Fight For Justice 16 Arrested In Immigration Protest More than a dozen people were taken into police custody Monday during a protest that brought traffic to a halt in Lower Manhattan. Among the 16 arrested in front of 26 Federal Plaza were clergy members, local leaders and City Council members. The act of civil disobedience aimed to put pressure on President Barack Obama and Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform this year. It was also meant to stop the Arizona law that criminalizes illegal immigrants and to propose a moratorium on deportation. Participants linked arms and walked onto Broadway and Thomas Street, temporarily interfering with the flow of afternoon traffic. Caribbean ‘Savagely Beaten’ Texan Stanford Asks To Be Freed Allen Stanford, the Texas financier charged with running a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, asked the federal judge overseeing his case to release him pending the start of his criminal trial, saying that his detention violated his constitutional rights. Stanford has also fired one of his lawyers, setting up a potential showdown with US District Judge David Hittner, who said last month he would not allow a fifth change to the defense team. In a filing on Tuesday with the federal court in Houston, lawyers for Stanford said their client had been “subjected to substantial and undeniable punishment,” including nearly a year of incarceration and both physical and psychological damage. This and the prospect of more than a year of further custody until and during his trial, which is scheduled to start in January 2011, violates his constitutional rights to due process, effective assistance of counsel, a speedy trial, and an absence of excessive bail, the lawyers said. “When Mr. Stanford surrendered to authorities, he was a healthy 59year-old man,” Stanford’s Houstonbased lawyer, Robert Bennett, wrote

in a brief on which Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz consulted. “Mr. Stanford’s pretrial incarceration has reduced him to a wreck of a man: he has suffered potentially life-impairing illnesses; he has been so savagely beaten that he has lost all feeling in the right side of his face and has lost near-field vision in his right eye,” Bennett said. Saying their client had neither the motive to flee nor the means, having been declared “indigent” by court, Stanford’s lawyers urged that he be placed under house arrest at the home of his fiancee’s sister, with an ankle bracelet and other travel restrictions. A federal appeals court has twice rejected Stanford’s attempts to be freed from jail pending trial, and

Hence the same treatment that is meted out to Commonwealth countries will also be applied to countries that are not within the Commonwealth. Recognising the importance of international cooperation in order to fight the drug trade and cross-border criminal activities, this Bill will take Guyana a step further in its international relations with other countries particularly those within the Commonwealth as it relates to criminal matters. The infamous pink suitcase bust took place at the JFK Airport in New York where a female passenger travelling from Guyana was nabbed with 24 kilograms of cocaine contained in a pink suitcase.

The investigations according to Minister Rohee revealed that persons with deep interest have been affected and a blow has been dealt to the operations. “This is very significant for us in so far as the fight against drug trafficking is concerned. It shows that the administration is serious about fighting the drug trade,” Minister Rohee added. Government’s commitment to end drug trafficking in the country require constant work to ensure that the legislative framework is on par with those of other countries in relation to various criminal activities. In December 2009, The Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill was passed in the National Assembly. This Bill provides for assistance in criminal matters between Guyana and countries that have a treaty with Guyana concerning such assistance. The Act applies with all necessary modifications to any country that has a bilateral treaty with Guyana in respect to mutual assistance in criminal matters, as well as any country that is party to the United Nations (UN) Convention Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee

Essmyer, Tritico & Rainey LLP, cited Stanford’s decision to fire him on May 14, and “irreconcilable differences” with Bennett over litigation strategy and other matters. “The nature of the irreconcilable differences is also the fact that Mr. Bennett acts independently without lead counsel’s knowledge or consent, and often in a manner that, in lead counsel’s opinion, is detrimental to the best interests of the client,” Essmyer wrote. He said he and his law firm “do not want to be held responsible for the actions of Mr. Bennett.” Essmyer declined to make additional comments. Bennett did not immediately return a call seeking comment. At a hearing on April 6, Hittner raised his voice several times as Stanford refused to directly answer questions about his legal representation. The judge nonetheless agreed to let Stanford to replace his latest two lead lawyers. “You’ve had 10 attorneys attempt to enter this case on your behalf,” Hittner said. “I will not entertain any further substitutions.” A case manager for Hittner said the judge would consider Essmyer’s request at a hearing to be scheduled.

