A New Voice For Brooklyn Jamaican Medical Doctor To Replace Embattled Councilman

By Aubrey Campbell BROOKLYN, NY —There is an individual, a career medical doctor waiting in the wings to be the new voice, vision and hope for the more than 130,000 residents of the 45th Councilmanic District (CD) of Brooklyn, NY. Dexter A. McKenzie, MD, President of Provident Clinical Society/Brooklyn, wants to do more than he is already doing for the borough of Brooklyn, regarded as the Caribbean capital of the USA. With an unbridled commitment not only to the further empowerment of the Caribbean American community but all residents of his district, the goodly doctor is hoping that his house calls from now through September 15, 2009, will translate into enough votes, enabling him to trade in his lab coat and stethoscope for a seat at City Hall. Literally days away from what is shaping up to be one of the hottest ever contested primaries anywhere in the history of New York City politics, ‘Dr. Mac’s’ dream is looking more and more like a reality, not withstanding the fact that the incumbent is in a race for his political life as well. As many as six candidates survived a hostile, contentious petitioning process to be on the ballot for the Democratic Primary. It was left to the courts to decide who stays and who goes, raising serious questions and raising legitimate concerns about the validity of the democratic process. Dr. Dexter McKenzie hopes to be the lone ranger standing when the

dust settles and the sun sets over the vast expanse of the 45th CD on Primary Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Sharon Gomez has been tracking the Jamaican born, Brooklyn resident since he declared his candidacy nearly 24 months ago and thinks that, “Dr. McKenzie is well prepared and fully capable of representing our collective interests as a member of the New York City Council.” Growing up in a large family and surviving the mean streets and public school playgrounds of Brooklyn, Dr. McKenzie continues to give back to society in many ways and especially through his medical practice. He is the Health Committee

chair for the Brooklyn branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), and is the first Caribbean American to head the century old medical society in Brooklyn, NY. Speaking with the candidate, you get an urgent sense of commitment to prosperity and opportunity and the strong belief in a participatory democracy where civil society plays a centrally fundamental role in policy development and implementation. His master plan for community empowerment will be built on the principles of a unified and strong community, healthy families, functioning schools, livable wages and fairness and justice for all, regard-

less. “Others are campaigning on the issues but I am campaigning on values because in large part, it is the absence of values that give rise to issues,” the doctor, husband and father of two boys, opines. On September 15, 2009, residents of Brooklyn’s 45th Council District will get another opportunity to continue the forward march, giving yet another ‘ordinary’ individual the platform from which to do extraordinary things. After all, “the change we need cannot be postponed until the next time, we need it now, at this time and in this place,” says Dr. McKenzie, the new voice in waiting.

Prime Minister Saddened By School Girl Tragedy

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Hon. Bruce Golding

Jamaica Government Gets Poor Credit Rating KINGSTON, Jamaica -- The Government of Jamaica’s credit has been reduced by the Standard and Poor (S&P) to CCC-. This represents a reduction from B- in the last quarter. The fiscal deficit raced to $35 billion during the first quarter of this year, up from the $8 billion recorded during the same period of last year. The $63 billion in revenues collected during the first quarter of this year was eight per cent below last year’s level before adjustments for inflation. The S&P did warn the country that it was heading in the wrong direction economically and that steps are necessary to be taken to bring the budgeted expenditures in line with revenues. The reduction in the credit rating may also be linked with the discussions between members of the Jamaican Diaspora led by a Central Florida physician, Dr. Christopher Walker, who have been in discussions with IMF officials about the role of unauthorized Ponzi schemes in the Commonwealth Caribbean and specifically the negative impact on the Jamaican economy. The perception of the Diaspora is that the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) came to power using US$12 million dollars from the OLINT Ponzi scheme. These monies are now the subject of a Federal investigation into money laundering. The Diaspora identified Minister of Government Daryl Vaz as being one of the main financial intermediaries between the JLP and the OLINT Ponzi scheme and Basil Waite as being the intermediary between the Peoples National Party (PNP) and OLINT. The Diaspora called upon all the political parties in Jamaica which received money from the OLINT Ponzi scheme to return the said funds and to have this distributed equitably. What is vitally necessary is for the current Jamaican Government to rain control over expenditures, especially public sector wages which are being concealed using clever accounting techniques. In addition, the Government must divest themselves of programs and agencies which continue to be a financial drain on the coffers, one of the main ones being Air Jamaica

