Dear Readers, There’s always hockey and we’ve found some interesting stories over the past month that we are hoping you will enjoy. We’ve also welcome a new advertiser--Next Level and Rochester Hockey Academy to our family and urge you to check out their product by visiting their website. You’ll find a familiar name there--Rory Fitzpatrick, a local player who played in Rochester and for the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL. We’re working on updating our email list and ask that each organization provide us with the email addresses of your coaches and Board of Directors. We also would like a logo sent to us in JPEG format (high resolution). This month we managed to check out your websites and used the news we found that would be beneficial to our readers. We would rather you send us your news on a regular basis. We can post to our website as well, and also put a note on Facebook and Twitter. Deadline for the September issue, which begins our second full season as NY Hockey On-Line Magazine, is August 23. Thank you for your continued support and we plan on seeing many of you at the Section meetings this Fall, as well as at your local rink. Sincerely, Randy Schultz Publisher

ver the last 10 years Next Level Strength & Conditioning has built a reputation improving the performance of many of Rochester’s top high school, college and professional athletes. Following the relative success of their camps and programs at local private fitness centers and college campuses in recent years, Next Level opened the doors to their own brand new 5,000 square foot training facility on March 1st. An adjunct to the Thomas Creek Ice Arena in Fairport, the state of the art facility is stocked with the latest in sports performance and hockey specific training equipment, including top of line power racks, Olympic platforms, free weights, slide boards, an off-ice shooting area and much more, ultimately giving Next Level the ability to provide athletes the best training possible year-round. “We take immense pride in offering sound progressions and sequencing that the latest research has proven to yield results,” says Next Level Co-Owner and Head Strength Coach Nate VanKouwenberg. “Coupling that with a closely supervised environment with attention to individually appropriate frequency, volume, and intensity, we have been able to maximize player development and safety while minimizing the risk of injury at the same time. All of our Strength Coaches hold well respected certifications and related degrees, and we keep our athlete to coach ratio extremely low so that we can provide quality instruction and feedback to every player.” “Our staff continues to work successfully to improve athletes from a variety of sports and skill levels, in addition to our new programs for the general fitness crowd, but naturally a large percentage of our athletes are hockey players,” says VanKouwenberg. This comes as no surprise, as the co-location with

Thomas Creek and partnership with the Rochester Hockey Academy, LLC – co-owned by former NHL/ AHL player Rory Fitzpatrick – provide Next Level and RHA the unique opportunity to offer the most comprehensive hockey specific training programs in the Rochester area. Program offerings include on-ice lesson and off-ice training combo packages, team training sessions and the increasingly popular “Total Hockey Training” off-season programs. Total Hockey Training includes regular off-ice and on-ice training sessions for up to 12 weeks during the spring and summer and is offered at the middle school, high school, and college/pro levels. Many of Rochester’s top Professional, College and Junior A players attend this intensive College/ Pro level program, which includes up to 12 hours of on and off-ice training per week, ensuring that players enter the season as strong and conditioned as possible.

A machine was also developed to remove rain from Astro-Turf, when that surface was popular. That machine was credited with saving several World Series games. There are two plants that produce Zamboni’s. There is in Paramount, one in Brantford, Ont. Canada and a distributor in Europe. “We’re small and we like it that way,” said Richard. “We still take special care with each machine that goes out. “I see most of the machines myself before they leave. Once they get my OK, they are sent on their way.” They are sent out into a world that has gone, in some cases, Zamboni crazy. The late cartoonist Charles Schulz used the Zamboni in his “Peanuts” comic strip; Zamboni clubs have been formed; songs have been written about it; even racehorses have been named after Zamboni. “It’s kind of hard to believe,” commented Richard. “I would see the Zamboni,” stated Frank. “They liked what guess Zambonis are special. they saw and began placing orders. “There are still a lot of old models “Before dad knew it he had orders still going out there.” for 16 new machines. When the 1960 Winter Olympics came to Squaw Valley, California, six Zamboni Resurfacers became the first machines of their type to be used in Olympic competition. By the time the ’60 Olympics concluded and the rest of the world had seen the success of the machine, orders for the ice resurfacer were being taken from Western Europe, Australia and Japan. Since that time the Zamboni has been redesigned over and over again. For instance, in 1964 the Jeep was discontinued in favor of a Zamboni-designed chassis that incorporated a quick-dumping tank. Other specialized models have been developed including small machines for studio-sized rinks; non-dumping machines for indoor rinks that lack room for dumping snow; tractor-pulled machines and equipment designed for speed skating ovals.

