anti-inflammatory benefits and is helpful for chronic pain and helping with cancer treatments as a supplement.

Limonene The terpene limonene is also found in citrus fruits like oranges and tangerines. Limonene is a potent anti-fungal and anti-cancer agent, helping naturally reduce the presence of carcinogens in the body. It’s also a mood-elevating terpene that relieves anxiety, along with a signature lemony fuel flavor.

Linalool Kushy, spicy and floral, Linalool brings a lot of flavor to different strains. Also found in lavender, mint, cinnamon and coriander, linalool is a powerful sedative and great for pain, depression, arthritis, seizures and insomnia.

Caryophyllene Spicy and peppery, this terpene is found in black pepper, cloves, and other natural spices like basil or oregano. The only terpene that bonds to CB2 receptors, which is how the body takes in cannabinoids, this anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving terpene has also been noted as a potential helper in reducing alcohol dependency.

Alpha/Beta-Pinene Responsible for the piney flavored strains we love, these twin terpenes are bronchodilators and can help with respiratory function and oxygen circulation, and have great promise for asthma. They also have anti-inflammatory effects, and have shown benefits for arthritis, Crohn’s disease and in cancer treatments.

Humulene The most common terpene found in hops, a sister plant to Cannabis, its woodsy and citrus flavors are found in lemongrass, jasmine and tea tree oil. This unique terpene also has antiparasitic properties, is an antioxidant, and brings antimicrobial and antifungal properties that also directly counteract cancer growth.

Terpineol Blame this terpene for the couch lock effects. This relaxing terpene is floral with notes of anise and mint. In addition to relaxing effects, it’s also an antibiotic!

As mentioned above, there are over 100 other terpenes commonly found in Cannabis, and all have medicinal effects! When looking at a test result that contains terpenes, look for these common elements, and remember that a small amount goes a long way. While the percentages will never be as high as THC - and we wouldn’t want them to be - the effects of terpenes are truly the best part of consuming Cannabis!

TANNINS BAUMAN’S is a classic farmstead operation that recently began bottling and selling their cider into grocery stores like Green Zebra, and specialty bottle shops like The BeerMongers.

This delicious cider is a beautifully approachable, balanced brew that can please both beer drinkers and cider enthusiasts alike.

On the front of the palate, it smacks your mouth with tart, apple peel like tannins. Definitely dry but by no means devoid of flavor. The mid-palate brings a crispy and effervescent mouthfeel.

On the back end, a luscious yet subtle sweetness coats the mouth. There is minimal acidity as well, making it very novice friendly and easy on the gut.

Locally crafted in Gervais, Oregon using more than a dozen different apple varietals, all of Bauman’s ciders are made in the traditional method of fermenting apples in barrels, giving them more tannic expressions thanks to the extended contact with wood.

TANNINS WATARI BUNE is the name of the rice varietal used to make this sake. This rice strain was common in the 1920s and 1930s in Japan, but after a serious bout of typhoons and dire pest management issues, farmers and sake brewers grew weary of the rice, and production ceased. Sixty years later, Takaaki Yamauchi, seventh generation president and brewer of Huchu Homare brewery in Ibaraki, rediscovered this legendary rice varietal which is said to be an heirloom rice strain.

He began with 14 grams of seedlings he acquired from the Japanese government and planted them in 1988.

Yamauchi didn’t brew his first batch of sake until three years later and in 1990 he finally created the Watari Bune brand. The sake immediately received cult status in Japan and has been a coveted favorite of sake aficionados around the world.

“The 55” sake is dry with bright notes of fruit and floral on the palate. But the funk also comes through providing depth without sweetness.

The peachy aftertaste lingers, making this an incredibly drinkable sake.

Serve chilled and pair with seafood or duck dishes, or in season summer berries or grapes, and a rich cheese like baked brie.

Cannabis Beverage Highlight Since not everyone enjoys the effects or flavors of alcoholic beverages, Oregon consumers are fortunate to have a multitude of Cannabis companies producing Cannabis infused beverages for non-drinkers across the state. With everything from sodas to coffees to fresh juices, there are a wide range of products Oregonians can use to craft a tasty beverage replacing beer, wine or spirits. We toured three local businesses to learn more about the companies crafting these drinks.

