Meet your SOAR Leaders

If you have not created your Roomsync Profile, log on to CatPAWS to find your ideal roommate. Room assignments will be posted on CatPAWS starting in July, as well as the contact information for your new roommate so you can plan for the fall.

If you plan to apply for financial aid and you have not already done so, please complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online www.fafsa.ed.gov. List Northwest’s school code (002496) to give us access to your record for processing.

During SOAR you will be teamed up with a SOAR leader and a small group of 10 to 15 new students who share similar interests. Your Soar leader will lead you through the day’s activities and help you become acquainted with Northwest. SOAR Leaders are upperclassmen who have been on campus and know the ins and outs of life at Northwest. You will also get to know other first-time students in your SOAR group and others. You may even find your future roommate!

Living and Academic Learning Communities (LALC) are offered to the majors of Agricultural Sciences, Business and Natural Sciences. If you are interested in a LALC, visit www.nwmissouri.edu/reslife/Communities for more information.

Tower yearbook If you enroll in at least 12 credit hours, you will be automatically billed for Northwest’s yearbook. If you do not want the yearbook, forms to remove the charge will be sent to you in late July with your bill.

Freshman directory A freshman directory is available on CatPAWS through Sept. 15. This directory includes your name, hometown, high school, major, SOAR date and, later, your Northwest email. It is set up to help you connect with other students in your area and major at SOAR and is only accessible to other new freshmen. So check it out and see who’s coming from your hometown.

For Tuesday and Wednesday SOAR dates, we will have a pasta bar of marinara, meat sauce, alfredo sauce, pasta, tossed salad, breadsticks, cookies and beverages. For Friday and Saturday SOAR dates, we will have sandwiches, soup, salad, cookies and beverages. When you signed up for SOAR you either confirmed your major or if you are still deciding, your meta major. If you need more information on choosing a major or would like to explore your options, you can find more information at http://www.nwmissouri.edu/advisementassistance/ deciding.htm. Don’t be afraid to try a course in something you’ve never studied. This is a chance to expand your interests. Many students find these new subjects are their favorites.

Bring ’em! We have orientation for them, too. They’ll have the chance to learn about Northwest, get their questions answered and have some fun in the process. In the past, parents have said they really enjoyed their day, so encourage them to attend. We also have special “Proud Parent” t-shirts they can purchase.

Students must attend the entire day, which will finish around 3 or 3:30 p.m, so please plan accordingly. Some students may choose to do English Placement between 3 and 4 p.m., if needed.

How long will I be there?

We have taken all the guesswork out of registering for classes by preparing for your visit before you even get here.

Each department has developed an optimal class schedule for each of its majors, including each deciding meta major.

Your SOAR leader and your faculty/staff advisor develop an individual schedule that they think will best suit you based on personal information, such as classes you have taken for dual credit, your ACT score, whether you’re a studentathlete and other interest areas indicated on your SOAR card. At 1:30 p.m. on SOAR days, students begin meeting with advisors. At that time you will review your schedule with your SOAR leader and/or advisor to see if it meets your needs. Modifications can be made at this time, and you will have a copy of your schedule when you leave.

The enclosed confirmation letter verifies your SOAR date. On that day you should arrive between 8 and 8:45 a.m. at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. (It is not necessary to arrive before 8 a.m.)
