KAREN PAEDIATRIC CENTRE

There is an overwhelming need for paediatric hospitals in the region as to mitigate the current high infant and mortality rate. Located in Karen, this paediatric hospital was designed as a centre of excellence as to exemplify recommendations for child healthcare as a special group resulting from my final year thesis the paediatric care environment. The socio-physical environment of the design plays a major role in the child's healing process. The hospital is designed around a series of multiple courtyards offering a connection to nature. Play rooms across the centre offer children positive distractions as to trigger positive emotional responses.A sense of control is reinforced through clear color coded wayfinding and opportunites for personalization of patient rooms. The patient room showcases social consideration by providing space for parents to stay with thir children.Colourful sunshading elments keep out solar glare while creating a less institutional facade..Environmental considerations infrom the location of patient rooms with the provision of ample daylight, views and access to play gardens.

Thesis Project | Final Year Project-2017 | Supervisor: Prof Magutu

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Analysis of the site highlights the site forces. E-W orientation to avoid solar glare. Programmes branch out of Main spine

Cirulation around the hospital is defined with a separation of public, ambulance, staff and service

Units staggered to break down mass and allow lighting of circulation spine.

Circulation enhanced to reduce travel distances and connect links between departments.

Visual landmarks introduced to aid in wayfinding

Enclosed spaces create interactive courtyards.

Programme distribution across the site with imporant adjacencies considered to allow for a functional process

Landscaping of open ares to provide a connection to nature and create buffer zones for the hospital. Themed gardens offer different experiences for different users.

MAMBRUI TOURIST TERMINAL

Mambrui,a small in Malindi has been seeing an increase of tourists as the Kenyan coast boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world being a popular tourist destination. A brief was issued calling for the development of a tourist terminal at a beachfront site. The proposed design responds to the extreme climatic conditions of the area with the use of local materials to build thick walls allowing for passive cooling through a high themal mass. The spatial layout of the terminal is based around a central courtyard borrowed from the traditional Swahili house allowing for the cooling of the building through the sea breeze. Screened balconies provide sun shading while allowing breezes through the spaces aiding in regulating temperatures while allowing for visual privacy. The facades reflects historical landmarks from the Malindi area, borrowing the column design from the gazzetted 'House of Columns' one of Malindi's oldest buildings. The exterior is finished in light coloured stucco reflecting away heat from exposed wall surfaces

NAIROBI ART GALLEERY

The city of Nairobi hosts a large number of upcoming artists and collectors and the is a growing need of a variety of functional spaces for them to exhibit their talents. The brief proposed an expansion to the existing Nairobi Art Gallery located off Kenyatta Avenue in order to increase its capacity. The new gallery should provide spaces for presentation, documentation, training and cultural education. The facility is to also create extra revenue generating spaces for artists and collectors a like through cafe's libraries etc. The design of the gallery is informed by an extensive research on spatial and environmental conditions required for the display and exhibition of various arts and crafts, High attention is paid to the lighting conditions of these spaces as some items are sensitive. Most of the galleries are day lit with Harmful solar glare diffused through a dynamic vertical sun shading system designed to mimic the roots of a tree, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a connection to our culture and heritage for national pride. The national flag served as inspiration for the shield designed on the North elevation, a national symbol of Kenya. The columns echo the columns present on the adjacent gallery though with a modern treatment. The white finish represents the blank canvas of an artist.
