Over Cathie Black ‘Damage’

A

dvocates for Justice, a public interest law firm, Wednesday, filed initial papers for a civil lawsuit against Mayor Michael Bloomberg on behalf of a class of all New York City public school parents. The Mayor is charged with committing “misfeasance of office” through the appointment of Ms. Cathleen P. Black as Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education and thereby damaging the education of public school children in the City of New York. The 14 Claimant parents, along with the newly formed New York City Parents Union, are demanding $100 million in compensatory damages from Mr. Bloomberg personally as the individual now held accountable under New York State’s education law for the performance of the public education system, as well as a public apology from the Mayor for his handling of Ms. Black’s appointment and brief tenure in office. A Notice of Claim setting forth the nature of the lawsuit was filed today by Advocates for Justice with the Office of New York City Comptroller John Liu. This legal action -- possibly the first of its kind in the history of New York City -- claims that the Mayor had or should have had full knowledge of Ms. Black’s inability to perform at an appropriate level in the position of Chancellor. Section 3(f) of the Notice Claim states that “Michael Bloomberg, as Mayor, has a fiduciary obligation to

Former New York City Schools Chancellor Cathie Black speaks with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg during a groundbreaking ceremony in New York. Black resigned Thursday, April 7, after a rocky three months that included parents heckling her at board meetings, plummeting poll numbers and the departures of several deputy chancellors. act with the utmost of prudence and responsibility in running the New York City school system. He either knew, or should have known, that the appointment of Black was not in the best interests of the system, but he appointed her nonetheless. By so acting, Michael Bloomberg breached his fiduciary duty to the parents of all school children in New York City public schools and is guilty of ‘misfeasance of office.’ “ The parents want Mayor Bloomberg to place $100 million of his own money -- or approximately $1 million for each day of Ms. Black’s nearly 100-day tenure -- into a fund used exclusively for the training and development of teachers and supervisors as compensation for the damage to the morale and performance of staff and teachers, which therefore impaired the education of students. Arthur Z. Schwartz, attorney for

the Claimants, emphasized that the Notice of Claim was a precursor to a lawsuit against Bloomberg personally, not one against the City of New York. “The Mayor’s ego, and his insistence on ‘selling’ the school system rather than building it from the ground up, led to this disaster. The Mayor took a lot from the City’s school children with this error, and he should be required to make repairs - in a sum that he is uniquely qualified to do,” said Schwartz. Ms. Mariama Sanoh, an active Brooklyn parent who is a Claimant and a founder of the New York City Parents Union, said that Mayor Bloomberg abused his power. “When outraged parents stated that Cathie Black was unqualified to be Chancellor, Mayor Bloomberg accused us -- the real stakeholders in our children’s education -- of playing politics,” Sanoh said. “But it was Mayor

Bloomberg who abused his power by appointing someone with no education experience to lead the nations largest public school system. And it was Mayor Bloomberg who played politics with the New York State Education Commissioner to get unqualified Cathie Black approved for the job. The Mayor has committed misfeasance and our children have suffered. There have to be consequences for these bad choices.” Ms. Shino Tanikawa, a Claimant and member of Manhattan’s Community Education Council 2, demanded consistency in how education matters are treated. “Accountability has been the foundation of Mayor Bloomberg’s alleged “reform” agenda, yet he himself has not been accountable to us for any of his misguided decisions,” she said. “Our children have suffered his arrogance and egotism enough, and we, the parents, demand that the Mayor now be held accountable.” Central Brooklyn parent Muba Yarofulani is a founding member of the New York City Parents Union, Co-President of the Coalition for Public Education (CPE), and President of the District 18 Presidents Council. She objected to Mayor Bloomberg’s dominance over the public education system. “The 1.1 million students in New York City’s public schools deserved a qualified Chancellor,” said Yarofulani. “Mayor Bloomberg refused to hear the cries of parents from communities like mine; we knew that Cathie Black should not be appointed. This Mayor’s dictatorship over our education system is failing our children, and I am one of those mothers who will continue to battle his wealth and political might. Mayor Bloomberg must be held accountable for his failures.”

Brownsville, Back On Track By Deidre Olivera-Douglas

T

here really is so much to do and so much going on in Brownsville, it’s amazing. There are more pilot programs, budding businesses, and politics, happening in Brownsville, that it’s an amazing whirlwind of activity.

Lets start with one of the major players in “whats –what.” And this would be the District Attorney Charles Hynes and the “back on track program.” It is stated as a community re-entry program for youthful ex-offenders with components for job readiness/ case work/ etcetera, etcetera, etc. A ComAlert program for parolees and recorded offenders; which they state that they will help ex offenders get employment, A G.R.A.S.P. for Girls….. and everything else from putting on your

socks for you, to wiping your nose if its runny. HahaHa folks, just kidding about the last two, but they do propose to provide a slew of services that will be beneficial in the community. Does it sound too good to be true? Tell me at thebrownsvilleadvocate@BLOGSPOT or infowomanup.brownsville@blogger.com They are very clear that the ultimate goal is to put a youth court in Brownsville. I personally don’t see anyone willing to jump in front of the District Attorneys office and say, “no,” so I am pretty sure “what Lola wants … Lola will get.” So far, They’ve got one social worker, and that seems like some pretty big shoes to fill. I mean, statistically speaking--- black males living in “the hood”... equals a lot of people needing a lot of help (Lol). We can only propose that they look into hiring community residents for open positions, which will probably help reduce the crime in the area. I know, shame on me, always bringin up that ugly little blemish that I’m always “exposing” called COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. Well, that’s a horse of a different color, and to get “back on track”….I have to say there are two really good things about this

