Falling for Autumn

I

t’s always bittersweet to see summertime wane, but a Midwest autumn soon makes us forget our grief. It’s poetic that warm weather goes out in a blaze of orange, red and gold as if desperately clinging to warmth before cool colors prevail. (Winter hues sparkle with their own subtle beauty, but let’s don’t rush things.) Autumn charms all of our senses, from the sounds of crunching leaves and honking geese to the eye candy of orange pumpkins and red vines. Pots of soup and chili bubble on our burners again, thrilling our tastebuds and filling our homes with feel-good aromas. Snuggling close to loved ones – both two- and four-legged – feels extra good by a fireplace or under the cozy blankets we pull out from storage. Many of us also like the feeling of restored order as routines replace erratic summer schedules. And certain scents, such as sharpened pencils, urge us forward to learn and grow and work harder than we did when poolside lounging beckoned. A sense of community saturates autumn as we settle in, vacations behind us, to gather for fall sports, festivals and farmers markets rich with new harvests. Opportunities for outings only expand during autumn. We could fill every inch of these pages with fall event announcements, from concerts to nature walks. Personally, fall is my favorite time to visit zoos because, well, they smell better in cool weather! Our many forest preserves and parks are resplendant in autumn. Too, fall is when many performing and visual arts groups launch new seasons. Our region has an embarrassment of riches, when it comes to creative arts events we can enjoy. Smart people will also do some Christmas shopping in October, before crowds and weather grow worse. This is especially good advice this year, as supply chain problems persist and shortages of certain gift items are expected. Please keep in mind that buying from locally owned stores is exponentially better for our local economy than big-box shopping or online shopping from out-ofstate retailers who have no stake in our community’s future. The joy really is in the journey, so have a great fall week! ❚ Janine Pumilia SLW Editor

Your Home & Garden

Now’s the Time to Winterize Your Home

By Peggy Werner

N

obody wants to think about winter yet, but taking steps now to get your house ready for winter can save you money and keep your family safe and warm. Start at the top, says Mike Callahan, President of Comfort 1st Installation, 612 Harrison Ave., who manages a group of energy performance contractors. “Check the attic for adequate ventilation and insulation,” he says. “About 90 percent of homes are under-insulated, which can cause energy loss and frozen pipes.” This is also a good time of year to have the roof checked for loose and missing shingles, and to make sure vent stacks and chimneys are well-sealed. Gutters full of leaves can damage the roof, siding and wood trim. When water gets backed up, it freezes into ice dams that can destroy the roof and cause water to leak indoors.

If you have a woodburning stove or fireplace, have it inspected and cleaned to remove the buildup of creosote, nests, and anything else that shouldn’t be in a chimney, says Brad Vander Heyden, president of Advanced Chimney Systems, 3486 Lonergan Dr., Rockford. Inspectors check all chimney parts, including the liner, damper, bricks, cap and spark screen, to ensure they’re in place and in good condition. “A creosote buildup is dangerous because it could lead to a chimney fire or, in rare cases, cause a house to catch on fire,” Vander Heyden says. When it comes to preparing for cold temperatures, weather stripping for doors and plastic for windows offer a lot of bang for the buck, says Paul Nicholson of Nicholson Hardware, 1131 2nd Ave.

Tell them you saw it in ...

“You can usually hear or feel air leaks in windows and a plastic cover over windows from the inside is very effective, especially in older homes, where windows may not be the most energy efficient,” Nicholson says. “Doors are very important because they’re constantly being opened and closed,” he adds. “Most people can tell if weather stripping is worn and needs to be replaced or if the rubber seal is cracked and gaps are evident.” ❚

Inspiration & Worship

His Prayer for Us

A

beautiful prayer is found in John 17. Jesus prays it shortly before he is arrested. He prays for himself and for his disciples, but he also prays for us – those who would someday hear and believe his message in the future (verse 20). Read the whole chapter and notice the intimate tone. Here’s a portion. (John 17:8-16, 20-23 NIV) ...For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world ... “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” ❚

