OVERVIEW. The Melbourne CBD laneways are a perfect scene for a fashion shoot especially for the Autumn and Winter time. I chose the concept of urban photography as the urban scene is coercive with everyday life for viewers to be able to connect. The style my model will be promoting is smart casual, men’s street wear. The outfit will be versatile for everyday and semi-formal wear. The desired look is to be effortless but fashionable which will be suitable for Men in mid 20’s to mid 30’s. My campaign is to appeal to those who love comfort but also want to look well put together no matter where they go. This will appeal to consumers of any kinds of lifestyle as the smart casual style is the median between formal and informal. In specification, my model portrays men who are easy going, mellow and laid-back but have businesses to attend to. He would be someone who works, makes time and takes care of himself, a perfect definition of a balanced lifestyle. He finds confidence when looking at his best but also prefers comfort above anything else. He’s what you’d specify as ‘cool,’ ‘composed,’ and ‘masculine.’

The definition of Urban is in relating to, or characteristic of a town or city. I am a person who is an enthusiasts and takes pride of where I come from, the City of Melbourne. As common as the location may be, it was chosen in order to provide a glimpse of the city I come from. I chose the final shot to be Degraves St as I personally believe it portrays a general ambiance of Melbourne.

LOCATION C.

DEG RAV ES ST REET, M EL BOU RN E 3000 (1.0 K M)

Parking: There are parking spaces available just about anywhere in Melbourne CBD, which are very accessible for all types of people including the disabled. This includes street parking, car parks, and outlet car parks. Conveniently enough, the model resides within the CBD allowing the photographer to leave his car the residential parking, free of charge. Amenities: The CBD provides many toilets, seating areas, shopping concessions and pharmacies in case of any emergencies or last minute needs. The makeup artist was able to find a space to do the makeup, the model had areas to change and the team had plenty to areas needed for a break and food.

LOCATION A, B & D. The locations from RMIT were generally a 10 - 20 minute travel by tram and were all within the free tram zone. All locations were with 1.0km - 2.0km which suited the brief’s requirements very well.

Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000 (1 km) Brunetti: 250 Flinders Lane Melbourne 3000 (1 km)

Medibank Head Office: 720 Bourke St, Docklands 3008

I decided to also explore other areas of Melbourne CBD. Flinders Lane gave a similar ambiance that Degraves St provided, however, the area was very busy at the time and we did not want to disturb busy Melbournians going about their day. We also resided at Brunetti that was along the lane, which had excellent interior, lighting and ambiance, great for candid shots. After shooting around Degraves St and Flinders Lane we headed towards the corporate area at Docklands. We found an area in the Medicare Head Office which had a lot of greenery and lighting which really brought out the urban feel of the clothing. All in all, I believe the Melbourne CBD is a great area to shoot especially the laneways as they portray a very soulful Melbourne ambiance which will appeal to consumers in mid 20’s - 30’s. The laneways were very complimentary to the autumn/winter theme as the area was generally hidden from the sunlight. The location had a very personal touch, however, I do believe that there are others out there that can relate and connect with the area which will be good for branding. Customers wearing the clothes will feel comfortable, fashionable and confident as they stroll down the streets of Melbourne in its feel-good, homey nature.

WEATHER. MAX: 21 MIN: 16 The weather that was forecasted for this day was perfect for our shoot. It rained in the early morning and there were short periods of precipitation in which was perfect as we resided at our indoor location, Brunetti. Overall, the day was very cloudy and towards the late afternoon was when the sun started surfacing from the clouds. We were able to get perfect lighting with all conditions of the weather and the photographer was able to experiment and adapt with the inconsistency of Melbourne weather which I’m very pleased with.

REVIEW

I am extremely satisfied with the print, especially for a small fee of $2.50. Although the paper may not be suitable for photos, the outcome is quite good and I would definitely recommend it for someone who needs last minute printing on the spot. The photo came out slightly darker than the original digital file but there’s no fuss in that but is something to take into consideration next time. Overall, it is cheap, quick and accessible as it’s near RMIT, would definitely comeback for more printing.

EVALUATION.

Nothing can express how extremely pleased I am with the final photo shot. It portrays my concept very well and it is very much like something I have imagined. It was a tough decision choose between many shots and I am more than satisfied with the final result. The final image was chosen because the fashion style was nicely displayed and the model is well situated within the photo. His pose is very relaxed and the detailing of how the jacket drapes over his left shoulder, allowing him to display his watch seems be very effortless yet sophisticated. I believe this photo is a very depicted Melbournian style shot due to it’s ambiance. The setting is quite mono-tonal which gives an overall autumn/winter touch suitable for the brief. This also allows the motorcycle and flowers to have a great colour contrast which brings the whole piece a bit of life, accent and touch. During post production I added some extra colours to accentuate the desired ambiance and to also give a bit of a prism effect. The speckled detailing on the photo also gives a bit of still-life and in-the-moment feels to the photo.

Some improvements would be to get things done as early as possible so I wouldn’t have to rush the editing process. I should’ve also done more shoots with different outfits as well. But all-in-all, I believe my performance exceptionally organised, especially with liaising with the Team. Personally, I am a very detail-oriented person and I made sure everything was well thought-out and planned. Generally, I am a very quiet person but this time round I was able to network with my Team very well and I will be keeping in touch with them after this photoshoot as it was the greatest

pleasure working with them.

“

Nancy prepared an extremely successful and well organised shoot. Her ideas were portrayed clearly to me with the use of a mood board which encapsulated the precise feeling, lighting, style of the shots that were to be aimed for. With the use of some rough sketches she showed me the sort of composition she wanted to try. Prior to the shoot Nancy organised a few Team meetings in which we were able to network and bond. We discussed the possible styling of the model, Jerinel, and which potential locations we could utilise to achieve ideal results with each style. Time management was also very well organised. She selected the optimal time slot for all 3 of us based on an availability which we provided her in advance. She began the styling at 1pm as planned and we commenced to head to the first destination at 1:30pm and finished all the shooting at four different locations before 5pm. Throughout the shoot Nancy bought us cake and coffee as both props for the photos, as well as for nourishment to help us get through the day. She has a very caring nature which was shown by the way she took care us throughout the shoot and even after as she organised a team dinner after the shoot. During dinner, the team sat down and checked through the photos to pick which shots should be used through a process of elimination and we were able to narrow it down to a selection of shots. This process involved a double approval method where if Nancy and I were to agree that the photo was of sufficient quality we would keep it. This way we managed to keep quality control while minimising influence of personal preference or bias. Ultimately, the shoot which Nancy organised was very well planned, with a very detailed idea briefing and was overall very successful. I am hoping to work with her soon in the near future. - Joe Wang

Joe was an exceptional photographer who brought everything to life. Although he had my ideas implanted in his head, he was able to add his own personal style which I had scouted him for. He was extremely co-operative, patient and proactive, I would love to team up with him again as he’s also very work driven. There is not doubt that I will work with Joe again as he’s also become a great friend to me as well.

Jerinel was also an exceptional team member especially the way he displayed professionalism in street wear was very evident. He asked many questions during the shoot to make sure I was getting the desired look that I wanted, he was a very proactive member and I would recommend him in an instance. Jerinel was the highlight of the photoshoot day as he would always lift our moods with many jokes and laughter, he’s definitely someone that is great company to have.