Ingraham Wishes Thompson Well The Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham has extended get well wishes to his Barbadian counterpart David Thompson who has been forced to take a break from official duty for reasons of ill-health. Addressing the start of the 40th meeting of the Board of Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in Nassau, Bahamas on Wednesday, Ingraham asked the meeting to take note of Thompson’s absence. “I wish to record my regret that Prime Minister David Thompson, because of ill health, is unable to join us today. I had expected to introduce him to my constituency over this coming weekend affording him some needed rest and some good fishing; a plan postponed,” Ingraham said. Hundreds Demonstrate In Support Of Wanted Don Hundreds of protestors, chanting “Leave Dudus Alone”, have taken to the streets in Kingston, Jamaica in support of reputed gang leader, Christopher “Dudus” Coke, who is wanted in the United States on drugs and gun running charges. By Kathy Barrett The appearance of the protestors, mainly from the West Kingston constituency, which is represented in Parliament by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, contradict a statement issued by the police late on Wednesday that they were being held hostage in their community. Prime Minister Golding, who has been facing calls for his resignation over the extradition affair, earlier this week bowed to public pressure and said that, Coke, 41, the reputed leader of the Shower Posse, one of the most notorious criminal organizations in the western hemisphere, would be extradited. However, lawyers for Coke have since filed a motion in the courts challenging the government’s decision to have him extradited to the United States where he faces life imprisonment if found guilty of the charges. The suit filed names Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne as a defendant. The demonstrators said that Coke is responsible for maintaining law and order in Tivoil Gardens and they remain adamant that “The President” will not be taken away without a fight.

“Leave Dudus alone - he is next to God. Because of him, we have food and send we children to school,” said a woman from the area who asked not to be named. Meanwhile, the police said criminals in West Kingston have armed themselves with several high powered weapons and that they have also stockpiled petrol and placed tires on roof tops as they prepare for a possible confrontation with the security forces. The police said they have written to several lawyers on Coke’s defence team in a bid to diffuse the situation. “The police are appealing to all law abiding residents of the affected areas -mainly Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town- to call the police if they need assistance. The police are also appealing to these residents to report any acts of criminality and are assuring these citizens that they have nothing to fear from the presence of the security forces as we intend to conduct our operations in a professional manner in accordance with the law and in the interest of all concerned,” the police said in a statement. Golding to use his influence to defuse the volatile situation in Tivoli Gardens and surrounding areas. “There is great concern that the lives of law abiding residents of West Kingston are being threatened by criminals, the Prime Minister must take every possible action to ensure that this does not occur,” said Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller. “All well thinking Jamaicans are concerned that the lives of innocent women, children and men of West Kingston are threatened by the misguided actions of a lawless minority in the community.” “None of the citizens of our beloved country should be made to feel like hostages because of the activities of criminal elements. The member of parliament must do all he can to ensure that peace-loving men, women and children in West Kingston are protected from any possible violent outbreak in that area,” she added President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA), Michael Stewart said the situation is extremely unstable even as the authorities said that the necessary arrangements have been made for students from West Kingston to sit their examinations. The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has appealed for calm and restraint. In a brief statement the party said it condemns incidents calculated to create fear and panic in the country. "The rule of law and the maintenance of public order are fundamental priorities of the Bruce Golding government,” the party added.

PM Douglas Said Golding Shouldn’t Have Been Involved St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas has added his voice to the ongoing controversy in Jamaica surrounding the pending extradition of wanted man Christopher “Dudus” Coke, saying his regional colleague Bruce Golding should have allowed the law to take its course. “Let the court decision be your guide. Let the judicial system take over the matter and once the court says ‘yes he has a charge to answer’ then he should be allowed to answer that charge,” said Douglas, in commenting on the case here on Wednesday. Jamaica police said they were now in possession of an arrest warrant issued by the court to begin extradition proceedings against Coke, who is a major supporter of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). United States law enforcement authorities had requested Coke’s ex-

tradition since August last year, saying that he had been under surveillance since 1994. They said so far nine co-conspirators have given information on Coke’s alleged involvement in drug and guntrafficking. The Jamaica government had in the past defended its decision not to extradite Coke, stating that it would not act hastily and violate the extradition treaty between the two countries. But in his radio and television broadcast earlier this week, Prime Minister Golding, who asked for for-

