What I Won’t Ask You
“G
ot all your shopping done?” If one more person asks me that, I may say a naughty word. I’ve purchased only two gifts thus far and dislike being reminded of my inefficiency. Anyway, most people just ask so they can brag about how they finished their shopping, and wrapping, by Oct. 31. These smarmy souls need to get a real life. (Me jealous? Heavens no.) We procrastinators are in good company. Most actual purchases occur the weekend before Christmas. I say “actual” because it’s my theory that some folk (like me) mill around stores with our good intentions, early in the season, but put off buying decisions. We tend either to be Denyers (Christmas isn’t really coming soon; there’s not really any rush, it’s just another liberal hoax) or PPPs (Passive Present Purchasers.) I am the latter, since I don’t buy a gift until it jumps into my cart of its own volition and dances a Can-Can to impress me. You see, we PPPs are soft, caring souls who must consider ALL the possibilities, from EVERY angle, before making an important decision like whether to buy Aunt Nelly a Chia Pet or a Presto quesadilla maker. In early December, such decisions seem monumental. By Dec. 23, it’s amazing how they clarify. And it’s not just at Christmas. I work in the deadline-driven publishing industry. Something about the blaring sirens in my head (and extra caffeine in my bloodstream) equip me with superhuman powers to accomplish the impossible, once deadlines reach the “mission critical” stage. Wild reindeer couldn’t drag me out to shop on Black Friday; I don’t care to be around shoppers so competitive they stake out the store all night, bundled up in their Snuggies, huddled around propane stoves, hoping the crowd won’t turn ugly and trampllight up their Snuggies with the propane). Nearly 100 injuries and seven deaths occurred this way in the U.S. since 2006. Way to celebrate the Prince of Peace, fellow Americans! All for $20 off that jumbo flat screen TV. Whatever your shopping style, remember that gifts from the Wise Men had nothing to do with why Jesus loves us. Happy Holidays! ❚

All About Natural Gas Fireplace Options N othing says “cozy” like a fireplace, and many homeowners are opting for natural gas. The three main kinds are vented gas logs, vent-free gas logs and direct-vent fireplaces. Each has unique benefits. “It’s about finding the best fit with your space and circumstances,” says Kevin Obee, Benson Stone Co., 1100 11th St., Rockford. Vent-Free Gas Logs/Stoves • No chimney needed • Almost 100-percent efficient • Smaller, less realistic flames: yellow in newer models, blue in older models “The fire throws off a large amount of moist heat, so this is a good option for warming up difficult-to-heat spaces, such as a chilly basement or a large room with vaulted ceilings,” says Obee. These fireplaces must be placed in well-ventilated rooms, to avoid condensation. Any combustion byproducts are released into the room’s atmosphere, since there is no vent. “This bothers only a few people who are very sensitive to chemical smells,” Obee says. Vented Gas Logs • Attractive, heat-producing flames • Can go into an existing fireplace • Requires professional installation of gas line “The big disadvantage is that they draw warm air from other parts of the house and send it outside,” explains Obee. “Your furnace may run nonstop, and other rooms may become pretty chilly.”
This natural gas fireplace is one of many on display at Benson Stone Co., in Rockford.
Direct-Vent Gas Fireplaces • On/off switch • Attractive, efficient fire • Glass doors protect room’s air quality • Double-chambered chimney keeps warm air inside • Free-standing or built-in; can be installed almost anywhere “One chamber draws combustion air into the fireplace and the other vents flue gas to the outside,” explains Obee. “And heated air from your house is not being sent outside.” ❚ For more ideas about fireplaces, visit the Benson Stone Co. showroom.

Christmas
The Dawn of Grace
W
hile many details related to Jesus’ birth are murky, scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments couldn’t be clearer about his purpose for coming: to bring light to a dark world and everlasting life to those who choose to believe on him. In Luke 4:16-21, shortly after Jesus began his ministry, he went to his hometown synogogue in Nazareth, opened the scroll of the prophet Isaiah (part of the Old Testament, written some 700 years before he was born) and read: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Then Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the minister, and sat down. Everyone stared at him, and he told them, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.” While many religions recognize Jesus as a prophet, only Christianity celebrates him as the son of God and the messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. Christianity is entirely unique in its message of grace. “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God,” writes the apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:8. John 1:17 tells us, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ ended classism by extending the option of salvation to all people, Jew and non-Jew, male and female, slave and free (Galatians 3:28). Shortly before his death by crucifixion, Jesus prayed not only for people who already believed on him, but for “all those who shall believe on me through their word” (John 17:20) – and that means us. Why not make time this season to read for yourself the scriptures that describe Christ’s birth? You’ll find them in the first chapters of the gospels of Luke and Matthew. Merry Christmas! ❚ 12