This Bend-based canna-brewery founded by passionate fermentation enthusiasts Dan Pilver and Alex Berger produces some of the few “crossover” products marketed towards both Cannabis consumers and cocktail lovers alike.

With varying THC levels, Magic Number’s ginger beer, cold brew coffee and craft sodas are made for all tolerance levels and for all types of consumers, including medical patients. With six different serving sizes and ratios ranging from 8:1 CBD to THC to an outright 50mg THC butt-kicker, Magic Number has done an outstanding job making their products accessible for everyone. We caught up with Dan to learn a bit more about the business.

WHY DID YOU START MAGIC NUMBER?

My business partner, Alex, and I both share a passion for craft beverages.

We started with the idea of a craft distillery in 2013, but after taking a closer look at the start up costs and market landscape compared to what was happening in the newly emerging Cannabis market, we decided to shift our focus to Cannabis beverages.

We started with ginger beer and cold brew coffee, and have expanded to canned sodas and craft tinctures.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS UNIQUE? First off, we have a “no crap” policy, which means that we only use all-natural ingredients. Beyond that, putting Cannabis into liquid edibles is its own science and we’re proud of our emulsion process. We start with 100% full spectrum extract from East Fork Cultivars, and the end product is super smooth and dissolves easily in water. It’s important to us that our products offer a smooth, consistent dose without the emulsion being thick or chunky. And lastly, we called ourselves Magic Number because we believe everyone has their own “magic number” when it comes to edibles.

By offering our beverages in different strengths, we allow consumers to tailor their experience - drink a whole can or share it with friends.

HOW HAS YOUR FACILITY EVOLVED AND GROWN? Back in the medical days, we made our first batches in five gallon kegs in a garage converted to a brewery, and everything was bottled and labeled by hand. Our current facility is a true canna-brewery with a 2000 gallon capacity per batch. And we also have an automated bottler and labeler. Ablis has made one of the most effective entrances into the mainstream market for an Oregon Cannabis company to date. Thanks to an intimate understanding of many of the aspects of beverage production via their affiliation to Bendistillery, Ablis has had a leg up on success out of the gate. Producing CBD infused sodas, Ablis has worked their way into hundreds of bars, bottle shops, and restaurants across the state with draft and bottled beverages. Offering a solid 25mg CBD per 12oz bottle and currently available in Lemon Ginger and Cranberry Blood Orange, the beverages have been wildly popular non-alcoholic options and cocktail mixers.

Ablis Event Lead Parker Moessner walks us through some of the brand’s history and goals moving forward.

HOW WAS ABLIS FOUNDED?

In 1996 Jim Bendis founded the Bendistillery in Bend, Oregon, effectively pioneering craft distilling in the United States. Crater Lake Spirits, the most well-known of the Bendistillery brands, produces gin, vodka and whiskey. We also produce many other spirits through our private label, Bend Spirits.

Ablis, a subsidiary of Bendistillery, was founded in 2014 when Jim, along with his son Max Bendis, envisioned Cannabis infused beverages being available on store shelves. Ablis was liberated with the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed hemp products to be sold nationwide, and now focuses exclusively on CBD products.

WHY BEND, OREGON?

For one, we already resided in Bend!

For a long time, Bend has been known for its residents’ innovation in craft beverages. The legalization of recreational Cannabis in Oregon gave us a head start on being able to experiment with infusing the plant into a drink. The larger craft breweries here distribute on a national scale, which has paved the way for other craft beverages in Bend to be successful - whether it be kombucha, cider or CBD beverages.

HAS THE ALCOHOL INDUSTRY BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF SELLING YOUR PRODUCTS?

Because our beverages are also available on tap and we need distributors that are used to working with kegs, bottles and cans, the alcohol industry has been a key player in helping us distribute our products. Truckloads of beer leave Bend every day, and we are keen on taking advantage of that infrastructure. It doesn’t hurt that Crater Lake Spirits is known for quality and excellence, and we build many relationships from our knowledge of the alcohol industry.

DOES ABLIS UTILIZE ANY SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT TO MAKE ITS PRODUCTS?

Our highly skilled product development and production teams utilize the standard brite tanks, mixing tanks, fillers, etc. We have also developed a patent-pending process to blend the CBD into our beverages.