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas says he is saddened at the “senseless” murder of a 14year-old school girl over the weekend and has demanded full implementation of the anti-gang plan and policy that has been outlined several months ago. Police said that Stancia Lake was at a friend’s home on Saturday when someone fired a single shot through a back window hitting her in the head. “We continue to make an appeal to the general public to everyone who may have information on this crime to contact the Criminal Investigation Department,” said police Press and Public Relations Officer Cromwell Henry. Douglas, speaking at a public meeting of his ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) on Sunday, said that crime and violence must not be allowed to derail the progress being made to enhance the quality of life of the people of the twinisland federation. He told supporters that he was demanding that the law enforcement authorities fully implement the anti- gang plan and policy and the mobilization of the intelligence and operation arms of the anti-gang unit. “This senseless crime and violence must come to an end. I sympathize with the family of this young girl and the families of all those persons who have lost their lives. “This peaceful country must not be taken hostage by a few people, who believe that they can take people’s lives at random at their will and fancy. It must not continue here in St. Kitts and Nevis. It cannot continue and tonight we grieve with all the families.” “Douglas said the Ministry of National Security would continue to provide the necessary “strong and responsible leadership in the fight against crime and violence in St. Kitts and Nevis. “We shall continue to provide adequate support and leadership to the law enforcement officers, the security forces generally, especially those who are engaged in the prevention and detection of crime. We shall continue to provide adequate training opportunities overseas and in-service so that our police officers can improve and modernise their professional skills in fighting crime here in St. Kitts and Nevis,” he added. The Prime Minister, who is seeking a fourth consecutive term in office in the upcoming general elections, said that his administration would ensure that the necessary equipment, tools and vehicles are available to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force. In a statement directed at the security forces, Prime Minister Douglas said the citizenry is demanding more professional service. “Our people are demanding much more speedier and effi-

Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas cient responses whenever they are in the stress and they call for police help in their home or where ever they are. We demand appropriate response by the police to calls from persons in our communities who are facing criminal activities or who are facing criminal activities. “We demand continued foot patrols and mobile patrols in the hot-spot areas frequented by criminals and gangs where gun violence and drug related violence take place,” said Douglas. But he urged citizens to unite and help the law enforcement agencies in the fight against criminal activities. “I ask for support not only from our fellow citizens but from the non-governmental organisations, our communitybased organizations, from the church, from those specific groups in our communities that have mobilization over the last few months in watching with our young people so that they can improve their own basic training...”he added. So far this year 18 people have been murdered here.

NY Caribbean Chamber Prepares To Celebrate 24 Years Of Service To Small Business Community NEW YORK, NY -- The Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) has announced plans to celebrate 24 Years of Service to the Small Business Community with an Official 24th Anniversary Membership Business Networking Reception on Thursday, August 27, 2009, 5:30 p.m. at The Historic Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY. “As we prepare to celebrate this major milestone, we seize this opportunity to thank CACCI members, supporters and well-wishers who have helped to sustain CACCI over the years, and enabled us to survive and thrive despite many challenges. We also wish to thank our board of directors, elected officials, business partners, public and private sector agencies, and the wider community, who have helped us to reach this milestone,” said Dr. Roy A. Hastick, Sr., CACCI President/CEO. Over the years, CACCI has developed expertise in providing business assistance to

small business owners in areas of business planning, preparing for accessing financing, certification preparation, business expansion, and doing business in the Caribbean. CACCI’s extensive track record of service delivery, established partnerships with government and private sectors have enabled the organization to survive and thrive for 24 years. CACCI has also hosted Caribbean trade delegations in New York, and conducted trade missions to the Caribbean focusing on trade and investment, health, mental health and disaster relief. The Chamber recently launched a Financial Literacy Initiative targeted to youth, seniors, faith-based groups, small business owners and conducted Small Business Workshops on such issues as Credit Worthiness, Cash Flow, Insurance, Budgeting, Real Estate Mortgages, Homeownership and Asset Protection. CACCI has made considerable progress in developing the first ever Caribbean Trade

Center in New York, a 28,000 sq. ft building located in a major commercial corridor adjacent to one of New York City’s historic educational institutions, Erasmus High School, in East Flatbush Brooklyn. Upon completion, this landmark building will serve as CACCI’s headquarters, house major anchor tenants, offer fee-for-service domestic and international business services, and create jobs. CACCI is also responsible for managing and operating the Flatbush Caton Market (FCM), a 9,000 sq. ft. micro-enterprise incubator, an indoor shopping mall in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn with over 40 vendors who sell a variety of African, American and Caribbean artifacts. Recently, as a result of the modernization of the FCM by the City of New York, the signage on the Market was selected from hundreds of submissions reviewed each year by City of New York, and was awarded its highest honor for excellence in design, which exemplify the highest design standards.