giveness over the entire matter said he would not be stepping down as a result of the issue. He said his party had rejected his offer to resign. There had been mounting calls for the Prime Minister’s resignation following his admission in Parliament last week that he knew of attempts by the US-based law firm, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, to lobby the United States government to drop its request to extradite Coke, who faces life imprisonment if convicted on the charges. Golding acknowledged that he had “sanctioned” persons in the ruling JLP to approach the law firm “knowing that such interventions have in the past proven to be of considerable value in dealing with issues involving the governments of both countries. “I made it absolutely, unmistakably clear, however, that this was an initiative to be undertaken by the party, not by or on behalf of the Government,” Golding said. Coke’s stronghold of Tivoli Gardens in Golding’s constituency of West Kingston has been barricaded by his supporters who say they fear an invasion from the security forces. While stating that it was for the people of Jamaica to decide on Golding’s fate, Dr. Douglas said that the situation reminded him of a similar request made by the US government back in the 1990s for the extradition of convicted criminal Charles “Little Nut’ Miller. The Kittitian leader, who is in Nassau attending the annual meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank, said it was without hesitation that his government had moved to have Miller released into US custody. He pointed out that Miller, who had earlier been freed by the US after

Caribbean Police Fired 2-Days Shy Of Pension HAMILTON, Bermuda — Five Caribbean-born police officers, including Jamaicans, have taken legal action after being sacked just two days before they reached 10 years of service. The matter is listed for hearing on May 25. The officers, who say they are devastated by the decision and face hardship, claim they had been promised permanent, pensionable positions within the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) after completing a decade in the force. Instead, they received letters giving them just two months to settle their affairs and leave Bermuda. The policemen: Constables Romeo Allen, Emmerson Donald and Sergeant Courtney Williams of Jamaica; Constable Adrian George from Trinidad and Tobago and Constable Cletus Cyris from St. Lucia – say they seeking a judicial review of the decision, arguing they have been denied their “legitimate expectations”. They have named Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva; Labour and Home Affairs Minister David Burch and the Public Service Commission as respondents. A spokesman for the Commissioner of Police said he had no comment to make on the issue since it is now before the courts. Attorney Richard Horseman, who is representing the police officers, said they had been given no reason for their termination and have had no problems with performance or discipline. “We’re seeking a judicial review, we are essentially asking the court to have the BPS honor this agreement under the doctrine of legitimate expectation. A promise has been made and the officers have acted in consequence of that promise and the service should honour that promise,” he said. “They are all devastated. One of them had two children this year and he said ‘if I’d known this was coming, I never would have had them this year’. They expected five years’ employment and then they are told they have just two months left and they need to settle their affairs. “They don’t have jobs waiting for them in their home forces. It’s a real case of hardship for them. They have each devoted a significant part of their professional life to Bermuda,” Horseman said. He said that the men were brought to Bermuda just about 10 years ago when a recruitment drive took place and were initially on a two-year secondment. “In 2007, they were each told they would be offered five-year contracts which would take them past their 10 years on the force in Bermuda,” he said, adding “this was promised to them in writing that they would be made permanent and pensionable police officers.”

American Missionary Convicted In Haiti Silby Guilty Of Attempt To Kidnap Haitian Kids

The High Court has convicted an American missionary of trying to take out 33 children out of Haiti following the January 12 earthquake. But the judge immediately sentenced her to time already served in jail. Laura Silsby, 40, who was seeking to take the children to an orphanage being set up in the neighbouring Dominican Republic, headed to the Port-au-Prince airport immediately after the verdict. She had been in custody since January 29 and was originally charged with kidnapping and criminal association. But those charges were dropped for her and the nine other Americans, mostly members of the same Baptist church in Idaho, who had insisted they had only come to Haiti to help. Silsby she was convicted of arranging illegal travel under a 1980 statute restricting movement out of Haiti. Prosecutor Jean-Serge Joseph said she was convicted and sentenced to the three months and eight days she spent behind bars. The prosecution had earlier recommended a six-month sentence and faced a maximum of three years imprisonment on the charge. The 40-year-old Silsby told the court earlier she thought the children were orphans whose homes were destroyed in the earthquake. Barbados Likely Home For New Airline BRIDGETOWN, Barbados Airone Ventures Limited (AVL), a start-up airline, which three years ago sought a home in Jamaica, is likely to begin operations in Barbados later this year. AVL, which has a Barbados address, is advertising for several positions including line training captains, captains, first officers, cabin crew, human resources and facilities manager, among others. The advertisements for flight crews said candidates should have an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) license with current type rating on MD 80 aircraft. With a “launching low fares” tagline, AVL said it would be positioning as the first Caribbean low-cost carrier. Airone Holdings Limited has named the Irish –based communications firm Digicel as its marketing and sales partner. No information was immediately available about AVL’s routes but the company had previously said it would operate flights between the Caribbean and the United States. The airline had initially planned to operate two Boeing 737-300 aircraft, which it said it would lease for between US$200,000 and US$400,000 per month and gradually expand to five within two years. AVL had sought national carrier status in Jamaica and signalled its intention to set up in Barbados once its application to the Jamaican authorities was denied. The airline had argued that with its base in Jamaica, it would have generated more than 200 new skilled jobs in the first year of operation, contribute two per cent to gross domestic product and a minimum of US$65 million in taxes to the government.