Special equipment is needed to accurately emulsify based on pH and many other factors. We’re working on developing a new building on our 26 acre farm that will house our very own canning line.

Having been part of Oregon’s OMMP program, they’re OGs in the Eugene scene and have developed a loyal following thanks to a focus on quality culture. We linked up with their founder Shane Cavanaugh to learn more about their operation.

WHAT IS THE ETHOS OF HERBAN TRIBE?

Herban Tribe represents a piece of authentic Cannabis culture. At the heart of our organization is a very close group of friends and family members. We attribute much of our success to this special formation of people. All of us have realized that being adaptive is critical to survive in this industry. We hope to continue to be a source of accurate information, excellent genetics and a flow of unique products.

HOW ARE TERPENES USED WITH YOUR PRODUCTS?

Terpenes have played an important role for us. Terpene profiles are at the heart of our goals and expectations for any Cannabis variety that we grow. In 2016 we decided to take it a step further and added terpenes to our fresh pressed juice line. Next was our strain specific tinctures featuring terpenes.

Terpene collection is something that we have been working on in our lab as well.

We have been developing a unique collection process that we feel is remarkably different than what is currently available.

“Now we have people giving out seeds, and giving advice on how to grow stuff,” he said.

To him, as with a lot of Cannabis consumers who remember the pre-legalization days, the entire situation still feels like a dream.

“I can’t believe it’s really happened,” he said. “I can text (co-Monger Chris) Tappan while he’s on the way to the bank and say, ‘Hey can you go grab a joint?’”

Each year, for the beer bar’s anniversary, multiple breweries concoct special brews to mark the occasion.

HIGH HOPS

The Hood River Brewery says of its fall seasonal, “Dank is a popular but hard-to-define adjective used to describe hops, but we’ve done our best to define it.” The earthy, tropical mango funk in this hefty IPA lets you know it’s not just a clever name.

Claim 52 TJ’s Durban Poison Eugene’s Claim 52 and TJ’s Gardens teamed up to create one of the most obviously branded crossover hits in the Cannabis friendly craft beer scene.

There’s no coded language here - they’re straight up telling people that they’re trying to make a beer that tastes and smells like Cannabis.

Together, they dialed in the recipe for this brew as a nod to the Cannabis farm’s legendary cut of Durban Poison. Lemon zest, along with sticky simcoe and citra hops, lend this beer a terpy zing to balance out its frothy malt body and 7% ABV. Block 15 Dab Lab Series Block 15’s Dab Lab borrows directly from the Cannabis industry with this series of sticky, hoppy beers, brewed using SuperCritical CO2 hop extract.

Yep, SuperCritical CO2, the same technology likely used to extract the oil in that vape pen you’re holding.

Oskar Blues Can O Bliss This series of fruity, resinous ales from Colorado’s craft can pioneers, Oskar Blues, focuses on tropical, citrus and pine notes, reminiscent of classic Cannabis flavors. The empty cans can even come in handy in a pinch, if you find yourself in the woods without an implement. Though we wouldn’t recommend that.

came out of nowhere, as it must have for so many Portland craft beer drinkers. There I stood, craning up at the chalkboard at a north Portland pub, scoping the selections in search of the evening’s first pint. The pub had a stellar list, I’m sure.

There was probably a pilsner on draft. Two or three hazy milkshake IPAs. Maybe even an imperial bourbon barrel-aged stout and a sour.

But I can’t remember what was on tap that night, because I forgot about the other taps as soon as the beertender suggested something new: “Try the Coalition Two Flowers IPA,” she said. “It has CBD in it!”

It was early 2017. I was about to decide to leave the beer industry for a career in Cannabis, but at that point, I still had reservations of a regulatory nature.

That pint helped tip the scale. I deplaned from the beer industry and boarded rocketship Cannabis. All because Phil Boyle and the crew at Coalition Brewing decided to brew a new beer.

“I think bridging the gap is an important thing,” Boyle said.

“Especially in Oregon. I think the identity of Oregon is craft Cannabis and craft beer. There really is a natural synergy to the overlap.”

He worked with his team to carve out a new niche in the competitive Portland beer market, while at the same time helping destigmatize the concept of Cannabis for the average consumer.