Country Faces Worst Drought In A Decade Jamaicans Urged To Conserve Water

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Jamaican authorities Tuesday outlined new measures to deal with a worsening drought situation on the island and appealed to the public to conserve on their use of water. The National Meteorological Service said that less-than-normal rainfall was expected for the months of July through to September and that the dry weather was being influenced by the weather phenomenon, El Niño. The National Water Commission (NWC) has said that some of its reservoirs were being affected by the dry weather and has introduced rationing programme to meet the demands of consumers. The Office of Disaster and Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has warned that “as dry conditions worsen across the island” it was “strongly urging all Jamaicans to conserve on their use of water”. It quoted the Meteorological Service as

indicating that the worst affected parishes so far are Westmoreland and St. Mary and that the “public is being reminded to pay attention to efforts focused on water conservation and look for ways to use less and reuse whenever possible”. It listed a number of measures to be followed in order to reduce the effects of the drought including the discontinuation of hoses to wash cars, driveways and sidewalks as well as urging people to “limit your shower”. But the ODPEM said that the dry conditions could also result in the escalation of bush fires and has reminded the public not to “start fires to clear land” as well as lighting a fire “in an open area when it is windy”. “If you absolutely must burn, construct a firebreak by clearing an area around the proposed area to be burnt,” the ODPEM added. Meanwhile, the government is expected to announce measures to help farmers deal with the drought situation. Acting Executive Director of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), Janet Lawrence, warned that local food crops could be placed at risk by the dry, hot weather

which has been predicted to persist until September. She said that that vegetables and root crops, such as sweet peppers, hot peppers, sweet potatoes, cocoas and yams, could be affected during the dry periods, leading to decreased yield. She also said the dry conditions might lead to an outbreak of crop diseases as the drought persists. “Maybe you might have some beet armyworms springing back up in the St Elizabeth area,” Lawrence said. She added that while RADA has not recorded a wide outbreak of the pests across the parish since July, the dry conditions could, in fact, lead to fast reproduction of the worms. The National Meteorological Service said Monday that less-than-normal rainfall was expected for the months of July through to September and that the dry weather was being influenced by the weather phenomenon, El Niño, the term used to describe the phenomenon where waters in the tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean become warm. It occurs every three to eight years.

Anthony Makes Case For CCJ PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad Former St. Lucia Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony Monday urged Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to make the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) their final court of appeal. “I am a committed regionalist and without a doubt I have nothing but the greatest respect for the court,” Anthony said soon after the court had ruled in favour of the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat in a matter brought by the Trinidadbased regional cement manufacturer, Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL). Anthony, who played a leading role in the formation of the CCJ, when he served as Prime Minister of St. Lucia, said that it was “unfortunate” that Caribbean countries had still not adopted the necessary measures to make the CCJ their final court. “It is unfortunate that this message is not getting out there,” he said welcoming the decision by Belize and Dominica to move away from the Privy Council. The CCJ established in 2001, has both an original and appellate jurisdiction. But while most of the CARICOM countries are members of the original jurisdiction that functions as an international tribunal hearing disputes arising from the interpretation and application of the Revised Treaty under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), only Barbados and Guyana have signed on to the appellate jurisdiction. Anthony described the historic sitting of the CCJ in hearing the Trinidad case in its original jurisdiction “as a new journey for us.” “I think Caribbean people can do with confidence building,” he said, adding “today the Court has confirmed how important it is for the Caribbean,” he said.

Guns, Ammo Found In Ceiling Of Police Station Creates ...

Stir In Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Trinidad and Tobago police were on Monday continuing their investigations into the discovery of a cache of guns and ammunition in the ceiling of a police station along the eastwest corridor over the weekend. Deputy Police Commissioner Gilbert Reyes has warned that any officer implicated in the find would be dealt with swiftly. “We cannot have that in the Police Service,” Reyes told the local newspaper. Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert confirmed that “firearms, drugs and ammunition” had been found in the ceiling of the St. Joseph Police Station over the weekend, adding “we are trying to determine how they reached here”. The arms, ammunition and drugs were discovered in the ceiling of the office of a senior police officer following a search conducted by members of the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU). Media reports on Monday said that the CIU also recovered a quantity of cocaine and marijuana in a locker room in the building, which had not been logged at the station. Reyes said that all 15 police officers at the station have been transferred with immediate effect. The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce has called on the police to rid the service of rogue elements as investigations continue. “The people of Trinidad and Tobago deserve and demand a Police Service which is committed to ridding the country of crime and corruption. The Chamber thus reiterates its call for zero tolerance against crime wherever it may be, and most specifically when it occurs within the Police Service,” the private sector organisation said in a statement. It said Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert “must act decisively to weed out all corrupt practices in the Police Service if he wants to build public confidence and trust in his officers”. Media reports on Tuesday said that at least 40 police officers ranging in rank from inspector to constable will take up duties at various police stations along the east-west corridor after being transferred from the St Joseph Police Station where the guns and ammunition were found. “It is imperative that offending officers are brought to justice post haste and penalised to the full extent of the law with maximum accountability and transparency to the public,” the Chamber said, adding that the discovery of the “guns, ammunition and drugs found hidden in the ceiling of the St Joseph Police Station is cause for serious alarm and concern among members of the public.”