An Easy, Heartwarming Holiday Treat
T
he holiday season is never complete without friends and family gathered ’round for festive cheer. Whether you’re the hostess with the mostest or an extroverted elf whose calendar is bursting at the seams, there’s no need to fret over what you’ll serve at your next event, even when you’re pressed for time. In just 20 minutes, you can whip up these heartwarming Peppermint Crunch Fudge bars, featuring Nestle Crunch miniatures. Your guests will love the texture of the crunchy milk chocolate paired with a burst of peppermint flavor. Plus, it’s a recipe so simple even the kids can join in on the baking fun.
Peppermint Crunch Fudge Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 25
Ingredients: •28 Nestle Crunch Bar Minis
•3 cups Nestle Toll House Bittersweet Chocolate Morsels •1 can (14 ounces) Nestle Sweetened Condensed Milk • 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes (or peppermint discs), divided in half
Directions: Line 9-by-9-inch pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Place bars in even layer on bottom of pan. Place chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk and peppermint extract in medium saucepan over low heat. Stir until chips and milk are melted together. Mix in 1/8 cup crushed candy canes. Once everything is melted together, spread evenly over bars in prepared pan. Immediately sprinkle with remaining crushed candy canes, pressing lightly into fudge. Cool until firm, then cover with plastic and place in refrigerator to harden completely. Cut into squares and serve. ❚ Source: Family Features

Holiday Lights Continued from Cover
Rockford Lights Displays Thanks to the Rockford Park District and the Rockford Convention and Visitors Bureau (RACVB), opportunities abound for families and friends to enjoy a city that’s a little bit brighter. Once again, Rockford Park District in conjunction with Rockford Fourth of July Committee presents The Holiday Festival of Lights, an annual display of twinkling against the scenic backdrop of Sinnissippi Park, 1401 N. Second St. The festival has grown immensely since it began in 1989 with only 11 displays. Now, visitors can drive through the park’s winding roads and admire more than 50 dazzling showcases that include Santa Claus, reindeer, snowmen, nativity scenes and more, all sponsored by local businesses and organizations. “This familiar family favorite

continues to change every year,” says Laura Gibbs-Green, public relations manager for the Rockford Park District. “This year, the end of the route is extraspectacular with special glowing features. We’re very proud and happy to present this to the public.” Driving through The Holiday Festival of Lights is free, though donations are appreciated. The displays are aglow on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 27 from 5-10 p.m., and will stay on all night Christmas Eve and until 10 p.m. on Christmas Day. Visit rockfordfireandice.com for more information. Just across the street, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, 1354 N. Second St., hosts All Aglow Holiday Display through Jan. 6. Sparkling holiday lights and beautiful floral displays enhance the already merry conservatory, while the outdoor grounds are also aglow for the season. Regular admissions charges apply for the display inside the conservatory. Hours are from Tues.-Fri. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

and Sat.-Sun. 10 a.m.-8 p.m. “The grounds are completely transformed by more than 160,000 lights – it’s really above and beyond this year,” Gibbs-Green says. “Santa and Mrs. Claus often stop by, and the tropical backdrop provides a magnificent scenery for family photos, making this a great event for families to enjoy together.” Visit nicholasconservatory.com for more information. Crossing the river, RACVB’s Rockford River Lights is brightening the downtown cityscape through Jan. 2. A palate of brilliant color that’s noticeable from near and far illuminates the riverside every evening from Thursday through Saturday, from 4:30-11 p.m. On these evenings at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., light shows choreographed to music can be seen free of charge. “Viewing is best from the walking path that makes its way through the light show on the west bank of the Rock River between the State and Jefferson
street bridges,” says Josh Albrecht, director of marketing for the RACVB. “River Lights illuminates downtown Rockford’s riverbanks in a way the community hasn’t experienced before. The sight will take your breath away.” Visit rockfordriverlights.com for more information. Walk The Gardens in Janesville The Holiday Light Show at Rotary Botanical Gardens, 1455 Palmer Drive, in Janesville, returns for its 20th year with more to see than ever before. More than 20 acres of the gardens glow with 370,000 lights, 100 decorated trees, animated displays, local music, seasonal food and drink, and more. This year, visitors can follow illuminated colored milk cartons and explore the new Woodland Walk path. The new route, which extends the walkway from the Observation Pier to the Gazebo Garden, is filled with displays of colorful Cover photo Jesse Fox, Rockford Park District
gingerbread men, penguins and more. This year’s light show also includes more interactive elements, such as a series of “selfie stops” where visitors can take photos and enter their images into the Gardens’ Facebook and Instagram photo contest. Young ones can explore the child-size Santa house and elf workshop. On select evenings, local entertainers will perform carols along the paths to add to the holiday cheer. “Most of the other area light shows, while beautiful, are made to be driven through, but ours is one of the few walkthrough light shows in this region,” says Susan Melton, marketing director. “So, it’s a very interactive experience and can be very powerful. You feel totally immersed in the beauty of the lights.” Open from 4 to 8 p.m., this year’s light show promises special events on select weekends in December. The 200foot electric model train display, created by the Wisconsin Garden Railway Train Society, will be open to viewing Dec.

