Take a walk on one of Sörmlandsleden’s hiking trail loops Sörmlandsleden is a 1,000 km network of trails and paths through Sörmland’s forests and countryside. Around Nyköping, you can hike on the cliffs by the sea, through the nature reserve with its unique wildlife, and across cultural landscapes marked by traces of the past. If you prefer a simpler walk, choose one of the many loop trails. The Gälkhyttedammen – Övredammen trail is a 6.5 km loop which is classed as easy. Start at Gälkhyttedammen and walk clockwise. After 4 km, you will reach the windbreak at Övredammen on the scenic headland, where you can pause for coffee or light a fire at the campfire site. 4

The trail passes through Pilthyttan nature reserve and Övredammen. The floodgates are still there today – relics from the area’s iron industry in the late Middle Ages. The final part of the trail goes up a hill – stop and enjoy the view before you continue walking, which takes you back to where you started. A C O M P LETE LI ST AT VI S ITNYKO P I N G.S E

One of the east coast’s wildest archipelagos lies just outside Nyköping. The Stendörren nature reserve is many people’s favourite spot and, once you’ve begun exploring, you’ll long to come back again. In an archipelago with thousands of islands, it’s not difficult to find your own personal paradise. If you have your own boat, there are many natural harbours to choose from and, if you prefer kayaking, you can discover places where you can feel like you’re the first person to set foot there since the last ice age. At Stendörren, you can experience the archipelago without needing a boat. Walk across the suspension bridges to reach the islands and views of the open sea. Facilities include a visitor centre, picnic areas, hiking 8

trails, places to light fires, telephones and toilets, as well as a separate path suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Learn about the wildlife, environment and cultural history of the archipelago in Stendörren’s visitor centre. An exhibition informs curious visitors about the mysterious life beneath the surface of the water, man’s changing relationship with the Baltic Sea and the environmental challenges we face today.

A C O M P LETE LI ST AT VI S ITNYKO P I N G.S E

The exhibition is suitable for both children and adults. There is a laboratory where you can look at mussels and insects through a magnifying glass. There’s even a little cartoon mussel who leads you through the exhibition. The big question is: does it make the mussel happy or sad if you pee in the water? Combine your visit to Stendörren’s visitor centre with some time for yourself, by sunbathing on the rocks by the water or fishing far away from the coast.

Founded in 1187 Nyköping is one of Sweden’s toldest towns, situated where the water runs into the harbour. In the Middle Ages, kings Birger Jarl and Magnus Ladulås built a castle that became the foundation of what we today call Nyköpingshus. The great event of the Middle Ages in Nyköping was the banquet held here in 1317, when King Birger had his brothers Erik and Valdemar imprisoned after a power struggle that had lasted for years. Today, one of Sweden’s biggest summer dramatic 14

performances take place at the castle every summer in July, in memory of this event. When Karl IX was king in the 16th century he renovated it to one of the most luxurious castles that could be imagined at that time. The renaissance castle, was burned down in a city fire in 1665. It was later burned down again on 25 July 1719. The whole city, with bridges and harbour moored ships, was burned to the A C O M P LETE LI ST AT VI S ITNYKO P I N G.S E

Nynäs Manor House The Manor House at Nynäs takes you on a journey through time, from the 1600s to the more modern 1900s. The house has now woken from its long beauty sleep and welcomes children and adults to come and visit an almost completely preserved manor house, featuring many original items that provide an insight into the lives of the families and servants who lived here for almost four hundred years. Fine ladies and gentlemen with towering white hairstyles look down from the walls of the

The bedroom of the lady of the house is bright and light, and the bed is wrapped in flowing floral fabric to form a canopy. But look at how short the bed is! Did people sleep sitting up? CULTURE & HISTORY The archipelago town of Oxelösund is characterized by contrasts – a charming archipelago idyll juxtaposed with steelworks and an immense harbor. The town originated in Old Oxelösund, and a cultural trail describes its history, as does the Archipelago Museum. St Botvid Church with its unique architec-

ture, the new maritime museum and Stjärnholm Manor with its sculpture park are also worth visiting. Koordinaten, situated by the town square Järntorget, is the heart of Oxelösund’s cultural life and offers art galleries, concerts, tourist information and much more. www.facebook.com/ visitoxelosund www.instagram.com/ visitoxelosund
