Tell them you saw
As I write this, it’s still technically summer.
It feels like summer, too — with muggy heat and chirping cicadas and giddy neighbor kids running around, playing with the garden hose. But there are signs of autumn’s approach. Yellow leaves are falling to the ground, school buses are driving by, and bigger kids are walk ing home with backpacks hoisted and violin cases

Butswinging.oncethis issue is in your hands, fall will officially be here.

This year, I’m embracing fall with a “bucket list” of sorts. I don’t want to put too much pressure on our family to “do it all,” but, for the first time in a while, we have some free weekends coming up. And I can’t think of any thing I’d rather do than fill them with fun fall activities.First, picking apples is a given. Take a look at our cover story and you’ll learn about DeMeester’s Orchard in Freeport, Ten Eyck Orchard in Brodhead, Wis., The Apple Hut in Beloit, Valley Orchard in Cherry Valley, Cur ran’s Orchard in Rockford, Edwards Apple Orchard East in Poplar Grove, and Edwards West in Winnebago. All of these places have incredible selections of apples and other treats.

Carving pumpkins, drinking cider, deco rating for Halloween — I’m excited for it all. Especially since my 1-year-old son, Elliot, is much more aware of the world around him this year compared to last year. I think he’ll enjoy seeing goats, sheep and other petting zoo animals, feeling bumpy gourds and squishy pumpkin innards, and tasting apple cider do nuts for the first time.
I can’t wait to experi ence fall through his eyes.Have a great week! ❚
The first day of fall coincides with the au tumnal equinox, which is on Thursday, Sept. 22 this year. I normally have mixed feelings about the start of this season. On the one hand, I like to hold onto summer as long as possi ble. But on the other hand, give me anything flavored with pumpkin spice and I’ll be one happy human. (Call me basic — I don’t mind!)

When it comes to preparing for cold temperatures, weather stripping for doors and plastic for windows offer a lot of bang for the buck, says Paul Nicholson of Nich olson Hardware, 1131 2nd Ave.
Now’s the Time to Winterize Your Home

wants to think about winter yet, but taking steps now to get your house ready for winter can save you mon ey and keep your family safe and warm. Start at the top, says Mike Callahan, President of Comfort 1st Installation, 612 Harrison Ave., who manages a group of energy performance contractors.

If you have a woodburning stove or fireplace, have it inspected and cleaned to remove the buildup of creosote, nests, and anything else that shouldn’t be in a chimney, says Brad Vander Heyden, president of Advanced Chimney Systems, 3486 Lonergan Dr., Rockford. Inspectors check all chimney parts, including the liner, damper, bricks, cap and spark screen, to ensure they’re in place and in good condition.
“Check the attic for adequate ven tilation and insulation,” he says. “About 90 percent of homes are under-insulated, which can cause energy loss and frozen pipes.”This is also a good time of year to have the roof checked for loose and miss ing shingles, and to make sure vent stacks and chimneys are well-sealed. Gutters full of leaves can damage the roof, siding and wood trim. When water gets backed up, it freezes into ice dams that can destroy the roof and cause water to leak indoors.
Nobody
“Doorssays.are very important because they’re constantly being opened and closed,” he adds. “Most people can tell if weather stripping is worn and needs to be replaced or if the rubber seal is cracked and gaps are evident.” ❚

“A creosote buildup is dangerous be cause it could lead to a chimney fire or, in rare cases, cause a house to catch on fire,” Vander Heyden says.
“You can usually hear or feel air leaks in windows and a plastic cover over win dows from the inside is very effective, es pecially in older homes, where windows may not be the most energy efficient,” Nicholson
“And we urge you, brothers and sis ters, warn those who are idle and disrup tive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient (makrothumeo) with everyone.”
Have you ever lost your temper while talking to someone, only to regret it later? Most of us have. It’s very human to indulge our emotions, when restraint would be far wiser.
Paul uses the same word to describe agape, the highest form of love, in I Cor. 13:4 & 5. “Love is patient (mak rothumeo), love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
When we condemn others, we over look the patience God has shown to us.
Instead, God’s patience for us should inspire our patience toward oth ers. It’s not easy, but He gives us the strength to do it anyway. ❚ Janine Pumilia
All of us want to prove we’re “right” in the points we make. But if our demeanor is unloving, then being “right” doesn’t much matter. The old saying, “They don’t care what you know until they know that you care” is true.

Being Patient
For Christians who care about the spiritual welfare of other people – in cluding annoying or weak people – this godly kind of patience is essential. Why? Because we’re to mimic God, who treats us with far more patience than any one of us deserves. Out of sheer gratitude, we should treat others likewise.
Paul asks fellow believers to do ex actly that, in I Thessalonians 5:14:
Anyone can hurtfully spew emo tions; it takes a real “grown-up” to ex ercise self-control. The more we mature in Christ, the greater our inner strength becomes. In fact, the ability to be patient, even when others provoke us, is one of the fruit of the spirit listed in Galatians 5:22. In the King James version, the Greek word “makrothumia” is trans lated “long suffering.” The word’s roots are the adjective makro (long) and verb thumeo (to act with passion, anger.) It’s a word that means the opposite of “shorttempered” and is often used elsewhere in scripture to describe the kind of patience God Himself has exercised toward us

“I was hired so people wouldn’t have to travel to Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago for their surgeries,” Zim merman says. “People in Beloit are very loyal to the health system. They don’t want to leave – they want to stay here for their care.”
In addition to performing general ENT surgeries, he offers a full range of facial cosmetic procedures.
As a facial plastic surgeon and boardcertified otolaryngologist – an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist – Dr. Zach ary Zimmerman does all of this and more at Beloit Health System’s NorthPointe Health and Wellness Campus, 5605 E. Rockton Road, Roscoe, Ill., and at Beloit Clinic, 1905 E. Huebbe Pkwy, Beloit.

“It helps patients live their best lives, especially in their golden years,” he says. “Some people are really bothered by a mole on their face, or a scar they have from an accident, and being able to re store that confidence in people is what made me want to be a facial plastic sur geon. It allows people to forget their past catastrophic injuries or trauma.”
Patients don’t always need a func tional or medical reason to seek treat ment from Zimmerman. Oftentimes, facial plastic surgery is about helping patients both cosmetically and emotion ally, he says.

Some people require facial reconstruc tion due to skin cancer or a trauma they experienced.