“The response was really phenomenal,” he said.

Since the initial launch of Two Flowers IPA, Boyle says the beer has become the runaway sales leader of the Coalition lineup. It has gone well beyond a few niche taps at Cannabis friendly brewpubs, and now comes in bottles that claim real estate on the shelves at New Seasons Markets and retailers around the state - riding the CBD wave headfirst into the mainstream.

Tale of Two Crafts The truth whoops and wails, writ large on the walls of former family farms in the form of financial spreadsheets and pitch decks. The Craft Cannabis industry has moved out of the cottage.

Producers and consumers stand in stark relief on the global stage, whether they’ve been dragged out of the shadows or strut proudly into the spotlight, finally able to slang and smoke in public view. Well, not literally - yet.

As with any new multi-billion dollar industry, no one knows where it’s going to go. But we can look at one place for clues: Craft beer.

Once maligned and bound by prohibition, beer spent nearly 90 years growing from a stylistically homogenous, commerce-over-creativity revenue machine into a diversified, rich landscape with a robust craft scene.

It took time. The Federal Prohibition of alcohol in 1933 didn’t lay an easy path to a true craft scene. Due to various economic and social factors - as well as cunning moves on the part of the emerging major players, particularly Anheuser-Busch - the immediate and lasting response to freedom was, “Let’s build it big, efficient and consistent!”

Beer became beer. It was light, it was yellow, it was easy to drink after a hard day. And it was nearly half a century before anything truly unique came along.

In the same way the repeal of Prohibition didn’t lead to a craft beer scene, the federal legalization of Cannabis won’t help the craft producer as much as it will help the well financed, global players already entering the industry. That game is going to be about scale, distribution logistics, and out-positioning the other guys.

But, just like in beer, there will be room for big Cannabis and craft Cannabis alike.

1. In a large skillet heat one tablespoon of the oil. Add the peppers, beans, fennel, onion and carrot, cooking until almost tender, 10-12 minutes. Remove to a plate.

2. Add the remaining tablespoon of canna-oil and add the zucchini, yellow squash and the lima beans, cooking for 5-7 minutes. Add the garbanzos and cook for 2-3 minutes.

3. In a small bowl, add the broth along with the saffron and the turmeric. Allow to sit for three minutes. Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet, combine gently and serve.

THREE MUSHROOM STEW Serves 6

½ oz dried shitake mushrooms 2 tablespoons canna-oil 2 leeks, rinsed and chopped 2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 2 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced 2 lbs assorted mushrooms, cut uniformly 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped 12 oz whole wheat pasta, any shape ½ teaspoon salt 6 medium eggs Vegetable spray

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees 2. Place cauliflower and the onion wedges on a baking sheet and toss with the olive oil. Roast until tender, 35-40 minutes. Stir occasionally.

3. In a large skillet heat the canna-oil and sauté beans, garlic and spices.

4. Add the raisins and cook an additional 3-5 minutes.

5. In a large bowl combine everything, including the couscous and toss gently. Serve hot or at room temperature.

1. In a small bowl combine dried mushrooms with one cup of hot water. Allow to sit 20 minutes.

2. Heat the canna-oil in a large skillet. Sauté the leeks and the carrots until cooked and tender, 8-10 minutes.

Add the garlic and stir to combine. Place in a bowl. Add the fresh mushrooms to the pan and cook until the moisture from the mushrooms is released, 8-10 minutes. Add the rosemary and the salt and return the vegetables to the pan along with the mushrooms and their liquid.

3. Cook the pasta according to the instructions on the package. Divide cooked pasta between the six plates.

Place the mushrooms on top of each serving of pasta. Keep warm.

4. Spray pan with vegetable spray and cook eggs until the white is set. Place an egg on the top of each serving.

AROMA (5/5) The smell of this product is pure peppermint without much depth. Menthol lovers and olfactory minimalists rejoice. I’m not a huge fan of mint on my skin, but the cool feeling of peppermint is refreshing in the summertime. Plus, it’s perfect in lieu of a minty foot cream.

I deal with cracked heels and this balm does wonders for long-lasting hydration. The Cannabis found in the product also helps heal and alleviate my dry paws, as I can run barefoot without ruining my feet.