United States Reiterates Commitment To Work With Caribbean On Security Issues BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The United States says it is committed to working with the Caribbean to combat threats that endanger their security and that the launch of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative on May 27 should be viewed in this regard. U.S. Department of State Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere, Arturo Valenzuela, said that President Barak Obama, had during the 2009 Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, voiced the U.S. commitment to partnership in this hemisphere. “On May 27, 2010, the United States and the nations of the Caribbean will live up to that responsibility by launching the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), an important step forward for the prosperity, security, and liberty of the region. CBSI will support a joint U.S.-Caribbean partnership that addresses the various security and safety concerns of our respective governments and citizens, “Valenzuela said in a statement.

He said that the definition of security under this new view goes beyond assistance for security forces and anti-trafficking efforts. “CBSI is a broad initiative that also puts an emphasis on citizen safety partnerships that recognize the need to invest in crime prevention approaches, including education and workforce development as alternatives to criminal enterprise. This comprehensive view also acknowledges the need to further strengthen justice sector institutions to successfully investigate and prosecute all forms of criminal activity.” The US State Department official said that Washington and the Caribbean were entering a new phase in their relationship that should not be viewed as a panacea against crime and violence, “but the beginning of a collaborative approach, one that identifies and provides appropriate and sufficient resources to institutions and communities in a common effort to support their efforts. “Over the past year, representatives from our governments have met four times to define our strategic priorities. We have similarly identified a framework for security cooperation and a broad plan of action. These are not mere political declarations but rather guiding documents that should set a clear path toward improving citizen safety over the coming years,” he added.

Marley Helps Nas Get Out Of Comfort Zone Nas and Damian Marley had one goal in mind when they announced their collaborative album two years ago — finishing it. So they stopped work on their own solo projects, and built a chart to assess the progress of their work while discussing topics like poverty, ancestry and leadership. "It just meant so much to me," Nas said of the CD. The result is "Distant Relatives," released this week. It's a socially conscious, African-themed record that was produced entirely by Damian and Stephen Marley. Nas, 36, said working on an album without his usual suspects got him out of his comfort zone. "To change it up so kind of drastically from when you talk about hiphop producers who only do hip-hop, and then go to work with D, it's like a whole new experience and I was just excited for the challenge." Marley, 31, said the process taught him "how to do production for an artist other than myself."

Nas, who's released nine of his own CDs, said he trusted Marley's vision for the project. "I'd be done with my work for the day and then come back the next day and then hear something else added and be like, 'Wow, that's perfect right there,'" he recalled. The performers hope the disc — which features Lil Wayne, Joss Stone and Somali-born rapper K'naan — will unite cultures and inform listeners of their African roots. "We're dealing with a family issue with this album ... and nobody's excluded when we say 'Distant Relatives.' We're talking about everybody — white, black, Asian, Indian, whatever you are, you're our family with this one," Nas said. "If you can accept the truth, once and for all, that can help to kind of cure you of your sickness, you know, with your racism and your corrupt

politics, and your greed. You think about people for a change, and you think of those people as your family. And it's a good time right now to talk about that," he continued. Marley and Nas, who will begin an international tour this month to support "Distant Relatives," are also interested in creating a sophomore album as a duo. Nas, who debuted in 1994 and is known as one of hip-hop's top lyricists, says he's sometimes unsure about his future in music. "When we think that we're just starting to get a name in the game, they're artists that have been around a lot longer than us who are in their 60s and 70s, who have huge tours and do great humanitarian work. I look at them and (ask), 'What will I do?'" he wondered. "I remember thinking, 'Oh man, I won't be rapping forever.' But the reality of it is ..." The designated roles of driver and engineer was Trevor’s as well as spinning the first half of each dance session while Winston the flamboyant one, closed these sessions. In the ensuing years after Trevor’s migration to the United States Winston became the chief architect of Merritone. He shaped its development by cre-