Inc. and Midland Wealth Management. So how did Rockford residents come to possess this 155-acre gem with its many rare trees? It began with landscape architect William Lincoln Taylor, who established the land as Rockford Nursery in 1910 and nurtured many experimental plantings that still thrive today. The Klehm family bought the nursery in 1968 and owned it until 1985. Realizing its botanic value, the Klehms generously donated it to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, with the stipulation it be maintained as an arboretum. It has an assortment of plant life unlike any other natural area in the U.S. Today Klehm operates as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit in partnership with the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County. Its mission is to maintain a living museum for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of all people. Learn more at Klehm.org. ❚

all 2021 marks the 40th year that Discovery Center Museum has been helping children discover the joy of learning. To commemorate this milestone, it’s celebrating with multiple special events, membership giveaways and social media posts featuring photos and testimonials from members and guests over the years. Forty years ago, Discovery Center Museum was brought to life by an energetic group from the Junior League of Rockford and the Rockford Area Arts Council who believed children in Rockford deserved a place that would ignite their curiosity about science through hands-on interactive exhibits. These trailblazers didn’t know all the science behind play and brain development, but they knew that children learned best through hands-on interactions and they wanted to find ways to complement what was being taught in the classroom, with a particular focus on science. At the

time, children’s museums and science centers only existed in major cities. This group of innovators was looking to meld the two into a children’s science museum right in the heart of Rockford. In its first year of operation, Discovery Center had 20 exhibits, all built by local residents in their garages and basements. The museum was housed downtown in the old post office building where the Rockford Park District offices are now. After several years of growing attendance, museum leaders knew they needed a bigger, permanent home. Partnering with the Rockford Park District, they moved into the current location in 1991 – a former Sears store building owned by the Rockford Park District. Since 1991, Discovery Center has expanded several times, adding new exhibit space, new classrooms and a traveling exhibit hall. In the four decades that followed its opening, Discovery Center has served

Heed Your Body’s Warnings W

B y To n i R o c h a hat’s the one good thing about pain? It motivates us to seek treatment faster. In the case of orthopedic treatment, the sooner we seek it, the sooner we can return to a healthy, active lifestyle, says Dr. Kenneth Klein, a nonsurgical orthopedic specialist with Beloit Health System. “Many of my patients are moderately active but get involved in some kind of activity – sports, gardening or yard work perhaps – for which they are not conditioned,” Klein says. “I call them the weekend warriors. These injuries would include sprains, tendon pulls, dislocations and more severe injuries such as a torn meniscus or rotator cuff.” Another group of his patients suffer traumatic injuries from accidents, falls and other unavoidable situations. These patients may come in with broken collarbones, fractures or dislocations.

“The third group are those who have spent years in work and recreational activities that have led to wear on knee, hip, elbow and shoulder joints,” he says. “Over time, not only do these joints become chronically painful but arthritis has also settled into the damaged cartilage surrounding the joints.” All treatment begins with a thorough understanding of the patient’s history, potential causes of pain and overall physical condition. Usually by the end of an initial exam, Klein feels he has a fairly good idea of what is wrong, sometimes without need for X-rays, CAT scans or MRIs. “I believe this is critical to successful treatment,” Klein says. “It’s difficult to fix the problem without knowing exactly what the patient was doing that might have cause it. Communication is a vital part.” Once the diagnosis is made, Klein

determines a treatment program that may include physical therapy, vitamins and supplements, pain management medications, and oral or injected medications to reduce inflammation and swelling. “All of these are used to help patients heal themselves without surgery,” Klein says. “The goal is to work closely with patients to get them back to their normal lifestyles, regardless of age.” ❚

Trick or Treat? Beware Sealcoat Scammers By Peggy Werner

I

t’s that scary time of year when scam artists prey upon homeowners and trick many of them into making unneeded repairs. They may also do shoddy work at a price that costs more in the long run than dealing with a legitimate company. “A lot of people are going door-todoor with flyers, telling people what they need and offering cheap prices, but what they don’t tell you is about their cheap, watered-down product, bad workmanship and lack of guarantees,” says Larry Lazzerini, owner of Premier Pavement Solutions, 5059 Contractors Drive in Loves Park. “And if you have any questions or problems, they’re gone.” In business for more than 35 years, Premier Pavement Solutions is a full-service asphalt company that specializes in seal coating, infrared repairs, striping and markings, asphalt maintenance, crack

filling, concrete and pavement contracting, pothole repair, collapsed drains, snowplowing and salting. The “Premier difference,” says Lazzerini, is him going to each home, before and after a job is completed, to make sure a customer is getting what they need and that the job is done right. A specially formulated Seal Master Brand sealcoat is made exclusively for the local company at the manufacturer in Streamwood, Ill., and comes with a letter of authenticity. Latex and sand are added to the product to make it stronger, more flexible, more durable, and to give it a slip-resistant texture. “Not all sealer is the same,” says Lazzerini. “Most basic sealers don’t have

the additives necessary for the best protection. And some people will even take good sealer and water it down to make it go farther,” he says. A good sealer applied to a new asphalt driveway every other year can double the life of the driveway and make it last for more than 20 years, he says. What to Know When Choosing a Fireplace By Paula Hendrickson

