Why Bloomberg Didn't Put His Hand On Bible A few hours before the inauguration on Friday, the mayor's aides distributed an exhaustive description of the Bible that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg would use to take the oath of office. It belongs to his mother, Charlotte. It was printed in 1909 by the Canal Street Hebrew Publishing Company in Manhattan. Its translator? Isaac Leeser. With so much attention paid to the book's origin, it was a wonder that nobody reminded the mayor to place his hand on it as he was sworn in. As Mr. Bloomberg recited the oath of office, he held his right hand in the air, and dropped his left hand to his side. The Bloomberg family Bible, held by his two daughters, Emma and Georgina, hovered, conspicuously handless. At the end of the oath, as if recognizing the error, the mayor briefly made contact with the volume, like a baseball player coming back to touch home plate. Did it still count if his left hand wandered? Technically, yes. Stu Loeser, a spokesman for the mayor, said that neither a Bible nor a hand placed upon it is required to be successfully sworn in. "An atheist could be mayor," Mr. Loeser said.

Harlem Political Pioneer Sutton Laid To Rest NEW YORK, NY - Percy Sutton, the pioneering civil rights attorney who represented Malcolm X before launching successful careers as a political power broker and media mogul, was laid to rest on Wednesday in New York City. Thousands of mourners filled Riverside Church on Wednesday for the funeral of the 89-year-old, son of a former slave, who died on December 26th. Percy Sutton became a fixture on 125th Street in Harlem after moving to New York City following his service with the famed Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. His Harlem law office, founded in 1953, represented Malcolm X and the slain activist’s family for decades. The consummate politician, Sutton served in the New York State Assembly before taking over as Manhattan borough president in 1966, becoming the highest-ranking black elected official in the state. Sutton also mounted unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. Senate and mayor of New York, and served as political mentor for the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s two presidential races.Jackson recalled Sutton talking about electing a black president as early as 1972. Sutton was influential in getting his 1984 campaign going, he said.

Leatrice Sutton, widow of Percy Sutton, listens to remembrances of her husband during his funeral in New York, Wednesday.

“His life-long dedication to the fight for civil rights and his career as an entrepreneur and public servant made the rise of countless young African-Americans possible.” President Barack Obama

“He never stopped building bridges and laying the groundwork,” Jackson said Sunday. “We are very glad to be the beneficiaries of his work.”In a statement released Saturday night, Gov. David Paterson called Sutton a mentor and “one of New York’s and this nation’s most influential African-American leaders.” “Percy was fiercely loyal, compassionate and a truly kind soul,” Paterson said. “He will be missed but

his legacy lives on through the next generations of African-Americans he inspired to pursue and fulfill their own dreams and ambitions.” President Barack Obama called Sutton “a true hero” to AfricanAmericans across the country. His life-long dedication to the fight for civil rights and his career as an entrepreneur and public servant made the rise of countless young AfricanAmericans possible,” Obama said in a statement. In 1971, with his brother Oliver, Sutton purchased WLIB-AM, making it the first black-owned radio station in New York City. His Inner City Broadcasting Corp. eventually picked up WBLS-FM, which reigned for years as New York’s top-rated radio

station, before buying stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit and San Antonio between 1978-85. The Texas purchase marked a homecoming for the suave and sophisticated Sutton, born in San Antonio on Nov. 24, 1920, the youngest of 15 children.Among Sutton’s other endeavors was his purchase and renovation of the famed Apollo Theater when the Harlem landmark’s demise appeared imminent. “The Apollo and its staff stand on the shoulders of Mr. Sutton as the theater continues to flourish,” said Jonelle Procope, president and CEO of Apollo Theater Foundation Inc. “(He) will be greatly missed and will always be an integral part of the Apollo legacy.”

Attallah Shabazz, left, eldest daughter of Malcolm X, is consoled by Hazel Dukes, president of the New York chapter of the NAACP.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, and former New York Mayor David Dinkins attend the funeral of Percy Sutton.

Bloomberg To Fight Crime In Bermuda

HAMILTON, Bermuda – The Bermuda government says it has accepted an offer from New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, to help investigate five murders on the island. “Government has accepted the offer from the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, of assistance of officers from the NYC Police Department Gang Unit,” said the Minister of Public Safety, David Burch. “He (Mayor Bloomberg) rang the Premier, as a resident of Bermuda and someone who has a keen interest in the safety of Bermuda. “He is a friend and said, ‘We probably can help. Get your Commissioner to talk to the head of our Gang Unit’. They talked before Christmas,” Birch told reporters. The NYC officers will assist investigations into the recent murders rather than on-the-beat policing, because of the differences between Bermuda and US law enforcement. Five men — including four in the last month — have been gunned down since last May. The latest shooting was on Sunday night when 34year-old Perry Puckerin was shot dead in the bar of the Hamilton Parish Workman’s Club. No arrests have been made in any of the murders that the police have described as gang related.