ating a distinctive style of presenting dance music while blazing a trail from Morant Bay to Kingston then onto North America, the Caribbean and Europe. In the earlier years, Merritone was a sideline to Winston. He soon realized however, that to be successful at anything you had to be fully committed, so to the chagrin of family and friends he quit his job at Metal Box and became a professional Disc Jockey. At a time in Jamaica when society frowned upon the Sound System and Disc Jockeys, Winston who loved music, worked diligently at his craft making a science out of his musical presentations. His indefatigable lifestyle which augers well for his demanding work schedule both in Jamaica and overseas, makes his peers refer to him as one the hardest working persons in the music business. Once while playing at The Hungry Whale Club in South Florida he was overwhelmed by the smoke inside the club and suffered an asthma attack. Winston just went outside, used his Nebulizer and returned to the turntable to complete his gig. This has become the norm for Winston who suffers frequent bouts of asthma but has never allowed it to prevent him from fulfilling his musical commitments. It was routine for Winston to leave Turntable Club after a late Thursday night, head straight for the airport take the first flight to Miami to play there that night, fly on Saturday morning to Atlanta play that night and be back to fulfil an obligation to play in Jamaica that Sunday night. This gruelling schedule is no ordinary feat especially without an assistant.

Viagra Linked To Hearing Loss The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, and possibly other similar medications, may prompt long-term hearing loss among users, a new study suggests. In the May 18 issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham discuss evidence supporting an association between the onset of hearing problems and Viagra. The medication is one of the so-called class of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5i), which also includes Cialis and Levitra. The finding follows the 2007 decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to adjust labeling for such medications to more prominently display warnings about hearing loss risks. The move stemmed from reports that year regarding sudden hearing loss among users of these drugs. “It appears from these findings that the current government warning regarding hearing loss and the use of PDE-5i medications is warranted,” study author Gerald McGwin, a professor of epidemiology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public

Health, said in a news release. “Though there are limitations to this study, it is prudent that patients using these medications be warned about the signs and symptoms of hearing impairment and be encouraged to seek immediate medical attention to potentially forestall permanent damage.” The finding stems from an analysis of survey data concerning more than 11,500 men over the age of 40 that had been collected by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality between 2003 and 2006. McGwin and his team found that men who said they used PDE-5i drugs had twice the risk for developing hearing loss as those who did not. The authors stressed that more research is needed, while suggesting that one possible explanation could lie in the original purpose of these medications. They note that although now used mainly for erectile dysfunction, this class of drugs was initially prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary high blood pressure. “PDE-5i medications work in erectile dysfunction patients by their ability to increase blood flow to certain tissues in the body,” said McGwin. “It has been hypothesized that they may have a similar effect on similar tissues in the ear, where an increase of blood flow could potentially cause damage leading to hearing loss.”

Difficult Conception Tied To Higher Pregnancy Risks High-risk pregnancies are more likely in women who have difficulty getting pregnant, with or without help from hi-tech fertility treatments, new research finds. The risks should be considered during pregnancy care of “subfertile” women and when analyzing the potential hazards of fertility-assisting technologies, Australian researchers conclude in a report published in the journal Fertility and Sterility. Earlier studies had shown that women who conceived using in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments had a higher risk of complications during pregnancy. What was less clear, note Alice Jaques, of the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, and colleagues from other institutions in Australia, was whether the complications were linked to the technology used or to the mother’s underlying health issues. They analyzed the pregnancies of 2171 subfertile women who sought fertility treatments between 1991 and 2001 but went on to become pregnant and give birth without using “assisted reproductive technologies.” Their pregnancies were compared to a randomly selected group of 4363 women who gave birth from the general population. Compared to the control group, subfertile women were more likely to have pregnancy complications. For example, about 8 percent of these women had high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia — a potentially dangerous condition, marked by high blood pressure and protein in the urine, that develops in the second or third trimester — compared to about 5 percent of those in the general population. About 35 percent of the subfertile women required cesarean sections, compared to 23 percent in the general population. Other increased risks included

premature birth and low birth weight. While rare - 1.3 percent in the subfertile group, compared with 0.7 percent in the general population infant mortality was also more common. After taking into account other

risk factors for premature delivery, including previous abortions, previous pregnancies and live births, and whether the patient gave birth in a public or private hospital, the authors concluded that “subfertility in itself somehow is associated strongly” with very premature birth. The study results, Jaques and her colleagues note, identify the problem but don’t explain why risks during the pregnancies of subfertile women are higher.

