OVERVIEW. Growing up as a first generation Australian Chinese, an asian grocery store has always been a familiar place for as long as I can remember. Between the tiny aisles, the musty smells and the endless supplies of Pocky and other childhood favourite snacks, made me feel like it was a special place that had everything we needed. It was almost like second home to me as it provided us ingredients we couldn’t get from your typical supermarket which was something that had helped us continue growing with our culture here in Melbourne. With this concept I wanted to incorporate an Asian Grocery for my location fashion lifestyle shoot. In order to recreate the nostalgia I decide to feature a female and a male model who will be wearing retro streetwear to bring back the early 2000’s era into scene. The outfits will be something comfortable but also stylish at the same time which is suitable from mid teens to 30’s. This fashion style will appeal to those who have a similar aesthetic and is interested in retro fashion. My models portray young adults who still want to enjoy their youth before it lasts. They like to experiment with their style, play around with colours and simply does not care what other people think. This campaign will attract to people who are carefree and just want to have fun.

Parking: There are parking spaces available just about anywhere in Melbourne CBD, which are very accessible for all types of people including the disabled. This includes street parking, car parks, and outlet car parks. There is street parking available just in front of the store and nearing areas. Amenities: The CBD provides many toilets, seating areas, shopping concessions and pharmacies in case of any emergencies or last minute needs. The makeup artist was able to find a space to do the makeup, the model had areas to change and the team had plenty to areas needed for a break and food. The store was near QV which had all the things listed.

LOCATION B & C The locations from RMIT were generally a 10 minute walk from RMIT. All locations were 550m - 600m away which suited the brief’s requirements very well.

BEHIND THE SCENES

PRINTING: DINKUMS. Address: 460 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3053 Website: www.dinkums.com.au/ Contact: (03) 9349 4355 Open Hours: 8am - 6pm (everyday) Cost: $5.50

REVIEW

I am extremely satisfied with the print, especially for a small fee of $5.50 for two prints. Although the paper may not be suitable for photos, the outcome is quite good and I would definitely recommend it for someone who needs last minute printing on the spot. The photo came out slightly darker than the original digital file but there’s no fuss in that but is something to take into consideration next time. There was quite a bit of traffic this time round but overall it is cheap, quick and accessible and would definitely comeback for more printing.

I am extremely pleased with the outcome of the final photo shot. The photo really captures and portrays the nostalgia that I have whenever I go to an Asian grocery store. With the help of the fashion items and clothing, it really brought out the retrospective element of the shot which helps set the scene to a 90’s era. There were quite a lot of photos to choose from however I am more than satisfied with the final result. The models posed very candidly and naturally while looking at the camera creates a bit of suspense to set the mood. I really like the composition of the photo especially how the models are situated between a small fitted aisle of the store which really captures the setting. For post production I wanted the overall shot to be very contrasted and saturated with colour. I wanted to photo too look like a film-like shot to create more of an outdated look to enhance the concept altogether. The overall production leading to this shot was very rocky as the concept was something very out of the blue. Looking at this photo I am more than happy with it and it truly brings me back to the days I go out grocery shopping with mum.

This time round was very difficult for me to come up with a concept and the production process was a bit rocky. Some improvements would be to not overthink with concepts and to keep working or else things will be too rushed. However, overall I think things were still very organised and well planned out. I made sure to find a team of people to work with very quickly and was able to network with them very well. We are all happy with the outcome of the photoshoot.

Nancy organised this shoot almost a month ahead, providing me with the necessary mood boards and composition drafts she wanted to try for the shoot. As she overcame the hurdle of developing her concept, each depiction of her idea was clarified in all aspects with me, including the time of the shoot, what lighting we might have, what extra props to test and what locations, giving me a solid foundation on what gear I needed to bring and what shot we were aiming for. This was quite important as it was an indoors low-light shoot, without the appropriate gear prepared ahead of time, dealing with the low-light may have proven difficult. On the day of the shoot Nancy organised a series of locations in which she has scouted and sent us photos ahead of time. She briefed us on the route the models were also pre-informed well of what the goal was, especially during out team meetings. Posing the models and giving me on-shoot descriptions of ideas to test, as well as, considering my ideas and suggestions all flowed meticulously due to Nancy’s open communication. Overall the shoot progressed very smoothy with no issues, everything was pre-planned meticulously and I came into the shoot with a very solid idea what she wanted to achieve.

This helped the overall shoot run really smoothly as Joe was also able to relate and connect to the concept and was able to see my vision very well. He is an extremely proactive partner and friend that I can rely on.