Farrakhan Says ‘Someone Is Benefitting From The Violence’ Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan has posted a YouTube video of himself giving an address "to the gangs and people of Bermuda". Minister Farrakhan visited the island as part of a speaking tour in July. He warned that if Bermuda "was not careful" it would witness the kind of crime epidemic experienced in Jamaica and elsewhere in the Caribbean. In his video address, recorded on December 20, he claims he knew the violence in Bermuda would result in death. He says: "When we visited Bermuda several months ago, we came because we saw a surge of escalating violence between our young men and we knew that that violence would not stop, that it would escalate and that escalation would produce death. I am grieved to hear that what I said would happen now has happened. "Someone is benefitting from the violence. Someone is facilitating this violence and the young men of Parkside and 42nd and other areas in Bermuda are pawns in a game that is being played." Minister Farrakhan says he is "grieved" to learn of the death of Kumi Harford, Garry 'Fingas' Cann and Shane Minors. He had met some of these young men while in Bermuda. He says: "My hope was that this could be avoided. Bermuda is a part of something that is going on worldwide among our young people. Somebody is benefitting from the violence. "I heard that intelligence was given to Government that a shipment of guns came on to the island about three weeks ago. Somebody let them in - it wasn't Parkside, it

In a direct message to the members of Bermuda's gangs, he says: "Even a cockroach when the lights are turned on will strive to stay alive. You are much more intelligent than a cockroach. "If you want to live, violence is not the way. Guns and drugs are not the way. Workers and officials sift through debris surrounding the fuselage of American Airlines flight AA331 which crash landed overnight on a flight from Miami to Jamaica, just beyond the runway of Norman Manley International Airport, in Kingston Jamaica, Dec. 23, 2009. More than 40 people were injured, at least 4 seriously, and there were no fatalities, according to officials, after the plane overshot the runway in Jamaica when it landed in heavy rain.

Airline Crew Insisted On Landing On Wet Runway WASHINGTON – An American Airlines crew that crashed at a Jamaican airport last month chose a more difficult approach for landing and then overshot its runway, investigators said Wednesday. In its first update into the Dec. 22 crash, the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority said air traffic controllers suggested that Flight 331's pilots maneuver the plane into a headwind to land, which would have slowed its speed. But the crew members "repeated their request" to land on the rain-slicked runway from the north, where a stiff tailwind boosted their speed. The landing was made more challenging because the pilots overshot the runway's touchdown zone – where a plane's wheels are supposed to contact the ground – limiting the distance they had to stop. The plane bounced upon landing, which further decreased its stopping distance. The Boeing 737-800, which took off from Miami, overran the runway at Kingston-Norman Manley International Airport and broke through a fence before coming to rest on a rocky beach. The jet nearly struck a series of concrete posts that could have resulted in deaths, investigators said. There were no fatalities among the 148 passengers and six crew members, but the jet was cracked open in two places. Investigators didn't release a probable cause of the crash Wednesday. They did say that the plane's braking system worked normally, while the flightdata recorder indicated "the rate of deceleration appears normal for a wet runway," the investigators said in a factual finding report. "If the braking was normal, and the airplane did not stop, it could be that it did not have enough runway remaining to stop," said Lt. Col. Oscar Derby, director general of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority.

Investigators aren't ready to say why the pilots overshot their landing threshold, which is typically the first one-third of a runway. The pilots of Flight 331 first touched down at 4,100 feet into the 8,910foot runway. They used an advanced navigational aid known as a heads-up display, which should have guided them to the appropriate point to land, according to the report. Had the pilots decided it was too dangerous to land in Kingston, their plane had enough fuel to fly to the alternate destination of Grand Cayman, the report said. A spokesman for American Airlines declined to comment on the report Wednesday. The pilots told Jamaican investigators that the aircraft "did not decelerate normally, and they subsequently applied maximum manual (pedal) breaking." However, the plane's computer showed that its auto-braking system "decelerated normally," the report said. Some passengers reported sensing the jet hydroplane, which happens when the plane's wheels spin over a sheet of water instead of making contact with the runway. Hydroplaning can impair a plane's braking system. Investigators began a test of the asphalt runway Wednesday evening, Derby said. The test will show how slick it becomes in rainy conditions. Flight 331 was traveling about 170 mph, the recommended airspeed for landing the Boeing 737800, as it approached the runway, investigators said. A tailwind of about 16 mph increased its speed, however. The tailwind landing limit for the Boeing 737-800 is about 17 mph. The jet was still traveling about 72 mph when it left the runway and crashed through the airport's perimeter fence, crossed a road and came to a stop on the beach, about 40 feet from the water.