Immigrants Urged Not To Overstay Their Time Abroad

Jamaica’s Minister of National Security, Senator the Hon. Dwight Nelson, has said that the Jamaican Diaspora can help to deter Jamaican citizens residing abroad from overstaying their time, through the establishment of an education program. He was responding to a question posed by one of the participants at a workshop on Crime and Violence, under the topic: ‘Management of Deportees’, put on as part of the activities of the ongoing inaugural Future Leaders Jamaican Diaspora Conference, today (August 7), at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI), Mona Visitors’ Lodge. The Minister said that the average Jamaican who goes to the United States (US), Great Britain or Canada, and overstays, does not do so out of ignorance, but rather as a deliberate act. “I don’t think there is any need to educate a Jamaican that if you get a one-week visa, you must come back in one-week - they know that, and when they go, they deliberately stay there,” he said. Senator Nelson noted, however, that where the ignorance lies is what will happen to them when they have committed the offence. “This is where we need to inculcate in their minds, through some kind of mechanism, that if you go to the United States (for instance) and you overstay, they are going to look at you like a common criminal, and they are going to treat you like a common criminal,” he emphasised “What we have to do, and here is where I think the Diaspora can assist, is to create an education programme, to let them know the horrors of being caught in that situation. Let them know what will happen to them; let them know how they will be treated; and let them know how they will be abused,” the Security Minister stressed. He pointed out that offenders might listen more keenly to a member of the Diaspora, rather than a Jamaican, as that person would know the systems of the country they reside in, and would know what the repercussions would be. “They will believe you,” he said. Chief Technical Director in the National Security Ministry, Dianne McIntosh, also suggested that the Diaspora help youngsters from Jamaica, who are living overseas. “You know, they get lost in the community, and they really need to be seen as a special group. You can reach out to them, especially the young men - your 15,16,17 year olds who are out there, because a lot of things start from that age,” she said. The six-day Conference, which ends today, is being held under the theme: ‘Connecting Diaspora Future Leaders: Solidifying our Places in our Homelands and Jamaica’. It is a collaborative effort of the Jamaican Diaspora Future Leaders, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Youth, Sports and Culture, the Jamaican Diaspora Institute, Mona School of Business and the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.

American Realtors Recognize Outstanding Jamaicans The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) presented special awards to Jamaica National Building Society General Manager Earl Jarrett and VGC Holdings’ Managing Director Ruthlyn Villiers recently. The association of African-American real estate brokers gave its NAREB Leadership Award to Jarrett, and the NAREB Youth Development Award to Villiers. The organization was holding its 62nd annual convention at the Ritz Carlton Golf & Spa Resort Hotel in Montego Bay on July 31. “Earl Jarrett’s dynamic and synergistic leadership of Jamaica National Building Society has guided its expansion to become the Caribbean ’s largest building society,” stated NAREB President, Dr. Maria Kong. She pointed particularly to the overseas expansion of the organization under his stewardship. Jarrett thanked NAREB for the award and commended the organization for its commitment to home ownership. Against the background of the real estate sector fallout, he said it was necessary to create innovative solutions, “to ensure that people remain in their homes.” Jarrett applauded NAREB for its Youth Leadership and Mentorship program, which encouraged young people to learn

wealth creation skills. He said it was important that the youth get financial training so they learn how budget and invest. In presenting the award to Ruthlyn Villiers, NAREB President Kong said her name would be one that would attract attention, “When the history of construction in Jamaica is written.” Villiers had been a pioneer in Jamaica ’s construction industry, becoming the first woman to own a construction company, Dr. Kong said. The VGC Holdings Managing Director introduced other women into the construction field, and was instrumental in the formation of the Women’s Construction Collective which provided basic training in construction skills for women from lower income communities, Dr. Kong stated. “You should look at what is your real purpose in life,” Villiers said in explaining the philosophy which had motivated her. She advised listeners to ask themselves, “What do I do to help my fellow man and to make life easier and better for others?” At the special awards presentation, NAREB also gave its Harold Dawson Youth Mentorship Award to its past President Winston Johnson. The Maryland businessman has been a real estate broker for the past three decades. The five-day Convention, running July 28 to August 2, attracted 540 registered American realtors, in addition to their family members.