According to a report published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, subfertile women were more likely to have pregnancy complications.

How Can I Keep My Son From Falling Behind This Summer? Q. My son almost failed 4th grade this year. We got him extra tutoring and with the help of his dedicated teacher, he was able to make it through the rest of this school year. I am concerned that he will lose the new skills he has gained over the summer. How can I keep him from falling behind over the summer and prepare him for the next grade? A. Good question! It is so important to keep academic skills solid over the summer. Many children experience what’s called the ‘summer slump.’ When they return in September, it appears that they’ve never seen the tasks before. Keeping kids sharp academically, while they still enjoy the summer, is key to academic success. Kids are most vulnerable to lose the skills they learned in the last few months of school as there was less time to practice. Keeping the previous skills in tact and learning some new things for the next grade, do not have to be expensive. Most bookstores, including Borders, have paperback books for various subjects and for various grade levels. Some have one big book for each grade. I would recommend focusing on reading, math and writing skills. Science and social studies are important subjects too, but if your child is behind in reading skills, he/she will have difficulty reading about science and social studies. It’s very important to remember that it’s more beneficial to work on academics everyday for short periods than once a week for long periods of time. For your son’s age and grade, I think 2 hours per day is adequate. If he is way behind, he can practice 2 hours in the morning and then enjoy some free time and then an additional hour in the late afternoon to polish his skills. Get a 4th grade book for the first few weeks of summer and then introduce

the 5th grade skills for the rest of the summer or combine them. You will be re-teaching, teaching, and pre-teaching. Here are some ideas you can use to assist you this summer: 1. Visit your local library and get your son a card so he can take out books to read. This can be a shared time to read together. 2. Take advantage of the programs your library may offer for the summer. 3. Look for local churches that have small camps that provide academic support. 4. Do some simple science projects with your son that he can help with. 5. Visit local parks, the zoo, aquariums and museums as this builds much needed vocabulary skills. 6. Take him grocery shopping with you and buy some new foods you’ve never had before and let him help you find recipes and help you cook. This again builds vocabulary and organization skills. He can also benefit from measuring and weighing as math skills. 7. Let him help you plant a garden in the backyard or in pots in an apartment window. 8. Bolt Clocks World-Leading Time Campbell-Brown Loses Daegu

Sprint wonder Usain Bolt opened his international 100 metres campaign impressively when he dismissed the field at the Colorful Daegu Pre-Championships Meeting to win in a world-leading time on Wednesday. The Jamaican clocked 9.86 seconds to finish ahead of compatriot Michael Frater who was second in 10.15 seconds, with Mike Rodgers of the United States in third. Bolt, the double Olympic and World record holder, emerged from a slow start but was never seriously challenged as he crossed the line in the 17th sub-10 clocking of his career. “That race was really wonderful,” the 23-year-old told local media. “I really loved it, and I’m looking forward to next year because it was full of energy.” Bolt’s time shaved 0.08 seconds off American Tyson Gay’s 2009 meet record of 9.94 and easily eclipsed the previous world-leading time this year of 9.95 seconds set by American Ivory Williams.