lthough hockey cards have been around for more than 100 years, only during the past two decades has collecting them become a popular hobby for hundreds of children and adult across the United States and Canada. What began as a simple hobby has turned into a multi-million dollar business for such card companies as Topps, Upper Deck, Score, Collectors Choice, Donruss and Fleer, among others. High-tech and memorabilia have become the name of the game for these hockey card manufacturers. Several cigarette companies issued the first hockey cards between 1910 and 1913. For the record, hockey cards have been around long than football or basketball cards. By the 1920s, candy companies as well as a lone cigarette company were producing hockey cards. Not one of the five sets issued during the ‘20s were made in color. As the decade of the 1930s came in, the Canadian gum companies started distributing cards with their chewing gum. Two other companies, World Wide Game Company and O-PeeChee also made their debut during this

era. The ever-popular Bee Hive photos came into existence late in the 1930s. Following World War II the ‘modern era’ of hockey cards began in 1951-52 and was dominated by two companies, Parkhurst or Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Topps of New York City. Topps had a Canadian affiliate, O-Pee-Chee of London, Ontario.

Hockey Cards -Not Just for Kids! By Randy Schultz

Parkhurst produced hockey cards from 1951 through 1964, with the exception of the 1956-57 NHL campaign. Topps came out with its first set in 1954. Following a two-year layoff, Topps again produced hockey cards from the 1957-58 seasons until the present, with a break for the 1982-84 campaigns. In a strange set up, Topps issued

cards in the 1950s featuring just the American-based teams (including the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers), while Parkhurst featured the two Canadian teams, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs. In the early 1960s Parkhurst added Detroit to their line-up, while Topps produced cards for the remaining three American-based teams. Former NHL star and Hall of Famer, Pat LaFontaine, collected hockey cards as a kid growing up. “ I had a pretty good collection of cards when I was growing up,” recalled LaFontaine. “Little did any of us ever realize how valuable they would become as the years went by.” The former star of the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers, remembered when he saw his cards for the first time. “I really thought it was pretty cool,” said LaFontaine. “You always dream of having your own card someday.

US Premier Hockey League Forms Elite and Empire Junior Divisions

T

he United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL), the Eastern Elite Junior Hockey League and Empire Junior Hockey League have agreed to merge operations into the USPHL. The USPHL will maintain its current 9 team Premier Junior Division and its 16U and 18U Midget Levels and add USPHL Elite and USPHL Empire Divisions to bring the total USPHL League count to five divisions. Upon completion of this process, the USPHL membership will consist of approximately 30 members fielding over 70 teams with a geographic reach that spans the complete Eastern Seaboard. The merger with the Eastern Elite provides an expansion of the USPHL junior hockey footprint to the Southeastern United States, from Virginia to Florida. The purpose of this merger is to extend the USPHL player development model to the rapidly growing southern hockey marketplace through eight extremely successful organizations. Members of the Eastern Elite Division will participate in USPHL Showcases and play the northern USPHL Elite clubs in league play. This format will allow the USPHL southern franchises extensive exposure to NCAA and NHL scouts currently enjoyed by the USPHL. The USPHL Elite Division will also stage a divisional All-Star Game in conjunction with the USPHL Premier Division AllStar Classic. The merger with the Empire Junior Hockey League consolidates the Empire League into a structure which will provide clarity and efficiency in the Eastern Seaboard Junior market. The Empire merger is a natural extension of the USPHL/Eastern Elite merger and will provide all existing Empire Junior League teams their best opportunity to showcase their talents to NCAA hockey programs in the East. The USPHL members have each developed a complete player development model where, at present, over 2,000 boys and girls train, compete and enjoy the sport of ice hockey. These programs go beyond the on-ice

experience to include education, leadership and community service components to help foster a complete student-athlete. The member organizations believe the USPHL will provide the next step in high performance training and competition and will provide unmatched exposure to NCAA hockey programs for young aspiring hockey players. The USPHL will commence competition in September of 2013. Please visit the USPHL website at www.usphl.com or the member organizations for specific information regarding team registration and tryout process.