S

nuggling up in front of a cozy fire is one of the true joys of Midwestern winters but most homeowners don’t want to chop wood or clean up ashes. “We still do some wood-burning units, but the majority of people want gas,” says Kevin Obee, general manager of Benson Stone, Rockford. “Gas units have come a long way in the past 20 years to the point where they look very real.” Most modern units can be vented through an exterior wall or be retrofitted into existing fireplace openings. Along with deciding what your new hearth will look like and where to place it, your most important choice is whether you want an open-vent fireplace, a direct-vent insert, gas logs or an electric fireplace. A new fireplace is a brand-new unit where one never existed; inserts are sealed systems that pull air from outdoors (in-

stead of your furnace-heated room air) and send exhaust directly outdoors. Gas logs with glowing “embers” can be found in both open-vent and direct-vent systems. Each system has pros and cons and a sales expert can explain them to you. While both open-vent and directvent systems will exhaust fumes outdoors, open vent systems – like traditional masonry fireplaces – draw in room air to feed the flames. This approach is less efficient than a sealed, direct-vent system that pulls air from outside your home. Obee estimates that, given current natural gas prices, running 80,000BTU gas logs in an open-vent fireplace adds about 30 cents per hour to your gas bill. “They’re roughly 0 percent efficient, because a typical masonry fireplace is gaining as much heat as it’s losing, but you’re only paying a dollar every three hours to enjoy a fire. You turn it off, set

Tell them you saw it in ...

your damper and it’s no big deal.” On the other hand, direct-vent gas inserts in the 25,000-40,000BTU range are between 80-85 percent efficient. He usually runs his own fireplace on the high setting and says it doesn’t cost a penny to run. “The fireplace essentially serves as a zone space heater and it reduces how long the furnace runs. It actually saves me money every single time I use it, versus using my furnace to heat the same space,” says Obee. ❚

Non-Invasive Pain Relief Treatment Introduced By Peggy Werner

C

ircle of Wellness is always looking for the newest advances in technology to help people control their pain, while avoiding surgery and medications, says Leila MacQueen, founder of the business located at 3626 E State St., Rockford. In recent months, she’s added equipment, products and services to help people pursue pain control and overall better living. The Stem Cell Machine, a non-invasive way to treat painful musculoskeletal problems, degenerative conditions and chronic pain, is one of the newest items at Circle of Wellness. “This machine is FDA-approved and we’re the only ones who have it,” says MacQueen. “The non-surgical treatment can help eliminate pain, restore mobility, and significantly improve a person’s quality of life, when used with other medicine and treatments,” she says. High-energy soundwaves are applied

to an injured or painful area to encourage healing by enhancing blood circulation and repairing damaged tissue at the cellular level. Beneficial effects are often experienced in one or two treatments, she says. People with plantar fasciitis, muscle pain, carpal tunnel, shoulder injuries, tendonitis and arthritic joints are helped by this treatment, she says. The clinic also has Cynosure Laser Treatment for the removal of hair and spider veins, and to treat scars, brown spots and sun-damaged skin. This machine does hair removal on all skin types of skin, she says. Spider veins and old veins causing discoloration can also be removed. The machine also helps to smooth out top layers of skin damaged by sun and treats facial lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin color due to aging. In addition, MacQueen has added a full line of chemical-free and metal-free

organic products for skin and hair that include essential oils in their ingredients. ER Body Care is in the process of developing a full skincare line, including a face cleanser, toner, moisturizer and products for acne and anti-aging, which she will also carry when available. “I started using these products myself. I’ve tried a lot of brands and I like these the best because you don’t need a large amount to get a big result. And they smell good because they contain essential oils.” ❚

The Natural Land Institute (NLI) will celebrate Oak Awareness Month with an OAKtober Hike on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Burr Oak Valley Nature Preserve, located across the street from Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, 7404 Elevator Road, Roscoe, Ill. Hikers will be led on a guided tour throughout the rolling hills of the preserve by NLI staff, who will talk about the ongoing restoration work in the wooded areas and prairies, the importance of oak
