Dear Readers, We apologize for the late issue but we wanted to give you coverage from the 2015 IIHF Women’s U18 World Championship being held here in Buffalo. It’s been a very exciting week meeting up with old friends and making new. The games have been very exciting showing the skill of women throughout the world. At press time we are coming into the finals of the tournament and will bring that to you via our website www.nyhockeyonline.com We wish all of you a Happy New Year and with that may come some changes to NY Hockey E-Magazine. We are evaluating our situation and may have to make some editorial adjustments for next season. Any input from you would be appreciated. The hits on the magazine have decreased for the last couple issues and they decrease significantly in the summer. We also need more organizations to submit their own news and/or contact us with event dates so we can visit your rink! Anyway, 2015 looks to be a great hockey year for all of us and we look forward to sharing New York Hockey news with all of you. Sincerely, Randy Schultz Publisher NY Hockey E-Magazine

he IIHF 2015 Women’s U18 World Championship came to Buffalo January 5-12. Teams from Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA took to the ice at Buffalo’s newest rink--HarborCenter. The first day opened with Team Sweden facing Team Japan. Both teams played local girl’s teams for practice so we had the opportunity to see them before the tournament. Team Sweden opned the scoring at 2:13 into the first period when Hanna Olsson scored an unassted goal. The
Around New York/ Page 5 period would end 1-0. Japan got on the scoreboard in the second period and that period ended in a 1-1 tie. In the third Sweden scored twice and Japan would put one in to end the game 3-2 in favor of Sweden. Then it was the Czech Republic against Russia. The game was dominated by Russia early on when they scored 2 in the first period and their third in the second for the 3-1 win. Russia’s goals came from Anna Shokhina, Kristina Korotkikh and Moa Wernblom. Czech’s Barbora Patockova put in their lone goal, assisted by Michaela Pejzlova. Game ended 3-1 Russia.
Finland played Sweden in Rink 2 at about the same time. The game was 0-0 tie at the end of the first. Finland scored twice in the second and the game ended 2-0 in favor of Finland. A note that former Niagara University Women’s D1 Ice Hockey Coach Margo Page serves as a mentor to Team Sweden. In the final game, and the one all of New York was waiting for, was Team USA against Team Canada. They played to a sold out crowd. Formal opening ceremonies were held at that game

