Pilgrimage: The Soul in Search of Itself

A Program with the Monks of Glenstal Abbey

Pilgrimage, an archetype representing the search for spiritual centeredness and wholeness, compels us to separate ourselves from ordinary life and place, and to embark on a meaningful encounter with what C.G. Jung calls the “Self.” Throughout the ages, people from all walks of life and every religious tradition have embarked on pilgrimages, explorations that mirror a spiritual journey inward to reflect on our life’s meaning and purpose. Just as no two people are the same, no two pilgrimages are the same. Some necessitate a concrete and literal destination, while others consist of an inner, self-directed goal. But all pilgrimages have in common a restless human longing for depth, transcendence, and, ultimately, an authentic sense of being at home with ourselves in an ever-changing world. These are found in the soul’s search for itself. And, as such, we are all pilgrims. During this unique program, we will explore the ways of the pilgrim as we identify and examine the pilgrimages we have all made— and will make—in our lives. Throughout our time together, we will engage Jungian analysts, authors, and the monks of Glenstal Abbey in discussion and dialogue, and come to understand how the often perilous journey and difficult inner work of the pilgrim is not so much of discovery but of rediscovery, not attainment but a reinstatement of the original human condition and even, as some would have it, a way back to a world of meaning and spirit.

Sylvia Perera, MA, internationally known Jungian analyst, lives, practices, writes, and teaches in New York and Vermont. Faculty and board member of the Jung Institute of New York, she lectures and leads workshops internationally. Her publications include Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women; The Scapegoat Complex: Toward a Mythology of Shadow and Guilt; Dreams, A Portal to the Source; Celtic Queen Maeve and Addiction: An Archetypal Perspective; and The Irish Bull God: Image of Multiform and Integral Masculinity. Mark Patrick Hederman, abbot of Glenstal Abbey, is a frequent guest on Irish national television. A monk of Glenstal Abbey for 40 years and founding editor of an Irish cultural journal, he spent the early part of this century wandering in search of the Holy Spirit, allowing inspiration and coincidence to lead him. Among his many publications are Walkabout: Life as Holy Spirit and Kissing the Dark. John Hill, MA, born and raised in Ireland, received his diploma in analytical psychology from the Jung Institute of Zurich. In private practice in Zurich and a training analyst at the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zurich, he received degrees in philosophy at the University of Dublin and Catholic University. Among his publications are At Home in the World: Sounds and Symmetries of Belonging and essays on Celtic myth, dreams, and Christian mysticism. Nóirín Ní Riain, PhD, is an internationally acclaimed Irish singer and songwriter and an authority on Gregorian chant. A theologian and musicologist who has performed worldwide (including a special event honoring the Dalai Lama), she was awarded the first-ever doctorate in theology by the University of Limerick. Additionally, Nóirín is the author of books, articles, and CD’s, including Theosony: Towards a Theology of Listening and her recent autobiography, Listen with the Ear of the Heart.

Fate, Destiny, Desire: Do We Have Choice?

A Seminar

Our choices are often governed by our desires; in turn, we might say these desires inform our destiny. For good or for ill, determination and desire carry the seeds that make us who we are. Thus, it is important not only to know what we want, it is also important to choose wisely. Yet why do so many of us go through life not knowing what we want? Why do so many of us have difficulty making choices? C.G. Jung points out that desire can be “instinctual, compulsive, uninhibited, uncontrolled, greedy, irrational, sensual … or, alternatively … rational, considered, controlled, coordinated, adapted, ethical, reflective …” In life we may find ourselves indecisive or allowing others to choose for us rather than having to make our own decisions and being responsible for our own choices. At times, we choose wisely; at other times, we make poor choices—perhaps irrevocable ones that we deeply regret. Can we consciously decide wisely? Can we trust our unconscious to guide us? How do the conscious and unconscious interact? These questions and others will be explored at Harvey’s Point—located on the shores of breathtaking Lough Eske at the foot of the Bluestack Mountains in County Donegal. Here, in these beautiful surroundings, accompanied by an outstanding faculty, we will consider the gamut of human desire, its effect on how we live every day, and how it shapes our destiny.

Jung, Yeats & The Creative IMagination:

A Mythic Journey

Imagination acts as a bridge between the personal and the collective unconscious; it is something which belongs to all of us and which offers us a connection to our soul. Embedded within this process lies the call to create—a summons to the imaginal that we ignore at our peril. For Jung and Yeats, as well as the alchemists, the creative role of the imagination is founded in a dimension of the soul that Jung called the “Great Dream.” This Great Dream, Jung writes, “has always spoken through the artist as a mouthpiece.” Drawing on the imaginal and archetypal aspects of myth, fairytale, and legend as sources for their creativity, C.G. Jung and W.B. Yeats left indelible legacies in the fields of literature, psychology, art, theology, and spiritualilty among others. If imagination was for Jung and Yeats the source of their creativity, it can serve as a model for us as well. During the course of this week, guided by an outstanding faculty, we will mine the depths of our own creativity, dreams, and imagination through presentations, group discussions, and Active Imagination exercises. Additionally, accompanied by faculty and local, expert guides, we will walk the mythic, sacred landscape of Sligo and visit important sites that inspired Yeats’ poetry and life. Throughout our journey, we will hear in poetry and song the Celtic myths, stories, and folk and fairy tales that will help to spark our own creative expression.

Jung IN BetweenHeaven&Earth ISRAEL Jerusalem&the Galilee A STUDY TOUR

Supper at Mount Zion, as well as enjoy a full day’s outing to Masada and the Dead Sea.

The archetypes and myths of Jerusalem and the serenity and natural beauty of the Galilee will provide the setting for this unique study tour to Israel. Beginning in the modern city of Tel Aviv, our travels will take us to the Galilee, an area rich in beauty and with the most magnificent landscape in Israel, and Jerusalem—for centuries thought to be the “axis mundi,” or center of the world. It was in the Galillee that Jesus embarked on his ministry, performed many of his miracles, and from where he drew his Apostles. It was here where mysticism and the Kabbalah flourished for centuries. During the course of our stay, we will explore this spiritual area and experience its scenic, historical, and sacred sites—including Tiberias, Capernaum, Mount of the Beatitudes, Safad, and the Golan Heights. From the Galilee, we will move to Jerusalem— the Golden City, the Eternal City, the city of David—where ancient history mingles with modern-day life and stirs our emotions like no other place on earth. Here we will walk along the Via Dolorosa, through the exotic souk (bazaar) to the Kotel (Western Wall) and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Additionally, during the course of our stay in Jerusalem, we will visit the newly expanded Israel Museum, (ranked among the world’s leading art and archeological museums), the Shrine of the Book where the Dead Sea Scrolls are housed, the Garden Tomb, and the Room of the Last 14

Led by Jungian analysts Aryeh Maidenbaum and Ann Belford Ulanov, and joined by the local Jungian community, we will gather together for presentations, discussion, and dialogue. We will experience some of the most magnificent scenery and archaeological sites in Israel accompanied by Iddo Katz, an archaeologist and one of Israel’s leading guides; travel via deluxe, air-conditioned coach; and stay at some of the finest hotels in Israel. We invite you to join us! Program Details: Participation: Limited to 36 participants.