Police Probes Death Of Youngster Allegedly Shot By Lawmen PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert said an investigation had been launched into allegations that a 23-year-old man had been shot and killed by the police on Sunday, sparking off a violent demonstration in the volatile Laventille area, east of the capital. ’We invite (eyewitnesses) to come give statements supporting what they saw,’ Philbert said on a radio programme after angry residents blocked the streets and demanded justice over the death of Triston Cobbler. But Philbert reminded his audience that a number of police officers were ’lying on hospital beds, who are recuperating in institutions, who have been paralysed …when they have to interact with people who are armed’. Philbert said the police officers were responding to calls that two men were seen in the area with guns and “and our police officers are trained to defend themselves, to defend the community and they will do that”. The police said they called on the men to stop, but they started running and shooting at them. But the residents claim that Cobbler was killed by the police as he and another friend, Darren Alexander, were returning from a party. Parliamentary representative for Laventille West, NiLeung Hypolite, told reporters he would arrange for a lawyer to represent the interest of the family he knew personally. “… this particular young man was not involved in any particular mysterious acts. This guy is a young fella who loved playing basketball. I do not know what transpired but this is not the way to start the New Year,’ Hypolite said. The killing coincided with the release of a report by the Switzerland-based Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies through its “Small Arms Survey” that claimed eastern Port of Spain is “among the most dangerous places on the planet”. In the 53-page report entitled “No Other Life-Gangs, Guns and Governance in Trinidad and Tobago”, the author, Dorn Townsend, said that the gun problem in Trinidad and Tobago would not go away. It said that steps by the government to bolster law enforcement and curb smuggling “are hobbled by a worsening of civic attitudes, i.e citizens are downright cynical about the ability of the State to reverse the mayhem caused by guns and gangs.”

Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo says his Facebook profile was an impersonation.

Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham

Bahamas PM Issues Stern Warning To Criminals Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham has sent out a stern warning to criminals as he outlined new strategies to deal with the escalating criminal activities in the country.

Addressing the ceremony to mark the installation of a new Commissioner for the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Monday, Ingraham told criminals “it is a lazy, unmanly and, yes, an unpatriotic copout to use your family or social conditions or personal failings as an excuse for criminal violence….”. Ingraham warned citizens that the country should not be seen as “anyone’s parent” and that “if you choose to act irresponsibly, the State will treat you with the response you deserve. “This applies to those with criminal intent, those who abuse children, spouses, partners and our elders, as well as those who use violence to

settle conflicts, including within our schools.” The Prime Minister said that even as his administration steadfastly confronts the big issues with regard to crime and its causes, “we will also increasingly address other mindsets and behaviour of which criminal ideas and enterprise often take advantage, and in which they feel at home”. Ingraham said every citizen has a moral obligation and a civic duty to ensure that “we are not adding to a culture of lawlessness in which the violent criminal is encouraged. “It is justice that is supposed to be blind and steadfast, not the citizens of a country turning a blind eye, winking and nodding at criminal behaviour. Most seriously, this applies to those who by omission or commission or clever evasion aid and abet serious criminals.” The Prime Minister said that violent is having a drastic effect on the entire country and the government would respond with every means necessary “through economic empowerment and social policy, through micro-initiatives such as character education and community service, and through proven alternative sentencing and restorative justice programmes”. But he said that all of these efforts combined may not be sufficient in dealing with those who terrorise society “with their blatant disregard for life and property, creating a cli-

Millions Missing From Police Safe GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Three policemen are assisting their colleagues in probing the disappearance of G$3.4 million (US$17,000) from a safe at the Police Headquarters in Eve Leary, in the capital. “There were no signs of any breakage to the Office,” the police said in a statement, adding “the monies were in a locked canister that was secured in a locked cashier cage”. The statement said that the three police officers, who have not identified, “were responsible for the monies and the keys,” the police said. This is the second time in less than a year that monies have disappeared from secured safes at the police compound. Police are still investigating the disappearance of an undisclosed sum of money at the same location.

mate of fear and anxiety”. He said the government is taking urgent action to reform the criminal justice system. “In particular we are responding to the increase in crime following decisions of the courts as to the maximum time an accused may spend on remand before being granted bail. A criminal out on bail committing new and often vicious crimes is unacceptable to law-abiding citizens. It frustrates the police. It mocks the criminal justice system and our way of life.” Ingraham said that the government “will facilitate increasing as quickly as possible the number of judges, magistrates, courtrooms, legal officers and support staff to surmount a lengthy backload of cases. “Further, this calendar year will see the introduction of electronic bracelets and monitoring of serious offenders on bail. In fairly short order my government will announce expanded measures to confront the number of armed and dangerous offenders on bail. “To those criminals who believe that the courts’ decision was a get-outof-jail card and a license to continue their nefarious careers I say: you are sadly mistaken,” Ingraham said, noting that in addition to reforming the justice system, the government will also be increasing the strength of the police force.

Fakebook? Guyana Prez. Says Profile Not Legit GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The Office of the President says it has discovered another fake profile on the social networking website Facebook, attempting to impersonate President Bharrat Jagdeo. “The impersonator is apparently using the profile to defraud supporters of the website by offering them land and other concessions”, according to a statement issued by Office of the President. “The Office of the President would like to highlight that President Jagdeo is not nor has never been a member of Facebook or any other social networking site. The public is therefore being asked to ignore this impersonation,” it added. The statement said that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) “has since been notified about this latest impersonation”. The bogus profile, which has since been taken down, included two photo albums: one of the Berbice bridge in Guyana and one of international leaders, some with Jagdeo. The government statement complained that someone had also impersonated Jagdeo on the networking site in July. Facebook said that under the network’s terms of use members are banned from attempting to “impersonate any person or entity”.

Spain Gives $35M For JA Green House

Kenyan police are seen in Nairobi in 2009. Kenya has tried and failed to deport a Jamaican Muslim cleric who is on an international terror watchlist and served four years in a British jail for inciting racial hatred, police said Wednesday.

Kenya Deports Radical Jamaican Muslim Cleric NAIROBI – Kenya finally deported to Gambia a Jamaican Muslim cleric who is on a global terror watchlist and served four years in a British jail for inciting racial hatred, a minister said Thursday. Kenya police had tried to deport Abdullah al-Faisal, 45, to neighbouring Tanzania but Dar es Salaam rejected the move and the controversial imam was sent back to Nairobi international airport on Wednesday. "We had problems deporting him because many countries, including the US, declined to have him even on transit. But he finally chose a country where he wanted to go," Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang told reporters. "He chose Gambia and we have deported him there this morning... In fact the information we have is that he has already landed there and Gambia has received him," Otieno added. Faisal was arrested last week shortly after attending prayers at a mosque in the coastal city of Mombasa. Police and immigration officials said at the time they arrested the imam for violating immigration regulations by preaching. Faisal was arrested in Britain in 2003 after spending years urging his audiences to kill Jews, Hindus and Westerners.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Spain is providing Jamaica with J$35 million (US$392,877) to fund the construction of two greenhouses to promote protected agriculture, and to train extension officers and farmers from across the Caribbean region. The money will go to the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Technology in Agriculture (CEATA), which was launched last March. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Dr. Christopher Tufton and Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva Fernandez, signed the agreement on Wednesday with Tufton indicating that the assistance would benefit not just Jamaica, but the region as a whole. “We intend to use those facilities (greenhouses) to expose the critical operatives - the extension officers and the farmers - to the protected agriculture technology, to promote best practices, to explore a variety of crops and by so doing, allow protected agriculture to be a part of the main stream, as opposed to the periphery of the agricultural thrust.” He said that the training component was critical and that “part of these funds will be used towards developing and executing a range of training modules in keeping with the challenges that we face and the outcomes that we would like to achieve”. Ambassador Silva said that the project “apart from the fact that it is meant for research and ultimately to increase and improve productivity of the agricultural sector in Jamaica and the region as a whole, it is also going to benefit individual farmers, who will have an opportunity to be trained in the Centre of Excellence”. The Ambassador said his government would make available approximately $35 million in its phase of funding, and that over a period of two years, it is anticipated that a total of J$180 million (US$2 million) would be expended on the project. “This is something that will depend on the performance and the feedback. The idea is to work together, so we are expecting that

already the staff of CEATA is working together with Spanish experts to set up the technical site. We are also expecting some Spanish institutions to come over in the next month to start the training programme,” he said. The Centre will serve as a co-ordinating agency to address research and training in the agricultural sector. It comprises a large body of stakeholder groups representing international agencies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA), and local institutions that are involved in the promotion and capacity building of agriculture, such as the Scientific Research Council (SCR), the University of the West Indies, and Northern Caribbean University.

“Everything was ok in the head. His left hand is broken in six different places and his right wrist is broken. Of course, he was beaten up all over his body.” Eloise Gonsalves

Vincie PM’s Son Crashes Bike Into Passenger Van BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves on Thursday reported that his teenaged son was “resting comfortably” and "out of immediate medical danger" after he had to be rushed to Barbados for treatment following a serious vehicular accident.

St. Vincent Prime Minister said he is grateful for the support of the St. Vincent and Barbados medical team.

Storm Gonsalves, 17, sustained several injuries about his body and suffered internal bleeding after his motor bike collided with a passenger van in the Sion Hill area, just outside the capital, shortly before 5 PM, Wednesday. The development forced Prime Minister Gonsalves to reschedule his New Year’s message to the nation at 8PM Wednesday evening in order that he could be with his son. Gonsalves, whose wife Eloise is also in Barbados, said that doctors had taken a decision to remove his son’s spleen but “there were no other damaged organs internally. “Everything was ok in the head. His left hand is broken in six different places and his right wrist is broken. Of course, he was beaten up all over his body,” Gonsalves reported. The Prime Minister was full of praise for the medical response teams in St. Vincent and Barbados. He said he was also grateful for the support rendered by his Barbados counterpart David Thompson and his Health Minister Donville Inniss. Gonsalves also said he had received information that the ailing former Cuban President Fidel Castro, who had met his son when he was nine years of age and had taken a liking to him, had enquired about Storm’s health.

Cops Silence Grenada Gospel Concert ST GEORGE’S, Grenada – The Grenada police Tuesday defended its decision to stop a religious concert that was designed to usher in the New Year, saying that the organisers did not have the necessary permission. Superintendent Michael Francois said that the original application from the organiser, Roger Lewis had been denied, but was amended after negotiations to allow the concert to proceed without the use of a loud speaker during the period from midnight to 5 am “Granting permission for use of a loud speaker is done in accordance with the Noise Pollution Act, and the Commissioner did not grant the permission for a number of reasons and this was explained to

the organizer. However, after negotiations a compromise was reach and it was decided that the concert can occurred but without the use of the speaker, unfortunately the organiser did not comply and instead went ahead and used the sound system,” he said. The Noise Pollution Act forbids the use of louder speakers in residential areas and Francois said that a resident called the police about the use of the loud speaker during the concert. “… when the necessary research was done it was realised by the officers on duty that permission was not granted,” Francois added. Any person who is guilty of an offence under the Noise Pollution Act is liable on summary conviction to a fine of EC$250 (US$93).

Buju Rules Out Any Plea Deal TAMPA - Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton will be held without bail on drug charges while his lawyer fights to remove a detainer placed on his client by immigration officials. That means Banton will miss the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles later this month. His album, "Rasta Got Soul," is nominated in the Best Reggae Album category. Banton has sparked controversy over lyrics that some contend advocate violence against gay people. Banton, 36, pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon to federal charges that he conspired to buy cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer in Sarasota last month. U.S. Magistrate Anthony Porcelli ordered the singer held without bail after defense attorney David Oscar Markus said he would not oppose the government's request that Banton be detained. Banton's real name is Mark Myrie. Markus later explained that there was no sense in seeking bail when immigration authorities have placed a detainer on Banton, who is in the United States on an entertainer visa. Markus said he will fight to have the detainer lifted and then seek bail on the criminal charges. He told reporters his client will fight the charges and will not enter into any plea deal with prosecutors. "We will be going to trial," Markus said. "He did not commit the crimes he's charged with," he said. "He was not in any conspiracy." Markus also decried the immigration detainer, saying, "There should be a presumption of innocence. Instead there is a presumption of guilt in immigration." He said there is "no question" his client would be allowed to post bail if not for the detainer. The criminal case is set for a status conference in February and tentatively set for a March

trial. Although cases often don't go to trial so quickly, Markus said he would push for the case to proceed swiftly. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Banton contacted a confidential informant about a possible cocaine purchase. The next day, Banton and other men met with the informant at Sarasota's La Tropicana de Havana restaurant, where the DEA and local police had set up surveillance. Eventually, the group went to a warehouse to make the cocaine deal, according to an affidavit. Authorities had outfitted the warehouse with audio and video recording devices.

Buju Banton will miss the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles later this month.

Dancehall Destroying Reggae The caption read “Jamaica to the Rescue” and the picture showed a broad smile on the face of Ed Bartlett, Jamaica’s minister of tourism, as he decorated the window of a midtown Manhattan Liberty Travel store. I had seen that smile before, approximately six months ago at a York College community forum where he spoke about developments in Jamaica. In the Q&A, Sharon Gordon, chair of the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music asked “Could dancehall be the ruination of reggae and by extension the Jamaica brand?” The minister flashed his characteristic smile and assured the audience that there was no danger of this. Dancehall, he said was bigger than reggae in many parts of the world, and all that was needed was to figure out how to capitalize on it for Jamaica. But today, judging from the comments on a very popular hip hop website, the minister might be very mistaken. Posted on the site is a video which enjoyed over 570,000 hits in just two days. The scene in the video is a dance where the crowd gathers around a couple as they undress, and proceeds to have sexual intercourse on the dance floor to the sound of dancehall music and encouragement from the DJ. Many Jamaicans have taken to Facebook with comments about this footage, voicing their disgust, in some cases shame, as they struggle to assess the episode and defend Jamaica’s honor, but judging by several of the many comments on the hip hop website, dancehall culture is inflicting serious damage to brand Jamaica; Comments such as–– …“Caribbean Black people are nasty and they have aids” or …“Only thing worst than them suckers, is the crowd around them didn’t throw one bottle” or …“Dirty gross people... where ever they're from, I hope they stay there... we don't need their kind here in the US” or …“Jamaican peeps are nasty” or …“Ha, ha, ha… I’m 15 and I just watched the whole thing”. Once upon a time, a dancehall was a place we went for recreation and had good clean fun; then dancehall became a form of music but now it’s an anti-social culture. All this time, like the crowd that did not throw a bottle, we stood by and watched the process; some of us even applauded. Some say dancehall was always, and will always be by, and for the ghetto. I beg to differ. I remember a time in Jamaica, when the school house was the dancehall and there was nothing vulgar or indecent about it. At our Kwanzaa appreciation party, we collected supplies for basic school children in Jamaica. What will become of those children? Only time will tell, but their fate is in our hands and we must do more than simply stand around. Perhaps the photo caption below the minister should have read, “Jamaica in need of rescue”. Are you down? Carlyle McKetty is President and cofounder of the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR). CPR's mission is to raise the bar in the creation, production, promotion and presentation of reggae music, elevate the profile of artists and research, codify, curate and disseminate information about the genre and its impact. Trinidadian Promoters, Entertainers Upset Over Beyonce Show PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Local promoters and entertainers say they plan to write the state-owned Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) asking it to withdraw its sponsorship of the February 18 concert featuring the American singer Beyonce. Former chief executive officer of the Caribbean Prestige Foundation, Gregory Fernandes, who is among those involved in the effort to get TSTT to rescind its decision, said that they intend submitting the letter to the company’s CEO, Roberto Peon, on Wednesday. Fernandes, speaking on local radio here, said that TSTT has already indicated that it would be reducing its funding to activities for the Carnival celebrations this year. “Bringing Beyonce at this time puts more pressure on the industry,” he said, adding “Carnival activity is a very high risk and a lot of bands suffer high losses”. Fernandes said that the promoters and entertainers “want to discuss with TSTT the position they have taken to present Beyonce in concert so soon after Carnival and their decision to cut back and even pull sponsorship of Carnival events. Fernandes also said according to media reports, the production cost for the Beyonce concert is in the vicinity of TT$10 million (US$1.4 million). The Recording Industry Association of

Trinidad and Tobago (RIATT) said it was also raising objection to the concert. “The State making a $10 million investment to stage an artiste like Beyonce in Trinidad and Tobago is a very large investment,” said RIATT general secretary Fabien Alphonso in a press statement. “Not using this occasion to initiate discussions on collaborations between Beyonce and any of our local flagship artistes would be considered a wasted opportunity as the Trinidad and Tobago Entertainment Company Ltd (TTENT) was established for this exact purpose. “Furthermore, it’s unfortunate that TTENT is not engaged in the planning process of an event of this magnitude. This would have ensured an opportunity to position local music internationally via the current largest female performer in the world,” he said. But Lisa Agard, executive head of Mobile and Legal Services at TSTT, said the company would be in breach of its contract with Beyonce if it discloses the cost for the concert. “I can’t give you exact numbers, particularly with regard to what she is costing. Not because we have any reluctance to disclose it, but there are confidentiality provisions in her contract with us,” Agard told a local newspaper. But she insisted that her company’s involvement in other activities for the Carnival would not suffer as a result of the show. “I can tell you that when you look at all of the things we are involved in whether in culture, sports

or in the community generally in Trinidad and Tobago our expenditure on those far exceeds the expenditure we are going to incur as a result of this concert.” “We have spent, we will spend and will continue to spend millions of dollars sponsoring many Carnival events. That commitment remains,” she said. Meanwhile, TSTT has confirmed that a company owned by West Indies cricket icon, Brian Lara, and star footballer Dwight Yorke, was one of the main contractors for the concert. TSTT spokesman, Grame Suite said that LAY Management has been retained by TSTT to help in the coordination and logistics associated with the event, and Agard, said the company would assume responsibility for the venue minus stage, sound and lights when the country’s largest telecommunications provider signs the contract. Public Utilities Minister Mustapha AbdulHamid is quoted in Wednesday’s publication of the NEWSDAY newspaper as ordering TSTT to produce a report over its expenditure for concert. “On the matter of the expenditure, I have asked for the facts and for a report on what the facts are,” Abdul-Hamid told the newspaper. The promoters say the most expensive tickets for the show, valued at TT$1,600 (US$266) have already been sold out and the Trinidad Guardian newspaper reported Wednesday that fans of the singer in Suriname have been paying as much as US$860 to travel to Trinidad to attend the one day event which is part of Beyonce Worldwide tour.

Don’t Want to “Sweat Out” Your Hair? Walk Your Way to Health Instead By Donna Richardson Joyner Each day many African-American women have to make the tough choice between working out and maintaining their hair style. If you fall into this category, then a new report by AARP may change your mind. Recently, AARP conducted research among African-American women age 45+ and African-American hair stylists, regarding African-American women’s hair issues as a barrier to engaging in regular physical activity. The results were simple – after spending valuable time and money to get their hair done, African-American women are not trying to “sweat it out”, or get their hair wet by working out. However, the research showed also, that there are solutions to overcoming this particular barrier to good health. There are several hairstyles that are conducive to working out. “African American women can take care of their bodies like they take care of their hair!” The African-American women who were surveyed said that managing time to do their hair and having time to work out is a critical factor in making a commitment to exercise or participating in any physical activity on a regular basis. These women are forced to schedule their exercise around the times they have hair appointments which usually occur every two weeks. They exercise more a few days before their appointment, but during the first few days, or even the first week after going to the salon they will not exercise or participate in any physical activity whatsoever. Hair stylists too, indicated that the concerns of their customers most often are damaged hair and the challenges of how to keep hair healthy. Damaged hair due to breakage, dry hair and scalp, dandruff, thinning hair, or “high maintenance” hair—due to relaxers, weaves, or coloring – makes many clients unable to exercise and maintain a healthy hair style. For many who may have seen the recent Chris Rock movie, “Good Hair” if you didn’t know it before, you know now that African-American women’s hair concerns are real, and can start even in childhood. Hot combs, kiddie perms, then braids,

Skipping exercise because of hair concerns is an issue that African American women can’t afford to ignore. weaves, relaxers, coloring, are among the measures we take to keep our hair looking good and staying up with the trends. However, much of this is damaging, and partnering these hair altering processes with the moisture from perspiration when working out, can be a virtual nightmare. But skipping exercise because of hair concerns is an issue that African American women can’t afford to ignore. “You have to have balance. Your hair cannot be an excuse to keep you from working out. You can keep your body healthy and your hair healthy.” According to the Journal of the National Medical Association, the barrier to being physically active that African-American women’s hair concerns pose has risen to the level of a public health issue, because as a group, African-American women are in greater need of exercise. Seventy-seven percent of Black women are overweight and 49 percent are obese. Moreover, African-Americans are suf-

fering higher rates of chronic illness, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, than the U.S. population overall. However, the good news is that African-American women can get the benefits of working out without creating hair problems. Walking two 10 minute intervals and including at least one vigorous physical activity can be accomplished without being concerned about your hair. Another beneficial and inexpensive investment is a pedometer. Attach it to your hip while you’re a work or going about your daily activities, to motivate you to stay active. You can start with small goals of 1,000 to 2,000 steps a day with an ultimate goal of 10,000 steps per day. This way, you are helping to increase physical activity and to achieve goals without sweating a lot. An additionally enjoyable technique is to start a walking program with friends, family, neighbors or co-workers. Start out naturally – either by walking around your neighborhood or during lunch breaks – and then plan more vigorous and longer bouts of walking near the time of salon visits. If moisture gets to your hair, at least you will be on your way to getting it done and getting that style just how you like it. Overall, reverse your thinking – it is truly better to be proactive about maintaining good health, than to sacrifice your physical well-being for that “coifed do”. But by walking, you can actually do both – you can have a healthy lifestyle and maintain that cute hairstyle too! Jamaica’s Olympic spinter Veronica Campbell-Brown

Campbell-Brown Preps For 2010 Indoor Season ATLANTA, Georgia – Jamaica’s two-time Olympic sprint champion Veronica CampbellBrown is targeting an indoor season in 2010. From her new training base in Georgia, the 27-year-old Campbell-Brown is battling chilly temperatures in Georgia “with a view of competing indoors”. Campbell-Brown, her training partner, Dexter Lee and former 100-meter world record holder Asafa Powell visited Singapore on a promotional trip last month for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games later this year. “Singapore will this year host the first Youth Olympic Games so the three of us were there to

promote this,” Campbell-Brown said in her latest contribution to IAAF Online Diaries. “In exchange, the Jamaican government will obtain grants to conduct repairs on both the National Stadium track and the warm-up track,” she added. Campbell-Brown, who won back-to-back Olympic 200-meter titles in 2004 and 2008, is reported to be aiming at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championship in Qatar in March. “My competitive schedule is still being worked on, however, I am looking forward to the 2010 season,” Campbell-Brown said.