Jetblue Sells Month Of Unlimited Flights To Caribbean For $599 By Mary Jane Credeur ATLANTA, Georgia — JetBlue Airways Corp., working to keep planes full after the peak US summer travel season ends, has offered a $599 travel pass that lets passengers take unlimited flights for a month. The program covers all 56 JetBlue cities, including those in the Caribbean, and runs from Sept. 8 to Oct. 8 with no blackout dates, the New York-based carrier said Wednesday in a statement. JetBlue’s network includes the US and leisure destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean. “We’ve never done anything like this before, and we think it’ll be well received,” said Bryan Baldwin, a spokesman. The offer ends on Aug. 21, or earlier at the carrier’s discretion, and passes must be purchased over the phone, he said. JetBlue’s promotion is a seasonal variation of the AAirpass sold by AMR Corp.’s American Airlines,

the world’s second- biggest carrier. The AAirpass provides 25,000 miles of travel to be flown within a year for $11,250, said Tim Smith, a spokesman for the Fort Worth, Texas-based airline. US leisure travel typically declines after the Labor Day holiday in September, and the largest domestic airlines plan to respond to this year’s dropoff by trimming flights and jobs. JetBlue’s traffic, as measured in miles flown by paying passengers, fell 4.6 percent through July as the

recession caused businesses to curb travel spending. Over the same period, the airline’s planes flew 1.4 percentage points less full than a year earlier. Tickets on the All-You-Can-Jet pass must be booked at least three days in advance of each flight, and there is a $100 penalty if the trip is later canceled, JetBlue said. American’s AAirpass doesn’t have blackout dates and doesn’t require advance booking as long as there are seats available on the flight, according to Smith, the spokesman.

All-You-Can-Jet pass includes Caribbean destinations.

Police Investigate Death Threat Against PM PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, -- The investigation into a claim made by Prime Minister Patrick Manning that death threats were made against him is ongoing, a senior police officer has confirmed. Deputy Commission of Police Raymond Craig, who has been assigned the responsibility of leading the investigation, told reporters Wednesday that the probe is underway. However, he declined to divulge any details. “That investigation is ongoing. However, at this time I will not be revealing anything more on that,” he said. Manning made the claim at a public rally of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) on July 27. He said that last year, says before the twin-island republic marked the anniversary of the failed 1990 coup, a person delivered a message to the office of his wife, Hazel Manning, who is also the Local Government Minister, and said there was a group plotting to assassinate

the Prime Minister. “What has not been said before is that two days before that someone walked into the office of the Minister of Local Government and told her that a certain organisation in this country was about to make an attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister. “That is what the Prime Minister knew that morning,” Manning said, as he reminded the meeting, which was carried live on television here, of the incident involving a police officer and his security detail. “One year ago, on the morning of Saturday July 26, when the Minister of Local Government and myself were on the way to our gym at 3.30 in the morning, a marked police vehicle sought to peel off the final vehicle in our (security) detail. We had one unmarked car in which we were travelling and there were two jeeps behind us, so everybody knew it was the Prime Minister’s detail.”

REGIONAL

BRIEFS Former TTur ur ks & Caicos urks Premier Loses London Appeal LONDON, England — Former Turks and Caicos Islands premier Michael Misick has lost his appeal against the earlier rejection by the High Court in London of his bid to challenge a decision by the British government to suspend the territory’s constitution. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced plans to restore direct rule after a Commission of Inquiry headed by Sir Robin Auld found evidence of widespread corruption in the government. Misick stepped down shortly after the report was made public. However, Misick filed proceedings in the High Court in London arguing that the proposed suspension of the constitution contravened European Union law. Arguments submitted by Misick’s English lawyer, Edward Fitzgerald QC, further contended that Misick, having been duly elected by the voters of the Turks and Caicos Former Premier of the Turks & Islands, should not be removed by the Caicos Islands, Michael Misick executive using the powers under the West Indies Act. However, the two judges who heard the application in May found that there was no realistic prospect of Misick’s case succeeding. They also pointed to the gravity of the allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement levelled against Misick and other elected members of parliament. Further details of the appeal court’s ruling will be published as soon as they are available. In a statement on Wednesday, TCI Governor Gordon Wetherell welcomed the decision in the Court of Appeal to dismiss the appeal in the legal challenge brought by Misick. “It remains the intention of the UK Government to bring the Order into force as soon as possible, taking into account the current situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” he said. “I am consulting the UK Government and will make a fuller statement shortly.”