Merrill & Houston’s Steak Joint Sizzles By Paul Anthony Arco, senior staff writer

eloit’s rich history comes alive at Merrill & Houston’s Steak Joint, 500 Pleasant St. “It’s a tribute to our city’s past and the industry leaders who created Beloit,” says Jayme Braasch, the restaurant’s general manager. “We want people to feel like they can really connect with Beloit.” Named after Orson Merrill and George Houston, who founded Merrill & Houston Iron Works in 1858 (later Beloit Ironworks and eventually the Beloit Corporation), the restaurant itself is a tribute to the past. The bar, for example, was constructed with wood gathered from a house that once stood on the property of the Iron Works. Leather seats, hardwood floors and many historic photographs lining the walls give the space a vintage feel. As the name implies, the restaurant features mouth-watering steaks along with a full-service menu of fish, chicken and

Easy Gift Wrap
H
ow a gift looks on the outside is often what builds the most excitement. “Using the right tools – such as a sharp pair of scissors and Scotch GiftWrap Tape that disappears onto the paper – helps create the perfect basic wrap that you can take to the next level with personalized embellishments,” says Jenni Radosevich, DIY expert and founder of the I Spy DIY blog. Here are a few easy adornments: For teens: Create your favorite emojis by cutting shapes out of construction paper and using double-sided tape to create faces. For kids: Use candy in place of bows and ribbons. Wrap with solid paper and tie bakers twine around the gift. For grandparents: Create a throwback to simpler times. Wrap the gift in solid black or white paper and embellish with tissue paper or coffee filters to add texture. For more gift-wrapping tips and tricks, visit ScotchBrand.com. Source: Family Features

Winter Revelry in the Heart of Wisconsin By Lindsey Gapen
T
here’s no better way to embrace winter weather than to visit Wausau, Wis. Great skiing, snowboarding and other fun recreation awaits at the city’s crown jewel: Granite Peak Ski Resort, located in Rib Mountain State Park off Wisconsin Highway 29. “Wausau is beautiful this time of year,” says Vicki Baumann, the general manager of Granite Peak. “You’ll never forget the incredible view of Lake Wausau from the top of the mountain.” Granite Peak has more than 70 runs on a 700-foot mountain, making it a great getaway for snowy recreation. Various family packages, college-student discounts and child discounts are available. This winter, a Family Festival Weekend occurs Feb. 5-7, during which families can enjoy live music, horse-drawn wagon rides and Saturday-night fireworks. In the midst of all the fun, Mardi
Gras Festival happens on Feb. 6, with hurricane drink specials and Cajun food from Granite Peak’s outdoor grill. From Feb. 12-15, Granite Peak celebrates a four-day Presidents Weekend with extended ski hours and live music. German Fest, happening Feb. 20, brings German beer and food specialties. “Granite Peak has so much to offer, it’s difficult to get the full experience in just one day,” Baumann says. “Also, there’s always something fun happening in Wausau, so you can ski or snowboard all day before enjoying some great shopping and dining in the city.” Baumann recommends a stop at Carmelo’s Italian Restaurant, 3607 N. Mountain Road, Wausau. As for accommodations, Jefferson Street Inn, 201 Jefferson St., provides a luxurious and cozy overnight stay. Not only can guests take advantage of a com-

Last-Minute Tax Adjustments Save Money A s 2015 comes to a close, it might be prudent to consider making adjustments to manage your tax liability. Compare your income now with what you anticipated when you set up your 2015 tax withholding or estimated tax payments. Is the income what you expected? More? Less? If more, do you need to increase your withholding or your estimated payments to ensure you’re not under withheld and subject to penalties? Remember, there’s a withholding safe harbor that allows you to pay either 100 percent of your prior year tax liability or 90 percent of your current year liability to avoid penalties. For those who make more than $150,000, the safe harbor is met when you pay 110 percent of your prior year tax liability or 90 percent of your current-year liability. Also note that if you are making estimated payments, the final payment is due Jan. 15, 2016. Assuming your income for
the year is evenly distributed, this should be the final of four equal estimated tax payments. If your income is not evenly distributed over the year, then making estimated tax payments is more complex. The tax system is a payas-you-go regime and you cannot backload your estimated taxes. Failure to make estimated payments mirroring the timing of your income will result in IRS penalty and interest charges, notwithstanding that you have had the appropriate amount withheld for the full year. Taxpayers with wage income and who have withheld less than they should have for 2015 should consider paying more tax by adjusting withholding immediately. Because any tax paid through employer withholding will be treated as though it was paid evenly throughout the
year, you may reduce the amount under withheld in the past by increasing the amount currently withheld. If you are under withheld and neither your spouse nor you works for an employer, then pay the under-withheld portion as soon as possible. Each day you are under withheld adds to IRS-imposed penalties and interest. ❚