program. Moving forward, I think the best quality of this program are the people who are working this program. I mean, they could accomplish the same feats, and be complete *&^% about it. However, Mrs. Mary Hughes is refreshingly open, and (how can I say it?) …..just NICE. Does anyone remember that word? Not a pushover or bully. Just…Nice. Aside from her “Kick Butt” shoe collection, and her no nonsense attitude, I think having her to communicate with makes a world of difference. I also can’t neglect to mention, Mr. Lance Ogiste, who is also very “down to earth,” given his position as senior staff to the District Attorney. There are others at the DA’s Office, that also seem willing to give us our medicine with honey….and for that…. In sum, they have a plan and they are willing to sit down and formulate a community relationship. I believe, WE NEED TO DO JUST THAT. Formulate, speak up when we are dissatisfied and support this program by making it successful ...... so that it benefits everyone......not just ...........someone.

There is still the “ALMIGHTY DOLLAR!” We talk about how situations need to change. We are unhappy with prices. We are oftentimes disrespected and treated like we don’t matter, right within our own neighborhoods, by stores that we support with our business. I just want to revise and remind our young and old people about the POWER OF THE BOYCOTT!! If you don’t like a store policy. Stop buying from them! Simple. If your neighborhood store is disrespectful to someone else, stop buying from them. If prices are to high … stop supporting the business. We Deserve RESPECT and QUALITY merchandise. Somewhere along the line, we forgot HOW to STICK TOGETHER FOR EACH OTHER! Our numbers speak louder than any speaker. Together, we can not only change our neighborhoods, we can also change our nation. BOYCOTTING is about protesting or showing our disapproval regarding a treatment or policy. It might be a sacrifice, but it will be worth it. IT WORKED BEFORE AND IT STILL WORKS NOW.

Did We Forget About ‘Civil Rights?’ “Civil rights include the ensuring of peoples’ physical integrity and safety; protection from discrimination on grounds such as physical or mental disability, gender, religion, race, national origin, age, or sexual orientation; and individual rights such as the freedoms of thought and conscience, speech and expression, religion, the press, and movement.” Wikipedia

We are still entitled to our rights. Has your freedom of thought been altered??!!

Vets Get A Leg Up In Job Market

I

f you have retired from the military and are transitioning to a civilian career, it’s time to take an inventory of your transferable skills - the skills that will place you light years ahead of your civilian peers in a recovering economy.

The job market remains sluggish and veterans in particular are challenged in finding work. But there is good news. Through the experience and knowledge gained from military service, including training and coursework, you will have gained valuable transferable skills that can serve you well in your transition to civilian life. The challenge is to define these skills and sell them - and yourself - to your future employer. What are transferable skills? These are the proficiencies mainly acquired through broad work, education and life experience, and they translate across jobs and career fields. For instance, if you worked as a training specialist in the military, you have probably mastered communications and personnel management skills, as well as leadership abilities that are sought and valued in business and industry, government or education. Along with transferable skills most people also have developed work-content skills that are technical and job-specific. These typically require formal training, are more specific to trades or professions, and have a separate skills-based vocabulary or jargon that is unique to the job, such as knowledge of certain sophisticated equipment operation. Workcontent skills are not as portable as transferable skills, but when combined with them, they reflect the strength of your overall work ethic and demonstrate the array of accomplishments and abilities you have attained. What employers want Prospective employers have one important question: What can you do for us? The answer is often found in your portable, transferable skills. These also influence how you prepare a top-notch resume and cover letter, conduct your job search and con-

vey your talents in an interview. As you recognize and reveal these skills, you will also get a boost of self-esteem about your own achievements. Identify your transferable skills Start by reviewing your past or current educational, work, military and life experiences. Did your experience teach you to analyze data and write reports? Supervise others? Work as a team? Make quick decisions or meet deadlines? Organize and implement projects? If you can analyze, write, plan, organize, lead others and work with a team -- you have just identified six highly valued skills you can place on a resume, discuss in a job interview and put to use in a new work setting. “Veterans may not realize the many exceptional transferable skills they have acquired through their military service,” says Maribeth Gunner Pulliam, the career services coordinator at Excelsior College. “Veterans are trained to lead by example, work respectfully and collaboratively, and accomplish tasks on time - even when facing adversity. They understand the importance of dedication and perseverance. These are all skills employers seek.” When starting a military transition job search, you can also identify your transferable and workcontent skills with online career assessment tools and career guidebooks. Keep this list updated over time, as you progress and evolve in your career. This “skills package” record will be a valuable resource for your future, and a reminder of how far you have come. Trouble getting started? If you are like many, taking inventory of your various skills and categorizing them may seem like a daunting task. There are several online tools you can use to get started. Excelsior offers free advice at its site (www.excelsior.edu/military-resources) as do many other colleges. The most important thing is to take your time to reflect upon all that you have done. Consider also talking with your friends, family and coworkers to discover more about the valuable transferable skills they believe you exhibit. They may be able to provide helpful observations that you may not see. These small steps will help you better prepare for a job search and feel more confident in your ability to convince employers that you are the person they’ve been looking to hire.

Fear Not Beloved For I Am With Thee

By Apostle Arlene Israel, New York Liberty Star

F

ear thou not for I am with thee: be not dismayed for I am thy God.I will strengthen thee;yea I will help thee:yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear is a very powerful weapon being waged by the devil to defeat God’s people and curtail the plans and purposes God has for his people. The whole world has been gripped with fear because of the bad news and happenings all over the world. The instability of the financial system, termed financial meltdown has created an havock in our society and has managed to launch an attack upon mankind that has almost swept him off his feet. This has resulted in the loss of income,

loss of jobs, homes, and businesses, giving rise to distress upon distress to the extent of even death (suicide). The frequency of so many disasters eg. tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamies, flooding, famines diseases and suchlike has shaken the foundations of our faith and we have plunged into a sea of fear. These are good reasons for people to be fearful, however I must draw your attention to the word of God Luke21:25-28 And there shall be signs in the sun,and in the moon, and in the stars and upon earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and waves roaring.Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and looking and for looking after those things that are coming on the earth.:for the powers of the earth shall be shaken. And then shall they see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, lift up your heads;for your redemption draweth nigh. Support And Resources Can Help Those Affected By Mental Illness

I

n a given year, about one in four adults experience a mental health disorder.

One such mental health disorder, major depressive disorder, also known as depression, is estimated to affect approximately 14 million American adults and is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. For individuals diagnosed with depression, there are support and resources, along with tools to help people have an open and honest conversation with their doctor about their condition. Recognized every May, National Mental Health Month encourages awareness of mental and emotional health and seeks to increase the public’s understanding of mental health issues. Individuals diagnosed with a mental health disorder have the opportunity to learn about numerous resources to help them manage their illness. During National Mental Health Month and beyond, one such resource, Take on Depression, is designed to support, educate, and inspire those affected by depression. Sponsored by AstraZeneca, Take on Depression encourages those affected by the symptoms of depression to talk with their doctor about creating a treatment plan. Additionally, various advocacy organizations host events highlight-

Depression can interfere with an individual’s thoughts, behavior, mood, activity and physical health. ing mental health issues affecting individuals throughout local communities. National Mental Health Month represents an opportunity to educate others as well as build awareness around support and resources, which can be a valuable tool to help manage living with mental illnesses such as depression. Unlike normal instances of sadness, loss, or passing mood states, depression is persistent and can interfere with an individual’s thoughts, behavior, mood, activity, and physical health. Some people with depression will experience just one episode, but more often will experience more than one and have the disorder throughout

their lives. TakeonDepression.com provides valuable information and resources for people who may still experience symptoms of depression, including a mood and goal tracking diary, a list of questions to ask your doctor, medication inventory list, health care team appointment schedules, and prescription refill lists. To learn more about Take on Depression and access helpful resources, visit www.TakeonDepression. com. Additionally, visit the Take on Depression Facebook page for helpful tips and inspiration to help manage depression.

5 Ways To Prevent Hearing Loss

H

earing loss affects more than 34 million Americans. If detected early, it may be a preventable chronic disease. Here are 10 ways to help prevent, delay or reduce the extent of hearing loss. 1. Noise exposure. Are you one of the more than 22 million American workers exposed to excessive levels of noise in the workplace? Are you one of those listening to iPods, shooting firearms, riding motorbikes, or working with lawn and garden tools? These devices are causing hearing loss at alarmingly high rates. Most noise is painless, progressive, permanent and preventable. Noise exposure is the second most common cause of hearing loss worldwide and is the most preventable. You should wear hearing protectors or avoid

exposure to loud sounds. Turn down the volume and reduce the length of time you listen to your iPod or mp3 player. Studies show that people who wear noise canceling or noise reduction earphones with iPod or mp3 players typically listen to music at safer levels. 2. Cotton swabs. Why take a chance on making matters worse? Cotton swabs and ear candling are unhealthy practices to remove earwax, to clean or scratch your ear canals. Don’t use cotton swabs to clean inside your ear canal. It can push the earwax in further and you could puncture your eardrum. 3. Smoking. Smoking tobacco and second-hand smoke can contribute to hearing loss. Studies suggest that chronic nicotine exposure impairs the brain’s ability to “hear” and interpret sound. Along with the other reasons to stop smoking, you can reduce your likelihood of greater hearing loss if you quit or stay out of smoky places. 4. Diabetes. Diabetics are twice as likely to have hearing loss. Eating a healthy diet, maintaining proper weight and daily exercise can help you avoid type 2 diabetes. 5. Alcohol. Too much alcohol can contribute to permanent hearing loss. Recently, researchers found that drinking 2 beers in a half an hour can cause temporary hearing loss for up to 16 hours.

sought, and has been kept apprised of the work of Team Jamaica Bickle on behalf of Jamaican and Caribbean athletes in The Diaspora. “I am particularly pleased with the work that Team Jamaica Bickle does and continues to do on behalf of the athletes and to that extent the people of Jamaica and the Diaspora,” said Ambassador Marks. “On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I am delighted to be the honored guest of the Team Jamaica Bickle Penn Relay weekend activities, 2011, and equally happy to embrace the youth of the nation while they represent school and country with pride. The flag of Jamaica flies proudly at Franklin Field, a first for any foreign country, and graciously so, due to the efforts of Team Jamaica Bickle” For the past 17 years Team Jamaica Bickle has sought to make the Penn Relays experience, a nurturing one, filled with great memories and moments for the athletes. The team Jamaica village provides for the athletes a “home-away-from-home,” partnering with Vincent HoSang and the Caribbean Food Delights brand to provide Jamaican meals and refreshments, powerful reminders of home. In addition, physical therapy and other medical care; transportation daily to Franklin Field and other amenities are all in place for the

athletes’ comfort. Hotel rooms and air fares are offered to the teams at subsidized rates, negotiated by Team Jamaica Bickle. Team Jamaica Bickle relies heavily on contributions from Diaspora businesses and corporate donations as well as fundraisers to meet the annual budget of approximately, USD $67,000, (approx. JA $5.6 mil.) needed to fund its operations. It is estimated that over the 17 year period the organization has spent close to USD $1.1 mil (JA$95.2 mil) all for the great cause of assisting these athletes who lay it all on the line, in pursuit of personal and national glory on the field. “We recognize the power of the athletes and we consider them “Brand Ambassadors” for country, each time they step on the field,” said Irwine Clare, TJB CEO & Founder. “We consider it our duty to ensure that they are kept safe, fed and cared for, especially since they are on foreign soil.” Thousands of Diaspora residents from cities all over the US will converge on Franklin Field to revel in the exploits of our talented athletes on the field and to cheer on their countrymen. It will be a carnival-like atmosphere where patriotism and love of country will tower large in the stands and on the grounds at Franklin Field.

reggae Singer beenieman Tells bajans

‘Ease Up Jamaican’ P rime Minister Freundel Stuart said surveillance cameras will be installed at the Grantley Adams International Airport as Barbados continues to deal with the controversy sparked by allegations made by Jamaican Shanique Myrie of sexual abuse by immigration officials on her arrival in Barbados last month.

According to recent reports, in his first televised news conference with the state owned Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on Tuesday night, Stuart, who became head of government following the death of Prime Minister David Thompson last October, said that Myrie is free to return to Barbados and identify the person who assaulted her. Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, Kenneth Baugh, said that the matter could be headed to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) if Bridgetown and Kingston cannot work out their differences. The prime minister said that his administration had moved to deal with the incident as soon as it became aware of it, adding, “There was also a coordinated investigation into the affair by the police. I have in my possession a full report by the police on the issue.” He made it clear that no obstacles would be put in place to prevent the 20-year-old Jamaican woman from returning to the island. Last month, Jamaica sent a high level delegation to Bridgetown for talks with Barbadian authorities on the issue after Myrie said she was subjected to invasive cavity searches by a female immigration officer when she arrived in Barbados on March 14.

In the meantime, a leading regional entertainer has called on the Barbadian immigration officials to stop pressuring Jamaicans. The Barbados Nation reported that dancehall deejay Beenie Man called on the Barbadian authorities to “ease up Jamaican. Stop pressure Jamaican,” he said from the stage at the Reggae Beach Party in Brandon Beach St. Michael, on Sunday. In reference to the ongoing dispute about alleged mistreatment of Jamaicans by Barbados immigration, the well known entertainer, whose real name is Moses David, claimed that several of his friends had similar experiences. “Sometimes you get fed up ah one thing, yuh know. Cause you have been all over de world and den sometimes you doan really need to come to Barbados. The immigration need to think twice,” he said. Beenie man said that he had been arrested on his last visit to Barbados but that he bore no grudge. “Vibes nice and de people dem enjoy demself and me like that. Thank you, Barbados,” he said.

As Oil Prices Rise

Caribbean Leaders Worry About Libya

F

or some Caribbean governments, particularly those in the sub-regional Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). the events unfolding in Libya is more than just an attempt to remove an African leader from power. According to a CMC report, for the nine-member OECS grouping, who have adopted their own lines of engagement with Libya, much to the concern of some opposition parties, their main concern is what will become of Libyan investment projects in region. “Whether we like it or not, we’re still very much dependent on oil from the Middle East and most of economies are driven by that,” said Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda, adding, “To the extent that there is instability and war and so

on, it has an impact.” As leaders of the OECS member states anxiously await the outcome of several negotiated agreements with Libya -- including the opening of a Libyan embassy in St Lucia and a bank in St Kitts -- Spencer admitted that he is nervously watching developments in the North African country. In the midst of the unrest in Libya, leaders in the region have found themselves caught between the proverbial “rock and a hard place”.

Many of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ major development projects in recent years have benefitted from Libyan funding. In Dominica, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit reiterated his government’s position that Dominica will not break ties with Libya because of the ongoing turmoil. The same stance has been taken by Prime Minister Stephenson King of St Lucia, and Grenada has also found itself in a similar position-- that of anxiously awaiting financial aid.

Hop on your email, send text messages like mad or phone in some sweet nothings on Monday, when you’re all about great communication, romantic and otherwise. The next few days could be a little emotionally rocky, so be sure to take time out for you. You’ve got the best energy you’ve had in eons on Thursday and Friday, so use it or lose it! Let others try too hard; your sex appeal’s perfectly clear even if you’re wearing a potato sack. This weekend, criticism’s easy; it’s the constructive part you should worry about.

What are you hoping for in the realm of romance? Get specific and get decisive as the week starts. Those dreams can become delicious reality, but it’ll require making moves — and making them with your heart in the right place. You’re warm and wonderful now, but it’s nothing compared to the heat you generate when Thursday and Friday come. You’re generous and gorgeous, and love’s in the air wherever you go! Try the middle ground when it comes to the realm of romance this weekend, though; let love evolve.

(21 March - 20 April)

TAURUS

(21 April - 21 May)

Lighthearted and lively is the way love should be as the week begins, and you might even feel like sharing a few feelings. Expand your comfort zone and enjoy letting a certain someone in on what’s on your mind and in your heart! Then finesse it when it comes to romance on Thursday and Friday. What you say and the way you say it have a huge impact now — consider that less really can be more. Good times are in the stars this weekend, as well as delicious downtime — doing nothing at all (with someone in particular?) looks like a plan.

Gemini

(May 21 - June 20)

Flirt much? The answer’s likely ‘heck yes!’ on Monday, when you’re particularly hot stuff. Tuesday and Wednesday may find you on the more introspective side, however; or maybe they should, at least. Look within and sort through certain feelings, and your love path will become much clearer. It’s back to fun energy around Thursday and Friday, when speaking your heart and mind can get you into all sorts of delicious messes. You make being opinionated look great! But cut the chitchat on Sunday, and be aware of a certain someone’s main point, too.

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

Hello, hot stuff! The start of the week ought to find you pretty much on fire, and lighting a fire under your love life’s behind has never been easier. Get some sweet stuff started — there’s no time like the present! It’s the future you’ll be thinking of around Thursday and Friday, however — or at least you should be contemplating it. Where do you want your love path to lead? You’re the one choosing it, after all. This weekend, you’re more objective than usual — again, it’s an ideal time for taking a clear look at all things romance related.

(July 23 - August 22)

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

Hold off on romantic matters on Monday — there’s a strong possibility that opening your mouth will involve inserting your foot in it. However, Tuesday and Wednesday look lovely for enjoying the company of others — and maybe one other in particular. You’re mighty enjoyable yourself, and the give-and-take between friends and more-than-friends is extra rewarding on these days. You’ll want to consider the source of any love-related advice around the end of the workweek. Do they ‘get’ you? Sweet and deep understanding is in the stars this weekend — you’re amazing now.

Libra

(September 23 - October 23)

Make plans and share your feelings on Monday, when your energy’s warm and wonderful. Be ready to kindle the spark of a new romantic idea, too! Tuesday and Wednesday ask you to get back to work — and to work through a few things in the realm of romance, too. Process and move forward. Any of those plans you made on Monday for Thursday or Friday are especially favored by the stars, and you’re likely to add in a last-minute stroke of genius, too. It’s great for dates! The weekend’s great for socializing, solo or with your honey if you’ve got one.

Scorpio

(October 24 - November 22)

Wait for it — for romance-related activity, that is. Monday’s not the time for making any Casanova-style moves. On Tuesday and Wednesday, however, you can pretty much follow your nose to sweet stuff on your love path. In fact, the less you try to control where things go now, the better! Work could be crazy-busy around Thursday and Friday, but looking and listening carefully, both with others and within, is key. When the weekend comes (thank goodness!), you’re extra good at making arrangements and

noticing the little things — most useful when it comes to love!

Sagittarius

(November 23 - December 21)

You’re hearing what they’re saying, but do they really mean it? Actions speak louder than words in matters of the heart as the week begins. Apply this knowledge both to others and to what you say and do. When Thursday and Friday come, you’re looking and feeling fantastic if the stars have their way. These are fabulous days (and nights, naturally) for exploring further with an existing love interest or locating a brand-new one. Enjoy the energy while it lasts — this weekend, you may just want to be alone for some relaxation and contemplation.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

You’re super-smart on Monday, but don’t forget the emotional part of the equation, too. Those around you may be having some erratic reactions around Tuesday and Wednesday, especially when it comes to sticky romantic matters. Don’t be too quick to take things to heart, as change is in the air. The stars put the emphasis on career at the end of the workweek, but destressing with friends or your sweetie if you’ve got one is important, too. This weekend, the energy’s great and so are you. Enjoy!

Aquarius

(Born January 20 - February 19)

You’re marvelous on Monday if the stars have their say! So hop out of bed, get work out of the way and enjoy time with your honey or check out the romantic possibilities. Don’t let your feelings run away with you on Tuesday and Wednesday — look into the reasons why you’re having these thoughts in a focused way (a friend’s help could be instrumental). The cosmic energy centers on relationships and independence on Thursday and Friday. Find your balance and keep it through the weekend, when being grounded is especially important.

Pisces

(February 20 - March 20)

It’s ‘handle with care’ time on Monday — love’s a little tricky, and you need some TLC. But Tuesday and Wednesday look fabulous for romantic matters, and you look fabulous, too! You have a way with words that’s especially suited to online flirtation or other electronic types of reaching out. At the end of the workweek, be careful of the intersection of love and work, even if you’re simply getting too involved in a coworker’s love drama. When the weekend comes, putting someone else first is especially important.

I

Star Advice End Your Heartache Now

was friends with a girl last year and then it turned into a relationship. We only went out for a month but I really liked this girl. I thought she was the one - until one day she told me she had cheated on me with three guys in one weekend. Nothing major; just kissing but I still broke up with her. Ever since I have quit dating and I have a somewhat of a dislike for women and I really hate her. I always think that all women are sluts and I know all aren’t but every one I come in contact with turns out bad. Everyone tells me I’m to young to give up (19) but I don’t care...every girl makes me sick and I don’t wanna waste my sweetness and kindness on people who will just hurt me! And no Im not gay! Wow! Sounds like this girl really did a numnber on you! Your trust in women has really been shattered but please remember that this is only temporary. As we go through life, we have many bad experiences but each one of these exists so that we can learn more about ourselves and the type of people we want to be with. So one girl hurt you, so what! You might have thought she was the one, but I guess she wasn’t! All that means is that the right one is going to appear one day. If you isolate yourself, you will not be available to meet her... and then what! In the meantime, while you are getting over this, take really good care of yourself, work on your pride and self-confidence, and keep your distance from enmeshments with women in general. Treat girls only as friends and companions but do not get emotionally involved. Believe it or not, one day, your pain will leave you and the perfect girl will appear. I guarantee it.

California

The trip of a lifetime without leaving the country

E

veryone has their ideal “dream vacation” and as much as those dreams depend on location, they’re also made up of once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

But often, people put those longed-for experiences on the back burner, thinking that it’s far more fantasy than possibility. The truth is, you might be closer to your dream trip than you imagined - it just takes a little creative thinking to make it happen. In fact, you don’t need to look beyond the borders of the United States to find a destination that can be all things to all travelers. Take California: Whether you’re a gourmet, a film buff, a sports enthusiast or a parent, the opportunities to delve into the activities that you love are there in abundance - and on a world-class level. For oenophiles, California’s wine regions

are as enticing a destination as any wine-producing areas in the world. A tour of Napa and Sonoma, visiting wineries and taking in the idyllic scenery, ranks as one of the best wine-centric vacations in the world. Randy Lewis, former race car driver and now owner of Lewis Cellars, knows well the allure of California. Travelers have the opportunity to win a meeting with Lewis and seven other renowned Californians and delve deeper into their unique worlds and experiences by entering the California Travel & Tourism Commission “Live Like A Californian” sweepstakes, which begins April 25 and runs for eight weeks. The sunshine, beaches and enticing climate of California has been a draw for travelers for decades, and those who want to get out in the surf have the perfect opportunity to do so all along the California coast. First-time surfers and experienced riders alike can find the experience of a lifetime getting to know the gorgeous coastal beaches - beloved by surfing legends like Jack O’Neill, who invented wetsuits and

opened one of California’s first surf shops in Santa Cruz, just south of San Francisco. Foodies looking for a palate-pleasing getaway find the meals of their dreams throughout the state. From sophisticated fine dining to delectable street food - like Korean-influenced tacos from famed Kogi food truck pioneer Roy Choi - the quality and diversity of dining opportunities available in California would be hard for any destination to rival. In September, the state’s culinary attributes will be further highlighted with state-wide California Wine Month activities. Wineries from Mendocino County down to the Temecula Valley celebrate with deals on wine tasting flights and vintner dinners paired with wine country escapes. After all, the Golden State is the perfect place to pair wine and food. Those who love winter sports but aren’t so crazy about winter find a unique attraction in California: Snow doesn’t come to you - you go to the snow. With places like Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain on the agenda, you can

spend time on the slopes and still enjoy beautiful weather. And if time allows, combine it with a trip to the coast - in California, you really can ski in the morning and paddle board in the afternoon Travel is always more fun with the people that you love, and giving your entire family a trip they’ll never forget is something that has infinite rewards. Taking the kids to Disneyland or strolling down Hollywood’s Avenue of Stars, exploring the glamour of Los Angeles are sure to make an impression just as indelible as those handprints in cement. There aren’t too many places where so many “bests” are so easily accessible. Because California contains all these wonders, it tops the lists of destinations to consider for your next dream vacation. To find out more about the “Live Like A Californian” sweepstakes or explore vacation packages tailored around iconic Californians in iconic places around the state, go to www.visitcalifornia.com/sweepstakes.

Feed Kids’ Creativity With Fun, Child-friendly Garden Ideas

P

lanting season has arrived, a prime time to share your love for nature with your entire family and spend quality time together in the garden. Getting kids excited about gardening is simple if they are involved with the planning process which promotes a fertile imagination. Gardening is fun at any age.

With a little help, even toddlers and preschoolers enjoy planting their own little posie or veggie patch. Choose a theme Kids love a theme - from birthday parties to bedroom decor. Capitalize on that by together planning and planting a themed garden. Center the theme on foods they already like, such as pizza or salsa, so the fun and learning experience of gardening combines with eating and enjoying what they’ve grown. What you plant in your pizza garden will depend on your family’s preferences, but tomatoes, purple and yellow peppers, oregano and basil are staples for any pie. For your salsa garden, choose tomatoes, red and green

bell peppers, red onion, cilantro and hot peppers. A butterfly garden is another theme that appeals to children who love flowers, not to mention bugs. Planting sun-loving flowers like bee balm, purple coneflower, black-eyed susan and butterfly weed are sure to attract plenty of butterflies. With luck, the adult butterflies will leave eggs behind, so children will witness the insect’s amazing life cycle firsthand. Give them the tools Brightly colored small spades, tot-sized trowels and, of course, a watering can are beginner gardening staples. Equip children with tools that fit their smaller hands and appeal to their sense of adventure. ScottsMIracle-Gro and Peachtree Playthings have teamed up to offer a line of gardening kits that incorporate Miracle-Gro products that have been helping adults grow successful gardens for decades. The 3-in-1 Gardening Set includes containers, Miracle-GroGo-Mix, seed packets, instructions and a watering can, and helps kids tap into the fun of gardening while doing it on their own. Children can start flowers or vegetables from seed using a Miracle-Gro Kids ModPots, Kids Terrari-

um or single-plant Grow-A-Plant set. Once plants have grown their second set of leaves, replant in the garden and watch them flourish. Dig in Whether your family garden will be in the backyard or in containers on the balcony, porch or patio, involving everyone makes gardening enjoyable. Start by having kids select a garden site. Choose a place that is easily accessible with adequate sunlight - six hours a day - and good drainage. Children like to choose what they want to plant. Often, they pick well-loved vegetables and flowers such as pumpkins, potatoes, daisies or geraniums. Feel free to suggest easy-to-grow new plant ideas like zucchini, purple peppers, dill, chives or tomatoes. During the summer and fall months, as your family comes up with ideas for next year’s garden, be adventurous and explore developed gardens where your children can see what the adult plants look like. Cut out pictures and have kids make a garden collage of ideas. Visit friends and family gardens, tour a botanical or community garden or simply stroll through the local nursery. Bring along a plant identification book and journal to write down the names, colors, scents and if appropriate, taste of

the plant and its fruits you like. Your children will come up with plenty of planning activities for the long winter months as they begin dreaming of spring, planting and tasting once again.

Steps For Catching Up With Old 401(K)s

T

he average American will hold 11 jobs between the ages of 18 and 42, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010). When you start a new job, you probably remember to pack your personal items and update your contact information, but did you consider what to do with your 401(k) held at your previous employer? It’s easy to leave behind. A recent Merrill Edge survey found that nearly half (46 percent) of mass affluent Americans plan to rely solely or heavily on retirement plans offered by their employer for their retirement savings, such as a 401(k) or 403(b). This makes it more important than ever to keep track of your retirement savings. Having accounts in more than one place can make keeping tabs more difficult. Rolling over your balances into one account helps to ensure you can properly track and manage your savings to help you pursue your retirement goals. When it’s simpler to monitor your investments, you can make changes as needed. “One of the biggest challenges facing Americans today is planning for their retirement,” says Dean Athanasia, mass affluent and small business executive at Bank of America. “Many people expect to retire later than they had planned a year ago. Rolling over old 401(k)s is one small step consumers can take to help make managing their retirement sav-

ings easier and their retirement goals more attainable.” Rolling over your old 401(k)s isn’t as complicated as you might think. Merrill Edge, offering a wide array of investment solutions from Merrill Lynch and access to the banking services of Bank of America all in one place, has a three step process to help you keep things simple: 1. Locate your accounts: Collect statements and account numbers for all your 401(k)s. If you’re missing any account information, call your former employers or benefits providers for the information you need. 2. Consider your options: Review all of the rollover options available to you. There may be many options for retirement investing and saving, so consider the length of time you plan to invest and the level of risk that’s comfortable for you. You can use a retirement calculator, like the Retirement Evaluator available on merrilledge. com, to help you see where you stand today and help you determine whether you’re on track to meet your retirement goals.

3. Choose your investments: Finally, decide how you’d like to invest. IRAs typically offer more investing options than 401(k)s to help you reach your retirement goals. Many online tools, such as the Asset Allocator available on merrilledge.com, can help you make investment decisions. Or, consult your financial services provider to help you make investment choices for your unique situation. Dig out of debt before spending on school (ARA) - Raising kids is a lot of things - rewarding, challenging, fulfilling and, of course, expensive. No parent would ever deny that raising kids is worth far more than the cost of doing so. But kids cost money, and a lot of it. As costs of living increase, so too does the cost of having a family. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it will cost more

than $220,000 to raise a child born in the last year, depending on your income level and where you live. That figure doesn’t take college into account, either. Costs vary widely, but you can count on it being a minimum of a few thousand dollars per year, up into the tens of thousands. However, the costs of college have to be weighed against the benefits of having

Capturing graduation memories for life

(ARA) - A child’s graduation is a time for celebration for the whole family. And just about every family wants those moments captured for life. But we’ve all watched grainy, out-of-focus videos that sometimes even miss the graduate’s big moment on stage. Even if you’ve never picked up a camera, with a few simple tips, you can make sure the family memories you capture are worth saving. No matter how state-ofthe-art a camera is, if you don’t know how to use it, you shouldn’t start learning at the big event. “Get familiar with your equipment,” says Ben Gottfried, digital filmmaking

a degree. For example, unemployment rates for college graduates are lower than for those with a high school diploma or even some college. With record numbers of Americans in debt, it might seem difficult to find a way to add college to the family budget. However, if you can tackle your existing debt to free up funds for a university education, you’ll be doing your kids

It will increase your comfort level with the camera and make for better shots.” Now that you know how to use your camera, make sure you’re in a good spot to get the right shots, says Ted Long, academic director for digital filmmaking and video production, visual effects and motion graphics and Web design and interactive media at The Illinois Institute of Art - Schaumburg. “Get to the venue early to set up so you don’t have to use the full zoom on your camera from the back of the auditorium.” And keep it steady. There’s nothing worse than getting a case of motion sickness while watching your family’s special moments. “If you want your

a favor in the long run. The first step to clearing the way for your child to go to college is to put the brakes on your spending. Paying off one credit card while continuing to spend on another will keep you drowning in debt. For many people, the cycle of debt is an unending one. Money that comes in goes back out so fast that relying on credit cards and other lines of credit seems necessary. Beyond simply stopping spending, Equifax suggests taking a methodical approach to paying down debt faster. Organize your debt, including information such as the outstanding balance, the minimum monthly payment and the interest rate so you’ll be able to see which debt you can pay off fastest. For those looking for an automated way to chart their debts and their debt repayment plan, the credit reporting agency recently introduced an online debt re-

video to look good, use a tripod,” says Patrick Roddy, academic director for digital filmmaking and video production and digital photography at The Art Institute of Tucson. If your grad is speaking at the commencement ceremony or if you want to get interviews with family members about the big day, Long advises you make sure to use an external microphone you plug into the camera instead of the one attached to the camera to ensure that your subjects are audible. Now that you’re ready to shoot, it’s time to talk about what you should shoot. First, get an establishing shot, says Roddy. A wide shot of the event that shows the grads walking in, the stage and the audience will give your video context. Gottfried suggests you try to rest on a shot. Don’t excessively zoom or pan and

duction tool, Debt Wise, that automatically prioritizes the debts from your Equifax Credit Report in the optimal order to help you pay them off faster. As you pay off your debts the system updates your Fast Pay Plan and shows you your Debt Freedom Day. In addition, it’s a good idea to add funds to college savings accounts whenever possible to make sure that you have even more to rely on when it’s time to choose a university. As you pay down your debt and create a college nest egg, you’ll be banking on your child’s future. Getting out of debt to reduce stress is one thing; doing it to give your children the opportunity to pursue a valuable college education is quite another. Keeping that goal in mind provides the right motivation, and using an organized, automatic debtprioritization system can provide the right means to tackle the problem.

when you do decide to zoom, make sure it’s a slow one. Jarring shots are hard to look at and even harder to edit later. “Shooting a live event can make you anxious to get shots of everything,” he says. “Keep one eye on the viewfinder and the other on the action going on around you and strategically move the camera when necessary.” “Use the rule of thirds,” says Long. “Think of the picture in the frame consisting of a top third, a center third and a bottom third - the important stuff needs to happen in the middle third.” Get shots of the event from different angles, recommends Roddy. He suggests families use multiple cameras if possible. Because simple video editing software is available for most computers, it can be fairly easy to edit the two videos together.

I’m Want To Send My Daughter To A Harlem Charter School

Q. I’ve heard about a charter school in Harlem that’s doing very well. I’m trying to decide whether to put my daughter in a charter school or to leave her in her local public school. Do you know anything about this school and why it’s successful?

A. First, let me say that I’m not a supporter of charter schools as a whole. In my own district three students have returned to my building alone because of behavior problems. In the local public schools, we have to take all students including special education students, students who have never been to school who come from other countries and don’t speak English, students with an array of mental illnesses and behavior problems, students with physical illnesses that causes them to miss school often and students with socio-economic issues including emotional traumas and homelessness. Charter schools can ask students to leave their programs or not allow them admission in the first place. Charter schools also decrease the amount of financial aid from the

state that would go to the already budget strapped public schools. I think that what successful charter schools have shown is that education is more effective on a smaller scale, with smaller classrooms, monies for effective programs and designs incorporated that say education is important like the use of uniforms. I think you are referring to the Harlem Village Middle School Academy in Harlem. You’d have a hard time finding someone who would think that this is not a special program including me. It was founded in 2001 by former teacher and Time Warner executive Dr. Deborah Kenny and opened in 2003. There are two middle schools and one high school and they are opening more elementary schools in the Fall. In 2008-2009, the New York City Department of Education gave the school a rating of 99.2 and NYC Department of Education grades an “A” in school performance and student progress. The school currently has only 275 students between three buildings. In my district my building alone has 275 students. The school’s success includes the following components: 1. Significant rises in academic performance. Teachers and students become motivated when progress is shown. It gives hope! 2. Teachers are respected and held in high esteem by adminis-

tration and parents. 3. While teachers receive “whatever they ask for,” be it a new camera or a field trip to a museum, in return they are expected to approach their job with a missionary’s zeal, doing nothing less than rewriting the future for kids who come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. 4. There are great expectations! 5. Staff believes instilling a strong moral code is as important as teaching a work ethic. 6. Manners matter! 7. Students are chosen by winning a spot through the city lottery. Then parents have to sign an agreement to be involved! Those of us in the public school sector wish we could make parents become involved in their children’s education. If you are considering a charter school you should visit and see if these components are available. Having fun and learning at the same time

(ARA) - Games come in all shapes and sizes, from basic toys to complex video games. While games serve the purpose of entertaining your children, there’s more going on than kids just having fun. Children explore and learn through playing as they practice making decisions and solving problems. So while kids are having a blast during playtime, games can help foster a variety of academic skills and a love of learning. Through new technology, interactive video games in particular present a great way for kids to learn independently. Video games like Sesame Street’s “Cookie’s Counting Carnival” and “Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure” for Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and PCs offer opportunities for children to practice basic math and reading skills while playing with their favorite characters. “The games are entertaining and intuitive, enabling younger kids in the family to have fun while learning at their own pace,” says Samantha Ryan, senior vice president of development and production for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. When selecting video games for your child, look for the following features: * Math and literacy skill building. Your child may be more likely to work on these skills when they are contained within a fun game. * Games that offer a range of ways to learn. Presenting material in a variety of ways helps kids retain information and helps ensure that they stay engaged.