Though the outcome was virtually assured barring some ill-fated occurrence, the field still managed to stay with the big Jamaican over the first 30 metres until he kicked into overdrive and sprinted away handsomely. Frater, the 2005 World silver medallist, had enough at the end to narrowly beat Rogers while the other Jamaican in the race Mario Forsythe finished sixth. There was little joy for the Caribbean in the women’s 100 metres as American Carmelita Jeter turned back a strong late finish by Jamaican sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown to win in 11 seconds flat. The fastest woman in the world this year, the 30-year-old Jeter found a great start and executed brilliantly over the last 30 metres to win convincingly. third in 23.30. In the men’s 200 metres, Jamaican Marvin Anderson was nipped on the line as American Ryan Bailey took the event in 20.58 seconds. Antigua and Barbuda’s Brendan Christian ran a fast 100 metres but Bailey exited the turn in front to lead the field. Anderson drew level in the dying stages but Bailey leaned late to hold on to top honours. Anderson finished second in 20.59 with American Monzavous Edwards third in 20.73 and Christian a disappointing sixth in 21.29. Grenada’s Randy Lewis put in a strong performance to win the men’s triple jump, beating Korean Deokhyeon Kim (16.87), with Bahamian Leevan Sands fifth with a jump of 16.35 seconds. Jamaican Kenia Sinclair, the world leader in the 800 metres this year, held on to win the event in two minutes, 00.51 seconds. The 24year-old ran out of stream late in the encounter but had enough to hold off Olympic champion Kenyan Pamela Jelimo who clocked 2:01.52 to be second. There was no such luck in the 400 metres for Jamaican Jermaine Gonzales who finished third in 45.52 seconds behind winner American Angelo Taylor who was timed at 45.21. In the men’s 110m hurdles, Barbadian World champion Ryan Brathwaite was never in contention as American David Oliver posted 13.11 seconds to upset Cuba superstar Dayron Robles who finished second in 13.26 in his first outdoor run this year. The reigning Olympic champion and World record holder, Robles seemed to be in control at the half-way stage but Oliver came hard at the end to win handsomely. Jamaican Dwight Thomas was third in 13.40 while Brathwaite’s tame performance left him fifth in 13.67.

Mclaren’s Five Star Performance Downs Windies By Paul Mitchell

A career-best spell from Ryan McLaren bowled South Africa to a 13-run victory in the first of two Twenty20 Internationals against West Indies on Wednesday. McLaren captured five wickets for 19 runs from 3.5 overs to earn the Man-of-the-Match award, as West Indies, chasing 137 for victory from their 20 overs, were dismissed for 123 with one ball to spare at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. The 27-year-old McLaren finished with the second-best figures in a T20I behind Pakistan’s Umar Gul, who collected five for six from three overs against New Zealand last year at The Oval in London in the T20 World Cup. “It’s a good way to start off the tour having practised indoors and not outdoors for the last few weeks,” said McLaren. “But it’s only the first day, and there’s plenty more cricket to come, so hopefully, I can better this performance. “We all know the nature of T20 cricket the bowler is always up against it. You can take five wickets one day, and the next day, take a thumping, but I enjoyed it. “It was not an easy day for the batters, and you had to graft pretty hard. “Playing shots was not easy, and there was a strong wind, so there were a lot of things you had to take into consideration. “It was obviously nice to start with a win. This was the most important thing for us. We have worked really hard over the last few days here in Antigua, had a few discussions, the energy has been good around the team, and a lot of new faces have come in.

“We want to have a good tour of the Caribbean, so success in this match was very important to getting us off on the right foot.” Earlier veteran South African batsman Jacques Kallis had struck one four and three sixes in 53 from 45 balls, as South Africa laboured to 136 for seven from their 20 overs, after deciding to bat on an uneven pitch. He added 73 for the second wicket with South Africa captain Graeme Smith, whose 37 from 31 balls included three fours and one six. When Roelof van der Merwe had Ramnaresh Sarwan caught at cover off the leading edge in the 11th over, West Indies still needed 85 from 56 balls, and there was little or no substance nor stability from the rest of the batting. “It was a disappointing start for us,” said Gayle. “We wanted to put our dismal performance in the T20 World Cup behind us, but this was not the best way to do it, and was not the best start to the series. “We still have a match on Thursday, so we have to pick ourselves up. This is no time for pointing fingers. “We have a lot of corrections to make out there, and we have to return to the drawing board to try and get the best out of the players.”

Recipes Jer al Grilled R ed Snapper Jerkked Orient Oriental Red INGREDIENTS: 4 scallions, diced 3 garlic cloves, diced 2 tablespoons Jerk Rub Zest of 2 lemons 2 red snappers (about 2 lbas each) gutted with heads left on ¼ cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons olive oil

METHOD: Prepare a fire in the grill, and be sure to grease the grid itself. Mix the scallions, half the garlic, 1 tablespoon of the Jerk Rub, and the lemon zest in a bowl. Spread half of this mixture inside each of the snappers. Mix together the remaining garlic and 1 tablespoon Jerk Rub, as well as the lemon juice, soy sauce, and olive oil as a baste for the fish. When the coals are white hot, place the fish on the grill. Baste several times during cooking. Grill the fish until just done, 8 to 10 minutes a side. Serve hot with rice.