hen Jack Driscoll skated on the ice back in 1976 for the first ever Spring House League held in the Holiday Twin and Leisure Rinks, little did he re-

Now in its 38th sea--Jack Driscoll son, that Spring House League, better known today as the Dippin’ Dots Spring House League, is in full swing and is bigger and better than ever. While Jack Driscoll still is on the scene, it is his son, Tim, who now runs the operation. “The mission of the Spring House League is to provide hockey players of all ages and skill levels an opportunity to compete versus other skaters of similar experience and ability,” commented Tim. “The Spring House League establishes a fair and open environment where the player can learn the basics of team play as well as improve upon their individual skills.” The Spring House League begins each year with a Rating Session in March, with practices and games beginning

This year saw over 1700 boys and girls participate. “When I began, there were only eight teams participating, mostly boys,” remembered Jack. “I think the word that really spread about the League was the fact that everybody got equal ice time. “Every year the League got a little bigger and a little bigger. When I turned everything over to Tim to run five years ago, we had over 116 teams and over 1600 kids participating. “It’s been like a family run operation throughout the years. My older son, Jack, was involved in the early stages of the program.

McCollum Brings Home The Cup (Calder) By Randy Schultz

A

s a young boy growing up, Thomas McCollum had dreams of winning the Stanley Cup, hoisting the Cup above his head and finally bringing the Cup to his home for family and friends to see. On a mid-July evening, McCollum came one step closer to that being a reality. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the Stanley Cup he brought back to his native Sanborn, NY. Instead he brought back the Calder Cup to his parent’s home and later in the evening had it on display at the Cambria Fire Hall, located near his

home. McCollum is a member of the American Hockey League champion Grand Rapids Griffins. And much like the Stanley Cup winning team in the NHL, the Calder Cup winning AHL club allows each of its players, coaches and staff to have it for a day. While McCollum wasn’t a starting goalie on the team, he was still a part of the first Griffins team to win a Calder Cup. “It was a very long journey, that is for sure,” commented McCollum. “We had a long playoff to get to that championship.

“Your goal every year is to win a championship. That’s why it was nice to be on this team this year.” McCollum just finished his fourth season of professional hockey. Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round (30th player taken overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, McCollum’s journey is trying to make the big club has been a long one. “Every year you start out trying to make the Red Wings,” commented McCollum. “I’ve gone into each training camp trying to do my best and trying to do that all the time. “In the past I’ve been focused on how soon I would get to Detroit. Now I’m simply going to take things one day at a time and just focus on that. “In my first four years I’ve learned that a hockey career is a journey. You can’t worry about when you’re going to get to the NHL. “You need to focus on how you are going to get there. I think if you take things one day at a time you will eventually get to where you want to be.” (Continued on Page 16)

(Dippin’ Dots Con’t from Page 13)

“Unfortunately, he passed away in an auto accident. But he has never been forgotten. “The Spring House League has also had a couple of sponsors over the years. The first company to sponsor it was Tim Horton’s. “Then a couple of years ago ‘Dippin’ Dots’ approached us about sponsoring the League. We said OK and they put their logo on all the jerseys the kids have on during the Spring League.” Tim also pointed out the most important aspect of this League. “It doesn’t matter if a player is skating on his ankles or is a top notch player, they all get equal ice time. There are no benchwarmers in this league. “And I think that is what makes it so special.” Tim also remembers the days growing up and using the dining room table in the family home to figure all the paperwork out. Applications were laid out all over the table and teams were put together using that old fashion method,” re-

called Tim. “We would try and honor any of the requests that would come in,” added Jack. “If a player applied and they wanted to play with their neighbor that they didn’t play with during the winter, we would honor that request. “During the season players move up and down on lines with their teams. It is a constant work in progress.