Flags from each team (see photo page 7 & 8) were skated into the arena by girl players from local associations including: Natalie O’Brien, Emily Finach, Sarah Waszkielewicz, Lara Beecher, and Camryn Brownschidle of the Buffalo Bisons and Abby Ruggiero, Jersey Phillips, Jenna Cavalieri, Karli Gregoire and Alex Snow of the Buffalo Regals. The following game report is from USA Hockey: The U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team defeated Canada, 2-1, in a thrilling shootout in the first game for both teams at the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship. Grace Bizal (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins High School) scored in regulation and Kaitlin Burt (Lynn, Mass./ Boston College) made 16 saves. U.S. captain Jincy Dunne (O’Fallon, Mo./St. Louis Lady Blues 19U) and Abby Roque (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich./Sault Area High School) added shootout goals to seal the victory. “We had a tremendous crowd tonight and we fed off the energy from the fans for a great start,” said Joel Johnson, head coach for the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team. “It’s a great win to build off of and we look forward to facing Czech Republic tomorrow.” Just 5:06 into the game, one second after Team USA’s first power play, Bizal collected a pass from Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass./Assabet Valley) and beat Canada’s goaltender high on the glove side. Both teams exchanged chances and the U.S. nearly made it 2-0 when Rebecca Gilmore’s (Wayland, Mass./ Assabet Valley) slap shot from the right circle hit the crossbar with 6:41 left in the period.
Around New York / Page 6 After a scoreless second stanza, Canada evened the score with 10:59 left in the third when Sarah Potomak’s shot from the slot squeezed by Burt. The teams traded several chances the rest of the frame, but headed to a five-minute sudden death overtime tied 1-1. After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. Burt stopped both Canadian shooters, and Dunne scored on the first Team USA attempt before Roque secured the win. Jincy Dunne was named US Player of the Game and Micah Hart was Canada’s Player of the Game. On day two of the Tournament Sweden beat Switzerland 4-0; Canada over Russia 3-2; Finland skated past Japan 4-2 and the USA beat Czech 3-0. Three players scored and Brittany Bugalski (Lake Worth, Fla./Assabet Valley) made eight saves to help the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team shut out Czech Republic, 3-0. “I was really pleased with our effort and I thought we played very well tonight,” said Joel Johnson, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team. “The Czech Republic had a good game plan against us and their goalie played well.” Alex Woken (Fargo, N.D./Shattuck St. Mary’s) opened the scoring 3:34 into the game when Mekenzie Steffen’s (White Bear Township, Minn./Hill Murray) breakout pass sent Woken in on goal alone and she fired a wrist shot by Czech Republic goaltender, Katerina Zechovka. With three seconds left in the second stanza, Team USA nearly doubled its lead when Grace Bizal’s (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins High School) spin-around pass from the right circle found Patricia Marshall (Thief River Falls, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) alone in the slot for a shot that was denied by Zechovka. hile a great deal of attention has been paid to the U18 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championship being played at HarborCenter in Buffalo, as well it should be, I would like to take a moment and recognize a couple of unsung hero hockey organizations. Hats off to the Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19 girls and Buffalo Bisons U16 girl’s teams that played warm-up games with several of the teams that participated in the World Championship. The Jr. Purple Eagles played against Teams USA, Japan and Sweden while the Bisons played two against Team Japan. I was very impressed with the Bisons efforts in the two games they played against Japan. Head coach John Cleary and assistant coach Shelley Looney prepared their team very well. The fact that there was an age difference (U16 vs. U18) was one thing. But the other was that the Bisons are a team that may practice a couple of times per week and play a game or two as well per week. Japan, on the other hand, is a National Team that not only practices together several times per week, but live together for several months as well as fulfill their educational re-
quirements together. The Jr. Purple Eagles were a little more evenly matched against their opponents, which included Teams USA, Japan and Sweden (single games versus each team). While the outcomes were not what either the Jr. Purple Eagles or Bisons expected, the experience they got was priceless. “It was a great opportunity for both teams and we appreciate the opportunity to play against teams of the caliber,” commented Jr. Purple Eagles head coach, Scott Welch. “In the beginning our team was very excited to play against these teams, especially against Team USA. “As the games went on our team really began to settle down. I think our goal against Team USA was to take it one period at a time. “Either try to win the period or neutralize and tie it.” Welch also pointed out a couple of other important factors. “I think the girls found out that they could play against competition like Team USA, Team Sweden or Team Japan,” said Welch. “There were some col-

lege coaches in the stands watching these games and I think they came away impressed with our girls.” It should be noted that the Jr. Purple Eagles and Bisons did whatever was ask of them during the games. In a couple of the games the teams were asked to help set up situations. Both teams played four-on-four, shorthanded and power play situations, no matter what the score was at the time. They also were involved in shootout situations. For Olivia Zafuto, a defenseman with the Jr. Purple Eagles U19 team, it was a great experience. “I am friends with a lot of the girls that play for Team USA because we have been in a lot of National Camps together,” said Zafuto, who scored a shootout goal against Team USA. “I tried the best I could to keep up with them in our games. “I think these games showed all of us what we have to do if we want to compete at that level.” “I was amazed and didn’t believe it at first when I was asked to play,” said Grace Simmons of the Bisons. “The play was different from what I’m used to. “The Japanese move fast, they skate around and tie us up and dig in low.” They are physical and you don’t expect it.”