Bruckup,Shaggy Drop Sizzling New Single Bruckup, the eternal high-energy reggae artist who fans love to call “Mr. Excitement” drops a new single and video on the reggae market soon. The blazing single and its accompanying sizzling video clip is called “Sunglasses - Keep Your Shades On” and features reggae icon Shaggy, whose 2000 MCA Records album “Hot Shot” sold more than 10 million units worldwide and featured Billboard Hot 100 chart hits “Angel” and “It Wasn’t Me.” “Sunglasses - Keep Your Shades On” is typical of Bruckup’s hybrid style and the release is an exotic blend of reggae, soca and hip-hop. It is a song that compels the listener to tap his or her feet and dance. Anybody who has ever met Bruckup can’t help but be awed by his infectious energy and the laughter that he brings, so it comes as no surprise that the record is already being embraced by reggae radio. Dave Rodney, media marketing consultant and executive producer of the 151 Reggae Internet Show/ Axiomonline.tv added, “Bruckup is

a rare synergy of a reggae artist, dancer and comedian wrapped in one package, and the power of what he brings to the stage was on display the last time he was a guest on the 151 Show when he mesmerized the studio and the viewing audience, leaving fans begging for more.” “I am very proud of this new single”, Bruckup commented. “I am also thrilled that I had the opportunity to work on this project with Shaggy, who has enjoyed international success with ‘Boombastic,’ ‘Midnite Lover’ and ‘Lucky Day.’ I feel the song will be a force to be reckoned with on the dance floors and for many music lovers, it will bring back the fun in music,” he continued. The video is an astonishing piece of artistry that incorporates elements of the classic movie “Revenge of The Nerds” with Bruckup’s unique contemporary twist. The video was shot at various locations around New York City including at 50 Cents old office. It features Bruckup and Shaggy and was produced by Reset Creative, a New York City production company, and directed by German videographer Zollo of Fat King Films. The clip was styled by two leading urban fashion companies- Tommy Hilfiger

Bruckup is no stranger to big times and bright lights as he’s had past performance and production collaborations with some of the music industry’s big guns - Teddy Riley, Swiss Beatz, Dougie Fresh, Slick Rick and Wyclef Jean. “Bruckup has been a powerful force in the reggae arena for a long time, and we feel this first single from his 2010 upcoming album, to be called “Mr. Excitement” will be a turning point in his career”, Gazoo,

Bruckup’s manager pointed out. The video clip is being serviced to all major TV and new media outlets including MTV, VH1 and BET. And while music insiders are buzzing about “Sunglasses - Keep Your Shades On” the tireless Bruckup is being kept busy finishing up his album and taking acting classes to better equip himself for upcoming film and TV projects. “I put no limits on how far I can go”, Bruckup chimed confidently. “Sunglasses - Keep Your Shades On” was produced by Sound Boy and will be released on the New York-based Orchard label.

Powerful New Voice Tells Of Disappearing Voices In Black Radio

No, it’s not your imagination. Black radio really is vanishing. The new film “Disappearing Voices – The Decline of Black Radio” explains why. Directed by independent filmmaker U-Savior Washington, written by Iyanna Jones and narrated by veteran radio personality Wayne Gillman, this documentary is an historical overview of a uniquely American media format that rose in the late 1940s and 50s, reached its peak in the 1960s and 70s, and has gradually spiraled downward ever since. At the time of filming, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that out of 10,315 commercial AM and FM radio stations in the United States, only 168 were Black-owned – and even that number is declining. As the documentary explains, radio took on tremendous importance in the Black community because it spoke directly to its audience through Black radio “jocks” such as Frankie “Hollywood” Crocker, Hal Jackson, Eddie O’Jay, Jocko Henderson, Jack “The Rapper” Gibson, Gerry Bledsoe and “The Mad Lad” E. Rodney Jones. Each developed their own distinctive style and sound in their on-air – and sometimes on-top-of-the-record – “raps.” These forerunners of hip-hop could set the tone and mood for their listeners’ whole day or evening and they became as important as the music they played. During its glory days, Black radio advertised directly to local communities and featured local Black-owned businesses. When a hot new artist was available at the local record store, a local promoter would book that artist to headline at a local venue. What’s more, as Ron Daniels, who worked

on Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign, and Rev. Al Sharpton point out, political and social activists could mobilize thousands of people by simply putting the word out over the radio about a protest or rally. It truly was radio by Black people, for Black people. In the late 1960s a shift occurred when Madison Avenue advertising executives realized just how much influence Black radio had over its audience. White-owned stations featuring Black disc jockeys feared these charismatic jocks were becoming bigger than the station itself and would be in a position to demand more money. In the 1970s Madison Avenue responded. The “urban contemporary” music format came into being, co-opted Black soul music and phased out Black radio to reflect a colorless society. Enter larger advertising dollars from huge corporations selling products like cigarettes, Coca Cola and beer. Exit music deemed too Black, like the style and lyrics of Percy Sledge, James Brown and Isaac Hayes. Moreover, with huge corporations like Clear Channel dominating the markets, there was scant room for community concerns on the airwaves. As we search up and down the dial today, sadly, we hear Black-owned radio stations changing from one format to another as they scramble to find a profitable niche. However, as “Disappearing Voices” makes clear, the problem isn’t format or a lack of listeners, of which there have always been plenty. The problem is the collaboration between Arbitron, a radio research firm that drastically undercounts Black listenership, and Madison Avenue, which insists that if their clients advertise on Black stations at all, they do so at discounted rates far below what they pay to advertise on “white” stations.

Following on the announcement that his breakout video for the single Lucky Man from the recently released album MADE IN JAMAICA, was selected as a Featured Video on the popular social networking site, MYSPACE which boasts more than 70 million hits per month, Courtney John made his way to New York for a listening party and whirlwind tour. Besides MYSPACE, the video has been picked up by other trendy tastemaker sites including Island Soul Mix, FADER/SUITE 930, BOOMSHOTS, VUZE HD NETWORK, Higher Level Sound and Dancehall Mobi and is being aired internationally on Trace TV which is seen in more than 160 countries around the world. This is all great news for the Jamaican artist who has set his sights on the international mainstream market. On his New York visit, Courtney John held a listening party at the 310 Lounge in Manhattan where media and industry representatives learnt more about the singer, songwriter and producer. Shortly thereafter, he was off to a Brooklyn for a launch party, however, not before stopping by for a performance at the annual Jamaica Independence Ball and an appearance on Sunday at the inaugural Digicel Caribbean Cup New York games. While in New York, Courtney John had numerous radio and television interviews, culminating with a special guest appearance on The Global Jam Session with DJ Hard Hittin Harry. Courtney John made his presence felt as he introduced his Made in Jamaica album in tandem with celebrations of Jamaica’s 47th anniversary of independence. Courtney John plans to return to New York in the fall to perform.

REGGAE ROCKS THE RITZ! Beres, Tarrus Riley Deliver Phenomenal Performances At Jamaica’s 47th Birthday Celebration In New Jersey

NEW YORK, NY — Over a thousand patrons at world famous Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth, NY were skanking to the rhythms of Reggae music this past Sunday, as Reggae icons Beres Hammond and Culture, and Roots Reggae phenomenon Tarrus Riley rocked the Ritz to its very core in celebration of Jamaica’s 47th year of Independence. With a power-packed line-up that also included legendary saxophonist Dean Fraser, talented singer/ songwriter Duane Stephenson, and former Digicel Rising Star siren Lenya Wilks, the year’s staging of Reggae at the Ritz was a rousing kick-off to Jamaica’s independence and emancipation celebrations in the Tri-State area. “For this year’s Reggae at the Ritz show, we purposely chose Independence weekend,” states popular New Jersey promoter Kasey “G City” Rankine, of RoadBlockRadio.com, who produced this year’s event with Icon World Entertainment. “Reggae at the Ritz is all about showcasing the best of our culture-the best artists and entertainers that the Caribbean has to offer on the world-renowned Ritz Theatre stage. Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley, Culture, Duane Stephenson, Dean Fraser and all of the artists that