“We have our rules and we stick by them. It’s the way we’ve done things and it seems to be successful. “But our main objective for our Spring League is for the kids to have fun. That’s been happening for 38 years. “Things like that is what makes this league so special.”

(Hockey Cards Continued from Page 11)

“But when it finally happens, it feels pretty good. But I have to admit that I always looked closely at my cards to make sure they looked OK. “When I got my first card, that’s when I knew that I had officially made it in the NHL. I know that sounds a bit silly. “But it was a great feeling.”

Even legendary and Hall of Fame hockey coach, Scotty Bowman, collected hockey cards. He still collects cards today. “I think I’m a bit more particular in my collecting habits today than years ago,” stated Bowman, who still resides in the Buffalo, NY area. “I look for particular players today. “I still look for the older cards. They mean a bit more to me. “To me, hockey cards are more than just cards, especially the older ones. They are more than just a small piece of cardboard with the picture of a player on one side and stats on the other. “Those are works of art.”

“I’ve learned that a hockey career is a journey.” --Thomas McCollum

(McCollum Continued from Page 14)

McCollum did make it to Detroit, if only for one game, back during the 2010-11 NHL campaign. It was memorable, although not exactly the way McCollum would have written it. It was on March 30, 2011 against the St. Louis Blues. The Red Wings had lost Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard to injuries when McCollum was called up. “We were trailing 5-2 midway through the second period. Starting goalie Joey MacDonald got pulled and I went in.” McCollum faced eight shots, giving up three goals in the process. He was pulled after the second period. “It wasn’t what you dream about,” concluded McCollum. “But I was there and I want to get back again.” The Calder Cup is the second oldest actively awarded professional ice hockey playoff trophy after the Stanley Cup. The trophy is named after

Frank Calder, first president of the NHL, and was first presented in 1937 to the Syracuse Stars. McCollum will be returning to the Red Wings organization for a fifth season in 2013-14. Detroit made a qualifying offer to the Sanborn native and as of press time the final details were being worked out. “I’m really looking forward to being back in Grand Rapids again and getting the season started. I now realize what it takes for a goalie to make it in the National Hockey League. “I’m with a great organization. They have taken their time with me. “I realize that the good goalies develop in the minors and have to spend some time there. I had a tough start to my career. “I’ve taken the rocky road to climb up the Red

Wings ladder. But I still want to prove to them that I can play. “I know I can and I just want to get the chance to prove it. Detroit is giving that to me. “I’m thankful for that and will make the most of my opportunities that will be given to me.”

Central NY’s Cummings Works On Her Dream! by Janet Schultz

K

atelinn Cummings (Binghamton) has a goal--to play on the Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team. She began her career playing for teams in Binghamton and Syracuse, including the Syracuse Nationals Tier I AAA 14 U Team, the Binghamton Blizzard and STAJ. She was also a member of the East Coast Selects 98 at the Pro Hockey Ponytail Tournament. Cummings began skating when she was four years old and after watching Grandpa follow the Binghamton Senators very closely she decided to give hockey a try. This summer she continued working on her dream by trying out for the a select team, making it and playing in the North American Prospects Showcase in Buffalo. NAPS had over 150 teams participating in a four-weekend event. The Showcase featured the top players from North America. Cummings was a member of the East Coast Selects-0 Team. “I’d like to earn a scholarship to play for College at the DI level,” said Cummings. “I’d like a career that involves

both hockey and broadcasting,” she explained. The ninth grader at Maine E Well School in Johnson City also plays Lacrosse and Soccer. “Play hard and take all the advice you can get,” says Cummings. Advice is what she gets from her hockey advisor, Harry Rosenholtz. Rosenholtz helps players make decisions regarding the path they could follow to have a successful hockey and academic career. He has just begun his work with Cummings and sees her as a dedicated player with a lot of tenacity. “She’s a great team player,” said Rosenholtz. “She also has unique hockey skills and speed. “She’s a great kid and strong.” He also sees programs such as NAPS as very beneficial. “This is a place where kids showcase their talent to coaches from New York and Canada,” said Rosenholtz of NAPS. “It’s a good regional event.” When thinking about whether you need a hockey advisor, Rosenholtz

explained that he assists players from “soup to nuts.” He assists players making the decision to play high school, travel or go to a prep school; helps them prepare for SATs and guides them to where they should be for level of talent, as well as academically. With guidance, practice and her natural talent, there’s a good chance that Cummings will fulfill her dream!