While the outcomes of the games may not have been what either team expected, the experience that they had was priceless. While the Jr. Purple Eagles and Bisons didn’t skate away with any medals, the memories they have will last a lifetime. Hats off to all of you for a great effort! Union Goalie #1 by Janet Schultz Janet@nyhockeyonline.com
Union Senior Goaltender Shenae Lundberg is Number 1. Not only on her sweater but in the NCAA as well. Lundberg capped off an impressive December when she was named the ECAC Goaltender of the Month. Her 59-save shutout in a 1-0 win over Northeastern on December 2 were the most in a shutout in NCAA Division I history since 2000-01, the first year the NCAA sponsored a National Champion. She is also ranked sixth nationally and second in the league with a 1.38 goals against average and fourth in the country and first in the ECAC with a .958 save percentage among goaltenders with more than one game played. The Peterborough, New Hampshire native began her career as a soccer player. Some of her teammates also played ice hockey and asked her to join them because they needed a goalie. She was 9 1/2 years old and figured if she could tend goal in soccer she could do it in hockey. One issue--skating. She had skated when she was younger so when she took to the ice, it was like starting from scratch. “We went and got the gear and found out I was allergic to something in it because I have sensitive skin,” says Lundberg. “I hadn’t even stepped on the ice yet.” “I sucked it up and got on the ice,” she says proudly. And from then this little girl fell in love with ice hockey.
East Hockey / Page 20 At 10 years old she was playing with 12 year olds and at 11 she found herself with a goalie coach, Mike Buckley, who is still with her. “They found I had some natural talent and hockey knowledge,” she continues. “I never even watched hockey on TV and the only player I knew was a cousin who lived in Canada and played.” “When I was getting good, I still wanted to learn more and wanted to keep getting stronger and better. “Now I understand it and love it even more,” said Lundberg. Being a goalie does put you in demand and being good makes that demand even stronger. Lundberg played with several boy’s select teams in New Hampshire (Hookset Avalanche) and Massachusetts and also played for Assabet, a nationally recognized girl’s ice hockey team. There she played U11 Red A for 2 years and on the U12 team and at the same time played for the North Stars Boys team in New Hampshire. She also played for the East Coast Wizards for three seasons. She still plays for the Wizards as a member of their Senior team. A former member of the Deerfield Academy Ice Hockey team, Lundberg was their starting goalie and lettered all four years. She was an Assistant Captain and named MVP in her Senior year. Lundberg was also a member of the USA U18 Select Team in 2010 and has been selected to attend USA Hockey Player’s Development Camp from 2007 to

In 2010 and 2011 she was selected to USA Hockey’s Warren Strelow Natioal Team Goaltending Camp and was nominated to play for the Make a Wish Foundation Charity Team in 2011. As a member of the U18 National Team she brought home the gold from Sweden and with Assabet she was a two-time USA Hockey National Champion at U12 and U14. “Being on the National Team is an honor,” said Lundberg. “It’s a big step because the competition is so much higher and I felt I had that because of playing with boys.” “The travel with the National Team is a great experience,” she continued. “But you are also alone without Dad to help carry your pads through the airport.” Lundberg is also realistic and knew an education and planning for her future is necessary. She was recruited by several colleges but wanted to stay close so her parents and friends could watch her play. “My parents come to all my games,” said Lundberg. “Academics does take priority,” she continued. “There’s not much after college for women in hockey so you need to focus on your education and what to do after.” “It’s important to train and work hard, practice every day and be well rounded,” she advises young and upcoming
East Hockey / Page 21 hockey players. Lundberg not only excelled in hockey she played volleyball, field hockey, soccer and excelled in Track and Field. When asked about role models for girl goalies she found herself looking at players in the NHL like Jonathan Quick. But more so she found herself looking at the collegiate goaltenders who happened to be training with her trainer, Brian Foster. “I saw how hard they worked and now they are with the AHL and/or the NHL,” Lundberg remarked. “I have respect for them.” What she has learned is that even though she started late she now understands that one of the most important things to learn are the systems and don’t just focus on the goaltending. “I wish I had started to learn how things were broken down earlier,” she continues. Lundberg is on her way to one of her ideas for the future and that is to play men’s hockey in Europe. She is also thinking of a career with in law enforcement. But right now she is focusing on getting her education and keeping the net clear of pucks for Union College.

ver half-way through the fifth season of WNY Girl’s Varsity Ice Hockey and Orchard Park/Frontier sits in first place. With that said, there is always a chance Lancaster/Iroquois (2nd), Williamsville (3rd), Monsignor Martin or Kenmore (tied at 4th) could pull out ahead. It’s one of those things that has made this league fun! Due to a lack of statistical data being turned into our Statistician, there isn’t a formal leader list for scoring or for goaltending. We’ve also had to postpone a few games, most recently three games the week of January 5 due to WNY weather. Updated dates will be posted on NY Hockey Online’s Facebook page. One young lady from Frontier/Orchard Park was named #3 Super Athlete of the Week by WKBW-TV 7. Gabby DeMeo (pictured) garnered those honors December 19. The season opened November 25 with Williamsville at Lincoln and a tied game. The following day Monsignor Martin opened with a 2-0 win over Amherst/Sweethome Katz. December’s schedule was filled with games, as many as three on a Thursday night. Frontier/Orchard Park and Kenmore each got a goal in the first period on December 2 and that is the way the game ended. No goals in the second or third period. Lancaster, with their new partner Iroquois, went scoreless in the first period against Williamsville on December 4 and scoring two in the second took the game 2-0 into the third. Williamsville then dropped in a goal with 1:41 left and ended the Dec. 4 game 2-1 in favor of Lancaster/Iroquois. The next game up at Northtowns was Kenmore against Katz and ended in a 9-0 shutout for Kenmore. Up by four going into the second, the second period remained scoreless and Kenmore dropped 5 in in the third. Over at the Hamburg Nike Arena, West Seneca, with their new partner Hamburg, tied Frontier/Orchard Park 1-1. Continuing on Williamsville beat West Seneca/Hamburg

On December 12 Williamsville beat Katz 3-1 after a 0-0 first period and each scoring one in the second. In the third Williamsville took the league and secured the win. he Niagara men’s hockey team spent an afternoon handing out teddy bears to the children at Carly’s Club at Roswell Park in downtown Buffalo. Five Purple Eagles made the trek into the city on the day before Christmas Eve to pass out the teddy bears collected during the team’s Teddy Bear Toss during the game against the RIT Tigers on Dec. 13. “It was a great experience to come to Roswell Park and visit the kids around Christmas time,” said senior forwards Sam Alfieri. “You can see how much it brightens up their day, just by talking to them. It’s not so much the gift of the bear, but when you have four or five teammates walk into the room and everyone is just chatting about what is going on, you can really see how much it means to the kids.” Alfieri was joined by juniors Dan Kolenda and Chris Paulin, as well as sophomores Patrick Conte and Vincent Muto. “It’s nice to give back with little things like that every once and awhile,” Alfieri said. “It makes you feel good. It was a great experience and I’m glad we did it.” This is the second year the Purple Eagles collected and distributed toys through a Teddy Bear toss. The first was back in December 2012.
he Niagara University vs. Holy Cross men’s hockey game in early December seemed to be just like any other NU hockey game. There was going to be a ceremonial puck drop made by the family of Senior Airman Frank Torcasio of the 914th Airlift Wing in Niagara Falls. His wife and three children thought the Lockport resident was still in Afghanistan, where he had been for seven months. But Torcasio surprised all of them when he suddenly skated onto the ice and met them at center ice. With plenty of hugs and kisses to go around, Torcasio also got a chance to hold his seven-week old baby girl, Ella, who he was meeting for the first time. It was a great Christmas moment for all.

On The Ice: Uncharacteristically the Purple Eagles were in last place in the Atlantic Conference with just three wins all season and none since before Thanksgiving. They will attempt to turn the season around with rival Canisius at Dwyer Arena Jan. 22 & 24 after tough trips to Air Force and North Dakota. Freshman forward Derian Plouffe was named Atlantic Hockey co-Rookie of the Week Dec. 14 after he scored a goal and added an assist for the Purple Eagles in their weekend against RIT.

at Oswego, who entered Niagara University Players delivered Teddy Bears to children at Roswell Park over the holidays. the contest (NU Photo) ranked #2 in the country, launched the team to a 4-1-1 first half finish and a share of fourth place in the conference. A 3-1 win in their first game of 2015 gave them a five game winning streak for the first time in at least 16 seasons. The final two wins of 2014 were consecutive 3-0 shutouts by goaltender Aaron Green—the first time since varsity hockey was established in 1973 that the team registered back-to-back zeros. Chase Nieuwendyk was tied for second nationally in power play goals with five.
BUFFALO STATE
Zach Nieminen (#15) made his first collegiate goal count with the overtime winner at Geneseo Dec. 6 to give freshman goaltender Ian Sylves (Sloan) his first collegiate victory. The team was shutout in three consecutive games for the first time in program history. The streak began Nov. 28-29 at defending national champion St. Norbert and continued Dec. 5 at Brockport. The scoreless streak in total reached 203:11 before ending on a Taylor Pryce tally in the first period at Geneseo Dec. 6. Ryan Salkeld (#15) was named SUNYAC Player of the
Week Dec. 14 after he had a hand in the first four goals of the game in a 5-3 victory over Johnson & Wales. Jason Zaleski was named Rookie of the Week for the same period after his hat trick in the same game. The Bengals were among five teams fighting for three playoff spots entering the second half of the conference schedule. Five of their final six games come on home ice, which could prove huge.

The Griffs were .500 or better at the winter break for just the third time in the last 10 years and the first time since the 2009-10 campaign. But they had just two wins since Halloween weekend. Their five ties over the period earned them some valuable conference points and put them in the upper half of the standings heading to the second half. Ralph Cuddemi (pictured) became the third Griff in the program’s Division I history to register two hat tricks in the same season, joining Chris Duggan (1998-99) and Cory Conacher (2010-11). He was named co-Player of the Week in Atlantic Hockey for his efforts. Freshman Jeff Murray tallied his first collegiate goal Dec. 6 against AIC. Freshman goalie Reilly Turner was honored with Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week honors announced Dec. 2. In a pair of games against Air Force, Turner recorded 45 saves. A 4-4 draw Dec. 6 with AIC 4-4 draw marked the first time in the program’s history that Canisius earned a point when trailing by four or more goals in a contest. Canisius has scored exactly half (22 of 44) of the team’s goals this season during the final 20 minutes of regulation. The team signed five players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period: forwards Josh Gabriel (Lancaster), Daniel LaFontaine (Lloyd Harbor) and Matt McLeod and defenders Cameron Heath and Jimmy Mazza (Kings Park) will join the program next fall. Gabriel is in his second season with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the OJHL where he has totaled 15 points on seven goals and eight assists in 18 games this season and has recorded 49 points, 21 goals and 28 assists in 55 career games with the Jr. Sabres. LaFontaine, son of NHL Hall of Famer Pat, has played in 19 games with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the OJHL this season, totaling 10 points, two goals and eight assists. In 40 career regular-season and playoff games with the team, LaFontaine has collected 27 points, seven goals and 20 assists. A team captain during the 2014-15 season, Mazza currently leads the P.A.L. Junior Islanders in scoring this season with 31 points, 10 goals and 21 assists in 34 games from the blue line.
Bradley Jones (Chaffee) was leading the NJCCA in goal scoring while freshman William Korczynski West Seneca) had the top goals against average to help the Kats to a 10-2 start.
FREDONIA
The bad news is that the Blue Devils start the second half of the SUNYAC schedule in last place. The good news is that they had games-in-hand on the teams the need to catch to earn a playoff spot. Scoring continues to be an issue with only four players with three of more goals through the first 11 games. Jeff Flagler (pictured above) was named SUNYAC Goaltender of the Week Dec. 14 after making 37 saves to help lift Fredonia to a 2-1 home win Friday over Johnson & Wales in the final game of the first semester. Freshman defenseman Jamie Young scored his first collegiate goal Dec. 2 against Elmira.

The Knights had scored three of more goals in a game just once since Thanksgiving, but were sitting comfortably in third place as the second half conference schedule gets underway. Included was a 0-0 tie with top-ten ranked Adrian, the first scoreless duel for the Knights in at least 16 years. Freshman Jason Stephanik (Monroe) netted his first collegiate goal Dec. 6 against Buffalo State.

The Tigers were among several teams on the bubble of hosting or going on the road for the first round of the postseason, but still had 32 points up for grabs on the schedule. Senior goaltender Jordan Ruby (pictured)was named the Atlantic Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Month for December, 2014. He stopped 54of-56 shots (.964 save percentage) as RIT went 1-0-1 against Niagara. A 4-1 win over Niagara on Dec. 12 was RIT’s first over the Purple Eagles at home since Feb. 8, 1997.
OTHER AREA NOTES: • Terry Shafer (Penfield) of Robert Morris stopped 35 of 37 shots in a 4-2 win over No. 20 Penn State at the Three Rivers Classic and was named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week Dec. 30.

n 2013 the New York State Amateur Hockey Association officially formed its Hall of Fame. The NYSAHA wanted to recognize the pioneers who helped develop their organization as well as those who have excelled as players as a result of their hockey programs. Over the past year and one-half, the “home” for that Hall of Fame was on their web page. There was also a line on the page that simply read, “We are looking for a permanent home for our Hall of Fame at this time.” The NYSAHA is no longer looking for a home because they have found one in Amherst, NY. Located on the second floor of The Northtown Center at Amherst, the Hall of Fame was officially dedicated as part of the NYSAHA Winter Meetings. Master of Ceremonies for the dedication was Guy R. Marlette, Deputy Supervisor and Liaison to Youth and Recreation for the Town of Amherst. He introduced Bill Hall, Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee and USA Hockey Secretary, and Joe Baudo, President of the NYSAHA and a member of the Hall of Fame committee. For Hall it is a great moment. “It was very important to us to have a physical location,” said Hall. “But it’s also going to be important to keep the virtual Hall of Fame active for those who won’t be able to physically travel to the Hall of Fame. “But this is going to be a great at-
traction for those people from New York State who come to Amherst. Any Hall of Fame should recognize those people who have made significant contributions in moving New York Hockey to a pinnacle, which it has enjoyed. “The five people who are in there reflect that” Those five Hall of Fame members include (Class of 2013) Robert D. “Bob” Allen, Paul Furman, Richard “Dick” Brinkman, (Class of 2014) Lou Vairo and Joe Mullen. Marlette was extremely pleased that Amherst was chosen as the site for the Hall. “It’s a feather in our cap,” commented Marlette. “Of all the activities that take place here, there are well over one million visitors that come through this concourse on an annual basis. “The relationship we have with youth hockey and with USA Hockey is tremendous. I think this is kind of a just reward
for all the hard work that has taken place here. “I think when the Hall of Fame Committee took a look at where a lot of youth hockey activities takes place in the State, this is a perfect location.” Baudo was glad to see this dream become a reality. “We began talking about a Hall a few years ago and then two years ago it became a reality with the first three inductees,” remarked Baudo. “We had their names on our web site but we always felt that we needed a place where people could walk by and put a face with the description. “Being a native Western New Yorker I’m proud that it is here. When Amherst said that they would be willing and would love to have us here, there was no question about it. It was automatic. “No matter what the hockey event may be, the people here at the Northtown Center at Amherst have always stepped up to the plate and delivered. “This was no different. It is a great honor and I hope hockey fans will appreciate it for years to come.”

Janosz Goaltending THE MODERN GOALTENDER coaches may still use
Bailey Lewczyk
G
oaltending has and will continue to change and evolve on an almost daily basis. Goalies and coaches are constantly coming up with new and better techniques to stop the puck more efficiently. Goalies of different sizes and strengths may play the same situation differently, resulting in a variety of goaltending “styles”. With that being said several goalies have asked me what scouts and coaches look for in a goaltender. Do they prefer a particular style? In this article I’d like to describe what I believe most coaches and scouts look for in a goalie in today’s game. Having the privilege of coaching at the professional level and scouting with USA hockey the past 9 years I feel that I have a good grasp of the qualities that coaches and goalie coaches look for in a goaltender. Granted some
the “eye test” where they simply like or dislike a goalie from a quick glance based on size; fundamentals; quickness; etc. For the most part coaches seem to like the same qualities. Obviously they all want a goalie that can “stop the puck” and is a “winner”. Mental Toughness. I listed this first because so much time is spent practicing physical skills but the mental side is still the most important part. Reading the play, anticipation, and “hockey sense” are necessary traits to be a good goaltender. Goaltenders are expected to have those skills. Having the ability to get over a goal against or bad game are paramount in order to be an “elite” goaltender. Having self- confidence is also part of being mentally tough. Athleticism. The days of “drop and block” on every shot are long gone. The butterfly is still a regularly used save selection but can no longer be considered
a style. Coaches want goalies that are athletic and can make 2nd and 3rd saves. They want goalies to stop all the pucks they should as well some of the ones that they “shouldn’t”. Flexibility, quickness, and reacting skills are all part of being an athletic goaltender. Fundamentals. Being fundamentally sound helps consistency of play. Stance, butterfly coverage; hand and stick positioning; sealing the post; rotating to the post etc. Basically all traits that help a goaltender maximize their size and net coverage. It is important to strive to be fundamentally sound without being “robotic”. At times things don’t go as planned and saves may have to be made in an unorthodox manner. Movement. Strong footwork helps a goaltender to stay square to the puck and set for the shot more often. Being square and set for the shot make 1st

www.nyhockeyonline.com saves easier and provide for better rebound control. Strong skating skills out of the crease help the goaltender to be a more proficient puck handler. Puck Tracking. This includes reacting to the puck, reflexes, and tracking the puck off of the stick blade early. Most goals go in over the goalies pads and high, therefore coaches want goalies with good hands as well as good feet. Puck tracking also includes the ability to make “desperation” saves where a goaltender has to find a way to the stop the puck if they get caught out of position. Rebound Control. Every goalie in the world gives up rebounds but coaches want goalies that limit the bad rebounds. Rebounds are unpredictable and difficult for the team to defend against. Using the proper stick and pad angle as well as trapping pucks on the body and glove cut down on unnecessary rebounds. Competitiveness. I consider competitiveness for a goaltender as simply “hating” to get scored on. Game or practice. Competitive goalies hate to lose and play well in high-pressure situations and big games. Competing hard also gets the team to play harder in front of the goaltender. Size. There’s no surprise that a coach would prefer a bigger goalie to a smaller one if they were of equal skill level. This doesn’t mean that a smaller goalie doesn’t have a chance though. Smaller goalies have to be better positioned and have excellent movement, athleticism, and puck tracking skills to make up for their lack of size. They
West Hockey / Page 46
Nick Lardo should also strive to have something that separates themself from other goalies such as being good at handling the puck or having exceptional rebound control. Keeping these areas in mind while at practice will lead to better game habits. Goalies should pick a couple of areas of their game to really focus on each practice. This will lead to more quality practice to achieve faster long term development.
