Programmes 08

The University of Liverpool is a prestigious, research-led, Russell Group university offering postgraduate taught courses and research opportunities in a huge range of areas including Biotechnology, Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Management, Physics, Physiology, Town Planning and Tropical Medicine. Our Taught Masters programmes usually last for one year and start in September (there is no January intake). Research degrees take one to two years for an MPhil qualification and three to four years for a PhD. Start dates for research degrees are more flexible but many students still start in September. To see the full list of postgraduate opportunities, please see our Postgraduate Prospectus. You can view this online or order your own copy from our website at: www.liv.ac.uk/ study/register

The Postgraduate e-Brochures contain more detailed information on the content of taught Masters courses and current research activity. How to apply 12/13 The easiest way to make an application is to apply online. Go to www.liv.ac.uk/ study/postgraduate/ applying/online If you are unable to apply online, you can apply by downloading a copy of the Postgraduate Application Form from the University’s website at: www.liv.ac.uk/ study/postgraduate/applying/ and returning it to us by post or e-mail. Your local Overseas Representative will also have paper copies of the application form. See pages 28-29 for Representatives’ details.

We cannot assess your application until we receive your form and all the supporting documentation including: School or college transcripts or certificates. University/degree transcripts and certificates. Evidence of English language ability. A personal statement explaining why you want to undertake the programme and why you feel you are a suitable candidate. Two references. Information on how you will fund your studies. A research proposal (if applicable).

RESEARCH DEGREES In the UK, undertaking an MPhil, PhD or MD degree entails completing a unique research project under the supervision of academic staff in your department. Some departments will list research projects for students to apply for, but mostly, the title for your research project is suggested by you. It is therefore important that before you apply, you check that the research interests of academic staff in the relevant department at Liverpool are similar to the type of research you would like to undertake.

You should outline your chosen research project in the research proposal which needs to be submitted with your application. HELP WITH YOUR APPLICATION For more information about applying for postgraduate study, you can use the following resources: Our website at: www.liv.ac.uk/study/ postgraduate/ Our representatives in your country – see pages 28-29. A British Council office in your country – www.britishcouncil.org

Tuition fees 14/15

All students are charged a fee to study at university in the UK.

British and EU students pay a ‘home’ student fee with the UK Government also providing funding to the University. International students pay an ‘overseas’ fee. This is higher than the home fee as the University does not receive funding from Government for international students. If you are not sure whether you are a ‘home’ or ‘international’ student, perhaps because you hold a British passport but have lived abroad, please refer to advice pages on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website at: www.ukcisa.org.uk/ student/fees_student_support.php FEES FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES Our fees for postgraduate masters programmes are listed on the next page. Our fees for postgraduate research programmes were not available at the time of printing but can be found on our website at www.liv.ac.uk/ international/moneyand-scholarships/ tuition-fees.htm

RESEARCH COSTS AND FEES For some research projects, there may also be an additional “research support fee” to cover the costs of materials or facilities used (such as liquid nitrogen for experiments or access to exclusive library collections). Research support fees will be calculated by the department when research projects have been agreed and will be outlined in offer letters. Fees are correct at time of going to press; any changes will be noted in offer letters and on the website below: www.liv.ac.uk/international/money-andscholarships/tuition-fees.htm Please note – the School of Tropical Medicine sets its own fees and these can be found on the School’s website at: www.liv.ac.uk/lstm

FIXED FEE GUARANTEE Where the programme duration is more than one year, the University offers a fixed fee guarantee for all full time students from outside the European Union (EU). This means that you will pay the same tuition fees each year, enabling you to plan your finances effectively. FEES FOR POSTGRADUATE MASTERS PROGRAMMES BY SUBJECT AREA The fees listed below represent the proposed fees for postgraduate masters programmes for the academic year 2011-12 at the time of going to press. Please check website www.liv.ac.uk/international/ money-and-scholarships/tuition-fees.htm for confirmation of fee levels. Additional research support costs may be applied to some laboratory based programmes. Note that our Regional Awards, offering a fee reduction of £1,000, are available for new self-funded international students on masters level courses. Living costs 16

LIVING COSTS PER YEAR Of course this will vary according to your lifestyle. If you are bringing your family to the UK your living costs will also be higher. The British Council estimates that you’ll need around £6,000 more per year for your spouse, and a further £2,000 per year for each of your children. However this is a generous estimate for the whole of the UK and the cost of living in Liverpool is actually lower than many other UK cities as demonstrated by the following example. EXAMPLE OF APPROXIMATE MONTHLY COSTS PhD Student Hossam and his Family Hossam is a postgraduate research student and is here in Liverpool with his wife and daughter. His average monthly expenditure is between £800 and £900. He lives in family accommodation on campus, so his daily transport costs are negligible as he can walk to the campus, the city and to his daughter’s school. Hossam decided to buy a car mainly for weekends so he and his family could explore the local region and visit other areas of the UK. His monthly expenditure could be broken down as follows: Accommodation £340 per month Food and bills £160 - £200 per month depending on the time of year Laundry £20 per month Leisure/Entertainment £100 per month Car £150 per month (tax, insurance, maintenance and petrol) Please be aware that these costs are approximate and vary depending on a student’s lifestyle and choice of accommodation. You can also have a look at the websites of British supermarkets such as www.tesco.com or www.sainsburys.co.uk to get an idea of typical daily costs.