News from the Buffalo Sabres Canisius Teams With HARBORcenter

C

anisius College and the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres have formed a unique partnership where the school’s Golden Griffin hockey program will compete and practice in the newly-constructed HARBORcenter, beginning with the 2014-15 season. “This is an exciting day for Canisius College,” said Canisius College President John J. Hurley. “We make yet another big investment in the city we have called home since 1870 as we join with Terry and Kim Pegula and the Buffalo Sabres to help revitalize Buffalo’s downtown, advance the Canalside District and take our championship-hockey program to a whole new level of excellence. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes, alumni and fans to be part of this world-class facility.” HARBORcenter, which is scheduled to open in September 2014, is a $172 million multipurpose hockey and entertainment complex that will sit directly across from the First Niagara Center in Buffalo’s Canalside District. Featured inside the HARBORcenter will be two NHL-size rinks, including a 1,800-seat arena where Canisius will serve as the primary tenant. The Griffs, Buffalo’s only Division I hockey program, will have their own 1,300-square foot state-of-the-art locker room in addition to separate athletic training areas and access to the building’s Center of Excellence, a high-performance training facility which is designed specifically for development in the sport of hockey. “This is an exciting day for our hockey program,” said Canisius College head coach Dave Smith. “Partnering with the Buffalo Sabres in a world-class hockey facility further illustrates the commitment to Division I college hockey by Canisius. This top-notch arena will expose fans to a high level of hockey at a number of levels. It will be a tremen-

dous resource with which to recruit, train and develop hockey players. I look forward to the day when a Western New York hockey player competes for the Buffalo Sabres after developing at the HARBORcenter.” “This is a historical day for our hockey program and represents another strong commitment to the growth and importance of intercollegiate athletics at Canisius College,” said Canisius College Director of Athletics Bill Maher. “The opportunity to have a world-class facility like the HARBORcenter as our home venue is outstanding and will be a critical piece for Dave Smith and his coaching staff to continue to build a championship-level program. Our goal is always to recruit and develop the best student-athletes we can at Canisius College, and we believe that playing in the HARBORcenter is another important part in realizing this goal.” Canisius, which has sponsored varsity hockey since the 1980-81 season and began competing at the Division I level during the 1998-99 campaign, has played its home games in the 1,800-seat Buffalo State Sports Arena since 1999. The Griffs compete in the Atlantic Hockey Association and won their first conference championship during the 2012-13 season with a 7-2 victory against Mercyhurst on March 23. Canisius then advanced to its first NCAA Tournament before finishing the season ranked 19th in the final USCHO.com national poll.

NY Native Bogo Bonds Seven Year Deal

The Winnipeg Jets are pleased to announce they have agreed to terms with defenceman Zach Bogosian on a new seven-year contract worth $36 million. “I’ve made it clear since my first time being in Winnipeg that it was obviously a place I wanted to be for a long time,” said Bogosian in a conference call Monday afternoon. “I’m just real happy that Winnipeg believed in me, gave me another chance to prove myself. I didn’t exactly have the best start to my career in Atlanta. Moving up to Winnipeg gave me a new chance to play in a hockey market, and play in a hockey town that I enjoyed playing in front of. That’s where the term came in, it was definitely a no-brainer.” Bogosian, 23, played in 33 games with the Winnipeg Jets last season. In that time, the right-handed blueliner recorded 14 points (5G, 9A) and 29 penalty minutes. Along with his efforts on the ice, Bogosian was also awarded the Staffmax Staffing & Recruiting Community Service Award for his commitment to the Winnipeg community and his role with the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation. The Massena, NY native has played in 297 career NHL games between Atlanta and Winnipeg for 103 career points (34G, 69A) and 237 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the first round, third overall, in the 2008 NHL Draft.
