A unique campus community Happier students than those at UEA are hard to find. The first four National Student Surveys have seen UEA record some of the highest satisfaction scores in the UK. While success in the survey is often hard to pin down, in UEA’s case it must be due in great part to the sheer quality of the teaching and the distinctiveness of the surroundings. Sunday Times University Guide, September 2008 Everything you need to make the most of your time as a student at the University of East Anglia is provided on our beautiful singlesite campus set in more than 300 acres of green parkland on the edge of Norwich. The campus is compact with all teaching and research facilities located within a few minutes walk of the accommodation residences. The University has won more than twenty architectural awards and boasts iconic buildings such as the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts designed by world-renowned architect Lord Norman Foster. Sporting facilities on campus include the University Sportspark which houses an olympic-sized swimming pool and regularly hosts international sporting events. There is also an international standard athletics track, a climbing wall, floodlight football pitches and tennis courts as well as a state of the art fitness gym. The University is also a great place for cultural enthusiasts. The Sainsbury Centre serves a dual function as both a public art gallery and our School of World Art Studies and Museology. Lord and Lady Sainsbury donated their personal collection of world art to the University in 1973 and the Sainsbury Centre first opened its doors to visitors in 1978.

It features a permanent collection of art work spanning 5,000 years with modern work by artists such as Henry Moore and Francis Bacon sitting alongside art from the ancient Mediterranean, Africa and the Americas. The University also hosts a biannual International Literary Festival which has included famous names such as Ian McEwan and Kazuo Ishiguro (both Man Booker Prize winners and alumni of the MA Creative Writing programme.) For music lovers the Students’ Union frequently hosts many top international acts from the music world on campus as well as classical concerts performed by students themselves. Artists that have played at the University include Oasis, Robbie Williams and The Killers. The University Chaplaincy provides a centre for quiet reflection, worship and conversation between students and staff of all faiths. Prayer facilities for Muslim students are also available in the Islamic Prayer Centre on campus. A purpose-built campus Medical Centre provides a full range of medical services for students and staff. There is also a pharmacy and a dental service as well as an on-site nursery for babies and children from six weeks old to school age.

There are many restaurants on campus ranging from the beautiful Garden Restaurant in the Sainsbury Centre to DolcHe Vita, our new espresso bar located at the centre of campus. In addition there is the University Pub which serves the most economical drinks in the region and is a great place to meet friends and socialise. The new INTO centre also features international cuisine seven days a week. Recently the library has doubled in size to include more than one million books and journals with more than 1,200 study places. Additionally there is a 24-hour IT area and a free wireless network available both inside the library and on other areas of campus. Our Dean of Students’ Office provides a full range of student services to all students including a dedicated team of International Student Advisers. They arrange a programme of activities to help you settle into life at the

University and provide services such as advising on employment and visa regulations, financial advice, childcare provision and English language support.

The Students’ Union The Students’ Union (www.ueastudent.com) is extremely active in organising numerous activities and events for the student community as well as clubs and societies for different hobbies. Joining a club or society is the ideal way to make friends with students from both the UK and other international students. The Union also exists to represent all students and has an Advice Centre which helps with many issues including finding part-time employment. Some examples of clubs and societies include football, mountain biking, ultimate frisbee, international society, art and drama.

“I chose the University of East Anglia for its unique approach to providing holistic education along with a fresh integrated curriculum. My time here has been thoroughly enjoyable with inspirational staff, friendly colleagues and comprehensive facilities.” Jared Ching, MPharm, Pharmacy

International excellence in research and teaching The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) have confirmed the University of East Anglia as one of the leading research institutions in the UK. The University offers around 180 undergraduate courses and 140 postgraduate courses across 23 Schools of Study grouped into four faculties: Arts and Humanities, Health, Science and Social Sciences. Leading the way Since its founding in 1963 the University has been internationally recognised for its multidisciplinary courses and innovative approach. The first department of environmental sciences in the UK was founded here in 1967 followed in the 1970s by the first Master’s course in creative writing and one of the first independent departments of international development. More recently, one of the UK’s newest medicine departments was created in 2002 followed by the first new School of Pharmacy in the UK in more than 30 years in 2003. INTO University Partnerships Ltd and the University of East Anglia worked together to create the first joint venture International Student Centre in the UK in 2006.

Flexible courses “Teaching assessments have been uniformly good, and there is a host of national and world class research ratings.” Virgin Alternative Guide

As a student you will be assigned to one of our academic Schools of study (departments) based in the faculties. Your school will be your academic base and main point of contact with university staff. Many of our degree courses allow students to take units in other schools of study to encourage interdisciplinarity – the study of a combination of different subjects. In this way our students develop a strong foundation in their chosen field of study and can either continue to specialise or diversify into related subjects. At postgraduate research

level several research groups also cross over different schools of study and for example our Centre for Competition Policy includes academic staff from the Schools of Economics, Law, Business and Politics. The University is also part of the Norwich Research Park (NRP) which includes the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the internationally reputed John Innes Centre and the Institute for Food Research. Due to the close collaboration of the institutes of the NRP, Norwich has one of the greatest concentrations of highly-cited researchers in the UK – bettered only by London, Cambridge and Oxford. Furthermore, with externally funded research projects worth £125 million the University is pleased that the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise show that 87% of the university’s research activity was deemed to be of international standing.

Study abroad We also have more than 100 students coming from all over the world to study for a semester or year within their undergraduate degrees. The University is pleased to support opportunities for students to experience first-hand education in a different environment. For further information please visit www.uea.ac.uk/international/studyabroad

Norwich is the first English city to be admitted to the prestigious World League of Historical Cities, which includes Accra, Hanoi, Istanbul, Kyoto, Mexico City, Nicosia, Prague, Quebec City, Varanasi and Xian.

Norwich – A fine city Less than two hours from London and one hour from Cambridge, Norwich has all the facilities of a major commercial and cultural centre and yet still manages to be a friendly, easy-going and safe place to live. A mixture of beautiful medieval and modern architecture results in a city with a vibrant and youthful outlook.

The city boasts 1,500 historic buildings and has one of the largest walled medieval city centres in the UK. There are two cathedrals, a 12th century Norman castle as well as stunning contemporary architecture such as the Forum, which houses one of the finest regional public libraries in the country. Everywhere in Norwich you will see medieval and modern buildings co-existing in one of England’s most unspoilt cities.

“Norwich provides the best of both worlds: the allure of a peaceful town and a happening night life – this creates the perfect environment!” Elisa Khong, BSc Accounting and Finance

Norwich is consistently voted one of Britain’s top cities for quality of life, prosperity and shopping, with a rich variety of entertainment on offer. The city has many theatres, cinemas, restaurants and nightclubs and is home to more than 300 pubs and bars. ‘A church for every week and a pub for every day’ is a famous local claim for Norwich reflecting the fabulous legacy of medieval churches which adorn almost every street corner of the city. The city centre is only a 15-minute bus ride from the campus and the University bus passes are among the cheapest in the UK. Between the city centre and the campus is an area called the ‘Golden Triangle’ where many of our students live and where you’ll find lively and cosmopolitan pubs, shops and cafés.

Shopping Frequently referred to as one of Britain’s top ten shopping cities, Norwich features a unique blend of independent stores, small specialist shops, major high street chains and the country’s largest open-air market set amidst a maze of pretty medieval cobble-stoned lanes and alleys. There are shops and restaurants that cater to all the world’s tastes, cultures and cuisines, including supermarkets selling Asian foodstuffs.

Business Norwich is known as a city which is home to many global financial services brands including Aviva, Virgin Money and the Moneyfacts group. Manufacturing was once an important industry in Norwich and Colman’s of Norwich still manufactures the famous yellow Colman's English mustard in the city. The £275 million Chapelfield development in the medieval city centre has recently boosted the retail sector with a state of the art shopping centre and apartment complex.

Vibrant city life: “The most complete medieval city in Britain has everything you could desire of a vibrant regional capital, and is one of the UK’s favourite cities.” The Guardian/Observer Travel Awards Oct 2008 Norwich Cathedral

Arts and culture

The perfect location

The city centre has a wide variety of arts and entertainment venues, many of which offer discounts to students. For film lovers there are three multiplex cinema venues and one of the finest art house cinemas in the East of England – Cinema City.

One of the best things about the University of East Anglia is its location, situated as it is on the edge of both the city and countryside. The long Norfolk coastline is home to wildlife sanctuaries and beautiful beaches, as well as classical English countryside, interlaced with sleepy medieval villages, bustling market towns and stately homes. One of England’s most beautiful national parks, The Broads, a series of rivers and lakes spanning the region, is also right on our doorstep and a haven for sailing and boating enthusiasts. Norwich has good bus and rail connections to the rest of the UK and having its own international airport ensures easy access to the Continent with connections to 200 cities worldwide.

Norwich has six theatres including the Theatre Royal, the most successful regional theatre in the country, which puts on major musical acts, comedy, opera and ballet. There are a number of museums and galleries in the city including the contemporary Norwich Gallery and the Castle Museum, which has touring exhibitions, as well as a gallery devoted to works by artists of the Norwich School. Norwich City Football Club is conveniently located in the city centre next to the train station, a short bus ride from the University. It is in the top ten of the best supported clubs in the country and currently competes in the Championship division.

London is less than 2 hours away by direct, regular intercity trains to London Liverpool Street Station, the perfect solution for an evening out or a weekend break in the capital.

A recent survey found that the region of East Anglia has the least crime, best health and amongst the highest employment rates in the country.