performed this year did a fantastic job of showcasing Jamaica’s best.” Duane Stephenson, most popularly known for co-writing the internationally acclaimed hit “True Reflections” for Reggae artist Jah Cure, set the tone for the evening with a flawless performance that included his singles “Ghetto Pain,” “Dream Weaver,” and his popular hit tune “From August Town.” The evening then belonged to Tarrus Riley, who gave a powerful, soul-stirring performance that left the audience in a trance. From signature hits like “Beware” “Lion Paw” and “She’s Royal” to his latest single, a masterful remake of the Michael Jackson classic “Human Nature” from his soon to be released album Contagious, Riley proved that despite his relatively young age and young career, he has the type of classical talent that can hold its own next to iconic acts like Hammond and Culture. Culture, led by Kenyatta Hill, gave an extraordinary performance, drawing from their 30+ year catalogue of Reggae staples like “Stop Fussing and Fighting” “Zion Gate” and “See Dem A Come.” Hill gave a lively and energetic performance, channeling memories his father, the late Reggae icon and Culture lead

singer Joseph Hill. “What a boy can sound like his father,” exclaimed New Jersey resident Iris Peet. “That voice will live on.” Lenya Wilks, who came in third in Jamaica’s Digicel Rising Star competition in 2007, also performed flawlessly, paving a grand entrance for beloved Lover’s Rock singer Beres Hammond. With a slew of lover’s anthems dating back to the late 1970’s, Hammond had the entire audience singing along to song after song, delivering a masterfully memorable set. “Tempted to Touch,” “Rockaway,” “I Feel Good,” “What One Dance Can Do,” “Can You Play Some More,” are just a handful of classic and contemporary Reggae favorites that Hammond effortlessly belted out that had the audience reeling. “Beres is Beres—he’s just classic,” stated one concert goer who goes by the name Biggs. “You can never go wrong with a Beres concert. It’s always worth it, every penny.” “Reggae at the Ritz was a great way to celebrate Jamaica’s 47th anniversary-these amazing performers really bring home the cultural impact of Jamaican music,” states Frank of Icon World Entertainment.

IAAF Gets Jamaican Star Athletes Reinstated! BERLIN, Germany – A dramatic intervention by the IAAF has forced Jamaica’s track and field officials to reverse a decision to axe Olympic champions Shelly-Ann Fraser and Melaine Walker and star sprinter Asafa Powell from their World Championship team. The Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) had expelled the three athletes and other MVP Track Club team-mates from the team for failure to attend a training camp, but reversed the decision at the request of the IAAF. Early Wednesday, the JAAA had sent a letter to the IAAF President Lamine Diack, requesting that the athletes be dropped after they failed to attend a “mandatory” national training camp in Nuremberg this week. The IAAF admitted late Wednesday that they – as the world governing body — put pressure on the Jamaican federation to change its mind because the exclusion of the prominent athletes would reflect badly on the championship. “We asked Jamaica to reconsider in the interest of sport,” IAAF general secretary Pierre Weiss said.

Howard Aris, the president of the JAAA, confirmed that they agreed to comply with the world governing body’s request. “They asked us to put aside domestic interests for the greater good of the sport, so we have agreed to withdraw the letter sent into Lamine Diack,” Aris told reporters. Conflicts have been ongoing between the JAAA and the MVP Track Club, headed by Stephen Francis, and a similar situation had surfaced last year when MVP athletes had also missed a pre-Olympic training camp. The lifting of the ban clears the way for key athletes Fraser, Walker and Powell to compete at the 12th IAAF World Championship, starting Saturday. Fraser brilliantly won the women’s 100 metres at the Beijing Olympics last summer and Walker copped the 400-metre hurdles gold in an Olympic record 52.64 seconds to contribute to an awesome all-time best Olympic showing by Jamaicans, who tallied six gold, three silver and two bronze in the Birds Nest. Powell, a disappointment at major championships in an other-

With a season’s best 9.88 seconds, only his Jamaican team-mate Usain Bolt (9.79) and American Tyson Gay (9.77) have been quicker this year. The other MVP athletes involved in the training camp controversy are former World Championship sprint hurdles medallist Brigitte Foster-Hylton, Shericka Williams, a 400-metre silver medallist in Beijing last year, and 400-metre runner Kaliese Spencer. Although being cleared to compete in Berlin, the six athletes could still face disciplinary action following the championships.

Ecuador, Jamaica Draw In Friendly At Giants Stadium Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz played to a 0-0 tie with Ecuador in their international friendly last night at the Giants Stadium in New York. In the first game of the doubleheader Venezuela beat Colombia 2-1. A estimated crowd of 23,523 watched as Jamaica’s Dwayne Miller made seven saves as both teams battled in an evenly contested and entertaining game. Ecuador’s Carlos Tenorio and Joao Rojas both had goals disallowed because the goals were called offside. Although Ecuador had the better chances, the new look Reggae Boyz team were very competitive, matching their opponents and pressing Ecuador’s Jose Francisco Cevallos to stop seven shots.