The overall cost of living is fairly reasonable compared to other similar big cities. I only spent about £5,500 per year, main items are food, clothing and accommodation. NOR ASIKIN TEGOH MALAYSIA, MANAGEMENT SCHOOL

The University of Liverpool offers a range of scholarships and awards for postgraduate international students. Some, like our new Regional Awards, are unlimited and available for all self-funded postgraduate students on Masters programmes. Others, such as the Faculty Scholarships for taught and research students, are competitive and awarded primarily on academic merit. There are some scholarships with very specific eligibility criteria. The tables below outline the various awards available and are split out into general, country specific and subject specific awards and scholarships.

Eligibility criteria, amounts and application deadlines (where necessary) are detailed as appropriate. Further awards for postgraduate research students are still subject to approval and will be published on the website in due course. This information is correct at the time of going to print and may be subject to change. To check which awards or scholarships you are eligible for, visit our funding database at pgf.liv.ac.uk Please note – the School of Tropical Medicine sets its own awards and scholarships so students entering the School are not eligible for those outlined below. Careers and employability 21

Our Careers and Employability Service won several major awards at the 2009 UK Conference of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), including the AGCAS International Award. This award was for demonstrating an outstanding commitment and contribution to working with international students, relevant employers and promoting internationalisation.

Working while you study 22/23

International students are legally allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week during term time. However, the University recommends that students work a maximum of 15 hours per week to ensure that your studies are not affected. During University vacations you are allowed to work full-time. University vacation times are clearly defined for undergraduate students. However, most postgraduate students will usually be working throughout the summer on dissertations or research projects. Vacation time as a postgraduate student therefore generally needs to be agreed between student and department on an informal basis. HOW MUCH CAN I EARN? The current minimum wage in the UK for people aged 18-21 is £4.83 per hour, with people aged 22 or over being paid £5.80 per hour. The following calculations give an indication of how much you could potentially earn during term time and during university vacations. DURING TERM TIME Weekly income for an 18 year old working 15 hours per week for minimum wage: £4.83 x 15 = £72.45 Weekly income for a 22 year old working 15 hours per week for minimum wage: £5.80 x 15 = £87

DURING AGREED VACATION TIME Weekly income for an 18 year old working full time (35 hours per week) for minimum wage: £4.83 x 35 = £169.05 Weekly income for a 22 year old working fulltime (35 hours per week) for minimum wage: £5.80 x 35 = £203 It is important to be aware that any earnings you make in the UK through part-time jobs will supplement your living costs, but cannot be relied on as a source of financial support. You will need to prove that you have all tuition fees and living costs in your bank account before you apply for your visa, and this is especially true now under the new immigration rules. Employment in the UK as a student is mainly for experience and the opportunity to be involved with UK society. JOBS AND EVENTS The Student Development Team on campus to help students find part-time and voluntary work. This team manages the ‘Jobs and Events’ website which advertises part-time jobs available for students both on and off the University campus. To find out more about ‘Jobs and Events’ please see the website: www.liv.ac.uk/careers/jobs

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AMBASSADORS Every year the International Office recruits around 20 students to work as Ambassadors. Ambassadors work alongside the International Recruitment and Relations Team to help provide advice and information to prospective international students. Ambassadors are given an opportunity to get involved in all kinds of interesting projects, including enquiry handling, welcome events, representing the University at exhibitions and events, and providing services for offer holders.

The thing that most appealed to me about this course was the mixture of the practical and theoretical. Coming from an undergraduate degree in Art History, I didn’t want to limit myself to just focusing on issues of curating or museum studies, I wanted to learn more about the philosophy of art and aesthetics too. This MA meant I was able to pursue an area of academic interest and gain valuable work experience. ZAINAB DJAVANROODI MA ART, AESTHETICS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

Working in the UK after you graduate 24

TIER 1 (POST-STUDY WORK) All international students who successfully complete their UK undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses are able to apply to stay in the UK for two years and work full-time. Most types of work can be undertaken once you have this visa. This scheme replaces the International Graduate Scheme. It is a points based scheme and in order to obtain the visa you must fulfil certain requirements. For more information on the Post-Study Work scheme please consult the International Support Team website at www.liv.ac.uk/studentsupport/ist/ poststudywork.htm

I chose to study here because of the excellent reputation of the University of Liverpool in architectural study. The support from tutors has helped me in developing my ideas and I really enjoy the scope of study and learning methods which are very different from my home country. Liverpool is a wonderful and interesting place to discover, no wonder it was named as a European Capital of Culture. SHARONNIZAM AHMAD SHAFANDI MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE
