Devotion & Betrayal We can be devoted to many things: family, friends, community, God, our work, causes, and our country. But what does this actually mean? To most of us, it means commitment, loyalty, and faithfulness. Alternatively, when we are let down, lied to, or disappointed by those we feel devoted to, we often experience this as a betrayal. On a personal level, when we do something for ourselves, which may mean rejecting the traditions and values that have been instilled in us by our families and others, this may also be a betrayal. On a spiritual level, can we be devoted to our faith and also be true to ourselves in a way that goes against the laws or teachings of our traditions? Or, do we have to blindly obey our religious leaders to prove our devotion? Does deviation from doctrine and ritual mean a betrayal of our religion? On an archetypal level, one might say that this dilemma began with Abraham, whom legend and tradition has it, broke his father’s idols, left home, and paved the way for monotheism as a religious path. Additionally, one could say that Abraham betrayed his son Isaac in order to show his devotion to God. And the most famous disloyalty in Western history is, of course, Judas’ betrayal of Jesus. Are our commitments without end? Where does devotion end and betrayal begin? Must they be considered opposites? Can we be devoted to someone and also “betray” them? Can we be loving and devoted to our partners yet at the same time have other intimate relationships — romantic or otherwise? Can we be true to our own process of Individuation without some sort of necessary betrayal along the way? During the course of this program, we will explore these complex questions together.

Our 2015 Seminar will be based in the town of Killarney, County Kerry’s most vibrant town. Our week includes the option to join in two unique excursions: a journey to the Iveragh Peninsula guided by renowned Irish archaeologist Michael Gibbons, and an outing to the remote and rarely visited Beara Peninsula – led by Celtic expert Rob Vance.

Resilience, Hope, & the Gift of Adversity What is resilience? Is it something we are born with or can it be developed? Why is it that some of us are able to bounce back after a major setback, often becoming stronger, while others cannot seem to survive life’s disappointments. Some of us are able to overcome adversity, lack of success in life, and rejection in relationships yet not allow it to forever — In the Illuminated Dark: define our lives. Notwithstanding catastrophe, a devastating Selected Poems of Tuvia trauma, or the kind of personal tragedy that may scar us Ruebner forever, some of us may utilize adversity to grow, find We cannot change anything spiritual meaning, and enhance our lives. unless we accept it” Does resilience mean forgiving God, our parents, or others for our personal tragedies and pain? In the face of adversity, —C.G. Jung, Modern Man in can acceptance help us move on, change, create new visions, Search of a Soul goals, and create a more meaningful outlook on life?

A human being can bear almost everything and no one knows when and where happiness will overcome him.”

Examples abound of famous individuals overcoming adversity and setbacks in life – including artists, influential world figures, performers, athletes and authors. Well-known people like Victor Frankl, Elie Wiesel, and Nelson Mandela not only survived war, trauma, and personal tragedy, but were able to find joy in life and be inspirations for others. And of course, Carl Jung confronted his personal demons to create the Red Book and pioneer a creative approach to the psyche. Through a combination of presentations and experiential workshops, our faculty will help us understand more about our own psyches, the plasticity of our brains, and the potential we all have for change and finding hope and creativity in the face of despair. Drawing on the spiritual and the psychological, the physiological and the philosophical, it is possible to look inward for direction and move from life’s setbacks to personal transformation.