Bolan, Dowrich Shine In Windies U19 Warm-Up Victory TAURANGA, New Zealand – West Indies used imposing performances from pacer Nelson Bolan and batsman Shane Dowrich to outgun Northern Districts A by two wickets Wednesday in an unofficial ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup warm-up match. Unchallenged by the target they were set after ripping out Northern Districts A for a flimsy 123 in 36.4 overs, West Indies – after an agreement between the two captains – decided on a self-prescribed target of 215 off 50 overs and achieved victory with 14 balls to spare. Bolstered by a fine unbeaten half-century from Dowrich, Windies U19s finished on 220 for eight off 47.4 overs. Wicket-keeper/batsman Dowrich showed good form in the huge morale boosting win over a team with six regular first-class players. Barbadian Dowrich slammed 71 not out from 55 balls chasing the informal, more demanding target and achieved it handsomely. Dowrich looked at ease while at the crease and this is good news for the West Indies team as they head into the U19 CWC next week. He received good support from captain Andre Creary, who belted a hard-hitting 38 and Evin Lewis (36). Earlier, Nevisian fast bowler Bolan was at the top of his game in claiming four for 30 and left arm spinner Jomel Warrican chipped in with two for 26, as the hosts — choosing the bat first – struggled badly in front of a good crowd at Bay Oval. Windies U19 manager Omar Khan was pleased with his team’s first practice match on the trip “I thought that the guys did very well, given the fact that this is their first game on tour. The opposition was not that bad because included in the Northern Districts ‘A’ team were six regular first team players,” Khan said. The Caribbean side’s second warm-up match against the same team takes place Thursday. “There are a number of areas in which the coach would like the players to improve and this was noted and will be dealt with at practice,” Khan added. More than half of the teams for the 16-team tournament have already arrived for the ICC U19 World Cup beginning on January 15. West Indies will start against Pakistan before facing Bangladesh on January 17 and Papua New Guinea two days later in their remaining Group D matches. The two top teams from each of the four groups will move on to the Championship quarter-final phase and the bottom two will play in the Plate event.

Pollard Hits Century In Win ADELAIDE, Australia – West Indies batsman Kieron Pollard smashed a belligerent halfcentury and grabbed two wickets to propel South Australia Redbacks to a 91-run crushing of Victoria Bushrangers in the Twenty20 Big Bash on Thursday. The right-handed Pollard won the showdown with his Trinidadian and West Indies teammate Dwayne Bravo, as he carved out a 22-ball 52 and then returned to snatch two for eight to put the hosts one step closer to the finals of the tournament. Bravo, meanwhile, struggled. He went wicket-less in three overs that cost 40 runs and then scored just seven from a similar number of balls. Behind Pollard’s fireworks, South Australia reached 202 for seven from their allotted 20 overs after winning the toss and batting at the Adelaide Oval. Fast bowler Shaun Tait then claimed three with for 12 to shock Victoria and help reduce them to 111 all out off 14 overs. Amazingly, Tait was given the Man-of-the-Match award, despite Pollard’s superb all-round display. Daniel Harris slammed 48 from 33 balls and Graham Manou stroked 21 from 11 balls, to give South Australia a rousing start of 56 from just 27 balls.

After both were dismissed, the innings stumbled to 120 for five in the 14th over before Pollard took charge. He blasted three fours and four gigantic sixes in posting 45 from 27 balls for the sixth wicket with Cameron Borgas who scored 21. Pollard then added a further 37 from 13 deliveries for the seventh wicket with Daniel Christian (eight not out) before he was run out off the final ball of the innings. Andrew McDonald (2-25), John Hastings (2-30), Clint McKay (2-47) all picked up two wickets apiece. The Redbacks were given a dream start when Tait grabbed the wickets of Brad Hodge (0), captain Cameron White (0) and David Hussey (14) to reduce Victoria to 20 for four in the third over. Bravo looked ominous when he lofted the fourth ball he faced over wide long on for four but could not sustain his good form in the tournament when he was run out in the eighth over after being sent back by top-scorer Aaron Finch. The 23-year-old right-hander cracked 48 from 38 balls with six fours and a six but wickets clattered around him as Mark Cleary (2-26) and Daniel Christian (2-30) also claimed two wickets each.

T&T Ex-National Basketballer Diaz Dies PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Trinidad and Tobago’s basketball fraternity is mourning the passing of former national women’s basketball player Margaret Diaz. The body of the 47-year-old Diaz was discovered last Thursday at her home in Penal. According to reports, an autopsy carried out on Monday by pathologist Eastlyn McDonald, was deemed inconclusive and further testing will be done to determine the cause of death. Diaz last played locally for Unit Trust Maloney Pistons and was instrumental in that team winning the first National Women’s Club Championship in 2003. Unit Trust Maloney coach Jackson Charles said Diaz was one of the best women to play the sport in T&T. “She was great, her personality was one with a difference. She was a very instrumental player, and she has set standards for other female players to follow,” said Charles. Diaz, also a track star in her younger days, also coached a couple of teams including Mirak Stars — her last club — which played in the 2008-09 Stag Super Ten Basketball tournament.
